[slim] Step by step install guide for MusicIP on ReadyNAS x86?
I'm relatively proficient with Windows but have recently ditched my Small Business Server and replaced it with a ReadyNAS PRO 6.(6x2Gb discs runnining in XRaid 2, backing up daily to an old Iomega NAS, and now have MacBook Pros, iPads and iPhones for 3 users ((down from 5). It is so much easier to manage - I have Time Machine running on all Macs to a share on the ReadyNAS, and wireless backups running from the iOS devices to each MAC I'm a complete Linux novice and am struggling to find a step by step guide as to installing headless MusicIP on the ReadyNAS. Is there one?i do mean complete novice - I'll need my hand holding through each step. Re: [slim] Rebuffering is ruining the Squeezebox experience
In my system the problem is limited to the Boom. I can play music for days on the SB3 without it rebuffering connected to the same access point. When the Boom eventually goes to rebuffering failed and locks up. Then the signal strength drops from 98% to 12% on the server information page. The SB3 maintains an average strength of 71%. I set up a test playlist with 1600 tracks in it and it failed at the 243rd track. I uninstalled 7.4, deleted the cache log and prefs files from the folder tree for both the 7.4 and 7.3.x versions of the server (they use different folder paths), and reinstalled, and was able to repeat the same issue. I'll repeat the same experiment with 7.2.1 and see if it is an issue with the Boom or the server. I'm a semi-professional beta tester, since a Motorcycle accident stopped me from working, current projects include CalMAN ISF calibration beta since version 2.1 (software and hardware) iPeng iPhone Squeezecentre controller application since the first version Radiance XD video processor since the first manufacturing batch Content delivery application on iPhone for UK mobile phone service provider (carrier). I'm well versed in isolating and reproducing bugs and there does appear to be an issue. In my case it might be the Boom in which case I'll be on to Logitech support, but I suspect it is a firmware/software issue. I use several other wireless devices, including streaming of video over WiFi none of which have been affected, and as mentioned earlier in this thread my property was built in 2002. Due to UK building regulations the insulation is foil backed and I get NO mobile phone signal inside the building, and my cordless and wireless devices get no signal outside. I am fairly confident that there have been no environmental changes. Just because you don't suffer from the issue doesn't mean it isn't there. I'll do my best to isolate it, and when I do, I'll provide Logitech with as much information as I'm able. I now firmly expect it to be a firmware bug, as my initial thoughts about 7.3.4 fixing it proved wrong. I'll try 7.4 to see if that helps and report back, but leave the testing a little longer this time. Re: [slim] Rebuffering is ruining the Squeezebox experience
The problem appeared to have been with the boom, but it is 8 feet from the WAP. The SB3 is about 20 feet from the same WAP, and suffers no issues. The SBR has no issues either, I had them all running over the weekend with the volume muted. Only the Boom lost contact, which does lend some credence to your theory. I run an iPhone, an SBC, a desktop, laptop and two Squeezeboxes in my house, and all worked well until upgrading to 3.3.3 There's no issue with interference - we live on a 2.5 acre plot and all the insulation is foil backed so RF doesn't enter or leave the building. I do have 3WAPs but they are evenly spread along the available spectrum and well spread through the building. I did upgrade to 3.3.4 last night and I haven't had a recurrence of the problem, so there does appear to be an issue with 3.3.3 and streaming performance. Re: [slim] Rebuffering is ruining the Squeezebox experience
I have three players currently active: SB3 SBR Boom I've increased the server priority to -21. As a test I've been running random song mixes on all 3 players. SBR is connected to one access point - strength 81. SB3 and Boom are connected to another access point signal strengths 71 and 99 respectively. Boom is the only player that I have a problem with. In less than 24 hours it looses connection rebuffering failed and shows less than 20% signal strength in the information pane. I've reinstalled SC and deleted settings and performed a factory reset on the Boom. Something is wrong. [slim] Quick and easy demo setup needed
I'm off to see a pain specialist on Wednesday and he's really interested in looking at the Duet. His clinic is really busy though and I'll literally have 5 minutes to show him a demo. Is there a way of setting up the server software and softsqueeze on my notebook and setup a peer-peer network between the notebook and the controller? I basically want softsqueeze to emulate the receiver and due to time and space constraints I'm not going to be able to take an access point with me. I'll copy a couple of dozen albums off my server onto the notebook's HD - any ideas gratefully received - he'll be looking to setup 4 zones in total probably each with a dedicated controller - I just want to give him 5 minutes of hands on with the controller. [slim] Playing music but keeping it out of the main database
My nephew wants to play his music through the Squeezeboxes. It is typical teenage kid stuff, Music badly organised, lots of it downloaded at 128k (I use FLAC), loads of files in his root folder, album art missing. He wants to play his music through the Squeezebox but I don't want it to come up when the rest of us are using the network and nor does anyone else. Is there a way of him gaining access? I did think of setting up a second server on a different PC and switching between them but the Squeezeboxes are all hidden in a multimedia rack and controlled soley by TCP/IP so I don't think that will fly. Re: [slim] Nokia N800
