To Jodie: Re: vaccine schedule and mixing negatives and positives
Hi Jodie, Welcome to the FeLV group! You've found the best source for reliable info. and great support in dealing with FeLV. I unknowingly mixed my positive with three negatives for 2.5 years before I found out my positive was positive. He lived another two years before passing. None of my negatives contracted FeLV from Cricket. All were vaccinated and all are still living 1.5 years after his death. There was no fighting or grooming between Cricket and the others, but they did share food and water bowls, and litter boxes. I don't have any FeLV+ kitties now, but will remain with this group indefinitely because of the compassion and encouragement they showed me when I was dealing with his illness. It's an invaluable that I love paying forward. How old is Jack now? He may throw off the virus-he has a 40% chance. He may also have had a false positive test, and not be positive after all. We do see that. My advice, in complete agreement with your holistic vet, is to vaccinate your others, and re-test Jack with an IFA test (as opposed to the in-house Elisa) in 3-6 months. When you vaccinate your others, make sure they do it in a rear leg, as vaccination-site sarcomas are always a risk, and the neck is a much more difficult place to treat a sarcoma than the leg. Understand that the vaccination success rate is listed as about 75% (someone correct me here if I'm wrong), but if Jack doesn't do any biting, in my opinion, it wouldn't matter if your others were vaccinated or not. The chances of contracting it without a bite (or via birth) is very low, from what I've learned and seen here. The info. you've read out on the web, in our opinion, is more of a cover-your-_ss, overly cautious type of info. from veterinary universities and veterinarians and others quoting those sources. They are the same sources that say to pts when a cat tests positive, which none of us agree with. Please keep us posted on Jack, and if you have any questions at all, please ask. We're here to help. With all your furbabies, it looks like you've probably got lots of info. yourself on various kitty topics that you can share should the need arise. :) Have a great day Jodie! :) Wendy Dallas, Tx --- Jodie Marsten [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi! I rescued Jack about 3 months ago and he is FeLV+ ) I took him from an abusive home with the intention of finding him a wonderful home). I have 6 other cats, Mr.Furley (5yrs), Lucky (1 1/2 yrs), Ralphie, Janet, and Cleo (each 1 yr), and Furby (10 months). Everyone else has been tested for FeLV and is negative. I am unable to continue keeping Jack separated from the others and I have not been able to find him an appropriate home. I went to the holistic veterinarian who recommended vaccinating all - cats against FeLV and allowing them to mix. She said that FeLV is most often transmitted through bites etc. I have read so much info about FeLV being transmitted through saliva (all of my cats are VERY friendly and all groom eachother) and that 2 shots are given then an annual booster is recommended. I guess my questions are as follows: What are your experiences with mixing negatives and positives? Have any of your vaccinated cats contracted the disease? How long after vaccinating do I need to wait before introducing them? (Vet said 48 hours). Any info would be GREATLY appreciated! Thank you very much - Be smarter than spam. To Terrie: RE: OT: Pregnant Feral Kitty....Questions
Terrie, Bless you for taking this little one in and giving her the care she deserves. She's a lucky girl to have found you. To spay/abort or not is a personal choice. You just have to do what you think is right for new kitty. I think either way, whatever kitties remain will be loved and cared for now that you're in their lives. I don't have much advice on whether to vaccinate now or later; whatever the vet thinks, although if she's about to give birth, I personally would wait for fear of hurting the babies or mom having a reaction to the vaccine while pregnant. Especially since sometimes what seems like a feral might just be an already-vaccinated, very scared, and lost kitty. OT: Roombie-the new Roomba - for those of you considering purchasing one
Hey guys, Just wanted to let you guys know that Roombie (our new Roomba Sage for pet owners) went on it's maiden voyage this morning. The kitties were somewhat alarmed at first, but by the time it cleaned for 45 minutes and docked itself, they weren't too concerned with it. Smookie ran over to it when it stopped and has been trying to get the brushes out from underneath it. It's too cute. So far, Roombie did a bang-up job of vacuuming my tile floors-the living room, kitchen, and eating area along with the front entry way and hallway leading from that. That's as far as it could go since all the doors were shut along the hallway. I was very surprised with how well it patterned itself while cleaning. It got in and out of tight spaces. It even tried to eat Smookie's feather toy, but I rescued it. We paid $219 for it at the irobot website, which is the company that makes Roomba. A better deal than at Linens and Things or Bed, Bath, and Beyond. They have a pretty decent special, which includes free shipping, and a free home dock (normally $60); fairly cheap for a Roomba. Normally, I am a very frugal person, but I have bought three vacuum-cleaners in the past few years at about $50 each at Walmart, and all have died. Plus, I don't actually have to do the vacuuming myself, so that itself was worth the extra money. With the tile, as opposed to the carpet we had that hid a lot of dirt, every speck of dirt shows up, and I'm having to sweep every day as it is. So all in all, I'm happy as of day one. We'll see after a month or so if Roombie was worth it. :) Wendy Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world: Indeed it is the only thing that ever has! ~~~ Margaret Meade ~~~ __ Do You Yahoo!? Re: Stitch - Questions!
