Re: [Elecraft] Connecting PC to K3S
Whether the WinKeyer is necessary depends on the logging program for sending CW. N3FJP's ACLog CANNOT use the same virtual serial port to control the rig and send CW like N1MM+ can. ACLog MUST have a separate (like the WinKeyer) port for CW. OTOH, DXLab Suite (and others) is able to accomplish the same magic as N1MM+. You have to know/understand the software requirements/capabilities as well as the rig's specifications today to put a shack together and make it work. A critical element of this is to RTFM for all hardware and software, not the American Male Way. 73, Bill, K8TE -- Sent from: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Re: [Elecraft] PSK31 with a KX2
Times change. ClubLog publishes a weekly summary of uploaded DX contacts at: https://clublog.org/dxreport.html. For this past week, PSK was 0.11% of all those contacts. This is a representative sample (not scientific) of activity by those who use ClubLog. FT8/4 made up about 61%, SSB & CW just short of 38%. This gives us a pretty good idea of where to find the activity. The summary includes other modes along with other information. You may not like it, but it is a close approximation of reality. RTTY fans (0.69% in this summary) can't believe there are so few operating RTTY, except during contest weekends. If one picks a mode with such small numbers, one can't expect to find much activity. I use multiple radios, one of which is dedicated to FTn. This allows me to make CW/SSB contacts while the other radio is making FTn contacts. FTn has filled in a lot of band-slots and even States on 12m toward 9BWAS for me, with little skill and minimal effort. If one pays attention to FTn details, one can make even more contacts there. I get tired of clicking. I don't like to move my hands off the home keys. 73, Bill, K8TE -- Sent from: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] K4 Panadaptor Display
Many of us who contest a lot will tell you the radio is NOT the focus, the monitor with the logger and keyboard. My primary K3 sits next to my primary monitor with the P3 on the other side of the K3 and an external, separate monitor above the P3 for a lager waterfall, useful when chasing DX operating split. Flexibility and ergonomics are important elements of good shack design, especially if we expand the shack beyond one radio and a laptop. However, even for FD, I assert the laptop should be directly in front of the operator who should do the operating and logging with the radio within easy reach to the side of the laptop or monitor/keyboard. Rarely is there a need to touch the radio, even for changing frequencies/bands or modes. A second op can help and learn, but should not do the logging, regardless of mode. There is a big difference between six folks operating a radio for several hours and making several hundred contacts vs. one who makes 1600+ FD contacts in 24! The latter's fingers seldom leave the keyboard. Placing more than one "window", regardless of source, in a single monitor requires only a switcher with multiple inputs and the ability to send them in combination to a monitor. You may not have to buy a new monitor although you'll need to review specifications carefully to determine if a new monitor or a switch is for you. And, be ready to test the monitor, switch, and input devices! My Geochron will not work through a switch I bought although the TiVo will even though both work well directly to the two HDMI inputs on the TV, just one at-a-time. The reason remains hidden thus far with bigger fish to fry in the shack. 73, Bill, K8TE -- Sent from: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] K3 Sub Receiver
It is a simple process to review firmware updates, and when appropriate, copy and paste an update into the PDF version of the manual in Acrobat Reader, and then save that file with the updates. Then, when one searches for a question, the annotated manual has both the then (manual's publishing date) current text plus the updated annotation. BTW, the "Big Three" do not allow updating their PDF manuals while Elecraft does. Thanks Wayne, Eric, and all those who allow this! RTFM also means keeping the "M" current! Re: [Elecraft] K3S - Set Mode Across All Bands?
While it might take as long as a minute, I have each of the M1-M4 memories programmed for for modes and frequencies by band, one of them being a CW and SSB frequency for County Hunters on each band. I used the Elecraft Frequency Memory Editor to accomplish this. Now, I can start at 160m, hit the M>V button, then M1, and very quickly have the CW frequency in VFO A and the SSB frequency in VFO B for each band. With a little thought and organization, the Frequency Editor is a handy tool for such things as using a segment for contest frequencies, SOTA, CH, etc. Those Elecraft designers are whitty! Re: [Elecraft] KPA500+KAT500 interfacing.
From the KAT500 manual: When the KAT500 is used with an Elecraft K3 transceiver, the K3 can be configured to cause the KAT500 to follow changes in the K3’s VFO frequency during receive. This requires frequency, not band data. Tuning the K3 big knob results in a change of tuning solutions for antennas that require those solutions. After stopping tuning for a brief moment, one can hear the relays change. 73, Bill, K8TE -- Sent from: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] Antennas and Output Power - KPA-1500
No. This is not the solution for what Pete describes and for what I and others also experience. Switching antennas, even antenna ports, often gives very different power output numbers for the same drive levels from the K3/K3S, even when appropriate and acceptable tuning solutions are found. Using an external antenna switch on a single KPA1500 antenna port can be problematic with the KPA1500 in cases where different tuning solutions are necessary for different antennas. Currently, there is no means to tell the KPA1500 to use a different solution other than "trial and error" which means providing RF on the "new" antenna, allowing the KPA1500 to find the proper (trained) solution, change to that solution, and proceed. At full power, this process can result in an alarm which disables the amplifier, inconvenient in the heat of battle (contest). I have also noted that after not using the KPA1500 for a "long time" which could be 15-30 minutes, power output can exceed alarm settings (well over 1500 Watts). And when used some more, the power output decreases to 1500 without any exciter adjustments. This means the KPA1500 gain figure seems to increase after "resting" and decreases with use. "Perfect" antennas that are always 50 Ohms and non-reactive won't cause these symptoms. I hope someday to have those. 73, Bill, K8TE -- Sent from: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500 Using Multiple Antennas With the Tuner
I too have the same issue. I worked with Dick on this, but there is no solution currently available when using an external antenna switch (necessary with more than two antennas) with the KPA1500. Unfortunately, there is no way for the KPA1500 to tell the K3/K3S to use a different drive level, even when using ANT1 and ANT2 on the same band, but with two different antennas that require different tuning solutions. My (not yet implemented) initial solution is to use a macro for band changes that will drop the drive level based on previously-determined data when selecting a new band/antenna. The long term solutions is a computer (Pi, Arduino, PC, etc.) with the appropriate tables with the data entered from empirical testing. I only wish the ability (firmware and hardware) had been included in the original design. I'll take my KPA1500 to Lubbock next weekend for the CQ WW DX SSB Contest. I reconfigure the station's antenna switching to use ANT1 and ANT2 in the KPA1500. I carefully choose antennas by band so the two ports use the same antennas by band and train the KPA1500 tuner appropriately. The KPA1500 and 2x8 antenna switch follow the IC-7610 band and frequency data. The hardest part is prying the KPA1500 out of the station owner's hands so I can take it back home! Anyone with near perfect antenna systems (minimal tuning solutions needed) won't have this problem. Maybe I'll get there someday? As Rosana Rosanadana used to say: "It's always something." (not the same without Gilda Radner voicing it!) 73, Bill, K8TE P.S. I have also noticed a big (300-400 Watts) difference in output after a "long" pause in use (15-30 minutes) along with the difference between antenna solutions on the two ports for the same frequency. -- Sent from: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] [OT] Fires
