Re: [Felvtalk] STORM - QUESTIONS/reply

2012-10-29 Thread kat
Dot,

Your husband sounds like a real kitty lover too!! The shelters he has put
together sound great and I hope the kitties weather the storm safely.

I have been told that there is a high pressure system out in the Atlantic
(near Iceland?) that is preventing Sandy from going out to sea. So I have been
sending "dissipate" prayers to that system so that Sandy can change direction
before making landfall this evening!! I'm located in the northwest corner of
NJ, so I shouldn't get "hit", but losing power is always a concern.

Your kitties are in my prayers!!

I am in Freehold, NJ. Inland So, you are in New York? Or is that near Long
Island? Do you have any outdoor colonies? My hub over the last year has built
small dog house type shelters (he is a carpenter) with tarping on the rooves.
They are surrounded by tee pee pallets piled on each other. Then covered in
tarping or plastic stapled on with his staple gun. There are piles of furniture
dumped in the area and some of the houses are within those, protected. There
are 2 dry feed stations we just filled tonight. I just still am very worried.

RE: my cat is not having bowel movements (jayden)

Be careful of the mineral oil - mix it well into food, no "puddles".
My vet has said that cats don't smell the oil and can "inhale" it, causing
respiratory distress.

RE: Wisconsin cat hunting: bad and good news!

2005-04-13 Thread Kat

I do wish we could get a resolution passed to allow the hunters to be
hunted too!

Every hunter should be required to carry x amount of life insurance
(aka death benefits) and they should be "fair game" if caught hunting
out of season, or hunting in a no trespassing area, or hunting endangered
species, or...

This way (assuming this would be enough of a deterrant), MAYBE they would
pay attention to what they do and how they do it.

(I do not mean to insult the hunters who follow the rules and use all
parts of what they kill - only the idiots who would shoot a cow thinking
it was a deer, or the ones who use fireworks to flush out their prey,
etc.)

Dasani water (by the makers of Coke) has potassium and magnesium added.
It's probable not very much - but it's better than most water.

Re: Problem - I think?-HOLD THE TEA TREE!!

2005-06-08 Thread Kat
Hi All,
The part of the Aloe that is toxic is the Latex layer beneath the skin.
This is NOT the part used for commercial Aloe preparations/gels. So
as long as you don't cut open an Aloe leaf and rub it on your cat, it
is okay to use the gel. As always, check the labels and try not to use
a formula loaded with preservatives.

Tea Tree Oil - however - is a NO NO for Cats!!
Cats cannot metabolize the oils like dogs and humans can, and it ends up
harming the liver. Even Cat Fancy has run articles warning against using
most essential oils on Cats.

RE: OT: PLEASE can ANYONE help - Blind Kitten Very Sad

2005-06-14 Thread Kat
Hi Hideyo,
Teresa says he'll be okay where he is until I get there.
(actually, they still aren't sure he's a "he" yet) and I will
end up keeping him as long as the rest of the crew warms up
to him.

I will have my vet check him over and test for FIV/FeLV and
then I'll see how well he does with the crew. It won't be the
first kitten I've rescued - last year I rescued a tiny little
black boy from a co-worker's back yard - named him "Solo" since
he was the only kitten (mom was a feral). He was born without
his upper eyeLIDS, and when my vet neutered him, she did some
cosmetic surgery and formed eyelids out of some extra skin below
each eye. Now he thinks he's just the cutest little Cat's Meow...

RE: OT: PLEASE can ANYONE help - Blind Kitten Very Sad

2005-06-14 Thread Kat
Teresa says the horses don't stay near the barn except for feeding,
and the kitten doesn't venture too far (stays mostly around the
d-g house that's set up for the mom-cat). And during feeding, someone
is always there to keep an eye on the little one - and they try to
supplement the mom's milk with KMR. The mom cat is a feral barn cat,
and they do see him nurse from her, so if Teresa brings him home there
will be less feeding, less interaction with people, etc.
I'm going to see if there are any low cost spay clinics in her area so
she/they can get the mom-cat spayed. Keep your fingers and paws crossed.

