Re: [Elecraft] K1 high demand...

2024-04-28 Thread Paul Van Dyke
This was slightly tongue in cheek as I remembered that, but i've seen a
whole lot of people yelling about K1's lately.

If older equipment was good, then we'd all be using AC1's... I'm now going
to see how many remember that particular transmitter.

Re: [Elecraft] K1 high demand...

2024-04-28 Thread Paul Huff
My wife gave me a K1 kit for a combination Christmas and birthday gift
in 2003.  After about 33 hours of super fun construction, it made its
first QSO on 2/29/2004.  Some 2037 QSOs later it was "retired" to a
shelf, after making its last (for me) QSO in May 2018.  It was an
absolutely fantastic radio and the only reason that I retired it was
because, over the subsequent years, I had also built a KX1 for portable
ops, and a K2 to use as my main rig at home.  Two years ago, after
getting a KX3, I decided to clear up some shelf space and "simplify" the
shack, so I donated the K1, along with a bunch of other gear, to an ARC
in my area that runs some public school clubs for middle and high school
students.  I almost immediately regretted getting rid of the K1, but
take some comfort in knowing that it has since been used to encourage
young people to get into the hobby.  (I still have my KX1, K2, KX3, and
have an order in for a KH1, and will probably leave those for my heirs
to donate!)

I kept a detailed written record of my K1 build, and this posting
prompted me to read through that record.  Some great memories!

[Elecraft] K3/100 TX problem on 20m

2024-03-07 Thread Paul Kent

Thanks again, Mike.
My K3 has the bipolar 100w PA.

I also have a properly-functioning K3S/100 with the CMOS PA. Just for
comparison I ran the HP TX gain calibration on the K3S and it produced these
numbers:

160m/19
80m/08
60m/10
40m/12
30m/13
20m/08
17m/08
15m/05
12m/10
10m/10
6m/06

The numbers are significantly different from those of the K3 but that probably
doesn’t mean much. I even thought about swapping the PA modules between the K3
and K3S as a test but they are not compatible for a direct swap.

[Elecraft] K3/100 TX problem on 20m

2024-03-05 Thread Paul Kent

My K3/100 gives a high DC current warning when transmitting on 20m with power
settings above 75 watts. Maximum output is about 80 watts and is unstable. All
other bands perform normally with full 100w output and normal current draw. (50
ohm dummy load) I have done the TX gain and wattmeter calibrations, finding no
issues and with no change in symptoms. The output LPF is shared with 30m and I
replaced all the capacitors in that circuit, also with no change in symptoms.
Any ideas on what may be causing this problem?

[Elecraft] K3 RIT tuning rate

2024-02-02 Thread Paul Kirley

Dear OM Mark K1RX,

The tuning rate of the K3 RIT/XIT basically follows the rate of the main VFO.
Here are a few comments from one version of the operating manual:

VFOs and RIT/XIT
• RATE {21} selects 10 or 50 Hz VFO/RIT tuning. See VFO menu entries, pg. 57.
• FINE {21} selects 1-Hz steps. COARSE selects large steps (MAIN menu, VFO CRS).

FINE Select 1 Hz tuning for both VFOs and RIT/XIT offset

VFO CRS Per-mode Per-mode coarse tuning rate (hold COARSE and tune VFO A or B).
Tap 1 to turn
rounding on/off. Also applies to the RIT/XIT tuning knob if CONFIG:VFO OFS is
set to ON, and both RIT and XIT are turned OFF.

[Elecraft] Problem with K3EXREF

2024-01-20 Thread Paul Wilton
I’ve just added a new K3EXREF to my K3 but it’s not working. When I select
CONFIG->REF CAL, I don’t see the * indicating lock. Also, I can change the cal
frequency via VFO A.

I have confirmed that a suitable 10MHz clock is appearing on Pin 8 of the
header on the K3EXREF PCB. There is also 49.380MHz presented on pin 6. On pin
1, I can see some very long duration (50ms to 400ms) square waves going from 0
to 4.7v every few seconds. These same pulses appear on Pin 1 of P75 on the
KREF3 PCB and then onto the RF board.

