This statement does really show that you do not know anything about the
inside of an NAS. Just have a look how you connect to NAS devices: Via
CIFS, NFS, FTP, iSCSI or whatever protocol your NAS supports. As the
disk itself does not provide these protocols, your NAS has to do ist.
And guess what, it does this by running services like Samba, NFS
Server, FTP Server, iSCSI target via services (in your words
application) that are running on a mini Linux.

I think the ideas is that a NAS is focused and optimized for storage
services. It can certainly do other things, but its focus will always
be to be good at storage.
The result is that things like running an MySQL database on a NAS will
never be a situation which the NAS has been designed for.

IMHO a Mini-ITX setup will result in a low power device that is a lot
more suitable to run SqueezeCenter than most NAS boxes. It will
probably even be a lot cheaper than buying a more expensive NAS which
has enough processor power and memory to run SqueezeCenter at
acceptable speed.

But what would be great is a virtual machine appliance. So those who
run a server at home could easily be able to just deploy an additional
VM. Or maybe die distribution is done by an appliance CD, so that you
can install the VM by your own. Latter one would eleminate the need to
support several different virtualization technologies at logitech.

Instant SqueezeCenter should be pretty simple to install and run in a
virtual machine.

Re: [slim] Squeezecenter: Artwork Folder (artwork not showing)

That worked! (typing in NEWDIR=ls -d
../../Music/Flac/$ARTIST/$ALBUM*). All folders are listed. I think I
typed in 'NEWDIR=ls -d ../../Music/Flac/$ARTIST/$ALBUM*' the first
time (with single quotes).
Strange thing is, however, that if I try to repeat it the next morning,
I receive the error -bash: -d: command not found. I assume this has
something to do with the /bin/bash path? See however '[image:

[slim] Squeezecenter: internet bandwidth needed

2008-09-01 Thread fredz

I am thinking of putting up a Squeezecenter server (for my own use) at a
remote location. Can I use it with a Squeezebox by connecting to it over
the internet? If so, what upstream bandwidth would be required (just 1
client simultaneously), would all features be available, and what ports
would I need to forward? Will this slow down operation? Thanks

[slim] AlienBBC - BBC Radio. Why not core component of SlimCenter?

2008-09-01 Thread ModelCitizen

I've just been musing on just how core AlienBBC is to my enjoyment of
the SlimDevices products. It has struck me that if I could not play BBC
Radio on my SlimDevices then I'd probably only have bought the
Transporter and would not have purchased my other three players. I'd
certainly never have considered a bedside Boom or a sound system in my
kitchen that did not include BBC radio.

I'm sure I cannot be the only one who thinks like this either.

It worries me that AlienBBC is a plugin and maintained by a vounteer or
two. What happens if they give up... or do not adapt the plugin for the
New Streaming due in 7.3? I'd have three bricks on my hands!

As I remember, the reason that BBC radio is not core code is due to
licencing issues regarding the might not be quite legal mplayer,
which decodes the Real Audio streams. This has to be used due to the
BBCs strange decision to use Real Audio streams instead of the much
more sensible MP3 (yes, the decision looked bizarre at the time it was
taken too... it's not just a hindsight thing!).

Now that the BBC is changing away from Real Audio is there any chance
that BBC radio will become core code?

A secondary question is why oh why don't the BBC provide a sensible
channel indexing system for players like the SlimDevices, Roku, Sonos
etc..? I am constantly annoyed with the way that the AlienBBC menus
make no sense and then keep breaking (as they have now with the new
iPlayer menus) every time the BBC makes a (far too frequent) change.
It'd appear be a very simple thing for the BBC to provide a logically
organised XML feed too (and I pay my taxes etc etc etc)

I am in no way detracting from the guys who designed and maintain the
AlienBBC plugin. They are all pretty god-like in my eyes.

Yes, but that is not the same as giving out a hostname.
If, for instance, we are talking about Windows Server 2003 DHCP and

IP data, but the device needs to have a hostname then ;-)

You're wrong. My router 'suggests' hostnames to the clients.