My heart goes out to Alan and Bob for their losses. Thankfully, they got out OK. Walter points to a scientific fact (so many dead trees) that explains the huge fuel source available to burn. That is not a "normal" situation. We face similar challenges in NM where we have experienced drought and bark beetle infestation for many years. We're hoping to avoid "the big one" that starts in the mountains east of Albuquerque and takes out all the TV/FM/LMR stations along with ham repeaters on Sandia Crest. I helped clear brush and small trees from another ham's property when a fire (human-caused like most) was approaching his property several years ago. We moved all valuables from his home to his metal "barn" in case the fire got to that point. Fortunately, it stopped within a mile. Two other hams in those mountains were not as fortunate. We have sent NM fire crews to CA again this year. Like COVID-19, this subject is now too often linked to politics instead of science. As members of a science-based avocation, let's keep the discussion (probably too long already) based on science. 73, Bill, K8TE -- Sent from: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] Noisy radios
A neighbor who lives just 300 yards away purchased and now operates an IC-7300. When he operates 40m CW, the phase noise occurs across the entire 40m band on my K3 with the upgraded synthesizer. You could never use an IC-7300 for Field Day on the same band with other radios. OTOH, we had three K3's (prior to the upgraded synthesizer on 20m simultaneously. We only knew the others were active if we tuned to within 20 kHz or so of them. I was the the SSB team captain and had no problem on 20m as long as we didn't get "near" the GOTA station when it was on the same band. This was with the same physical distance I know face the IC-7300. Another IC-7300 over a mile away is very broad (20-30 kHz) when operated on 40m SSB. I often hear splatter 40 kHz up the band! While I tell people the IC-7300 is a great package for the price, I also tell them not to use it with big antennas or physically near other radios. I do the same Rick. However, when new firmware comes out, I update my manuals appropriately. Elecraft allows that, unlike Icom, Kenwood, or Yaesu. I wonder why? Refreshing my own "firmware" is much more challenging, especially for things not refreshed by use. Many questions on this reflector are already answered in the Elecraft manuals. Watching my P3, I find many, many SSB signals over-driven with, I'll bet, ALC way out of range, even on an occasional Elecraft rig. When I send them a screenshot, or mention it on-the-air, frequently, the operator can't find the ALC reading. RTFM! Re: [Elecraft] KPA-1500 SWR fault above 700-800 watts on 160m
That is not true, except at full power. The manual clearly states power levels at 10:1, 5:1, and 4:1 VSWR's for different frequency ranges. RTFM is a wonderful acronym to follow. I'm always surprised to read "I think..." "I recall..." and similar posts to answer a poster's question. Most of us are U.S.A. males, no offense to those who aren't. As such, our DNA has been irradiated by past (not Cycle 24) solar cycles and we no long see the need to read manuals. A friend of mine bought an IC-7300 because he could operate it without reading the manual. He has since read some of the manual and uses features that make his signal (usually weak with a 12 ft. high antenna) more copyable. I am working on his further conversion. May the mask be with you! Re: [Elecraft] UPDATE KPA1500 on 160M
Nowhere has there been a mention of what VSWR the tuner sees, only the result of its match which is 2.5:1. That means the VSWR it sees is beyond its capability to tune properly and run full power. This information is available on the KPA1500 panel display. It will also state the maximum allowable power output. What are those values? I suspect the VSWR is quite high and the allowable power well below 1,500 Watts. It's likely you're expecting more power-handling capability than the BALUN, either one, can handle. When one writes "quickly" that is interpreted differently by all those who read it. Obviously, 20 to 30 seconds is not "quickly", at least to me, but a very good indications of something overheating, but not instantly. The latter could lead toward a very different conclusion. My current (pun intended) conclusion is don't run over 800 Watts on 160m! That is about the same level you run with your other amplifier without a failure, maybe, if you don't run it too long at that level. I'm glad you concluded it's an antenna system problem. BTW, W8JI has written about this antenna and recommends an 80-20% ratio, rather than the typical 67-33% ratio. He has modeled it for various bands on his web site. I don't know why the common 67-33% values are used when someone has shown there is a better choice. Re: [Elecraft] Inverted L for 160 meters
It's refreshing to read something based on science! All of the anecdotes are interesting, but nothing more. I would not jump on any of them without reading scientific documentation comparing them directly to a half-wave, flat top dipole at a half wavelength high, or as high as possible and specified. Jim's point about the NVIS myth is well taken. Most of the "literature" is bunk and with little to no backing in science. I strongly promote using WSPRLite on two antennas simultaneously to demonstrate the new antenna's performance over time. Those results have meaning. I worked an Italian station on 20m SSB using my KX3 at five Watts into a mobile screwdriver antenna. that was in 2016 near the second peak of Cycle 24. Based on how others assert "This antenna works." I should pull my dipoles down (283 DXCC entities from NM, mostly during Cycle 24) and just use the mobile antenna. Right! BTW, my friend Alan, K0BG, calls "WORKs" an acronym for "WithOut Real Knowledge." He is probably right 80-95% of the time about that. So it worked, but that doesn't make it good, better, or even worse. Ward Silver, N0AX, wrote: "The best antenna is one that is in the air." Kevin is trying to erect an antenna better than what he has now. Anecdotes won't help him, IMHO. 73, Bill, K8TE > A low horizontal antenna has its place, for local work especially out to > a few hundred miles reliably. Horses for courses and all that. That's an urban myth. A low horizontal antenna is very lossy, and has much weaker radiation at ALL angles, including high ones. The origin of the myth is that ARRL Antenna plots set the peak radiation to 0dB. But when plot the vertical field strength for all heights on the same scale, you get the family of curves beginning with slide 13. Study http://k9yc.com/VertOrHorizontal-Slides.pdf There is an optimum range of heights for high angle radiation, and it isn't low. Slide 19 shows that the optimum height is about 55 ft on 80M, and high angle drop by only 2 dB at 90 ft. Divide those heights by 2 for 40M. 73, Jim K9YC -- Sent from: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] K3 going expeditionary
As is often the case, connecting directly to the battery for the negative lead is misunderstood. In today's world, it depends. The Battery Monitoring System (BMS) is a big deal in most of today's vehicles. To function properly, we should NOT CONNECT to the battery's negative terminal. That used to be good advice and may be bad today. See: http://www.k0bg.com/wiring.html. As Alan, K0BG, states, "It WORKs." often means "WithOut Real Knowledge. Not all advice on this reflector is current or correct. Caveat emptor. BTW, using vehicle wiring for a 100 Watt radio can lead to losing the vehicle due to fire! I have seen the pictures. Re: [Elecraft] New antenna works!