The K3 is running the latest firmware.

Has anyone has similar problems and found a way to fix them? I have put in a
call to support but wondering if someone on the list is able to help prior to
Monday AM

[Elecraft] KAT 500 Loses Match

2024-01-12 Thread Paul Ecker
I am experiencing a new problem for me, with my KAT 500. So far I've
noticed this issue on 30M. I am using a dipole cut only for 30M with an SWR
of 1.2 to 1.3 max SWR across the band. I “trained the tuner” at 20khz
segments on 30M.

Setup is K4D, KAT 500 & KPA 500. Win 10 pc.

Running CW, I can start transmitting and all is fine- my LP100A is showing
1.2 SWR and am getting max power out of the radio. Then all of sudden the
SWR jumps to >9.0. The KAT starts chattering and finds a new match. But if
I start transmitting again – pwr out is only about 10 W at that new match,
and eventually the tuner becomes untuned again. Sometimes, it will then
hold the tune but still only getting abt 9-10w power out. The issue occurs
with KPA500 both on and off.

Does this sound like a KAT 500 problem or maybe an RFI problem.

Re: [Elecraft] USB-RS232 cable

2024-01-11 Thread Paul Kirley

Dear OM Peter MØRYB,

The adapter cable you describe is still available from Elecraft. Go to
https://elecraft.com/pages/parts-mod-kits
and search for KUSB. Its price is currently USD 42.95 plus shipping.

Alternatively, attached is a picture of my KUSB hardware and a scan of
its specs shown on the packaging that I received in 2011 from Elecraft.
It is not merely a cable; it contains a critical chipset.

Some adapter cables use the Prolific chipset, some of which will not
work properly with the K3. As you can see at the lower right of the
attached scan, the FTDI chipset is recommended by Elecraft, and it
appears to work well.

My KUSB from Elecraft came with a driver CD, but that was outdated; the
manufacturer's website furnished a current driver.

I didn't get much use out of the KUSB because my Windows 7 computer
(which had a serial and parallel port adapter card installed) turned out
to function appropriately with the K3 after I found that there is a
serial port setting for more accuracy versus more speed (see third
attachment). This setting, accessible only to Administrators, defaults
to more speed and made for lots of errors when updating K3 firmware.
Moving the slider left to "Low" allowed me to use a simple double-DB9
cable for the rest of the Win 7 computer's life. But this only applies
if the computer has a serial port.

GL and 73,

Paul W8TM

using the SDRUno software - it's perhaps no accident that although the company
produce videos about setting a panadapter they are effectively second receivers
using the antenna input, rather than the IF output. I know I could go down this
route by looping the RX our RX in sockets with a tap for panadapter input, but
I had hoped to use the IF out.

I see some people are using HDSDR software - I did try installing that, but it
insists on using OmniRig v2, whereas my Logging program (Log4OM) and WSJT-X use
OmniRig v1.1 and I'm not sure I can make the swap to Omnirig 2.

Are there users who have some experience of this who can help? I know the
obvious answer is to source a P3, but getting a P3 from the Us which starts out
at say USD 750 is likely to set me back close to USD 1000 because of freight
costs and taxes by the time it's in my shack in Dublin.

Happy New Year to all.

73,

Paul EI5KI

Thanks a lot. Your point out the TX power control made me think. So I redid
the TX Gain Calibration and now all is well!

I suspect I might have set the power to either 5w or 50w and hit the XMIT
button..

[Elecraft] K3 KAT3 usage

2023-11-22 Thread Paul Wilton
If I remember correctly, when an ATU tune up is requested from the front panel
of a K3 equipped with a KAT3, once the tune up is completed, the final SWR is
flashed to the screen? The reason I ask is that my K3 seems to have stopped
doing this - even with a dummy load connected.

If I hold down the xmit button for the Tune function, then the SWR is displayed
along with the power output.

So two questions
a) Am I misremembering the behaviour of the ATU tune up?
b) If not, any suggestions as to what to look for to correct it?