Re: Please - I need another big prayer for George!!

2005-06-16 Thread Kat
Dear Hideyo,
I too hope you convince George to let you catch him soon.

Have you really scrubbed out the trap and then sprayed it
with some feliway and sprinkled catnip all over it?
Sometimes you really have to change the smell of the trap.

Is the trap inside a large black garbage bag that is taped
around it to keep it from flapping in the wind? Some cats
find the safety of a "hole" more reassuring than an open trap.

Good luck!

Re: (UPDATE) Attention: Noah's Ark Rescue / Blind Kitten

2005-06-20 Thread Kat
Hi All,

I picked up the blind kitten this weekend (he's actually a She), and one
of her sisters (I figured her sister would help her adjust faster).
No names yet, but I'm leaning towards Artemis and Athena from mythology.
(Artemis: Greek Goddess of the night and the hunt. Protector of women.
Athena: Goddess of wisdom, war, art, industry, justice, and skill.) They
are both 4-5 weeks old, grey & black tabbies. I'm bottle feeding them at
the moment, but hope to get them eating on their own in a week or 2.
I'll try to get some pictures...

Re: question bout kittens....

2005-06-27 Thread Kat
Hi MC -
Since you know the status of your current kittens & moms and
if at least one of your mom-cats has been vaccinated for FeLV,
would it be possible to combine 2 litters so that the vaccinated
mom could nurse these 2 new unknowns?
I don't think testing @ 2 weeks would be very reliable, and it
would be too risky mixing unknowns in with your current kittens,
but if you could free up 1 of the moms...

Update on the little blind kitten

2005-06-28 Thread Kat
Hi All,

Athena, the little blind kitty, and her sister Artemis went to the vet
yesterday. My vet says Artemis weighs 12.5 oz and Athena weighs 11.5 oz.
Both got dewormed (strongid) and are too young (only 5 weeks old) to be
tested or vaccinated, so they'll go back in about 3-4 weeks.

My vet says Athena's right eye socket has no orb at all, anf the left
socket has a very small orb, but that she still probably can't even see
shadows. But we'll be re-checking each time she goes to the vet. It
doesn't affect her good nature - she loves to be held, cuddled, and bottle
fed. She was having some difficulty transitioning to drinking from a
bowl, so I set up a small water bottle in her cage, and both kittens have
adapted quite well to it. Artemis enjoys being cuddled too (what kitten
doesn't - even if it's only from the mom-cat).

I've created a photo album so you could see their pictures. Go to
http://albums.bemikitties.com/
scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on the Pet Albums category
and then click on "Athena and Artemis" for their pictures.
(Thank you Belinda for creating the Be-mi-kitties website!!)

They were named after 2 greek goddesses:
Artemis is the greek goddess of the hunt and protector of women.
Athena is the greek goddess of wisdom and justice (and justice is always
blind)

Oh Terrie,
I'm sorry it's Ling's time to leave, but so grateful to you for showing
him love, dignity and respect - Gentle hugs to both of you.
Kat (Mew Jersey)
---
Good morning all,
Remember the Senior Siamese that was willed to me?
Well, I'm going to be taking him to the Vet today to send him off to the
bridge. He is in the final
phase of kidney failure. I don't want him to suffer anymore so I have
decided to let him go. He has
stopped eating three days ago. I have force fed him and he is throwing it
all back up. He has also been
fed intravenously as well. He has loss so much weight as well.
He was about 15 yrs old when I got him. He was in poor health and all. He
was Hyper-T so that didn't
help matters. He had 7 claws imbedded into his pads (minor surgery) and
Ear Mites prior to me getting
him.
I'm going to do this without my husband around because he always makes it
harder. (he is a softy)
So wish "Ling" a safe journey to the bridge.

Hi Jen,
Would it be possible to send some of the medals down to the
Angel Wings Rescuers who have been working so tirelessly for
the unfortunate animals that got caught up in all of this??
I know it's not much to give them in return for what they've
been doing, but I think it would be marvelous if it could be
done.

