[Elecraft] Musings about appreciating a particular difference in rx perfomance
Hi, all concerned: The performance that cinched the K3 tight for me years ago was using it on contest-grade antennas 1 to 3 hops from some of those remarkably loud W2-W3-W8 CW DX contest stations on 40-80-160M. Using the 200Hz narrow filter in the K3, I could hear weaker CW sigs, with no keying artifacts, between, eg, W3LPL and K3LR adjacent each other, even though they pinned the meter thru the wider filters. The "comparison" rig, a Yazoo '857, was unusable on contest antennas on contest weekends. Tks to all those who have described mods to clean up the offshore dirtysig clickmachines instead of using the artifacts to hold a run frequency. W8JI.com, for example, has or had mods that clean up the clicks produced by the venerable FT1000 rigs. Re: [Elecraft] PX3 acrylic scratch removal
To all interested: Plain old white tooth-polishing paste, mixed with a small amount of dihydrous monoxide, and patiently rubbed into scratches with a decent moistened chamois, has worked for me on bezels of many kinds, even some auto windows and paint*. Auto polish and clear auto windshield scratch-filler may work with, eg, irreplaceable antique bezels. Hth, and ymmv, naturally. Practice on similar scrap materials first. [Elecraft] K-line Remote Ops
K-line Remote Ops Hi, all concerned: Remote operation (RO) of an ELECRAFT-line station has become my means of escaping the challenge of omnipresent HF noise at my urban home location. However, RO has presented its own peculiar set of adversities. In my case, the control location (CL) is at my home, and the radio location (RL) is at the remote site, and the sites are separated by a 20-25 mile non-line-of-sight path. The internet connection I am using between CL and RL is managed by REMOTERIG 1258 equipments at both ends of the path. The ISPs involved at the CL are Cincinnati Bell Telephone (mainly fiberoptic) and SPECTRUM (mainly cable), and SPECTRUM-only at the RL. Both ISPs seem to have the same problem: remote ops go well for random lengths of time, and then the connection suddenly "drops out". The evolving workaround is, after, say, calling CQ, and tuning in an answer properly, and turning the control off and on to store the proper tuning parameters in case of a dropout, to warn my (mostly CW) contacts of the possibity of a dropout, and, if one occurs, please QRX while I "reset the system". "Resetting the system" consists of turning off the control (K3 or the K3/0 MINI at the CL), waiting some few seconds until the control "beeps", then turning the control back on to see if the system has reset (resumed comms); if it hasn't reset, turning the control off again (and waiting for the beep) and then back on and repeating until the system resumes comms. Lately, it has been taking from 2 to 6 repeats to get the system operating after a dropout. I'm gonna wear out the power switch. Resetting the REMOTERIGs does not appear to cause, help, or otherwise affect the reset process. There are other issues, such as whether REMOTERIG implements all or a select subset of the K3 functions. They can wait. - Brgds, Dave, N3HE Cincinnati OH -- Sent from: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] K3/0 etc remote control system followup
Hi, all concerned: The remote system is now installed and operating in the site pictured on my QRZ page. A 40M inverted-vee dipole at 120 ft apex height does play fairly well. Better antennas and higher power are forthcoming We had a long cold dark thunderstormy late session setting up the SPECTRUM-provided ARRIS router properly. SPECTRUM does not allow access to the router by WAN; only by LAN. Next test will be to take a generic router to the site and see if we can set it up for WAN access. Hi, all concerned: With much help from many sources, for which I am thankful, I now have an operational remote control system: K3/0 to remoterig 1258 in Cincinnati OH to 'net to remoterig 1258 to K3S to antenna in Dayton OH. The remote system has worked fine so far. I've had a number of CW and SSB Q's, mostly on 40M. Re: [Elecraft] [K3] K3/0 Remote Rig QRQ / QSK performance
