[Elecraft] K2: Alignment and Test Part II
After setting L30 for 6v at R30 at 4 MHz, I am reading 1.53V at 3.5 MHz. While this is above the 1.5V limit, is it a little bit too close for comfort or is it OK? The voltages for the other band edges are all well within the specified range. Also, when adjusting the filter BFO values I found that the BFO frequency being displayed would sometimes slowly alternate back-and-fourth between two close frequencies. I believe this is because the frequency counter is being used to display the frequency and that this is normal. Is this the case? Re: [Elecraft] driving external PA with K2
To supplement Lee's email, I would say that ALC is a way to protect the PA from overdrive. For example, if I set proper ALC level at my ICPW-1 to get only 500 watts (the full output of PW-1 is 1 kw), even when I turn the RF power control on my IC756pro2 to full scale, the ALC feedback voltage from PW-1 will automatically limit my pro2 to an output power of less than 30 watts. In the case of K2, the output power is less than 15 watts. I do not see any danger to overdrive a PA. Clearly, K2/100 is a different story. 73 Johnny Siu VR2XMC - Original Message - From: Lee Buller [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Mike W [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: Elecraft Reflector elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Friday, July 09, 2004 6:46 PM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] driving external PA with K2 Mike, You already have all the info you need, but I would like to say you will need no ALC at all. If you keep the rig linear and not over drive the amp...there is no need for ALC. This feature is kind of a left over from when tubes were tubes and men were men (sorry Ladies, trying to make a bad pun) Of course, you will not over drive a typical amp with 15 watt of mighty mojo. Now, if you have a KPA100, that is a different story altogther, but I do not want to digress. The main point here is keep the rig linear and do not over drive the amp. Re: [Elecraft] K2: Alignment and Test Part II
The VCO voltage reading is within the tolerances quoted by Elecraft so is normal. However this is not the whole story as you have to look at the results for all bands rather than just this one and ensure that they also fall within the stated limits. On my K2 on 40m with 80m set as advised in VCO alignment (P61) in Alignment and Test, Part II, 7000kHz was below the quoted figure of greater than 1.5V. This meant a juggling act to balance up the readings. What I ended up with was: 3500kHz = 2.40V 4000kHz = 6.85V 7000kHz = 1.50V 7300kHz = 2.95V. On all other bands the VCO voltage readings were well within the tolerances of greater than 1.5V and less than 7.5V. [Elecraft] Re: K2 amplifier keying circuit PCB?
Hi Mike: I happened to find the K2 amplifier keying circuit partial mod kit on Elecraft's site. The write up mentions, at the bottom, that you might be putting together a small PCB for this circuit. Do you have any of the PCB's available for sale? If so, can you email me the details? I'm replying to you directly AND via the because I've received several recent similar queries from Elecraft reflector members as well. That article on the Elecraft web site really needs to be REMOVED because it's no longer accurate. I wrote it WAY BACK before Wayne came up with the 8R line T-R keying feature for the K2. It used a different keying line which did NOT pre-key the T-R line and which would not be nearly as satisfactory as using the 8R line keying. I never got into making the PC boards available... the 8r Line keying became available soon after I posted my original article and one of the reflector members had a small run of keying boards made up to use the 8R line, so I put my article on hold at that time. I believe that Elecraft MIGHT be offering a set of parts (only, no PC board) to allow you to connect to the 8R line in a 'basic' K2, to provide amplifier T-R keying, but it's neither an 'official' Elecraft mod, nor an 'official' Elecraft kit. And... I may be way off base here... they may offer nothing along this line. I've sent a couple other folks to Elecraft with this request and no one has ever replied to me that they did or did not obtain what they needed from Elecraft. Someone really needs to come up with a stand-alone T-R line keying circuit, using the basic K2. I should have done it long ago, but figgered someone else would do it. Re: [Elecraft] Re: K2 amplifier keying circuit PCB?
