Re: [Elecraft] K3 Firmware 4.58 - Problem using K144XV

2012-11-17 Thread Guy Olinger K2AV
Changes to a version identified to any level of testing always causes the
version number to increment. Unless they blow it and just plain forget.
:>) They're up to at least 4.60. Versions in field testing are usually
distributed by ad hoc lists and only show up in the directories when deemed
ready for beta. Wayne works on his own situational set of rules about how
and when that happens.

Re: [Elecraft] Fully automatic operation of the K3 and KAT500 during TUNE mode?

2012-11-17 Thread Gary Gregory
After you set your preferred antennas to the bands you want etc...do tune
on say CW portion, then a couple of times through the SSB portions to
create 'store point in the kat500 memory bins'

>From this point on, no manual initiation of tuning is needed.

When the KAT500 reaches the threshold you set, it will flash to alert you
to press the tune button (or press a straight key) and you can also set a
Bypass threshold so that the kat500 will go into bypass when not needed.

I use this setup daily and no issues here.

I run the kat500 in AUTO all the time.

Gary

to do a manual tune and release it when the tuner stops tuning,
although I don't see the problem with two holds of the tune button.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2012-11-17 Thread kevinr
Good Evening,
It has been very foggy this week. It is hard to tell the time of
day. If you walk too fast you get pretty wet :) Under the trees there
is a steady dripping which soaks into the fir needles very well. I saw
one elk disappear into the mist, a grouse who left a wake, and a deer
who was nipping the undergrowth here and there as she walked across my
view. The coyotes are very active and very noisy. The owls enjoy the
fog each night. I can hear them as I try to fall asleep.

Propagation was up and down this week effected by the solar storm
last weekend. The SSB contest will keep the ionosphere charged so we
can enjoy good copy.

Please join us tomorrow afternoon and evening.

Re: [Elecraft] K3/0 to K3/100 RemoteRig transmit audio problem

2012-11-17 Thread Craig - AE6RR
Thanks to all that replied off list with suggestions. The problem is fixed.
It was actually two problems. The first and most severe was RF feedback
into the transmit audio. I put a ferrite on the mic cable from the Radio
RRC box to the K3 and that helped some, but reducing power to about 15 W
cured it. It also disappeared when I tested with a dummy load. Then I need
to adjust the codec gain values on the Radio RRC. The audio now sounds
great.

I am not sure if I had RF pickup in the Control RRC or the Radio RRC or
both. I am going to deploy the system to the remote site and see how it
works there with an antenna that is farther removed than my stealth antenna
at home (that's why I need a remote site). I will also be using an amp at
the remote site.

The supplied mic cables in the cable kits are made with a couple of feet of
CAT-6 Ethernet cable and a mic and PTT cable spiced on the end. I am
thinking about making a new one for the radio end with shielded CAT-6 and
see if that helps. The RJ-45s on the RRC boxes are the shielded types so I
will get a grounded shield on that end. The next question will be if I
should connect the CAT-6 shield to the mic and PTT shields at the splice
point. I may need to experiment with that. I also have a supply of
ferrites (bit ones) to play with.

Subject: [Elecraft] K3/0 to K3/100 RemoteRig transmit audio problem

I am using a K3/0 and a K3/100 with the RemoteRig boxes. I have the
standard versions as sold at HRO not the ones with the special microphone
jumper module. I jumpered the mic connections as shown in the RemoteRig
manual on page 193 and I have horrible digital noise on my transmit audio
even with a microphone plugged directly into the control RemoteRig box. The
PTT does work OK.

Any ideas on this one?

[Elecraft] Fwd: PT0S update

2012-11-17 Thread Mike Harris
For info.

Mike VP8NO

Winds have further increased during the later afternoon and evening,
During high tide the waves were crashing over the south perimeter rocks,
flooding the area around vertical No 2 (our 80 to 10 antenna for Station
2). One of the waves has ripped off the coax cable from the antenna
coupler, breaking in tow a large male N connector, as well as causing
some other damage. We had to wait until low tide to fix it but it is
back in operation as of 1600 Z. Waves also took out our new 10 m
antenna. It is also fixed now. The combination of swells and high waves
makes a pretty sight around the rocks, with lots of white water all
around, but it makes working on the antennas (which are naturally close
to the water) very difficult. Another challenge we face is noise (the
acoustic kind, this time). The huge waves crashing against the rocks
create a constant noise, even the rocks under us are tremble at times.
There is also noise from the various activities by the Navy, and just
simply noise from being so cramped together. On the other hand, the
Brazilian Navy guys have been very friendly, accommodating and helpful.
Without their support this operation would not be possible.