Many (most?) clients ignore this field and many (most?) DHCP servers

Re: [slim] Squeezecenter: Artwork Folder (artwork not showing)

2008-09-01 Thread wilgartw

it is very impotant where the quotes are, and what type of quotes are
used.

NEWDIR=`ls -d ../../Music/Flac/$ARTIST/$ALBUM*`

note the single quotes. they are backwards, it is the one above the
tab key. this single quote says execute the command, and use the
output

the double quotes tell the ls command that the filename is all one
file/dir ie allow spaces once $ARTIST has been inetrpreted.

the ls -d says print the name of the directory. and the * says
complete the name of the album (ie add in the year).

hope you get this working, you are very close.

unfortunately i cannot access this forum from work. but i will log on

2008-09-01 Thread bpa

Now that the BBC is changing away from Real Audio is there any chance
that BBC radio will become core code?

That is for Logitech but I think legal issues - however playing
RealAudio streams through an SB was not strictly legal when mplayer
used RealNetworks libraries (each user may have violated a RealNetworks
EULA).

Similarly BBC is moving to secure MP3 and AAC+ - both of which have
licensing issues (e.g. may require support in the SB)

In terms of users about 330 user have downloaded the recent iPlayer
Addon and 30 user the 6.5 addon. I don't know if a 360 users is large
enough user base for Logitech to adopt the BBC support.

A secondary question is why oh why don't the BBC provide a sensible
channel indexing system for players like the SlimDevices, Roku, Sonos
 etc..?

I don't understand - the menu are more or less as the BBC have laid
them out. So this is a BBC issue.

I am constantly annoyed with the way that the AlienBBC menus make no
sense and then keep breaking (as they have now with the new iPlayer
menus) every time the BBC makes a (far too frequent) change. It'd
appear be a very simple thing for the BBC to provide a logically
organised XML feed too (and I pay my taxes etc etc etc)

The BBC do provide an XML interface and an AlienBBC Addon has been
posted in the same iPlayer thread which uses the XML interface.
Unfortately the XML interface is not as complete as the screen
scraper. The current interim XML interface was developed quickly (I
think mainly for Receiva) - a more complete XML interface is promised.
Currently the XML addon is making use of information posted on the
internet (as BBC have not published the spec on their website) and so
is not an official user of the interface.

AlienBBC will move to use the full XML interface - in the mean time
both screeen scraper and XML are available.

[slim] Duplicate artwork

2008-09-01 Thread swedmoose

I have a Duet and I updated SqueezeCenter from 7.1 to 7.2 a couple of
days ago and have noticed a small problem.

On the Controller, when selecting Display albums, some of the albums
are duplicated. All albums that are part of a playlist is duplicated.

Is there a setting somewhere that controls this, or is it a bug?

Cheers for the reply. I'll look up secure MP3 when I have a moment.

It looks like AlienBBC is not very popular at all then. I'd assumed
many, many more people used it than those download figures indicate.
With the low user base and ongoing licensing issues I guess it stands
no chance at all of ever becoming integrated with SlimCenter and being
maintained as core code.

Re: [slim] SqueezeCenter gapless syncing seems much worse than SlimServer

2008-09-01 Thread awy

I have no idea where a 5s gap could come from, unless some preferences
have been explicitly set to achieve that.

In terms of what you can fiddle with in 7.2, the two most likely
candidates are the syncBufferThreshold (per player) and syncStartDelay
(server wide, under Networking in the WebUI, default 100ms). This
latter is new and, in the case that perfect synchronized track start is
not required, could be reduced to 1 (not 0, as 0 = default = 100ms).
This would add to the chance of resync jump just after track start in
which case, if you were happy with the old behaviour where sync can
drift during a track, you could turn off maintainSync (per player).

There is no UI to change syncBufferThreshold, but the default is only
4kB and it has not changed since SC6. If you want to change it, then
you need to use the CLI.

Re: [slim] Duplicate artwork

2008-09-01 Thread Siduhe

At a guess, you have created the playlists outside of Squeezecenter and
they are showing a different path from the Music Library set in
Squeezecenter.

Open up one of the playlists using a text editor like Notepad or
Editpad. What is the path of the music file? Is it the same as your
Music Library?

