Re: [Elecraft] Hub4Com
Hub4Com binaries are available with a little snooping around in the com0com sourceforge location:https://sourceforge.net/projects/com0com/files/hub4com/2.1.0.0/ It's a strategy for sourceforge to make it difficult to find things -- they want you to click on other things and view as many pages as possible. [Elecraft] TX_INH input (pin 7 on ACC) behavior
With my early K3, I'm attempting to control the TX_INH line on the ACC Connector, and am finding this odd (to me) behavior. Starting with the radio off, I'm driving the pin with either 0 or 5v through a 6.6K resistor per the Elecraft manual. I set the TX_INH mode to HI in the config screen, and even with the line NOT driven, TX_INH is indicated by the flashing TX in the display. If I get out my Fluke VOM, I see that there's around 0.2v measured at pin 7... BUT THEN THE TX INHIBIT goes off (that is, it starts working as described in the manual)? Is the TX_INH line floated in the radio? Do I need to also "pull down" this line to ground through a suitable high-value resistor? Adding a 470K ohm to ground seems to make everything happy. If this is expected behavior (requiring pull down as well as pull up), perhaps this could be mentioned in the manual in the future (maybe it only matters to my era of K3 radio -- #512) What makes this a little more difficult to debug is that after the line has been measured with the meter, causing it to work, TX_INH sometimes continues to work (High=inhibit, LO=tx). Until I power cycle the radio. Anyone who has done this before have any insight?thanks,-Brian N9ADG __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

[Elecraft] Macro for K3/K3s and FT8?
When plucking a particular station out on FT8, something that would be useful in the increasingly crowded segment conditions would be to have the radio's filters narrow the passband to just a particular width at a particular frequency (and then go back to a much wider bandwidth at particular times). I see that the IS and FW (or BW, recommended by the K3 programmer's manual) can do this -- has anyone developed a macro like this for this application? Example: FT8 on 20m uses the dial frequency of 14074.00, USB. If I'm trying to hear a station at 1800Hz, I'd like to narrow my RX passband to be between 14075.77 and 14076.10 (ft8 bw is 50Hz). But also want to go back to a 2.4 kHz bandwidth. I might also want to transmit outside the parameters of my RX passband, e.g. in this example, I might transmit tones from 800-850 Hz. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

[Elecraft] Flashing TX - sort of fixed
I'm not sure I "solved" it, but here's how I got the flashing TX to stop. Again, this is with a K3S, fw 5.50. Nothing attached to the rear panel, especially the ACC connector. LCD TX was constantly flashing. Went into Config: TX Inh, which was set to Inh=LO. set Inh=Off. Flashing TX stopped, TX functionality restored.. Went back into Config: TX inh, and set it to Inh=LO again. The Flashing TX did NOT re-occur. TX functions. Seems like there was some sort of TX Inh latch state that was cleared by turning TX Inh off or on. Re-cabling the K3S, and no problems so far -- Our ACC cable has a 1K resistor to +5v on pin 10 (tx_inh). That is now being obeyed again. -Brian N9ADG __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

[Elecraft] K1 Initial Build - LED and LCD Test
I'm helping out K7BTW with his K1 kit; we've got it assembled and tested to the point of #7 - Alignment and Test. We have done all of the somewhat static value checks and tests up to this point. When we turn the unit on (with no smoke or heating parts), the ATTN yellow light comes on, then off, then the RIT/XIT light flashes green, then RED (not really orange, to my eye. Yes, the 100K R9 and R10 around the LM358 op-amp are installed correctly). Then it goes out, then the ATTN light comes on again briefly, then it goes out. We get NOTHING on the LCD Display. We've run all of the continuity tests on the data lines, etc. If we power on the rig while holding the DISPLAY -or- the EDIT button, then the LED sequence is as above, except that the ATTN light stays on while the button is pressed; releasing the button shows "109" on the LCD (looks like the LCD is working). If I knew what the firmware was expecting from the hardware between the light sequence and the initial LCD display, I could better determine where we are finding some error. I suspect the CPU is expecting some condition that we aren't able to satisfy because of an error somewhere that we've not found yet. Suspecting that perhaps the EEPROM was a little scrambed, I held the EDIT and DISPLAY buttons down while powering on - that didn't really do anything, still no LCD display. Can anyone suggest any further troubleshooting, or locations to look at? [Elecraft] K1 Initial Build, no LCD, but will display version on power up -- FOUND IT!
