[Elecraft] K2 QRP fun in ARRL DX SSB

2012-03-04 Thread Bill W4ZV
Last summer I picked up a mis-assembled KSB2 on the cheap to add to my 2004
vintage K2. After fixing a few assembly problems and installing the updated
crystal set, I checked it out with a few QSOs but had not used it much on
SSB since then.

Yesterday I decided to pull it out and try a few QSOs on 10m in the ARRL
contest. Wow what a pleasant experience! The SSB received audio sounds
absolutely great and my TX audio (Heil HC4 headset) worked well enough to
get through to most stations in just a few calls. I was amazed to actually
break a modest pileup on FO5QB!

After ~1 hour of purely SP operating, I had 81 QSOs in 24 countries,
including all continents except Asia (not heard due to poor conditions). Of
course stacked 6el Yagis deserve a little credit! :-)

Thank you Elecraft for a great QRP rig...even on SSB!

As good as the Elecraft stuff is the Antenna makes a big difference.

I could hear and work guys on the big loop that were below noise on the

Re: [Elecraft] - tuning rate

2012-03-04 Thread Barry
Don,

I'm aware of that and have it turned on. However, the small knob still
doesn't change the rate fast enough for my tastes and you can't really spin
it fast because the knob doesn't have enough mass and is too close to the
VFO B tuning knob.

You guys who don't like this feature - don't use it. Some of us still tune
the bands rather than point and click :-)

Barry W2UP

Guys,

Read the K3 manual (especially the menu entries)- it is already
included in the package.
Set the menu VFO CRS to whatever you desire (note that it is per mode).
Then set VFO OFS to ON and you can use the RIT knob to tune in the VFO
Coarse steps. Yes, it does not work if RIT or XIT is turned on, but
works FB when they are off.

2012-03-04 Thread goldtr8
I spent way more than that on the shack so it looks like I should have a
big antenna budget!!

However there is the XYL antenna filter also in the mix that prevents
budget and certain things in the yard. However slowly but steady
always wins or good things come to those who wait.

Clearly in my limitd antenna farm so far the loop performs better than I
even imagined it would and I still have a section that I can re-shoot
with the spud gun to get it higher.

I wonder how many ops that want a selectable faster tuning rate have VFO OFS
set
to ON?

From the manual:

VFO OFS

If ON , the RIT/XIT offset control can be used to tune VFO A in large steps
when
both RIT and XIT are turned off. The step sizes vary with mode (see VFO CRS),
and are the same as the Coarse VFO tuning rates.

I use the RIT control in this way for large excursions and find it very useful.

[Elecraft] P3, RS-232 and Logging Software

2012-03-04 Thread Chuck Stover
Greetings,

I just introduced at P3 and KPA500 to my K3 station and have a little glitch
that I have been unable to solve.

I used a logging program called nGenLog which has played very well with the K3
and SteppIR SDA 100 antenna controller prior to adding the P3 to the mix.  What
is happening is at what seems to be random intervals (anywhere from a seconds
to 20 minutes or more) and not tied to any specific event the logging software
disconnects from the rig giving an error message that it could not communicate
with the K3 and to check the settings.  Of course I can no longer control the
rig with the software, get freq. band or mode information back to the logger
and the SteppIR controller no longer autotracks frequency.  If I power down the
P3 the logging program will stay connected and all works fine.  The frequency
of disconnects seem less with the host baud rate set at 9600.

The RS232 connections go like this.  From the computer USB via a KUSB adapter
to a straight through Y connector (not a null modem) to the PC port on the P3.
The SteppIR SDA 100 is connected to the other leg of the Y.
From the P3 I am using the supplied cable from the P3 XCVR port to the K3
RS232 port.  From the K3 via the ACC port to the KPA500 AUX port.  The K3, P3
and KPA all talk to each other like they should.

Has anyone else run into something like this?  Any fixes?  Ideas?

Thanks.