Kerry,
I'm so sorry Flavia is gone -
I'm glad you were able to spend the last night with her, and that you were

worrying about her. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this sad

Re: Hi Everyone/Fleas

2005-08-10 Thread Kat
Hi Julie,

It's good to hear from you again - in spite of all the $hi+ you've gone
through this year. I can sympathize about the fleas!! I have one cat
(semi feral - long hair) "Meowmee" who must have a flea allergy. She has
scratched her neck area RAW. The others are just beginning to scratch
more than normal. (My vet says this is a very bad flea summer by the way.)
Anyway, I can't put any frontline on Meowmee (yet) because of all the
broken skin around her neck - so my vet gave me some Capstar tablets to
give her (1 every 2 days) until her skin heals enough for the frontline.

Capstar works within 30 minutes to kill any fleas on the cat but only
lasts for up to 48 hours in the system. I don't have my bill with me, so
I can't tell you prices, but it's not cheap enough to keep them on it
long-term. However, it CAN be used in conjunction with the frontline to
really blitz the toughest of flea infestations.

Here's hoping that your luck and life is on the upswing now!

Hi Michelle,
Welcome to Mew Jersey!!
Just for your records, in case you ever need a second opinion, the vet I
use is at Fredon Animal Hospital (973) 383-0811 - her name is Linda Grau.
Fredon is about 10 miles north of you (up Rt 206, then over to Rt 94) in

Hi Hideyo,

Keep giving your baby the formula and make sure you stimuate him to pee
and poop afterward. The rubber tip is soft enough that it shouldn't
scratch up his "innards", so all you can do right now is help him to
eliminate it. Athena, my little blind kitty did the same thing, although
she was about 7 weeks old, and she was fine.

RE: OT: Help - a 5 wk old kitten swallowed a tip of the nipple inthebottle..

2005-09-15 Thread Kat

No, I never really saw it come out, but I wasn't mashing up her poops to
see if it was there either (she had already been using the litter box).

Your baby may be "off" his feed for a day or 2 - just keep feeding him
(even if it's smaller but more frequent feedings). Keep an eye on his
belly - if it looks like its getting bloated, then take him back to the
vet.

Sending soothing tummy thoughts to him, and calming hugs to you.

Re: Question about Euthanasia and my Grace

2005-09-22 Thread Kat
Nina,
My heart goes out to you - this is such a difficult time.

I would ask Grace what she wants - to go on her own or to be
assisted. If she asks for assistance, then I would also ask her
if she wants someone "new" to come now, or if she wants to wait
for "her vet" Dr.Ortega.

Please know that we all love and support you, no matter what course
of action is decided on. We've walked the same path and we will walk
with you too. I, too, have not posted very much over this last year -
way too much "stuff" going on, sapping my spirit - but I do read, and I
do pray for everyone on this list, and I have followed your posts about
Grace.

Re: HELP...Skunk

2005-09-29 Thread Kat
Cherie -
Do you have any Vinegar? (Apple Cider/White/Balsamic it doesn't matter)
Do you have any Douche? Do you have any Tomatoe Juice?
There is also a product you can get at pet supply stores called Skunk off.

Whatever you do have on hand - drench him in it - sort of like basting a
turkey - over and over. This should help alleviate the overwhelming smell
somewhat. Good luck.

Re: fleas/ferals

2005-10-05 Thread Kat
Hi Lohna,
I also have a few house ferals - can't touch them with a comb,
can't even put the Frontline drops on them - so my vet gave me
tablets called "CapStar". For non-ferals, you can just pop one tab
down their throats - for the ferals, I have to crush the tab and
hide it in really smelly/great tasting kitty food. CapStar works
within 30 minutes to one hour to kill all the fleas on the cat, and
it gets processed out of the cat's system within 48 hours.
So at my house, I use the Frontline on all of my healthy non-ferals,
and for the ferals I use the CapStar. Good Luck with Kittypoo.

Re: fleas/hypocrisy...

