[Elecraft] [K3] Wierd action
Was using the K3 in the NAQP test this weekend at 100 watts using beta version 2.15. After about 2 hours of operation on the same band I noticed that the frequency on the dial was changing on its own. Lost several contacts as a result. Went to config menu:pa temp saw that the temp was 35C and it was decreasing by single digit as I watched, just like the frequency. I reload version 2.02 and all was ok for the next 30 min. than the contest was over for me. This is a very strange behavior. Anyone else notice this? [Elecraft] RE: Elecraft Digest, Vol 51, Issue 33 (LP-PAN / LP-Bridge).
Hi Howard. I don't know what they used, but they have a beta of LP-Bridge, and I have a beta of the next release of Scott's program. You will not need to set up anything for the IF frequencies, except to tweak a global "fine tuning" control in PowerSDR to zero beat LP-PAN with the K3. In my case, it amounts to 41 Hz to bring them in sync. All K3 band changes, adjustments, including IF shift, and 5-pole filter offsets, are automatically transmitted to PowerSDR from LP-Bridge to keep the programs synced in terms of IF center frequency. LP-Bridge is coming along nicely, and should be released soon (as well as Scott's v 0.92 of PowerSDR IF Stage). 73, Larry N8LP Message: 16 Date: Sat, 19 Jul 2008 14:20:32 + From: Howard Klein <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [Elecraft] RE: Elecraft Digest, Vol 51, Issue 33 To: Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Scott and Lee, Thank you for a great job and service to the ham community. For Digital modes, MK2R+ uses audio from the Line Out ... audio selection is controlled by the RECORDING/DIGITAL controls - not the headphone switching matrix. [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement
Good Evening, Days have been cool during the last week. Each morning I awoke to a heavy fog which burned off by noon. I have been on the verge of lighting a fire on more than one occasion. But it is nice weather for cutting, splitting, hauling, and stacking wood. I will be warm this winter. Just today I broke through another layer and found the edge of the property. Many of my very large trees are now lying on my neighbor's land. Since they'll not be back for another forty years they will never notice my incursion. Luckily this wood is well seasoned and uphill from where it is to go. Both of these facts are very good for me. Twenty meters has been less than helpful this week. My daily sked became almost impossible. I think we got through only a few times for only a few minutes. Mostly it was too hard to hear more than a presence without any form of communication. However, I did see a lone sunspot on SpaceWeather today. Who knows, it may actually help our propagation tomorrow ;) I know there will be storms in the center of the continent; it is summer. The last few weeks this simple fact has forced the end of the second net. Even twenty meters has been effected by it. ECN entered its sixth year in early June. I hope we will start moving up the other side of the solar minimum soon. Next week is the Flight of the Bumble Bees. I think I will walk to the top of the mountain and see how I get out. With the price of gas I do believe walking is my best option. My ATS-3 and a few wires will do just fine; nice and light so hiking will be easy. 5 watts out on 80, 40, 30, and 20 when the batteries are fresh. BB #TEN. Re: [Elecraft] rtty and MK2R+ K-3
Of course overdriving the sound card will cause distortion, and it's also true that the amount of drive required depends, as you say, on the nature of the device being driven. That's why the statement caught my attention - taken at face value, it implied an absolute limit, without reference to the gain of the driven device. For example, in my case, it happens that LINE OUT is set to 25 to correctly drive the sound card in my PSK31 setup because as it happens, I'm using a cable with some attenuation built in. Anyway, anything that Lyle writes I read quite closely, so thought that I would ask! Bob, That is highly dependent on the computer sound card. Lyle has recommended the setting of 10 to keep from overdriving the input of the sound card (overdriving the sound card will cause distortion). The 'problem' is *not* the K3 creating any distortion. Of course, if you are driving a device that needs more audio than the typical sound card, the range from 10 to 100 may be required - it all depends on the device. 73, Don W3FPR Bob Cunnings wrote: Interesting, that's the first time I've seen that advice. [Elecraft] Sanity check on VOX settings
Greetings, I just picked up a new Heil Pro-Set PLUS headset for my K3 and I've been trying to get the VOX settings adjusted appropriately. Keep in mind that my shack is my bedroom which is very quiet. The MIC is connected via the rear 1/8" mic/phone connectors. Now that I have my K3/100, I cannot justify keeping my KPA100 and KAT100, so I have reluctantly put them up for auction on eBay. (The K2 itself will go to the grave with me!) They are neatly packaged in an EC2 enclosure which can be quickly connected and disconnected from the QRP K2. [Elecraft] K3 headphone level
Hi folks: I've read with interest the recent discussions about headphone level on the K3, and specifically problems with Heil headsets. I have found that the level in my ProSet is fine for my purposes using either the AF GAIN HI or LO in the K3 configuration menu. Our FD group used a K3 and Heil ProSet this year, and we were really hoping to configure the K3 to have the speaker and headphones both active. When we tried to use the SPKR+PH configuration, we found that the speaker and headphone levels were mismatched such that when the AF gain was adjusted to get adequate headphone level, the speaker was excessively loud, to the point where the loud speaker audio was annoying to the operator wearing the headphones. A quick review of the schematic for the K3 leads me to believe that the headphone level is programmable. By programmable, I don't mean in the sense that it can be configured from the existing user configuration menus, but programmable in the sense that the headphone driver ( U2, an LM4811MM, see K3 DSP IF: DAC AUDIO, page 3 of 9) can have its gain controlled by an up/down pulse provided by U17, the EPM240. What do folks think about a possible future enhancement to make headphone audio level user-programmable? It would address issues with different headphone brands where users can't seem to get enough headphone audio, and it would allow independent headphone and speaker levels to address the issue that I described. 73, ed N9EP ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [K3] [Elecraft] BCB sensitivity
