All,

Further to my email below I've now written a page on my website and have
included a zip file with the script for people to have a look at. No
warranty or guarantee can be offered for the use of the software, nor
any responsibility for anything going wrong. I've not thoroughly tested
the script, though I've not had any problems on my system.

I'd be interested in comments on the functionality and usefulness of it.

All,

I only caught this thread partway through, and the recent Digest emails
have been quite lengthy so I don't even know who was asking originally.
However I do have my own solution to this problem.

I originally wanted something to be able to fire off the DVR without using
a contest logger, currently Win-Test and the LUA scripts available. Sadly
for the local RSGB VHF contests I use another program that doesn't have
rig control. I found a program called K-Keys by KE3C which allows up to 10
macros to be defined and assigned to keyboard short-cuts.

I then found KTune by G4ILO and that got me thinking about an off-board
controller for tuning and custom macros. I came across the ShuttlePROv2
which is a video-editing tool and has a jog wheel, fast-fwd and rev
control and a number of buttons. These actions can all be assigned to
keystrokes in the driver application. However, I found that although KTune
worked well with this, K-Keys wasn't able to pick up the keystrokes.

The ShuttlePRO is definitely generating the correct keys, so I had a
problem after having spent £70 on the controller. A friend of mine
suggested I ought to write something myself using AutoIt - a windows
scripting tool. Based on an example file and a DLL someone had written for
it I managed to cobble together an application that sits in the background
and controls the K3 nicely through LP_Bridge.

I've implemented most of the macros I want to do, mode switching, amp
control and message memories as well as variable rate tuning and jog wheel
for VFO A and stepped tuning of VFOB and automatic 2kHz CW split. I am
planning on making the SSB mode change smart by reading the frequency from
the rig and setting LSB and USB depending on the answer. I also want to
make the 'split' intelligent for CW and SSB as well. I'm also thinking
about adding in a GUI to configure the macros and com port settings, but
I'm not able to promise I can do that any time soon as the program is
working for me as it stands.

I'm not a software engineer, the settings etc are all hard coded, but I
was able to generate an executable that I have in my start-up folder. I
only wrote it on Sunday 6th Jan so it's not finished but certainly working
in I guess an alpha test.

If anyone would like a look at the script I can send it to them, I've not
had chance to get it onto my website yet (www.m0pcb.co.uk) but hoping to
do that today. I am not really willing to release it as a working program
yet as it's very much a prototype at the moment.

If anyone is interested it might be best to talk off-line as I often don't
get chance to read through the daily digest emails in much detail and I
may miss things.

Re: [Elecraft] My K2 is now Transmitting 15W on 80M CW but power drops off as I go up bands

2013-01-09 Thread Don Wilhelm

Cliff,

There are two areas of the K2 transmit chain that have frequency
dependent components. The Transmit Buffer and the feedback loops from
collector to base of Q5 and Q6.

Check the soldering for the components connected to RF Board U9,
especially R94 and C150 on the bottom of the board. Also reflow the
soldering of the components around Q5 and Q6.

One other thing to check is the value and soldering of R98 on the bottom
of the board - it should be 270 ohms.

What would cause a pregressive drop off like this , PA must be ok otherwise
I wouldn't be getting 15W out on 80M .

I have adjusted to peak the output as per manual but something is obviously

Receive side seems to be working correctly, noise when antenna connected on

The K3 seems to be configured correctly. Tone volume level and keyer speed

The Bencher factory cable is wired to a 1/8 plug. The cable kit includes a

noticed that I first hear a series of continuous dashes, then continuous
dots and alternating dashes, and then nothing after the plug is fully seated
into the jack. When the paddles are touched afterward nothing is triggered.

Is something wrong with the Bencher cable plug or its adapter? The adapter
works fine when using it with a 1/8plug for headphones. Perhaps the way the

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 RFI problem

2013-01-09 Thread Jim Miller
I strongly suspect you have a common mode problem. These can be very
frequency dependent.

Read: http://audiosystemsgroup.com/RFI-Ham.pdf especially the section on
common mode chokes. There is a cookbook near the end for band specific
chokes.

For more details on the math read:
http://fermi.la.asu.edu/w9cf/articles/balun.pdf

I'd also recommend you take out the 4:1 transformer.

