[slim] Last.fm not appearing in Slimserver

2008-01-03 Thread lizhs

I've been struggling for ages to try and get last.fm playing through my
squeezebox. I understand that if I go through Slimserver Server
settings / Internet Radio, Last.fm should appear as one of the
default listings? It doesn't for me. I have 6 items listed there, Live
Music Archive first, to Slim Picks last. I've downloaded the latest
last.fm and slimscrobbler plugins. help?

Re: [slim] .m4a Playback Issue?

2008-01-03 Thread bpa

Regardless of the mp3 line - I've just realised that there were changes
in Slimserver Squeezecenter since April which means mplayer will no
longer work playing files and you will have to use faad2 instead. I
don't have the changes to convert.conf for faad2 on hand.

To revert I think the link below will download a clean convert.conf
from the source repository.
http://svn.slimdevices.com/*checkout*/trunk/server/convert.conf?rev=14363

Re: [slim] .m4a Playback Issue?

2008-01-03 Thread bpa

I don't have a Windows Slimserver running at the moment so this is what
I expect but not tested.

To use faad2 instead of mplayer.

1. Download a Windows version for faad2 ( probably from here
http://www.rarewares.org/aac-decoders.php ) and copy into same
sub-directory of your Squeezecenter Bin directory as mplayer.exe

2. Change the mov123 lines for mp3 and flc as follows (taken from wiki
AAC entry). You can add the mov wav lines as well. If the executable
in installed in step 1 is called faad2.exe then change the faad to
faad2.

Code:

  # Transcoding for AAC files.
  mov flc * *
  [faad] -w -f 2 $FILE$ | [flac] -cs --totally-silent --compression-level-0
--endian little --sign signed --channels 2 --bps 16 --sample-rate 44100 -

  mov mp3 * *
  [faad] -w -f 2 $FILE$ | [lame] --resample 44100 --silent -q $QUALITY$ -b
$BITRATE$ -x -r - -

  mov wav * *
  [faad] -w -f 2 $FILE$

Thx Phil for the update regarding the running slow problem.

Some things to know regarding the connection string:
- The SlimServer database is default configured to accept only local
connections. Is SlimServer installed on the same machine as the one you
run the script from?
- I haven't tested it yet on SqueezeCenter because it is still in Beta.
Which version do you use?
- The connection string is configured with the default credentials;
UID=Slimserver with no password. Is this still default or did you
change it sometime for your SS installation?
- Try turning of your firewall just for test. The connection is made on
port 9092

Oops :) No, that's not my view at all. I'd be kind of a hypocrite if
it were! Taken to a logical extreme my view would allow an
artist/publisher to specify that restriction if they wanted to but I
think copyright law actually puts some useful restrictions on what can
be required - e.g. by allowing things like format and time shifting.
I'm happy to pay for a license to listen to music, but I do object to
having to pay for 5 licenses :) Likewise I don't think that a ringtone
is a seperate copyrightable work given that it's basically just a 30
second sample of the original recording, but AFAIK that one's yet to be
tested.

The copy I was referring to in your quote would be a person-to-person
copy via file sharing, borrow rip, tape-to-tape, or whatever the
technology du jour is.

There's a short bit at Ars Technica regarding Radiohead's In Rainbows
pay what you like experiment and the band have said they made more in
digital distrubution money from In Rainbows than all of their other

Apparently many contracts in the days before downloading tracks had no
provision for digital royalties and the artists get nothing on them.
That's absurd!

The bit on Ars has a couple of good links to a couple of other
articles, one being an interview by David Byrne.

Interesting - I had also assumed it was just an SC7 issue.

Two things to mention: I'm currently running SC7 on a virtual machine,

I'll play around a bit more to see if either of these two have

Two things to mention: I'm currently running SC7 on a virtual machine,

I'll play around a bit more to see if either of these two have
something to do with it. Have been planning a take the plunge
migration to SC7 for my main set up for a while now - this may be the

Re: [slim] Access Slimserver from work

2008-01-03 Thread davep

Well, if you have iTunes on your PC then it is possible to stream music
from home, it just can't be done securely. You can establish a dyndns
account on the Mac at home so that you have an internet ip address for
your home machine. Then set up your router so that ports 3483 and 9000
are forwarded to your Mac's local LAN address.