Kevin is on to something when he compares antennas instantly which I assume from his description. Most antenna anecdotes state something like "It works much better than...I had up previously. But, both antennas aren't up and in use at the same time. My good friend Alan, K0BG, puts it very well. "WORKs is an acronym which means WithOut Real Knowledge." Why? Because the performance assertions are not comparative like one gets when using two WSPRLit transmitters on two antennas at the same time over time. Those data will show which antenna performs better and how consistently better one antenna is than the other. In every case when I compare antennas, they always out-perform one or two others at some point in time. But, one of the three performs better on certain bands at certain times, most, but not all of the time. This past Saturday, I frequently noted one dipole out-performed the other on a specific station at a specific time, regardless of the band (40m and 20m). I had callers answer my CQ's that I could not here on the other dipole and that was true for both dipoles most of the time. They would "change places" at different times for the same paths. Being able to instantly switch between antennas (K3 with internal ATU) helped me make more contacts than if I had just one of those dipoles, both about the same height, but at nearly right angles to each other. When I had a vertical in the air, it would sometimes out-perform both dipoles over the same paths. Every antenna "WORKS", even a dummy load with imperfect coax. Some antennas generally out-perform others. Don't tell me yours works better than mine without scientific proof, not anecdotes. W8JI has done a lot of antenna modeling and on-the-air comparisons in making assertions about antennas' performance. I recently read his statement about end-fed wires being a cult today. He goes on to explain their failings don't appear when using QRP and with no other antenna available for comparisons. As N0AX wrote, "The best antennas is the one that is up in the air." or similar words. He also wrote the half wave dipole is simple and it works well and makes the best first choice. I would add, the higher the better until it's a half wavelength high. K9YC has done modeling that points this out and debunks most of the NVIS myths that abound in which users state we need to lower our antennas for NVIS. I use end-fed wires when appropriate--SOTA, POTA, and on county lines were simplicity and rapid deployment matter more than RFI, most of which I can mitigate or ignore. I use dipoles at home and most are resonant. I also use WSPRLite to get scientific performance data before I assert they WORK or which one is better. As I wrote above, I will keep both those dipoles because they both out-perform the other at times. As my antenna farm grows, one dipole will remain as my measurement "standard" so I can truly say my new antenna (nothing short and shiny) out-performs my dipole. And yes, neither is perfect so I use a tuner when necessary on certain bands/frequencies. 73, Bill, K8TE -- Sent from: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] Matching resonant antennas
Lyn, How do you measure your antenna's performance? In many cases, not necessarily yours, antenna performance seems to be based on countries worked, achieving WAS/DXCC, "It's way better than last year's antenna.", or "I worked Pitcarin Island last week." None of these "measures" are meaningful. I am a big proponent of having a half-wave dipole as one's "standard" antenna then using the RBN, WSPRLite, etc. to capture same-time data on the performance of each antenna over time. In other words, to say one's antenna works, is meaningless. To say it works well is also meaningless. To say it works better than...can have some value and perhaps even meaning. 73, Bill, K8TE -- Sent from: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] K4 Issue
I have a neighbor who lives about 500 ft away with a new IC-7300. I have told many people the IC-7300 is an interesting radio for $900-1,000, but it ain't no K3! For example, several years ago we had three K3 transceivers on 20m--CW, SSB, and GOTA. They were about 500 feet apart from each other. Unless we tuned within 5-10 kHz from another, we didn't know the other two were on the air until somebody turned of the SSB radio's power supply and the battery ran low (IMD). OTH, if my neighbor is on 20m or 40m with his barefoot IC-7300, I know it on my K3 (new synthesizers). He's on CW and I'm on SSB--I know he's on. His rig's phase noise covers the entire band! Fortunately, unless I pick the second harmonic, I don't hear him disturb 20m when he's on 40m. While good by itself and not on big antennas, especially during a contest, the IC-7300 will work for many hams. I experienced similar issues with my K3 and an IC-7600 several years ago at a different FD site. This weekend I head to Lubbock with my K3 to operate CW at a 2E station with an IC-7610. We will NOT operate on the same band! I will bring bandpass filters for both radios just in case. Listen for KS5Z, three old friends/farts having a fun, safe weekend. I hope many of you do the same. Re: [Elecraft] K3S dead after attempted firmware update - Fixed
Having worked in IT, I can tell you professional IT organizations test patches before deploying them. Regarding Windows 10 Home use, you can delay patches now (a recent update). Finally, for a long time, you have been able to prevent Windows 10 from updating drivers which can lead to COM port number changes: https://www.minitool.com/news/disable-automatic-driver-updates-win-10-009.html. Windows and our computers are just like any tool or even a piece of radio gear. it behooves us to learn how to use those tools and to stay current with updates to them. These tools are more complex than hammers and just as dangerous in un-trained/educated hands. There is plenty of information (much of it correct) available with a quick Google search. Before I spend a weekend or just a day contesting, I always check for Windows Updates. If one is available, I download and install it on ONE computer, test it, and if acceptable, do the same on my other computers. I also check all of my antennas and the rest of my station's systems. They are all tools of the "trade." 73, Bill, K8TE -- Sent from: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500 power per frequency bin
I am right there with Hank, and probably a lot of others. It's worse when one has an external antenna switch which the KPA1500 can't sense so it's necessary to provide low power from the K3 to avoid a fault because of the different antenna and the tuner can provide the appropriate (already trained) match. Also, switching between ANT1 and ANT2 with different conjugate matches often requires different power levels from the K3 (or other radios). So, for operator "convenience" I find it necessary to set the K3 power level at the lower point to avoid faults. Sadly, there is now way for the KPA1500 to tell the K3 (or K4) what's going on and therefore what to do. I'm attempting to become smarter with an Arduino and, hopefully, figure out how to automate this. It requires a look-up table to determine frequency, antenna, tuning solution, for setting the exciter drive level. So far, I can spell Arduino correctly four out of five times. That is progress! Next, I will plug it in. BTW, if one's antennas demonstrate little to no reactance and a 50 Ohm match, this is not an issue. That only happens in the movies and on TV (Last Man Standing? who needs a K-Line, obviously). 73, Bill, K8TE -- Sent from: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] Field Day
If you have operated FD recently (past multiple decades), you know there are NOT enough stations operating during those "extra" three hours to make it worth while. Of course, if you have plenty of beer and ice, I guess you could stay at the rig until there isn't anyone else left to work. That could be past 2100 UTC since, it appears, many don't read the rules/FAQ. By 1800 UTC, I am ready to stop operating, have a (one) beer, tear down, and listen to CW coming from the swamp cooler at home. I guess I won't need to tear down this year since I'll enter in Category E, probably. I will still hear the CW in the swamp cooler. The average life span for any "permanent" setup in my station is approximately 24 hours or until I read the next Elecraft Digest. I suppose that won't qualify for set-up time in Category E. Wait! I need to check the rules! 73, Bill, K8TE -- Sent from: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500 RFI on 10 Meters
My finding was similar to Scott's. I noticed between one and two S-units increase in noise on a 10m dipole located within 40 ft. of the shack. I also noticed the same on 15m with a 40m dipole at the same distance. I added type 31 ferrite snap-on cores to the 240 VAC, the "high" DC voltage, and control lines at the power supply. Now, the noise is back to the ambient level which is still too high. Now I can copy another level or two of signals I couldn't copy as well prior to adding the ferrite cores. BTW, that previous level of noise disappeared when I powered the amplifier down and not the PSU. 73, Bill, K8TE -- Sent from: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] KX3/KX2 remote for FD
Let's see Bob. Where are the results posted? In the Contest section of the ARRL web site. How are they listed? By category and total score. Who manages FD? Those who manage ARRL contests? Are there rules like a contest? Yes. Do groups compete against other groups? Yes. Is there more to FD than making QSO's? Yes, somebody told me there was while I was searching through the results database. Is saying "Please copy." OK? Not if you want to make a lot of contacts. Is FD a great, wonderful, fun way to learn about contesting? Yes! Are the words "Not a contest." spoken in jest? Yes, a large percentage of the time. Is it fun to win a category? Oh yeah! Is it fun to come in 4th overall? Oh baby it is! Is it great to have all Elecraft gear at FD? No, it's a necessity to do well if you have more than one rig. I have been (unwillingly) to the Dark Side and prefer the ability to have three rigs on the same band, two of them on SSB, and not experience interference until moving to within 10 kHz. Will I miss competing with a group of friends? I certainly will! Will I still do FD? Is there anything else to do the fourth weekend of June? Will many individuals do it differently than last year? I hope so! Follow your State's Department of Health orders and stay healthy. This pandemic is real. It is not a contest that anyone should take stupid, unsafe steps to play. The listings are sad and we are nowhere close to beating this thing! And please stop whining about the spirit of FD. We're in the middle of a pandemic and you're worried about people making too many contacts or operating differently. Stay within FD rules, get on-the-air somehow, and make as many contacts as you can. If really necessary, enjoy some good food and drink, but not in mass gatherings however your State/County/City defines them. Stay healthy! HamVention 2021 is around the corner. Re: [Elecraft] CM500 headset on K3S and KX3?