[Elecraft] Odd subrx problem

2013-01-09 Thread Brian Alsop

This has happened enough to raise it as an issue.

I have a SDR on the subrx IF. I operate mostly CW. The SDR is set so
that frequencies agree at zero beat on CW. A/B VFO's are linked for
normal everyday operation. I use ROCKY for everyday use and SKIMMER for
contests.

If I change mode to say SSB, the SDR/panadapter display remains proper.

However when I change the mode back to CW, the subrx's display is
displaced from where it should be. It takes an A-B ALL to bring it
back to normal.

Anybody else see this? It appears to be some sort of bug. Since it is
evident in both ROCKY and SKIMMER, I'm suspecting the K3. ROCKY is not
linked at all to the K3 and knows nothing about mode.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 RFI problem

2013-01-09 Thread Brian Alsop
Sounds like the 4:1 balun may be overheating on 12M. Chances are if
you've been doing this for a bit, it's ruined. Heat anneals the core
and changes it's electrical properties for the worse. Heat may have
cracked it.

Now whether a 4:1 balun is the thing to use is another issue.
You don't say how long your open wire line is so it is impossible to
estimate the impedance seen by the balun.

Here are the approximate antenna feedpoint impedances for a 120' double
50' up.

80M 47 -j188 SWR=17:1 4:1 balun at antenna feedpoint makes situation
worse

40M 1724 +j1869 SWR =75:1 4:1 balun at antenna helps
20M 415 + j880 SWR =45:1 4:1 balun at antenna helps
15M 186+281jSWR =13:1 4:1 balun at antenna helps
12M 1293-155j SWR =63:1 4:1 balun at antenna helps
10M 122.4-j100 SWR =4:14:1 balun at antenna helps

It is clear that 12M may be close to the worst of the lot

If one knew the electrical properties and length of the ladder line, one
can do the impedance transformations and determine just what impedances
the balun sees. One may end up with entirely different conclusions from
above. The G5RV is an example of a doublet antenna where the ladder
line length is pruned to find an acceptable match on several bands.

Re: [Elecraft] Broadcast band interference [KX3}]

2013-01-09 Thread Gary Auchard
I posted a question concerning an issue with broadcast band interference on
my KX3 and received several good replys. Here's more info on this
issue.there is a local AM broadcast station about 8 miles away but that
is not the one I'm hearing. It's sounding like a Shortwave AM broadcast
from some religious station. Using the RX SHFT as suggested by one person
replying is not a viable option. When you do that it disables the Roofing
Filter option which I need usually for copying CW signals where I'm having
the problem.

I do have the antenna tuner installed and tuned to the band where I'm
working but I'm still getting the problem. The signal does vary up and
down in strength so I'm sure it's a Shortwave signal causing the problem.

I can live with the problem most of the time but I would hope Elecraft
could provide an answer to this issue. How about it Eric or Wayne? Any
comments from your end? My KX3 is SN. 564 built by me in June of 2012.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Remote VFO tuning control

2013-01-09 Thread Charles Sanders
I've been following this thread but have not responded since my impression
of the original request was for a self-contained tuning knob that did not
require use of external software and an associated computer. I agree with
Ian's proposal that, although it is not a standalone solution, the Shuttle
Pro is a device that, in conjunction with appropriate software, offers a
lot of functionality.

I use the Shuttle Pro with my mobile contest logger (CQ/X) to control
multiple functions on the K3 in my mobile installation wherein the K3 is in
the back of the SUV and the operator is in the front passenger seat.
Details on this application of the Shuttle Pro can be found by following
the Elecraft links on the Radios page of my website (www.no5w.com).

I'm happy to discuss the details if there are questions.

Hello Oliver all,

I got # 3156.

