[Emc-users] Rotary axis system

2014-03-27 Thread aaron moore
Hi
I am having trouble getting my router to run a fourth rotary axis nicely. It
does the job. but rapid and cut speeds both seem very inconsistant. I notice
that there is a configuration page for such a machine on the wiki site, but it
looks pretty complicated. What benefits does it have over simply configuring
with the stepper wizard, and if it does improve performance, I would be
grateful if someone could talk a complete ejit through setting it up.
Here she is speeded up x a zillion http://www.cnccraft.co.uk/3-dimensional-work/
Thanks

and A rapid move will run at a speed such that all axes arrive at the end-point
at the same time. What you might be seeing is the linear axes being slowed down
because the rotary axis can't keep up. So, an X-rapid with an A-move will
happen at very different speeds depending on how far the A-axis is moving. I

the link to the wiki page

number of jobs I have done recently all axix will go significantly faster and
at certain points during the job they seemin
gly double their feed speed then slow down again. A rapid x move is very slow.
I do have very slow old computer.will this affect speed? None of this makes
any sense to me. Cheers Aaron -- atp If you can't fix it, you don't own it.

On Sunday 10 November 2013 09:38:22 andy pugh did opine: As I appear to have
been ignored... The problem probably is linked to the limited lookahead,
but if you only notice it when the rotary is involved, then it may be that
the rotary acceleration is much too low. It is acceleration that limits how
fast a particular segment is allowed to run, and the lowest-accel axis will
dominate. Angular axis acceleration numbers are relatively enormous as a
consequence of the units. Tens of thousands of degrees/s/s I didn't go that
extreme, but I am likely too low too, I was considering that the table has no
inertia since its geared down 90 times, and was more concerned with the added
mass of the all steel couplings I had made, which probably weigh about the same
as the 425 motor's armature, and are about the same diameter. Some day I should
make a new motor mount, sized 2 shorter, and using one of the alu flex
couplings which would be ounces lighter. I bought a pag of them
on fleabay when I started on the lathe. But I would also insert ball thrust
washers for worm end play which I do not now have. That made a large difference
in how much movement power actually got to the XY tables. Using those, hidden
in the bearing hubs on the xy tables, with factorylike 20 tpi 10mm acme screws,
a stalled spindle will break off a 1/4 solid carbide end mill, ditto if it
plugs up cutting dead soft alu. I need more spindle revs and horsepower, about
10x more, badly. 200 watt motor, 2500 revs wide open, sucks. Its a toy. Cheers,

[Emc-users] (no subject)

2013-11-09 Thread aaron moore
Hi
I am trying to get my head around running a rotary axis on top of a 3 axis
router, but I am having problems;

The main one is low feed speed. I have tried editing the code and increasing
feed and acceleration in the ini file to increase the speed, but in makes no
difference. I am trying to cut a helical final cut, which seems to have lots of
tiny moves, but other files I have tried are almost as slow. Can any one offer
some advice? The computer I run Lcnc on is very old an slow, does that have any
bearing?
Thanx in advance

Aaron When you cut stuff with a lot of little cuts, especially curved cuts, the
speed will always be slow. If you look at the constant velocity parameters of
any CNC machine you will find that the machine has to accelerate and then
decelerate again at the beginning and end of every cut or move. Unless you have
a very light gantry with a huge acceleration, you will have a slow response.
When the cuts are very short the machine does not have enough time to get to
the requested feed rate before it has to slow down again. It is one of the
pains of cutting 3D stuff. On 2013/11/09 12:58 PM, aaron moore wrote: Hi I

Do I simply connect blue to ground and brown to the designated pin (10)?
Or
Do I have to do something to the third yellow wire?

