Using the utility, erase the settings for 20M and reteach it? Once
trained, leave it in MAN mode for daily use.

Indeed, Andy is correct. The Elecraft serial is STEREO and the Icom is MONO.

I reversed them in my mind and didn’t verify which was which before posting.

The main point behind this was to highlight that the two were not
interchangeable.

The plug has to connect data in, data out, and ground. That requires 3
contacts which cannot be done with a mono plug!

The KAT500 PC DATA port uses a STEREO plug.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 no PC comms

2024-03-12 Thread Chuck Chandler
Two things I've noted with my KAT500 PC comms that you might want to
quickly check:

1. More than once I've forgotten to stop the "KAT500 Remote" app before
running the KAT500 Utility app. Since the Remote app is using the com
port, it has to be stopped first.
2. That plug in the rear of the KAT500 can get partially unplugged with one
more "click" needed to seat it fully and make it work. If that is the
case, neither the Remote or Utility apps will be working.

These have both caught me a few times, hope it is one of them since they
are a quick fix.

2024-03-11 Thread Mike / K5JR
My KXUSB cable suddenly went QRT a few months ago necessitating getting a
replacement. I initially thought the chip on the board had blown up, but it was
OK. I verified that everything was still good by throwing together a temporary
fix with a USB to 9 pin serial cable and a matching 9 pin to *MONO* cable. The
KAT serial port is MONO, not STEREO, as I (not so quickly) discovered,
prompting the time distracting blown chip theory/investigation mentioned above.

Right. That's what I've been using since I bought the KAT500. The utility

I had purchased a used KAT500 from someone that it turns out had bought
it from a 'super station', but had never tried to update the firmware or
use the KAT500 utility to talk to the KAT500. After I got it home, I
tried to check the firmware level, only to find out that I could see the
prompt from the KAT500, but I couldn't talk to it. It turned out that
the FET in the input side of the PC DATA jack was blown, likely from
static charge at the 'super station' and they had sold the KAT500 to my
intermediate owner without telling him it had a blown PC DATA port. I
asked Elecraft support for the part number for the FET, ordered a few
from Mouser, and replaced it (it's an SMD device, so not for the faint
of heart) and that cured the communication issue.

Of course, your mileage may vary.

Unlink the KUSB, which has a USB A connector on one end, and a 9-pin

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 Sleep current?

2023-12-09 Thread G4GNX
Interesting to note that there is no “Idle” button in your image. I guess
that’s elsewhere in the utility.

I would assume that as they’ve used the word “Power” in the utility, I’d expect
it to be the same as the power button on the front panel of the KAT500. From
what you’re saying, it certainly seems to act that way.

My setup has the KAT500 power up when the shack PSU is turned on, but I always
hold the power button on the KAT500 when I turn the radio/s off and of course
all of the LEDs go off.

MY setup is all hard wired so I can’t easily get a meter inline to check
current consumption when the KAT500 is ‘off’. I don’t have consumption issues,
as all of my power is turned off when I leave the shack.

Sorry I can’t be of much help.

From the KAT500 manual:

"Idle Sleep
In some installations a 28004.5 MHz signal may be heard from an oscillator in
the KAT500. If this is an issue, you can shut it down when it is not needed.
Click on Idle Sleep to put a check in the radio button. The oscillator will

From this, one might presume that’s all the ’sleep’ does - turn off the

Supply Current 1.0 A max (200mA typical). I’d assume that the KAT500 would
continue to draw around 200mA whilst in standby and turning off the oscillator
(sleep) would make very little difference.

2023-11-20 Thread Rick Bates, nk7i

Eugene,

The KAT500 will work with almost any radio made in the last 40 years (or
somewhat older), presuming the rig has I/O data available. If it doesn't
read the band data from the radio ( on it's ACC port), there are still
plenty of ways to allow it to do what it needs to do.  The utility is
one feature that allows finer control or management.  But the KAT500 is
serial port only for control purposes.  It doesn't have an ethernet or
wifi system.

The following presumes that you have a serial (or other) port on the
radio for it's control and this answer may be longer than you expect.

In the longer run (larger picture as your station develops), you'll want
more than control of your KAT500.  You'll want to be able to log, manage
mode changes, band/freq changes (rig control), turn your rotor, switch
antenna ports on the rig or KAT500 and myriad assorted other necessary
items.  Not all of the pieces are IP control but require USB or serial
ports, like the KAT500.