If the paths are different (for example, your Music Library is
M:/Music, but the playlist path is //ext/Music/) then Squeezecenter
will think that these are two different files and list them twice in
your Library, hence the duplicates.

There's an easy fix, open up the playlist and do a find and replace to
change the path to the same path as the Music Library. Then do a full
clear and rescan of your music.

Does that sound like your issue?

Re: [slim] AlienBBC - BBC Radio. Why not core component of SlimCenter?

2008-09-01 Thread bpa

The user number has a couple of caveats

1. many non-UK users use AlienBBC to play live streams and so the
Addon download does not reflect this group of users.

2. There are a number of Roku and non-Slimdevice hardware users who
also use AlienBBC. For example, from PMs etc I think there at least 10
Roku users.

BBC are using Flash to deliver audio as it seems to be more platform
independent. The MP3 audio is carried within a Flash proprietary
protocol and BBC have termed this secureMP3. It is not clear whether
the AACplus will also be sent over Flash or not. If AACplus is sent
over Flash then AlienBBC will not be able to use them without a player.
For AlienBBC to play these streams would require an equivalent of
mplayer except handling flash audio.

Next version of AlienBBC has a better version of XML Addon (all
Triode's work).

AlienBBC has not been consistently one or two individuals but many
people over time.

For example, Triode is always looking ahead with knowledg of where SC
is heading, making architectural changes and also gets some of the
necessary support added to SqueezeCenter. Neil Slightholm did a great
job with the Windows installer which made AlienBBC much more accessible
as previously it was a very very complicated install. Neil also
provides the web page and arranges releases.

I've done bell and whistles (e.g. enabling ffw/rew) and firefighting
(i.e. iPlayer) so my profile is a bit more public.

There has also been good support from SqueezeCenter team (e.g. andyg,
awy) as many of the SqueezeCenter changes are there only to support
AlienBBC.

This is all very good to know.. and in the main quite reassuring. Thanks
bpa. I guess Mr Triode is a Logitech employee then?

I'm still pretty staggered that the AlienBBC user base is not measured
in the medium to high thousands (at least).

I'm perplexed as to why the BBC don't provide simple no-nonsense
accessible-to-all mp3 streaming and why they have to get wrapped up in
what appear to me to be esoteric, proprietry and probably expensive
formats. As usual there is probably some key knowledge I'm lacking
however.

Re: [slim] AlienBBC - BBC Radio. Why not core component of SlimCenter?

2008-09-01 Thread Siduhe

I've been told by someone who works at the BBC (in new media) that
it's a consquences of them being early adopters. When they started up
their streaming program, Real was the only format that was widely
accessible on all kinds of platforms (Windows, Mac, Linux etc) and Real
agreed to let the BBC use their format free of charge without any
licensing fees. This ticked all the boxes in the charter about
open/accessible/value for money with the licence fee etc.

Over time it became apparent that other formats were going to need to
be supported (such as WMA etc), but each format addition required
approval against the requirements of the charter, and this got
increasingly difficult because of the restrictions on the licence fee
increases and because of the increasing licencing demands that were
being made by the format providers. So you end up with the current
hotchpotch of streams and formats.

I guess this was a big part of the decision to get iPlayer up and
running and to move stuff across to that single platform.

Re: [slim] AlienBBC - BBC Radio. Why not core component of SlimCenter?

2008-09-01 Thread bpa

So how do all those cheap ass WiFi internet radio's the pop up
everywhere (and Sonos) now the do all the BBC stuff do it then?

Most of the Wifi radio use the Reciva chipset which has license
RealAudio decoder. Reciva runs a web site which did the screen
scraping just like AlienBBC and now uses the XML format. Visit receiva
forum and you will see the same sort of comment such as missing
programs, gaps etc.

Does SONOS does a Listen Again Facility. Most likely SONOS is also
using mplayer/RealPlayer or similar.

Re: [slim] Duplicate artwork

2008-09-01 Thread swedmoose

Thank you. That might be the problem. I created the playlists with the
SqueezeBox Controller when running SC 7.1. I had a few problems when
upgrading to 7.2 and moved all the music and playlists. When SC 7.2
worked, I moved the music and playlists back. It's possible something
changed at that point.