[Elecraft] Wanted P3

2023-10-26 Thread Paul Barlow
Dear Elecrafters,

After a long period of inactivity, I have been back on the air regularly with
my K3 (serial 7***). I operate CW and some FT8/FT4. It's a QRP one and has some
addons. When I bought the original kit, I had the idea of getting a P3, which
never happened at the time. Now they are discontinued, so I wonder if anyone
has a P3 they would be interested in selling to me? Since I'm in Ireland it
would be best if it were somewhere in Europe as freight charges from the US
have become pretty huge.

I posted this on K4SWL's website but want to repeat it here...

My current portable radio is a KX1 and there is something special about

Re: [Elecraft] Very late to the party - computer rig control and sound card modes for K3

2023-08-09 Thread Paul Barlow
Dear Elecrafters,

Less than a month ago I asked a question about computer rig control, computer
logging and sound interfaces for soundcard modes. Thanks to the people who took
the time to reply and gave me helpful advice.

All is now connected in the EI5KI shack, I bought a refurbed Windows 10 laptop
and set it up to talk my K3 using the USB to RS232 interface I'd had since I
bought it with the K3. I now have communication between the rig and the logging
software (Log4OM). I've also installed WSJT-X and I'm using FT8 and FT4 with
some success. In the end I settled for a cable to break out the combined
microphone/ headphone jack on the Laptop and two cables from that to the line
in/line out on the K3. I did try a USB sound card (an Asus Xonar U5), but it
won't talk to the laptop - this seems to be a known problem with Windows 10.

So, once again, thanks for the advice and encouragement.

[Elecraft] KAT 500 Antenna Selection Problems

2023-08-03 Thread Paul Ecker
In the KAT 500 Utility – Configuration- Antennas- Band- 17M;

I have Antenna 3 checked as Enabled and Antenna 3 as Preferred. No other
antennas are selected for 17 m. This configuration has been applied and
saved. Setup is Flex 6600, KAT500, KPA500 & win 10 pc.

The problem I am having is: with radio on 17 M, when I run a “tune”
sequence, the KAT does not switch to Ant 3, in fact it will not let me
manually switch to ant 3. I occasionally have the same issue with the tuner
not switching on other bands, to the selected antenna as set up in the
utility.

Any suggestions on what may be causing this ?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Power-hunting on FT8

2023-07-20 Thread Paul Maciel
Hi Peter,

Setting the ALC for FT8 is different than other transceivers due to the way the
K3 adjusts power.

You should adjust the slider to give four solid bars and the fifth flickering.
You find the outputvwull be ver stable then.

See you on the bands!

[Elecraft] Very late to the party - computer rig control and sound card modes for K3

2023-07-18 Thread Paul Barlow
Dear Elecrafters,

I am very late to the party. For various reasons I have been QRT for a few
years and I'm just now getting back on the air. I'm still using a paper log,
and QRP CW is my 'thing'.

My rig is a K3, serial no. in the 7000's. I have the KUSB cable, which I have
only used to update the firmware. Could I use this to connect to a pc and have
rig control via this cable? Say for interfacing with a logging program?

Also, I've never used the FT8 type modes. I understand they use the pc for all
the signal processing, and I could interface the K3 directly using audio cables
and VOX. I see that there are products available like the SignaLink which
interface with a pc using usb, which I think might be a less fiddly option.

I guess these subjects have been beaten to death years ago, is there somewhere
I could look to find some concise information?

73,

[Elecraft] K1 Low power output on one band

2023-07-12 Thread Paul Barlow
Dear Elecrafters,

I'd like some advice before I go delving into something and making it worse! I
have taken my 4 band K1 out of storage. It is set up for 40m, 30m, 20m and 15m.
It also has the auto ATU. On checking it out I find output as expected on 40m &
30m - 5W set gives 5W out on my dummy load. But on 20m I'm only getting about
1W out for 5W set, on 15m I get an indicated 4W.

My first guess is that I need to revisit the tuning of the trimmers on the
filter board of the 15m and 20m (the manual reminds me to trim 15m first) bands.

I need to remove the ATU to do this and I find in my manual a cryptic note to
say I need to move a jumper on P3. I think that will then route the RF to the
antenna rather than to the not connected ATU.

Any more advice would be helpful before I dive in.