You'll find that it's all much simpler to dedicate a computer (from
Raspberry Pi, Arduino up to a full fledged top line gaming system) to
manage the station tasks, hardware and software; even if you're sitting
there able to mash buttons.  Simple just ROCKS and lowers the ...
moments when things get busy or distracted and the brain makes mistakes
(it protects you, a little).

I did that (ALL station elements managed) and it runs quite easily.
Then I ran the station equally as well, by operating the computer that
runs the station, remotely.  Two factors present a challenge, an
adequate audio path for phone/cw, and latency (the time it takes to get
from the radio to your ears, ad vice versa, no matter the path).
(Remote can be across the room or anywhere with internet.)

I chose and use TeamViewer for computer control and Skype for audio.
(Like most hams, I'm cheap and those apps are free and available on many
platforms which gives a LOT of options from phone, tablet or another
computer.)  Plus your contact log entries are (correctly) from the
station, not where you happen to be. I've run my stations while
traveling much of NA and HI while on road trips and it's still fun and a
great way to keep in touch with the local gang.

Depending on the OS of your choice, there are many options to choose
from.  Windows has FAR more options for the moment, the rig control app
of your choice, a good logging program (integrated suites do much of
these), KAT500 utility (check/verify readings and override choices if
more than one antenna), amp control if you have one (KPA500 or KPA1500
utility apps), rotor and antenna management (PSTrotator with the SteppIR
functions) and if you want, an IP power switch for shutting it all down
and/or rebooting. (A remote power on for the K3 or K4, when off, they
are OFF.)

If you are a knob turner ham or a mouse clicker (or both), running the
station is much easier when you integrate all of the aspects on one
screen.  It allows quicker band changes (QSY and everything follows
along) and a wealth of information on the screen, as well as the
hardware displays.  You watch ONE place (the display), less movement
required (except your eyes).

Wanna make a couple quick contacts from work during your lunch break or
while visiting family for the holidays?  Now you know how.

Only have a tiny closet for the actual station hardware but no where to
put the operating chair?  Now you can operate it remotely (be careful
about heat removal in this case).

For now, you're working on the KAT500 with the utility; expand beyond
that over time and integrate everything.  That means look at what you
want the station to accomplish for you.  Wise choices now makes it
simpler later as you integrate more.

And the answer to your question is yes, you'll want something to manage
the KAT500 app, all the time.  But it must be via it's serial port.

Think bigger, go beyond.

Rick nk7i

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500?

2023-11-20 Thread Rick Tavan
I use KAT500 Utility remotely by running it on a small, inexpensive server
computer at the remote station and displaying and controlling it via Chrome
Remote Desktop. (There are several equivalent remote desktop programs.)
Note that you can not run KAT500 Utility and KAT500 Remote Server at the
same time because they both use the one serial port into the KAT500 device.

This arrangement has been completely satisfactory for me because the
settings I make with Utility endure for many months, only occasionally
changing in response to antenna changes. In fact, since I am there at the
remote site when changing antennas, I rarely need to operate Utility
remotely. But I certainly can. KAT500 Remote is the control point in use
when actually operating on the air with KAT500.

Hello there. I am not currently an owner of any elecraft product, but I am
seriously considering a KAT500 for use with older analog radios. I hope this is
the right place to ask because the elecraft website page for subscribing to
this list (https://elecraft.com/pages/community) only mentions
"KX1/K1/K2/K3/KX3/P3/KPA500" but here goes.

I am interested in the native capabilities of the remote control software I
looked on the elecraft website and only found this manual which only covers
installation of the software:

Excellent. thank you. I’ve been advised that I should download the kat500
utility and look in the help files for more details since, as you point out,
without a KAT500 the software will limit my ability to comb through the
features.
Thanks all!

But I am interested in what screens are behind the buttons such as Power, Tune,

can watch that goes through this program? I understand that many folks are
using node-red for control of the KAT, but right now I'm looking to see the
functions of basic application.

Generally, I am wondering if the software supports:

  1. Setting the SWR threshold -- below which, the tuner will consider a
tuning solution to be "done"
Yes - See Configuration tab, SWR Thresholds
  2. Once the tuning solution is found, the manual changing the L's and C's to
fine tune the match as much as possible and then store to memory
Yes - See Operate tab, Capacitance and Inductance adjusters.
  3. Settings for which antenna should be used for which bands
Yes - See Configuration tab, Antennas
  4. Can an antenna be set for use with multiple bands (like OCF dipole)? Or
only one band per antenna?
Yes, any antenna port can be assigned to any bands 160-6 via individual check
boxes or All. See Configuration tab, Antennas.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 beta 2.16

2023-11-13 Thread Andy Durbin
"Based on the release notes, I think this means that the Yaesu FTDX3000 (and
others) can operate in enhanced mode, like the Kenwood, with both frequency
and band data. Is that correct? If so, what kind of cabling is needed for the
Yaesu for enhanced mode? Can enhanced mode function if another device (pc
running MacLogger via USB) is also polling?"

