Hi Shai, In Shlomi's E-mail message, which preceded your reply, there were two links. One link was a warning against being alone with females during technical conferences, because of the risk that they might set one up for a sexual assault accusation. This warning is valid not only in technical conferences but also in other situations unrelated to Free Software. It had nothing to say about whether female software developers are technically inferior to male software developers or vice versa. The warning's validity is also independent of our trusting (or not trusting) ESR's own word. If it is not a "women in tech" pressure group, it could, for example, be a frame up by a company whose business is harmed by the work of the developer in question. And if Linus is not in danger of being framed up, it could be another Free Software developer. The other link was about acceptance of pull requests from people with more diversity points even if those pull requests do not have sufficient technical merit to be accepted based upon their technical merit. ESR does not know to this day which label/s does 'djangoconcardiff' have, such as what is its gender. The links in Shlomi's second E-mail message are not related to this discussion (except for showing that ESR is a Renaissance man). The conclusion is that it does not really matter whether you trust ESR's word or not. --- Omer Zak (the proud(?) owner of two "diversity labels": Deaf and Elderly) On Thu, 2018-09-20 at 09:24 +0300, Shai Berger wrote: > Hi Shlomi, > > On Thu, 20 Sep 2018 02:42:50 +0300 > Shlomi Fish wrote: > > > Hi Shai, > > > > one note. > > > > On Thu, 20 Sep 2018 01:25:40 +0300 > > Shai Berger wrote: > > [... snipped ...] > > > At any case, I would highly discourage taking community advice > > > from > > > ESR. I can see how you'd read this into my earlier message, because I left out the part of the argument which, late last night, seemed kind of obvious to me: In the messages you linked, ESR throws around general accusations at "women-in-tech groups", based on an un-named source for whose reliability we are supposed to take ESR's own word. The very nature of the allegations casts huge doubt on them, but the onlt evidence which gives them an iota of credibility would be ESR's character. In this view, my argument is not "ESR is wrong here because he said other things with which I disagree" but rather "ESR is asking me to trust his judgment here, and on these subjects, I have reasons not to trust him". In this primitive state such a CoC actually promotes general misconduct via the abuse of the adjudication processes in order to unfairly leverage authority in a manner that is neither fair nor just, and in doing so it becomes nothing more than a protected means of misconduct as opposed to a viable means of establishing an acceptable code behavior within the group. With this in mind it may be in the interest of your community to rectify that issue by changing the procedures to reflect a more fair and modern concept of arbitration. ___ Discussions mailing list Discussions@hamakor.org.il http://hamakor.org.il/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/discussions

At a first glance, after > reading his post as well as community leader's posts, it seems he was > wronged. I do not have to make final judgement, so I don't. > At any case, I would highly discourage taking community advice from > ESR. The Code of Conducts say very little about how complaints should > be handled, and rightly so. > There are Enforcement Manuals for that, > although as far as I'm aware none of our conferences have officially > adopted any of those. > In the end, I believe you should trust the organizers and their CoC > committee to do the right thing. If you don't, it may be a sign that > you don't share enough of their values, and should indeed avoid their > events. > > > > I d

On Wed, 2018-09-19 at 12:40 +, co...@sdf.org wrote: > Hmm... where to start. > > At least BSD side, a lot of people *are* LGBT. Hmm... where to start. At least BSD side, a lot of people *are* LGBT. Most people are quiet about their personal life so I won't advertise that fact, but at least Kirk McKusick (author of BSD FFS, FreeBSD) is very open about his relationship with Eric Allman (author of sendmail). Is it surprising that they get upset if you spew hatred against LGBT people? Eric S. Raymond has to ask himself why he hasn't needed to know that contributors are women. My own name is unambigiously female. If you've seen a single commit or reply by me, you already know that I'm probably a woman. In a tight-knit community, it's really hard to miss big aspects about a person. I know my friends are gay because they mentioned their partners names which were unambigiously gendered. They also go together to conferences. I know my friend is trans because she discussed the travel difficulties following changing her legal documents. What happened is that Linus Torvalds finally realized that when he sends an email to the Linux mailing lists, there's at least a few hundred readers. It would be far more beneficial to the project if he toned it down with the abuse. Seeing another person abused is like hearing your dad scream at your mom. Yes, you're not the one taking the abuse, but it makes your home life miserable. I've been rude to others as well and it has occurred to me that as one of the loudest people in NetBSD, I make a big difference in the overall tone in discussions. I'm replying to hundreds of bugs made by people who otherwise see little interaction with developers. If their experience is positive and they are treated with respect, they are more likely to make an effort in the future. It's my obligation to the project to leave and calm down when I get upset. ___ Discussions mailing list Discussions@hamakor.org.il http://hamakor.org.il/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/discussions
