Re: [Elecraft] K3 power output on SSB
Well, what I do is when I change frequencies, I go to cw and key it until the power comes way up. Yes, it is a pain. Some may say you can't see a difference on the s-meter but if you use an amp with tubes, that "little extra" that takes time to come up makes a difference. This could be tweaked. -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/K3-power-output-on-SSB-tp4818879p4835445.html Sent from the [K3] mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] K3 Keying Up For A Split Second When Power Button Is Pushed
Is it normal for the K3 to key up right away for a split second when turned on. I have a Drake L4B with a soft key behind the radio. If by accident the amp is out of the stand-by mode and you turn on the K3, it will key the amp for a split second. Is this normal? Don't get me wrong, I try to put it in standby but every now and then I'll forget. -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/K3-Keying-Up-For-A-Split-Second-When-Power-Button-Is-Pushed-tp4835488p4835488.html Sent from the [K3] mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] K2 Pwr Out Problems
David, While it is quite unusual, there indeed could be a problem with the KIO2. Plug in the KIO2 and check the voltage at KIO2 J2 pin 7. It should be from 4.5 to 6 volts (that voltage comes from the KSB2 board). You should see the same voltage at Control Board P4 pin 7. If the voltage is lower than expected, unplug the KIO2 and again check the voltage at CB P4 pin 7. Did it increase? If so, then examine the KIO2 for the solder bridge that is causing it. Note that the KIO2 has no circuits in the path for this "EXT ALC" signal - the KIO2 is simply a conduit for the wiring coming from KIO2 J1 pin 4. It could also be that your K2 to computer cable has a solder bridge between pins 3 and 4 which could cause the same condition. 73, Don W3FPR David Douglass wrote: > Hi All, > > My K2 seems to have developed a power output problem. > > Set-up is a QRP K2, with SSB, internal ATU and KIO2 options. > > I get full power output on CW OK, but only get a Max of about 1w RF output on > SSB. > > If I remove the top lid, and therefore disconnect the internal ATU and KIO2, > I then get full output on SSB and CW. > > I've also tried just plugging in the ATU and leaving the KIO2 out of line, > and this seems to give full output?? > > Could there be a problem on the KIO2 that is causing me to loose SSB output?? > Leaving the KIO2 inline but turning it on and off in the menu does not effect > things. > > Any ideas.. > > Thanks > > David, VK2NU > __ > Elecraft mailing list > Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft > Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm > Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net > > This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net > Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html > > > > No virus found in this incoming message. > Checked by AVG - www.avg.com > Version: 9.0.791 / Virus Database: 271.1.1/2781 - Release Date: 03/31/10 > 02:32:00 > > __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] Heil HC-4, HC-5
Maybe this has already been answered, but the Heil AD-1K, the red Kenwood adapter, is the appropriate adapter for the Elecraft K3 8-pin Foster connector. The K3 also has a back panel 3.5mm jack that accepts the Heil microphone plug directly. Some prefer front connections, some prefer back. I sometimes prefer having the headphone connected through the front panel so I can pull it out and get speaker audio without fiddling with a menu. When the headphones are on the front panel, it seems easier to also have the microphone connection on the front. But all my microHAM connections are back panel, and when I'm set up for a contest, it's all back panel. 73 de Dick, K6KR -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Robert 'RC' Conley Sent: Wednesday, March 31, 2010 7:23 PM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] Heil HC-4, HC-5 I'm about to purchase a Heil Proset to use with my K3. I've had NO problems at all with N1MM sending CW to ONE RADIO, either with DTR or the parallel port. It does NOT do well with two radios SO2R. For that you need WinKey. By all means, use DTR on the serial port that you use to control the radio unless you want to do SO2R. Just go into the Config menu (long push) and set the K3 to take CW from DTR. Then set either QSK for full break-in or VOX, depending on your preferences. There's no good reason to bother with the parallel port. Re: [Elecraft] Heil HC-4, HC-5