My direct experience is limited to Kenwood TS-590S but I think Yaesu rigs can
be interface with KAT500 and KPA500 in a similar way.

KAT500 never requests data and is configured as a passive RS-232 receiver. For
KAT500 to receive any useful data something else must be polling the rig and
the KAT500 listens to the rig's replies. For a station using KPA500 and
KAT500 the typical source of the polling is the KPA500 which, when Serial rig
type is selected, polls a connected rig with IF, FA, and FB commands. KPA500
uses the rig responses to derive band. If KAT500 is listening to the rig
responses using a suitable Y cable then it extracts the rig's TX frequency from
the IF, FA, and FB data words. (KPA500 only cares about band. KAT500 needs
frequency with 1 kHz resolution.)

The KPA500 does not have to be the polling source. Any application that
includes IF, FA, and FB in its rig command sequence can be used. The required
cable would have rig RS-232 receiver connected to KPA500 (or PC application)
RS-232 transmitter. The rig's RS-232 transmitter would be fanned out to
KPA500, KAT500, and if applicable a PC applications RS-232 receiver. (Caution
- only one transmitter is wired in this cable).

That's the basic idea. The average hoarder could assemble the cable for next
to no cost. Elecraft sells a cable for Kenwood and perhaps also one for Yuesu).

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500: Not remembering antenna configuration

2023-04-13 Thread JK Hooper via Elecraft
Hi all,

Here is an update on my KAT500 Mac software utility problem, described below.

I am able to configure my KAT500 just fine with the Windows version of the
KAT500 Utility using Windows 10 O/S, so, effectively, my “problem” of
configuring the KAT500 is solved.

The Mac version of the KAT500 utility does not appear to be working correctly
with macOS Ventura 13.2.1, at least on my computer.

I have let Elecraft support know.

Special thanks to Andy K3WYC who emailed me quite a few times with suggestions
on troubleshooting and he pointed the way for me to track things down.

KAT500 gets its power from the K4D auxiliary DC port.

KAT500 is running latest firmware version 02.05. Mac Utility is version
1.21.10.9. I have reinstalled firmware. No change. I have reset to factory
configuration, then reloaded configuration, no change.

Some “for examples”:

1. Each time I open the KAT500 utility, the Maximum power (watts) on the Edit
Configuration tab reverts to “1” watt. I previously selected “Optimize for
KAT500.”

2. I will assign 20 m to both ANT 2 and ANT 3, for example, but this
configuration reverts to no “Enabled” antennas and Preferred is “Ant 2.”

On the other hand, the KAT500 appears to have correctly memorized the tuning
settings. I operate with KAT500 in “MAN” and have previously gone through the
bands memorizing tuning settings.

The specific problem I have is that, for 6 meters, I want to use ANT 2 but the
KAT500 is not letting me change from ANT 3.

And while I am not using ANT 1, I’m not able to configure a band/antenna
combination such that I can only switch between ANT 2 and ANT 3.

Thanks in advance,

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 - can't change antennas on 6 meters

2023-03-21 Thread Dennis Moore
I'd still suspect the config settings, this test just showed that the
KAT-500 is doing well mechanically. The tuner is getting a signal from
the K3 telling it what band you're on so appears to be limiting your
options based on that band. You can repeat the mode/ant test with the
radio off, you should get the same results as with the control cables
disconnected.

In the utility, Edit Configuration, Antenna tab, go through each of the
band settings and enable whatever antennas should be available on that
band. If you've already done that and it still isn't working right, I
don't know where to go next.

Thanks for the suggestion. Good test.

It turns out that Yes, I can change antennas now on 50 MHz when I disconnect
control cables. H.

I reconnect the control cables, and the symptom of not being able to change to
antennas other than antenna 3 on 50 MHz, returns.

So one conclusion: maybe not the KAT500 settings.

I had something similar on my KAT-500 where I could not get to antenna
connection 3.