Main ant vs. aux/other ant ant is saved separately by band and which RX,
which might cause one the sub RX to seem off as that state is only
displayed after BSET (hold on A/B button). Also true of ATT/PRE. This is
also true of the NB and NR state and selection. If those are set to a
hard quieting, the RX might seem off.

[Elecraft] Speaker staying on

2012-03-04 Thread Paul Ormandy ZL4PW
Hi all,

The K3 has developed a curious fault since switching off yesterday, i.e the
speaker stays on even
with phones plugged into the front socket.

Has not done this before and was working normally when it was switched off last
evening.

I simply turned it on this morning and encountered this unexpected result.
Unplugging and plugging
in the phones and re-booting the power made no difference.

Any ideas?

Cheers,

Paul

[Elecraft] K3: verifying IF output

I'm wondering if anyone could advise on the best way to verify that the
K3's IF output is present and working properly. I have connected an LP-PAN

Re: [Elecraft] K3: verifying IF output

2012-03-04 Thread Matt Murphy
Thanks to Iain and the others who responded off the reflector. I plugged
in the K3's IF output to the second rig's sub RX input and sure enough
heard the same signals. When the Sub-RX was set to 8.215 MHz it appeared
that there was about a -1.3 KHz difference between the VFO position that
would tune in the signal on the K3 vs via the IF. I imagine this is normal
(someone please let me know if it's not).

So it appears that I have properly functioning IF output. I have gone
through various troubleshooting approaches with the LP Pan (jumpers,
levels, etc.) and it still does not appear to be working -- only noise
shows up. I have a softrock which works fine w/ both sound cards. I think
I'm approaching the end of the troubleshooting I can do (I don't have a
sufficient oscilloscope to test the LP-PAN's oscillator), so if anyone has
any suggestions for things to try at this point I'd appreciate the advice.

Thanks again!

Re: [Elecraft] K3 feature request - auto-changing tuning rate

2012-03-04 Thread Greg
Greetings -- This is probably well known to mose but for those who may be
interested in changing frequencies/modes within a band...What I do is assign
each band to a button 160-10 -- buttons 1 thru 9. (6 meters on 0). Then
when I am on a given band, I use the DVR/memory buttons to save additional
frequencies -- a bit like band stacking registers but I have to push two
buttons instead of one (MV, and the DVR memory key). I use memory 1 for
a favorite frequency on cw, memory 2 for the PSK31 frequency on the given
band (also saving mode), memory 3 for rtty (also saving mode), and memory 4
for a favorite frequency in the phone band. I'm never too far away from
operating where I want to be. (If you wish, you can also save VFO A
frequency significantly far away from VFO B frequency and use a/b to move
from one end of a sub band to the other, also) Of course you can also input
a frequency using the numeric buttons which is fairly quick also. 73 de

To go from CW to SSB requires no knob spinning at all,
Just set two of the memory buttons, one for each mode,
and they are band dependent so each band has its own
settings. That way it changes modes, filters, freq etc all
in one push of the button.
Operates somewhat like band stacking, if you want more
setting per band just use the other Mem buttons.

[Elecraft] KX3 manual, CAT control, I-Q, and so forth

2012-03-04 Thread Tony Estep
Unless there's an unseen gotcha, it appears that one could plug the
I-Q into a stereo sound card, connect to your PC via CAT, and have a
complete SDR and/or Panadaptor display without any headaches. This is
possible with the K3 only by inserting something like a Softrock or
LP-Pan between the IF out and the soundcard in, but it looks as if
anybody who has such a setup going now could just plug the KX3 right
in, make an adjustment to the IF offset in the SDR program, and be
good to go. This is exactly what I've been hoping for since the early
discussions of the KX3. Even though I know it's not yet the middle of
March, I am watching out the window for the UPS guy.

[Elecraft] VFO coarse, RIT, etc.

