[Elecraft] K3 simple remote for home use
Hi, I would like to be able to use my rig from other rooms in my house. I know how to route audio through Skype and how to use Windows Remote Desktop. I use both DXLab and N1MM logger. However, tuning the rig is usually not greatly done via the logging software and if I want to run some special command, it may not be available in the loggers. So, what other free remote software are others using for removing the K3 operations through a WAN/LAN? No additional hardware required/needed... I am assuming that I would have to disable CAT in the logger and then enable CAT in that other software. What are others using? I see some older tools on Elecraft's website, but not sure how good they still are. Must be free. [Elecraft] New K3 owner, couple of questions (APF vs. DUAL PB, NR under the water sound, KPA3 temp)
Hi, I put together my new K3 without any issues. My 8 and 10 year old daughters helped and they really enjoyed it too. Overall I am very happy with its performance. I do not seem to need PRE on the high bands as much, but I do seem to need ATT on the low bands more... I guess that is by design. I have a few things I need to figure out and the manual does not seem to help: 1. DUAL PB, APF. I am not sure I get the APF to work. I do not hear or see the middle peak of the filter. I think I only get DUAL PB, no matter what I set in the config menu. I am using the latest FW. Any ideas how to verify? 2. NR: I like how the noise goes away, but I do not like the under-the-water sound (K2 owner, no DSP experience). I seem to switch constantly back and forth... I am using the default setting for NR (F1-1). Is there a way to back off the setting slightly to have a better compromise setting? 3. KPA3 temp: The fans are MUCH quieter as my K2's which is good, but I do worry that I have not setup something right...When I monitor the KPA3 temperature, what is the max value that I should watch out for? I am getting up to 41 C during casual operation. Re: [Elecraft] K3 - using Clear Speech Speaker
I was planning on getting a K3. Can someone explain to me why so many ops use external DSPs. Is the K3 DSP not working well enough. I would prefer to have everything in a box without many peripherals, as I got these anyway for SO2R, antenna switching etc So, again, how good or bad is the K3 DSP. My main focus is CW and low bands. Well I am on the high bands too, but I do not see a need for DSP there. Current rig is a K2. Basically, I leave it on 'ALL THE TIME'. It reduces 'ear fatigue' from extraneous noise and makes the whole experience inviting to have long casual 'rag chews' even between continents. Whenever I turn off the extra signal processing to reset the K3 settings to best performance, I inevitably turn it back on again, because the difference is so dramatic. Strong signals sound like local FM and weak signals are sometimes readable with the outboard DSP, while impossible without it. Good luck on whatever you decide to do. I prefer the SGC because of it's ease of switching between 0db, -13db or -26db noise reduction with a single switch. I use the SGC on 6M, when I want to monitor 50.125 USB continuously. I put it in the -26dB mode and all the static is gone, so I just wait for voices to show up. Unfortunately it makes everything sound like water dripping, which can be a little annoying. The GAP is either on or off, and you are constaly messing with the switches on the back of it to change the level. Generally the DSP speakers have a slight delay, which can be a problem. Every time you switch from transmit to receive, the DSP speaker has to relearn its parameters, so the first 1/2 second or so is without DSP. It is amazing how often this is the other call you are trying to pick out, which is obliterated by the initial switch-over noise. I have a K3, and have not found it's DSP to be particulary useful. Usually by the time I need to use the NR on the K3, the signal I am listening to is too far gone for it to really help much. [Elecraft] Good microphone for K2 and K3
Hi, I got a K2 now and may own a K3 in the near future. My K2 works really well with the Heil Pro Set Dynamic mike (K2 jumpered for it, internal resistor etc.). Re: [Elecraft] [K2] Displayed frequency question.
Gil and others, I can just recommend to follow Don's article. It has worked very well for me. What has worked best for me was to use the N6KR method to calibrate the reference oscillator (with WWV at 10Mhz). I carried out about 4 iterations for matching the 2 frequencies between TP1 and TP2. At the end, I had to set both frequencies not to exactly the same frequency, but TP1 to -30Hz in order to get the most accurate frequency reading across all bands. Note you cannot get closer than +-10Hz with the K2. Re: [Elecraft] K2: Attempting K2 SSB modulation and ALC mods, but board too old?