Depends on what you want to sound like. HC4 is very narrow. In my opinion, it is lousy under any circumstances. HC5 is less so but still very narrow. The new HC6 gives very good almost HI FI results with the K3. I have tried them all with the K3 and that is my opinion. If you use the wide band HC6, you can use the equalizer on the K3 to match either the HC4 or HC5. 73 de W6BK On Mar 31, 2010, at 7:22 PM, Robert 'RC' Conley wrote: > I'm about to purchase a Heil Proset to use with my K3. > Which "AD-1" will I need..??? > __ > Elecraft mailing list > Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft > Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm > Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net > > This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net > Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K1 KFL1-4 Alignment Question
Keith, You are looking for a peak - that is, the point in the adjustment range where the output power goes down on each side of that point. So, yes, you tune for maximum power output - but if the power goes too much above 2 watts, exit from TUNE and re-enter (that will reset the power to a lower level). Continue by repeating as many times as necessary until you find the peak. When the power level is high, the peak is not as obvious, so you are likely to miss it. 73, Don W3FPR K Price wrote: > Been searching the archives and can not find an exact fit. I aligned the receiver by using another rig to transmit into a dummy load and peaking the signals. All appears well on 40, 30, 20 & 17 meters although 20 meters seems lighter in volume than the rest. Now I am trying to align the transmitter. Maybe it is late and I am new to all of this but what am I aiming for with "adjust c4, c6, cE, CF (etc) to maximum power output"? If I go much above 2 watts it says I need to exit the tune mode and try again. So does that mean I am aiming for 2 watts? Or should I be trying to get my power out as high (5 watts) as possible? [Elecraft] K2 Pwr Out Problems
Hi All, My K2 seems to have developed a power output problem. Set-up is a QRP K2, with SSB, internal ATU and KIO2 options. I get full power output on CW OK, but only get a Max of about 1w RF output on SSB. If I remove the top lid, and therefore disconnect the internal ATU and KIO2, I then get full output on SSB and CW. I've also tried just plugging in the ATU and leaving the KIO2 out of line, and this seems to give full output?? Could there be a problem on the KIO2 that is causing me to loose SSB output?? Leaving the KIO2 inline but turning it on and off in the menu does not effect things. Any ideas.. Re: [Elecraft] K3: Mike input no longer works.
If I recall correctly that microphone is an electret. You have to set the bias on the mic setting for it to work. Go to Main:Mic Sel setting. While in that setting hit 2 to turn bias on or off. You may also want to play with sensitivity setting (hi or lo) by hitting 1. See manual p.20. I've set CONFIG: PTT KEY to OFF-DTR and I have set N1MM to key via the DTR line. I allow the VOX to do the t/r switching; it works with semi- and full QSK. No connection is needed except for the regular RS232 cable between the computer and the K3. The only gotcha is that during bootup the computer toggles the DTR line several times. So between contests I turn the CONFIG parameter off; and when it's on I'm careful to set TX TEST whenever I boot the computer. I'm using a 2.5 GHz single-core cpu running XP. I have absolutely no problems with the CW generated by N1MM, but I don't use spotting or SO2R or anything fancy. -- Vic, K2VCO Fresno CA http://www.qsl.net/k2vco/ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] CW speed is diferent in N1MM and in K3
Hello, I am setting my K3. I followed K9YC instructions at http://www.mail-archive.com/elecraft@mailman.qth.net/msg74073.html and have CW sending from N1MM and with my Bencher paddles connected directly in the K3. But is a difference in the speed. I setup N1MM and K3 speed to the same, but is a noticeable difference in both. K3 go fast than N1MM I don´t have any instrument to know wich one is the correct. Just a note for all. I am a new owner of a great K3. Was not quite satisfied with the RF gain As it seemed to cut off the receive too quick. [Elecraft] N1MM & K3
Good evening to all. I have a new computer, and I've installed N1MM logger. My question du jour is: Has anyone used N1MM to provide CW keying via a COM port? Is it satisfactory? Are there any "gotcha's"? How about via the parallel port? Is it satisfactory? Are there any "gotcha's" there?? I'm sure I will have more questions as I proceed. 73, George T Daughters, K6GT CU in the California QSO Party (CQP) October 2-3, 2010 __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] K3: Mike input no longer works.