Same remark about missing washers, thank God for the spare parts bag..
I agree on Olivia, that would be an excellent addition.
One thing I noticed also is that the battery holder holes on the back cover
were slightly off..
I could still put the screws in but they started at an angle, and it was rather
hard to get them threaded all the way.
They were oddly all off by the same amount. Maybe a problem with the case
holder while drilling..
Also, editing the CW memories with the Mac utility program doesn't always work,
as it sometimes refuses entries.
It seems like there has to be a space at the end of the line to allow it to be
saved?
Other than that, the radio is excellent! The filtering down to 50Hz is awesome.
I don't know about the microphone, I don't have one ;-)

2013-01-09 Thread David Christ
Somewhere in the back of my head is a recollection of issues surrounding
spurious signals caused by the mixing of strong signals in things like corroded
gutter joints etc. If there is a strong signal present from the AM station at
all times then the other signal varying in strength might cause his fade in and
out issue.

Can some who is a real engineer tell me if this makes sense or have I been
smoking green leafy stuff?

Re: [Elecraft] Broadcast band interference [KX3}]

2013-01-09 Thread Igor Sokolov

Gary,
Direct detection of AM signals is inherent problem with zero IF SDR. The
best solution is the use of RX SHIFT.
You can possibly use high Q filter at the input of the radio if you know the
frequency of the interfering AM station and if it is only one such a
station. But it is hardly practical solution. When RX shift is enabled you
do lose narrow roofing but 15 kHz roofing is still in place. Without roofing
filter the radio still has more then 90 db of IMD dynamic range which is
more then enough in 99.9% of cases. Think of those using Yaesu and Icom rigs
with DR of less then 80db and still winning contests.
More valuable feature which is lost with RX shift engaged is DUAL RX. Yet
Wayne promised, we will get DUAL RX with RX SHIFT in future firmware
releases.

Re: [Elecraft] Broadcast band interference [KX3}]

2013-01-09 Thread Mark
While the rusty bolt syndrome is real, what is being discussed here is likely
what is called am broadcast bleed through. This is a consequence of a direct
conversion receiver and as I understand it is second order issue in the
receivers front end, which basically makes it act as a detector to AM
signals. It can be eliminated by using the 8 kHz offset in the kx3, or by
filtering out the broadcast station before it gets to the antenna.

If what you hear is resulting from an external mix (like from a rusty bolt) you
will be able to tune away from it, since it will be on a discrete frequency,
(although it might be wide, since it could have a harmonic aspect). If it is
am bleed through it will be 'every where' since it is in effect getting into
the radios IF which is not tunable (well it is if you use the 8 kHz offset).

I'm sure not an RF or receiver designer but did find a lot of references about
this on the web. The first ham SDRs had real issues with this. The kx3 seems
to be much, much better.

[Elecraft] PSK31 on K3/100

2013-01-09 Thread Ray Coles
Being mainly confined to evening operation when the higher bands are closed
to me at this time of year, I decided to try out PSK31 on 40 and 80m. My
mentor (George G3ICO) is a very experienced CW operator who always gets much
better DX with his QRP (5W) KX3 than anything I can do with SSB and 100
watts on my K3, so I figured PSK31 could be a way to get some of that! So
far I have just used the K3 Windows monitor software and the built in K3 SDR
PSK31 feature. After a few revisions of my stored macros via the monitor I
am doing OK with several nice QSOs, even if no great DX so far. Thus
encouraged, I plan to get an external data modes box, namely the Micro Ham
Micro Keyer II. Would anyone like to comment on the relative results of K3
SDR and Monitor versus FLDIGI/ HRD software (or similar) and a Micro Keyer
II type interface? I might even try RTTY next!

Ray,

Why do you want an external interface? You can use the soundcard in your
computer or spend the money on a nice external soundcard. The line in is
already isolated.

See you in the waterfall.

If that balun had overheated and become ruined on 12m it almost
certainly would have affected other bands as well. A ruined balun is a
changed balun.

You don't say how long your open wire line is so it is impossible to
estimate the impedance seen by the balun.

Here are the approximate antenna feedpoint impedances for a 120'

80M 47 -j188 SWR=17:1 4:1 balun at antenna feedpoint makes

40M 1724 +j1869 SWR =75:1 4:1 balun at antenna helps
20M 415 + j880 SWR =45:1 4:1 balun at antenna helps

12M 1293-155jSWR =63:1 4:1 balun at antenna helps
10M 122.4-j100 SWR =4:14:1 balun at antenna helps

It is clear that 12M may be close to the worst of the lot

If one knew the electrical properties and length of the ladder line,
one can do the impedance transformations and determine just what
impedances the balun sees. One may end up with entirely different
conclusions from above. The G5RV is an example of a doublet antenna
where the ladder line length is pruned to find an acceptable match on
several bands.

