[Elecraft] K3 and PR6 configuration help needed
Last week I build a new K3. In adddition I have a PR6 6M receive preamplifier. Unfortuntely I don´t know how to use the PR6 together with the K3 (no ATU, but KRX3 subreceiver installed)). The PR6 manual (Revision B, May 19, 2011) seems to be not correct. On page 2 in Installation and Operation it says: so the PR6 may be attached to the K3 using the supplied male-male BNC connectors as shown in Figure2 .. Figure 2 does not show a K3 as I have but one with K3s KXV3 (6M) module installed. On page 3 (top) Other 6-Meter Receivers and Transceivers it says: ...limit the RF power passing through the PR6 to 15 watt in bypass I don´t want to be restricted to 15 watts and don´t want to buy a KXV3. I feel you, Gerald! I, too, have all three, and I keep finding myself coming back to the K2! I'm pretty sure it's the lower tech look and feel -- I work around high-tech all day; when I want to relax, the last thing I want to do is interact with another high-tech device. Re: [Elecraft] Owner of a MAC and KX3
Mac running a recent version of OS X works fine with the KX3. The only trouble I ran into was trying to reload the factory/original config file - for some reason the Mac's KX3 Utility wouldn't recognize the file format, so I moved to a PC and reloaded it there without a problem. You aren'y likely to need to reload the factory config though - this was due to another issue I was trying to solve. If you launch the KX3 Utility and don't see any comm ports in the pulldown list, you probably don't have the right FTDI USB drivers installed - common problem that many of us have run into, and easy to fix with a download. For normal operation you should be all set. --Andrew, NV1B .. On Sun, Mar 31, 2013 at 9:02 AM, AB1SX adventur...@me.com wrote: I am a new ham and just bough a kx3 and own a MAC. Re: [Elecraft] K3 and PR6 configuration help needed
Hello Knut, It should be no problem to use the PR6 with the sub RX auxiliary antenna input. It does mean that the receiver will be using a different antenna than your transmit antenna. Connect the 6 m receive antenna to the Preamp In BNC. Connect the Preamp Out BNC to the Sub RX AUX BNC. Power up the PR6 using the DIGOUT1 when on 6m. If you want to use the Sub RX AUX input on other bands, connect a jumper between the Bypass IN and OUT BNC on the PR6 and don't power the PR6. 73, Fred KE7X The Elecraft K3: Design, Configuration and Operation Second Edition www.ke7x.com -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Knut Baczko Sent: Sunday, March 31, 2013 1:12 AM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] K3 and PR6 configuration help needed Last week I build a new K3. Re: [Elecraft] Don Wilhelm Plaudits
Hi All, The recent outpouring of appreciation for Don's help and mentoring is certainly well deserved. I too have been in awe of the time and effort Don puts forth to help others. It's Herculean! I can't actually put my finger on the statistics, but I'm guessing that, when someone has posted an SOS on just about any Elecraft product (in fact, on just about any problem!), there was better than a 50-50 chance that Don would offer some assistance. Don has a wealth of knowledge and experience, and shares it most willingly. I know, sometimes it may not be exactly what others might suggest, but at least he tries to offer something viable. When he does, it is always from a significantly informed perspective. For someone like me, who struggle a bit with all the complexities, it's like finding an oasis in the desert. Don is on my must read list too. I often point out that I only know what I read, and although I may not know much, I know a heck of a lot more than I otherwise would thanks to Don. It's like getting periodic injections of knowledge to read Don's offerings. Don Wilhelm's Internet University! What's great about Don's posts is that he not only gives you a possible answer, he typically tells you why! That's priceless! I've had the privilege of meeting Don, several times, at Dayton and FDIM. It's opportunities like that which make going there really worthwhile. Don is a very fine fellow, and we are most fortunate to have him as a friend of us all. [Elecraft] KX3 utility not reading firmware installed in KX3
Hi: I'm having a problem with my KX3 when I attempt to upload new firmware. 1)The radio is communicating with the program -- when I test communications, I get a reply from the utility indicating KX3 waiting for firmware upload. RE-232 sped 38400 bit/s ( pic1 http://i993.photobucket.com/albums/af58/andyvavra/Case/pic1_zps47e6ea9c.jpg ). 2)I have downloaded the latest firmware files from the Elecraft website and placed them in the default folder. 3)When I attempt the check versions however, the utility is not reading the firmware installed in the KX3 and the options to send firmware remain greyed-out. ( pic2 http://i993.photobucket.com/albums/af58/andyvavra/Case/pic2_zpsa118b9c0.jpg ) 4)I have uninstalled and reinstalled the KX3 Utility. I am running version 1.12.8.11 and my operating system is Windows 7. 5)When I check the FW REVS directly in the KX3 using the menu function, it tells me that I have firmware uC 01.36 installed. I am hesitant to to a hard reset of the KX3 out of concern that I may not be able to reload new firmware if the program and radio aren't correctly communicating. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 utility not reading firmware installed in KX3