OK, Now I've had a chance to use our installation in anger one thing which is driving me mad is the fact that if you hit the playlist icon to pull up the current playlist and hit the play icon beside one of the tracks it takes 5-6 seconds for anything to happen. The CPU/memory load/screenshot app shows the CPU is 100% loaded druing this time, and while it happens almost instantly on a windows PC it does show that iexplore uses CPU more heavily during this process. I've checked and there's nothing wrong with my installation - I did a clean install of the shipping 6.5.2 and all of the N800s (except mine) have clean ROMS with no patches. Is there a way of speeding this up? [slim] Hardware problems - any ideas
I've got three Squeezeboxes plugged in to a hidden equipment rack. One of them worked fine for about 24 hours, and then I couldn't contact it via the network. I managed to get it down yesterday and the display was only showing about 10% of the pixels on startup. Using a 5V 2.5A supply increased that to about 30%. Before I send it back to the retailer is there anything I can try to bring it back to life? The only slight problem I have is that I'm just outside the 30 day limit (in the UK) to get an immediate refund and I know the retailer is out of stock as I cleared him out. They sat on my floor for 3 weeks while I waited for a home cinema installer to plug them into my QED MusiQ amps (being a wheelchair user makes it difficult to reach things, and I had no idea how the MusiQs were originally set up). Re: [slim] Nokia N800
Ben, In order to clean things up I re-installed a clean copy of the html and made a copy the Nokia770 folder - called spookily N800! The only alteration I made is to re order the icons on the home page. I also re-flashed to a clean copy of the 2007 image, patched the kernel to support SDHC cards and set up dual boot onto a brand new Adata 8Gb card. Everything seems to be behaving now. I've looked through all of the html in the folder and I can't for the life of me work out how the music-magic plugin is being picked up, and why it appears on the now-playing list of fishbone but not on the Nokia skin. In fact it seems that the ONLY pages of the Nokia skin that don't display the music magic icons are the status and current playlist pages. While with the unit connected to my main HiFi I can use the IR remote, I can't with the 3 Squeezeboxes I'm installing next week for whole house audio as they are going to be hidden in a media rack and controlled soley over WLAN using N800s. Could someone who understands how the html fits together better than me and can install MusicMagic see if the code can be patched? I'm at a loss I'm afraid. Re: [slim] Nokia N800
I don't know what is going on with the memory leak either. It appears to be almost random in the way it appears. One thing for certain is if I take the SD card out the N800 will run for days, if I put it in eventually the browser starts gobbling up memory. If I ever get to track it down further I'll let you know. I don't have two identical SD cards so I can't leave two running side by side. As to MusicIP. If you list albums/artists or tracks you get a MusicIP icon to make a mix. There isn't one on the status page (and I'm not sure that there should be), but I would expect to see a icon on each of the items in the current playlist. While that feature is in Fishbone, it isn't there on the default skin. The only way to get there at the moment is to drill down via artist and or album and then find the track or to search for the track... I did have a quick look at the html but I'm afraid it is beyond me. Re: [slim] Nokia N800
Ben, I'm finiding it very difficult to track it down but one thing will guarantee it won't happen and that is to remove the Sandisk SD Card - why that manifests itself in a browser memory leak I don't know. I'll see what happens with the SDHC cards. Just in case it is a hardware fault I'll open up another one of the N800s I have and try the Sandisk card in it. I've also re installed the Nokia 770 skin from scratch and copied it to a new (N800) folder prior to editing. All I've done so far is re-arrange the home page. Something completely different. I installed MusicMagic and it takes a handful of clicks to base a new MM playlist based on the currently playing track. On the Fishbone skin for example each item in the current playlist has an MM icon. How difficult would it be to add the same to the N770 skin? Great work BTW. I ordered three Squeezeboxes today and tend to implement the 3 additional zones next week. Re: [slim] Nokia N800
There's definitely something going on with the browser - it is consuming huge amounts of memory but only in certain obscure circumstances. I'll try to put together a step by step guide to reproducing the problem in the meantime I've just increased the swap to 128Mb... Are you still updating the skin in the nightlies Ben, or is 6.5.x pretty much fixed with all development work focussed on 7? Great skin btw. I was able to get 4 N800s FOC (Nokia is my brother's ad agency's biggest client), and I've got Squeezeboxes sitting in Node 0 (next to the home cinema stack). They replaced a QED MusiQ and an old Imerge Soundserver. The cabling for high level audio is already in place, but the N800 in conjunction with Slimserver is just so much better. The soundserver was controlled by Philips Prontos and every time I added a new album I had to edit the remote control. I've been asked to write it up for the UK Home Automation website - http://www.automatedhome.co.uk/. The webmaster has a Sonos system, but most of the site members are DIY tinkerers, loads of them run Linux so slimserver is right up their street. Re: [slim] Squeezebox vs Sonos