What I did was to do the update of the software and then open it to
manually turn on antenna 3 and it was fine.

I have the cable if you need to do that.

I subscribe to all the Elecraft lists and use individual downloads. Then my
mail app puts them all into one folder, so I can scan them all or just look for
the subject line.

Works well for me.

On the multiple lists vs. one list:
As long as the individual product is placed in the subject line,
multiple products are easily dealt with using filters.
Filter the posts any way you want (including deleting them) - learn how
to use filters in your email client and you can do things such as moving
the particular post to a specific folder in your email client list.

It is not hard, just read the section of your email client instructions
on filters.

I would prefer one list - I have been working that way for at least 10
years.
As Jack said, it depends on putting the product in the subject line - if
not, you can move it manually.
BTW, I use Thunderbird for my email client, and I receive individual
posts. Working with the digest is another problem entirely.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 frequency memories question

2022-10-02 Thread john
As Don said it is not difficult to sort by subject. I also prefer a single
list and often find it educational and enjoyable to read about Elecraft
products that I do not own. Towertalk does not have separate lists for
verticals, Beverages, Yagis, rotators, towers, grounding, etc. One list is
easy to follow, especially if posts are on topic. Last month there were
about 200 posts on this list so it is not that difficult to even manually
pick the ones of interest.

There is a lot of overlap between the various devices, so it is good to list
each involved.

It is quite understandable for users to have set up external email lists for
the devices, but don’t expect us to know about them, which explains my surprise
(and delight) when I discovered the iogroups KPA500 list.
Learning things from other users is always good and mostly enjoyable!

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 frequency memories question

2022-10-02 Thread Rick Bates, NK7I
It is, here.  The device being commented on, should be part of the
header when a thread is started so folks can read it or skip it.

But it's MUCH nicer to have separate groups for each item.  One may not
have a KX2, KAT500 or other Elecraft device and the often numerous and
ponderously long threads can add up to a LOT of email to be deleted.

Being a member of the specific device lists, limits that and the email
noise floor.  Being on a targeted list improves the chances of getting
an accurate answer or solution.

Having a varied interest in many things, I get a low of 50 emails a day,
sometimes peaking near 300 per day or more.  By limiting to the specific
groups of interest I find I can manage it better and when it gets too
noisy on a topic, I can drop out of that thread (if the list is on
groups.io, most of mine are).  Thankfully the lists don't 'blow up'
often so the daily average is under 100 most times.

Almost ALL of them are quickly deleted, less than 5% are answered and
under 1% get saved for future reference (that's what archive diving is
all about).

Can I wire a standard 9 pin serial cable to the 3 pin connector on the
KAT500? Is it 5V only or does it use RS232 levels?

What is the pin out?

I had a similar problem a couple years ago. It turned out to be a lightning
arrestor device on the 600 ohm OWL that was arcing over. I replaced it with a
higher capacity unit, and the problem disappeared.

No, it’s always been on manual since I got it. And it never used to do this.
Nothing is changed in the shack except in using a 4:1 balun instead of a 1:1.
The timing is similar.
Tomorrow I’ll reinstall that and see if it persists.
An arc outside is a thought too. I will check my open wire feed line as well.
Thanks for the replies.

2022-02-03 Thread Jack Brindle via Elecraft
It sounds like you may have the KAT500 set for AUTO. Change it to MAN and it
should perform much better.

The rapid signal changes associated with SSB operation can cause issues with
the sampling of the power in the directional coupler,
causing readings that make the KAT think it needs to do a tune. By using MAN
mode you get to decide when a tune is needed,
making everyone much happier.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 Attenuator

2021-12-30 Thread Wes
I think the only thing that is for sure is that this is very poorly documented.
The schematic shows two resistors, the assembly manual shows one, and the
correct value of the one (by my measurement) is unknown.  Whether or not it is,
or isn't, used is another unknown.  It seems to me that Elecraft could comment
on this and clear this up, but that hasn't been forthcoming.  Silence isn't
always golden.

Is it reasonable to believe that the attenuator was one of those design
elements that might have been deemed necessary at one time but then the
designers changed their mind for the finished product?  I think so. The
mysterious R7 may have been left off of the final circuit board precisely to
cause such a bad mismatch that it would be obvious to operator, software, or
both, and so that corrective action could be taken.

Hi,
Having difficulty loading latest version of the Kat500 utility. The
version I have is 01.75, the utility indicates that 2.05 is available. However
the new version does not load but the message “ Input hex file is corrupt,

I have the same issue attempting to load a Mac and Linux.