2012-03-04 Thread Tony Estep
BTW thanks to those who pointed out the fast-tune features of the RIT
knob. I would have used this clever scheme many times, and from now on
I'll know to use it. For example, just last night in the ARRL-DX
Phone, there were guys transmitting on 7050 and listening 7250. With
this little trick plus the band-stack registers, you could easily get
both VFOs set in seconds.

Just goes to show ya, no matter how much you think you know, there's
some bit of info that you'd love to have that is missing. For those
who haven't tried it, check it out (look in the manual under VFO CRS
in the Config menu). It's neat.

Re: [Elecraft] KB1VBF Re: [K2] Hi Current...still

2012-03-04 Thread Brian Denley
Don Gary:
I started checking the voltages you mentioned below and the problem showed
up rather quickly:

The D9 anode volatge was 3.33 volts

nearest side of R66 measured 3.32 volts
other end of R66: 1.14 volts (R66 does
measure 2.7K)

I didn't seem to get much of anything on J7 pin 10. (is this the same as P1
pin 11 on the bottom of the RF board?)

Is my next step to resolder R66 and then move back to the control board from
there or is that much of a drop expected?
Or should the 3.4 volts roughly hold up all the way to the MCU?

Thanks

 Brian,

The KDSP2 is not likely the cause of the problem.

Your 3.53 volts on D9 is within the range of sanity for 12 to9 15 watts
 output.
The fact that the K2 display indicates P 1.0 says that voltage is not
making it back to the MCU - or that the MCU has a damaged input at pin 2.

The voltage at the cathode of D9 should be carried through R66 (check
both ends), and from there go to the connector J7 pin 10. From that
point, it will go to Control Board P2 pin 12, and then to CB P4 pin 10 -
then on to CB R12 and finally to CB U6 pin 2.

Check all those places for good soldering, and then check to see if the
DC voltage during a TUNE at the RF Board D9 cathode equals the DC
voltage at Control Board U6 pin 2. If it does, then CB U6 has a damaged
input pin. If the voltages between D9 cathode and CB U6 pin 2 are
substantially different, then there is a bad connection somewhere in the
 path between those two points.

It is not unusual for a bad solder connection to take some time to cause
problems - it will conduct just fine due to the mechanical connection
until oxidation creates additional resistance in the path and thus a
 failure.

If solder connection oxidation is not the problem, then the MCU IC could
have been damaged by static during assembly. Such damage may not be
immediate, but will drastically reduce the life of integrated circuits.

roughly 20 watts comes out no matter what I set the power to, and the
HI CUR warning is always there with P 1.0 power indicated.

Do I check the MCU next? Is that on the Control Board? Could the
KDSP2 board be causing a problem?

 Don't connect a KAT2, KAT100, or KPA100 until the power control
problem is fixed, since any of those can have damage that affects the
 power control.

Damage to D9 on the RF board or to the VRFDET input pin 2 of the
18C452 MCU can cause a loss of power control too. If OK, there should
be up to about 4VDC at the cathode of D9 when transmitting at full
 power (14-15 watts).

 Try all bands.

Make sure no relays have a soldering iron burn.

Check the t-r switch has no reversed diodes or Q2 is reversed. The
pictorial in the back of the manual shows which way these parts go.

An open RFC6 will cause self oscillation. This part is under Q6 on
the bottom of the RF board.

Check all parts are correct in the Q5-Q8 area.

Check D9's cathode has about 4VDC at 14-15w if the rig will
 produce that power level.

Check the BNC connector does not have a broken ground pin. I have
 seen that before.

[Elecraft] PSK Power Output

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Reports for March 4th 5th, 2012

2012-03-04 Thread kevinr
Good Evening,
Thanks to Dale, WC7S, and Brian, K0DTJ, the nets were run very
well. It was fun to sit and listen. Plus I found out what it is like to
get the net control's attention :) As I have found dropping my hail
sign at the lull works best.
Dale started the twenty meter net and then passed it to Brian.
Conditions were not too bad but I cannot yet compare because of my sky
burner antenna. Tomorrow I will try getting the Northern leg around a
few trees so I can raise it to 70 feet.
Brian ran the forty meter net and was very loud to me. Again this
it because of my lowered antenna. Normally he is right on the edge of
copyability on twenty meters but good on forty. Today he was good on
twenty but great on forty. Once again I took notes and listened to how
he ran things. One day I may learn how to do it :)

Thank you both for a very good time. Thank you Dale for volunteering
first and working with the others to pull in a few more. Thank you
Brian for running the net and letting me hear a few different
perspectives on the country. It is fun to test propagation and see how
the others are doing.