Don (and others), One problem down, one to go. I believe I have solved the modulation issue. I started fresh and did all alignments, from Freq calibration, PLL, Filters, BFO passband (with your excellent descriptions on how to use Spectrogram). Especially the BFO was way off. I am not sure if these settings somehow deteriorate overtime or what happened. I know that stored digital values cannot simply change, but analog components can and maybe that's what it is. Or (not impossibly) I screwed up big times 9 years ago when I built the K2. I listened in a SDR and really noticed how the BFO passband changes the overall modulation. Great. Now, my SSB power output is still not very good. I would think that this is an ALC issue. On the same frequency on 40m, using a dummy load, I can get 110 W out in CW, but about 40 W in SSB (and me screaming into the mike), with ALC showing four LEDs on the right display. On 20m, I get about 40 W out without an ALC. This is with both the Elecraft MH2 and the Elecraft Heil pro 2. So, I think I am kind of back to my original issue of trying to attempt the QRP Projekt mods for more mike drive and ALC circuits. Or are there other things I should be checking first? Is there a way to temporarily disable the ALC to see if the output is artificially controlled down? Andy, Does your SSB OP1 filter look good on the Spectrogram display? You must select the OP1 filter for the SSB FL1 filter position. SSB FL1 is the filter used for SSB transmit - there is no choice, and you must adjust the BFOs for good response - filter passband low frequency corner at 300 Hz and the high frequency corner at 2600 Hz. 73, Don W3FPR Thanks for the prompt reply. I have made both the mods you mentioned below (filer bandwidth and A2B). In CW the K2 functions flawlessly, I get out more than 100W out on most bands. I am using the MH2 or Heil Pro set and just get horrible audio reports and the ALC does not play well. On 40, the ALC comes on with 4 LEDs, but without reaching 100W; on other bands ALC never lights any LEDs. It may be possibly that the SSB board is just misaligned. It was my understanding that the filters for SSB are only used in receive, but in transmit the same filter as in CW is used, so alignment may not be the problem. Hello Andy, Although I built a number of K2 in the past with much higher serial numbers, I have recently been doing the upgrade of a K2 in the region of #18xx. I am in the same boat as yours. The KSB2 with mine is also Rev.D like yours. Perhaps, I would like to share with you the following: 1. I got good power output and audio in SSB even when I am using an Adzen dynamic microphone worthing US$20. This microphone is not so sensitive and I have to set SSBA3 and SSBC3. If I use an Elecraft MH2, I need to reduce the setting to SSBA2 and SSBC2. 2. I have no problem to get 10w or slightly over in SSB measured by my LP100A. 3. There is not much difference between Rev D and Rev G other than Elecraft can no longer get the 8 pin SSM2165 for U3, so the design have to be changed to the SSM2166 14 pin device. Therefore, I did not ask for a change of a new PCB. I don't think you need that either. Therefore, before doing any modification, I would suggest the following: a. make sure the basic K2 (without KSB2)TX power and RX performance are according to the specifications; b. upon installation of KSB2, check the power output by key down or pressing TUNE, see whether you are able to get the same power output as the basic K2 The REV D KSB2 gives an IF bandwidth of 2.1Khz. Elecraft eventually did some changes in component values and gives you the choice between 2.4 / 2.6Khz. The details are given here: http://www.elecraft.com/manual/SSBCAPKT.pdf In fact, there are a number of hardware changes since #2555, I would suggest you read the following; http://www.elecraft.com/manual/k2a2binstr.pdf All the hardware modifications are not difficult to be handled. Even I am not a radio man by professional, I still manage to do that. Re: [Elecraft] K2 SSB audio distorted. Realignment, MIC gain mod etc.
Thank you very much for the information Don. I opened the rig and took a look at it. Also, found some references to mods that I did. Here is the info: - Yes, I have the K2/100. - The following mods related to KPA100 have been made: o K2 12/10m BPF mod (from June 2002) o K2 VFO ALC mod (from June 2002) o KPA 100 shield upgrade (from June 2003) o KPA 100 Upgrade kit (Rev. B, Feb 2004) - The cables are not tucked in between the KPA100 and the top of the Control board, I will try this next and let you know. - I also see a mod where the audio line level is brought out to the rear of the K2 for sound card connection (from J5). I will take the cable out for now and see if this makes a difference. - R14 on the KSB2 board is 5.6K and R2 is 1K. I believe that means the simple mic gain mod has been made that was to swap R2 and R14. However, I found this http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/Mic-Gain-K2-100-td394881.html#a394889 .I think I did that because my VOX did not work right, even now, I am not happy by the VOX operations. However, since I am using MicroHam Keyer II and foot switch, I am not sure I need to worry about VOX. Possibly, I should undo this change? What do you think? - You mention the speaker shield. Even though I have the shield update kit installed, I do NOT have any type of shield on the speaker magnet. Ideas? Thank you very much for your help. Looking forward to some pointers. Realignment, MIC gain mod etc. Andy, I assume you have the K2/100 rather than the K2/10. The KPA100 can couple into the KSB2 board giving audio distortion. Remove the right side panel and tuck the ribbon cable and speaker cable up into the space between the KPA100 and the top of the Control Board. Mods to increase the mic gain have been several - change the value of resistor R14 is the simplest, adding a mic preamp is a bit more involved, and for those who want a bit better performance there is the KI6WX SSB Increased RF Gain mod. If the latter is installed in a K2/100, changes to the KSB2 ALC circuit should also be made - if you have a transistor added to your KSB2 near U5 (either on the top or bottom of the board), then you have that mod installed - I can give you the ALC changes that should be made. Since you have an older KPA100, do you have the shield up to date? You should have a shield on the speaker magnet, there should be clips on the shield and there should be a direct connection between the top of the shield and the SO-239 jack (that connection is usually made with 2 solder lugs connected together). 73, Don W3FPR On 12/31/2011 2:47 AM, Andreas Hofmann wrote: Hi I have SN 2555 and have exclusively used it for CW. What would be the mostly likely reason my audio is distorted? I scanned the manuals but there is no procedure to align the MIC gain anywhere. How can this be done? The rig is 7-8 years old, I am considering spending an evening and realigning everything. Is this something that could fix this issue? If my memory is right, and there was a MIC gain mod at some point, can someone send me a copy/details, so I can investigate if I have it and possibly undo it? [Elecraft] K2 KSB2 alignment: Cannot find the point to connect TP2 to?