I have used the CM500 for many years. I have replaced the ear muffs with Koss's version. However, like Grant, I bought a RS60CF and have not looked back. Unlike Joe, I find them very comfortable, even after many hours in a contest. They cut out extraneous noise very well. The K3 TX equalizer provides excellent audio response. I use a pair of CM500's for portable work. So far, I've not had to use the spare set in spite of a lot of use and abuse. When we do Field Day for real again, I will likely use the RS60CF set to cut down on the inevitable background chatter the CM500 doesn't. 73, Bill, K8TE -- Sent from: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] Power supply V drop - was poor CW on K3S
This is a huge misperception that is very dangerous! If the power supply (PSU) doesn't have an in-line fuse on the 12VDC, then you're taking a grave chance should a short occur in the cable between the PSU and radio. Ask folks who have set their cars on fire. Like a battery, there should be a fuse at the PSU to open should the 12VDC supply lead short. Some will whine about Voltage drop, but safety is far more important to me. Re: [Elecraft] K4
Ralph, You answered your own question although part of your description doesn't logically make sense. If the chain link fence is the source of the mixing, how can your FT-1000 out-perform your K3? If the mixing occurs in the fence (very possible at a dissimilar junction), then that junction generates an unwanted signal in the bands you use. Only disconnecting the antenna from the transceiver will solve that problem. The filter protects the transceiver's front end and has no impact on the fence's mixing capability. I used to work for the company that operates our local (770-KKOB) 50 KW electron emitter. It is line-of-sight from our home. I use a high pass filter in between the antenna and K3 to reduce its impact on 160m. The "standard" MFJ antenna analyzer won't work properly with that much RF in the neighborhood. Living in New Mexico, rust is not a big problem for chain link fences or cars/trucks. However, the 50 KW transmitter is a huge problem for many devices, especially telephones, in the neighborhood. We used to provide a lot of phone line ferrite filters before cell phones became so abundant. It's difficult to solve problems without understanding their causes. Re: [Elecraft] Electrolytic Capacitor failure
Having meters will protect my radio? I doubt that assertion. Most radios today remain connected to their power supplies even when turned off, much like a computer. In the case of a K3, it is always connected to the power supply, even when off. So unless we don't connect the K3 to the power supply until checking the power supply's Voltage, a Voltmeter on the power supply wouldn't do much good. Additionally, when operating the K3 for hours on end, like in a contest, who watches the power supply Voltmeter? I certainly don't. I don't know who would. Instead, I use one of those power distribution devices that shuts down Voltage to the equipment should it rise too high. 73, Bill, K8TE -- Sent from: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Re: [Elecraft] Copying CW at high speeds
CW scared me to death after my traumatic experience with the FCC in Syracuse NY in 1960. I had only several weeks to practice since I had been in HK4 as an exchange student for a long Summer where I operated SSB on a friend's DX-100 and HQ-170. I passed the General, but probably with one or no characters to spare. At 14 years old, that made a lasting impression! With the advent of vanity calls, I chose to dump WA8WWM for K8TE in the mid-1970s. I also passed the 1st Class Radiotelephone in Detroit and the 2nd Class Radiotelegraph exam in Lubbock a couple years later. I though the plain text for the latter was 22 wpm and cypher groups at 18. It was a long time ago. CW for me went by the wayside until FD 2012 when I had to fill-in an empty two-hour CW slot, I the SSB Team captain. With trepidation, I started running. With about 150 calls in the log, I decided it was possible to operate CW and not achieve a higher heart beat than QSO rate. Since then, I have used LCWO.net for callsign practice. I can copy at 75% accuracy above 40 wpm now. I have a friend who listens to CW at the gym or on the road and has improved his speed significantly. I have yet to feel a desire to rag chew. But I can easily copy my callsign in DX pileups well above the infrequent 35 wpm speed. I am proof that practice matters a lot! My purpose is to encourage the synapses to transfer callsigns and exchanges from sound to the keyboard. I don't have time to rag chew in CW and rarely find time for extended SSB QSO's. Still, I really enjoy chasing DX, POTA, SOTA, Counties, contesting, etc., especially on CW where contacts (usually) are brief and to the point, to say nothing of the difference in FD (no "Please Copy", Bill, AE6JV). If one takes the time to research information on any radio, and can throw out the invalid/meaningless anecdotes, it is relatively easy to choose a radio based on facts and commensurate with one's "needs." Re: [Elecraft] THE FUTURE OF OUR HOBBY
And for you "new" hams, $150 today was worth $35.02 in 1970. I did a presentation that included what is available today and what was available 20 years ago along with real Dollar comparisons. Most (old--you define that) hams rarely consider inflation in their assumptions, much less what "young" people spend on hobbies. Worse yet, most hams (those who have been licensed less than 10 years) have no idea about the demographics of those licensed under 10 years. The ARRL paid big bucks to study this and our slowly declining membership. If you pay attention to Howard Mickel's columns, QST's content, and even the ARRL web site, you can see the difference. Informed members know ARRL will publish a new magazine beginning next month. It's directed to the less than 10 years-licensed hams who are ill-served by most ham radio clubs today. Effective and more wide-spread mentoring, more welcoming clubs, and related approaches that get the under 10 years-licensed hams engaged in the hobby (on-the-air, especially on HF) is what's needed. For most of us, the biggest challenge we face related to our hobby's future is easy to find. It's reflected in the mirrors in front of us. If I have insulted you because you're meeting the needs of the under 10 years-licensed cohorts, great! That means you are among the few who are helping others and not yourselves. Although, I get great enjoyment out of sharing the joy of this hobby with others, regardless of age, time in the hobby, and experience. Our (Duke City Hamfest in Albuquerque) approach to this challenge was to launch HF University nearly four years ago. Intended for the new General or Tech, the majority of participants have been Extra Class licensees, many of whom have had little HF experience. The only thing that tires them, especially those who return each year, is my Elecraft Kool-Aid. Sorry, but I can't help that. Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 auto trainer
I have not Andy, but I have, and often use, used K3_EZ for the K3 internal tuner to measure/graph VSWR across an entire band. I suggest this capability belongs in the KAT500 and KPA1500 firmware, if it can fit. I have enough tedium in my life. Automating this training is a valid need. Accomplishing it without an external device would be very welcome! If it must be external due to insufficient firmware memory availability, so be it. I know how to spell Arduino and hope to know more eventually. I hope you will share what you are able to accomplish regarding this tedious task. 73, Bill, K8TE -- Sent from: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] K3 Monitor on Line Output
We in the Elecraft world are very fortunate in that they allow us to update our electronic (PDF) manuals, unlike the big three Japanese manufacturers. Open the manual in Adobe Acrobat Reader, select the text box icon (third from the right), highlight a portion of the text you want to annotate, and then you can paste (or type) in the firmware update text you want. Then, you'll see an icon by that text which, if you cursor over it, will display the pasted text. After you have pasted all the appropriate firmware update text into the manual, save it with a different filename. I simply add "Annotated" so I know that copy is the annotated version. I copy that file to all my computers and to a thumb drive so I have the latest version available at all times. BTW, the new text will appear when you search (CNTRL+F) the annotated file. I find this simpler, cleaner, and more efficient than updating the paper manuals. I did the latter (a lot) during my 26-year USAF career! I'm stuck with using paper for the IC-7610 I won at the Dayton Contest Dinner in May--thank-you Icom! 73, Bill, K8TE -- Sent from: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] KPA-1500 wish list
Another issue not explicitly mentioned is using an external antenna switch with different conjugate matches already trained withing the KPA1500 ATU. Those different matches mean when one selects a "new" (different) antenna than already selected on a particular frequency (same band or not), the KPA1500 doesn't know this fact until power is applied. Then, due to a high VSWR, the amplifier faults. With just two antenna ports on the KPA1500, there are only two quickly accessible tuning solutions per frequency if using both ports. If using only one port and an external antenna switch, a common choice in many stations, finding the correct tuning solutions can't be done fast enough to prevent a fault. As alluded to in previous messages on this topic, perhaps the solution, unfortunately, is an external box that could contain the appropriate data so that, when a new frequency/antenna combination, that has a previously tuning solution, is selected, the external box will tell both the KPA1500 ATU to select the appropriate solution and transceiver to make appropriate power level adjustments, both PRIOR to actually transmitting. This is done (approximately, but with no power level changes) by the KAT500 in selecting one of the three antenna ports and the appropriate tuning solution. This assumes no other antenna choices on each of the three ports for the same frequency. The KPA1500/K3S combination is (currently) not sufficiently "smart" to accomplish this. Of course, if we had "perfect" antennas that provided resonant matches on all bands/frequencies, we wouldn't be discussing this. If we had those, we wouldn't need the KPA1500 ATU either. 73, Bill, K8TE -- Sent from: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft SSB net and time change to Standard time
Use something like Google's Calendar. Create reminders using UTC for ham radio and other things that occur based on UTC. And, unless you use your memory instead, you'll always get a reminder at the correct time, regardless of your local time. It's too bad so many time keeping devices account for this no longer functional time change. If we discarded the concept, it would take decades to lose all the stuff that changes automatically. Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500 RFI on 12m