I haven't been on sideband for several months and this past weekend I decided to try to pick up a country or three during the contest. I switched the K3 over to USB on 15M, put the Heil Proset on, turned on VOX and gave a little whistle and nothing happened. Tried PTT with no luck there either. I didn't have the time to get into the problem too deep at the time but now I have a little time to devote. I can't really remember the last time I used SSB but it used to work. I have tried looking at all the appropriate menu settings and can't find where I have set something weird. The mike won't work on either the front or rear panel. The Proset mike works on other equipment. Here's what I have: K3 #123 FW: 3.79 D1: 2.54 D2: 0.00 FL: 1.08 NO SUB RCVR, NO DVR All current mods done by Aptos as of 8 or 9 months ago. Re: [Elecraft] K3 / FLDIGI problem...
IIRC, I had difficulties getting fldigi to work with the K3.xml file from the fldigi site. I had better luck with the one from G4ILO's site ( http://www.g4ilo.com/files/k3.xml ). Never took the time to figure out the difference. That said, I've been having trouble using RigCAT with the 3.20 betas and have had to switch back to Hamlib, which seems to work OK. So I'd suggest trying to use Hamlib and see if you get better results. If that works and you still want to use RigCAT, try G4ILO's xml file. 73 -- Joe KB8AP On Mar 31, 2010, at 3:25 PM, John Ragle wrote: > I am: > > Using WIN 7 Ultimate. > > Using Elecraft K3/100 set to "Data A" or to "USB." Re: [Elecraft] K3 / FLDIGI problem...
John, Since your software is operating at 19200 bps, have you set the K3 CONFIG: RS232 menu parameter to 19200 as well. If the software application is smart enough (K3 Utility is), it can change the K3 port data rate, but many cannot so you have to do it manually at the K3 end. 73, Don W3FPR John Ragle wrote: > I am: > > Using WIN 7 Ultimate. > > Using Elecraft K3/100 set to "Data A" or to "USB." Re: [Elecraft] K3 / FLDIGI problem...
John, Have you tried Hamlib to see if you are able to establish a connection to your rig? If Hamlib worked and RigCat didn't that could narrow down your field of possibilities. Also, does the Elecraft utility communicate with your rig using this configuration? 73, Dave. [Elecraft] Spot function
Last night i had K3_EZ up and was looking at all the neat things in my radio. Well last night i had some automatic upgrades done and the computer rebooted. Today the Spot function gives me a tone to zero beat with but the meter doesn't give me any indications and it doesn't auto tune to CW sigs as it has previously. What could have happened here? Always something new to learn about this thing! Can't do without it tho. [Elecraft] K3 PSK31 threshold/ 10W amp duty cycle.