Stupid question, I have found the round female TP2-labeled point, but not the point where the other side goes to. Looked for 10 mins but no success. Re: [Elecraft] K2 SSB audio distorted. Realignment, MIC gain mod etc.
Don, Your suggestions worked. I tucked the wires better away from the KSB2 and replaced R2 back to its original value (VOX is now unusable, but I am fine with it). The distortions are gone with SSBC 1-1 and signal gets a little distorted with more compression but that is normal I think. I noticed that there is quite a different of RF levels between different bands with the same mike. I am considering doing the other SSB mods as you suggested from http://www.qrpproject.de/Media/pdf/SSBModsUK.pdf. It seems that these mods will help with the level difference on different bands. Thank you so much for your help. Realignment, MIC gain mod etc. Andreas, Yes, do tuck those cables up and away from the KSB2 board. The value of R14 may be OK, but I worry about the 1k at R2, that should be 5.6k so not to overdrive the balanced modulator. In addition to that, you might also put a 2.2k resistor between U5 pins 1 and 2 (it is easiest to mount on the carrier balance trimmer, it goes across the two outer leads - not the center lead). The VOX on the K2 is the one thing that is not the best. If you can use PTT rather than VOX, you will obtain better performance. 73, Don W3FPR On 1/4/2012 2:51 PM, Andreas Hofmann wrote: Thank you very much for the information Don. [Elecraft] K2 ALC question
My K2 is a few years old and I have used it exclusively for CW. Now, I am setting it up for SSB with a Heil Pro set. SSB is working and sounds good however some people tell me it could have a little bit more punch. I think I have the IMD mod done too. When I talk loudly, where should the ALC peak? I know it is going from right to left, but I try to figure out what level I should hit during the peaks. Except for perhaps transverters, which could have issues on both lists, the division would be beneficial to the non-K3 users who must now sift though the hundreds of K3 postings for a few morsels of K2 or K1 notes. [Elecraft] Winkeyer sounds soo different than K2

RE: [Elecraft] Winkeyer sounds soo different than K2
Let me clarify. The CW I am complaining is the K2 sidetone. The Winkeyer(microKeyerII) does not have a sidetone; it is fed to the K2 key jack and the K2 is configured to Hand. The timing is just way off. The dits are really short, but playing with the parameters has not changed much. Just wondering if others use it this way and what parameters they are using... Turn off the Winkeyer sidetone and turn on the K2 sidetone. You still have to feed the Winkeyer into the K2's key jack, and you are still using the K2's keyer, although only in handkey mode. The K2 sidetone still works, so just use it. On Nov 13, 2007, at 8:35 AM, Andreas Hofmann wrote: Hi, I miss the sound of my K2 built in keyer now after setting up winkeyer (as part of microKeyer II). [Elecraft] MicroHAM winkeyer help
Hi, I am trying to wire up a microkeyer 2 and the winkey connection does not work. If I set the K2 to INP HAND then it keys just one lone dah for the whole transmission. I think that's how it should be configured though. In the display of the MK it tells me the correct text, so I am assuming it sends the correct text (but I cannot confirm). If I set the K2 to INP LPDLr then it just gives me a long line of dits for the duration of the text. Any ideas what I am doing wrong? I see the External keying auto-detect in the manual, but it states it is not really needed as long as I change the menu, correct? [Elecraft] Adjusting side tone volume
Hi, I use my K2/100 mostly mobile and love it. I work DX a couple of times a week. The only one issue I don't like is the side tone volume adjustment I have to do all the time. My commute is part on the freeway and part through the city. The noise level on the freeway is obviosly higher, a side tone level of about 12 is needed. In the city, when I go about 30 or 40 miles an hour, the level I like is about 4 or 5. I have to adjust the level all the time with the following drawbacks: - adjustment cannot be done when transmitting (bad one, that's when I really want to change it) - need to hold a button (PF1) and then turn the knob, I wish it would be simpler - I adjust the AF gain anyway, but the side tone level is independent Why is the side tone level not routed through the normal audio path so the AF gain would change it too? Would that be something that would be possible to change? Any other simpler suggestions? 73 and thanks, Andy, KU7T ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr.