I will look at the playlists tonight and see if they are incorrect.

I have to say that my beloved BBC have really annoyed me in this

They originally made the wrong decision with streaming and now look
like they've made it again. And they should have sorted out a suitable

Normally the BBC get things right but I think they've been quite

[slim] Software Update on SB3 Doesn't Work!

2008-09-01 Thread Lefty

Hi guys,

I've just recently upgraded to the v7.2 SqueezeCenter on my MacBook.
The install seemed to go smoothly enough but when I hold down the
'Brightness' button on the remote to perform the required software
update on the SB3 itself, nothing happens. The 'Software Update Press
and Hold BRIGHTNESS to begin' screen stays up and the little spinning
wheel in the corner just freezes.

Any ideas? At the moment, my SB3 doesn't work :-(

Re: [slim] AlienBBC - BBC Radio. Why not core component of SlimCenter?

2008-09-01 Thread bpa

I wonder why MP3 wasn't the obvious choice?

At the time most users were on dialup - max speed 33-56kbits/sec.
RealAudio has quite sophisticated mechansism to adapt to user
connection speed (the bit rate of the feeds could be adjusted). Also
different codetable within a codecs could be used for different
channels (i.e Voice for Radio 4, Classical for R3 and general for
R1/r2) - this tuned sound output at low speeds.

Technically I think RealAudio may have been the best solution at the
time.

The BBC have always pushed technology sometimes they get a bit ahead of
the world - multicast looked good but it doesn't seem to have caught
on.

One of the biggest issues in recent times has not been audio technology
but legal such as performing rights and also how to be able to restrict
playback at a program level. This has probably constrained the
options.

What I think bpa was saying was that there have been 300-odd downloads
of the iPlayer add-on to the AlienBBC plugin, and was not referring to
the number of downloads/users of the main plugin itself. The iPlayer
add-on is a relatively recent, and dare I say somewhat obscure,
development to allow interfacing of the newer BBC radio menu
structures. For many people, including myself, not having this - or
even being aware of its existence - is not a big deal as you can do
straightforward things like playing Radio 4 live perfectly well without
it, and I suspect that this is what many users actually do.

I suspect that the figures would show a significantly larger user base
for the AlienBBC plugin - many hundreds if not thousands.

ALienBBC supplements the basic SC offerings.

SC just links into BBC WMA live streams which are only National and the
main one are restricted to UK.

AlienBBC provides access to Listen Again and also to RealAudio live
streams which means all National, regional and local BBC stations are

Re: [slim] Wireless Access Point / Router Compatability - Duet update plse !

2008-09-01 Thread maggior

I'll reply here since Wiki updating is not recommended prior to morning
coffee :-).

I am using a Linksys WRT 54GS. I have used it with stock FW up until a
month ago with no trouble. A month ago I upgraded to dd-wrt so I could
configure static DHCP addresses. I am using v24sp1 mega build (my
hardware is rev 1.1). No troubles at all with my SB.

I use WEP and do not broadcast my SSID. I have had an SB3 operating at
~20% signal with no performance issues.

My house is a center hall colonial with a finished basement. The
Linksys is in the basement and provides full wireless coverage
throughout the house, including the top floor. I upgraded the antennas
with a pair from Radio Shack that cost $7. This was done to improve
WiFi coverage on the deck for Logitec controller usage. This very
cheap upgrade gave me coverage on the deck and boosted my SB3 signal on
the top floor from ~20% to ~80%!

In short, I have found this router to be very compatible with my SB
devices.

SC7.1 added a My Radio Stations folder to do just this. It functions
just like the Favorites folder including adding sub-folders for however
you wish to categorize your Internet Radio stations.

There are a number of ways to add stations into this My Radio Stations
folder (or sub-folders). The easiest is to select a station via SC,
click the *heart* (add to favorites) then go to Favorites and click the
*X* (cut) then navigate to the My Radio Stations folder and use the
paste function.

If you already have your selected stations in your Favorites folder
then just use the cut paste function to add them to your My Radio
Stations folder.