We are also experiencing failures with our K3 radios. We brought four
K3-s and had problems with three of them so far. We have been able to
repair two of the problems, but the third one seems to need a firmware
download, which is not possible from here.

The pile-ups are large and we are trying hard to hear the callers but it
is proving to be very difficult. We are now spending more time on 30 and
12 meters, but there the narrow band makes our pile-ups even more
troublesome.

Low Bands:

160: Excellent conditions during the early part of the night, but later,
from around 0300Z, we had increasing lightning QRN. Worked UA0 but still
no sign of JA-s.

80: We continue working JA-s on 80 early in the morning.

40: Was excellent the short time we spent working it.

Which Rigol model spectrum analyzer do you use and are you happy with it?

The AM filter (6 kHz BW) is still a much better choice for AM and ESSB
receive, because it provides better close-in dynamic range. But it
turns out that the difference between the two filters is fairly minor

Re: [Elecraft] Way off topic, but fun

2012-11-17 Thread Ken Nicely
Well, I guess it is new to me. I did not know it was used so long ago.

Why not 8 tonesbecause I have trouble decoding 2 in my head.

I hope everyone enjoyed the diversion. I figured that this group, being a
good number of hard core CW operators, would appreciate it. I initially
thought of two tones because I was thinking about how you could squeeze a
little more speed out of CW by using two dots with different tones instead
of a dot and a dash. I admit it is hard to get your brain to recognize it,
but after you listen to it for a while it gets easier.

I will close the topic before Eric closes it for me.

[Elecraft] K3 ESSB transmit now allowed with the FM filter (firmware rev 4.60)

2012-11-17 Thread Wayne Burdick
I've modified the K3 software to allow use of the FM filter for ESSB
transmit. (The current beta release, 4.58, already allows AM transmit
with the FM filter.)

The AM filter (6 kHz BW) is still a much better choice for AM and ESSB
receive, because it provides better close-in dynamic range. But it
turns out that the difference between the two filters is fairly minor
in transmit. I have a new Rigol spectrum analyzer which made it easy
to do a detailed survey at both narrow and wide spacings.

If you're interested in testing the new field-test release (4.60),
please email me directly.

Re: [Elecraft] {K3} Split when changing bands?

2012-11-17 Thread Gary K9GS
Hello Pete!

Yep...the culprit is the logging program but not just N1MMLogger32
does the same thing. I posted to the Logger32 reflector and the program
author told me that when changing bands, Logger32 send a macro string
similar to this: FR0;FAfrequency;MDmode

The FR0 command is what resets the split to off. I'm not really
familiar with macros but I think the fix is going to involve sending an
FA command instead of FR.

Anyone care to comment?

[Elecraft] Split Operation Update

2012-11-17 Thread Peter Chamalian
I've confirmed the K3 operates as advertised when you change bands using the
Band up/down button. Changing bands from N1MM resets the split.

I've posted a query on the N1MM reflector and asked for a software
modification which I rather suspect could impact any radio unless the code
only resets the K3.

[Elecraft] K3 Twins with LP-Pan

2012-11-17 Thread Bob Baker
Has anyone set up  their remote system with LP-Pan running on a PC at the
remote site?

How can the serial control path be configured so that the RemoteRig control
data and LP-Pan share the serial port on the K3?  LP-Bridge is normally used
to accommodate other CAT control programs residing on the same PC, but I don't
see a feature allowing control by a physical COM port.  Furthermore, LP-Bridge
filters the CAT data somehow, which may cause control problems.

Why only two tones? If we use an 8-tones "multi-FSK", we can get more

meant to be human-readable:

This is what inspired the alien musical language in the movie "Close Encounters

[Elecraft] [All] K9YC's RFI Tutorial Bears Fruit

2012-11-17 Thread Al Lorona
Now and then I have used Jim K9YC's "A Ham's Guide to RFI, Ferrites, Baluns,
and
Audio Interfacing" as a reference but very recently I finally read the whole
thing straight through, and it finally dawned on me that Jim advocates putting
a
common-mode choke right at the feedpoint of the antenna. The reason he gives is
that most 'balanced' antennas are not in perfect balance due to the antenna's
surroundings, and this imbalance makes the feedline pick up more noise. Much of
his paper consists of measured data of many kinds of chokes, but I built what
seemed the simplest effective choke -- 15 turns of solid THHN electrical wire
bifilar wound on a #31 toroid-- and put it near the feedpoint of my dipole.