For some reason Ken, W0CZ, was weaker than normal but I expect that is
because my antenna is not high enough for him. I did not hear from any
others in the Midwest so I will work on it tomorrow and be ready for the
nets by next Sunday.

On to the lists =

20 meter net check-ins

WC7S - Dale - 579 - NCS
K0DTJ - Brian
W8OV - Dave - 569
K6PJV - Dale - 339
K6MGO - Bill - not heard here
KD5ONS - Kevin - 589
K4JPN - Steve - 559
W0CZ - Ken - 589
N0TA - John - 589

WC7S - Dale - 569
W8OV - Dave - 559
N0TA - John - 569
KD5ONS - Kevin - 599
W0CZ - Ken - 569

Thanks for the help guys. I think I will ask again soon so we can get
more net control operators.

Until next week,

Another tuning thought: I'm very happy with my K3 weighted spinner knobs
from N8BX. The heavy main tuning knob really does let you spin the knob in
the old fashioned way. The sub RX knob also can be spun, though I'm not
quite as happy with that as with the main tuning knob because it is slightly
oversized and can cause your fingers to hit the RIT knob by mistake. Not
cheap, but a real improvement IMHO.

Re: [Elecraft] PSK Power Output

2012-03-04 Thread Richard Ferch
Mark,

If adjusting the TX control on the SignaLink affects the K3's output
power, then it is likely that you have the audio drive set incorrectly
for the K3.

Set the K3's PWR control to the desired output power (40W; don't go
above 50W or so in PSK modes). Put the K3's meter in ALC mode and while
transmitting, adjust the audio drive (SignaLink TX control and/or the
K3's Line In level control) until you see 4 bars fully on and the 5th
bar flickering on the K3's ALC meter display.

Yes, this is contrary to the way you would adjust most other
transmitters; that's because the K3's ALC and ALC metering work
differently than other transmitters. The first four bars on the ALC
meter are like a VU meter, and actual ALC doesn't start until the 5th
bar. If the audio drive is insufficient to reach the required level (4
bars), the K3 will slowly increase its internal gain until the requested
power level is reached, causing the power creep you have observed. With
sufficient audio drive, the power output should start out at the
requested level and stay there.

Re: [Elecraft] Tuning Rate

2012-03-04 Thread Bob K6UJ
Andy,
I know what you mean, the VFO B knob spinning enhancement is a real improvement.
I dont want to help resurrect the K3 spinner knob discussion with my response,
this subject was discussed
at length on the reflector, but to summarize, the various knob options were
tried and discussed ranging from
knobs from Icom and Yaesu mobile HF rigs, very nice elegant knobs like the N8BX
knobs and buying another
K3 VFO A knob and using it on VFO B. The K3 VFO A knob is the option I have
and although it partially obscures
a small portion of the panel printing it works very well. I have both knobs
adjusted for just a hint of drag (im a spinner)
and I'm as happy as a clam at high tide.

Another tuning thought: I'm very happy with my K3 weighted spinner knobs

the old fashioned way. The sub RX knob also can be spun, though I'm not
quite as happy with that as with the main tuning knob because it is slightly
oversized and can cause your fingers to hit the RIT knob by mistake. Not
cheap, but a real improvement IMHO.

I just set the 4 quick memories for each band to 10 KHz up from the
bottom of the CW portion, middle of the CW portion, middle of the RTTY
portion and middle of the SSB portion of the band. Couple of quick button
presses and a short crank of the main tuning either way and you're there.

