The polarity marking should now be correct, it was a mistake that one user mentioned for previous batch. The voltage is expected as I now measure the value at the battery pins. When there is no battery, its 8.4V for basic and 12.6 for boost. There is good and bad doing that, but previously the measuring point would only give me Vcc. For the casing youre right and I forgot about that, sorry. I had the option to put the IR receiver on the bottom side and I did not like it, so I opted for this solution but the casing should have been modified. You can reverse it but if you have a display, the missing honeycomb will be misplaced, and the opening for speakers header are a bit off. That still works though. The difficulty is that the case is made by the generosity of people around here and I dont want to abuse it. Just a heads-up that I've almost shipped all my SqueezeAMPs. I have ~5 Basic left, no Boost (to my surprise). If you are interested, let me know because I'll be away until end of January starting next week. I know I've said that a couple of times, but it is more and more likely the last batch. The AMPs are still with DHL in custom's clearance, although they should have been delivered Thursday... but they are less than 10kms away :) With the responses I have, there are 45~48 over the 60 being already sold, so 10~15 remaining. I'm not worried at all for these, but just to remind that I don't make those builds often (as always, it's not a business: I buy the components, pay for assembly and taxes, buy boxes and bags and that's what you pay for + shipment). Re: [slim] New modified SqueezeAMP batch?
I've sent an email for all who expressed interest for the new batch as it will be here this week. If you have not received anything from me, please send an email to philippe_44 at outlook dot com. Here is the content of the email I've sent. I don't have final price, but should be around 80USD. Code: - name and address - quantity - basic or boost (I only have 10 boost), see website to understand the difference - slim case, large case (for battery) - top case option (bear with me for a bit) => please look at pictures here https://github.com/philippe44/SqueezeAMP 1- normal, 7 honeycomb holes, no room for display 2- for small display (see pictures), missing 2 honeycomb holes to accommodate display 3- as 1- but with holes for an on/off switch 4- as 2- but with holes for an on/off switch note that options with on/off switch should be the normal choice if you selected the large case (with battery) - do you want a small display (limited quantity) - do you want cables to build your own extension and add on/off switch (limited quantity) I can't guarantee that there will be the exact case choice you want. I don't ship batteries. LMS 8.2 on Odroid-C4 - *SqueezeAMP!*, 5xRadio, 5xBoom, 2xDuet, 1xTouch, 1xSB3. The boost is a different PCB with a voltage converter that "boosts" the input voltage to whatever is needed to charge batteries. What can be changed on every PCB (basic and boost), by swapping a few components, is the number of battery cells (2 or 3) it is supposed to work with. By default, basic is 2 cells and boost is 3 cells. [slim] New modified SqueezeAMP batch?
Dear all - Ive made a small modification to SqueezeAMP to add IR w/o modifying size. So never say never, if there are about 30 people , friends, or « distributors », Im ready to redo another batch. It will have the nice casing made by @chill with cable goodies. I dont know how components coat has evolved, but Ill try to maintain it at 65. If nobody wants battery/chargeur, I can reduce that probably below 45 or even 40 (but that has to be nobody). As always, it is at cost. Re: [slim] Choppy playback on certain FLAC tracks to Squeezebox Classic (squeezebox2)
I checked the code to help my fading memory :) and the option to force flac to flac transcoding is at the discretion of plugins. We did that with Michael and it is enabled (and only for Boom/SB3/Duet) with streaming services like Tidal where user has no choice of how the file was encoded. Re: [slim] Testers wanted
slartibartfast wrote: > I wonder why yours refers to OGF Radio and mine OGG Radio. > > Sent from my Pixel 3a using Tapatalk There is a lot of confusion in naming Ogg, Vorbis and friends. Normally, Ogg is a container and Vorbis is a codec. So you can put Vorbis in Ogg or Flac or Opus. Unfortunately, most of the time people name things "ogg" and think it is vorbis inside. So Ogg radio is correct, and obviously you have flac in it, to it's ogf. It is not possible due to the way CC device work. Basically, a "receiver'" application (JS/HTML), signed by Google, must be loaded inside the CC and then is ran from there. This is typically the way 3rd parties secure their content delivery. For example, Netflix would have their own auth (and more) verified and authenticated app loaded inside your CC and that's what communicates with their servers to grab the content. Spotify probably does the same. There is a "default receiver" that you can load and I'm using in CastBridge but if you create a CC emulator, all you'd be able to emulate is that default receiver and that's not much. As soon as you're being asked to load the Spotify application (for example), this would fail. Re: [slim] SqueezeBox Classic (SB3) power supply problem
Otherwise, I'd set a 5V power supply with current limit at 0.25A max. Connect it (it will drop of course). Then (when off) remove the WiFi board. Retry, if Vcc drop is less, try limit Icc a bit less. Remove the CPU board (ground yourself), and do the same. If Vcc still drops at 0.5A+, start removing some capacitors (twist and turn), with the ones closed to the plug (a few 220uF), continue till you find the short. Use a good regulated current-limited supply. When Vcc drop stops, you have found the short. Ask Joe, myself for a repair or eBay for spare parts. Good Luck! I'll ship a box and an amp, all you need to do is put the box together. It's 65USD + ~10USD for shipment and this is a non-profit project. I dont make any gain of any kind. I'm not changing anything and there is no urgency of any kind. I have no intention (and not in charge anyway) or removing support of codecs in LMS. Now, as somebody who had to port many codecs to a new type of hardware (esp32), I can tell it was painful (and still is). So I was wondering, for example: if I had to create a brand new device and I would have to chose only one lossless and one (or two) lossy, which ones would I take? This would mean that LMS would have to be very good at transcoding from anything to one of these codecs, including accepting various inputs like stdin, url, file and doing resampling, sample scaling, seeking and then spitting out the right format with the proper headers (I've done that as well and it's easier said than done when you include all these requirements). So is this a better option to let players deal with the variety of codecs or is this better to reduce their scope and force LMS to do all the proxying/transcoding work. Maybe we should have dedicated helpers for doing that job. That question, as said in 1st post, was also triggered by the request or creating a lossless ./stream.xxx URL because today we only have mp3. Lossless was flac but then I thought what about adding another lossy b/c mp3 is not the best quality, has still IPR potential issues, and is a format of the past. So what should we chose then? Now this post is just to start a conversation about long-term directions, nothing more really. LMS 8.2 on Odroid-C4 - *SqueezeAMP!*, 5xRadio, 5xBoom, 2xDuet, 1xTouch, 1xSB3. [slim] Future of codecs in LMS