Are you absolutely certain that COM7 is the right serial port for your KX3? Are there others available in the KX3 Utility Port tab list of com ports? If your KX3 LCD shows a VFO frequency, then the expected response from the KX3 Utility is different than you're seeing. The response you have shown is as if the device is just echoing anything. See KX3 Utility Help, Port tab, Test Communications. There are three possible responses to the test communications button, and if your KX3 has running firmware, it should respond with KX3 MCU version xx.xx. RS-232 speed 38400 bit/s. It could also be a faulty USB to Serial adapter that is echoing whatever is sent to it. 73 de Dick, K6KR -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of KD3RF Sent: Sunday, March 31, 2013 7:46 AM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] KX3 utility not reading firmware installed in KX3 Hi: I'm having a problem with my KX3 when I attempt to upload new firmware. 1)The radio is communicating with the program -- when I test communications, I get a reply from the utility indicating KX3 waiting for firmware upload. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 utility not reading firmware installed in KX3
Hi Dick: Solved the problem and it was port related, but not what one would expect. I took the rig to a friend's house who also has a KX3 and it worked there. What we figured out but I did not realize at my home QTH was that my laptop has a USB 2.0 and a USB 3.0 port. The 2.0 port works and reads and writes as it should. The 3.0 port recognizes the rig is connected but does not read the firmware list in my KX3. This could be related to my specific computer, or it could be a driver or adapter issue; no real way to tell. I will update my posting as soon as it becomes available, and will also advise Elecraft support. 73. -- Andy, KD3RF / VE2DXY From: Dick Dievendorff [via Elecraft] ml-node+s365791n7572039...@n2.nabble.com To: KD3RF avav...@verizon.net Sent: Sunday, March 31, 2013 3:15 PM Subject: Re: KX3 utility not reading firmware installed in KX3 Are you absolutely certain that COM7 is the right serial port for your KX3? The response you have shown is as if the device is just echoing anything. See KX3 Utility Help, Port tab, Test Communications. There are three possible responses to the test communications button, and if your KX3 has running firmware, it should respond with KX3 MCU version xx.xx. RS-232 speed 38400 bit/s. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Utility Noise
I had a bad problem with noise when I hooked my K3 to my computer using a USB adapter and any program that polled the K3 frequency. I had to add a USB hub for another problem and discovered that it cured the noise problem. Now I always feed the USB adapter thru a USB hub and never have the noise problem on any of my three computers. [Elecraft] Firmware 1.41 Field Test de KB4QQJ
KX3 MCU 1.41 / DSP 1.13, 3-26-2013 ** AF GAIN SMOOTHER AT LOW END: The AF gain control now has finer granularity at the low end. To accommodate this , the gain range is now 0-60 (was 0-40).* FIXED. This is much much better. Previously my volume was either off, or on at a comfortable listening level and controllable up to max setting. There was no smooth transition between off and comfortable listening. This has been fixed in 1.41. Now it is a nice smooth transition between no volume, very slight audio and soft audio to full volume. ** INTERNAL SPEAKER BEHAVIOR IMPROVED: * ENLIGHTENED and buzz is FIXED Originally I had no issues with distortion on KX3 #085. Consequently I have listened with skepticism to all the issues others were having. HOWEVER, after reading KA9ZAP's report I stumbled on an condition that does indeed create the dreaded buzz with the old software. (1.34 es older) I use a 700 to 750 Hz sidetone when I can. ( what the old rigs used and I'm deaf between 450 and low 600 Hz) At volume levels up to and including 28 I had no distortion on ssb/cw. These volumes were to loud and uncomfortable to listen to but no distortion on versions up to 1.34. After reading that Art was using 500 Hz, I lowered the sidetone on KX3 #85 to 500Hz and viola, a nasty buzz above volume level settings of 25. (ver 1.34) On the new 1.41 I have no distortion up to the audio limiter taking over. (AF LIM nor 30) If I set the AF LIM to 001 it is not distorted but is very uncomfortable to listen to simply because it is too loud. It is sort of confusing to have volume settings to 60 only to have it knocked back to 50 by the limiter. Even with limiter set to 001 I can not get the radio to hold an overloaded volume. It displays the high current warning and drops the volume back to a very loud, undistorted 54. Good protection. ** FM DEVIATION AND FM MIC GAIN SETTING BEHAVIOR CORRECTED:* WORKS AS DESCRIBED IN MANUAL There are several 6 meter FM repeaters located in my area. Using 1.41 all the adjustment responded appropriately. In tests with locals on the repeater I could easily adjust the settings to result in reports of very low audio to dang Drake, turn that thing down! , your splattering. When set by the KX3's instruction manual I got very good audio reports. Best setting for my voice was, Mic gain of 13. When I activated the compression it was noticeable to everyone even at settings of 1. Anything above 5 and I got complaints. ** NEW LCD BRT MENU ENTRY:* ** Works as described. [Elecraft] KX3 Loss of Signal Strength
I haven't used my KX3 much since getting it last year, but I brought it to my in-laws for Easter and hooked up my Pac-12 antenna. On 40 meters, I've been getting a strange popping in the signal level. I've also noticed that the signal drops from about an S5 and strong background noise in the audio to becomming very subdued and S1 or less. If I hit the TUNE button momentarily to transmit, the signal goes back up once the radio goes back to receive. Any thoughts? Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Loss of Signal Strength
It's very common that if you have a poor connection in the antenna system -- dirty or oxidized pin in a coax connector, for example, or a poorly soldered connection in a balun -- then hitting it with a little RF will temporarily 'fix' it.