I use a Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 with Tomato 1.18 firmware.
Running in Mixed B/G mode.
WPA Personal AES encryption.
SSID is broadcast.
No MAC filtering.
I have QoS switched on but use just the default rules (plus one for
Skype) - certainly none to expedite Squeezebox traffic.
I was careful to select a channel as far away from other nearby
wireless networks as I could get - my neighbours seem to be on channels
6, 11 and sometimes 1, so I went for channel 3.

All the Squeezebox hardware (1 x Transporter, 1 x SB2, 1 x Receiver, 2
x Controller) uses DHCP (with the Buffalo router being the DHCP
server).

The Squeezebox Controllers never have any problems.

The Squeezebox Receiver is normally connected by ethernet rather than
wireless (as are the other players). However, I did once have it
running wireless and it was absolutely fine playing FLAC. The router is
on the ground floor, the Receiver is in the loft. Distance between them
is probably about 20 feet, including two wooden floors.

I'm running quite old software versions: SqueezeCenter 7.0, Controller
firmware r2097. Since everything works so well, I've decided not to
risk upgrading. Since I don't use SqueezeNetwork, there are no issues
regarding using old firmware.

[slim] Transporter Forum??

2008-09-01 Thread ralphpnj

I noticed that the new SqueezeBox Boom now has it's very own Slim
Devices forum section and I was wondering why none of the other
devices, like the SqueezeBox Classic, The Duet or the Transporter, have
their forum sections. I think this would be very useful, especially for
the Transporter since the Transporter, like the SqueezeBox Boom, has
many more features and functionality than the SqueezeBox Classic.

[slim] iSqueeze for iPhone/iPod touch preview

2008-09-01 Thread Luke Redpath

I'm getting closer and closer towards releasing iSqueeze, a remote app
for SqueezeCenter for the iPhone/iPod touch. I expect to be ready for
beta testing in a couple of weeks, so if you're interested in trying it
out, please let me know in this thread or via PM. I'm looking for 5-10
beta testers to begin with. All beta testers will receive the final app
for free (as long it is possible for me to arrange this).

To whet your appetite, here's a sneak preview:

I was searching for a way to select firmware and found this thread where
you had experimented with earlier versions of the FW. It may be
unlikely, but I wonder if your problems could have originated there.

At any rate, it seems like you could use the same method to load the

I tried resetting using both the hold 'Add' and hold '1' methods but to
no avail. I'm happy enough in that my SB3 works again but it appears to
be stuck with the v86 firmware :-(

[slim] Power off digital output

2008-09-01 Thread u300

I recently upgraded Squeezecenter 7.0 to 7.2. I found that after the
upgrading, the squeezebox's digital output will not power off, after
shutting down the squeezebox using the controller. Before the upgrading
this was not a problem. In both cases (7.0 and 7.2) I have the option
'disable outputs when off' selected. In 7.0 this option can be found in
the Squeezecenter options in the tab 'players' audio settings.

Has anybody else experienced this, or do you know a solution to cope
with this? I downgraded to 7.0 again because I don't like to shut down
my DAC every time.

Sure.

If so, what upstream bandwidth would be required (just 1 client
 simultaneously),

Depends on the file format obviously. Uncompressed 16/44 WAV would be
around 1.3Mbit/s - everything else less than that.

what ports would I need to forward?

Off the top of my head 3483, 9000 and 9090.

 Will this slow down operation?
Depends on your latency.

Re: [slim] MusicIP implementation - bit odd?

2008-09-01 Thread schiegl

Hi,

would this pseudo function meet all (listed) requirements?

Code:

  request_mip_mix(seed-track/album/genre)

  if (seed-track/album/genre = playing)
  number-of-tracks-to-request=n+1
  call-mip-api
  remove-first-track-from-response
  else
  number-of-tracks-to-request=n
  call-mip-api

  if (option=play immediately)
replace playlist with mix, start playing
  if (option=append to playlist)
  append mix to player-playlist
  else (option=preview mix)
preview mix as normal-playlist (the same as it's now)

I agree that adding more options is not desirable. But i think you
cannot decide - based on context only - which of those opposing
functions like preview-first and play immediately to choose.

kind regards,
Markus

Note the song and artist titles show *with* spaces on the controller.
A bit of a guess here, but your problem might be related to some
display font changes they made to accommodate the smaller VFD on the
Boom, including fiddling with the space characters. Try deleting the
fontcache file on your SC installation. It should be in your cache
directory -- I think the standard Ubuntu location is
/var/lib/squeezecenter/cache/fontcache. Restart SC after deleting the
 the fontcache file.

