[Emc-users] D510 EPP problem
Hello, gentlemen! I am having difficulties with getting Mesa 7i43 card working on D510 board. I have set parport to EPP in BIOS. I have checked it at least 4 times. But dmesg shows: [8.962720] parport0: PC-style at 0x378, irq 7 [PCSPP] I reinstalled Lucid this morning, but that did not bring any improvement. Does anyone have any idea, what else can I do? Does anyone have any idea, what else can I do? Update BIOS? Viesturs Viesturs: The D510 BIOS is broken and I don't think it will ever be fixed (see this list ca. October 2010). The user-entry portion of the BIOS lets you enter various parallel port modes but it doesn't carry through with setting the proper ACPI entries (or some such; I'm a bit woozy this morning). The port itself can run in the different modes but programs that read the ACPI tables to get port settings will be misinformed. The EMC wizards have introduced a workaround to this problem. In December 2010, Andy I said I can report that EMC2.4.6 release has fixed the parallel port issue on my D510MO + MESA 7i43 system. Regards, Kent PS - the ppdiag script that Kyle found is a nifty tool for documenting what the system knows about the parallel port but it can't identify this bug in the BIOS. -- EMC VNX: the world's simplest storage, starting under $10K The only unified storage solution that offers unified management Up to 160% more powerful than alternatives and 25% more efficient. I need some more details about Your script: The C file was based in this information: http://www.beyondlogic.org/spp/parallel.htm#6 (see bottom of page for Extended Control Register) http://www.beyondlogic.org/ecp/ecp.htm http://www.faqs.org/docs/Linux-mini/IO-Port-Programming.html 1) In which folder should I put it and then in terminal cd to? You just need to copy the C file to wherever you want it, /home/my_dir/emc2 maybe? Then compile it, I think the file header has a sample gcc command in the comments. You may need to install gcc or emc2-dev to get the needed support files, but it has been a while, so I don't recall. 2) How exactly should I run it? Address of parport is 0x378. How exactly should that command look? For the motherboard port, I thought the BIOS should have a setting that lets you set this port to EPP, but I guess this is broken? 3) Is the effect of setting the parport to EPP permanent or do I have to run this every time before using EMC? I don't recall. The BeyondLoic link above may mention if the register is sticky. If not, you could put a script in you start up files, such as in rc.d, unless of course the files are changed like the grub and xorg files always seem to. Re: [Emc-users] source for washers
On Thursday, August 25, 2011 02:34:37 PM Cathrine Hribar did opine: Hi: Was wondering if you, or anyone on here has a source for wavy spring washers? The ones used to load taper roller bearings. I called my local bearing house here and he don't know what I am talking about!!! Thanks: Bill Nomenclature maybe, Bill. I think they are usually called Belleview or similar. Or am I confused, ISTR those spring load not by being wavy, but by being dished? The dished version would probably be the stronger force, at reduced travel. What draws my attention is that lp0 is using parport0. Should it be like that or is this the cause of problem that parport is used by something else? Bingo! (I believe), lp0 is being held by lp. Unload (modprobe -r lp) it and see if that helps. If it does, I would grep thru the /etc/udev.d/rules.d drectory and comment out any lines that reference lp, so you don't have to do that after every bootup. Or one may be able to blacklist it in one of the /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist files, which should also get the job done. I have found that the correct cups setup will allow you to use the printers attached to other machines on your local network. If you can see these other printers with a browser looking at http://localhost:631, they should work. It might take adjustments in the /etc/cups directory on both the server and the client to do this. Peter C. OK, 2 of our products worked fine when tested for the first time with the D510MO, but an old version of one product did not communicate. The newer version of that board had a completely revamped bus interface vhdl module, and also worked. I did not analyze the problem in depth, but I think the problem related to timing of the WRITE/ signal to the strobe, it may have been going away too soon. I latched WRITE/ when recognizing the strobe and it fixed the problem. So, the D510MO has a subtle difference in timing of (I think) WRITE/ that never showed up on other motherboards. It is possible that differences in cables could make it work in some configurations and not others. Since the BIOS is incorrect, the data will be wrong. My guess is that the program that gives this is just looking in that memory area and not actually sensing anything from the port itself. So, this report is meaningless, what matters is whether the port is actually configured for EPP mode. What is read from the IO port 77A will tell the story. The high bit (bit 7) should be on for EPP mode. But, apparently Mesa's EMC2 driver will set this anyway, just as my (ppmc) driver does. Have you checked the cable to the motherboard's parport header? It can be installed backwards, for instance, or have a bad connection.
