The ... ] Here it is, the all-new 2018 Nissan Leaf. The second-generation Leaf is being billed as “the world’s most advanced mass-market electric vehicle” and an icon of the company’s Intelligent Mobility vision. In case you didn’t know, Teslas aren’t mass market and the Leaf was a pioneer and major gamble on Nissan’s part back in 2010 when electric cars weren’t in vogue. The new Leaf combines a greater range with a dynamic new design and fresh technologies. At the heart of it is the Leaf’s e-powertrain that offers improved energy efficiency and increased power and torque output, which now stand at 110 kW (148 hp) and 320 Nm. That’s an improvement of 38% and 26%, respectively. Powering the EM57 e-motor is a 40 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. In 2016, the original Leaf received a battery upgrade from 24 to 30 kWh, so this is a big step forward while maintaining battery pack dimensions. Compared to the original 2010 Leaf, the battery here has 67% better energy density. The enhanced electrode materials with revised chemistry, besides contributing to power density, also improves durability upon charge and discharge. However, the Chevrolet Bolt has a 60 kWh battery, while the Tesla Model 3 is said to have a battery with energy capacity of up to 80 kWh. The Leaf’s 40 kWh battery is good for a driving range of 400 km in Japan’s cycle and 378 km in the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) on a single charge. In the US, the EV’s projected EPA range is 241 km (150 miles). Nissan says that it will introduce a “high-power version” of the Leaf with increased motor power and battery capacity at the end of 2018. This version will provide a longer range, at a higher price, of course. As for charging time, Nissan quotes eight hours pulling from a 6 kW source, and double that time from a 3 kW source. There’s also quick charging up to 80% that takes 40 minutes via the CHAdeMO charging socket. The max AC charge rate is 6.6 kW, or 50 kW with DC quick charge. In countries where vehicle-to-home systems exist, the battery makes it possible to store surplus solar power during the day and then use it to help power the home in the evening. One can also recharge the battery in the middle of the night, when prices are lowest in some markets, and then use the electricity during the day to reduce energy costs. In places with vehicle-to-grid systems, Leaf owners can get incentives from energy companies to improve power grid stability by absorbing demand fluctuation. To match the improved output, Nissan enhanced the car’s chassis for better stability. Heavy components including the battery are placed in the centre of the body, helping achieve smaller yaw moments of inertia compared with vehicles with an engine in front. Nissan says that the new Leaf’s EPS has a more linear feel and improved feedback from the road surface. Also, the urethane bump stop for the rear suspension has been replaced by a rubber one for a smoother ride. The Intelligent Ride Control software manages torque generation when cornering, to reduce vibration and improve ride quality. EVs are quiet things, but the lack of an engine makes wind noise obvious. Nissan says that aerodynamic upgrades (reduced drag and zero lift, Cd 0.28) and exterior refinements have led to a reduction in wind noise in the new Leaf. Other noise-reduction measures include optimisation of the redesigned inverter’s structural rigidity, and a noise-isolating cover on top of the power delivery module. The noise from the e-motor itself has also been reduced. Nissan is very proud of its “Intelligent Driving” technology in the new Leaf, headlined by ProPILOT, ProPILOT Park and the e-Pedal. ProPILOT is a single-lane autonomous driving tech. Once activated, the Leaf can automatically control the distance to the vehicle in front using a speed preset by the driver (between 30 km/h and 100 km/h), while steering and keeping itself centered in its lane. It does braking to a complete stop too, remaining there till without the driver’s foot on the brakes.

The all-new Opel Ampera-e could be considered one of the biggest disappointments from Euro NCAP’s latest batch of tested vehicles. Six cars were awarder five stars, but the German brother of the Chevrolet Bolt got only four. The all-electric vehicle performed relatively well in most of the categories, but the organization points out it has no seatbelt reminder for the rear seats. While this might sound like a minor issue, General Secretary of Euro NCAP Michiel van Ratingen says “we know how effective these reminders are at promoting seatbelt use, so this is clearly a big step backwards on Opel’s part.” It’s a trend the German manufacturer set with the new Insignia which offered rear seatbelt reminders only as an option. On the positive side, the Ampera-e is praised for its autonomous emergency braking system, which performed well in tests of its highway-speed functionality, with collisions avoided or mitigated in all test scenarios. The Ford Fiesta, Jeep Compass, Mazda CX-5, Mercedes-Benz C-Class Cabriolet, Opel Grandland X, and Renault Koleos all received five stars. The Fiesta becomes only the second supermini to join the five-star club this year, following the excellent results from the new SEAT Ibiza. Kia’s Picanto and Rio received three stars with the standard equipment, but were rated as four and five stars respectively when tested with the optional safety packs. Euro NCAP was not particularly happy by the apparent lack of restraint robustness in side impact testing by some of the models. In the Jeep Compass, for example, dummy readings indicated injury risk values above the limit to qualify for points in the pole test, while in the Mercedes C-Class Cabriolet, during the side barrier test, the side airbag did not fully cover the impact area. “Euro NCAP is pushing for the fitment of advanced technologies and manufacturers have responded well, with AEB now commonplace on most new cars,” Ratingen added. “However, they should not forget the basics of occupant protection in case of a crash.” [© motor1.com] https://www.autoevolution.com/news/2017-opel-ampera-e-fails-to-score-top-safety-rating-in-euro-ncap-crash-test-120249.html 2017 Opel Ampera-e Fails To Score Top Safety Rating In Euro NCAP Crash Test 7 Sep 2017 ... the Opel (and Vauxhall) Ampera-e is nothing more than a 2017 Chevrolet Bolt with different badges ... Re: [EVDL] I wonder where the Clunns are
