[Drakelist] FOR SALE Drake 4 Series Station (without Amp)
I am thinning the herd so my bride will not have to deal with so much stuff. I am offering for sale my Drake 4 series station. I have the R-4C, T-4XC, a C-4 station console, an FS-4 and a rebuilt AC-4 with the MS-4 speaker. The R-4C was new in 1973. It has the following Sherwood Mods: IC Product Detector, Custom front panel switch, and CF-600/6 and relay switch kit. The radio looks good with only ordinary wear and tear expected for its age. Works to specs. $550. The T-4XC puts out 70 watts on 20m. May need new driver. I have a new (NOS) set of finals and driver tubes that I will include. The rig looks good, again with ordinary wear and tear. $450. The C-4 looks good. I have the remote antenna switch, which works, and the power strip which needs a new heavy duty power cord. The clock actually works. The seconds wheel numbers have some minor damage at the 60 second point, but not bad. The rest of the counter looks good. $300. FS-4 works, and looks good. I don't have the original connection cable, but I'll include a homebrew cable that works fine. One of the panel light bulbs needs replacing. $450. AC-4, with KE9PQ rebuild, enclosed in an MS-4 cabinet with speaker. AC-4 $175. MS-4 $100. I would prefer selling as a package for $2025 plus shipping. I will only sell the FS-4 in conjunction with a sale of the R-4C These are nice units and have served me well. K0GFY R. Hunter Ellington 720-560-8139 P.O. First the confession. I am s stupid. I went to turn on my T-X4C and accidentally turned the function knob one position too far putting it in tune. I left the room for about 30 minutes and came back to find the transmitter in tune. An antenna was connected. I shut down the rig and let it cool down. Now, when I try to tune the rig, I get drive when I adjust the RF tune for a second and then it drops to zero. If I wait for minute, and go to tune the same thing happens. What have I done? I must be fairly lucky. I've shipped through UPS for years and have not had any problem. We have a local UPS Store here that does an exceptional job packing radios. Every time I have shipped a rig, the recipients always comment on the great packaging. It's also a very pleasing rig to the eye, and looks FB sitting next to its matching T-4X transmitter. I have no doubt whatsoever in my mind, that, had I known better back in 1983 --- when I stood "...at the crossroads" and took the quantum technological leap from my Heathkit SB-400 & Hallicrafters S-77A, to a brand new Yaesu FT-980 --- I would surely have shopped around for a good used set of Twins then... I was really racked with guilt about throwing my lot in with a microprocessed technology that the FT-980 presented, having had the ability of repairing anything & everything in my shack up to that time...and, like a fool, I did not even consider the possibilities of taking the Drake route, and instead, pondered the chances of buying a good, used Collins S-line, instead, back then. Here was the motivation for the experiment... I just recently purchased a TR-3/RV-3/AC-3/W-7 on eBay, and the the shopping costs were shown as $44.00. I assumed, since I had know reason to think otherwise, this what what the seller specified for shipping charges. I was a little surprised when the actual shipping charges came in at $120.00. (I have always sold items specifying the buyer will bay the actual shipping charges.) We agreed to split the difference (of $44 and $120) and all went well. However, I got to thinking the shipping costs might be generated by eBay. It appears this is the case. So I just sent the seller the remaining shipping amount to make sure everything was square; and he did not get the short end of eBay's "friendly" shipping cost "estimate". So I guess the bottom line is to make sure, if it is not explicitly stated in the auction, to confirm with the seller what the actual shipping costs are. Does the meter read about the same plate current as on the other bands, or is it considerably less? Is the neutralization adjusted correctly? Does the plate current dip coincide with maximum output? I've been giving some serious thought of late here to do what I probably should have done some 24 years ago, specifically, buy a good set of Drake Twins. Back in '83, I elected to retire my venerable old Heathkit SB-400 / Hallicrafters S-77A combo, in favour of the latest & greatest from the Far East... I've rued that day every time something major goes out with this flashy digital winking & blinking contraption. Maybe I'll learn enough here to know which version of the "R4" series of receiver I should have, & the subtleties between all of the different variants thereof...I hope so, anyway, & look forward to the day that I might have some Twins of my own here to use, enjoy, and actually REPAIR myself, as the need may arise... ~73!~ Eddy VE3CUI - VE3XZ

I hooked up a 1.5k resisitor and a .01 microfarad cap between the #5 pin and the center conductor of the coax cable next to it. It's tight work but the results are most satisfying. I measured the passband with Spectrogram and it appears I've added about 200hz to the bottom of the rig. I have the .pdf file showing the mod. [drakelist] Stupid Moves
I have an R4C and T4XC that I love dearly. However, as I was passing the rigs one day, I turned them on as I went to answer the phone. Twenty minutes later, when I got back to the radios, I realized that I had put the transmitter into tune mode. The finals, while not happy, check out okay. However, when I turn the radio on and tune up I get 100 watts or so output initially, but after about five minutes (or when the radio gets to operating temp.) the output goes to zero. Any thoughts as to what damage I have caused? Could it be as simple as a bad CR19 diode? Any help will be appreciated. R. Hunter Ellington, Esq.