Hi The K60XV option has the external amplifier keying circuit built in although it uses a 2N7000 as the output transistor so it will not handle a large current. I would guess the 2N7000 could be replaced with a IRF830 or IRL620 like in the KPA100 if you needed up to one amp and 200 volts. The keying output is on pin 2 of J2 you will need to bring this out to a connector on the back of the K2. The standard connector seems to be a RCA jack. Even if you do not need the transverter IF connections the addition of the 60 meter band and the keying circuit may make this option something you may want. It looks much better than a home brew perf board circuit. Don Brown - Original Message - From: Tom Hammondmailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] To: M. [Elecraft] KX1/pm with Capacity Hat
i read all the posts about how well capacity hats work so i decided to build one for my 8 foot whip. i used a SO-239 (UHF Female) back shell (UG-106/U) to attach it. i took a 9 inch pie pan and drilled a hole in the center and used the UG-106 to make the vertical to horizontal attachment. i put the pie pan at 6 feet up the whip. The solid capacity hat doesn't cause a drag problem because i don't walk very fast. (My XYL thinks i look like the guy who shrunk the kids, really nerdy, but hey, us nerds got us to the Moon, so far the geeks have only produced Pac Man). i tried it out on the QRP Fox ( K0FRP in GA, 1200 miles) on 20 meters last night. There was no difference in receive strength with and without the hat. i was using my KX1 with internal NiCad's and had a 13 foot drag wire counterpoise. The standard whip was running 1.9 SWR and 2.2W, the added cap hat had 1.4 SWR and 3W. Field strength went up 30% with the hat. Pretty significant improvement. In this case there is more improvement from matching the antenna (which allowed more power output from the Tx) than getting the current point higher in the antenna. RE: [Elecraft] My K2 transmitter sounds odd
I had the same problem as you. However, the K2 was GREAT on the air. I finally traced the problem to the fact that both were using the same power supply (cured most of it) and to much transmit power - used a dummy load for both the K2 and the 706 with the K2 at about 1 watt. As my XYL is a ham I put the 706 in a different room, she listened and provided feedback on a HT. It appears that even with the rigs on different power supplies (one on battery) if they are close enough for you to control both they interact in some way. Re: [Elecraft] KPA-100 Q1,Q2,Q3,Q4 screws to heat simk question
Brian, Something is wrong - 1/4 inch screws should be plenty long - dumb question, are you really using the 1/4 inch screws? - they are NOT the black ones. The only thing the screw should pass through is the lockwasher and the transistor (yes the thermal pad too) before it hits the heatsink. Those transistors MUST sit in direct contact with the heat sink or they will not last very long, so do check carefully to be certain there is no gap below the transistors. [Elecraft] Problem? Don't know
73's everyone, I don't know if I have a problem or not. I have made several CW contacts with my newly built K2 during the past week. Most of them, the incoming signal goes in and out to a certain extent. For the most part, I can read most of the message but some it gets lost in the mud. The problem is, I am transmitting at 5-watts and everyone is giving me 559 reports. Could I have a problem with my receiver or is the 20-40 meter bands really that flakey lately? I'm using 100' of wire strung 12' off the ground at the balum going to about 30' up a tree. The other side is about 70' of wire thrown over the roof because there is nothing back there to connect to because my property ends 5' beyond. The antenna is fed by about 50' of RG8X. My K2 has the antenna tuner built in and gives me a 1.1:1. I can almost convince myself that there is no problem becuase I am answering contacts that nobody else is coming back to. If only I had more experience... If only I had started this 40-years ago... But then again, IF a frog had wings, he wouldn't bump his butt on the ground... Re: [Elecraft] Problem? Don't know
You may have better results with a dipole antenna, or at least you will be able to tell if it is the band. A very low antenna as you describe, 12 ft., radiates mostly straight up and is only good within your state except for exceptional propagation conditions. Try something from a tree to the peak of the house roof, if gable type. You can forshorten a dipole to 60 per cent of normal and use a tuner and ladder line to get it working not only on 40m but other bands as well. Thus about a 40 foot antenna can give a good dipole at 40m if tuned with parallel line and tuner. 72, Stuart K5KVH ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. See more at my website: http://homepage.mac.com/jfmenard/PhotoAlbum29.html It will do the job for now until I build the real batterie kit for the K2, that is for sure, more convenient to use. 73 === Jean-François Ménard / VA2VYZ [EMAIL PROTECTED] Elecraft K2 #4130 Amateur Radio Club of Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada Web site: http://homepage.mac.com/jfmenard === ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] RE: K2 4039, Failing transmitter tests
Hi, I have steadily and carefully built my K2 and it has passed all the tests so far with flying colours, including 40m RX. Now I have just completed the transmitter stages, and attempted the first tx test... Ah problems. Well things have gone well so far!! Even a bottle of Hoegaarden did not help... This is what happens. 1.40m rx working fine. 2. Connect dummy load etc 3. Set for 2.0 output, tune to 7100 4. Press and hold tune. A bleep in the headphones, the output limiter on the PSU flicks in cutting the power briefly and Elecraft displays on the K2. (I have tried another PSU (3amp) but the same result) If the power is turned down to .2 or so it will stay in tune mode Upon checking the antenna connection, there appears to be a short between earth and the centre of the BNC.. (Using a DVM) This cannot be correct? I have tried another PSU (3amp) but the same result. Perhaps you could confirm if an indicated short across the BNC, is incorrect, and any suggestions of where to look first would be very helpful. Thanks! [Elecraft] Slow Web Site
G'day, I've been trying to download the construction manual for the EA3BLQ K2 digital interface. The site: http://www.qsl.net/ea3blq/download_ang.htm Is pathetically slow, 1000 bytes/sec and for a 2.4Mbyte download that is not an option. Anyone know another source? Re: [Elecraft] Re: KX1 Zero Beat
In a recent message, Leigh L. Klotz Jr [EMAIL PROTECTED] said Over the 4th of July vacation, I built a zero-beat detector for my KX1. At first I was using a data book design, but I found this one by KR5L on N0SS's site and just built his on perfboard. That device is excellent, Leigh. I have one built into my K2 and would not do without it. Likewise, it is sensitive to +/- 10Hz. There is a CMOS version of the zero-beat indicator around by LA3ZA using the LMC567 although I have not tried it. It is said to draw 0.9mA at 5V compared with 20mA at 8V for the LM567 version.