73,

Paul EI5KI

[Elecraft] KX3 and SWR

2023-03-16 Thread Paul Huff
My HyGain AV-640 vertical antenna was damaged in a recent winter storm
and will need to come down for repairs once the good weather is here to
stay and I can get around to it.  In the mean time I would still like to
use it.  The only band that really shows a significant problem is
40-meters.  The tuner in my KX3 used to give me a nice 1:1 SWR at 7.05
MHZ.  Now the best match it will give there is about 1.6:1.  In the "old
days" we were happy with anything under 2:1 but can new rigs like my KX3
tolerate this poorer match?  I only run 5-watts CW.  Let me say "thank
you" in advance for any advice anyone might have.

[Elecraft] KPA1500 5V ERR Fault

2022-11-05 Thread Paul Christensen
First, the 10V regulator failed a while back, now the amp faults and
displays "5V ERR." I've not been successful in getting a complete
schematic. If I can get the board number/name and schematic symbol (e.g.,
U1), I can fix this on my own as I did with the 10V reg repair. Requests to
the Elecraft help desk do get answered but it took over a month of very slow
communication.

The list archives show comments about the 5V ERR fault, but no detail. Any
assistance with a schematic symbol and board number would be very helpful,
especially if there's more than one 5V regulator in the KPA1500 amp.

[Elecraft] going back in time with the K1

2022-08-22 Thread Paul Kirley

The K1's main tuning rate is partially determined by the choice of tuning
range, with the wider range obviously requiring a faster tuning rate for
complete traversal.

The K1 manual indicates that RF board capacitor C2 determines the main tuning
range, with C2 = 120 pF yielding about 150 kHz of range and C2 = 68 pF yielding
about 80 kHz of range. Both capacitors were supplied with the kit.

There was an official Elecraft mod for the K1 to eliminate the variation in the
main tuning rate from one end to the other of its range, but I skipped that mod
because the variation didn't bother me.

RIT/XIT tuning range and rate is determined by the R4/R3/R5 voltage divider on
the front panel board. Increasing equally the values of fixed resistors R4 and
R5 will reduce both incremental tuning range and rate. (Obviously, it's easier
to replace the fixed resistors than the pot.)

A value of R4 = R5 = 47K will result in an RIT/XIT tuning range of about 1 kHz,
with resulting slower tuning. On the other hand, this range isn't enough for
DX split-frequency operating, so DXers may prefer some value between 47K and
the stock but touchy 10K.

[Elecraft] DX Clusters reccomendation

2022-07-28 Thread Paul Huff
I'm starting to setup Log4OM on my new computer and it is "talking"
great to my KX3.  The software has more bells and whistles than I could
ever imagine using.  One of it's features is the ability to connect to
various DX clusters for spotting.  This is something that I have never
done in the past but it looks like a very nice tool to use.  Log4OM has
a long list of clusters. Does anyone have a recommendation for one or
two of the more popular and reliable ones to try out?

Thanks and 73,

[Elecraft] K2 sn 179 drop outs

2022-06-29 Thread Paul Kemp

I used my K2, s/n 179, at FD with great success with one problem. During tuning
on 40 and 20M the encoder would temporarily "drop out", causing the received
signals to cut out.

I bought the radio at an estate sale last September with the intent to use it
for FD. It was a Rev A so I put in the Rev B upgrades for whatever options were
installed (not much if any). I also added the noise blanker. I had noticed the
drop out when I used the radio on occasion but assumed it was due to lack of
use.

Elecraft doesn't show an upgraded encoder assembly on their website. Is there
one for such an old radio? I have an email in to the tech support there, as
well as researching the reflector.

Re: [Elecraft] What is a reasonable turnover time to hear from Elecraft support:

2022-06-14 Thread John Paul Keon
As for the Elecraft Support Staff, I am very happy and a very
satisfied customer.

I emailed them several times and got replies within a reasonable amount of
time.

I sent my K3S in for repair and got it back in a short time.
They made the necessary repairs, and upgrades and it works better
than it did new. Evidently when I built it I did not tighten down some
parts
and did not do some other things properly.
They sent it back calibrated and factory updated.