2005-10-05 Thread Kat
Hi Patti,

LOL, I can sooo relate to what you're saying about feeling like a
hypocrite, except for me it's fleas and mosquitos...

The way I see it, they're free to live their lives - just NOT in my
house!! Outside, I will put stuff on ME (OFF, Skin so Soft, etc.) to
repel the little biters, but hey - it's their territory, so I don't
put up bug zappers or try to wipe them out. But if they want to live,
they must stay outside!! I've been known to 'rescue' moths and spiders
and even flies that get into my house - and I'm very jumpy around spiders.
But ... fleas and mosquitos are a whole different story.

Maybe I'm just rationalizing, but I figure there has to be a line drawn
somewhere. I mean, if I were to get an intestinal parasite or salmonella
or even a bacterial infection from somewhere, I would take the appropriate
meds to kill them off - I wouldn't just let them go on living inside me.
Same with the cats - if they get roundworms or something - they get meds!
But I don't purposely go out and try to eradicate them - I do believe
everything has a purpose, somehow, even if I don't know what it is...

Re: Devastated...Mr. Dobbs My New FIV Rescue Died After Neuter Surgery

2006-06-29 Thread Kat
Oh Rachel,

I'm so sorry this happened to you & your sweet Mr.Dobbs. I believe
another list member, Hideyo, had a female kitty that died after a spay.
She was in her carrier just waiting to be picked up, and when Hideyo got
there she had already passed on. He didn't die alone, he knew you were
there and that you loved him - even if it was such a short time. There are
no words to comfort you right now, but please know that you are in my
thoughts & prayers.

Re: Check out Clumping Clay Kitty Litters and Your Cat's Health

2006-07-05 Thread Kat

I found out (first hand) that bears like it too!!

I had been ordering mine online before it became available in my local
stores, and one day the delivery was left on my porch while I was at work.
Being tired when I got home, I figured I'd bring the box in after dinner -
but before I got the chance a "yearling" black bear was on my proch trying
to rip the box open.

Re: Ceasar is no longer in pain (please add him to the CLS)

2006-07-07 Thread Kat
Dear Nina,

I'm crying with you - I was so hoping he would recover.
He knows you loved him, and he knows you only wanted the best for him.
Please don't think of it as a failure on your part - you succeeded in
more ways than you realize. That is why he came back to you - because he
knew you would help him. He knew it was his time, and that he lived as
long as he chose to. Even the animals have SOME free choice, and he chose
you to help him make his transition, gently, peacefully, and lovingly.

I will light a candle for him tonight. Please know that you are in my
thoughts and prayers.

Sleep soft, dear Ceasar.

Re: OT-Rabies Vaccine

2006-07-10 Thread Kat
Hi Roxane,

One of the clinics here in NJ is also going to a one year rabies vaccine -
I asked them in particular why, and they said it's a slightly different
vaccine, one that uses a different adjuvant (delivery liquid), and that it
has a shorter immunity duration. Since they are not my primary vet (only
my emergency clinic) I did not push it, but if you want I can find out
more about it.

RE: Worried about your other kitties/Felvtalk Digest, Vol 18, Issue 25

2006-07-12 Thread Kat
Beth,

Please do not be so worried - I have had 3 kitties in my house of cats
over the past 20 years that had the dry form of FIP - but none of the
others have had any problems whatsoever!! These were 3 non-overlapping
kitties, so they didn't get it from each other either.

FIP is a mutation of a very common corona virus that causes digestive
upsets. All of my cats must have been exposed to this corona virus, but
only 3 out of around 70 (yes, I rescue) in those 20 years mutated and
died.

Go ahead and clean everything well, use bleach in the laundry, keep
your other kitties as healthy as possible, but don't obsess.

Oh Nina,

LOL - I can just picture you marching over there in pajamas armed with
a carrier and a dish of food - Thank you for all that you've done for her.
Yes, it's sad that her 5 little ones were never born, but it would have
been even sadder if all 6 had perished due to her poor health condition.
Did the vet test her for FeLV and FIV??

I'm sending out "good home vibes" to help you find her a forever home.