Perhaps 2.05 is not available? Or is there a fix I am not aware of, or perhaps
it is not necessary to upgrade?

Thank you for your interest. Help would be appreciated.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 Attenuator

2021-12-15 Thread Andy Durbin
" Have we, in fact, established that this attenuator is enabled at any point of
the tune cycle? Because if not, then we're all spun up for nothing."

KAT500 Serial Command Reference Revised 8/18/2021 firmware version 02.00 says:

"ATTN Enable Attenuator GET format: ATTN; SET/RESPONSE format: ATTN0;
(disabled) or ATTN1; (enabled). Selects relay K22, which switches in an
attenuator resistor. It may take a few milliseconds after issuing an ATTNx;
setter before the relay changes. Firmware releases the attenuator if it detects
power high enough to damage to the attenuator. Firmware normally inserts the
attenuator during “full search tune” to present a more consistent load to a
transceiver during tune operations. The attenuator is disabled if the tune
power is too low with the attenuator in place."

This version was released so the document was compatible with firmware 2.05
changes.

As I have said earlier in this thread I see no evidence that ATTN changes state
during a "full search tune".

We are left with an attenuator design change that no one seems to understand
and documentation that may not be correct. Whether that is "spun up for
nothing" probably depends on one's perspective.

elements that might have been deemed necessary at one time but then the
designers changed their mind for the finished product?  I think so. The
mysterious R7 may have been left off of the final circuit board precisely to
cause such a bad mismatch that it would be obvious to operator, software, or
both, and so that corrective action could be taken.

"I took the cover off mine and verified that the shunt resistor was missing and
the series one measured 228 ohm. Clearly, if this is dynamically switched
while seeking a match the poor exciter is going to be totally confused. "

The list and private replies I have seen seem to show the attenuator with both
resistors presents a reasonable match to the exciter. The attenuator with R7
removed presents a horrible match to the exciter.

With the single resistor attenuator active my TS-590S load is so bad that it
folds back to very lower power output, far too low for the tuner to continue
the tune cycle, so it would then switch out the attenuator. However, I don't
see any sign that the attenuator is ever switched in circuit on my KAT500. I
have only recently added ATTN to my monitoring and recording so I have no data
from firmware 1.75 or earlier. If I get bored I may load 1.75 to see if I can
detect attenuator activation.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 Attenuator

2021-12-14 Thread Wes
I took the cover off mine and verified that the shunt resistor was missing and
the series one measured 228 ohm.  Clearly, if this is dynamically switched while
seeking a match the poor exciter is going to be totally confused.  The
attenuator should have been implemented with two 30 ohm resistors in the first
place.  What motivated them to remove one is a mystery.

The fact that mine appears to have changed value says to me, that while clever,
the use of the bottom panel for a heat sink is problematic.  I suspect this is
also the case in the K3/K3S LPA where there are a lot of FET failures.

SWR/PWR meter in the line between the radio and KAT500 shows the same values.

In receive mode, I hear a relay click when selecting the ATTENUATOR and again
when de-selecting the ATTENUATOR.  Also noted the RX signal drop about ~3 dB
{maybe less} when the ATTENUATOR is selected.

I did notice initially when selecting the ATTENUATOR it seemed to be
inconsistent in results for a few times.  I figure this is some issue with
relay contacts.   Once exercised 3 or 4 times,  no further strange operation
was observed.

Don't have a clue if the resistors in question are installed or not.

I recall that certain ICOM tuners insert an attenuator on the input when
running the tune routine.  This is said to provide a constant impedance/load
to the transmitter while the tuner runs through its range of L and C values.
This of course is for a radio that folds back power when the SWR is >3:1 or so.

KAT500 has an input attenuator that may, under certain conditions, be
activated during a full search tune.   Page 1 rev C of the KAT500 schematic
shows the attenuator is a divider consisting of R6 and R7 which are both 39
ohm.  My KAT500 serial number 2609 does not have R7 fitted and R7 is shown as
not populated in Figure 17 of KAT500 User's Manual Rev C6.

The removal of R7 changes the potential divider into a simple series resistor
and my measurements show my KAT500 presents a very poor match to my TS-590
exciter when the attenuator is active.  In this example the KAT500 was in
bypass and connected to a nominal 50 ohm dummy load.  The impedance presented
to my TS-590 by KAT500 was measured with an LP-100A:

Att Out:  R 48.1, X 2.4, Pwr 4.48, SWR 1.06
Att In:  R 22.3, X 162.6, Pwr 0.55,  SWR 9.98

Do other KAT500 owners see similar results? (Attenuator can be switched
in/out with KAT500 utility)

Can someone please explain why the attenuator was changed.