[Elecraft] K3 line out

2013-01-09 Thread eric norris
Dear Jim:

Something is screwy.  I run the same sound card, but usually run around level
10 on the k3 to put the input in the middle of the Tascam input level knob
range.

Make sure you are using the right input jack on the Tascam, and the line out on
the k3.

When I used an internal sound card on a laptop with a too-sensitive mic input,
I used a cheap Radio Shack headphone cable with an inline volume control.  I
ran that on EME for years and it worked like a charm.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 RTTY contest

2013-01-09 Thread barry whittemore

Bill, I use RTTY often in contests and find it incredibly easy to use. I built
a very simple interface and use FSK rather than AFSK. that does not require any
adjustments etc. I do some of the AFSK modes as well but one mans settings will
not be the same as another depending on software volume levels etc. it is just
a trial and adjust but it works well and is an easy process.
I can send you a pdf of my interface cable if you like. It works good but
requires its own serial port. I have used it with a real serial port as well
as a USB to serial adapter and it works either way. with the FSK there are no
level adjustments needed.
I have not used an FT5K but i used to have an FT1000 MP that i loved but i find
my K3 to be the absolute best radio i have ever owned. its almost effortless to
go from one mode to another.
no relation to Elecraft other than a very happy owner. (1/2 owner actually, i
share with NE1F)

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 RFI problem

2013-01-09 Thread Brian Alsop

Dave,

Most likely a tuner is being used.
If the balun failed one might not notice that since one generally tunes
to min SWR. Unless one recognizes something changed, one wouldn't know
it failed. This is especially true for auto tuners.

This not knowing it failed is wide spread for bead baluns-- although
this isn't the case here.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 RTTY contest

2013-01-09 Thread amsctalx
I used mine in this weekend's ARRL Round-Up in conjunction with N1MM (using the
FLDIGI modem) and a sound card. The system, of which the K3 is more or less the
RF front end, worked great. It's nice to be able to pick out an S3 multiplier
station next (next-next) to an S9 +30 honker with no AGC pumping, de-sense,
etc.. I owned a Flex 5K until recently (still pictured on my QRZ page, have to
update that) and I have to say the K3-based combination works better in terms
of RF performance and interoperability with contesting gear.

I'm no K3LR, so take my experience with a grain of salt...but it works for me.

[Elecraft] [K3][P3] Using the P3 for SSTV

I would be interested to know whether there is any progress on this. How
far down the wish-list is SSTV ? This would be particularly useful now
we can use the P3 on a big SVGA screen.

Not a K3 user, yet! but I use a IC-718 with N1MM and a Signalink USB in

Note: Normally, LIN OUT sets a fixed-level receive-only output for main/sub

where the line outputs match headphone audio, audio level is controlled by
AF/SUB gain controls, and both RX and TX audio are available.

[Elecraft] K3 RTTY

2013-01-09 Thread Jim Miller
Used my K3/P3/KPA500/KAT500 combo this past weekend in the RTTY Roundup. I
use a Numark USB soundcard from Amazon for about $30 and it worked great.
This is one of the soundcards recommended by Jim Brown, K9YC.

Setup is easy just follow the instructions in the K3 manual for AFSK. The
only thing I do is to set the Numark volume control to max and put a bit of
tape over it to keep it from being changed.

Used N1MM for the software. Ran 500w without any issues.

It was my first real attempt at any RTTY other than an extremely rare QSO.
Worked fine without any problems.

From a troubleshooting point of view jumping right to the balun
requires making a lot of assumptions, most of them unwarranted given
what little we know so far from his post. More importantly, a balun
with a ruined core is going to look bad for SWR no matter what power
level is fed to it, and he says that things look fine at 300 watts but
go south at 400 watts. That's an arc over problem somewhere ...

This not knowing it failed is wide spread for bead baluns-- although
this isn't the case here.

you've been doing this for a bit, it's ruined. Heat anneals the core

cracked it.

Now whether a 4:1 balun is the thing to use is another issue.
You don't say how long your open wire line is so it is impossible to
estimate the impedance seen by the balun.