If you get a 'net speed test from http://www.megapath.com/speedtestplus/ you will see latency and jitter stats. In my experience, they make QSK not an option, running, as they do, 30-60ms latency and 1-30ms jitter. Oh well. I use an MFJ422 (Curtis chip) keyer to get better control over other issues, eg, proper weighting, rather than dot/dash ratio masquerading as weight control, as in the keyer built in to the remoterig box. The delay in sidetone from the far end will drive you nuts trying to send with the delay; I turn the volume down so local sidetone predominates. You might be able to get sorta-QSK at slow hand-key speeds. Hth. Subject: Fw: The Rabbi and the Pope Please be kind enough to remove all names and email addresses if you forward this to others. Use BCC when addressing messages. This says NO to spammers - Thanks! The Rabbi and the Pope Around the year 900, the Pope decreed that all the Jews had to convert to Catholicism or leave Italy. There was a huge outcry from the Jewish community, so the Pope offered a deal: he'd have a religious debate with the leader of the Jewish community. If the Jews won the debate, they could stay in Italy; if the Pope won, all the Jewish people would have to convert or leave. The Jewish people met and picked an aged and wise Rabbi to represent them in the debate. However, as the Rabbi spoke no Italian, and the Pope spoke no Yiddish, all agreed that it would be a silent debate. On the chosen day, the Pope and Rabbi sat opposite each other. The Pope raised his hand and showed three fingers. The Rabbi looked back and raised one finger. Next, the Pope waved his finger around his head. The Rabbi pointed to the ground where he sat. The Pope brought out a communion wafer and a chalice of wine. The Rabbi pulled out an apple. With that, the Pope stood up and declared himself clearly beaten, and said that the Rabbi was too clever. The Jews could stay in Italy. Later the Cardinals met with the Pope and asked him what had happened. The Pope said, Firstly, I held up three fingers to represent the Trinity. The Rabbi responded by holding up a single finger to remind me there is still only ONE God who is common to both our faiths. Then, I waved my finger around my head to show him that God was all around us. The Rabbi responded by pointing to the ground to show that God was also RIGHT HERE with us. I pulled out the wine and host to show that through the perfect sacrifice, Jesus has atoned for our sins, but the Rabbi pulled out an apple to remind me of the ORIGINAL SIN. He beat me at every move, and I could not continue. Meanwhile, the Jewish community gathered to ask the Rabbi how he'd managed to win. I haven't a clue, said the Rabbi. First, he told me that we had three days to get out of Italy, so I gave him the finger. Then he tells me that the whole country would be cleared of Jews, but I told him emphatically that we were staying right here. And then what? asked a woman. Who knows? said the Rabbi. He took out his lunch, so I took out mine. I still have no idea what happened after that. -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/Fw-The-Rabbi-and-the-Pope-tp7572641.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] More on remote operations
Thanks to all who replied to my earlier post. The LL discussion has been especially informative and quite welcome. I do have questions for further discussion, but first, a recap of events. The remote project started simply enough: a K3/100 and RRC-1258 in my local shack in Florida, to the internet, to a remote RRC1258, K3/100 and 40M monoband antenna in Ohio. I handled the logging, dx-clusters, etc., with a Windows Vista computer connected to the miniature USB port on the local RRC-1258. It worked, except turning on the 2nd rx killed TX on all modes. Elecraft factory service diagnosed and fixed that. It all worked. The feedback from the remote K3/100 to the local K3/100 was enough to ensure proper K3/100 and antenna operation at the remote end, no remote computer needed. I got a K3/0, swapped out the local K3/100, and it all *still* worked. I got another remote-end version of the RRC-1258 so I can troubleshoot and test a complete system locally. More on that later. Then . . . life became too short for simple remote projects. At the remote end, an Alpha 87A amplifier, antenna switching, rotator control for 3 rotators, an external power meter, and a WindowsXP computer to run all the control programs, were installed. At both ends, free versions of logmein client/server software are used to log in and run the Alpha, the rotator controls, and the external power meter. A homebrew kluge decodes band data from the K3/100 ACC connector and controls the antenna switching and rotator selection. I wanted to use the KRC2 for decoding and switching, but that's another story. A dit or a cough grin brings the Alpha on frequency. Things are *still* working another grin. Now, the questions for further discussion. Could the computer at the remote end be swapped out for a multi-port serial server and control of the Alpha and rotator transferred to my local shack computer? The serial servers I have found aren't inexpensive; would someone be willing to make a 4-port serial server available for testing the concept, please? Have I overlooked a remote-server capability in equipment mentioned by N3WG? As for the remote-end version of the RRC-1258 I got, it could be used with my K3/100 (into a dummy load only, sri) by any one out there wanting to do live testing or experimenting, with me at this end, to see just what can and can't be accessed or controlled. Playing with macros comes to mind. [Elecraft] Remote operations
