Yes, I know Slim is an "audiophile" grade solution. But there are many situations in a home environment where an "All-In-One" solution will get much more use. More use = more enjoyment (and perhaps more sales). I currently have a "roving" SB3 and it's a pain in the keister. Even with battery powered speakers, I still have two devices (SB3 & speaker unit), dangling wires between them, and the SB wall-wart to deal with. If I didn't like Slim so much I certainly wouldn't bother. PLEASE give us a portable solution for those situations where we can't sit down in front of the entertainment system. web -- web161 web161's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1264 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36603 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Squeezebox Boombox
I bought - a number of months ago - a setup that allowed me to broadcast my music (via SB2) to a pair of speakers that could be either battery powered or plugged in. It is not the best thing in the world, but we can put the speakers anywhere, either with or without batteries (we have never used batteries.) Out by the spa is wonderful, especially at night with just the stars out. I am not happy with the manufacturer because I had a few issues with them, but this is a possibility for others. I would just recommend that they use a different system. -- Mike White Mike White's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=630 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36603 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

If I had a portable squeezebox I would get a lot more enjoyment out of it... poolside, in the kitchen, etc. In fact, that is what I was looking for originally when I bought the "HomePod" (which turned out to be a piece of junk and led me to the purchase of a SB). -- MeSue Sue MeSue's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=985 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36603 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I'd love to have one that was small enough to put into carry-on luggage, etc. Great for hotels, cabins, etc. when travelling. Probably smaller than what a lot of people would think of as a traditional boombox, but still be able to project decent sound. Certainly need to have it easily rechargable. Re: [slim] Squeezebox Boombox
Well, regarding using such a thing in public, I wouldn't, but there are lots of (annoying!) people who do - at the beach, camping, in their front (not back) yards, and once even at the grocery store! Couldn't figure that one out. Would I buy one? Maybe not, but I could really see where they could be useful. Seen all the threads about self-powered speakers lately? Bet you could sell an SB boombox (can we call it the SBBB?) to them...it would save money over the SB3 + powered speaker bundle I'd bet. Do away with the digital and analog outs. If you need such a thing, get a Squeezebox. Keep the headphone output though, but use a muting circuit when plugged in. Use a Tripath-based chip amp for low power consumption, low cost, good sound quality and the coolness factor. Use drivers specially-matched to the amp chip, surely Logitech's computer speaker division can source or manufacture something appropriate. Sound quality isn't key here, but the sound quality should be decent with a Tripath or other digital amp and well-matched drivers. Perhaps add AM/FM radio? Power it by "C" cells, although one must ask how long they'd last given the Wi-Fi power demand - maybe a lithium ion permanent battery might be better, and it'd be a good selling feature. -- Mark Lanctot 'Sean Adams' Response-O-Matic checklist, patent pending!' I might buy one, many of the uber SB fans around here would too. But would jo public buy them and and significant quantities? No way. What's the point in it really? think about it, you might as well have a cheap HDD in it (it's not like you will need a lossless format for such as device). That saves a whole load of hassle. WiFi causes enough grief for us geeks at times, let alone the other 99% of the general public. HDD drives are less trouble for the manufacturer too, there would be much less user support needed. And what about the places it won't work, like the beach or when camping? You might as well take a house brick. If you get your music outside, why not just get a boombox with AUX in and take the DB3 out too? There is no market for this device, even if it sounds like an amazing idea. Re: [slim] Squeezebox Boombox
Indeed, there have been discussions on this before, and using the exact same title as the one I chose. Blast my 3rd grade searching skills! Tyler brings up an important clarification I need to make regarding where I'd want to use a Squeezebox Boombox. The key differentiation is Trusted vs Untrusted networks. In my original post I munged them together, so I'll spend a minute here on that. Using a trusted network is today's model for SS/SB. The SB assumes it's on a trusted network (where all devices on the LAN are known and believed secure) such that it can broadcast for the SlimServer and it's IP and port are easily found. A SB Boombox would, obviously, work quite well in this environment as I would see it drawn from the existing SB firmware. The difference here is untrusted networks. This is the idea of using a Squeezebox on a LAN (wireless or no) where the topology is unknown, other devices are unknown, can not be assumed secure, and where the SlimServer may not be (probably won't be) on the same LAN segment. Thus, SB BB needs to be robust enough to persistently look to join the network and find it's 'home' SlimServer. That's why I'd want FQDN referencing for the SS. Here's a usage scenario that illustrates this concept: My good friend is also a SS/SB user, and he lives a few blocks away. We're over to his house frequently to swim or smoke or shoot the breeze. Using his SB on the patio is an exercise in frustration as we have to drag out a pair of powered speakers, string extension cords around, jack stuff in and get back on the network. I works, but it's a task. Say I have a Squeezebox Boombox but he doesn't. I just bring it over, jump on his wLAN and we're done. He doesn't have to leave out, and protect from the rain, an audio rig anymore. I can find his SS and mine both. Another scenario: We've traveled to my Mom's house over a holiday weekend, where she has broadband but no SS/SB. With my SB BB I join her wLAN and I'm in to my SS with instant tunes (my familiar catalog, but new to her) on her deck with one power cable connection. And a third: I'm tailgating at Starbucks with a group of friends on a warm Saturday evening, and I want to play for them the new Chris Isaak album I just added earlier that day. A whip out my SB BB, join the wLAN (using my T-Mobile account, which I might have from a cellular account, or maybe I bought a day pass), and we're off. This is really the problem with iPod ext. speaker discussion. This approach is *still two boxes acting as one*. You have to do this with iPod b/c the very portable nature of the iPod precludes any speaker output (the dock makes it easy, but still). The SB BB would specifically marry these two into one