Then on your work machine, in the iTunes menu, go to Advanced | Open
Stream and enter the following:
http://your_dyndns_address:9000/stream.mp3

Then in your web browser enter the address:
http://your_dyndns_address:9000

This should load SqueezeCenter and show your library as at home. In
the drop down list of players in the top right side you will see a
referecne to the iTunes player (although it won't be called iTunes).
Select this and then set it playing some music from your library and it
should come out via iTunes.

I'm not at my machine now and in any case use ssh so the details are
slightly different so I can't absolutely guarantee that the above will
work for you.

Please be aware however that by doing this you will be opening up your
machine and particularly your SqueezeCenter to all and sundry. If I
got hold of your dyndns address or name then I could simply start your
home squeezebox(s) playing anything from your library at any time, at
maximum volume.

Re: [slim] Is it time to retire my Squeezebox?

2008-01-03 Thread davep

I have a SB1 also, as well as a couple of SB2's and a TP. Even though
the SB1 is the only one of the 4 boxes which is actually wired to the
router - the others are all wireless - it is the only one that has
dropouts. I put this down to a combination of running an all-flac
library and the small size of the buffer in the SB1. My cure has been
to implement bitrate limiting for this player to 192 kbps and that
seems to have done the trick.

The newer boxes have an upsized buffer and, as I said, I can stream
full strength flac to them all with no dropouts, so a new SB3 would no
doubt solve your problem - assuming it is not some other network issue
such as a neighbour's new wifi router on the same channel, or a
microwave oven or cordless phone somewhere nearby causing interference.
You could try the bitrate limiting trick on your SB1 to see if that
fixes it.

Some more data points might be needed:

- try wiring your player - if the dropouts continue, then it's not a WLAN
problem. If they go away, it is.

- when you encounter drop outs, is there some other background activity going
on on your server?

- what's the machine's general memory and CPU load?

- are you using any 3rd party plugins?

You probably don't even need anything special on your work machine. Once
you establish your home IP address, just connect to it through the web

Security wise, in order to prevent the world from mesing with your

Aw shucks, and just when I was feeling the warm glow of success.

If it helps, my set up is as follows:

Create System DSN in ODBC Source Adminstrator as follows:

DAta Source Name - Squeezecenter
User - squeezecenter
Port - 9092
Test and OK

Change script using Edit Pad Pro as follows:

'MySQL connect constants
Const ConnectString = DRIVER={MySQL ODBC 3.51
Driver};Server=127.0.0.1;Port=9092;Database=slimserver;UID=*squeezecenter*;Password=;Option=3

Save and run script. Seems to have done the job for me. How did you
edit the script? Notepad not the best thing to use in my experience as
it doesn't always preserve the line endings - just in case this is
relevant.

Siduhe - thanks...

I removed the ODBC driver and reinstalled.
Then I followed your instructions. The ODBC driver tested out ok in

is generally something to do with the way that the ODBC drivers are
installed...so the problem may be unique to my PC.

I used Wordpad to edit the script.

[slim] AMG Tapestry

2008-01-03 Thread studley

I'd like to suggest that the Squeeze team explore licensing AMG Tapestry
and incorporating it into SqueezeCenter.

This would enable us to develop interesting playlists based on mood,
genre, and themes. I believe it works using fingerprinting and would
also enable users to clean up their tag data and add additional
information.

It seems to me that more advanced (and interesting) playlist management
would be a natural next step in the evolution of a fabulous product.

Cheers,
David

Re: [slim] Scanner.exe Keeps Stopping?

2008-01-03 Thread Itlan

So I enabled the artwork debuging in the gUI and ran a scan, looks like
some usefull output maybe!

I cant tell if its bombing out on Danity Kane (God why did it have to
bomb on that album!) or trying to access the next one.. any ideas? The
art in the DK folder and the next folder appears normal. The DK art is
360x360,43.6KB and the next folder in line is Darren Hayes with a
300x300,17.8KB image.