Here are the approximate antenna feedpoint impedances for a 120'
double 50' up.

80M 47 -j188 SWR=17:1 4:1 balun at antenna feedpoint makes
situation worse
40M 1724 +j1869 SWR =75:1 4:1 balun at antenna helps
20M 415 + j880 SWR =45:1 4:1 balun at antenna helps
15M 186+281jSWR =13:1 4:1 balun at antenna helps
12M 1293-155jSWR =63:1 4:1 balun at antenna helps
10M 122.4-j100 SWR =4:14:1 balun at antenna helps

It is clear that 12M may be close to the worst of the lot

If one knew the electrical properties and length of the ladder line,
one can do the impedance transformations and determine just what
impedances the balun sees. One may end up with entirely different
conclusions from above. The G5RV is an example of a doublet antenna
where the ladder line length is pruned to find an acceptable match on
several bands.

Re: [Elecraft] PSK31 on K3/100

2013-01-09 Thread Rick Bates
Because ultimately it is simpler and keeps extraneous noises off of the air
such as system sounds. It also means that you can set/forget audio settings
once properly set. If you choose to use a soundcard, a cheap USB soundcard
is just fine.

Of course, PSK is inherent in the K3 abilities so a simple terminal program
is sufficient too.

As for 40M Ray, if it is manageable, you might want to listen in the early
morning just before your local sunrise (+2-3 hours), it's been a LOT of fun
on long path lately (all the way up to 10M actually, I worked Oman and UAE
on 10M last week, long path).

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 RFI problem

2013-01-09 Thread Rick Bates
I agree that the balun should be checked but that it is likely NOT the issue
here as it works on the other bands. If it is replaced, using a 1:1 common
mode choke (not just a voltage balun or series of ferrite cores on the coax)
would be a good thing to try. I opted for the 10KW rated version as I never
want to have an issue and I only run 700 watts.

To make clear an earlier statement of mine, without the added coax, the
untuned VSWR was 24:1, with the added coax it is under 10:1. The KAT500
tuned the wire in both cases here but in the original configuration tuned
my EDZ to 1:1 at low power then faulted out at anything above 300 watts.
Adding more coax solved the issue (I tried a shorter run too, no change) by
shifting the 80M voltage peak to someplace else on the feed.

Is your wire antenna insulated or bare? Is there a chance that it is arcing
(wet tree, mast ???)? With the voltages produced at QRO, the potential is
there. Ditto your window line, insulated or bare? Is rain or snow
impacting it? You'd know because it would need retuning.

among them some problems with buttons not properly toggling functions, not

So far a couple of my bug reports have been modified to read 'Fix Build',

I doubt if HRD will ever be the 'complete' rig control solution for a K3 or
any other transceiver.

an error in the HRD band layout definitions as set in the

I have a really odd bug going on and I don't know if it is the K3 or

except when it happens to be any frequency in the 30s - that is 3.530

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 RFI problem

If it is RFI problem (as it was initially suspected) I would first
disconnect the control cable between K3 and KPA500. I would use only
separate PTT line to the amd and see if the problem is gone on the affected

I agree that the balun should be checked but that it is likely NOT the
issue
here as it works on the other bands. If it is replaced, using a 1:1
common
mode choke (not just a voltage balun or series of ferrite cores on the
coax)
would be a good thing to try. I opted for the 10KW rated version as I
never

want to have an issue and I only run 700 watts.

Adding more coax solved the issue (I tried a shorter run too, no change)
by

shifting the 80M voltage peak to someplace else on the feed.

Is your wire antenna insulated or bare? Is there a chance that it is
arcing

(wet tree, mast ???)? With the voltages produced at QRO, the potential is
there. Ditto your window line, insulated or bare? Is rain or snow
impacting it? You'd know because it would need retuning.

Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] 160-80 meter mod?

2013-01-09 Thread Rich Heineck

John,

The 160/80 meter mod that improves IMD dynamic range requires replacing
a total of four parts in the T/R switching and one of the BP filters.
The mod would not be overly difficult for someone proficient with SMD
rework but I wouldn't recommend it for someone who isn't. To answer
your question, trying to break off the existing parts would most likely
damage the board. The areas are also pretty dense, so soldering iron
access is a bit tricky in a couple spots.

among them some problems with buttons not properly toggling functions, not
being highlighted as to state, the lack of a 6M and 2M band selection
button, etc.

