[Elecraft] K2 Finals - Chronic Blow-Outs
This K2 was a bought from someone on the internet as a working unit etc. Once received, it blew the finals in about 2 - 3 hours of QSO time. I really like the K2 but it looks it's mine to solve. I've done a lot of radoi building and RF troubleshooting down through the years, and have looked for all the usual suspects of shorts, debris shaken loose during shipment etc. BTW: The condition of the board and mounting hardware for the finals and PA bias transistors STRONGLY indicates that they've been changed more than a few times *before* the rig reached me . . . so , in all probability, I was probably the only one surprised by it's sudden demise. Here's what I am seeing: It has fried three sets of finals in two weeks - I changed them per the manual twice ( am a glutton for punishment ) and VERY carefully re-checked my work and metered for shorts each time. After = 2 to 3 hours of 'normal' operation each time, the finals blew. This happened on three separate bands with an SWR of 1.2:1 (on average) at 10 Watts indicated both on my SWR/power meter and the K2 digital display. I did not notice a current warning during the last two failures and now am not certain whether I did during the first failure. Most recently: - I had finished the most recent ragchew then switched to calling CQ using a Vibroplex (as always) and heard a small 'crack' of a transistor case rupturing when immediately the 3 Amp automotive fuse in my power cord blew. The smell told me where to look. This is a relatively simple circuit and it seems to me that there is not a lot to go wrong: T4 with bad insulation ? Something in the common parts of the LGP/Band switching but not band specific? I am mystified why it would run flawlessly for a few hours of CW then let the smoke out. Anybody have ideas? I have a ton of Elecraft accessory boards on the way and that's a lot of assessories for a radio that drops dead continuously. Re: [Elecraft] K2 Finals - Chronic Blow-Outs
Ray, You apparently have some problem that is destroying your K2 PA transistors. What I am saying is that the dead PA transistors is the symptom but not the cause of failure. When the PA transistors are removed, measure the voltage at the solder pad for the PA transistor base during a TUNE. If it is greater than 0.63 volts, replace Q11 and Q13. You might just replace Q11 and Q13 just because. When you replace the PA transistors, do you use the Elecraft K2PAKIT or do you purchase the transistors from another source. The Elecraft K2PAKIT has transistors that are matched, and that is an important parameter. Do you have the KAT2, KPA100, or KAT100 installed? If so, check the wattmeter diodes. Those diodes often become damaged by nearby lightning (do not leave the antenna connected when not operating), If those diodes are damaged, the K2 will go to uncontrolled maximum power output, and the usual result is that the base K2 PA transistors are overloaded and will sacrifice themselves. 73, Don W3FPR On 10/13/2012 7:29 AM, w7asa wrote: This K2 was a bought from someone on the internet as a working unit etc. Once received, it blew the finals in about 2 - 3 hours of QSO time. Re: [Elecraft] K2 Finals - Chronic Blow-Outs
What is the high current alarm set at? Are there the correct number of turns on T4? (check against the illustration in the assembly manual) Perhaps there is a problem with the bias system. Transistors Q11 and Q13 should probably be changed as well as the finals if there is a problem with the PA stage. You did not say what the set serial number is. I am not sure if that might make a difference with troubleshooting help, but it could. - Jim, KL7CC On 10/13/2012 3:29 AM, w7asa wrote: This K2 was a bought from someone on the internet as a working unit etc. Once received, it blew the finals in about 2 - 3 hours of QSO time. Re: [Elecraft] Down or Up conversions designs
For a real down conversion radio, consider my old Hallicrafters SX-99. Everything is converted to a 455KHz IF which includes a crystal filter (I think one poll). It really doesn't do very well on image rejection. :-) I had a pristine HQ150 (just finished restoration) and while listening to SW broadcast in 15 MHz band I heard a ham station. I found him on 20 and told him I heard his spur up there. He said he would check it out. While continuing to listen in that SW band, I heard a few other hams in there. I went Hmmm ... did the math ... I tried to find the other ham whom I told had the spur ... he may still be looking for it. 73, Mike WA5POK __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] K2 Finals - Chronic Blow-Outs
Ray, Even though you have changed Q11 and Q13, do check the voltage at the base of Q7 or Q8 both during receive and transmit. It should be zero during receive and close to 0.6 during transmit. If that voltage is something different, you will need to look for the reason before installing (and blowing) another set of PA transistors. Thanks for the good words on the KSB2 option. You can always tell one of my KSB2 builds at a glance from the top. I ground the filter crystals near the bottom of the crystal cans instead of on the top. 73, Don W3FPR On 10/13/2012 9:08 AM, w7asa wrote: Man! You guys are really encouraging-and FAST! [Elecraft] KX3 - Another Thanks