Drew, For BCB operation using a 100 ft wire for an antenna (hopefully you also connect to some form of ground screen), I would expect the inductance in the KAT3 to be quite low. I would suggest adding a supplemental inductor in series with the antenna wire. I am not going to suggest just how much, but you can experiment. Using an antenna analyzer might be informative if you can find one that goes that low. 73, Don W3FPR [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Ok, Chuck, thanks alot. That explains all. [Elecraft] ERR TXG
Hi, Gary from Elecraft gave me an important hint and so the rx of my K3 is now working. It seems, that if you are using just one filter(I use the standard 5-pole filter) it must be in slot 1.I thought slot 3 would also be okay, but it wasn´t.So I thought everything was fine then, until I wanted to do the low power calibration again. I couldn´t calibrate my K3 on 30m and above. On some of the bands I had some output, but on 20 and 12m there was no output at all. I did the transmit crystal filter selection again. I don´t have an AM filter installed, but how should I set it(the K3 asks me to do so...)-I can´t transmit without an Am-filter, can I? Any ideas? 73, Chris-OE5CSP -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/ERR-TXG-tp573367p573367.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. My experience is that if MMTTY is in use, two serial connections are required, even when the contest logger integrates it well. [Elecraft] [K3] ATU Manual Adjust not working in Beta 02.16
Windy asked: How do you tune the ATU optimally for BCB, since you can't transmit? I am finding with Beta 02.16/00.02/0.184 that I can't adjust ATU L and C values. I select CONFIG: KAT3 LC Set then tap ATU Tune and I see the following CA 0.00 nF in VFO A L 0.00 uH in VFO B Moving the VFO A and VFO B knobs does not change the values. Moving VFO A I believe is really doing something else; I heard relay clicking just as if I had not tapped ATU. When I tap ANT I do see CA change to Ct. Moving VFO B apparently was doing something invisible also as explained below. After the above when I tried to auto tune after going back out of the menu system (ATU set to Auto) I got ERR TXF. Apparently while trying to adjust the CA and L values all the time seeing zero values per above I ended up editing the bandwidth of the 2.7 KHz filter installed in slot 3. I changed that back to 2.7 KHz and the radio now auto tunes. Have I forgotten something? Something is definitely not working as expected on my end. I am wondering if the ATU LC Set firmware got messed up in this beta. For reference here is what the manual says in case others wish to find out if their ATU LC Set got broken also. KAT3 ATU mode; normally set to BYP or AUTO (you can alternate between these settings using the ATU switch). Modes L1-L8, C1-C8, and Ct are used to test KAT3 relays. Mode LCSET allows manual adjustment of L/C/net settings. When in this mode, tapping ATU TUNE shows the L & C value; C is changed with VFO A, L is changed with VFO B, and ANT toggles between Ca and Ct . [Elecraft] [K3] CW Memory Anomaly
I was using the CW memories and decided to adjust the speed while the message was playing. Since the Speed/Mic selection was in Mic, I tapped the knob and the message stopped. But it didn't switch to Speed. And when I tapped the knob again, it plays bits and pieces of the remaining memory. When it finally finishes (after multiple taps), it switches to Speed and everything works normally. If I press the memory button again, it chains the remaining message with what is in the memory, finishes the message and then everything works ok (although I still have to tap Speed/Mic again to get to Speed). This is probably not a serious problem, but it's probably a software bug. 73, Bud N7CW ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] BCB sensitivity [K3]
Ok, my final conclusion (i promise) Manually adjusting the L and C values of the ATU DOES have an effect on BCB reception (had my RF gain turned down before, so seemed like there was no difference). Re: [Elecraft] 6m preamp description??
Hi Jim, Been there with the PT2. It worked somewhat on 6M. It was quite useful on 10,12,15,17 and 20M as well. It seemed to have too high a noise figure and added significant noise on 6M. So it was doubtful that it would help me with the weak ones. I bought a Down East Microwave kit ($35). It is significantly better. It supposedly has too much gain (15-18 db) but I've not noticed this to be a problem. The nominal noise figure is under 1db so it doesn't seem to add noise. Of course, the best place would be at the antenna, but that isn't going to happen. Now to figure out how to switch in the PT2 for HF and LF RX antenna reception. 73 de Brian/K3KO Robert Tellefsen wrote: > > Thanks Jim > I've heard good things about their products. > Glad yours is working well. > I'm going to try patching in my Ameco PT-2 > preamp, just as an experiment. Please advise. Best 73's, Rolf / SMØYQC K2 #4979 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. Re: [Elecraft] 6m preamp description??
I brought a 6m preamp kit from Down East Microwave. It cost only slightly more than if I had sourced the components in the UK. The end result means that now I can hear the K3 noise level increase when I add an antenna. 73 Stewart G3RXQ On Fri, 18 Jul 2008 10:33:21 -0700, Jim Brown wrote: > On Fri, 18 Jul 2008 09:32:42 -0700, Bob Tellefsen wrote: > >> I've heard that there is a prototype 6m external preamp >> being tested. >> > I bought an ARR preamp several years ago when I was living in > Chicago.