I noticed in the view scan details the last album it shows is the 13
Tales From Urban Bohemia 500x500,68.8KB image. WHat I started doing was
replacing the art in the folder it stopped on there and that seemed to
get it to the next error. But according to this log it looks like it
parsed it fine, so maybe it was a delayed thing.

I just wish I could figure out whats causing the errors to trouble
shoot all bad files and not one at a time thorugh rescans. Got 2,000

Sure, there are known problems with transcoded formats playing on SB1s,
which you've already been discussing. The problems manifest as reduced
throughput from the server. Bandwidth issues also lead to reduced
throughput. Prior to christmas, the problems weren't bad enough to break
through the barrier of the SB1's buffer, but as the bandwidth
deteriorated, things got worse.

It's not a problem - more an irritation. Since getting a new PC with

On opening the Slimserver browser interface I also find more occasions

For 7.0, the server and network health page should be available under

you will need to browse to server url/perfmon.log. This should show
you if it is the server performance which is causing the drop outs.

For 7.0, the server and network health page should be available under

you will need to browse to server url/perfmon.log. This should show
you if it is the server performance which is causing the drop outs.

Here are the results - hope I have done this ok

Buffer Fullness
This graph shows the fill of the player's buffer. Higher buffer
fullness is better. Note the buffer is only filled while the player is
playing tracks.
Squeezebox1 uses a small buffer and it is expected to stay full while
playing. If this value drops to 0 it will result in audio dropouts.
This is likely to be due to network problems.

Squeezebox2/3 uses a large buffer. This drains to 0 at the end of each
track and then refills for the next track. You should only be concerned
if the buffer fill is not high for the majority of the time a track is
playing.

Playing remote streams can lead to low buffer fill as the player needs
to wait for data from the remote server. This is not a cause for
concern.

Re: [slim] How do I get podcasts out of my squeezebox library?

2008-01-03 Thread radish

If the podcasts are tagged, you can use the custom browse plugin to
create menus which exclude that genre.

Also, iTunes does let you keep your music outside of the iTunes folder,
so you could move all the music out and just leave the podcasts in
there. That will only work if you just point slimserver at the
directory and let it scan. If you use iTunes integration it will find
the podcasts wherever they are :)

Re: [slim] Announcement: a new PSP skin

2008-01-03 Thread Peacey

I just tried to download the PSP zip file, but Windows says it's in
invalid folder (it appears to be empty). Tried on two PCs. One running
XP, the other Vista.
Anyone point me to a valid copy, or suggest what might be going wrong
with my download?
Really looking forward to seeing this skin on my PSP, now that I've
worked out how to set the PSP up to connect to SS.

PS. I spent about two hours trying to type in my 63 character WPA key
into the PSP and kept getting an error on the PSP telling me that the
key contained invalid characters. Anybody know what the limitations are
on the PSP Key format? Mine contained all the special characters
*[]\+! as well as 0-9 and A-Z. Had to change to a simpler WPA key,
but I don't want to keep it so simple for fear of it being unsecure.
Also because I don't want to have to re-type the new simple key into
all my other wireless devices.

It's not a problem - more an irritation. Since getting a new PC with
Vista Home Premium installed, at boot-up Slim Server starts OK but I
always get a pop-up error message from Windows:

slim.exe stopped working and was closed

On opening the Slimserver browser interface I also find more occasions
when the page just hangs and either I can't follow links or the
right-hand player pane does not appear (or both). This can be rectified
 by re-booting.

All of these issues are fixed in the latest SqueezeCenter (formally
SlimServer) beta. That said it's still in beta testing so you may or
may not want to wait until it goes release candidate.

Re: [slim] End of the Squeezebox?

2008-01-03 Thread tyler_durden

What is different about what a musician does that makes it worth more
money than what a 3rd grade teacher does? Or a plumber? Or what I
do?