Hi, all concerned: I'm in Jacksonville, FL, doing private remote ops using remoterig.com boxes for the radio part (K3/0 controlling K3/100), and logging onto a remote computer desktop (in the midwestern USA) to use Windows apps for RS-232 control of an amplifier and rotator. Things seem to be working fairly well during the short time the system has been up. I'd like to get a thread going with anyone using linux apps and boxes such as the raspberry pi to do remote ops, to see what other ways of doing things are out there. Brgds, Dave, N3HE Full disclosure: I have a time-share at w2re.com, which works *truly fb* for the times I want to get into a shouting contest from a location with different propagation. Re: [Elecraft] Long Messages
Yeh . . . It's not broken, Barry, just doing only the limited tasks its code allows. I had a conversation or two with the individual who (formerly and somewhat regularly) sorted things manually. It's still manual. He wanted to know if I could cruft (sic) some autosort code; I replied, with thanks for the implied flattery, that it's always been above my abilities, much more (less?) my paygrade. For example, I have no idea how to construct effective error traps. You may have noticed my experimenting with the list parameters from time. That's how I concluded that there are more ways to access msgs than the present Nabble code can handle well. I go back and delete my posts after an interval, as well. Paranoia, you know, and, yes, I know they're archived *somewhere. If people restrict themselves to Nabble's live-access mode for reading and posting, the problem will probably morph into server inadequacy. It's just another c l i f f (thud) to work around, heh heh. [Elecraft] [OT] Any M$ Flight Simulator X players out there?
Hi, all concerned: I've been a M$ FS fan since 1995 or 1996. Getting gamer boxes together which run FS-X well has always been challenging - - fast mobos, processors, memory, drives, multiple gpus, screens, yoke, pedals, multi-player, overclocking, and so on. The spinoff is that the boxes generally run ham software effortlessly and flawlessly. Lately, playing the sim while waiting until I can get a station on the air again passes the time pleasantly. [Elecraft] [OT] Microsoft Win7 stuff
Hi, all concerned: Full disclosure: I buy and run generic Microsoft stuff wherever I can, not for the cool ade content, but for the access to the large database of fixes when the stuff breaks. I have no idea if the following works with other stuff. If you liked the earlier windows 7 god mode post, try this one for all the Win7 group policies you ever wanted to see: 1. Left-click the Start button. 2. Type or copy-and-paste gpedit.msc into the search box. 3. Press the ENTER key. Ta-dh. Optional: If you have experienced and want to cure one of my most favorite annoyances, the add-on performance notification I occasionally get at the bottom of my screen: 0. Open Help and read the manual. Heh heh. 1. Enlarge the window to full-screen size. 2. Open either one of the Administrative Templates folders. I usually start with the upper one. 3. Open All settings. 4. Scroll down the Setting column to Disable add-on performance notifications line entry. If you don't see the line entry in the list, look in the other Administrative Templates folder. 5. Open it. 6. Click the Enabled radio button. 7. Click Apply. 8. Close the open windows. 9. Repeat steps 2.-9. for the other Administrative Templates folder; some of the entries appear in both Administrative Templates folders. 10. Reboot the computer. Another one of my favorite annoyances is malware changing settings on the browser's home page. Follow the steps above for the Disable changing home page settings line entry. Hope this is useful. Gol dern it Mitch, I like the concept, *but* it simply ain't PNP, to me, at least. [Elecraft] Stuff to sell
Hi, all concerned: I'm moving into cramped quarters near Jacksonville, FL, shortly after the wx turns warm at north 39 degrees latitude, and I need to continue thinning the herd of ham electronics collected for 60-odd years. Taking pics and posting ads is the usual buy/sell way, and, while I will probably need to do this eventually; however, there are other possibilities. Having audio skype service in my shack has been a handy, -free- way to contact other skype-ers. For example, I'm David.Windisch4 ; download and install the free service if you don't already have it, and gimme a shout. If I enable video, you will see me as well as hear me. If you want to show someone how you did something with or to your eg K3, you can pick up the cam and show him in real time. I've been shown a lot more than I have shown, by some good guys out there. To the chase: I run M$ Vista Ultimate on all my computer boxes. Wanting