So far a couple of my bug reports have been modified to read 'Fix Build',

I doubt if HRD will ever be the 'complete' rig control solution for a K3 or
any other transceiver.

[Elecraft] KXV3A Utility Program 1 milliwatt calibration failure

2013-01-09 Thread JohnDePrimo
There was some chatter about this issue earlier in the year but did not see any
clear resolution. Like what others were seeing, the utility program
successfully completes 5 and 50 watt calibrations but settles on 0.1mw when
performing the 1 milliwatt cal; i.e., fails to achieve 1.0mw.

With the 5w and 50w calibration process, the power is automatically adjusted by
the utility program to achieve the correct power level. However, the power does
NOT automatically adjust when running the 1 mw cal. I can fool the program by
manually adjusting power to 1.00 mw for each band but suppose that defeats the
purpose.

There is a 50 ohm DL on the XVTR out in accordance with directions. Yes...
Jumpers W1 and W2 were cut flush with the board. I have the latest FW in the
K3. What's the next step?

I do have the antenna tuner installed and tuned to the band where I'm

There was a change in K3 firmware around version 4.43 where we had to use a

different PC commands to request 1 milliwatt depending on MCU revisions.

If you're using an older K3 Utility you might see 0.1 milliwatt requested.

[Elecraft] KPA RFI problem

2013-01-09 Thread Ron W3ZV
First, a thank you to everyone who has taken an interest and provided
information on my problem.

In an attempt to quantify the problem, I sent Jack W6FB a copy of the fault
dump on the KPA500. I sent Dick K6KR, the trace he requested from the KAT500. I
also sent him the information he requested, from the KAT500. If those prove
helpful, I will share the information.

Tuning solution at 25 watts on 24.968MHz

capacitance 104 pf
inductance 340 nH
vswr 1.17
bypass vswr 6.17
capacitors on antenna side unchecked.

While going through the trace exercise for Dick, I set the K3 to produce a dead
carrier and then slowly increased the drive from 10 watts to the point where
the amp showed 500 watts output with no fault. Thinking the gods had smiled on
me, I switched to sub, set the power to give 400 watts, started to call CQ and
the amp faulted. I did not capture this fault so I started another trace and
slowly increases the drive power while calling CQ, and got to 500 watts peak
output with no fault. I then set the drive to give 400 watts peak output,
started a trace and began calling CQ. The amp faulted. I repeated the dead
carrier sequence and let it sit key down for ten seconds. No fault.

I am not sure if this is useful information or just a confirmation that the
faults are unpredictable.

PITCH=915Hz [I can't hear anything above about 1200 anyway].  Set 915Hz
in MMTTY. If your computer has only a MIC input, you'll probably need
an attenuator feeding it, you can make one from a couple of resistors,
or you can get one from Radio Shack. This same thing works with the K2,
you do need the SSB adapter and the attenuator into the MIC jack. I
used that for several years before getting the K3.

More info:

I have the ATU installed in the KX3. Even with the KX3 directly connected
to a good 50 ohm load, running an autotune on the XV bands (28 MHz) causes
lots of relay chatter in the radio, and a displayed SWR of 25.4 that does
not change. On the other bands (including 28 MHz) it immediately goes to 1.0.

Setting the ATU to bypass still does not get RF output on the XV bands. The
current draw key down at 0.1 watt is about 0.43 A on the XV bands, and
about .55 on the HF bands where there is output.

Has the KX3 firmware caught up with the XV bands? I'm using V1.30.

The absolute numbers may not be very accurate, but why the big difference?

A suggestion that I would like to see implemented:

An option in the CW Key menu of None, so one could use a 3.5mm mono plug,
ignoring the short to ground across what would be the ring in a stereo
plug.

If you're using an older K3 Utility you might see 0.1 milliwatt requested.

Subject: [Elecraft] KXV3A Utility Program 1 milliwatt calibration failure

There was some chatter about this issue earlier in the year but did not see
any clear resolution. Like what others were seeing, the utility program
successfully completes 5 and 50 watt calibrations but settles on 0.1mw
when performing the 1 milliwatt cal; i.e., fails to achieve 1.0mw.