I say 'near' because for mechanical reasons the closest I could put the choke
was about 12 transmission line feet from the feedpoint. I use all-homebrew 500
ohm open-wire line.

I finally got the antenna up Saturday and have been tuning around the low
bands
and it appears that my noise floor has indeed dropped. Whereas in this noisy
location I have had the REF LVL of the P3 set to -114 dBm on 40 meters for some
time, I now have to drop the REF LVL to -118 dBm to move the noise floor to the
same location on the bottom of the display. There is a similar outcome on 80
meters. But man, I just picked up another half S-unit of noise floor last
weekend.

This K9YC is a smart man. Another change I've made since reading his entire
paper was replacing my 'shielded' speaker cables (which nonetheless were
always
bothered with RF buzz whenever I transmitted on 40) with simple unshielded
twisted pair, and it looks like my buzz problem is pretty much gone.

Two changes which have improved the station by a lot. Thanks, Jim.

Re: [Elecraft] {K3} Split when changing bands?

2012-11-17 Thread Peter Chamalian
This is funny because I just posted the same thing. However, all I do is
change bands (using N1MM) and without doing anything else, go back to the
original band and the K3 is no longer in split mode.

I thought I understood the manual to say the K3 remembers the split mode and
frequency per band so I don't quite understand why clicking on a spot on say
20 then going back to the original band the split setup should change.

OK...I got this figured out.

I have SPLT SV set to "on" in the CONFIG/TECH MD menu.

As long as I change bands with the K3 and NOT by clicking on a spot in the
logging software, the K3 operates like it's supposed toNOT turning off
split and remembering the split setting by band.

However, if I change bands by clicking on a spot in the logging software the
logging software turns off the split when it changes bands. Thanks to Joe
W4TV for suggesting I check this.

I confirmed this with both Logger32 and N1MM.

I do not believe there is a way to defeat this with either logging program,
unfortunately. At least for day-to-day operating with Logger32 that would
be nice to be able to select the split behavior.

Thanks for all the responses on and off the reflector.

[Elecraft] Fully automatic operation of the K3 and KAT500 during TUNE mode?

2012-11-17 Thread AC6JA
Just wondering if the K3 and KAT500 are capable of fully automatic TUNE
operation?
What I mean is, is there any way you can just push the TUNE button on the
K3 (or the KAT500 for that matter), have the K3 transmit a carrier (25-30w),
have the KAT500 tune the antenna, and then have the K3 AUTOMATICALLY go
back into receive mode?
I believe the LDG tuners work this way.
I still have to manually initiate the TUNE sequence at the K3 and then
manually end the TUNE cycle by pushing TUNE again to get the K3 back into
receive mode.
Or am I doing it wrong? Let me know.
Other than that, I'm very happy with the tuner and it works great!

[Elecraft] Split Operation

2012-11-17 Thread Peter Chamalian
If I'm reading the manual correctly, when I have the config setting SPLT SV
set to YES, the K3 should save the split, XIT and RIT information on each
band. But, with this value set to YES, and I am split on say 30 meters then
change to 20 meters and go back to 30, the sub receiver is still at the
frequency it was set for but the K3 is no longer in split mode so I have to
press split again to put it into split mode.

This is particularly annoying if I happen to be chasing a DXpedition on one
band, change bands to another to work something then go back to the previous
band and transmit because I'm not split!

Is this a bug or am I missing something else that needs to be set? I would
like the K3 to remain in split mode as well as keep the vfo A and B values.

2012-11-17 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
This O.T.'s brain, used to hearing several signals at once in the rx
passband, tries to decode each frequency simultaneously as a separate
signal. So one signal is sending only dits and the other is sending only
dashes!

I'd not want to train my gray matter to consider two different requencies as
one signal.

It is slightly reminiscent of the "yooping" chirp some of our old one-tube
transmitters produced though, Hi!

According to the Mayans the date you refer to in our calendar system was the
end of one calendar period and the beginning of another for them. The Mayans
believed the world would never end.

So, bad news, you will have to pay your taxes next year after all!

Tap 1 to select SSB -CW (default) or SSB +CW (allows CW in SSB modes). **

Every time I Tap 1, I got N/A !!!

Sending CW from SSB mode would be a nice feature!!

Thanks' for information..

etc.

hope it helps