My KXPD3 and KXBC3 arrived yesterday. Installation was quick and painless. I did have one moment of confusion with the changes for the KXBC3 install, but I figured that out. I did change out to the firm spring on the paddle after playing around with it for a bit. Of course, I'm not the speed-demon a lot of you are. :) I wanted to thank the following who packaged my equipment: Amanda Stephanie Susan Austin Thanks to Eric (who I met in Huntsville) and Wayne once again for their products and for their conscientious effort to make the best products in the amateur market. This past Monday at our local club meeting, I gave a show-and-tell presentation of my KX3. I don't know if I left with any solid converts, but most were quite impressed. 73, Joel - W4JBB __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] K3 - receive audio when using the ANF
I use my K3 mostly for SSB rag chew, for that reason I use the ANF (automatic notch filter) often. The ANF does eliminate interfering hetrodynes and carriers very well, however, it introduces a garbling effect to the SSB received audio. It is tolerable, but surely causes a noticeable and disappointing receive audio quality reduction. I have other rigs with ANF and even a couple of old ANF boxes - all of which do a good job eliminating the interfering signals - generally as well as the K3's ANF. However, only the K3 introduces artifacts or garbling to the receive audio. I have been told by Elecraft, They (other manufacturers) are no doubt using a different algorithm. Lyle has said he will look into this when he gets a chance. Not being able to leave the ANF engaged all of the time, as I do with other rigs, has reduced the pleasure of using my K3. In the interim of Lyle looking into this, has anyone found settings that workaround this problem? Re: [Elecraft] K3EXREF install in K3 build?
If the K3EXREF is left unconnected to an external frequency reference, it should not affect any calibrations. If it is connected to a ref oscillator, it would affect your reference freq calibration - in that you wouldn't really need to do it at all. I would go without it until you get the basic radio together, just the same. Should not isn't that same as won't. I was one of the Field Testers for the ref board, and I went through the process both ways: as a new build, and again as an add-on. Neither of them was affected by the presence of the ref board. Others may have differing opinions. 73, matt W6NIA On Sat, 13 Oct 2012 10:56:05 -0700 (PDT), you wrote: I'm building my second K3 with the K3EXREF option and I wonder if anyone can tell me if it would be a problem to install the K3EXREF during initial construction, at the same time as the KREF3. [Elecraft] K3 upgrade question
As indicated in previous email on this topic, I am in the process of moving my second receiver, filters, autotuner, high temp osc and general band mod from one K3 ser 1391 to another 1526 this weekend. There are a number of reasons including issues where the K3 1391 has a louder background noise level, issues with operating in digital modes, etc. I do intend to take care of those issues eventually and based on off line discussions with Dick he mentioned that one of the issues related to digital mode problems could be my I/O board related. I just upgraded K3 1526 to include the REMIOUPGD mod and a new 1.8 kHz filter and it works super great. Everything works as it should. My idea is to use the older fine working order I/O board from 1526 and place it in 1391 to see if digital mode issues are fixed. If that older troubled unit has already been modified with the REMIOUPGD I was curious if the older I/O board will work or would potentially cause any issues. Sorry for the long background on this I just wanted to check before surgery begins and augmentation is executed. Well going to try again below is the problem I am having. I was attempting to run the transmit bias test and all that is happening is both for CW and SSB when I press XMIT on the LCD I get a reading of .04A ranging up to .09A and Q6 below that. The instructions say this test is to take between 3-10 sec my test was into 1.5 minutes. The LCD just continued to role between .04A and .09A. I tried SSB and the same thing happend just the numbers were from .08A-.18A again with Q6 below the reading. I was not getting an error message and there was nothing on the BNC connector and I did unlock the TX Bias menu. Mike, The way I read the manual, you are doing it right, and getting the correct results - no error messages. Note that those menu parameters are not manually adjustable, you just walk through the steps indicated in the manual, and it sounds like you have done that. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Question