I'm in the process of setting up an N800 as a dedicated Squeezebox remote. When (If!) I can get it working in kiosk mode to make it easier for other family membersto pickup it will be perfect. It is pretty easy as it is as I've downloaded the SB3 + remote icon from the products homepage and all you have to do is click on the icon to load the webpage and then press one button to make the page fullscreen. I've also done a tiny bit of editing on the server side to turn the drop down player select box into a display field and will eventually set up a dedicated remote for each player by using /index.html?player=name at the end of the squeezebox url. While it does start to get a touch expensive buying one remote for each zone the slimdevices solution is so much more configurable than the Sonus plus I'm putting the players in place of a centrally wired Soundserver and QED MusiQ system. The SB3s will sit hidden out of place in a home cinema rack with the N800s as a discrete touchscreen remote next to the speakers in each zone. I'm also thinking about installing a TCP/IP to IR interface. Instead of just a zone controller it could form the basis of a Smarthome control hub. [slim] Re: Problem With Checked Songs
I'll agree with you that the slimserver software isn't an out of the box solution - bear in mind that it isn't really a web based application but the easiest way to give all users on a network full control is to use a web front end. It has taken me about a month to get it working as I want it (I use the BBC plug in, I'm about to use IR passthrough to control a scaler which won't fit on my equipment rack, and I'm going to edit remote control maps to add in a few commands that will make life easier). The latest excercise was adding a tag to all my albums so they are sorted by artists' family name and not first name. It does need a bit of tweaking, but once you get there it is awesome. My server is reasonably heavily loaded - it is only an XP3200 and has Exchange Server, all the Small Busines Server websites plus a couple of my own, MASSIVE users shared folders (two kids use it and they're always downloading crap, SQL server, IAS - I'm constantly getting warnings about processor utilisation being too high, but it still copes with Slimserver. I've got no experience of ITunes (other than installing it on my nephew's PC, and he's not impressed with ITunes under windows). I'd suggest dumping it altogether and replacing it with EAC but that might be too big a step for you... Have you tried just disabling the iTunes plug-in on the plug-ins page and just setting Slimserver up to scan your music folder? It does sub-folders by default, and if you have multiple folders all you have to do is create shortcusts and place them in the main folder. I know that isn't an ideal long term solution, but it might get you up and running in the short term. Fire off an email to tech support, it will take a few days but you never know they may come up with a really easy solution. I do understand your frustration - I tried using a 6.2.2 nightly and music would just stop playing at random intervals, so I'm back to released software. This community is a friendly one, and you'll find that a lot of the posts aren't bugs per-se but people trying to find a better way of doing something. It is EXTREMELY powerful, I've been watching this market for about 5 years since it was in the realm of the Home Automation hobbyist, but it wasn't until I'd spent a couple of weeks playing with Slimserver on my PC that I decided to buy a Squeezebox. I rip once but encode twice (using EAC and MAREO) - FLAC for use with the Squeezebox (and archiving) and MP3 for use in portable players and the car, so yes it does help. It means going through 300 albums with MP3tag and adding an extra tag but I'm quite anal about keeping things neat. Unless of course you know of a better freeware tagging program. As per the attached I get a BIG increase in SNR 10dB is huge as it's a logarithmic scale. Latest daily build doesn't help, which means: 1. I've got an obscure hardware or software configuration which is allowing a bug to manifest, or 2. I've got a faulty player I suppose the easy way to check is to install the server on another PC. I'll try later. If that is the case I will need some help tracking down what is going on. [slim] Re: What debug boxes to tick
The 3% where nearly empty is a function of the Squeezebox 3 - it empties the buffer when you get to the end of a track. The only other thing I can think of is altering the FLAC encoding scheme I'm using. I've uninstalled the server software re-booted and removed any vestigial files and I'm about to re-install. It worked when I first used it so there must be something different. Re-flashing the firmware has allowed me to correct a problem in another area of the house - a PC with a high gain antenna was struggling to connect at 11Mbits. I use 3 WAP 54s all with High gain antennae to cover a house which is 55m from one end to the other. Net-stumbler shows a decent increase in SNR - and rather than just ramping it up to 84mW the power output is selectable. I've emailed a mate at Cisco to see if the limit is purely regulartory or if there's a danger of causing harm! It appears that your