HI all, 2 quick questions: I did a search through the firmware release notes and didn't see anything about the PSK text decode threshold feature being enabled. Still seems non-functional in my K3 (which has the latest FW), so I assume this still isn't implemented? Second, I couldn't find much about the full power duty-cycle of the K3's 10 power amp. I'm curious if I shouldn't run full blast on data modes, i.e. back off to 5W? Meanwhile, still trying to find something wrong with mine on my lunch break and so far no success. I went to Best Buy and got their Bill-n-Ted's Excellent USB -> RS-232 adapter with my fingers crossed hoping it used the Prolific chipset. Sure enough it did. So DL'd the MacOS X drivers and K3 utility off Elecraft's site so now my laptops can talk back and forth to the rig. Next I might try getting it working with CocoaModem. 73, LS W5QD -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/K3-PSK31-threshold-10W-amp-duty-cycle-tp4832991p4832991.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] DX Doubler/K3 issue

However, a much easier "fix" is to use a separate power supply for the low voltage accessories and ground (bond) any power supply chassis ONLY to the station common RF/safety ground. By connecting the DC return from the high current device directly to the power supply and only to the power supply as well as keeping the heavy "bonding" paths to the common safety/RF ground, the impedance of the alternate paths through low voltage accessories is generally high enough to prevent the return current diversion. 73, ... That's nice. Unfortunately, vehicles sold to the public often do NOT have anything approaching bonded chassis. After buying a Toyota Sequoia several years ago during a Chicago winter, I took it into the heated loading dock at K9IKZ's business to scope out the installation of an HF rig. First thing we checked was body bonding. It wasn't pretty -- for all practical purposes, ALMOST NONE of the body parts showed anything approaching a low DC resistance between them. We found bolts inches apart with 30 ohms between them, and almost ten ohms between the battery negative terminal and the chassis! Tom -- it's really good to see you here. Your experience and engineering chops are greatly appreciated. 73, Jim K9YC __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] DX Doubler/K3 issue
Tom You mention bonding in vehicles and this rang a large bell with me: all military vehicles, land sea and air, require a separate dc return other than the chassis for the battery negative terminal. Filter caps for emc are returned to the chassis of the equipment which is strongly bonded to the chassis of the vehicle and dc return is a separate wire to the battery supply negative. Transmitter/receiver coax terminals make it tricky. For me, raiding the kitchen and borrowing all the metal cupcake baking trays I could find worked great. Heavy enough to not worry about knocking over, big enough to get my fingers in to and metal so no worries about static. [Elecraft] K3 Kit Hardware Organizer
After looking at all those different pieces and sizes of hardware, I went to my local pharmacy and bought a plastic 4-week pill organizer. I placed some low-tack painter's tape (the blue stuff) over the lids and labeled each compartment with its contents. The advantage of this was having the lids -- if anyone (such as myself!) were to knock the sorter off the bench, nothing would spill. It worked great -- much better than the muffin pans or paper cups I've used in the past for hardware. 73, Jeff, K6JW K3 #3398 __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] K3 #4116 finished
Hi all, Well the K3 #4116 build finished up this am. Last night I was ill with allergies (our spring Juniper season is here hi hi) and couldn't sleep, so I just kept going back to the table and pecking at the K3 in between allergy meds and etc until early in the am. Finally, I noticed I was out of boards and parts. Then a little while ago after a fitful, sniffly nap the manual just said well, you're done now so go do the calibration. Just got through with those and the rig is currently working as far as I can tell. And just like with my K2, I havn't had any problems with the build and the rig seems to function fine in the end first time out. Maybe I'll find what's not working right as I go through and try out all the functions or something hi hi The only goof was I put the tie wrap on the TCXO module wrong and had to cut it off. No spare was supplied and I had another smaller wrap that ended up being too short to use. The module is a tight fit in the socket and is right down, so I'm probably going to simply leave it off. Is there a definite reason to tie wrap the TCXO onto the socket? Like I said it's such a tight fit it doesn't seem like the wrap is necessary. I'll go get another one today tho if there's a definite need for it (during the calibration, it was only off WWV 10mhz by maybe 10 or 20 hz and zero-beated just fine that I could tell) I also can't think of anything that was really tough about the build. Even the front panel attachment went pretty smoothly. The parts inventory was probably the hardest part and that was about it. So, all that's left now I think it just to learn how to use the rig, hi hi. And get a KUSB adapter.. 73, LS W5QD -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/K3-4116-finished-tp4830763p4830763.html Sent from the [K3] mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Gary... I am putting a thin shim of vinyl tape around the rubber bumper on the right side of the bail...1 layer. I was not serious about the wobble constituting a "serious defect," just joshing some of the other "reportage" that I've seen on this reflector. There is no debris on the rear feet. Like my K2, it takes a medium-sized gorilla to unfold the bail, but I got it down on its back on the floor, and between me and the dog, we got it unfolded. (Again, a waggish comment.) I figured if the reflector will support over a dozen comments about egg cartons/paper cups, I might as well indicate my pleasure with MY new toy. Now if there were just some activity on 20 or 15... [Elecraft] ERR TXG in VFO B, now what?