With the 5w and 50w calibration process, the power is automatically adjusted
by the utility program to achieve the correct power level. However, the
power does NOT automatically adjust when running the 1 mw cal. I can fool
the program by manually adjusting power to 1.00 mw for each band but suppose
 that defeats the purpose.

There is a 50 ohm DL on the XVTR out in accordance with directions. Yes...
Jumpers W1 and W2 were cut flush with the board. I have the latest FW in the
 K3. What's the next step?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 and HRD

2013-01-09 Thread Rick Bates
Hi Rick,

The TUNE button properly sets the KAT3 tuner tuning operation. I had to
make a new CAT command to change it to an actual TUNE (send a carrier) to
tickle the KAT500 into knowing what band portion I was on or for retuning.
Um, SWH16? I'd have to look again.

Unless I've totally missed something in V6b2, having an integrated terminal
program (make it part of DM780?) for the K3 native PSK and FSK modes would
be REALLY useful instead of relying on Data A mode or other external wiring.
It could also be used to manually enter in commands for macro testing and it
would play well with other brands of similar abilities.

I also created a button and band display for 6M.

Another row (or three) of buttons would be useful for remote ops since it's
easy to run out of buttons. I've retasked some of them for remote
operations.

I've also noted that some buttons do not light up when active.

The metering does not show the SWR in tune/tx mode(s) nor is it very
responsive to quick changes. This also occurs when operating local so it
isn't necessarily a polling frequency or latency issue that one would expect
over a network.

Thanks!

Ok guys.. this is K3/KX3 week

What do you all think is missing in HRD that the K3 command set supports?
Not bugs, but things that aren't implemented.

And it HAS to be in the cat controls to be implemented..

I've logged a few bugs in HRD's bug tracking system about K3 rig control -
among them some problems with buttons not properly toggling functions, not
being highlighted as to state, the lack of a 6M and 2M band selection
button, etc.

One thing I miss in my Elecraft Transceivers from my IC-7000 days.

I miss the end of band notification. Especially in the KX3 when operating it
portable or mobile.

Not as critical in the K3 but would be a nice feature in both K3 and KX3 for
sight impaired or sightless hams or old guys like me who are trying to
multi-task.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Keyer Cable Connection Problem

2013-01-09 Thread Mark Kopec
I resumed troubleshooting by going back to the basics. First, I cut off the
connectors on one end of the Bencher factory cable. Instead of using the
Bencher keyer, I then connected the red and white wires to a post on my
Vibroplex Original keyer, and the black wire to another post on this keyer.
Using the 1/4 adapter, I inserted the plug into the Keyer port on the K3.
Instant success! It worked perfectly. Yet another reason to keep a reliable
bug in the shack.

Next, I created a second cable for the Bencher keyer by reworking a factory
made patch cable with 1/4 plugs. While doing that I discovered the sources
of trouble I had previously with this keyer. The other cable had not been
securely attached to ground, and the keyer was shipped from the factory with
both paddles in contact with their posts.

If I had to do it over again, I would make my own cable from another patch
cable. In fact, that is exactly what I plan to do soon, because I recently
received a new Bencher ST-1 keyer for my collection.

Can anyone who has done the 160/80 meter LP filter mod tell me if there are
parts now on the pads on the circuit board? If there are, did you just
break them off (then clean up the pads) or heat them and remove them?

[Elecraft] KX3 Battery Charging Question

2013-01-09 Thread Dave Moorman
Hello, all -

I installed the KXBC3 and charged up the batteries. It's all working well.

My understanding from reading the manual is that the KXBC3 does not
automatically charge the batteries.

For example, if you use the KX3 on battery power for a few hours and then plug
it into the power supply in the shack, the batteries will not be automatically
be topped off, but you have to go to the bat chg menu item and initiate a
charge. Is that correct?

Thanks,

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Battery Charging Question

2013-01-09 Thread Matt Zilmer
Correct. You can set the time on the charge too, using the VFO A
dial. Charge rate runs about 200 mA, so in general a 12 hour charge
works for fully discharged batteries. It's one of those YMMV things.