first thoughts were correct - un-installing and re-installing the server software with 6.2.1 (which automatically downgraded the firmware in the player to 28 appears to have solved the problem. I'm a great believer in self help - is there a document somewhere that lists what each of the debug options refers to? I've said it before - while the software is fantastic the documentation is poor. Someone from Slimdevices needs to sit down and provide a full set of end-user documentation. FLAC shouldn't put your router under particular strain - I'm listening to the excellent new David Gilmour album which I FLAC encoded last night (in fact I used EAC Mareo to encode it using FLAC and the highest bitrate CBR and VBR options for comparison purposes) No-one else is streaming anything of any consequence off my server (where all the shared music files reside) and the network connection (100Mbps it goes up into a switch in the loft which feeds 3 access points, we have a big house) is showing less than 1% utilisation, so with WPA and TCP/IP overhead taken into account worst case you are only looking at using 5% of the Access Point's capacity. I use Linksys WAP54s (I use Linksys wireless kit exclusively with a Thomson multimedia router, as I wouldn't touch a WAG54 in the UK where we use PPPoA, even the Cisco guys won't buy them through the staff shop as they are so bad!) It is worth replacing the stock antennae with the High gain replacements (HGA7T from memory). I'm not a Squeezebox expert by any stretch of the imagination, but I've been playing with wireless networks since the days when PCI cards cost 100 quid a piece! I'm up to the high 60s for signal strength - the signal strength meter on my pocket PC shows 75% at the same location. My desktop PC, notebook, PocketPC and printer all connect without problems, and I can stream 1.5Mbit videos from the internet over the wireless connection I have to be careful that I don't overlap as we use 3 access points in total (big house) but I'll try changing the channel. Maybe I've just got a duff unit. In order to determine whether or not it is signal strength that is causing the problem I have two avenues I can persue: 1. Use an external adapter 2. Use a long piece of CAT 5 to wire directly into the socket via a 4 port switch - I've got lots of bits of kit lying around. Is there any particular software build/firmware combo you'd recommend? Oh, and thanks for all your help. I've asked Kevin Pearsall at Slimdevices to look in to see if he can shed some light. There is a third option. (1) is an installable plug-in (just a single file) and I've been using (2) since the start which to my mind errs on the pessimistic side (though not I suppose if you want FLAC without timing errors (jitter). I hope I'm not putting a curse on this but I changed the channel from 6 to 1 and it appears to be OK it has just played an entire FLAC encoded CD for the first time (David Gilmour - On An Island, out this week, if you liked Pink Floyd it's a must buy) Given that is does seem to need a clean signal I think I'm going to have to put another Access Point in the loft as they want three Squeezeboxes next door. Let's hope I continue to make progress. I'm not sure whether wireless is the issue - I get 100% at 2k and well over 95 at 3k - the access point is less than 20 feet from the Squeezebox and is fitted with 7dBi high gain antennae. I already have a PocketPC together with Pocket WinC to check for Wireless dead spots, and the IR on phones and pocketPCs isn't powerful enough for my needs. I already have a BW Pronto that I've custom programmed, I just thought it might be nice to inject some colour. The next thing I'm going to try is flashing the Access Point with hacked firmware (which will probably microwave my balls) - if the problem persists then the wireless network isn't the problem. I've now increased the output power from 22mW to 84mw - combined with the high gain antennae I'm now transmitting well beyond the EC conformity regs, BUT I have a modern building with foil backed insulation so it isn't going to escape. The Squeezebox now reports an 84% signal strength. I'll do some tests tomorrow - if it continues to fail it is something else that is causing the dropouts. I'm happy to create my own map, but as I understand it the Squeezebox won't work with RC5 codes. What about RC6? [slim] Re: Discrete Codes
Yet again I've managed to find the solution. The latest version of ProntoEdit NG has a duration option per button press. By setting that to .2 secs it stops it sending two keypresses instead of one when going through the RF-IR converter. Much easier than editing the raw IR codes as I've done in the past (I was an early adopter - pre ordered my original TS-1000 from Jack Schulz and managed to get the first one to hit UK shores) I'll find the optimum setting (using Newton's method) and then edit the entire file and upload it somewhere. My graphics aren't particularly clever - I use the default set from the RC-5200, adopted from Daniel Tonks's first custom buttons for the original TS-1000 but the IR codes are stored on seperate buttons adapted from Jonathan Schalliol's TS-2000 CCF. One great thing about the NG prontos is that the extra hard buttons generally mean you can cut the number of panels in half. One of these days I'll get around to using the native graphics of the 950! I'm really enjoying playing with the Squeezebox and becoming part of the community. Do a search on my posts and you'll find that I appear to have discovered a number of problems and solutions since last Thursday when I first loaded the software. What a fantastic bit of kit!