The issue turned out to be an OPEN RFC6 on the RF board, so no 6v to the RF board. Re: [Elecraft] MMTTY DATA-A or FSK
We used two K3s for a M/2 in last weeks's contest, and did over 2000 Q's; I second the N1MM / FSK recommendation, as there are few variables to manage if I don't have to worry about TX levels. Also, it's definitely an opinion, but on the receive side, I personally dislike seeing other ops using ENTERLFs in macros during contests, as it can lead to chasing the information up the screen on the receive side. It's possible to click on a call in the MMTTY receive window to get it to enter into the logger using N1MM/MMTTY, which is one of the nice features. With ENTERLF printing, if one clicks a fraction of a second too late, the information has scrolled. A couple of spaces (double bag!) can do the job of resetting the decoder to letters instead. Don't even get me started on unusual exchanges. A long exchange that's different from everyone else e.g. PLEASE COPY 5NN CALIFORNIA CALIFORNIA BTU instead of 599 03 CA isn't doing you any favor. Don't forget the K3 has a built-in data decoder, for an additional vote on what the other station sent, if MMTTY and 2-Tone aren't enough. I have all of my receive antennas switchable into the sub RX or the rx input (a six by two matrix in my case) K9ay makes a box that can do this or you can build your own. K9ay has a preamp in his box so that there is no loss of level when both inputs are on the same antenna. The RX ant switch will toggle the main receiver between receive antenna(s) and the tx antenna. [Elecraft] K8UT RTTY presentation at Dayton
I attended the RTTY forum today at Dayton, and one of the presentations was from Larry, K8UT about a mechanism that he uses when doing SP in RTTY Contests -- he calls it Adaptive RX, and it's described in his program documentation for a utility that he wrote to control his Icom rig - http://www.k8ut.com/tiki-index.php?page=CI-Vfilter+Utility+Documentation#CI-Vfilter_Utility . As I understand it, he detects VFO frequency changes, and time on frequency to expand/narrow the RTTY filters dynamically, so that they're wider as the frequency is changing (moving up/down the band), and when the 'dwell time' on a frequency exceeds a certain specifiable time, narrows, as it's expected that the VFO is stopped on a signal. Larry's implemented it by a 'serial filter' of the his Icom's serial stream, and something similar could be done for the K3... but that sure seems like something cool that could be built in, eventually. -Brian N9ADG __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

It turned out to be a fault with the sound card, which took out the serial connections. When I first built the K3, I bought a cheap Prolific USB converter, which radiates awful noise over the spectrum. I decided to bite the bullet and buy the proper lead, which arrived today. Using my Toshiba laptop, on battery power, I get a couple of s points of noise on 10M with the KUSB connected and HRD fired up. This is using my 2 element DJ4VM quad, which is fed with 300 ohm twin into the shack, i.e. near the laptop. On LF, I can hear the pulsing information, in sympathy with the flashing LEDs on the KUSB on 160M at quite a high level. I can even detect this when fed into a Marconi dummy load. The K3 and the tuning units are bonder to an RF earth - a copper stake about 8 feet away from the K3. I have tried choking the USB lead at the laptop end, which does reduce the noise to a degree. The question I have is - am I being unrealistic in expecting zero noise to be radiated from these adaptors? Does anyone else have this problem - or has anyone looked for it? It is not very noticeable on CW or SSB. To hear it best, listen in the AM mode with the AGC off. On SSB it sounds like band noise. Is this a problem JUST with USB adaptors or can I expect silence when connecting a computer via RS232 to RS232. If not we are sacrificing a low noise floor for the convenience of computer control. Re: [Elecraft] K3 12 err