Re: Naomi has become an angel...

2006-08-02 Thread Kat
Oh Hideyo,

I'm so very sorry your time with little Naomi was so short.
Even tho I haven't posted much lately, I've been saying prayers
for both of you. One of the songs I heard several years ago, sung
by Clint Black is call "Something that we do", and even tho it is
a love song to his wife, the second verse sooo applies to our bonds
with our furkids...

It's holding tight, lettin' go
It's flying high and laying low
Let your strongest feelings show
And your weakness, too
It's a little and a lot to ask
An endless and a welcome task
Love isn't something that we have
It's something that we do

Sleep soft, dear Naomi...

Re: Patches

2006-08-03 Thread Kat
Diane,

Have you tried the raw liver shake yet?
Even tho it's primarily used for anemia, it's
supposed to be very healing (was developed by
a holistic vet in Hawaii). My kitties always
seem to like it whenever they've been under
the weather. It's listed in the archives, but
if you have trouble finding it, I can forward
another copy to you.

Re: Now Peter has become an angel - so soon...

2006-08-08 Thread Kat
Dear Hideyo,

I'm sorry Peter had to leave so soon, but you can never know what fate
might have awaited him if you had left him out instead of bringing him
home.

My heart aches for all of the losses you've endured, and I understand
completely about not spending enough time individually because of the
sheer numbers... But they DO know your love, and the DO have each other,
and they DO understand.

My thoughts and prayers are with you now.
Sleep Soft, dear Peter...

Re: just need to vent about my feral feluk

2006-08-09 Thread Kat
Hi Jeni,

I just wanted to add -
Instead of reading out loud to your wall kitty, if you know anything about
chanting, try it. It also will help her get used to your voice, and can
be very soothing at the same time. I also have a very feral black kitty,
named "Lenore" (after the lady in Edgar Allen Poe's "The Raven"). I had
her in a home made "Kitty Kastle" (roughly 6 foot by 6 foot by 2 feet
wide with plenty of platforms) for about a year. She never tamed down and
would just as soon rip my face off every time I tried to feed her/clean
the litter/etc. I finally just bit the bullet and let her out to
intermingle with the other cats. It took several months before she would
even let me see her, but now she will sit there and stare me down when I
enter the room. I still can't touch her, but she has established herself
with the other cats and I will find her sleeping curled up with them alot.
Just be patient. The other suggestions you've already gotten will help you
too. And if you do use the Rescue Remedy in her water bowl, take some for
yourself too! Please keep us posted.

Re: Frustrated with Vets in AZ

2006-08-21 Thread Kat
Hi Karen,

Waaay back in the early years of this list, we had a member from Glendale,
AZ (about 35 miles from you). Her name is Irene Hart and her rescue group
is AZ-HART, and I believe they do adoptions out of the PetSmart in
Phoenix. She's no longer on this list, but the latest contact info I
found was: (602) 843-4690, Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Maybe she can direct you to a good vet???

Re: Satch is coughing

2006-08-22 Thread Kat
Hi Leslie,

Sorry for all of your turmoil about your trip.
Can you have Satch boarded at your vets office while you are gone?
That way they can force feed him (and they are usually pros at it)
or even give him nutrients via IV if necessary. It would give you alot
more peace of mind during your trip...

Oh Tonya,

I'm so sorry that Popeye has gone to the Bridge. And I just don't

the future instead of docking you - g - stupid people hurt my brain.

Re: Positive Thoughts for Slinky (and his Mom)

2006-08-24 Thread Kat
Hi MJ,

Slinky will be just fine, and will welcome you back with hugs and kitty
kisses!! Talk to him now, as if he understands words, and tell him what
is going on, and when you'll be back, and that you'll bring him back a
kitty present, etc. By talking to him out loud you will be able to relax
more about your trip, and he WILL understand that you are not going to
abandon him. The more you relax, the less worried he will be. It sounds
like you have everything covered. Just leave your number (and your vet's
number) with your co-worker, and maybe call your vet to let them know who
will be watching Slinky for you, so that they have that info on file. I'm
sending you <<>> hugs. Have a safe trip.

