[Felvtalk] a newbie

2013-04-22 Thread cerwin
Hi everyone:
I just joined up, this is my first post. To be brief, I volunteer at our
local animal shelter, and just adopted a FeLeuk+ girl. I have worked
with them at the shelter, but never had one in my home, so I joined up
to get some tips and help, when I need it. She is about 2 years of age,
named Raja, very pretty, and also very sweet, and a happy girl. The
shelter had sent in an IFA test on her, to see where she stands, and we
are waiting for the results of that. I have just switched to an integrative
vet, and plan to take Raja to her after we get the results.
I also have 8 other cats and 1 rat, all of which came from the shelter
(fallout from volunteering), and I am usually fostering for them as well,
usually cats, but I’ve also had rabbits, ferrets, a hedgehog, a hamster,
and rats. Now I have a mama and her 6 babies, which were born here.
Of course Raja has her own room, with the rat in his cage to keep her
company.
Before joining I had never heard of mixing them with non leuk cats-I find
this interesting. Not sure I would have the guts to do it, though.
I was wondering-are there files on the home site that I can look through
before I start asking questions that have probably been asked here a
million times?
Thanks so much for any future help.

[Felvtalk] a question....or two

2013-05-01 Thread cerwin
I am fostering to adopt two positive cats for our Animal Shelter,
so as I said in my intro, I am new at this.
I just noticed today that Raja has uneven pupils. I know this is
not uncommon for these cats, but I was wondering if it is a
random thing that happens, or if it is indicative of the stage
she is in, or anything else.
Any good tips on getting her to eat more? I’ve tried different
dry and wet foods. She has lost a pound in 2 weeks, and was
small to begin with.
Thanks so much!

My FeLV+ girl has anisocoria (uneven pupils). We noticed that one had changed
quite a bit about four years ago. I've never read anything about it indicating
the progress of the disease.

I highly recommend Tiki Cat's two chicken formulas. Ember is addicted. It's
definitely not cheap, but it seems to be high quality food. It's probably
easier to find Fancy Feast Classic Chicken Feast, which was recommended to me
here by Christiane. The ingredients might not be great, but it's very appealing
to them.

It's always a good idea to discuss any symptoms with Raja's vet. They may want
to refer you to a veterinary ophthalmologist or other specialist just to
confirm that nothing else is going on.

I do know one thing, never trust a vet that says euthanize with no other
alternatives. My vet is great, he tells you what could happen and then says
it is up to you to keep them or not. My Annie is still going strong at 8
years (she was 4 when I got her). Nitnoy gave up her fight for life after I
had her 2 years. It was not the FELV that killed her, but blocked anal
glands. The ER vets missed that on sunday and I did not know until I took
her to my vet on Monday. He checked her glands first thing, took care of
them and I took her home to feed and love her. It was too late, She died
purring as she kneaded my shoulder. You can believe that I drive the rest
of my pride nuts checking their glands. That is one thing I will not be
remiss on again. We learn as we go and each one of our babies teaches us
something new. Maybe when it is my time to go, I will have learned all
there is to know. In the meantime, I do my best, that is all I can do.

 Margo toomanykitti...@earthlink.net wrote:

Hi Amanda,

I'm sorry you're having this problem. First, I'd join Feline
assisted feeding;

http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/Feline-Assisted-Feeding/

It is very omportant you address this immediately, to avoid liver
problems.

You will probably have to learn to syringe feed, at least for a
short time. Cats who stop eating (for whatever reason) can forget how.
They need to be reminded. First, I'd ask your Vet for an appetite
stimulant, I use cyproheptadine (Periactin) but Mirtazapine is also
recommended. Buy a few cans of a/d, and a 10cc luer slip tip syringe.
Hills a/d is a concentrated, pureed food that is meant to be syringe fed,
and is easy to use. There are others like Clinicare, which is a liquid,
but it's not readily available, and is really meant for tube feeding.

Please don't second guess yourself, it's worth trying. My FeLV boy,
Gribble, was in very bad shape at one point, and not expected to live. I
syringe fed him for about 2 weeks after he decided eating was not
something he wanted to do. That was in April. Today he's playing tag with
the dog (his best buddy) and generally making life interesting for the
rest of the cats in the household.

You might want to check and see if the anemia has returned, that
might be somewhere to start with treatment. Gribbs is on Interferon and
DMG, but that's it right now.