I never did really get used to using the RIT knob as a quick tune
feature so I shut it off.

No need to burden Wayne with adding features that can be worked around -
he's got much more on his plate than adding things to please one or two
 individuals IMO.

 Barry,

On the menu set it at 2.5 (the fastest) and it flies up the band
 with a couple quick turns
 Give it a try.

I also tune the bands, but if I am on CW and want to go up to the
SSB end of the band I dont have to spin
the VFO A knob until the cows come home, hihi.

You guys who don't like this feature - don't use it. Some of us

 Guys,

Read the K3 manual (especially the menu entries)- it is already
 included in the package.
Set the menu VFO CRS to whatever you desire (note that it is per
 mode).
Then set VFO OFS to ON and you can use the RIT knob to tune in
 the VFO
Coarse steps. Yes, it does not work if RIT or XIT is turned on,
 but
works FB when they are off.

[Elecraft] K3 for trade/sale

2012-03-04 Thread Allan Taylor
The time has come to downsize my investment in gear... I would like to
trade for a rig + cash or sell outright.
My K3 is described below:

somewhat early S/N (7xx)
has subreceiver
100W PA
general coverage BPF
6.0 kHz filter in main rx
filter sets in both main and subrx:
 2.7
 1.0
 400
 250
has the KXV3 (not -A)

most mods done

does NOT have the ATU or DVR. ( I drive an amp and am 99.9% CW)
I could throw in a Kenwood desk mike (MD80AX??)

My investment in the K3 is nearly 4K.

I will accept $3200 shipped for a cash sale or a fully setup FT1000MP or
FT1000MP MarkV and $1500 or $1350 cash
as a trade deal.

I am not interested in any ICOM or Kenwood gear.

Anyone interested?

[Elecraft] SPKR+PH fault

2012-03-04 Thread Paul Ormandy ZL4PW
Hi all,

Further to the earlier issue... i.e. my K3 is in SPKR+PH - On mode even
though the rig says it is
off.

This only occurs thru the front speaker port.

When I plugged the phones into the rear socket, the internal speaker cut out
and I have the usual
sound from the rig...

I would still like to fix the front phone socket issue as it is much more
convenient for me to
revert to Speaker from that position.

This curious behaviour occurred overnight... it was fine when switched off
yesterday and appeared at
switch-on today.. I did not access the menus for any reason.

I wonder if a firmware re-install may correct it???

Cheers,

Paul

I've been unable to download this file, Dick. Is the link broken?

I've taken a stab at some revisions to the terminal page to try to
meet these requests without requiring everyone to change their behavior.

This is a beta version. If you have difficulty with it or want to
roll back to an earlier K3 Utility revision, uninstall the beta K3

Direct constructive feedback on these changes is solicited, to

 ftp://ftp.elecraft.com/tmp/K3/KUTIL/K3_Utility_Setup_1_12_3_3.exe

Configurable idle time out delay, and fonts.

Bracketed control strings embedded in Message Memories to control
 transmission.

Details are in the revised Terminal Help page in K3 Utility Help.

Added Terminal page options dialog, with an idle timeout
 milliseconds text box.

RTTY/PSK31 diddle will stay on for that period after all characters
have been transmitted unless you click the Stop button at the top of
the dialog, or press CTRL-T to toggle transmit to off, or press the
ESC key, or have played a message memory with [TXOFF] in it.

Added special bracketed strings to message memories:

[CRLF] and [NL] are replaced by the RTTY or ASCII CR/LF or NL character.

[TXON] turns the transmitter on when the message is played.

[TXOFF] overrides the idle timeout delay, so that diddle is stopped
when the output buffer next becomes empty.

Some users have asked that the transmitter not be turned off
immediately after all characters have been sent.
Some users have asked that the transmitter be turned on when a message
 memory is recalled or played.
Some users have asked that the transmitter be turned off immediately
 after the message buffer empties.