Re: OT: Need feedback please

2006-08-31 Thread Kat
Belinda,

I think the re-wording Marissa suggested is good - with only a minor
adjustment. I would add "if they haven't already died during the
experimentation." to make it read...

Unfortunately, there are many people in the world who would take advantage
of a free pet and use it for all kinds of unthinkable things. Believe it
or not, there are actually people who use cats to train dogs to fight
(encouraging the dog to aggressively mame and kill the cat), or to feed
their snakes. There are actually sick, demented people who look for free
animals to torture and beat until they finally get bored and kill them.
Additionally, there are bunchers who sell free or cheap pets for anywhere
from $30 to $100 to labs who will experiment on them and then kill them
if they haven't already died during the experimentation.
I know you dont want any of these things to happen to Tiger, and that is
why we require a minimum fee rather than allowing people to give away
their pets.

What do you think??

RE: Question about different FeLV tests

Gina,

Maybe if you had said ImmunoFlourescent Assay she could have asked
one of the vet techs?

I wouldn't switch vets just yet - you need to find out if the vet thinks
the way the receptionist does (or not). If it's just her, and you like
your vet, stay. You can always devise ways of dealing (or not) with the
receptionist.

Re: Question about different FeLV tests

2006-08-31 Thread Kat

Not all bats carry rabies, so don't get too paranoid.

The following is found @ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bat

"There are estimated to be about 1,100 species of bats worldwide,
accounting for about 20% of all mammal species."
"Only 0.5% of bats carry rabies. However, of the very few cases of rabies
reported in the United States every year, most are caused by bat bites."

The following is from:
http://www.idph.state.ia.us/adper/common/pdf/cade/rabies_exposure_bats.pdf#search=%22bat%20species%20rabies%22

"In incidents where the bat is confirmed as, or highly likely to be, a big
brown or little brown bat species, i.e. house bats the risk of rabies
transmission is greatly reduced compared to silverhair/pipistrelle species
and Mexican free-tail species (not present in Iowa). After careful
examination of patient(s) and no evidence of bite it would be permissible
to consider not administering rabies post-exposure treatment."

And from: http://www.batcon.org/home/index.asp?idPage=91&idSubPage=62

"Which bat variances of the rabies virus have been transmitted to humans?
Rabies virus variances associated with six of the 45 bat species living in
the continental United States have been transmitted to humans. These
include the silver-haired bat (Lasionycteris noctivagans), the Mexican
free-tailed bat (Tadarida brasiliensis), the big brown bat (Eptesicus
fuscus), the eastern pipistrelle (Pipistrellus subflavus), and two species
that were not positively identified. These are suspected of having been
western (Myotis ciliolabrum) and eastern (M. leibii) small-footed myotis.
Variances of the rabies virus attributed to bats that commonly live in
buildings have been associated with eight human fatalities in U.S.
history.
Do large bat populations lead to increased incidence of rabies
transmission to humans?
The largest urban bat populations consist almost exclusively of colonial
species, and there is no evidence linking them to increased transmission
to humans. Tens of thousands of people have closely observed the
emergences of 1.5 million Mexican free-tailed bats at the Congress Avenue
Bridge in Austin, Texas each summer for over 16 years without incident. In
fact, though Austin, San Antonio, and several other Texas Hill Country
towns likely support the highest bat densities in America, they have
recorded no human cases of bat-transmitted rabies."

Re: crackers IFA was positive need help a.s.a.p.

Hi Kayte,

Since you only had Pokemon since last Oct, and she didn't appear to be
sick when you got her (at least that's what I assume - otherwise you
wouldn't have mixed the 2 cats?), it could very well be that Pokemon
didn't flare up until just recently and therefore Crackers is testing
positive because he was just recently exposed. Since Crackers seems to be
a healthy 5 yo, he could very well throw the virus off. I would look for
another vet - where are you located?

Re: vitamin c?