Thanks and 73,

Andy -

My KAT500 (s/n 2916) behaves pretty much the same way. I don't know if R7
is present, but tuning into my normal antenna produces these results:

Man/Auto (doesn't matter): Att Out = SWR 1.00
 "" " " Att IN = SWR 99.99

My guess is that the KAT500 cannot get a strong enough signal to tune
properly with the Attenuator IN. Interestingly, when it was new, it did not
have that problem. Perhaps R7 has failed.

PS - Where did you find KAT500 rev C schematics?

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 beta 2.04

2021-10-07 Thread Dave
Given we are talking about Beta software, I think I have located another
issue with the KAT500...

If I use any sort of fast turn around transmit/receive cycle software,
like VARA, under Winlink, or ARQ type software modem, the tuner tries to
re-tune every time a most transmit cycles, even with a good SWR on the
antenna.

My antenna has 1.5:1, and if in bypass all works fine. If in MAN, the
tuner goes into a tune cycle... Which faults the KPA500. Any suggestions?

I do not have a computer connected to the KAT500, but could connect one
if needed.

Here is a more complete list:

* An enabled antenna is not selectable with mode BYP

* F; interrogation returns zero after CAT induced band change

* Unexpected behavior for FCCS and FCMD

* Fault code 01 when attempting to tune with low power

* Fault 2 leaves KAT500 in bypass when fault cleared

* Disabling "Tune on QSY" option does not prevent RF count re-tune if CAT
frequency is available to KAT500.

All the above are fixed in beta 2.04.

There are also changes in full tune implementation that make is less likely
that TX power foldback will result in early termination with a poor match.

FCCS, FCMD, MTM and MTA commands which did not work as documented have been
replaced by FDT.  (See command reference for details)

For anyone using CAT control, the biggest change is that the CAT provided TX
frequency takes priority over the counter frequency and counter will no longer
cause a re-tune at start of, or during, TX.

(All the above are based on my notes and the Elecraft release notes should be
taken as the official version of the changes.)

I don't have a complete summary in one place. I'll try to put one together
later. A few that come to mind are:

Does not fault when tuning with low power Less likely to end a full tune
sequence with a poor match Antenna selection logic fixed in BYP mode

"Second, this firmware is marked 'Beta'. I typically don't install stuff
until it is the production version. So are the changes/enhancements
significant enough and the Beta is tested well enough such that I should go
ahead and install the firmware the next time I'm at the ham station in
November (I operate remotely)? The currently installed firmware is 01.75. "

I don't load alpha or beta software unless I expect to gain something from
it. If you have no problems with your current installation, and don't need
any of the new features, why take the risk.

"Third, am I correct that the I can use an earlier version of the KAT500

'play nice' with the new firmware? The currently installed KAT500 Utility
is v1.16.7.25 that has a 2016 copyright date. ""

The old utility has features that are no longer supported in the new
firmware. The new firmware has features that are not supported by the
older utility. However, basic functionality such as displaying and editing
the tuning solution should still be compatible.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 beta 2.04

2021-10-06 Thread Andy Durbin
"Could you note some of the ‘fixes’ that are not noted in the release notes?"

I don't have a complete summary in one place. I'll try to put one together
later. A few that come to mind are:

Does not fault when tuning with low power
Less likely to end a full tune sequence with a poor match
Antenna selection logic fixed in BYP mode

"Second, this firmware is marked ‘Beta’. I typically don’t install stuff until
it is the production version. So are the changes/enhancements significant
enough and the Beta is tested well enough such that I should go ahead and
install the firmware the next time I’m at the ham station in November (I
operate remotely)? The currently installed firmware is 01.75. "

I don't load alpha or beta software unless I expect to gain something from it.
If you have no problems with your current installation, and don't need any of
the new features, why take the risk.

"Third, am I correct that the I can use an earlier version of the KAT500
utility to install the new firmware and that older utility software will ‘play
nice’ with the new firmware? The currently installed KAT500 Utility is
v1.16.7.25 that has a 2016 copyright date. ""

The old utility has features that are no longer supported in the new firmware.
The new firmware has features that are not supported by the older utility.
However, basic functionality such as displaying and editing the tuning solution
should still be compatible.