Aaron Those switches need to be powered. Normally 24v will be good. So check
the specs of that device and it will show one wire to 24V, one to ground and
the other to the pin ( I cant remember the colors). These switches can be
either NPN or PNP output but that should not worry you to much if you go to a
pin. On 2013/08/24 09:02 AM, aaron moore wrote: Hi All Please could someone

http://sensortech.wordpress.com/2011/01/18/industrial-sensing-fundamentals-–-back-to-the-basics-npn-vs-pnp/
When I wired mine it was relatively easy, as I have a 7i64 with isolated
inputs, but even then I initially had the sensors on the wrong side of the
input. The result of this was the internal LED glowing dimly when off and
brightly when on (though it did actually work). You need to think of them in
terms of current flow, not voltage, as they are often used to operate relays
rather than logic. The power supply wires are easy enough to figure out, those
need a supply of the rated voltage. Then, depending on the type of the sensor,
the output wire will either source current (from the positive supply) or sink
current (to the 0V wire) when activated. If you have an NPN sensor then it is
likely that you can connect the output wire directly to your BoB. The BoB input
will (probably) be weakly pulled up to 5V, and when the prox activates then it
will be pulled down to 0V. If you have PNP sensors, or if the inputs on the BoB
are opto-couplers, then it gets a little more complicated. So, what type of
prox sensor do you have, and what is the nature of the BoB inputs (and, also,
are the inputs two-terminal floating inputs, or commoned on the +5 or commoned
on the 0V side? -- atp If you can't fix it, you don't own it.

[Emc-users] Pacer CNC router

2013-04-21 Thread aaron moore
Hello list
I work part time at Falmouth University where they have a £70,000 Pacer CNC
router that has gone wrong for the 2nd time in a year. Apparently the drivers
have a design fault and are now obselete. Pacer are happy to fix them for £1000
a time but will not upgrade the machine. Does any one know if LinuxCNC can be
used on such a large servo set up and if so how do we go about aquiring the
necessary drivers and control gear assuming the sevos themselves are useable?
Big ask I know, but I only have stepper expeience and am way out of my depth
here.
Thanx to all who will advise

[Emc-users] Need for speed

2009-03-16 Thread aaron moore
Hi

I have recently built a 1500mm x 1500mm gantry style router. I am using EMC to
run three FL86STH156-4208 11.96 Nm stepper motors, with 16mm x 4mm pitch
trapezoidal screws. The gantry weighs some thing like 70kg. It works pretty
well except the fastest movement I can achieve for x and y is around 15 mm per
second before the steppers start complaining. I know the spigots on the end of
the screws were not turned very concentrically, (I used a crappy lath)...could
this be the reason for the lack of speed?

Thanks for any response

Does it make grinding noises BEFORE the steppers lose sync? Let's see,
4 mm pitch and 15 mm/second, assuming direct drive of the screws. That
would be 15/4 = 3.75 revs/sec or 225 RPM. Ahhh, that is right in the
range of midband resonance. What motor drives are you using?
If any flavor of full step drive, that is almost certainly your
problem. You might want to try a good microstepping drive.

Otherwise, you may need a hardware step generator, or possibly a faster
computer to make smoother trains of pulses.

 Hi all,

A while back I promised to investigate how a European EMC-fest/meeting
could
be arranged. I have some ideas and suggestions, but it would be great to
have as many influences as possible and that means from all of you!
Please
throw in your ideas or suggestions!

 Possible location?
Is there a machine to CNC-ify or retrofit?
 Topics for classes?
Possible teachers or do you have something to present?
 Experiences from other EMC-gatherings?

 It's brainstorm time!

[Emc-users] Thanks and help with post processor

2008-07-05 Thread aaron Moore
Hi All

This is a thank you to everyone out there who has helped over the last few
months to get my little stepper powered router going. I
am finally getting some useful stuff done now, and I can do pretty much
everything within LinuxBrilliant.

I have however acquired some rather good windows software, but its long list of
post processors does not include EMC (shame). Is
there a generic/popular alternative that will work?

Thanks again

Aaron

Re: [Emc-users] Installing a second parallel port

Alan
Thanks for reply.
I am using steppers, so do I add my read and writes to the servo thread or the
base
thread?