2006-09-06 Thread Kat
Hi Kayte,

Yes, you can get several different varieties of Vit C at the health food
store. You can even find them at most pharmacies and even some
supermarkets now. It's for people, and the doses listed on the bottles
are *generally* geared towards people weighing about 120 to 150 lbs - so
if your kitty only weighs 12-15 lbs, divide by 10. Start on the low side
and work your way up slowly to "tolerance" - too much too fast will cause
diarrhea.

Also, as far as vets go - Terri (one of our listmembers) swears by
Dr. Emily Jarvis at the Carnegie Cat Clinic in Princeton, NJ.

Michelle is also on this list and says her mom uses Martinsville Animal
Clinic. She completely loves one of the three vets there, the only woman,
Dr. Caille (pronounced kay-lee?).

And this link will give you the AAFP list of cat-specific vets in NJ
http://www.aafponline.org/find_results.php?name=&city=Any&state=NJ&country=USA&zipcode=&Submit=Submit
(you can searh again with your zip code to narrow things down a bit)

RE: Minnion has gone to the Bridge

2006-09-21 Thread Kat
Dear Kayte,

I'm so sorry to hear about sweet little Minnion... It does feel comforting
to know she is now with Pokies. And I'm sorry your son is having such a
hard time - 2 losses so close together.

I came across the following story a while ago - okay, it's about a little
boy and his Dog, but wanted to share it with you in case you think your
son might understand. (I do not know who the author is - sorry)

Kat (Mew Jersey)
---
Why Dogs don't Live As Long As People (Out of the mouths of Babes!)

Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish
Wolfhound named Belker. The dog's owners; Ron, his wife, Lisa, and their
little boy, Shane were all very attached to Belker and they were hoping
for a miracle. I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer.

I told the family there were no miracles left for Belker, and offered to
perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home. As we made
arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for the
four-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt Shane could learn
something from the experience.

The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker's family
surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last
time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on.

Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away. The little boy
seemed to accept Belker's transition without any difficulty or confusion.
We sat together for a while after Belker's death, wondering aloud about
the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives. Shane, who
had been listening quietly, piped up, "I know why." Startled, we all
turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me - I'd never
heard a more comforting explanation.

He said, "Everybody is born so that they can learn how to live a good life
- like loving everybody and being nice, right?" The four-year-old
continued, "Well, animals already know how to do that, so they don't have
to stay as long."

Re: Buzz emancipated

2008-04-09 Thread Kat
Hi Sue,

(I mostly lurk these days, but have been around for a long time..)

To help your other cats, you will want to keep their immune systems as
strong as possible. So almost everything you do for Buzz will help the
others too. The high quality food, the kitty vitamins, using lactoferrin
or colostrum or DMG, reducing the amount of stress, etc, will help all of
your kitties.

If you are worried about introductory hissy fits, you can start now by
rubbing your kitties with a towel (to get their scent on it) and putting
it in Buzz's room, and rubbing Buzz with another towel to get the others
used to his scent. Also, you can put a dab of vanilla flavoring on the
back of each kitty's neck & at the base of their tails to help them all
smell alike when you finally let Buzz out. I have also heard people
recommend Feliway (either the plug-ins or the spray, or both) to help
reduce stress/anxiety during introductions - start using this a few days
before letting them mix. Rescue Remedy can also help. You can put it in
their water or rub some onto their ears/paws, and you can even take some
to help you relax too!

Re: [Felvtalk] Buzz is gone/Donations

2008-11-24 Thread Kat
Dear Sue,

My heart goes out to you - you made the right choice for Buzz, and you
made it from love. It seems that alot of kitties do NOT like going to the
vet (thus, do not like being put in a carrier) - my Cinders (not FeLV+)
also fought her last trip even tho the tumor in the back of her throat had
grown enough that she only lapped at the juices in her food for over a
week .

Sleep soft, dear Buzz...

As far as a donation to James goes, you can donate online to him - just go
to the website: http://www.felineleukemia.org/
and on the bottom of the Menu box is a link to the "Donate to Our Cause"
page. If you pay by check, you can add a note saying it's "In Memory of
Buzz". I'm not sure if there is a comments section for paypal, but you
can always send him a separate note anyway...