Most hams cut their antenna length for lowest VSWR which is often NOT the resonant point. Resonance occurs when XsubL equals XsubC. That means there is no reactance at one frequency. Impedance varies greatly with height above ground. The greatest radiation occurs at resonance which, again, is often not at the lowest VSWR. This is why a good antenna analyzer that displays both VSWR and reactance is so helpful. Web sites abound with advice to cut the antenna for lowest VSWR. Like politics, the truth is difficult to find and, apparently, often hard to believe. And, anecdotal statements about how an antenna works (WORK--WithOut Real Knowledge--K0BG) often has little to do with its comparative performance. Too few of us use real data (like WSPRLite) to compare antennas and arrive at conclusions based on comparative data. I liked the Pacificon theme this year: "The Science of Radio" That didn't always apply in some of the presentations, but fortunately did in most I attended. 73, Bill, K8TE -- Sent from: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500 RFI on 12m
What is a big deal is using the KPA1500 on 60m unless you're using a dummy load or paper clip for an antenna. "The 60 meter band has special restrictions including the restriction of radiated power relative to the gain of a half-wavelength dipole antenna which is 100 watts PEP." We need to keep 60m, not loose it due to abusing its power limit. The KPA1500 tuner can achieve solutions beyond VSWR's of 3:1, but only if running reduced power. Re: [Elecraft] Tony CW transceiver for socially isolated kids
While getting somethings on my shopping list at Wired Communications yesterday, I found a $5.00 40m transmitter kit. It is a through-hole kit with a pair of transistors and a crystal on 7023. The card on the box indicated it runs 150 mW, reminding me of a similar transmitter I built with two transistors for 80m. This kit with similarly inexpensive receiver could fill the bill as Wayne describes it. Yes, kids, with the right Elmers, get a kick out of this kind of thing. No, I'm not writing about my experiences in the 1960's, but those with Scouts and other kids in the last ten years. I watched Eric spend a lot of time yesterday demonstrating the K4 to what looked to me to be a 13-year-old who is already licensed, probably thanks to his dad who also has a ticket. The typical grumpy old ham who operates 75m each morning and evening (let the flames begin) is not the one who will spark enthusiasm in anyone, but especially kids, for ham radio. Heck! They're the same ones who ignore visitors to their own club meetings. We need ideas like Wayne's, but more importantly, enthusiastic, active, engaged hams who are willing to share their time and love of our avocation with others. Most new hams today are middle-aged and come to us via EMCOMM. We need to share the mystery and excitement of HF with them and not belittle them for purchasing their cheap HT’s but help program them and invite them to visit our shacks to work some DX and enter a QSO party. Time for a shower and maybe breakfast before the day begins at Pacificon. It looked busy yesterday and will likely be busier today. Monday, we'll stop by Watsonville to deliver a damaged KPA500 and K3 from my RV trip to and from Dayton earlier this year. Re: [Elecraft] KPA-1500 failing on 160...AGAIN!
For those with insulated verticals, the potential gradient is about 100 V/meter. That varies with humidity and altitude. But, you get the picture. In dry climates like here in NM, this is a big deal for commercial broadcast AM antennas. Even with the transmitter shut down, unless there is a "DC ground" on the antenna, one shorts the tower to ground first prior to climbing on or off the tower. This was a big deal when the local power company rescued three folks from our 770 tower after it "captured" their hot air balloon! Bleeding off static electricity is a big deal. Wind blowing dust, snow, or rain can generate thousands of Volts that can provide a mean shock to us humans and hurt our radio gear. I am leaving for the race track to play with my Miata this weekend. Re: [Elecraft] K3--Too much ALC creates energy on opposite sideband?
There is a big difference between "energy on opposite sideband" and hearing the opposite sideband. If you switch to the opposite sideband and can clearly copy the intelligence, then the issue is sideband suppression. If you hear unintelligible audio from the offending signal, that is splatter with many possible causes, one of which is IMD in the exciter, amplifier, or both. ALC is frequently abused with the offending op receiving great audio reports. I find many who never monitor ALC while operating SSB. Few ops give accurate audio quality reports today, much less pay attention to TX bandwidth when providing reports in spite of the proliferation of SDR's and panadapters. Most don't know the difference between RFI in the TX audio chain and an over-driven signal. We need to mentor our brethren to help guide them in the right direction. While some might consider this nitpicking, ours is a service based on science and facts. However, science and facts are too often ignored. I use screen captures from my P3 when pointing out broad signals. Half of the offending ops don't have an e-mail on QRZ.com. Half of those who do are surprised to learn of their transmitter bandwidth "abuse." A significant portion of those don't care and are offended. Fortunately, that is rarely the case here. 73, Bill, K8TE "Sadly, many of those are splattering so wide that you can hear them on the opposite sideband. The current version of the KAT500 manual is Rev C6 (3/8/17) and directs users to connect the power cable to "the station 11 to 15 VDC power supply". This is another reason why we should use the most current manuals and update them with firmware changes. Elecraft is one of the few in this business who allow adding notes to their PDF manuals. Re: [Elecraft] Fusing power cable on K3
Bob has it right, when used mobile which I do a lot for QSO parties. Here is the rationale: The pictorial at right is from this author's May 2015, QST, starting on page 35, entitled The Modern Mobile. It clearly represents the correct wiring scenario, whereas the negative lead goes to the same chassis grounding point as the battery's chassis ground point. And as shown, the negative lead fuse should not be removed. The reason is, if the grounding point should lose its integrity, excessive current could flow through the transceiver's negative lead. It also prevents a minor ground loop between the leads. You can find more details at: http://www.k0bg.com/wiring.html. And hello Dave! Re: [Elecraft] [AX1] Who has the AX1 antenna DX record?
While these anecdotes and even the modeling results are interesting, they provide only a measure of insight into the questions about any antennas performance. Midway between them and using WSPRLite to compare two antennas, in this case one with a counterpoise and one without, the Reverse Beacon Network or WSPR Reporter would give far more insight than modeling and contacts made. The RBN will give near real time results for locations where there are receivers and where propagation exists. If you used CW to call CQ, you could download that day's data and view the RBN results of your CQ's. There are many more WSPR receiving sites, but that would require using a computer with one's portable transceiver. If additional weight, time, and a small amount of battery capacity aren't big issues, bring along a WSPRLite transmitter. Spend as much time as you are able and willing then analyze the data at the WSPRLite DXplorer web site. Bring a friend with his or her gear and another WSPRLite transmitter and you'll get real data comparing the two configurations from on-the-air tests that are meaningful. The word that struck my attention is "solar" and the possibility of that controller causing noise. When you were connected to just the battery and dummy load, was the battery disconnected from the solar system? And, at what level was the buzz relative to a full power carrier? Every transmitter has some noise on its signal. Specifications and FCC rules in some cases call for a specific ratio. I can't imagine a factory reset solving a problem like this. Be certain you have saved your configuration first. Re: [Elecraft] K3 and WIN10
It's already possible to use a K3 without a computer. I've done that in the middle of a contest when I had to re-boot my computer. I logged on paper until I had access to the log when I added those contacts. Regarding computer-related problems, having provided on-line and telephone tech support for Gateway, the majority of troubles with which I helped were user-induced. I liken the issue to when I had responsibility for a small phone system--lack of knowledge on using that "tool." I assert we need to have sufficient knowledge to operate and maintain our computers, just like our radios. Sometimes we need to seek help from others, often found on this list. I also assert too many ops aren't conversant with their equipment and much less with their equipment manuals. Of course, we all do dumb things and I am near the top of that list. Still, I update my PDF manuals and make use of them. For Windows, Google is your friend. It is more useful than trying to find help on Microsoft's web site, in my experience. I use electronic loggers for many reasons. Except for the fine products at QRPWorks, I use a computer and the appropriate logger. I am a keyboard wiz and can type much faster than I can print. BTW, I have often used the K3 Utility with a USB hub. But, not all USB hubs are created equal and I always bypass a hub when troubleshooting connectivity issues. I would rather have the K4 firmware space used for features rather than replacing functions best done on a computer or other external device. It is 2019 and computers belong in our shacks, IMHO. On SOTA peaks, that may be a different story. Still, I prefer a non-radio solution for logging, like a notebook computer, than having a logger in my radio. Save that battery for operating! Just my humble (or not) opinion. BTW, I enjoyed several conversations with Elecraft personnel at the IDXC this weekend and with Bill, AE6JV. I also noticed WA6HHQ on APRS. It was an excellent convention once again and I hope the plans to move it to the Wyndham next year revert back to the Visalia Convention Center with its larger facilities. 73, Bill, K8TE So, speaking of the K4 . . . When Eric asked a few weeks ago what we might like to have if there were to be a next generation transceiver, near the top of my list was adding whatever it would take to make it unnecessary to connect the transceiver to an outboard computer -- so far as reasonably possible -- ever, for anything. Eric eventually closed that thread and I don't mean to reopen the wider question. But would something along those lines ease the kinds of problems we've been reading about here lately? Re: [Elecraft] new KPA1500 Manual
Right on! First, I have over two decades of experience with replacing printed pages in Air Force Technical Orders. What a PITA, but necessary. Today, those are distributed electronically and printed locally. Often, it's not possible to make a change that affects only one page since the change, often an addition, pushes information on to the next page. Thanks to Elecraft (not all manufactures do this), we can annotate the PDF versions with the latest firmware notes, ideas from this reflector, our just our own pointers. The PDF then becomes a current, searchable document of great value! As I point out in my ham radio presentations, it's 2019. We do a lot of things with computers now. Join the 21st century. The technology has certain advantages, especially if you back-up your data. 73, Bill, K8TE -- Sent from: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] KPA1500 210 (209) Firmware Bug?