My .hal file still has all the original configuration lines in, which I know
work... will
it run once I make these changes or is there still more to do?

 Aaron,

Since you indicated that you are adding a second port you need both
   ports in your config statement:

 loadrt hal_parport cfg=0x0378 0x9000

Here is how I set up my reads and writes: (not using steppers
requires adding them to the base-thread not the servo-thread).

 # next connect the parport functions to threads
 # read inputs first
 addf parport.0.read base-thread 1
 addf parport.1.read base-thread 2
 # hook functions to base thread (high speed thread for step generation)
 addf stepgen.make-pulses base-thread
 # write outputs last
 addf parport.0.write base-thread -1
 addf parport.1.write base-thread -1
 # The following two lines are needed if you are running Double step
 addf parport.0.reset base-thread
 addf parport.1.reset base-thread

 Aaron,

I bought my 2 parallel port pci card from Newegg. It is uses a
 netmos nm9815cv chip.

After physically plugging it into the computer, I ran lspci -v
from a terminal window to locate the port addresses. Thus far it
 was just plug and play.
The next step is to edit the .hal file. You need add the port
address to the hal_parport config statement and to add read and
write functions to the appropriate thread (since I am running
steppers it was the base-thread). Then you need to add the pin and
signal connections to do what ever provoked the need for a second
 port.

When you start EMC, which configuration do you chose? The .hal file for
that configuration is most likely in your home directory
 under .../emc2/configs. So, something like:

 /home/aarons_home/emc2/configs/stepper/stepper.hal

The EMC start screen lists the available configurations based on the
names of .ini files. The .ini file you choose has a place to set
which .hal files get loaded. You should open the .ini file and check for
the HALFILE= lines to see the files names. The lines that start with #
(comment tag) are commented out, so they don't count. Usually there is
only one .hal file loaded and its name matches the configuration name.
To load the parport driver you need to have a line in your .hal file
 like:

 loadrt hal_parport cfg=0x9000
(loads only your PCI parport as parport.0)

 or

 loadrt hal_parport cfg=0x0378 0x9000
(loads the motherboard port as parport.0, and the PCI port as parport.1)

This should load the driver and make the functions parport.X.read and
parport.X.write available to EMC. You need to have EMC run these
functions in your servo thread by adding to your .hal file:

 addf parport.0.read servo-thread
addf parport.1.read servo-thread (if you have a second port)
(usually at the beginning of the addf lines)

 addf parport.0.write servo-thread
addf parport.1.write servo-thread (if you have a second port)
(usually at the end of the addf lines)

After EMC starts these functions, you will have the HAL parport pins,
signals and parameters available. These are listed here:

 http://www.linuxcnc.org/docview/html//hal_drivers.html#sec:Parport

Most likely in your case if you loaded only one parport it will be
parport.0 so to connect the flood coolant button to pin one, you would
 add a line:

 net Flood iocontrol.0.coolant-flood = parport.0.pin-01-out

 Other iocontrol signals are here:

 http://www.linuxcnc.org/docview/html//man/man1/iocontrol.1.html

If you start EMC and toggle the Flood button you can check pin one with
a voltmeter to see if the voltage toggles with the button. If it
doesn't, you can try address 0x9400. Good luck.

Re: [Emc-users] ini.fiiles

2008-05-28 Thread aaron Moore
I know I,m missing something very simple here but:

If I set max speed to equal feed speed the motors freeze on rapid moves.
With max speed about 15 they just about start turning. If I set max speed
to 20mm/s the motors do rapids move but do not go to the right position.

There is also a reluctance for all motors to move in positive direction at
lower max speeds

All this also seems to happen in Mach3

Unless anyone can figire this out I am going to rewire the drivers and
power supply with shielded cable and fix them to an aluminium base.

  Hi Aaron

As I see it the problem is that your config runs the rapids much to
fast
for the ability of your hardware.