Hi Joe, I have seen several times on two different kitty 'sites' that some cats don't like Merrick, so don't be surprised if Stitch won't eat it. I hope he does, because it's supposed to be good stuff, but if not, there's other good stuff out there. BTW...I could use your advice in making weekly supplies of salad for myself...lol. From what I understand, and someone correct me if I'm wrong, Interferon is an anti-viral that helps reduce the viral load in cats. It's supposed to interfere with viral replication, thus the name interferon. I don't know the answer to your question about interferon being bad for a cat that's actually negative or turns negative, but it's a good question and one I bet someone else will be able to answer. I would not do a dental on a cat that might be trying to throw the virus. As little stress as possible is very important right now. I have to admit, I am biased on the subject. I am not a feline dental proponent. I do not do dentals on my pets, unless there is something pressing that needs attention. I would not do blood tests either. These are mostly done on cats that are ill, or as you mentioned, as general yearly tests on older kitties to check their kidney function, thyroid, etc. But blood tests cause stress, so I wouldn't do those either for now, unless you have a pressing need. I saw Stitch's photo. Both he and Zoro are beautiful cats!!! I'm sorry that you lost Zoro. Re: ? Stomatitis ?
Not the stomatitis itself, however, cats with severe stomatitis could die from not eating, it the mouth lesions make it too painful to eat. Likewise, cats with untreated stomatitis could also get secondary oral bacterial infections which could in theory go systematic and be deadly. Re: Stitch - Questions!
Interferon is indeed an immune system booster. Interferon has no effect on test results. A dental is a good idea, oral health is very important, especially for immune-compromised cats. Your vet sounds like he's well-versed and yes, antibiotics before and after would be a good preventive measure. A CBC is a full blood panel, and yes, it gives good idea of basic health, and can show potential problems before they come to a head. It's a good idea if you can afford it. You can post the results here, and others will help you interpret the results. Phaewryn http://ucat.us/domesticcatlinks.html Special Needs Cat Resources
Re: Can fleas cause anemia in adult cats?
They certainly can't help any. I would treat for them ASAP. Anything that REMOVES blood from the cat is adding to the anemia problem. For the record, I have seen TICKS cause a full sized dog severe anemia. I am not sure if fleas are big enough to do the same for an adult cat, I suppose it would depend on how severe the infestation is. Re: vaccine schedule and mixing negatives and positives
I had my FELV+ live with my UNvaccinated negatives for 18 months, all groomed each other constantly. I had NO transmission. I think it is spread by saliva to BLOOD contact, or blood to blood contact, predominately. If it were spread by saliva to saliva, my other cats would have caught it. Hey guys, An addition to the warning to never leave a dryer running while away: never leave your dishwasher running while you're gone either! It can also catch fire. My apartment complex ten years ago experienced this exact thing, and I didn't believe it until I actually spoke with a fireman who verified it. So happy they found more kitties alive!!! That fireman probably saved their lives! I am going to send him snail mail tomorrow. :) Wendy --- dede hicken [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I am heading for bed, but I just called a friend who is a HS volunteer. This morning they found a cat sitting on top of the rubble. Later today they discovered a black kitten peeping through the rubble. Later a large gray one came running out of the woods and sat where his cage had been. He was VERY hungry! These 3 are fine. That brings the total to at least 11 who have survived. 4 of the survivors are in critical care, and the local vets have all chipped in with supplies. The other cats that did survive have all been adopted by volunteers saying they will never be in a cage again The young fireman who was hurt did not leave when the command was given. They ran through the cat area opening cages, then smashing windows and breaking open doors trying to shoo them out. He went back in the last time to grab 2 puppies, and the roof caved in on him. Re: vaccine schedule and mixing negatives and positives
My understanding is that about 70% of adult cats are immune to FELV so it is quite possible to mix UNvaccinated adult cats with a positive and have no problems. It is also possible, if you have one of the remaining 30%, for it to be transmitted even by saliva. Yesterday (Thursday 4/12) they finished the forensics and they accounted for 68 cats. Scooter was not among them. There were four FeLV positive cats at the shelter. The week before the fire, three were moved out of the building. Scooter tested negative and was moved in with the other cats. The other cats that survived were in this area. All I can tell you is that Scooter's body was not found...so there's still hope. They think he escaped to the 14 acre woods next to the HS. Re: Can fleas cause anemia in adult cats?