to get on skype video as well, I bought a n-o-s-i-b Logitech Quickcam 8.4.1 in a hurry, without checking -all- that fine print, and when it arrived, I found out that the drivers are for XP. No biggie; Vista drivers are not available, so I bought a Logitech C910 cam for Vista and W7, which has worked out fine. It has mic/spkrs built in, just like the 8.4.1; no need for a mic-equipped headset. I can have a conversation from the (blue) room without dragging a handset along for the privilege of crooking it between my head and shoulder grin. I'm getting re-acquainted with my grandson, and a -bunch- of non-ham old acquaintances of up to 60 years' standing. To the chase, once more: rather than return the 8.4.1, I'll make it available for a $25 check or mo, shipped to your conus adr. In the near future, I plan on listing stuff to sell here and elsewhere, and you'll be able to see it via skype. [Elecraft] OT: RS232 ports on newest desktop computer motherboards
Nothing new here, I'm sure; I simply was happily reminded of this during research on gaming machine motherboard candidates. The mobo mfrs seem to disguise the naked (9-pin!) RS232 headers on their boards with names like COM, LEGACY, etc. Have a look at your own board's naked headers, if you're wanting to avoid converter-cable problems involving USBx, where x varies from zero to infinity. The header-to-9pin-dogbone-connector ribbon-cable things are available to reach from the header to the card-slot on the case backdrop. Then you can use LP-Bridge to share the port. XACTO the boot carefully if needed to expose a target spot. SAL-MET works on every substance I've attempted, including stainless steel. I've kept the same bottle of the stuff around since the '60s when I bought it. Algalw. Re: [Elecraft] K3. S/No:4250
First whack at at it: Assumptions: signal: 1.860 MHz; local osc: 1.860 + 8.215 = 10.075 MHz In 6 weeks, there are about 36.56016E12 local oscillator cycles, for the top-band frequency given. Each cycle takes the reciprocal of 36.56016E12 in time. Think of the local osc signal as a Slinky on its side with 36.56016E12 turns spread exactly evenly over 6 weeks. I'm thinking that expecting the first and all subsequent cycles not to wander a bit in time-position over a 6-week term is not justifiable. Does that make sense? Re: [Elecraft] K3. S/No:4250
Hi, Eric: What was I thinking?! grin I did this same thing to myself a few years back by messing the offsets up in some bit of experimentation I was doing. Forgot all about it, of course. The fix for my situation then was found in the K3 manual. Here is a quote from p38 of the online K3 Manual: QUOTE You should also use crystal filters with closely matched offsets (CONFIG:FLx FRQ). Otherwise, you may hear a slow phase modulation (similar to a beat note) between the two receivers on some signals. 8-pole filters are already matched (FLx FRQ = 0.00). Elecraft can provide pairs of 5-pole crystal filters with offsets within 40 Hz of each other on request. When setting up FLx FRQ, use the average of the filters’ marked offsets as the value entered for both filters (main and sub). If you enter different offsets, you’ll hear phase modulation, even if the offsets are very close. Re: [Elecraft] Question about forthcoming KAT500
Make yourself a line stretcher, a device with switchable lengths of whatever feedline you use, starting out with, eg, a 1' length, then 2', then 4', and so on. Put it at the tuner output. This can change the Z presented to the tuner to something it can handle without running out of the range of variable adjustment. It's an old workaround. [Elecraft] Mush and my toes
Hi, all concerned: For openers, toes are my Tired (68-year) Old Ear S, replete with tinnitus (you know, constant high-pitched hiss). In any case, a weak single tone appears to change pitch higher to lower as I vary its level from subliminal to comfortable, and lower to higher pitch from comfortable to subliminal. It occurs in both ears. Easiest way to attempt replicating this is to use the MON cw tone function on the K3. The change I hear is not dramatic; best analogue I can think of is a very slight symmetrical chirp. Any one else notice this? Could this syndrome be a contributor to the mush reported by others? I can not remember when I first noticed this; I do notice it on certain single musical notes as well. I update the sheets every time Elecraft announces a price change. The K3 is built from a kit. The main rx has 2.7/0.4/0.2 Kc filters; the 2nd rx has a 2.7 Kc filter. Re: [Elecraft] MCU 4.42 Beta Firmware