I brought my KPA1500 to Lubbock for the CQ WW WPX SSB Contest. Like a good Elecraft owner, I checked for firmware updates using the KPA1500 Utility, downloaded what is actually version 210, and installed it. Next, I checked the integration with the IC-7610, KPA1500, and antenna switch. Much to my chagrin, the KPA1500 did not understand CI-V frequency information above 3800 KHz and throughout the 160m band! My next thought was to panic, but good Air Force troubleshooting techniques came through. The antenna switch understood the radio, but not the amplifier. It worked in the ARRL DX SSB Contest. Loading an previous configuration did not change the symptom. I downloaded version 207 and that fixed the problem! BTW, I downloaded version 210 three times and the same symptom occurred with each. I tried all other HF bands without failure. I suggest a quick look by someone who understands (wrote) the update. As long as you stay below 3800 and don't use 160m, you won't experience this problem. Of course, the KPA1500 frequency counter took over, but that is not "smooth" at full power and I don't like red LED's shining in my face. 73, and good luck in the contest! Re: [Elecraft] Will there be a K4
I will visit a friend to operate his station again for the CQ WW WPX SSB Contest this coming weekend. We use these opportunities to motivate and train new contesters. His main rig is an IC-7610. I will bring my KPA1500 to substitute for his 600 Watt amplifier and tuner since neither provides the kind of integration the K-Line can. I greatly prefer operating my K3/P3 over the IC-7610! The P3 is a far better panadaptor than the IC-7610's! The K3's user interface is much simpler and more effective to operate than the IC-7610's. BTW, this his the second IC-7610 in my friend's shack as the first failed 46+ times during last November's ARRL SS-SSB Contest (we may have missed counting some). Icom had the radio for several weeks and found no trouble. I give them credit for replacing it after the November debacle, no questions asked. The replacement didn't fail during the ARRL DX-SSB Contest in February. The K4, when it comes, I assert, will not be about aesthetics, but performance and features serious hams want. If you haven't been paying attention, a significant number of those hams have replaced their K3S radios with the Flex 6700. Their feature set and performance have set a standard the K4 will need to excede. I am confident it will. The K3S is definitely NOT "dated" with regard to performance. Check out Rob Sherwood's, NC0B, receiver performance listing: http://www.sherweng.com/table.html. The K3S is #2 for transceivers with the upgraded K3 immediately behind it. Elecraft's challenge is to provide a significant improvement in performance which depends upon both hardware and engineering. That is more difficult than ever before. The K3 was a game-changer. I suspect we won't see a K4 until it too can change the game. I am amused by some of the Luddite comments regarding touch screens and computer interfacing. Yes, the K3S is an awesome stand-alone rig and the K-Line abely performs without a computer in sight. However, most of us have progressed from contesting and DX'ing using paper and pen. Don't use a computer if you don't want, but don't knock the many advantages a computer in the shack provides. After all, it is 2019. Read your equipment manuals, get KE7X's books, and see what else you can do with your Elecraft gear. Most of all, have fun. I recall watching the KPA1500 poster go up on the wall at the IDXC in Visalia. I look forward to seeing the K4 poster there or in Xenia! After all, it's just my kids' inheritance I'm spending and enjoying. 73, Bill, K8TE -- Sent from: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] Running KPA500 on generators.
GM Neil, I regularly use my KPA500 on a generator. This week, I'm using it on a Cummins 3.5 KW in our RV. One year ago, I used it on a Harbor Freight Predator equivalent to the Honda 2 KW inverter. It works well on all three. The only caveat is when operating CW, I needed to avoid using the "Econ" mode which sets the idle speed much lower. The Honda and HF versions didn't like the sudden change in current draw and would fault. As always, check the HV supply reading on the KPA500 to determine if a different transformer primary setting is necessary under load. I want to add the KPA500 manual describes the different primary tap settings. There seems to be a lack of manual-checking going around these days. The updated manuals (firmware changes) are invaluable tools! Fortunately, Elecraft allows making notes in the PDF versions of their manuals (copy and paste) which is much easier to accomplish than in the printed versions. 73, Bill, K8TE -- Sent from: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] whats a updated K3 called?
Don, While perhaps "obvious," the models you describe are not updates of previous versions in the order as W3FPR pointed out in a subsequent message. Those radios are very different from each other in many aspects, especially performance. Although, each is considered by most to be a top performer in its class. I am amused by many who add one or more of the new K3S modules to their K3 and then call their radio a K3S. They are not and never will be. An upgraded K3 can approach a K3S, but not quite get there. I hate to start another K4 e-mail chain. It may be too late now. If I were to bet, I would bet the next Elecraft top-of-the-line K? will likely use a newer topology than the K3. However, the K3S is number three on Rob Sherwood's receiver performance list. As Rob has pointed out the last several years, transmitter performance (cleanliness) is where most radios need improvement today. Regardless, when operating Field Day or any multi-multi event, my K3 with updated (correct term in this case) synthesizers is my radio of choice. I have seen how many new radios "collapse" under the strain of other nearby transmitters. At the same time, there are other radios with comparable performance in similar situations. I am anxiously waiting for the Elecraft next iteration, whether or not it's designated K4, to take the lead. 73, Bill, K8TE Hi all, It’s very obvious to me. Elecraft began with a K1, then “updated” to a K2 (which I am building). Then they “updated” to a K3, and all the new mods that go on it. So, it’s very obvious to me, that the new “updated” radio should be called (ready for this?), THE K4 ! It naturally follows with their earlier naming scheme. Re: [Elecraft] Flumoxed
Good points in most cases on this subject except for the word "works". My friend Alan, K0BG, insists this word is actually an acronym which I have used in dozens of presentations: " WithOut Real Knowledge". This means someone made one or more contacts (anecdotes) so this antenna "works." I have used numerous antennas that "work". But, let's say on 40m, the big beam at 145 ft. at VY2TT outperformed anything else I have ever used! We demonstrated the difference between effective and far less effective antennas during FD this year, in spite of S9+ noise on RX. Our A4 (3L on 20m and 15m) and 40m dipole at 40 ft. helped us make more contacts, often four-to-five times as many, thAn other local FD groups, even the ones who ran more rigs than we (single HF rig). Also, my 40m dipole at 40 ft. works much better than many of the other local antennas that "work." Read W8JI's perspective on an OCF dipole and note he recommends an 80/20% split with a CURRENT BALUN. I use an end-fed wire with a 9:1 transformer and counterpoise for SOTA when atop a mountain. When others use a similar antenna at home, they often create RFI in their own shacks, frequently distorting their SSB signals. On the occasion when those antennas "work," they get great reports ("S7--great signal") in spite of 50% distortion. Another op in the same town with a half-wave, center-fed dipole is likely much stronger with no RFI in the audio. The problem--too few ops look into what's going on, give accurate signal reports, or compare their shiny (short and pretty) antennas against a dipole. Yes, I've made HF contacts with a light bulb and yes there is a light bulb contest on the horizon. But, I used my OCF and center-fed fan dipoles at 40 ft. to work VP6D on 160m-10m (excluding 60m), something which I likely would not have done with my 33 ft. end-fed SOTA antenna. 73, Bill, K8TE -- Sent from: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] SSB Features of the KX2 & KX3 You May Have Overlooked...