Musicians at at the mercy of supply and demand like any other
commodity. For a few years record companies were able to control the
supply and the price/pay of popular artists went up. Technology has
taken that control away and the price has fallen to nearly zero,
especially for popular artists, simply because they are popular and
their stuff is all over file sharing networks.

On the other hand, unknown musicians can now sell some of their stuff
because they don't need a record company to distribute it, and their
relative obscurity makes obtaining their work via file sharing harder
to do.

So maybe the model now is for unknown artists to launch their careers
by selling some CDs and doing live performances, and when they become
popular, give away their music to promote concert ticket sales. And
tee shirts. And coffee mugs. And ring tones. And their acting
careers. And their fashion businesses.

Re: [slim] Organizing Music --Could use some help and advice

2008-01-03 Thread lreinstein

it does not seem to help.

when i select genre/classical, the list is populated by the artists
plus album artists, another tag from itunes. i suppose i could
delete all of those album tags, and then put the names of the
conductors, pianists, etc in the comments fields in itunes. but this
is too bad.

 - what's the machine's general memory and CPU load?

I've run it both wired wireless - no change

No other activity going on. I've had a rsync process run at 90% cpu
and absolutely no dropouts, then one day I'll have dropouts galore and
the cpu isn't even breathing heavy...

Memory CPU load are well within normal - it's a dedicated server w/
nothing else going on.

I've unloaded all plugins except for rescan library and a couple of
default ones.

Re: [slim] Is it time to retire my Squeezebox?

2008-01-03 Thread Mitch Harding
For what it's worth, I used to have dropouts on my SB1 (wired with
FLAC), but I've never had them on my SB3 (wireless, also with FLAC).
Now I don't have them on either. I made several changes to eliminate
the dropouts, though. My SB1 was plugged into a gigabit switch when
it was experiencing the dropouts. Now it's plugged into a 10/100
switch. I also moved my server to more powerful hardware and switched
from Windows to Linux. Finally, and more recently, I moved to SC 7.0,
which I've found to be a big improvement over 6.5.x.

Since you still see your problem even with a wired network, then
bitrate limiting for the purpose of reducing network bandwidth
shouldn't matter, since the wired connection should have solved that.
However, I suppose it's possible that the higher quality mp3 files
were overrunning the SB1's buffer.

It may be worthwhile to try and narrow down exactly why you are seeing
the dropouts before getting the SB3. But that having been said, I
would be very surprised if the SB3 experienced dropouts. The downside
to just going to the SB3 is that you may still have some problem that
your SB3 is just masking.

the SB1 is the only one of the 4 boxes which is actually wired to the

You could try the bitrate limiting trick on your SB1 to see if that
  fixes it.

Thanks for the input, I appreciate it. I'll try the bitrate limiting,
all of my files are 320 vbr mp3's so that's a good thought. I forget
sometimes about the player settings you can tweak. It's good to know
the sb3 has a bigger buffer.

Re: [slim] Announce: Album Catalog Creator for SlimServer

2008-01-03 Thread schatzy

Thanks for this great utility. I love it.

I have found one thing though that may need to be looked into. I am
describing it here for others to try and see if they come up with the
same issue.

Background:

1) two computer running windows XP SP2 latest updates

2) computer one runs SS 6.5 latest release, computer two runs SC7
Latest nightly

3) same issue shows up on both systems using same set of mp3 files

4) file layout is MP3\letter\artist\album (e:\mp3\B\Boston\Don't Look
Back)

Test procedure:

1. run SS 6.5 and SC7 clear and rescan on same data files set. (Both
computers are linked to same NAS).

2. run Album Catalog Creator

3. select only one artist by using start folder option. (E:\A\Alice in
Chains). I know that there are 5 albums with a total of 57 tracks in
this folder.

4. Press start after 15 seconds two windows pop open as follows:

First window: (dialog box)
Album Catalog Creator is finished - states the following:
Total number of tracks processed: 57
total number of albums processed: 3

Second window: (IE Window)
Display shows 4 albums with 42 tracks

5. last album in alphabetical order is not shown. I have tried this on
many different artists folders and on both computers. I even went as
far as changing the name of one of the albums (in the mp3 tags) to
force it to show up before some of the others alphabetically and it is
always the last album alphabetically that does not show up.