I encountered the same issue (repeatedly) yesterday with ~49 watts on CW during the 10m contest; in reading other reports of this error, and suggestions from another person that had this issue and conquered it, is that this may be related to increased contact resistance causing heating in a critical connector which causes increased resistance, which causes enough eventual voltage drop to produce the error -- see http://www.n2nl.net/?p=257 The connector in my radio has a similar 'look' to it for those same 6 pins. I may jumper across to the vertical board it connects to, or replace the pins with gold ones. [Elecraft] Elecraft Firmware 4.25 / MicroHAM / N1MM 11.1.4
I'm participating in the cq160 contest, and am having some difficulty w/the 4.25 firmware, thought I'm not sure it's particular to this version. When I'm using the sub-rx, the setup gets 'into this mode' where where the sub-rx is switched OFF when I stop CQing. Turning on and off the radio sometimes (2 out of 3?) cures it. Stopping N1MM does NOT cure it. Stopping the Microham driver (7.7.1) does NOT cure it every time. Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft Firmware 4.25 / MicroHAM / N1MM 11.1.4
Thanks to all of the responses. Dual RX always on helps with the sub-rx being generally left on. However, the VFO-B window was still 'popping' at each CQ, and with dual-rx-always-on, a noticable 'chunk' is heard in the audio at the tx-to-rx transition. Oh, and the VFO-B window was still being displayed with buttons having no legends on them. With so many configurable features between the K3, N1MM, microham router, etc. I can understand the assumption of pebkac on the part of responders, so I continued to try to solve this. I've been using N1MM for a very long time, and can usually diagnose it pretty well. What I did find that solved the 'VFO-B' window popping with no labels issue was changing (in the configurer tab) from SO2V to SO1V, saving, sending CQ, then immediately switching back to SO2V. Let me repeat that: Changing from SO2V to SO1V, then back to SO2V, should (in theory) produce no different results. However, it did/does. And for now, it solves my issue. If someone else encounters this issue, perhaps this benign suggestion of changing from SO2V to SO1V and back again will help. Re: [Elecraft] (Very OT)Plasma TV noise
I have a neighbor a couple of hundred yards (yes, that far) that away that purchased a plasma approximately 15 months ago; since then, when it's on, I have s7-s9 noise from the AM band through 80m (at various points). I offered to purchase a new LCD display for him to replace it, but he likes the way it looks better than any other. I don't expect to be able to obtain relief short of FCC intervention. It even interferes with vehicle AM radio while driving near his house. While the ARRL recommends to work with your neighbor to try to solve the issue (with ferrites and the like), I don't believe this advice is in tune with today's social conventions, liability laws, last mechanic syndrome, and the like. I would be reluctant to touch anything on anyone else's equipment lest I be responsible for any future real or perceived issues with proper operation. I think the only effective solution would be to 'go nuclear' and get the FCC involved; what I find is that I just operate less. Quite the bummer, because my favorite band over the last few years has been 160m. [Elecraft] K3 RX / Aux Issue with TX
I have K3 #512, with 2nd rcvr. I have the latest release firmware. I have the aux antenna and rx antennas jacks connected together, and fed by switchable receive antennas. My transmit antenna is approximately 120' away, and perpendicular to, the closest receive antenna. While transmitting and using an amplifier on 160m, if I switch to my longest beverage, I see a marked increase in power output (watching the LEDs on the amplifier), as if the transmitter were being influenced by what's coming in on the RX input. I don't hear any COR chatter, however. I suspect feedback coming in from the receive antenna getting into the output and getting amplified (not desirable). I have not had any on the air complaints (yet). Is this known behavior in this configuration? I had already planned out (and have parts on order for) an antenna switching matrix for diversity receive, using a PIN-diode or relay shunt during transmit (for both the COR reason and also to minimize leakage from the RX ports in a multi-multi configuration), so will have a cure soon, but this seems extreme to me. -Brian N9ADG __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] KPA-800 any news at Dayton?
