I've just sold on my Archos 101 as it was a bit too unwieldy, especially
in the 16:9 format. Not sure waht to do for a replacement. This looks
like it may be interesting idea for an Android remote for those that
have no other use for a tablet:

Yeah, the Archos 101 is not really good.
I also have one (and a 2.8 Archos), but I virtually never use it,
because of the crap sreen and the very, very poor battery.

I really like my GalaxyTabs (7 and 10 ). They are a bit more
expensive but indefinitely better. :-)

Re: [slim] Using a 7 tablet and Squeeze Commander

2011-11-07 Thread castalla

I bought a smartq v5 a couple of years ago - runs a linux and Android.
I was really impressed - especially with Radiotime (aka Tunein).

Then, I foolishly and unwaringly left it plugged in on the mains (to
save battery use) ... and after 2 days the battery slowly exploded. A
replacement is a real pain - so I cut out the ballooned battery and
just run it via the mains - but that sort of defeats the purpose of a
semi-mobile device.

So, beware cheap units where you can't change the battery easily. But
then tablets with replaceable batteries aren't cheap either!

2011-11-07 Thread anjenaire

As a lark, I took the HDMI output from my tablet's docking station
(ViewSonic G-Tablet 10 POS) and feed that through this device: 4X1
HDMI 1.3b Certified Switcher w/ Toslink Digital Coaxial Port (Rev.2)
w/ 3D support
(http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=101cp_id=10110cs_id=1011002p_id=5557seq=1format=2),
$US44 and coupled that with SqueezePlayer App
(http://www.appbrain.com/app/squeeze-player/de.bluegaspode.squeezeplayer),
$US5 and took the TOSLink Optical out to my AVR receiver and I was able
to get a decent sound to the receiver. Essentially a very expensive and
large Squeeze Touch. Works in a pinch, nice to have at a party (I am
using SqueezeCommander to control it) although I like having my
dedicated wifi remote.

This was my solution since the USB sound card was not supported. YMMV.

Re: [slim] Using a 7 tablet and Squeeze Commander

2011-11-03 Thread Atlantic

Do these smaller devices - 7 - usually have a USB port? A (normal) USB
port that could take a USB soundcard and so both 'send' stereo sound to
a HiFi, as well as 'receive' analogue for conversion to digital? I've
used Squeezeslave successfully on a netbook with a USB soundcard, but a
tablet would be simpler/smaller.

(Must have been asked before, so apologies if a repeat but, as an
earlier poster suggested, this type of device could really be very,
very, good.)

Someone will probably contradict me in a minute, but I can't see how
this would work unless the device were running Windows/Linux. I don't
think (but may be corrected) that Android devices have device drivers
for things like USB sound cards. You'd have to go for a Windows tablet
I think for that and I don't recall any 7 ones.

That's correct, but I wouldn't count on a Windows tablet having the
drivers either.

The Motorola Xoom (and possibly others) will act as a USB host with the
proper adapter. At the moment, unless you run a customer kernel (aka
root) on the Xoom, the only thing you can use it for is mouse or
keyboard. There are custom kernels that support storage devices
connected via USB. I've seen the question about support for USB sound
cards in Andriod come up in various forums. It may take a while, but
somebody is probably working on it.

I guess tablets work so well because they have a reduced OS, running in
ROM; that's understandable. I hadn't realised that Android was
(potentially) this limited (I knew nothing about it, really, so thanks
for the info). The netbook I used - and I was pretty impressed,
actually - was running Linux (Fedora); I think until tablets can run a
stock linux - albeit with extra drivers/apps added from repositories -
it's perhaps better to wait.

But the idea, of using a 7 tablet with those capabilities as the media
delivery system to a HiFi, is compelling.

Thanks, both, for the input. Regards, Atlantic

[slim] Using a 7 tablet and Squeeze Commander

2011-10-29 Thread bitstreams

I have now downloaded an installed Squeeze Commander for my HTC Desire
and so I finally have album art being displayed in the Spotify App.

This was the last major obstacle to me trying to replace the Squeezebox
Controller, which is nice but just too fiddly to use.

So the next stage is to buy an Android 7 tablet (10 is just too big),
which I can hopefully mount in a charging stand next to the hi-fi and
have the Squeezebox Commander App loaded to control Spotify.

Does anyone out there already have this sort of setup?

1) Will Squeeze Commander work on a 7 tablet?
2) Can I stop the table screen saving?
3) Do I have to keep the Squeeze Controller?

Re: [slim] Using a 7 tablet and Squeeze Commander

2011-10-29 Thread flattermann

1.) It depends a bit on the actual 7 device, but yes, SqueezeCommander
should run fine on it.
I'm using a Galaxy Tab 7 here and I can really recommend it.

2.) You can disable the Screen timeout within SqueezeCommander
(Settings/Keep Screen On).
Furthermore, most Android devices have an option to keep the screen on
while connected to the power supply.
I'm not sure if some kind of burn in is still an issue with modern
screens, but that may be a problem if you keep the screen running 24/7
for several months...

3.) You probably do not really need the Controller anymore. Only if you
have the SB Receiver as well, you may need it for re-running the setup
of the Receiver. (Depending on your Android device, you could replace
it with my SqueezeConfig App.)
And of course, you could use the Controller as a second mobile remote
control.

I have a rooted nook color running cyanogenmod 7.1 that fits the bill
nicely. Ithanks to bluegaspode, it can also be a squeeze device itself,
however the speaker in the nook is amemic at best.

A 7 android tablet at $200 with decent, loud stereo speakers and a
kickstand would be a geeat frontend to LMS as a squeezebox -- even
without DLNA

I think logitech could even SELL one.

Android-based device about the size of radio, successor to touch, 7
touchscreen, stereo speakers built in, support for video streaming from
LMS, alarm clock run as local android app, would be great.