Well I bought a flea comb and went through Tomi's fur fairly meticulously (he got a little annoyed at me after awhile). I really can't see any evidence of fleas. I got no flea droppings on the comb, a small bit of white dandruff and some fine hair from his undercoat, that's all. Oh, and I combed out a small scab on his neck, probably from him scratching. I took a really close look at the dark dots on his tail, and it looks to me like they are mainly on his skin, maybe even under it. Could it just be dark hair follicles in that area, or possibly even blackheads? I need a microscope for this sort of work. I was kind of hoping he did have fleas, as that would be something fairly easy to treat, but i'm sure not finding much in the way of evidence for them. I'm still not understanding why he scratches and licks suddenly as if he's been bitten. Maybe some sort of allergy to something i'm giving him. You will see more black stuff (Flea Dirt) hopefully catch the critter or two. When you get one on the flea comb rinse it off in water or use a set of tweezers and squash it. You gotta kill it if anything squeeze it with your fingernails. It only takes a flea or two to start the anemia especially with a weak immune system. In a message dated 4/14/2007 8:28:28 P.M. As far as the Iguana Salads, it was a good mix for an Iguana, but probably not as appetizing for a human. I usually made up a week's supply at a time and it varied a little from week to week... The usual mix was a leafy green, usually collards, sometimes parsley or dandelion greens, an orange veggie, usually carrots or squash, and then string beans, parsnips and some vitamin supplements mixed in on top of all that. Into a blender they went. Like I said, great for an Iguana, probably not a good mix for us, even though many of the individual ingredients could be tasty. :) __ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Only I went w/o a dryer for year bc I could not afford to have the outlet replaced. I have since moved into a house but I will not leave the house with the dryer running. I never thought of the dishwasher. I am usually home when I run it . I Will think twice before leaving it running. I am glad more kitties made it out as well. What a beautiful place! My house should only look that clean! Wonderful photos! :) Tee 'n' the Wildlife On Apr 13, 2007, at 12:59 PM, wendy wrote: Melissa, This is WONDERFUL!!! If you saw the facility, you would really be at peace with Cassidy going there. It's a fantastic shelter!!! I told my husband when I was there that in some cases, I bet it's better that some of these babies live out their lives at Best Friends rather than be adopted because it's such a peaceful, well-taken care of, and loving facility. And the girl who runs the shelter is GREAT! I can't pull up her name at the moment (I'm wanting to say Diane), but she really impressed me. I had long conversations with her both days I volunteered in that unit, and she really knows her stuff. Cassidy is so very lucky! There are pics of the cattery at this link: http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/wendy2724/ album?.dir=bea1re2.src=phstore=prodid=.done=http%3a// photos.yahoo.com/ph//my_photos I completely agree with you wanting to verify her FeLV status with another test, especially considering the cost of traveling there. Maybe your husband will consider going with you and you can take a little vacation. They have a cute bed and breakfast there that we stayed in, and the canyons are beautiful! Again, I think this is great. Let us know how things turn out! :) Wendy --- Melissa Lind [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Cassidy has been accepted to Best Friend in Utah for their FeLV ward. This is wonderful, but I am still hoping to find him a forever home in the meantime. He's such a wonderful guy, I'd just hate for him not to go to a real home. He's about one year old and not exhibiting any symptoms, so I've got my fingers crossed for a long, healthy life. Here's the rub: even though I advised them that I wouldn't be able to bring Cassidy out there until July, they've asked that he come around May 1st. I want to confirm his FeLV status with a second IFA in three months before exposing him to other FeLV cats. His first IFA is still not back; the only confirmation of his FeLV status is the Elisa. I know the people who work there are very busy, but I made this clear in my emails, but no one seemed to heed it. I've emailed back saying I just couldn't take him until his status is determined with another test. This would mean he'd be available after July 1st, unless he finds a home before then. So, I'm not sure if they'll be able to keep him on the list since other FeLV+ babies might need a home before then. But, he just can't live in my office room forever! He started crying last night through the door-kept me awake most of the night. I'd go comfort him, but the only way he'd stop is if I'd just quit coming into the room-it's very sad for me. One more thing-even if they could isolate him from the other cats until another test is given-I can't afford to travel to Utah right now! I mentioned that I'd have to save up anyway. I don't know if there is any place to