I also received several calls from Doug and he explained what happened
to the radio. Some of the support techs also called.

Happy? Yes!
Supportive? YES!

I know they were hung up for a while with the K4D production and the issues
they had in house. After that cleared they took my RMS and got it done!

The idling current displays at 2A, but you have to be in operate. When the HIGH
SWR error occurs the amp goes in to standby. Putting it back into operate after
the error the idle current is again displayed as 2A, waiting for the next
intermittent HIGH SWR failure.

I hate intermittents.

Check your idling current -- should be stable at about 2 amps.

2022-05-11 Thread paul
Over the last couple of weeks, I have an intermittent problem with the amp.
On a number of occasions, I have received a LOW GAIN error message. The
output drops from 1400W to a few hundred watts or less as confirmed in the
logging file and my external power meter The problem can go away for a few
days and then return. Cycling the power has no effect, the intermittent may
or may not return almost immediately.

Has anybody experienced a similar problem?

My KX3 isn't fully loaded, but does have the KXBC3 fitted. Like Eric, if

RTC, but I suppose it is useful to see the time for the log.

I wish I had the internal tuner fitted - I have heard nothing but good
about it. I have an external T1 which has developed a fault, so I bought
an N7DDC ATU-10 from banggood to keep me going until I have an
opportunity to troubleshoot the T1. It is quite a statement on the
current world situation that I can buy a very capable QRP tuner for less
than the repair costs for my T1 and get it from China in less than two
weeks!

Enjoy your KX3 when you get it - it's a fantastic radio!

Re: [Elecraft] T1 not tuning

2022-04-26 Thread Paul Jewell
Not sure if you are referring to my post from a few weeks back. When I finally
spent time diagnosing my problem, I can confirm it is doing everything as
expected, except it continually flashes 4 yellow. Based on a very helpful email
from Elecraft technical support, it is clear that something is keeping the
on/off transistor energised. I haven’t yet had a chance to diagnose further
(due to work commitments).

For your case, I recommend trying with a new battery before deciding it isn’t
working. Then make sure it isn’t in bypass mode before tuning. If this doesn’t
work, post more details about that happens when you try to tune.

Good luck!

Best regards,
Paul

It would be helpful if you at least provided city/state of where the equipment
is located.  This information might encourage other to follow up with you if
indeed the equipment is relatively close to their area.  I also know that there
are some folks who purchase estate items and resell at hamfests.  Thus, knowing
where this equipment is located might encourage further interest.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft T1 Tuner Issue

2022-04-18 Thread Paul Jewell

Some additional information

 * the firmware version is 1.07, not 1.7
 * The yellow LED is flashing in groups of 4 with a period of about 1
second, and a small (<1s) delay before the next group of 4.
 * The unit doesn't power off.
 * This is with a new battery.

Other than this, it all seems to be working.

Any ideas?

Many thanks!

Re: [Elecraft] Shipping via UPS - A Lesson Learned the Hard Way

2022-04-11 Thread PAUL GACEK via Elecraft
Maybe its in this thread but one other UPS (and probably FedEx) policy to be
aware of is that insurance for items NOT packed by UPS only extends to covering
the value of item if lost. If packed by UPS then the insurance covers loss and
in transit damage. When I have sold things either on this list or eBay over a
certain value, I drop them off at the UPS store and have them pack it and ship.

I had a recent “frustration” with UPS, in that I shipped something a few weeks
back associated with a visa application. As the application process had gone
silent I began to wonder if I had shipped the item to the correct address. The
UPS tracking and customer receipt only show the city and state. It was an
unnecessarily convoluted process to verify the address was correct.

I agree that USPS offers many benefits especially if you can “squeeze” an item
into their standard boxes. Plus their receipts include the full shipping
address.

And I believe that each one of us that is on the list knows that. I believe
our philosophy is we know there's at least a dozen OK radios out there, but
we all picked Elecraft even though at this time due the shortages, there's
a long wait. But we loyal and we know Elecraft is ahead of the game. Those
that want to whine about Elecraft shipping times other radios, we politely
asked to go somewhere else. Elecraft is not a "off the shelf radio .. with
it you receive 2 Ceo's, and backing of a staff that watched and improves
the radio each day. Both Flex and Elecraft have issues ... But if you are
getting a TOL radio, you did your research, and made the call... This is my
last post ... I have taken too much space on a subject that I thought was
dead as all it does is rile up people.