Don makes an excellent point regarding new firmware release notes. Unlike other manufacturers, Elecraft manuals in PDF allow us to make notes with Acrobat Reader. If pertinent, I update my manuals with release notes. That reinforces the changes, even if briefly. However, when I look in the manual for a specific function, I will likely see the note with the most current information. RTFM is a popular acronym today. It also implies the "M" (manual) is current. It's our, IMHO, responsibiliy to keep our manuals current. We can even add our own notes, like lessons learned. Once updated, I save mine by adding "Annotated" to the original filename. I also keep copies on any computer I might use with the gear, especially ones I take on-the-road. 73, Bill, K8TE Lots of Elecraft in the Shack and Backpack -- Sent from: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Re: [Elecraft] Avoiding costly lightning damage to your radios gear
With 26 years experience in USAF communications and even more in commercial broadcasting, I disconnect all wire inputs to my station's components when the threat of thunderstorms arises. If planned well, this is easy to accomplish. I have made significant money repairing commercial broadcast transmitters which were installed properly but still suffered damage during direct hits to their antennas. That damage was very rare, but still occurred. I disconnect my DSL router's wall wart and phone line inputs along with antenna, rotator control, and other cables that enter through the single point protected/bonded/grounded panel. That has worked every time! If lightning comes within ten miles, I disconnect. If away from home, all my valuable electronics are disconnected. I do the same for snow storms which with blowing wind also generate significant static electricity. Why take the chance? If I were to run a remote system, like my race car, I would be ready to walk away from either in spite of taking appropriate preventive measures and accept the loss. 73, Bill, K8TE -- Sent from: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Manual
Actually, you can update the PDF version of Elecraft manuals. This is a great (IMHO) way to keep track of firmware changes. I can carry all the annotated manuals with me during portable/mobile expeditions for the eventuality of a memory failure (mine, not the rigs'). It also saves a lot of trees. I always know where to find my PDF copies and really dislike most paperwork, except for the awesome KE7X books. I tried doing this with the IC-7610 manual, but it was not allowed. I would add this to the K3s vs. IC-7610 comparison chart as an Elecraft benefit. BTW, I have the 7610 manual to help a friend who bought one. His radio is back at Icom for what seems to be a common failure mode--suddenly no TX or RX. He would not drink the Elecraft Kool-Aid I tried to provide, even though he's operated many a K3 at FD or contest sites with me. 73, Bill, K8TE (catching up on e-mail) I download all the Elecraft manuals and print them on 3-hole paper (pre-punched) and then keep them in a binder. This way, I can add notes here and there in the right spot merely by inserting another 3-hole punched paper or punching printed e-mails or something myself. I think this is the absolute best way to manage the information you will collect over the years on different things like suggested settings for this-and-that and so on. 73, phil, K7PEH -- Sent from: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Re: [Elecraft] P3: Left span limit changes
Yes Skip, I too wish the P3 settings would remain with each band and mode. In contests like the IARU HF Championship, ARRL 10m, etc. where both modes are allowed, keeping appropriate bandwidth settings and the RX bandpass locations on the P3 would be very helpful! Yes, we can use a K-Pod or Genovation keyboard to do a lot, but I would rather keep what settings currently exist and change them only when I want to do so. I guess the first question is: is there enough memory in the P3 to do this. If so, where is something like this in the firmware improvement plan. If not, how difficult is it to upgrade the firmware memory size to accomplish this? In the meantime, I rarely run my K3 without the P3, even when I operate portable, like the upcoming Field Day. In the shack I use an SVGA monitor connected to the P3. I plan to replace it with a PIP monitor so I can switch from P3-1 to P3-2 in SO2R configuration. I often take P3 screenshots for stations with broad signals and to use in presentations. Re: [Elecraft] 2018 Field Day
We (the Albuquerque DX Assn) will operate W5UR in the Sandia Ranger District of the Cibola National Forest at Cedro Peak Park. We hope, like 2016, the District will not close due to fire restrictions. That year, I took my K3 to the NM DHS EOC and operated in a trailer with the ARRL SM and others. They used an IC-7600 for SSB and PSK while I operated just CW. We had a tri-band beam up about 35 ft. and an 80m OCF dipole about 50 ft. away which I used most of the time. If I tried to operate on the same band (different mode), the 7600 crashed. That rig desensed the K3, but I could continue to operate. I made more contacts than the SSB/PSK guys who operated more than I. A friend and fellow contester received his IC-7610 a few months ago to replace the IC-7600 he won years ago. Even on different bands, and with bandpass filters on my K3, the 7600 suffered some in RX sensitivity when we were on different bands. It will be interesting to see how his 7610 performs under similar circumstances when it comes back from Icom. Like many of them, it has an intermittent problem that drops TX/RX unexpectedly and sporadically! Due our to demographics, we will operate 1A again like, last year (21st in 1A) with a second K3 sharing antennas (triplexer and filters) for training/practice. We made 754 contacts, 73% CW, with five hours downtime due to lightning. In 2012 we operated three K3's and two K2's and placed 4th overall! We could operate two K3's and a K2 on 20m (SSB, GOTA, and CW) with NO inter-station QRM until the SSB rig's battery ran down. Somebody hit the surge suppressor switch, disconnecting the generator power. A CW op asked what changed. This is a good example why we run 14 VDC on the K3 for a cleaner signal and not 10 VDC. 73, Bill, K8TE -- Sent from: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] Ham radio as a side dish
I'm amazed that such an eclectic group has so many similar experiences in which I am included: flying, NAVAIDs, boats, trumpet, bass in choir, etc. Adding to the ILS story, while stationed at Canon AFB NM, I also worked full-time as a TV broadcast engineer. I was part of a team that installed a new FM station at the same location. Shortly after that, I got word at the Communications Squadron Chief of Maintenance office where I worked of F-111D pilots experiencing country and western music on on runway's ILS approach. The FM frequency was 107.5, just below the ILS localizer band. My Chief and I stook a giant RADAR spectrum analyzer (two-man carry) to the FM TX site. As expected, it was clean. Next, I visited the Avionics shop to put a USM/323 RF signal generator on one of the F-111 ILS receivers. With a 105.5 FM modulated signal, the ILS RX lit up! It was as broad as...! The least expensive solution was to move the ILS (Localizer and Glideslope since they're related) to a new frequency pair. That meant new antennas, phasing lines, alignment, etc. I'm certain it cost more than the new RCA FM transmitter and antenna/feedline, but was "easier" to accomplish. BTW, an HT and helmet-mounted headset work pretty well in sports car racing. However, I never tried to add HF mobile to my Spec Miata, much less try CW while on the track! I have some interesting in-car video recordings of me calling my wife after some "incidents." 73, Bill, K8TE -- Sent from: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Re: [Elecraft] K3 SSB +CW Power Overshoot
Dan, I experienced a similar issue with my K3, S/N range 4,000. I attempted a TX Gain calibration with minimal improvement. 40m and higher bands (in frequency) worked OK (no overshoot) while lower bands still faulted. I finally performed an EE INIT, reloaded 5.60 firmware, and the last saved configuration. I later upgraded to the beta 5.64 firmware. Neither firmware version resulted in overshoot after the EE INIT. The rig has operated normally over the last week. I can now rest without worries (about the K3 and its performance at the upcoming FD). Save your current K3 configuration and try an EE INIT. While not logical, I did this twice before I achieved success. Re: [Elecraft] Art of Electronics