The information on calibration of filter is in the owner's manual. The version I have, it is on page 32 under the heading CALIBRATION. It clearly states that if the filter and KX3 were ordered and shipped at the same time, the filter calibration is not needed. Elecraft retains configuration files for each KX3 it ships which includes calibration data for the filter. I know this because I made a very dumb error in building my kit and Elecraft support worked me through the troubleshooting process and the last try before sending back fixed it. One of the troubleshooting steps was to do a REINIT which sets all configuration and calibration data back to factory default. Once I notified Vic in support that my problem was solved and I was going to do the filter calibration, he came back immediately and said Stop Don't! and my S/N configuration file was attached to the email. He told me just to upload the config file. I uploaded it and my KX3 absolutely lit up. It was an amazing moment and this radio has been amazing ever since. If you can't find the statement on no need to do filter calibration in the manual, just repost and I'll find it in the current version manual. 73 John W4DX On Sat, Oct 13, 2012 at 8:50 PM, Phil Hystad phys...@mac.com wrote: OK but I just looked in the assembly manual and the user guide and I did not see anything about NOT doing the configuration/calibration of the filter. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Question
OK, maybe I am misunderstanding something or mis-stating this question of calibration/configuration. First, my page 32 in my owner's manual DOES NOT have a section called CALIBRATION. That is the top of page 31. And, right under that there is this statement: Most calibration steps are performed at the factory for both kit and assembled KX3s. There is one exception: If you install a KXFL3 roofing filter during the KX3 kit assembly, or install one in a factory assembled KX3 after initial purchase, you'll need to perform the Receive Sideband calibration step (pg. 32). So, is this what you are referring to because it seems to suggest that there still is a calibration procedure associated with the KXFL3. Thanks for any additional help and clarity you can provide. By the way, my owner's manual is Revision B4, June 1, 2012 which is the same as currently available as the latest on the Elecraft web site. 73, phil, K7PEH On Oct 13, 2012, at 6:14 PM, John Strandberg w...@arrl.net wrote: The information on calibration of filter is in the owner's manual. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Question
Page 31 of the owner's manual states that if you install a KXFL3 during kit assembly, you need to run the receive sideband calibration on page 32. I don't think this was done at the factory, as my cal values were quite a bit different from the default values in the rig. Re: [Elecraft] K3 headphone audio
... Is there any way to make the audio level using speakers to be at compatible levels with headphones? I've been whining about this since 'day one'. I've fiddled with the menu setting to no avail. When the audio gain is set at 9:00 to accomodate headphones (Sony MDRV-6s), I must turn the level up to 10 for either internal or external speakers, and even then it's barely adequate. (My hearing is good.) I've always thought that the spkr amp didn't have enough gain. I'd be willing to change a feedback resistor to increase it. It's my only remaining 'complaint' with the K3. [Elecraft] K3 headphone vs speaker level
Is this issue perhaps only related to headphones plugged into the front panel PHONES jack? I use a Heil headset ... plugged into the rear jack/s ... and never have to adjust the volume control. The headset is live all the time and all I do is place it on my head when I want to use headphones. MONitor level isn't an issue, either. I suspect I'm missing somethig here ... :-) 73! [Elecraft] KX3 Question
Hello Mike, Don is correct. The refinement excercise is interesting and educational. I used spectrogram in the alignmnent of K2 filters. I also deliberately chose the kit version KX3 in order to learn more about the architecture of the radio. The required assembly of kx3 is well lower than K2. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Question
Guys, I initiated this series of e-mails on this topic. I had a simple question about an LED light I could see on the inside of the KX3. I mentioned I was about to do the calibration of the filter and someone told me that I did not have to do this. Others joined in and said that it was true that this step was not needed if I ordered the KXFL3 at the same time as the KX3. And, others said that this was mentioned in the documentation. I could not find that statement. Even though someone pointed me to the very page and the very paragraph, I could not find any statement that said that if I ordered my KXFL3 with my KX3 that I did not have to do any calibration. Unfortunately, I will need to wait until Monday to call up Elecraft and talk to someone because the more e-mails I see on this question, the more confusing and conflicting the information becomes. For example, on page 29 under CONFIGURATION section the bullet item that is associated with the KXFL3 says this: You must then perform the Receive Sideband calibration procedure (pg. 32). No where that I can find is there a statement that says this does not need to be done. Someone did point me to the Calibration section but it did not say anything to contradict the quoted statement above. My assumption is that according to the writing of this owner manual, all who have the KXFL3 Roofing Filter Module are expected to perform this calibration procedure. So, my KX3 work is on hold until Monday.