All my testing was done with alpha loads sent to me by email. I copied them to
a local directory, pointed the KAT utility to that directory, and then loaded.
Never saw the issue you report.

Utility is a standalone exe. If you don't like the new one simply run the
earlier version. I don't remember what the last officially released version
was but I have several versions filed away.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 - does it earth antenna connections

2021-10-01 Thread Andy Durbin
"You don't need to manually choose an antenna on startup. It remembers what
was last used on each band (assuming you are using an Elecraft or Kenwood
rig with it). I think it will still remember the last used even in a dumb
situation without knowledge from the radio; it just needs the radio support
to have "per-band" memory."

No radio support is needed for antenna per-band memory. All the KAT500 needs
to know is the TX frequency. It then decides which antenna to select based on
"band" and the antenna preferences defined by the KAT500 PC Utility.

A weakness of this design is that, if only RF sensing is used for frequency
determination, the KAT500 may fault due to a mismatched load before the
appropriate antenna has been selected for the new band.

Antenna selection can be performed by serial command but, even though my
controller is capable of that, I have seen no reason to replicate the antenna
selection logic already built into the KAT500. There is a caveat though -
the internal antenna selection logic doesn't work correctly when KAT500 is in
BYP mode. (The workaround for that defect is to never use BYP mode. MAN mode
with Byp active is electrically the same and antenna selection does work
correctly in that configuration).

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 - does it earth antenna connections

2021-09-30 Thread Jack Brindle via Elecraft
This is not quite correct. It does not connect unused antenna ports to ground.
It does have a GDT and 1 meg resistor to ground on each port, however.
When power is off to the KAT500, ANT1 is connected directly to the input port.

But you are correct in that it has three output antenna ports.

Or connect a dummy load via a power meter (Bird 43) to antenna 1, so you can

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 - does it earth antenna connections

2021-09-30 Thread Greg Mitchell
You don't need to manually choose an antenna on startup. It remembers what
was last used on each band (assuming you are using an Elecraft or Kenwood
rig with it). I think it will still remember the last used even in a dumb
situation without knowledge from the radio; it just needs the radio support
to have "per-band" memory. I could be wrong. I know it remembers fine with
my K3.

Interesting idea.
I have two antennas, so I could connect my ground to #1 and antennas to #2
and #3?
Just manually choose an antenna on start-up. Hm-m-m-m-m.

It has 3 antenna connections, not 4. It grounds the unused ones and selects
antenna 1 on power-off. I put my dummy-load on antenna 1 so my station is
disconnected from the antennas when powered down.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500/KPA500 with IC-7610?

2021-08-01 Thread Ken Winterling
I have had the IC-7610 and the KPA500/KAT500 for over three years and it
works very well when I switch bands with the intention of transmitting. My
"nit" to pick is that the KAT500, as has been said, can not be preset by
the IC-7610 in receive. It can preset the KPA500, for all bands but WARC,
by using a DIY "band data" voltage cable (Icom doesn't support band data
voltages for the WARC bands).

If I want to *listen* to different frequencies on the IC-7610 that are on
different antennas connected to the KAT500 I have to manually select the
antenna on the KAT500. This makes scanning frequencies on the IC-7610
impossible.

The KPA1500, that combines an amp and antenna matcher (aka tuner), can read
Icom CI-V data and preset both the amp and the "tuner". This feature should
have been/should be available for the KPA500 and KAT500. I believe the
KPA500 and KAT500 can read data from Kenwood and Yaesu transceivers. Why
was Icom left out of the mix?

Yes, I believe you're right, Andy. At least the CI-V is capable of
including frequency data - but KAT doesn't read it.

The KPA does read band data, presumably from voltage.

KPA500 only needs to know the band but KAT500 needs to know the actual
frequency within the band. Isn't ICOM band voltage exactly that - a band
indicator not a frequency indicator?

To implement the interface properly you'd have to know the exact TX
frequency which I think could be extracted from CI-V data.

May work for you but are you using KAT500 antenna port selection? My issues
with RF detection as the primary tuning mechanism include the fact that the
KAT500 will fault before it has time to select the correct antenna for the band
in use.

I need the KAT500 and KPA500 to be configured before I transmit. I suspect
that anyone who uses KAT500 antenna port selection would too.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500/KPA500 with IC-7610?