Phil, Yes, I'm catching up on e-mail. Your description of physics cirriculum brought me back to my high school physics which was called "PSSC" based on the work done at MIT and described in: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Physical_Science_Study_Committee. I had been licensed a couple of years by then (1962) and found PSSC physics fit me to a tee! My bachelor studies in vocational education decades later showed how the approached used by the PSSC was smart and useful, something being "re-discovered" today by educators who often are behind their peers. The Wikipedia article above includes a mention of Heathkit's products that were modified to fit the PSSC model. In between high school and my vocational education experience I taught electronics for Eastern New Mexico University while stationed at Canon AFB. I used the text by Robert Schraeder "Electronic Communication" which one can find used today. I lent mine to my Air Force boss and bought another recently. Schraeder, like so few, has the ability to write clearly about difficult concepts that makes them seem simple. That text made my teaching much easier! "The Art of Electronics" will certainly fit into my reading schedule, in which I am also way behind. 73, Bill, K8TE "My undergraduate degree is Physics and back in the 1960s, my physics curriculum included a similar course study. [Elecraft] P3 Automatic Power On Failed
After returning from a contest operation at KS5Z this past weekend, my P3 would not turn on when I applied 12VDC. I checked the jumper and it was in the correct place. I moved and returned the jumper to 2-3 with no change. Re-loading the firmware did not help. I performed a parameter initialization to no avail. I reloaded the current firmware (which was installed prior to the parameter initialization--no change. Restoring the previous configuration didn't change anything. Has anyone else noticed this anomaly? If so, were you able to return your P3 to "normal" operation where applying 12VDC put it into operation? I really like the idea of power on with 12VDC applied! I use this with an APP distribution panel that turns on the P3 and KAT500 when I turn on the K3. The next step is to power on the KPA500 at the same time. -- 73, Bill, K8TE -- Sent from: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Re: [Elecraft] Mic gain goes to zero using N1MM
Yes Joe, it has happened on my old Toshiba with Windows Vista laptop running N1MM by itself. I don't run NaP3 currently on the shack PC on which I run LP-Bridge. There, I usually have Chrome open as well. The anomaly occurred once during this week's Phone Fray during which I also had an instance of IE open. On that computer, CPU cycles are not an issue. This PC runs on Windows XP, soon to be replaced with a "modern" Dell and Windows 8.1. For communications with the K3, I run N1MM+ through LP-Bridge via an on-board dual Serial port board. I don't run LP-Bridge on my mobile/portable laptop. I tried it once, but it doesn't have sufficient horsepower. With that computer I use a USB to dual serial port adapter for K3 communications. I have observed the anomaly on both computers although it rarely occurs on either. I'll put together a more concise description for the N1MM+ reflector later today. Both computers have anti-virus and firewall programs running simultaneously. In their current configurations, neither has issues with CPU cycles during contesting. I use Startup Delayer to manage what and when programs come up on boot to help manage CPU use. That comes in handy during the rare occurrence when a re-boot is necessary during a contest (always be prepared). I also run the VE7CC CC cluster client when the contest allows and I choose to enter in the assisted class. Again, the problem has occurred both with VE7CC on and off. Let me add my thanks to all who have responded to my question! 73, Bill, K8TE From: Joe Subich, W4TV-4 [via Elecraft] [mailto:ml-node+s365791n7607374...@n2.nabble.com] Sent: Thursday, September 10, 2015 6:52 AM To: K8TE <billama...@gmail.com> Subject: Re: Mic gain goes to zero using N1MM > In my shack I use LP-Bridge to provide virtual serial ports, > including one to the K3. Re: [Elecraft] Mic gain goes to zero using N1MM
I have experienced this same problem over numerous N1MM versions (legacy and Plus). It is very intermittent and I'm unable to identify a specific command or cause. It's happened to me on both my shack and portable computers. This symptom does not show up with my daily logger (N3FJP ACLog) but it has occurred with both of my K3's. I use the "typical" K3 commands for either keying DVK memories or audio from my computers. I don't use any of the mic gain command strings in N1MM+. Are we the only two who have experienced this? I've Googled this previously but not found any threads on the subject. I'm glad to read (sort of) I'm not alone. I have operated many hours (all of Field Day) without this symptom appearing. Yet, it happened a couple of times in last weekend's Colorado QSO Party. It's a mystery to me. 73, Bill, K8TE -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/Mic-gain-goes-to-zero-using-N1MM-tp7600489p7607323.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] Mic gain goes to zero using N1MM
In my case, the Mic gain is normally set to 8-9 (CM500 headset). The anomaly decreases the Mic Gain to zero. I manually reset it to 8-9 which restores SSB power output to normal. I haven’t tried any other actions to restore the Mic gain. All indications I have this is a Mic Gain problem. 73, Bill, K8TE From: KE1B [via Elecraft] [mailto:ml-node+s365791n7607327...@n2.nabble.com] Sent: Wednesday, September 9, 2015 9:20 AM To: K8TE <billama...@gmail.com> Subject: Re: Mic gain goes to zero using N1MM On Sep 9, 2015, at 6:07 AM, K8TE <[hidden email]> wrote: > I have experienced this same problem over numerous N1MM versions (legacy and > Plus). When I lose transmit power (and once it goes, it’s gone until I do a power off/on or switch to ANT2 and back) I checked the Mic Gain and it was normal (31 for me). The power level was also at its proper setting. It has happened both using N1MM+ and my daily logger (MacloggerDX). I use NO CAT commands with MLDX. That is at a time of failure, I have a Mic Gain of 31, a Power level of 50W or so, I key the rig (footswitch), the K3S goes into Transmit Mode (Red LED, receiver goes off) but there is no power output shown, and no SWR shown (as would be if the antenna was disconnected externally). I hear myself perfectly well in the headset monitor, indicating there is a good connection from the microphone through to the radio. Just no output power. And as I said, switching to ANT2 and back to ANT1 brings all to normal, as does a power reset. To me, something is intermittent in the radio internals, but I have no idea what. Elecraft advised me to try to reproduce the problem with a “no frills” setup: no computer, no amp, just the K3S into a dummy load. I’ll try this today, but of course with intermittent problems it may or may not recur. -Rich KE1B -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/Mic-gain-goes-to-zero-using-N1MM-tp7600489p7607328.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] Mic gain goes to zero using N1MM
Bill, Memory macros-nope. All the N1MM macros are the "standard" button pushes for the DVK messages. A raspberry Pi may be in the future for my station control now that an inexpensive touchscreen is available. But I will stick with N1MM+-K3 interface for now. In my shack I use LP-Bridge to provide virtual serial ports, including one to the K3. However, this anomaly has appeared when using my old Vista laptop with both N1MM Legacy and Plus. A passive logger could possibly indicate the anomaly's source. Any suggests for a software logger? Consider that some other command could also be mangled into MG 0. The mangling can occur anywhere in the command. What would be useful here is a passive logger for the RS-232 connection. It would simply monitor the connection and log everything sent over it. It sounds like a Raspberry Pi application to me, but I like to play software that is near the hardware level. You could also do it with an Arduino, which gets rid of the OS, but also makes display output harder. YMMV. 73 Bill AE6JV Guy, I don't believe I've indicated this is an analog problem. It's most obviously a software/firmware problem. There is no "MG" command in the N1MM DVK macros: CATA1ASC SWT21; CATA1ASC SWT31; CATA1ASC SWT35; CATA1ASC SWT39; The only commonality between occurrences is N1MM (various versions) and a pair of K3's with various firmware versions. There are no common cables, USB hubs, serial cards, computers, etc. That is not to say that some errant event occurs on rare occasions.