Has any one else seen this issue.

P.S. it also happened when i did a full Album Catalog Creation on my
full MP3 set of files (58281 tracks by 3481 artists and 7957 albums).

By the way when i printed the list to a PDF file it come up with 889
pages when displaying album art and track titles and 140 pages when
done as a short list without covers or track titles.

Other that this one issue i have not found any other problems with the
operation of this utility. It works great.

Thanks for your great work and time to do this

Schatzy

[slim] SB3 Cutting Out While Playing Apple Lossless Files

2008-01-03 Thread John151

All of a sudden, my SB3 cuts out while playing m4a files. Everything
was fine a few days ago.

Here is my set up:

Player: SB3, ethernet connection.
Server: Mac Mini, Intel Duo Core, 2 Ghz, 2 Gig Ram, connected via WiFi
(connection appears to be very fast, no issues with intenet). CPU
monitors show little to no load on the system. No significant software
running on the server.

Problem started on Slim Server 6.5.4, so I upgraded to Squeeze Center,
and upgraded the player. No change.

I have rebooted several times, but to no avail.

MP3 files play fine, and FLAC files play fine from a Windows server
(ethernet connection).

To my knowledge, nothing has changed on the Mac Mini since betwen the
SB3 working fine, and the SB3 not playing m4a files.

Any ideas?

[slim] Slimserver access from work using SSH

2008-01-03 Thread gammelgam

Cheers,

I am trying to access my slimserver from work (using Softsqueeze).

1) I run XP on both my server (at home) and my workstation (at work).
(However, all my testing so far has been from another local PC (at
home) instead of the work PC by using my external IP address)
2) I have installed and tried both FreeSSHd (http://www.freesshd.com/)
and OpenSSH on my XP server (at home) to get SSH access. Only running
one at a time of course...
3) I configured my router to port forward port 22 (SSH port) to my XP
servers local IP (192.168.0.3).
4) I opened port 22 in the XP server firewall (at home).
5) I started a putty SSH session from another machine (at home) to test
if it was working. In the Putty session I entered my external IP
(checked using Whats my IP as well as in the router): 83.bla.bla.bla.
6) All seems to work since a terminal prompt appears asking for a login
and password. Some info about cryptation keys was swiftly
accepted...without knowing what they do...
7) I login with my XP admin account and password and it was accepted.
Looking goodso far...
8) I started Softsqueeze (on another home machine) and tried to use the
included SSH client (configred to connect to 83.bla.bla.bla) with some
success. After several minutes I get a connection to Slimserver. It
seems to work, I thought... Now lets play some music...
9) The performance is extremely slow. So slow that I am not getting any
music at all (!) and navigating the menus from the Softsqueeze remote is
extremely sluggish (VERY!). After a while the connection seemed to drop
off completely. I shut down and tried option 2: Putty tunnels
10) Set up SSH tunnels using Putty. In a new Putty session I configured
a local port 9000 to be forwarded to a remote port of 192.168.0.3:9000
(the LOCAL IP on my XP server). Did the same for the 3483 port.
11) Using the same session as above logged in to 83.bla.bla.bla
(external IP).
12) Got a login/password prompt and logged in. Seems to work once
again...
13) Started Softsqueeze and unchecked the SSH box and instead used a
server of localhost:9000.
14) Got a connection from softsqueeze to Slimserver that worked (yay!)
but was as slow as before (doh!): a few bits/s. Unusable.
15) My ISP up speed is about 1Mbit which should be plenty when
Slimserver is set up to use bandwitdh limits using Lame transcode.
16 ) When I skip the SSH part and make a local connection directly to
192.168.0.3 from another home PC all works fine, including the bandwith
limit and Lame transcode.
17) I have not yet tried to do this from work since I gathered that it
must first work at home (but going from my local home PC to the
Slimserver PC by Putty SSH and the router external IP.

I have either done something wrong or there are some ISP limitations
going on?

Any comments?

Thanks for your time.

/Emanuel