[Elecraft] PSK31 on KX3

2022-02-17 Thread Paul Huff
I’ve had my KX3 for about 4 months now and it is a wonderful radio. I am
almost exclusively a CW operator but I am a little bit curious about some of
the digital modes, especially PSK31. My radio flawlessly communicates with my
logging software (RumLogNG) using the ACC1 jack and my question is this - Will
the ACC1 jack also work for PSK31, or is there more needed to interface the
computer and radio for the digital modes?

Also is there any recommendation for PSK31 software that runs on a Mac OS X
computer (Catalina 10.15.7)?

Are there any websites with useful information about using PSK31 on a KX3?

(I know that the KX3 has a limited built-in PSK31 ability, but I haven’t played
around with that at all, and I think that a computer display and keyboard would
be better for me.)

Thanks and 73,

Paul - N8XMS

Re: [Elecraft] Unassembled K2 Vs Assembled Marketability

2022-01-28 Thread PAUL GACEK via Elecraft
My 2 cents is that each appeals to two different markets. Some love to build
kits and what better kit than a K2 and some hate the idea of building something.

I hesitate to share this but I think parting out a K2 and selling boards etc
(SSB, ATU etc) while a hassle for the seller can possibly yield more money. I
ended up buying a complete K2 enclosure which I have no idea what I will do
with but I know from past purchases of enclosures that they can be pricey and
never quite the size you want.

[Elecraft] K1 Question

2022-01-25 Thread Paul Kirley

Tony K2MO asked:

I noticed that the VFO on my 4-band K1 doesn't tune above 14062 and
21061.0 yet it tunes to 7068.6 on 40 meters. The tuning range on 30
meters is 85 kHz (10077 to 10162) so I'm assuming the rig had the
smaller tuning range crystal installed. Tuning range on 40 meters is:
 6986 to 7068.6.

So the question is: how can I shift the tuning range on 20 and 15 meters
so I can tune above 062 and 061 on 14 and 21 MHz? The current tuning
range is 13077 to 14062 on 20 meters and 20976 to 21061.0 on 15 meters.

I recommend that you download the K1 manual if you don't have one for your rig:
https://ftp.elecraft.com/K1/Manuals%20Downloads/E740016%20K1%20manual%20rev%20J.pdf
On page 38 of this manual is the information that you need.

First, the size of the tuning range is set by the choice of capacitor C2 on the
RF board. This also affects the tuning rate and possibly the drift rate.

Second, the lower end of the tuning range is set by squeezing or spreading the
turns on the big toroid L1. I think that the VFO tunes backward (K1 output up
as VFO down), so you may want to squeeze the turns. But read the manual to be
sure. Keep in mind that page 38 of the manual is part of the assembly
instructions; you may need to remove some parts of the K1 (like the band
module) before adjusting L1. Or maybe you can tweak L1 a bit, then check the
effect on the K1's output frequencies and repeat.

Third, per-band differences in output frequencies result from differences in
the frequencies of the crystals on the band module from their nominal values.
I believe that these are unavoidable. If you want to cover the bottom edge of
each band, your measurements suggest that 40 meters is the band to watch. If
that's not a concern, you may be able to move the frequency coverages up more
than 14 kHz.

Re: [Elecraft] Loss in window line

2022-01-14 Thread Paul Gordon N6LL
Waxing about old ham lore, a "Strays" item on page 132 of the December
1946 QST has W6KA repeating advice from W3LPY and W1MJH that
"Simonizing" 300 ohm line (or using floor wax) will "eliminate the
impedance change during rainy weather."

Paul, N6LL - current Trustee of W6KA

p.s.- That would be the impedance presented to the transmitter which
changes, not the characteristic impedance of the line.

Based on my measurements and method I used to measure 100 ft of window

antenna, will have a small effect on the impedance at the station end
of the line.