Hi Willy and All, I'm 4 miles east of Tampa Bay, close or at ground zero as the track presently is and where the max winds will be, the dangerous quadrant . I'm at 52' and immune to flooding, can't get deeper than 2" and only until the downpour keeps up a 4"/hr rate for a while as either soak into the sand or run slightly downhill. and as an old Florida boy, I know better. But likely over 100mph winds so I already signed into a cat 5 shelter and have other options too. My place, 63 Vette body, chassis, workshops, etc can't though. I'm boarded up, packed but will wait until things get over 45mph steady then hit the shelter for about 10 hrs, and get back once wind go down to 50mph. The Clunns are in low lying like most all of that area in a mandatory evacuation zone I believe the whole county is under. I have an old friend living a couple miles from them on higher land and he is leaving east. And close to the coast and good possibility can get hit by 100mph+ winds and the surge if the present course verifies after the storm passes. Most it'll depend on the forward speed as it takes time for the winds to build up the surge but presently say 12-15' in their area. And the massive rains that might happen can bring the flood from inland. All up if it stays at 120mph + just offshore putting the most dangerous winds right on the coastal areas most densely populated and the most time to make the surge, damage will be extensive losing maybe 25% of homes, buildings and literally changing the coastline . Taking out whole islands, losing 200-500' of coast/beaches with our most expensive properties is likely if it goes as they say. The first feeder bands are coming through Tampa now but they are mostly just good rain storms. It just hit the Keys with 130mph winds so likely will be little left for 40 miles likely taking out the only road, US1 for weeks, months even. Let's hope it speeds up and veers west but the just make it bad for others on the upper gulf coast. We'll survive but is going to take a lot to put it back together. I'll do fine as I can rebuild fairly fast, low cost if needed, even better. My big worry and interestingly protects us is I live in an old oak forest that protects us from winds until they fall down, which is the major reason I'm not staying home in the worse part in case they do. All our trees take out the powerlines like in Charlie a weaker storm that hot me with 75mph winds and took out put with 3 hot miserable days of listening to generators. Likely it'll be days, even a week longer. Last time I just used my lightweight EV's to supply my power and almost ran out just when the power came back on. I had a set up wit 7-11 to recharge my EVs I normally used for extending my 40 mile range but didn't need it. Now I have solar, batteries so no problem for me. Going to be an interesting 24 hours. Re: [EVDL] I wonder where the Clunns are
I've seen 300-350 battery amps routinely from good 6v golf car batteries. There's a reason that 1980s converters used 400a controllers in their 96- 120v golf car battery conversions. If your batteries have been on a "maintainer" for 2 years, there's a good chance that they now have significant positive grid corrosion from overcharging. That will cause increased internal resistance and thus lower peak power. Unless you're using them in a standby power system, and maybe not even then, batteries in storage are better off being cycled periodically (say every 1-3 months), not left on float chargers to rot. The higher their specific energy (meaning higher SG electrolyte), the more they suffer from grid corrosion. PS - I wouldn't call most cars or pickups with 16 golf car batteries "lead sleds." To deserve that label, the EV should have something near or over 50% of its weight in batteries. One infamous lead sled example was Robert Aronson's Mars IIs. They were tiny, flyweight Renault R10s converted with 20 (!) batteries. Some of their body seams literally opened up from the battery weight after 8-10 years. Bob Rice (RIP), who I'm pretty sure helped build the Mars II cars, described them as "elepants on roller skates." [EVDL] Two EV's to Donate
We are a four EV family now and that is two too many. We want to donate our two EV conversions (we also have a 2013 Rav4-EV and a 2002 Rav4-EV that are our main vehicles) to a non-profit organization (we would like the tax deduction). We would prefer to donate to a school or school(s) that have an automotive program. Second choice would be to a non-profit that will fix them up and use them. We don’t want them going to an auction house where they would be sold for scrap or cannibalized for parts. We have already done that with our old Windstar minivan (our last ICE car). We had arranged to donate them to a school and did a lot of paperwork for the school to accept the donation, but the school never completed the process and came to pick them up. Until about a year ago, we kept them charged and drove them a mile or two periodically and maintained while we waited for the school. After sitting for a year they undoubtedly will need some TLC. They both ran and we had fixed everything that we knew was wrong (except a slow leak in one tire). The odometer has been fixed in the Saturn. I don't know what the current range is. Re: [EVDL] Two EV's to Donate
Every dog has it's day. I think you would be better off to sell. At least then the parts will be used in a working project. If you donate I would be surprised if anyone would honor your do not scrap or cannibalize rule. These cars are near worthless. Sorry to say. I've spent thousands running cars like these. I was lucky to get 3k for my Aspire. I now have Leafs. Be happy if someone just wants them for parts. They are old technology which has no place in the brush less motor world of today. Not to mention lithium batteries. Sincerely, Lawrence Rhodes -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Yes, but they have an upside: You can actually work on them yourself, without having to fight some automaker's proprietary security stuff. If the motor or controller craps out, you can replace it (or them) with whatever new unit(s) you want. Same with the DC:DC, brake vacuum pump, and so on. Same with the battery. You can upgrade or downgrade any component at will. You can get parts from any source, not just the dealer. You won't have the car rejecting some junkyard or generic part you put in because it isn't "registered" with the body computer, or whatever. There seems to be a large and growing "hacking" (in a good way) community devoted to some production EVs, but even those are still much more locked down and opaque than any conversion.