  MAX_VELOCITY = 10.0

Means 10mm per second or 600 mm per minute. If you lower that to

  MAX_VELOCITY = 4.0

your rapids will run about 240 mm a minute. Since that is not much
faster than your feedrate you should be okay. But I would not be
afraid
to play with the numbers until you discover a combination that moves
the
machine about 80% of the speed at which you begin loosing steps.

Alex, as usual, identified a key question.
Just to expand a little, it is important because rapids (G0) use
  the
maximum velocity; but cutting (G1, G2, G3) use the last specified
  Fword
as the velocity. Generally, that will be much slower than the
  maximum.
So, to repeat Alex's question, what feed rate are you using?

 Aaron,

If you are using feed override at any percentage, it can sometimes
affect your rapids, it. the rapid speed is also overridden, exceeding
 the machine's capabilities.

Run some handwritten g code tests.

g0 x10 f1
g0 x0 f1
g0 x10 f2
g0 x0 f2

I use inches, so adjust your values.

And so on, until you get a failure. Try each axis and then pairs.

I noticed your power supplies are wired in parallel. Does it
explicitly state in the docs that you can do that?

A useful test would be to split the supply and wire one to the X and
 one to the Y.

I have had lots of weirdo problems from power supplies not giving
enough juice. Everything works fine until you do a multi axis move and
the power supply can't deliver the watts.

Did you isolate the logic signals from the power wiring?

Dan

[Emc-users] Micro stepper driver MSD542 / KL-5042 cont

2008-05-24 Thread aaron Moore
Hi agian
If anyone can bear to listen to my woes
I am still having problems configuring my stepper machine. As someone
suggested, the problem seems to be with the rapid moves. I
have got one good result with Velocity @ 20mm acceleration @ 10 with micro
stepping set @ 16 with the motors wired in parallel,
but I have not been able to repeat this success. Acceleration set above 20 and
the motors sound terrible and miss stepps. Below
20 the rapid moves do not go to the right place.

Can anyone explain why the machine moves correctly on cutting moves and rapid
moves go wonky?
Thanks
Aaron

[Emc-users] Micro stepper driver MSD542 / KL-5042 cont.

2008-05-21 Thread aaron Moore
I think I would like to clear a few miss understandings here. I am not an
engineer and will never be one. I am a furniture maker/designer with a keen
interest in
digital technologies and linux. I have built a 1.5m x 1.5m gantry style router
table with high spec rails, carriages and bearings. It has been two years in
the
planning and taken 2-3 months to build in my spare time. I bought a CNC Kit
from an online company in UK (who have not been able to sort my problem out)
consisting
of 3 x MSD542 micro controllers, 3 X FL86STH High torque Nema 34 Stepper motors
and 2 X L6-PF11-001 (PS407) power supply units. The motors are connected in
parallel with micro stepping set to 16 and the power at 4.2 amps. It has cost
me well over £1000 and I would like to get it to work with a reasonable amount
of
accuracy.

I have tried using many settings of speed and acceleration but I always get a
the same result. When engraving a line text the individual letters look okay
but they
are always misplaced along the y axis by between 5mm and 30mm, and always in
the same direction. My question today is could this be because I have not used
shielded
cable to wire the powersupply and drivers together. If this could be the
problem what kind of cable should I use. Or is there something else I should
look into

If any one can offer some advise I would be very grateful

Cheers
Aaron

One stepper per axis
Gantry runs on X axis rails and weighs about 90kg - 100kg
Y axis weighs about 20 -30 kg
And the spindle and mount 10-20kg

All axis run directly from trapezoidal screws 16mm dia, 4mm pitch with brass
nuts.
At present it is set for 16 microsteps.
Not sure if this answers the last question

The motors are actually FL86STH156-4208
Voltage: 5.25V
Current (phase): 4.2A
Resistance (Phase): 1.25Ohm
Inductance (Phase): 8mH
Holding Torque: 11.96Nm
Length: 156mm

 Aaron,

Other responders have indicated they needed more infomation.
If you can fill in the blanks and confirm or correct assumptions

concrete help. It won't be me as I'm a servo person. Sorry.