I really think and believe many comments and opinions regarding window
line, are more "old ham lore" not based on true and complete facts.

[Elecraft] OT Donating Surplus Gear

2022-01-11 Thread Paul Huff
With my wife’s encouragement, I recently purchased my “holy grail” radio - an
Elecraft KX3. Along with this purchase came the decision to reduce my radio
“footprint” and get rid of a lot of my old gear that is no longer getting much
use. Some of this equipment has some non-trivial monetary value, but I don’t
need the money, I don’t want to go through the hassle of trying to sell it, and
I don’t want to deal with shipping issues. I want to just give it away
locally, preferably to a club that could use it (or the proceeds from selling
it) to help younger or disadvantaged hams get on the air.

I’m a 100% QRP/CW operator and most of this stuff relates to that. The gear
includes an Elecraft K1, Rockmite 30, SST40, MFJ Versa Tuner II, Astron PS,
various accessories and numerous books. I have a 3-page pdf document that
gives a complete list. Almost everything is in perfect working order and there
are both hard and digital copies for most of the owners manuals.

I will organize everything, box it up, and can deliver it to just about
anywhere in the SE Michigan area. I want to donate all of it as a group and
not piece it out a little bit at a time. If you are associated with a local
club that could use this donation to promote ham radio, or know somebody who
is, please contact me off the list.

Thanks and 73,

[Elecraft] Elecraft P/N 620021 source

2021-12-30 Thread Paul Kemp
I am looking for a source (besides Elecraft) of the E620021 connector and pins
that is used in the K1. It is the 2 pin female connector that plugs into the
speaker connector on the RF board.

Does anyone have a source (Digikey, Mouser, Allied, Newark, etc.) and the
correct part numbers for both the connector housing and the connector pins? I'd
like to have a spare connector and several pins in the event I break a wire or
want to add a Cumbria Designs X-lock board to my K1.

[Elecraft] ID a small board

2021-12-06 Thread Paul Kirley

The K3 is a QRP rig with a KPA3 100W option. Without the KPA3, the K3's
low-power amplifier becomes its final amplifier instead of being the KPA3's
driver.

I have the board you describe in front of me. Mine is 41 mm by 9mm. The board
is intended to pass the output of the low-power amplifier to the antenna in
case the KPA3 is not part of the K3. It is not used in a K3 that has the KPA3.

The 12V Sense Mod 1N4148 is a mod to the KPA3 and is unrelated to the bypass
module. I installed that mod 12 years ago; your K3S/KPA3(A) probably doesn't
need it.

Re: [Elecraft] loop antenna question

2021-10-23 Thread PAUL GACEK via Elecraft
David

I have a Baby Loop here in England when I am M0SNA.

I’m happy with it but not sure I would buy that style again.

Pros
Amazingly well built
Worked first time yesterday after 20 months of non use (you know, that COVID
thing….)
Quiet
Marginally directional
Great for FT8 or ragchewing
Handles 400w at 40m and close to 1000w at 10m
Works fine with KX3 and a 1000w JUMA amp. Tracks frequency etc but I had to
fiddle around with cables and s/w to get this to work.

Cons
Pain in the proverbial to “retune” when you move 1-2 KHz off frequency … 1-3
seconds retune period
Given above not appropriate for contesting
Steep angle of radiation limiting DX
Requires a rotator
Mounts 7 ft off of ground….not stealthy (my neighbors and wife think its uglier
than sin, however I quite like its look)
Pricey

Somewhere in my blog is post of the Baby Loop….nothing really than the above
www.nomadic.blog

While I have no first hand experience, I think the same company makes a “loop”
that looks like a car jack and is truly stealthy.

Hope this helps.

[Elecraft] External keying auto detect on KX3?

2021-10-21 Thread Paul Huff
My new KX3 is in the mail and I am really looking forward to getting it! There
is a little trick that works on the K2, using a couple of diodes, that allows
you to have both a straight key and a paddle plugged in at the same time and
the rig will auto-detect which one is being used at a given time. Does this
same auto-detect work on the KX3 or do you have to make a menu entry each time
you switch keying devices?

Thanks in advance for any replies.