Speculation: Elecraft does great 'smart' things. How about an amp that takes advantage of a CW-preferring user base; tightly integrated with the K3; takes it to the next level: Class E amp, initially supporting only CW, but over time and with some firmware upgrades, and with all of the DSP capability in the K3 with appropriate signaling to the amp, could do SSB and other modes (use K3 dsp to do part of the EER). Smart tuning of the output network for best efficiency, of course, making it plug and play. -Brian N9ADG --- On Mon, 5/18/09, wayne burdick n...@elecraft.com wrote: From: wayne burdick n...@elecraft.com Subject: Re: [Elecraft] KPA-800 any news at Dayton? Re: [Elecraft] K3 receiver desensing on CW during contest
I believe that I encountered this a couple of times while in VP5 last fall... there wasn't a roar of stations, the radio just sort of sat there and 'hummed'. I turned the radio off, then back on, rechecked all of the settings, and kept going. [Elecraft] More Elecraft K3 in the CQ160 - I've got the audio
I used the K3 for the 2nd night (and 2nd morning) of the CQ160 contest. I made MP3 files of my contacts during this period, as well. I uploaded selected Q's to http://bmoran.onehub.com/n9adg You can hear for youself some of the EU and Asia stations as I did from here in the Pacific Northwest. The K3 setup - 90' Inverted L connected to the main antenna; to the 2nd rcvr input, one of three UNterminated beverages -- 700' long at about 70'. 400' long towards EU. 200' towards Asia. I ran with the 400Hz filter most of the time, although I have the 500 and 250 in the radio as well (both receivers). The conditions were unusually good here. In the audio space, the EU signals came from about 2 o'clock, while domestic from about 11 o'clock. It made it easy to run down the band looking for 2 o'clock stations. High in the band, I was reluctant to use the amplifier where the SWR on the vertical is over 2:1. The conditions were so good I worked C6ANM and G4PWA with 100w. I *did* have an issue which I think is operator error -- I wanted to put one beverage on the KXV3 RX input, and another on the KRX3 input. However, with the RX antenna selected, each time I keyed, I faulted my Alpha amplifier. We had a similar setup at VP5W, with Pennants for 160m, however I didn't have this issue. Anyone know what it could be? The audio setup: The setup was the K3 connected directly to a Turtle Beach Amigo external USB sound card, with Audacity (free, with versions for PC and Mac!) recording. I used N1MM. I noted the exact time that I clicked on 'record' in Audacity. At the end of the contest, I exported the audio to MP3 files. I wrote a program that took the ADIF log from N1MM, and using the QSO Time of each contact, extracted the contacts into individual MP3 files. Re: [Elecraft] K3: Keying SB-200 addendum
I am the parts delivery guy :-) there's a great one transistor one resistor circuit for doing this that I have used in the past. I'll bring some relays and back emf diodes too Brian soon to be vp5/n9adg Sent from my iPhone On Nov 22, 2008, at 10:39 AM, Don Ehrlich [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Ralph, A reed relay is a fragile device and may not survive the transient current and voltage spikes present when switching the SB200 relay. I'm at VP5W, and no Radio Shack on the island :-( I did bring a little relay interface, but the reed relay has given up the ghost. Fortunately, we have one op coming from Seattle next week, and he can bring a replacement. It is a borrowed SB-200, otherwise I would have installed a soft-key mod. Re: [Elecraft] Birdie ?
IF you have the USB/Serial adapter, try unplugging that from the K3 AND the computer -- it's powered by the computer. The first one that came with the K3 was S9 in the 160m band; replacing the USB/serial adapter cured it. W6NEK [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi OM, Do you hear the signal with a dummy load connected?