OK, lets gather some more information here:

Stated or implied. 1.5m x 1.5 m gantry. One stepper motor per axis.
I assume the gantry is the X axis and the Y which lags is mounted on the X.
How much weight are you driving per axis?
How do you drive the axes; eg. gears, timing belts, etc and what
 are the ratios?
Another way to put this is one step moves you how far?
 Step rate under normal conditions.

I am almost certain the miss alignment is not due to the gantry skewing,
mainly because it is in a different axis.
If it helps the feet of the gantry are 450mm long with fancy carriages at
each end.

It appears from previous posts, that the gantry is about 1.5 meters long
and rides on rails. What is the support/bearing mechanism for the gantry
to ride on the rails? In particular, if there are two or more supports
for each side of the gantry, how far apart are the furthest supports on
 each side?

One of the problems with a gantry style machine is that unless you are
careful, the gantry will skew with respect to the other axis. Skewing
can cause uneven motion and/or distorted motion. There are a variety of
 ways to prevent that.

For example, if the bearing supports for the gantry are as far apart as
the width of the gantry, the forces causing the gantry to skew are
 resisted.

Another technique is to use a motor on each side of the gantry so that
the two sides are driven in tandem.

A third technique is to use a rack and pinion drive with a rack and
pinion on each side and a shaft connecting the two pinions. Then a
single motor can drive both sides at once.

There are engineering solutions to these engineering problems. A good
reference is some of Slocum's books/papers. You can google for them -- I
 don't have a handy reference.

They came out fine. I see your using a center pull on the Y, novel
 idea. Keep in your
mind that the Y motor sees a substantial load compared to the X as
 it it carrying the
 weight and drag of both.

Do you know the timing settings you used in Mach?

Re: [Emc-users] Micro stepper driver MSD542 / KL-5042

2008-05-19 Thread aaron Moore
The timings in the chart seem a bit better but still not good enough.

Yes I can jog and the motors sound reasonable,

When I try to engrave a line of text the individual letters look good, but they
get progressively, and randomly, miss-aligned on the
y axis. Also the total length of the text seems a little small.

When I try to engrave a series of 3 squares and a circle, the squares get
rounded corners and the circle is miss-placed in the
pattern.

Does this help to diagnose the problem?
Is it a question of tweaking the timings?
When a motor looses steps does it do so in the same place every time you run a
program?

Any and all help gratefully received
Aaron

There is a step timing chart here:

note that the MSD542 timing is not confirmed but should get you started.

Does it move at all when you try and jog? Tell us a bit more about

I just tried reducing the acceleration velocity is now 5 and acceleration 1

slightly worse.

Is this really such a hit and miss procedure? I just spent a fair amount of
money and I figured there would be a set

Out of curiosity, what do you mean by only works occasionally? Do you
mean that stepconf fails to run, or that the resulting config doesn't
 work correctly?

You mentioned rounding of corners - that tells me that you have a high
acceleration setting. The accel values in EMC (and stepconf) are in
units/second or units/second^2, so it's possible that your settings are
too high if you thought those were units/minute. For example, if your
 machine can go 60 IPM, that's a setting of 1.0 inches/sec, and 1.0 is
what you should enter into stepconf or in the ini. Similarly, if it can
accelerate to 60 IPM in 0.5 seconds, then that means 120 IPM/second (60
IPM in 1/2 second), so you'd enter 2.0 for the accel setting.

Setting the accel or vel limits too high could certainly explain the
 things you've been seeing.

 Hope this helps

How do you set the tolerance of G64
It won't solve the problem of my text falling down though, will it?

For the different trajectory modes see:
 http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/emcinfo.pl?TrajectoryControl

If using only G64, many people report that the trajectory 'cuts-corners'
either too much (you get rounded off corners) or too little (contouring
 programs run very slow).

