[Felvtalk] a newbie
Hi everyone: I just joined up, this is my first post. To be brief, I volunteer at our local animal shelter, and just adopted a FeLeuk+ girl. I have worked with them at the shelter, but never had one in my home, so I joined up to get some tips and help, when I need it. She is about 2 years of age, named Raja, very pretty, and also very sweet, and a happy girl. The shelter had sent in an IFA test on her, to see where she stands, and we are waiting for the results of that. I have just switched to an integrative vet, and plan to take Raja to her after we get the results. I also have 8 other cats and 1 rat, all of which came from the shelter (fallout from volunteering), and I am usually fostering for them as well, usually cats, but I’ve also had rabbits, ferrets, a hedgehog, a hamster, and rats. Now I have a mama and her 6 babies, which were born here. Of course Raja has her own room, with the rat in his cage to keep her company. Before joining I had never heard of mixing them with non leuk cats-I find this interesting. Not sure I would have the guts to do it, though. I was wondering-are there files on the home site that I can look through before I start asking questions that have probably been asked here a million times? Thanks so much for any future help. [Felvtalk] a question....or two
I am fostering to adopt two positive cats for our Animal Shelter, so as I said in my intro, I am new at this. I just noticed today that Raja has uneven pupils. I know this is not uncommon for these cats, but I was wondering if it is a random thing that happens, or if it is indicative of the stage she is in, or anything else. Any good tips on getting her to eat more? I’ve tried different dry and wet foods. She has lost a pound in 2 weeks, and was small to begin with. Thanks so much! I do know one thing, never trust a vet that says euthanize with no other alternatives. My vet is great, he tells you what could happen and then says it is up to you to keep them or not. My Annie is still going strong at 8 years (she was 4 when I got her). Nitnoy gave up her fight for life after I had her 2 years. It was not the FELV that killed her, but blocked anal glands. The ER vets missed that on sunday and I did not know until I took her to my vet on Monday. He checked her glands first thing, took care of them and I took her home to feed and love her. It was too late, She died purring as she kneaded my shoulder. You can believe that I drive the rest of my pride nuts checking their glands. That is one thing I will not be remiss on again. You will probably have to learn to syringe feed, at least for a short time. Cats who stop eating (for whatever reason) can forget how. They need to be reminded. First, I'd ask your Vet for an appetite stimulant, I use cyproheptadine (Periactin) but Mirtazapine is also recommended. Buy a few cans of a/d, and a 10cc luer slip tip syringe. Hills a/d is a concentrated, pureed food that is meant to be syringe fed, and is easy to use. There are others like Clinicare, which is a liquid, but it's not readily available, and is really meant for tube feeding. Please don't second guess yourself, it's worth trying. My FeLV boy, Gribble, was in very bad shape at one point, and not expected to live. I syringe fed him for about 2 weeks after he decided eating was not something he wanted to do. That was in April. Today he's playing tag with the dog (his best buddy) and generally making life interesting for the rest of the cats in the household. You might want to check and see if the anemia has returned, that might be somewhere to start with treatment. Gribbs is on Interferon and DMG, but that's it right now. At that time, she started licking the walls and our potted plants in addition increasing lethargy. I took her to the vet where she was diagnosed with severe anemia related to FeLV. We were told we'd have to assist her to the rainbow bridge within days of the diagnosis. Thankfully, she's a fighter and is still with us. However, her appetite has been cause for worry. She's crazy about Temptations Treats and deli ham (I know, not the most nutritious diet but I'm thankful for anything she eats). The last two days, though, she won't eat. I've offered her baby food, Tiki Cat, Ziwi's wet food, lunch meat, tuna and her favorite treats but to no avail. I am surprised that a Vet allowed a dehydrated cat to leave without doing something about it, so I'd call and ask why. It's good that she is drinking, but it is impossible to correct clinical dehydration orally, she must have either IV or sub-q fluids. That alone MAY be enough (combined with the B-12) to start her eating again, it can be miraculous. If you don't want to try the Clavamox, then take her (what is her name?) in and request sub-q fluids (and have them show you how to do it at home) and ask about Convenia, a long-lasting injectable antibiotic. I don't generally recommend it, but it's better than nothing, and less stressful for both of you. Explain that medicating orally seems too stressful. You could ask about appetite stimulants, but they need to be given by mouth as well, so maybe you don't want to try. Much depends on how far you want to go. Sub-q's and assist feedings aren't difficult to do, but you may not have the time to give to this. I would say, even if you decide not to continue long-term care, get to the Vet (or another of you don't want to go back there) TODAY for sub-q or IV fluids, and see if that helps.. If you have to work, most Vets will allow drop-off. Please help her by getting the dehydration resolved. She feels totally lousy, and of course doesn't want to eat, or move. She hasn't had any stomatitis or gingivitis issues since then *that I know of*. I don’t know that this is the best solution to Kitty’s issue, but it might be something you could look into as a supplemental option, if she’s good about eating dry food and you think she’s not to the point where it hurts to eat. I don’t give Ember t/d as free-fed dry food any more, but instead give it to her as a treat (four or five pieces in the morning and again at night). Prescription Diet is not the best food, but the texture/composition of this particular formula seem to help with teeth and gum problems. I think it would be good to consider giving Kitty interferon alpha and/or DMG. The latter is very inexpensive and easy to dose (either in semi-hard treat form or liquid form), and it does boost the immune system a bit. Re: [Felvtalk] Need home for FELV cat in Ft. Worth
CW only accepts cats from Shelters, not individuals, unless the owner of the cat dies. It’s a great place, though. I took a cat from our Shelter there last summer and got a tour. The ladies running the place are extremely dedicated. They have had FeLeuk cats there live a good life, to their teens. Chris C. Worth To felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Today at 7:53 PM Gloria Lane and Lance, There are two shelters that I know of in Iowa that rescue Feline Leukemia cats Carmen Conklin at CW Shelter in Northeast Iowa cwshel...@wildblue.net; and Witty Kitty in Solon, Iowa Jennifer Doll jkd...@gmail.com. Not sure how they would get there but maybe they know of a transport if they have an available spot. There is a transport that helps with dogs called Heinz 57 Rescue and Transport in Desoto, Ia. --- maybe they would help with the cat. Also, this lady with the feline leukemia cat needs to know that one test does not a diagnosis make depending upon the test used. It could be a false positive, if the cat is young, it could fight it off with good medical care (I got lucky and had 4 that fought it off), the cat can live with feline leukemia (probably just a shortened life), etc. Is there a reason she does not want to keep the cat? Please keep me posted. Re: [Felvtalk] Holistic vs traditional vets for felv
My FeLeuk girl sees an integrative vet, who practices both holistic and traditional medicine. She gets bicom treatments from her, as well as various holistic medicines. She is stable and even gaining weight on this regimen. I think this is better care for her than she would get from a traditional vet. Just my experience...