All the best to you both,

Margo

Hello everyone!

This is my first time using this forum :)

I have a ten month old kitty, Polli, who was diagnosed with FeLV about
two months ago. At that time, she started licking the walls and our
potted plants in addition increasing lethargy. I took her to the vet
where she was diagnosed with severe anemia related to FeLV. We were told
we'd have to assist her to the rainbow bridge within days of the
diagnosis. Thankfully, she's a fighter and is still with us. However,
her appetite has been cause for worry. She's crazy about Temptations
Treats and deli ham (I know, not the most nutritious diet but I'm
thankful for anything she eats). The last two days, though, she won't
eat. I've offered her baby food, Tiki Cat, Ziwi's wet food, lunch meat,
tuna and her favorite treats but to no avail. I understand that the end
may be near but I want to give everything a shot before I make that call.

So, my question is, what do you give your cat that they just can't say no
to? I'd love and appreciate any suggestions!

Thank you,
-Amanda

I'm with Lorrie - keep Augmentin in your medicine cabinet for those occasions
when you decide to put your hand between two snarling cats. I have done this
stupid thing twice. Now I just hurl a pot of cold water into the fray and then
mop the floor as the two go to their respective favorite spots to dry off. If I
have to separate a couple of entwined rolling cats, I use a broom handle. I
once just slammed a box over one cat. The other cat looked puzzled, then walked
away. I held the boxed cat in place for about 5 minutes, then slowly lifted the
box. He shook himself off and walked away too. If you interrupt their train of
thought, their focus, the fight goes away if they are neutered/spayed cats.

Ember was four years old when she tested positive, but she must have had the
disease prior to that. She might have been as young as two or three years old
when the infection became persistent. We still don't know how the virus got
into the house, whether through Ember herself or a stray kitten my parents took
in who was later euthanized due to symptoms a year and a half later.

About lymphoma, please join the feline lymphoma Yahoo! group. The support there
is amazing, and a vet frequently comments there.

I'm glad that the others aren't showing symptoms. My Ember has thankfully had
very few issues with the virus. Her main symptoms are: low white blood cell
count, anisocoria (one pupil is fully open all the time), and some very minor
bouts of diarrhea (not in the last few years) and upper respiratory infections.
For the most part, she gets sick like a normal cat.

You may want to check this blog post that covers cat food:

http://www.naturalcatcareblog.com/2010/12/the-7-best-natural-commercial-cat-foods-so-far/

Ember eats Tiki Cat these days, which is the priciest stuff, but other brands
like Hound Gatos and Great Life Essentials are more affordable.

You do have to be careful when choosing a place for your cats. I have one,
Rustic Hollow and they have provisions for FELV cats. They do ask you give
a set fee per cat per year of expected life. It is not bad considering they
have 6 or 7 houses for the cats with outdoor caticos. They will provide the
food your cats are used to, even my Blue Buffalo or Wellness. I wouldn't
even mind retiring there to one of the houses as a live in caretaker. I
have no family and I would have more than enough cats to love.

  Hi Jennifer,

Well, I think she will need some help. I am surprised
that a Vet allowed a dehydrated cat to leave without doing something about it,
so I'd call and ask why. It's good that she is drinking, but it is impossible
to correct clinical dehydration orally, she must have either IV or sub-q
fluids. That alone MAY be enough (combined with the B-12) to start her eating
again, it can be miraculous. If you don't want to try the Clavamox, then take
her (what is her name?) in and request sub-q fluids (and have them show you how
to do it at home) and ask about Convenia, a long-lasting injectable antibiotic.
I don't generally recommend it, but it's better than nothing, and less
stressful for both of you. Explain that medicating orally seems too stressful.
You could ask about appetite stimulants, but they need to be given by mouth as
well, so maybe you don't want to try.

Much depends on how far you want to go. Sub-q's and
assist feedings aren't difficult to do, but you may not have the time to give
to this. I would say, even if you decide not to continue long-term care, get to
the Vet (or another of you don't want to go back there) TODAY for sub-q or IV
fluids, and see if that helps.. If you have to work, most Vets will allow
drop-off.

Please help her by getting the dehydration resolved.
She feels totally lousy, and of course doesn't want to eat, or move. At least
she will feel better, and that's critical, whatever course you elect to follow.