Therefore I'd suggest a tolerance is always used with G64, for example
G64P0.01 for a tolerance of 0.01 mm (if you program in mm)

I do not know the answers to these questions. I come at this as a
woodworker with no cnc experience to speak of. I was hoping to
use the stepconfig wizard, but this only works occasionally

Are you using G64 ? If so, what tolerance are you using: G64PX.XX

  worse.

Is this really such a hit and miss procedure? I just spent a
fair amount of money and I figured there would be a set formula
  for given equipment,

  But thanks for your efforts

You've never specified your units, so I'm going to assume inches.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.

You say velocity is now 5 and acceleration is 1.

What kind of a machine do you have? I got the impression that this was
a small stepper based machine - a Sherline or something of that class.
If so, I find it rather astonishing that you can get 300 inches per
 minute from it.

Velocity is in inches per second (this is in the documentation). Five
inches per second times 60 seconds in a minute is 300 inches per minute.
Do you really expect your machine to be that fast?

Acceleration is in inches per second per second. You have 1 - that
means it will take your machine five seconds to reach its full speed of
5 inches per second, and five more seconds to slow down and stop.
During the 5 second accel, it would travel 12.5 inches, and another 12.5
during decel. I can't think of any machine that would have this
particular combination of values. It would have to have long axes, huge
inertia, very low friction, and very weak motors.

Stepconf may be a wizard, but it cannot do magic. The numbers you
give it must make sense for your machine. And if you really do have a
very strange machine, it may be out of the range of things stepconf was
intended to handle, and need special treatment.

Don't get me wrong - EMC is quite capable of controlling a machine with
those strange characteristics. But you aren't going to get typical
machine tool performance out of it. Somehow I don't think that is what
you really have - instead, you gave stepconf incorrect values for
velocity and/or acceleration, and stepconf and EMC are doing the best
they can with the data you gave them.

You need to make sure you understand what the numbers meanm, and apply
some sanity checks to them. You also need to make sure that when you
run stepconf's test, the machine actually does roughly what the numbers
say it should be doing. If you gave stepconf 5 and 1 for velocity and
accel, then the test should have taken 5 seconds to accel, 5 seconds to
decel, and traveled 25 inches. A ruler and a watch are adequate to
 measure those results.

If the test doesn't match the numbers, it is time to stop and figure out
 why.

 Regards,

 John Kasunich

[Emc-users] Configuring motors and drives

2008-05-10 Thread aaron Moore
Hi
Still having trouble Configuring motors and drives. Am getting axis to run on
cut passes but things get out alignment on the rapid moves. Can anyone offer
any
suggestions.
Also, does the stepper config wizard only test the axis the first time you set
up a configuration?
Thanks

 try sudo apt-get install linux-source-2.6.15-magma
that should install the linux source, maybe vbox works then.
If you only need the headers then apt-get install linux-headers-2.6.15-magma
(it's most likely the full source is not needed, so I would try this first).

[Emc-users] Problem configuring stepper machine

2008-05-01 Thread aaron Moore
Hi

I am having problems configuring a home made stepper machine. I am using the
stepper config wizard, but cannot find values for:
Step time
Step space
Direction hold
Direction setup
I cannot find any reference to these parameters in the MSD542 Microstepping
Driver data sheet. It does allow me to change values
for microstep from 2 to 125, but I do not see this is relevant to stem space,
or step time. (A micro step of 16 seems to work, from
trial and error)

I can run the 'EMC2 AXIS' program that displays when emc is first started, but
some of the letters get miss aligned...is this
because the machine is missing stepps, how can I solve this?

Also,I am unable to test any axis in the stepper config wizard. Why would this
be?

Any help would be very gratefuly received

Without substantial work (a port of the RTAI realtime kernel to the G3's
processor), you will not be able to run realtime software such as emc.
Even if you did this, it doesn't look like you can use any emc-supported
I/O hardware (such as parallel-port or PCI cards) in that machine, so
you still have no way to communicate with your mill.