2021-08-01 Thread Lyn Norstad
I'll chime in too, echoing what Ken says. All you need is the "tune" cable
to connect the KAT500 to the rig for control of the Tune function. I also
use the LDG cable (just because it's easy ...) but you can easily make your
own. (I am not familiar with the Ten-a-Tuner mentioned by Buck ... perhaps
it is the same?)

I prefer to use the Elecraft Utilities for both KPA and KAT500 for all
tuning and setup settings, but the Tune button on the rig (or tuner) works
fine as well (it automatically supplies the proper power for tuning).

Generally, for digital operation I set the rig to about 18% power. For SSB,
up to 25%. All the rig settings are automatically stored with each saved
config file.

The only downside to using Icom gear with the KPA/KAT500 is that Elecraft
does not "read" the frequency "voltage" indicator and therefore does not
preset the tuner to the correct values without transmitting. That
ultimately is not a big deal, but does produce a 2 or 3 second delay for
tuning when first transmitting after a band or significant frequency change.
I generally hit the utility's Tune button as soon as I change so the
receiver sees a good match.

Chuck,

I, too, have been using an IC-7610 with the KAT500/KPA500 combination for
several years. My IC-7610 TUNER jack is connected to the TUNE jack on the
rear of the KAT500 via a LDG Electronics IC-PAC-6 cable. While the TUNE
button on the IC-7610 or the TUNE button on the KAT500 activates the
IC-7610 10W tune function and causes the KAT500 to tune, the Elecraft
KAT500 manual stated "If a tune cycle is performed, 20 watts or more will
produce more accurate tuning".

My procedure is to switch to RTTY mode on the IC-7610 and key the rig. The
KAT500 matches the load and I return the rig to the previous mode. This
literally takes only a few seconds. Yes, the TUNE button works but I have
found that sometimes my method produces a better match. Be sure to follow
the KAT500 "training" procedure to store your various bands and frequencies
in the tuner so they can be quickly recalled.

As has been mentioned, you have to manually adjust your output as you
switch between the amp and full power. I have a Brother P-Touch label on
the amp to remind me about max power input.

As for obtaining a tuner cable, you can get one from LDG, and other
vendors. The IC-PAC-6 cable is 6' long while the IC-PAC cable is 14" long.

There are good connectors and "good looking" connectors. Since we
primarily intend to use the connectors and not "look" at them, then one
should be aware of differences.    If the connector does not have the
company name or MIL number on it, then it is most likely only a "good
looking" connector or counterfeit knock-off.   In fact, regarding some
of the ham fest connectors, I'd  be ashamed to put a company name on
them too.    Be aware of no name connectors.

Amphenol has been a leader in quality connectors for RF.   Cannon and
Neutric are good for audio brands.  There's others but be aware there
are many counterfeit connectors in the market place. Bargain connectors
generally turn out to be NO BARGAIN because they cause issues, now or
later.   You've spent several thousand dollars on your station and you
are going to trust its operation to a $1 connector?  That is false economy.

Also, when soldering the center pin on a PL-259, do NOT let solder build
up on the outside of the male pin.  It will expand the center contact
when inserted into the SO-239 and problems will abound.

And discard those "Amazon Special" PL-259s. Use only quality
connectors.  It is not worth it to use off-spec connectors - you are
witness to the pain and heartache they can cause.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 ANT1 problem

2021-07-12 Thread Dave
I am using the Times Microwave connectors on Times Microwave LMR-400 for my HF
antennas. Except a Belsen 8267 jumper around the rotor to Yagi. The Times
Mocrowave connectors for RG8, 214, 214, 9913, and LMR400. I had the LMR400 left
over from a job so no cost except the UJF male and one UHF female connectors.
The PolyPhasers are type N female. As long as the coax is not swinging in the
wind or run around a rotor then the LMR400 is fine.

Hardline for my cable runs on HF would be overkill as far as loss since runs
are under 100 feet for each of three antennas.

Amphenol is the “gold standard” for RG8/213 installations.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 ANT1 problem

2021-07-12 Thread David Christ
5/32” inches is 0.156” which is 3.968 mm. So if the Asian manufacturer
considers 4 mm easier and close enough the pin will be oversize.WW II
drawings give the pin diameter as max/min 0.158/0.154 . 5/32 is right in the
middle of this range. I don’t have the MILSPEC documentation but guess this is
likely the dimension. Whether that is enough to create problems, I don’t know.

But I also saw a drawing where the pin diameter was specified as large as 4.01
mm.

Buying only from manufacturers with a known track record of QA and following
MIL Specs seems to be wise.