unit. iPods on speaker decks is a static approach. LANs are everywhere, and the Squeezebox makes music access and playback *live* and exciting! -- forddonald forddonald's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11991 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36603 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I see people, not just kids and teenagers - people in their twenties, early thirties for whom _every_ song they own is on their iPod. So why would any kid want to fart around with a Squeezebox in their bedroom when they can just dial up tunes on their iPods, just like at any other time of day listening when listening through headphones? It's funny that iPod speakers were brought up because it's very much the opposite of the concept of a Squeezebox boombox. iPod speaker systems let you easily take a portable music source and play it through a sound system that's fixed in place. A Squeezebox boombox would let you take a very stationary music source (server & network) and permit you to move the playback system around the house. -- JJZolx Jim JJZolx's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36603 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I would have bought a boombox had one been available at a reasonable rate - in fact ... if the Roku Soundbridge Radio had been available closer to its originally announced delivery date, I would have bought it rather than my 2nd Squeezebox. FYI - I have never seen a set of iPod speakers in use, except in shops. That may well be that the other houses that we visit all have hifi's - but I have never seen one in a kitchen or office. I don't doubt that there are millions of them sold and lots of them in use. Hopefully someone somewhere has done some good market research - given that this is an established market (iPod add-ons) to see if a Squeezebox-style device could sell into that sort of user base. I'm going to nip back over to the other Boombox threads to re-read what people said there as it is a while since I read them. -- Paul Webster Paul Webster http://www.lastfm.com/user/BondJamesBond Paul Webster's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=105 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36603 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Squeezebox Boombox
Where do they use them: Kitchens Bedrooms Offices (at home and work) Living Rooms (yes this is because they, gasp... don't own a stereo) In the garage (I work on my car) On patio/porch/pool/deck On the road (hotel) Basically anywhere they don't have a real stereo setup. I live in SF, and every time I go to a party here I see them. I was just at a BBQ last weekend with an iPod and (coincidentally) Logitech mm28 iPod speakers. If they are used at home in the kids' bedrooms - then would a Squeeebox Boombox be a better solution? If they are used while away on holiday - then ... would there be available internet connection at a reasonable rate? My brother bought the Roku Soundbridge Radio - but has been slightly disappointed. He uses it as a bedside radio but reckons that it needs more presets, more commonality between functionality on the remote and the device (can't always find and operate the remote in the dark) and a few other bits and pieces that I can't remember. -- Paul Webster Paul Webster http://www.lastfm.com/user/BondJamesBond Paul Webster's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=105 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36603 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I'd buy more than 2... gifts! BTW Tyler... the market for dedicated ipod speakers dwarfs the wireless digital music streaming server/player (insert your favorite acronym here) market. Re: [slim] Squeezebox Boombox
Where would you use such a portable device? You can't use it at public locations where there is accessible wi-fi because no one will want to hear your idea of music blasting on the thing. If you think about it, there are very few places that have both accessible wi-fi AND "privacy" to let you play via speakers. Most offices aren't going to allow it, unless at such a low volume level others can't hear it, in which case you may as well use headphones. Sure it would be easy for old folks, but the difficulty in SB stuff isn't in connecting to an existing boom-box or stereo, it's setting up wi-fi and ripping CDs. If the oldsters are savvy enough to set up wi-fi they can handle connecting a normal, small SB to an existing audio system or one purchased specifically for the purpose (with the buyer's choice of amp and speakers). There are a lot of amp/speaker systems sold for pod people. Where do they use them? I've never seen one anywhere except on the web pages and in stores that sell them. I suppose they mostly use them at home where no one will complain about their music. Those people don't need wi-fi and they can't find anywhere to play speakersimagine how many fewer places there are for SB people to play their stuff on speakers. I think the SB is targeted at a more audio quality discriminating market than most boom boxes. Any system linked to music via wi-fi just isn't a portable system. If you want portability you can use a wi-fi enabled pocket PC and run softsqueeze (will it run on a pocket PC?) then plug in your headphones. Re: [slim] Squeezebox Boombox
I agree wholeheartedly. I hope the folks at Slim...er Logitech have put this one on the list. I'd buy two the minute they were announced. In fact, the lack of an "all in one" player is what keeps me from recommending SB to the less technically savvy crowd (read: Parents). web -- web161 web161's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1264 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36603 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Squeezebox Boombox
I wish I could buy a Squeezebox Boombox. It would have the functionality of a SB3, it's familiar UI, but with built-in speakers. I would want to join any available WiFi network I'd happen to be around (including an open, free one automatically). I would also want to program in my home SlimServer as an option, using a FQDN (fully qualified domain name, like "myServer.myISP.net."). My mental vision conjures up a SB3, extended horizontally with enough room for one of those very nice little Harmon Kardon silver dome drivers on each side (the ones like in Macs, or the SoundSticks). Perhaps there's be a third, larger one in back for some bass reinforcement. The remote could be credit card sized, with support for the standard one should I point one at it. The loudness of the speakers would be tied to the volume control on the remote. There could be a carrying pouch, for easy storage and transport, making this a portable SB that could leave the house with me. I suppose it could be battery powered, but there's lots of AC around. I would expect to pay a small premium over the original SB, say +$100. (Sorry if this has been posted before; I searched for something similar and found nothing.) -- forddonald forddonald's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11991 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36603 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