Re: [Felvtalk] OT: Kitty box with a lip to catch urine???

2009-06-29 Thread Kat
Hi Wendy,

They do make a top-opening litter box:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/images/B0002ZS20I/ref=dp_image_0?ie=UTF8&n=284507&s=kitchen

But maybe Pepper is objecting to the texture of the litter on her paws?
Have you tried using different litter - or even an empty litter box?

Also, if nothing else works, you could get some of the doggy "pee pads" to
put under the box - that way the urine gets absorbed by the pads & makes
clean-up much easier.

Good Luck!

And it looks like a) it's in Long beach California,
b) it's listed as a dog vet and c) I don't think the

Re: Need immediate thoughts for Satch and Beatrix

2006-10-16 Thread Kat
Oh Leslie,

How awful!! It's good that your boyfriend
called 911. In the mean time (since I know you're not going to be in any
shape to study)...
First - Notify any and all shelters and vets and animal control in your
area & let them know both your cats names, colors, sizes, sexes, and the
fact that they are microchipped.
Second - Get your boyfriend's dog out & go walking in the direction that
the car went and where your bookbag was found. Let him guide you as you
walk - the kitties love him, so may be more apt to come out for him.
Third - put up posters everywhere with pictures and a contact number (you
can do this while you're out walking with your boyfriend's dog)
Fourth - contact your local paper & TV station, see if they can help get
pictures out - the more people looking, the better

Please keep us posted!!

Re: What I learned

2006-10-18 Thread Kat
Hi Leslie,

You can (sort of) microchip your car - it's called LoJack.
http://www.lojack.com/
And even tho I have a cut-off switch on my car, I also have the LoJack
installed. If the car ever gets stolen, you call the cops with your
personal "ID" (which should be kept in a safe place in your house). The
cops then activate the small radio frequency transceiver hidden in the car
and have their own equipment to "listen" for your car.

I'm s glad both of your kitties are back with you, and I hope your
midterms go well too.

Hi Hideyo,

Athena and Artemis are doing great. They are about 1 1/2 years old now
and you'd swear Athena can see just as well as her sister - she gets into
just as much mischief as Artemis does. They are so cute. I haven't mixed
them with the rest of the household, so they get to hang out in my study
and sun themselves in the south facing window while I'm at work. My
digital camera gave up the ghost last year and I'm leaving hints with my
boyfriend for a new one this Christmas (so I can update their pics!)

Re: o/t ideas please for my ex-foster cat

2006-10-26 Thread Kat
Kerry,

It's so hard when they get off to a wrong start...
Basically, you have to go back to square one and start all over.
Keeping them in seperate rooms, swapping their bedding each day,
swapping their rooms every 4-5 days, using cooking vanilla dabbed
on each one (both the head and the tail) to make them smell the same,
and using the appropriate flower essences in each one's water (in
addition to continuing with the Feliway). But this will take time.
Do you think "Molly" will be open to this or does she think it's too
late to start over?

Here's hoping she's willing to give it another try.

Please keep on keeping-on, you're doing a wonderful thing

Re: To Kat: Oregon Grape...

2006-10-26 Thread Kat
Hi Ioana,

Oregon Grape (Mahonia nervosa) --
I have heard of some cases of aggression being helped by this. It is
useful for fears as a result of being paranoid or having some mistrust of
others. It may enable your animal to again begin to trust and feel more
comfortable with others. Releases the habit of valuing yourself
in relationship to others. Encourages knowing your true vital unique
nature. Looking outside to others, instead of valuing yourself for who you
uniquely are. Giving away your power to others. Codependence. This may
encourage the physical body to hold onto toxins that lead to liver,
gallbladder, skin or eyes diseases. For social paranoia, misunderstanding
of the behavior of others, the imagining or expectation of hostility from
others; promotes trust and the expectation of good will.

If you google it you should come up with quite a few sites.

I like Green Hope Farms, but they may not have this particular flower
essence, I haven't looked in a while.