I've been working for a while to try to improve codecs support in LMS and recently @philchillbill asked for the possibility to have a /stream.flac instead of /stream.mp3 so that one can stream lossless to any HTTP-capable client. I've made a first version, not yet complete but I was wondering at that occasion about the direction of codecs support in LMS. I'm talking about where to put *focus* not about removing support for others. Focus means where we make thinks extra seamless, or for example we have rules to transforme *everything* into the focused codecs, no matter what is the source. Please, if you want to discuss about CPU usage influence on SQ or that bits are not bits, refrain from answering that post, this would be wasting everybody's time Obviously, we can separate the question in two; lossless and lossy. Let's try with the easy one, lossless. FLAC has a good compression ratio, a free & open implementation, reasonable CPU requirements and can handle 24 bits at "any" sample rate. It can be streamed as each block is independent, it can be put inside an Ogg container to have in-band metadata and is widely supported, so flac is the winner, no debate. Things are bit more complex for lossy, although I have a strong preference there and this is Opus. Opus is very good quality, excellent compression ratio, fixed output sample rate at 48kHz which is perfect. It also has a free and open source implementation, reasonable CPU requirements and (big plus), can be streamed inside an Ogg container as flac. There is one thing I don't like about it is that (AFAIK) it is not streamable independently (in blocks), as mp3/flac are. It needs a header to be added at the beginning of every playback. Still, I think the future of lossy is opus, so that would be my preference. I did not mention that before, but mp3 is a dead dish, IMHO. Now, maybe here we need a second player and I was thinking of aac as a necessary evil. It has the benefit of being streamable in ADTS frames and seems to be adopted a lot (YT content is always a good indicator). Now, I don't like it; it is not free, it consumes a lot of CPU, there is no good open implementation. I know there is faad2, but it it so CPU & stack expensive that I gave up trying to port it on squeezelite-esp32. I also don't like aac for the other encapsulation method which is mp4 I personally dislike a lot mp4 as it is cumbersome, designed by a committee (a camel) where people doing the spec were obviously on the side of the source, not destination. As the result, they had fun with lot of permutations and combinations to do the a lot/the same things (it' s like dash/mpd IMHO) as the source can always decide what it likes where the poor destination, which is usually the most resource limited has to support every option! So, I'm a bit hesitant on lossy, is this opus only or opus + aac, aac being the unpleasant uncle at family dinners. It's all about choices, so thoughts? I'm not sure I fully understand. The SqueezeAMP can take anything from 5V (not recommended) to 20V, ideally 12V. You can run this supply using normal cables, as you said you're not looking for an audiophile-type system (which is not SqueezeAMP anyway). Now, I would rather run the speaker cables to a cabinet, but that's really up to you. If the SqueezeAMP is "hidden", put it in a box like the acrylic one, it's better for heat & safety. [slim] New batch of SqueezeAMP
Just wanted to use a bit the general forum to announce that the new batch of SqueezeAMP is now being shipped to me. You have the complete description in that thread https://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?111328-ANNOUNCE-the-SqueezeAMP-next-generation-squeezeboxen-amplifier-receiver. In a nutshell, SqueezeAMP has the following attributes - Runs a modified version of squeezelite, named squeezelite-esp32 that we have created with @sle118 - Build-in stereo class-D amplifier 2x20W - Analogue and SPDIF optical output - Battery or DC powered (5-20V) with battery charger (2 or 3 cells) - Can be used 'as is' but has many extension connectors if you want to tinker with it (display, rotary, IR, buttons) As a reminder squeezelite-esp32 now exists in 16 bits and 32 bits modes. Back to your initial request, there is no provision for doing that in slimproto (the protocol between LMS and its players). You need to use a transcoder in LMS that will do the job or swapping channel (in other words you decode, swap, then re-encode on the server) or you replace the SB2 with a device (Pi or other) that has Optical and can do the swap locally by tweaking its output. I can do that easily in any squeezelite implementation if the sound driver (optical) does not let you do this, but it will e a custom version. Then just take the value at index 80 > from the array, which is 20992 I'm probably thick again but then I don't think this is the right thing to do then. The 0..100 to 16 bits is not tabulated but interpolated using parameters that are defined by squeezebox2.pm or its descendants (e.g. squeezeplay.pm and boom.pm define it differently). So if I force tabulation, I'll void what other descendants might do. Also, in your example, 5 means only use (25-5)/25=80% of volume for Left and 100% for Right but does not mean 20992 should be sent as gainL. If I really want comply to the segmented volume curve, the balance ratio should be applied to the dB volume (0..100) and then the get_volume and dBToFixed applied individually (i.e. 5 means I apply 80% of the required (0..100) volume to Left and still 100% to Right). Now, I never paid too much attention to that domain of audio, but is a log balance the right thing to do? I though back in the old days of analogue, linear potentiometers were used because we want a finer sensitivity of the balance around the center. Which also reminded me that SqueezeSlave is doing its own volume method implementation... crap. Is this still in use today?