  All the best,

  Margo

to be able to pull out of this. :-(

Regular cats can also have those symptoms. The B12 shot is good. Does she

back. It was diagnosed as probably a malignant tumor. I suggested it was a
non-malignant fatty tumor. Three years later Mr. Snowy is still fat and going
strong and the tumor has absorbed. Maybe it's luck and they will use up the
last of their nine lives eventually but until then start off simple but
cautious and do always take to vet but listen with both ears open and your
brain cells on high alert.

Hugs and blessings to you and the fur kids.

 Hey all-

This is the first time I have posted to the forum. I have two FeLV
positive cats, one two and one three years old. The older cat has never had
any issues with illness whatsoever, but the younger has only recently started
showing signs that her illness has caught up with her. Just within the last
few days she has become very lethargic, stopped eating (and only drinks a small
amount) and whenever she stands or walks she seems very unsteady and wobbly. I
took her to the vet yesterday; they checked her blood counts which were low and
said her kidney enzymes were elevated. They also said they could hear a heart
murmur which is probably related to possibly being dehydrated. They gave her a
B12 shot and I took her home. I already said if worst came to worst I wouldn't
put her through any unnecessary treatments or subject her to any painful
procedures and that I would strive only to provide the best supportive care for
her while she was alive so that she would have the best chances. I'm just
wondering if any of you have gone through the same thing and if I can expect
her to pull out of this on her own, or, if she doesn't, how long she might have
left. I'm sincerely heartbroken. I really thought I had nursed her through
the most risky part of her illness (kittenhood) and that she would now go on to
live a halfway long life. In any case, if anyone has any advice or information
I would greatly appreciate it.

 Thanks all,

 Jennifer

You can get DMG without a prescription at Amazon, and
I imagine many other places. That's where I get it.

Just saw your post here and on the Yahoo! list, but thought that it’d be
better if I replied here.

Before we knew my FeLV+ cat was FeLV+, her then-vet said that her gums were
becoming irritated, and that I needed to switch her to Prescription Diet
t/d. I did, and the irritation seemed to go away. She hasn't had any
stomatitis or gingivitis issues since then *that I know of*.

I don’t know that this is the best solution to Kitty’s issue, but it might
be something you could look into as a supplemental option, if she’s good
about eating dry food and you think she’s not to the point where it hurts to
eat. I don’t give Ember t/d as free-fed dry food any more, but instead give
it to her as a treat (four or five pieces in the morning and again at
night). Prescription Diet is not the best food, but the texture/composition
of this particular formula seem to help with teeth and gum problems.

I think it would be good to consider giving Kitty interferon alpha and/or
DMG. The latter is very inexpensive and easy to dose (either in semi-hard
treat form or liquid form), and it does boost the immune system a bit. Your
holistic vet might be able to tell you more about DMG and interferon.

Best wishes for Kitty,

Lance

She is at a little over 10lbs and gets canned food twice a day and dr Lisa

Re: [Felvtalk] Need home for FELV cat in Ft. Worth

2013-11-10 Thread cerwin
CW only accepts cats from Shelters, not individuals,
unless the owner of the cat dies. It’s a great place, though.
I took a cat from our Shelter there last summer and got a
tour. The ladies running the place are extremely dedicated.
They have had FeLeuk cats there live a good life, to their
teens.

To felvtalk@felineleukemia.org
Gloria Lane and Lance,
There are two shelters that I know of in Iowa that rescue Feline Leukemia cats
Carmen Conklin at CW Shelter in Northeast Iowa cwshel...@wildblue.net; and
Witty Kitty in Solon, Iowa Jennifer Doll jkd...@gmail.com. Not sure how they
would get there but maybe they know of a transport if they have an available
spot. There is a transport that helps with dogs called Heinz 57 Rescue and
Transport in Desoto, Ia. --- maybe they would help with the cat.

Also, this lady with the feline leukemia cat needs to know that one test does
not a diagnosis make depending upon the test used. It could be a false
positive, if the cat is young, it could fight it off with good medical care (I
got lucky and had 4 that fought it off), the cat can live with feline leukemia
(probably just a shortened life), etc. Is there a reason she does not want to
keep the cat?

Please keep me posted. Thanks, Karen

Re: [Felvtalk] Holistic vs traditional vets for felv

My FeLeuk girl sees an integrative vet, who practices both
holistic and traditional medicine. She gets bicom treatments

from her, as well as various holistic medicines. She is stable
and even gaining weight on this regimen. I think this is
better care for her than she would get from a traditional
vet.