[slim] Itunes scanning problem with 7.2

2008-09-01 Thread Andy D_calgary

I installed Squeezecenter 7.2 this week (7.2-22900@ Tuesday Aug 26). It
installed without a hitch, but when I am rescanning the library (i am
using Itunes) it does not complete the scan. The rescan of the library
was working OK after the initial install of Squeezecenter 7.2 but seems
to have crapped out when I rescanned the library via “Basic settings”

My Itunes library is on ReadyNAS. I am running Squeezecenter as an
application on my PC (Vista).

I did not have any trouble with the previous version of Squeezecenter.

I can't figure out if there is a problem with my data in Itunes (I
added a bunch of mp3's. They are playing OK in ITunes) or a bug with
7.2.

Success - I followed the instructions for a clean install and bingo!

I now have v112 of the firmware and SC 7.2.0 running happily :-)

You can also always go to SN to get the latest firmware (but you will
usually have to manually trigger it by holding brightness).

Re: [slim] MusicIP implementation - bit odd?

2008-09-01 Thread schiegl

Seb, just to get your idea: When do you want to use the play/add keys?
On the previously created Mix:-playlist (presshold the play key on
the remote, Create MusicIP Mix on the controller or the M-Icon in the
webinterface) or somewhere before?

It is my understanding we have two different issues
- playing a mix requires two actions (create mix + play/add mix)
- the seed-song should not be part of the mix if it's already playing

Am i wrong?

I think the second one should be easier to solve than the first one...

kind regards,
Markus

Strange, gave me a .zip file.

Inside that is a .ai which is an Adobe Illustrator file. I'm guessing
it is a vector drawing of the SlimDevices logo which you could supply
to a screen printing shop to get the logo on anything you wanted.

Thats obviously a very serious issue, did you try and find out what
caused it? I haven't heard of this happening before, so it certainally
isn't a common occurance.

You could try backing up your existing installation first.

The change from 7.1 to 7.2 is much gentler than the change form 7.0.1
to 7.1.

Your browser/OS must be fibbing to you, it is definitely a .7z file.

The Illustrator file is editable with the open source Inkscape vector

Re: [slim] Duet controller software update

2008-09-01 Thread simonjedrake

For many weeks now I have been unable to update my Duet to the latest
software which seems a pretty common problem on this forum.
Having tried everything I have found an INSTANT solution.
I simply registered my Duet on my already existing Squeezenetwork
accout, within minutes the upgrade was updating my Duet.

Re: [slim] Announcement Squeezecenter 7.2

2008-09-01 Thread didjean

Hi there,

I've just updated to 7.2. as I've just ordered my SBB ! I have a small
gap when I skip to next/previous song. I also can hear a tiny pop: I
see that my amp don't receive the signal when I hear that noise.

I use Apple Lossless Win XP SP2 + several plugins.

I had a similar problem with 6.5.4 but the gaps were longer:

you can use radio tune-in menu item any time you like, then add to
favourites, or add to the My Radio menu.

no need to rely on the Picks listings.
Any of the other radio menu options (Shoutcast, RadioTime, etc) are

Re: [slim] iSqueeze for iPhone/iPod touch preview

2008-09-01 Thread nolan

I'd be interested in checking out the beta. We have both an iphone, an
iPod touch and 3 squeezeboxes in our house.

As for price, I'd say anything under £5 is impulse buy territory for me
so call it £4.99 and you have a sale!

Of course this depends on the functionality compared with iPeng but it
would be cool to have a native app with the performance benefits that
would hopefully bring.. Will it be able to control plugins, i.e.
AlienBBC? That would be a big plus for me.