get financial assistance for travel expenses. One contact there suggested that I get in touch with people through their website, especially people in Nebraska. But, how could I convince people that I'm not just stealing their money? Furthermore, I'm not sure if I'd be eligible for assistance because of my husband's income. I know it's technically our money, but when it comes to the rescue cats, my husband is less than enthusiastic about spending his truly hard earned money. If only I had a real job! Around here (the middle of no where) I have too much schooling! G! My only hope is freelance jobs over the internet-which is slow going so far. I guess it's just going to be a waiting game, and in the meantime, I really need to get the word out that Cassidy needs a forever home. If any of you have advice or comments, send them my way! What a little love this girl sounds like! Poor angel on her own with no front claws trying to get into the safety a human's car. It makes me want to go and scoop her up myself, (I won't even mention that to Bruce or my overcrowded household). Who has the cat right now? Has anyone posted flyers at the campground in case she accidently became lost from her people? Someone might be heartbroken and looking for her as I type this. Are you checking local papers for lost ads? Has someone posted a found ad in the paper near where the campgrounds are? They should also file a found report with the local animal shelter and ask if anyone has reported her missing to the shelter. She does have a strike against her because she's black, (I personally love black cats), but she has quite a rescue story and that might help to find her a home. The very best to you and this sweet baby, please let us know what happens to her. Hey... Wasn't there just someone very nice on this list that was thinking about adopting a neg cat??? Who was that? Wasn't it Marissa?? Marissa, did you end up adopting more cats yet?? I have a couple of circuits---one in the bath and one in the kitchen--that shut off with a switch. It doesn't matter what is plugged in, the minute the switch is turned off, so is everything. It makes things so much safer and so does fire extinguishers that you can carry in several places you can reach easily. I have friends you have extinguishers they can't pick up and carry under normal circumstances. They think they can find and carry them upstairs if they need to.NOT!! I am always griping at the boys for not unplugging the toaster when they are done with it. I will have metal, concrete, and non-flammable construction with a sprinkler systems if I ever build. I really like those poured concrete dome houses, they inflate a balloon and pour the concrete over it, then let it set, then deflate the balloon, and you're left with a dome inside. You can do a series of small ones, in a circle, and have a fully enclosed courtyard in the center... that's my plan. http://www.monolithic.com/gallery/nonprofit/index.html http://www.monolithic.com/gallery/homes/index.html Phaewryn http://ucat.us/domesticcatlinks.html Special Needs Cat Resources
Welcome to the group Taylor
Taylor, I must have missed your introduction post. What is your baby's name with the lymphoma? Are you absolutely sure of the diagnosis? How old are the triplets now? It's always so hard to hear such terrible news. Being a mom of a litter of felv bottle babies myself, I really do get the guilt and responsibility you feel for these guys. Raising kits without a kitty mom is always precarious. The 3am feedings, watching them so close for any sign of illness, all the prayers and fears you go through. The relief when they seem out of the woods, eating on their own, seemingly strong and self sufficient. Then after all the painstaking care and nurturing to get the devastating news that they have a heinous, life threatening illness like felv and one of them, lymphoma. You must be reeling. I hope you do realize that no matter what the circumstances that led to them contracting the disease, it's not your fault. You would never have put your fur kids in harms way had you known about the dangers. There's really no way to know for sure when and how they got felv anyway. Being little orphans tells me they probably didn't come from the best environment in the first place. Maybe they lost their fur mom so young because she had felv and succumbed to the stress of giving birth. I guess I'm trying to say, don't beat yourself up for not being able to control what's happened. All we can do is all we can do. Have the other two triplets tested pos as well? What about your other two cats? How about the feral cats of your mother's, how are they doing? Welcome to the list, we're here for you to support you in any way we can. Tell us more. I guess I should have qualified that statement by saying I'm having somebody build a fire suppression system! I did research online first--there are several different companies--but then what I will do is speak with the local firefighters here and see what they have to say as to what company to use. Who knows? I might get a date with a fireman out of it! Taylor Scobie Humphrey [EMAIL PROTECTED] On Apr 15, 2007, at 11:03 PM, Marylyn wrote: How are you putting it in?