After almost 2 years of use, I finally decided to install some of the mods. All was well after installing the first few mods. RX/TX full power, etc. However I did not do any of the calibrations. Tonight I installed the last mod that I was going to do at this time. Should have stopped earlier. The mod I installed last was the "Improving the Immunity of the Rear-Panel RS232 and Audio Connectors to RF" mod. The one that jumpers out the RFCs. Well, it went well. I put jumpers on L3, L5, L8 and installed the Microphone Choke bypass jumper on the REV XD Audio I/O module. Then I put a jumper on L1 on the Remote I/O module. Put the K3 back together and started testing. COMMENT: The only mods that I put in had to deal with removing the bottom front cover and the I/O modules. NONE that required removing the front panel or KRX3. The Synthesizer mod was already in (for weeks). I put it all back together and the RX was fine. Did not try to XMIT. That worked fine last night and I did not do anything that had anything to do with XMIT. I thought. I then decided to do all the realignments. I started with the TX Gain. The 5 w part worked GREAT. The 50 watt part failed with an ERR TXG in VFO B. Since then - - I reloaded the firm ware: 3.79 - did nothing I loaded an old version as I never did the TX Gain calibration with this rev firmware: did nothing I tried to calibration with my other K3 on the current 3.79 firmware - worked fine I then did a save from my good K3 and loaded the config in my 'bad' K3 - did nothing I took the bad one apart to see if there was anything I could see that was wrong - NOTHING VISIBLE I put it all back together and tried the manual TX GAIN - not using the GUI - the 5 watt worked fine / the 50 watt failed at about 6 watts again with ERR TXG in VFO B I then decided to try the Synthesizer calibration just to see if anything else did not work. That worked fine. According to the manual ERR TXG indicates the gain constant is "out of range". Not sure what that means or what to do next. The book also suggests that the problem could be related to a band-pass alignment or one of the low pass filters. So, I tried the manual alignment on all bands (160 - 10)- CONTINUED TO FAIL with roughly 5 - 7 watts showing in VFO B display area. The ONLY thing I did in the 100w amp area was to install the diode for 12v sense. I already tried removing that ... no change. There actually is a much more common and much more severe issue that gets almost totally ignored, dc current paths from external power supplies. The high supply current radios draw causes a ground loop when we use low voltage supplies that have the negative supply voltage grounded at the power supply or any other point in the system other than at the radio. When the radio has any sort of amplitude varying RF output, the rapidly varying dc input current creates a pretty good voltage drop across the negative supply lead. Since that lead is grounded at more than one point, it drives the supply negative to a different potential at different points in the system, and the rig's chassis and other chassis "wiggle around" at different potentials at the RF envelope's modulation rate as PA current varies from quiescent to 20 amps or more peak current on envelope peaks. The effect is almost indistinguishable from rectification of the RF envelope. As a matter of fact many blame this problem on RFI because it sounds like RFI even though it is "AFI". While bonding all the chassis helps a great deal, the real issue is a design shortfall in the negative rail wiring of the power supply and our equipment. The best fix for this problem is to not have common chassis grounds on low voltage sensitive signal leads, a good design isolates the sensitive signal leads with isolation transformers. This problem is a whole lot like the problem we create in vehicles when we run the negative radio lead to the battery negative post. People designing gear have to learn to not create a harmful path. I can't imagine having an audio interface device that connects audio and signal lead grounds all together at low frequencies or dc! The voltage induced this way is typically hundreds of times higher in magnitude than voltage induced by flux leakage from power transformers. Worse yet, it is an extremely low impedance source making it very difficult to "bypass". 73 Tom __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