Hi, Adrian: I have found: http://www.elecraft.com/K3/K3FAQ.htm to be helpful. Here is a quote regarding NR: QUOTE How does the Noise Reduction work? NR depends on correlation of the present input with previous input. The system does not actually provide Noise Reduction; it provides Signal Selection. In other words, its default is to pass nothing at all. It has to believe there is a signal present, and then it builds a filter, or set of filters, around the spectral components of the signal it thinks is there. Random noise has no correlation, voice has moderate but not perfect (unless you whistle a pure tone) and CW has excellent correlation. As a result, noise is heavily suppressed (no filter is built to pass it), voice is partially suppressed (hence it needs some additional gain to compensate for this effect so the same AF level will produce about the same audio level with a moderate S/N speech signal) and CW is hardly suppressed at all (hence it does not need any gain boost). NR is not recommended in Data Mode. Data is already getting a matched filter in the demodulator. You might lose a few symbols as the NR settles around the signal, and it might suppress a very weak signal that you could otherwise copy. NR in the end is intended for modes you listen to. Hi, all concerned: A wealth of K3 information is at hand when you search K3FAQ from the Elecraft main page searchbox. [Elecraft] Octopus box for station equipment interconnection
Hi, all concerned: Operating computer-assisted digital modes has become easier and simpler, for me at least, with the K3's accessibility features. I started with WSPR, added WSJT-HF, and am looking at other modes, after reading a post here somewhere by K9YC (thanks, Jim, heh heh). Talk about wired wireless: has anyone come up with what I call an octopus box, which would centralize and redistribute all the FP and BP audio and control functions of the K3, in order to reduce or eliminate entirely cable-switching and secondarily the wear-and-tear on the K3's connectors which cable-switching causes? I have looked at W8ZR's lovely offering, and the WestMountain RCA14, and searched further without finding such a comprehensive accessory. Any ideas out there, please? [Elecraft] I just *know* there's an explanation for this K3 behavior
Hi, all concerned: I swl with the K3, and have been trying to make it scan the widest possible spans outside the ham bands. In the process, I have accumulated a list of frequencies (found by tuning first A, then B, from 490 KHz to 30 MHz) where the K3 behave in interesting ways. The A list of frequencies differs somewhat from the B list, and tuning down from 30 MHz to 490 KHz produces slightly different behavior. For example, set A to 8.999 Tap AB Tune A up through 9.000 while observing B Did you hear any relay sounds? Tune A back down through 9.000 while observing B Tune B back and forth through 9.000 while observing A Any help out there with an explanation, please? Re: [Elecraft] K3 memory
Hi, all concerned: I'm glad to report that the problem seems to be cured. I saved the params with the K3 utility. I performed an EE INIT, which by itself eliminated the syndrome. Then I reloaded the saved params. Syndrome returned. To be thorough, I downloaded and re-installed RV4.39 f/w. Hand-fed the params, did the cals in the book, saved another params file, and things seem to be back to normal. I notice that the EE INIT leaves frequency memories intact. Keep those easy fixes coming! Thanks to all who responded. [Elecraft] K3 memory
Hi, all concerned: I've been using v4.39 firmware for a while. In a prior fw version, at least a year ago, using the K3 MemEd, I programmed in, eg, vfo A=7000.00 and vfo B=7030.00, so I can use the MV button as a bandswitch, and scan from A to B. Worked fine afterwards. Didn't have a P3 then; this was a simple workaround. Been using a P3 and bandswitching with the BAND button since, and just now noticed that the MV function doesn't pick up the vfo B memory setting any more when I tried it. Read the memories with the MemEd; all As and Bs were as I set them; resent them anyway; still no vfo B pickup. Have I botched something up? [Elecraft] Looking for a special situation in Jacksonville, FL area
Hi, all concerned: In the next six months or so, I will be moving to an in-law suite in the Jacksonville FL area, exact location unknown. In the last 5-6 years, I've put a decent ELECRAFT-ALPHA station together in Cincinnati. The antenna system can be seen on qrz.com, googleearth, and bingmaps.com. I plan on disassembling the station and moving everything but the tower base to temporary storage in FL Then I will be looking for an op, in or near Jax, who could become interested in a special situation. In a nutshell, remote control technology has progressed rapidly lately, and the op for whom I'm looking would be willing to host a station using my equipment, tower, and antennas, in return for sharing operating time with me, remoted in from my in-law suite. There are many, too many, details to share here. If you have serious interest, or know someone who does, be kind enough to contact me via telephone or *private* email, thanks. Brgds.
