[Finale] rehearsal letters not showing

2011-11-13 Thread Haroldo Mauro Jr
On a finished score, I added two new parts: flute and tenor sax. The linked
parts created for these instruments do not show rehearsal letters, as all the
others do. I tried unlink and then relink to parts one of the letters (text
expression) in the score. No use. Any suggestions? Thank you.

Double-check the score list for the category that the rehearsal marks

[Finale] Transposing chords in percussion part.

2011-09-26 Thread Haroldo Mauro Jr
The percussion player asked me to write the chord changes on her part. OK, I
thought that would be very easy to do. I opened the score, copied all chord
changes from the bass part and pasted into the percussion part. Every thing

[Finale] Disappearing hyphens

2011-09-10 Thread Haroldo Mauro Jr .
This is Finale 2011 for Mac. All hyphens have vanished from the lyrics on my
score and soprano part. They are still there, in the lyrics window, but not in
the music, where spaces were substituted for them. They don't print either.
What is that? It is amazing how many hours I have spent on Finale trying to
figure out what is going on. Things just don't behave as expected. Trying to
synchronize expression and repeat texts between score and parts is so time
consuming that I just print parts without them and add them by pencil later.
That's a lot faster. Has this happen with anyone before, I mean the vanishing
hyphens? Thanks.

 Hi Haroldo --

This sort of thing has happened to me before, though I don't remember if it
was all hyphens or just specific ones. Usually when it happens to me it's
an issue with the minimum space setting for Smart Hyphens in the Lyrics

it to a very small number, the missing hyphens reappear.

 Hope this helps!

[Finale] unwanted key change

2011-06-04 Thread Haroldo Mauro Jr .
In the top staff of a piano part of a score for three instruments, there is a
key signature change from Bb minor to C minor that lasts 6 measures only. The
change occurs only in the upper staff of the piano staff group. Other
instruments are not affected. I have no idea why this is so and I can't change

transposition box in the staff attributes window for the piano staff is
unchecked. This is an old score I just picked up to work on. It was originally

You don't specify your version of Finale, but since WINFin 2k, there have been
two plug-ins, notes and rests (show) and notes and rests (hide) which show
or hide notes in a region designated by the mass mover tool (and I suspect in

Re: [Finale] Hours of work lost -

2010-05-08 Thread Haroldo Mauro Jr .
Yes, I just started doing incremental back-ups, but while I'm working on the
score, and sometimes I spend hours without quitting Finale. That is not as good
as your method, because if the file I'm working on gets corrupted but stays
open, allowing me to edit it, all the saved copies from then on would be just
as corrupted, even with their different names. What I'll do then is to quit
Finale more often, every twenty minutes to half an hour, and do the incremental
saving at the beginning of esch session, as you do. Thanks.

I don't have much to offer by way of help in recovering the hours of work you
lost, bug for future use, if you don't already, you might consider adopting
the practice of incremental back-ups. When I'm working on a large project, the
first thing I do each time I open the file, is to save the file with a new
name, and on a regular basis, but every time I leave the computer, I save the
file, re-open it, and immediately save with a new name. So, the first save may
be myfile000.mus, the second myfile001.mus, c.

This doesn't prevent problems with corrupted files, but while I've lost work
because of file corruption, and other problems, the amount of time I've lost
is on the order of minutes worth, not hours.

Okay, that's one theory shot!

I read after I commented that you use the excellent incremental filename
backup system (filename001, filename002, etc.) but as you noticed, this only
protects you as often as you use it. If you only save each day under a new
name, then you stand to lose up to a day's work. I change the filename almost
every time I save, which might be every ten or fifteen minutes, and my .bak
files and my .asv files provide additional protection. Once the project is
done, I delete most of the extra files, but they are there helping security
during the working phase.

Christopher

Well, yes, I'm doing just that. I'm up to myFile14 after a couple of hours of
work! And I've quit 14 times and started again from the most recent saved copy,
save as myFile(+1) and work on it. Later I'll trash the older ones, as you
do.

I too, save my work that often or more, but if the file is already corrupted,
and you don't know, you'd go for hours saving corrupted back-ups. I'm quiting

[Finale] Hours of work lost -

This is the third score I've lost. I spent hours of work on this one, and when
tried to open it I got this message:

While attempting to open file [fileName] the File Manager reported an error.

Is there any way of getting it back? I have the autosave on, but the
file.asv.mus is gone, just the same, and another copy I made with the save as
command is gone too.

Macbook, Finale 2009

I think this, as well as the others were originally 2008 files saved as 2009,
erased and started anew.

Any hope here?

One thing which often causes unintended results such as this is if you have
used expressions which you created by duplicating existing ones and then
edited so they're different. If the original expression which was duplicated
had been defined for playback and that playback definition was for a patch
change to trumpet, that might explain things. Check any expressions you might
have placed at the start of only the two staves in question.

Thank you. That was not the case, but it is good to know. I'll keep that in

Subject: [Finale] OT Lassus font and Mac OS X

I am no longer able to get some of Lassus characters on a Macbook, which I
used to get on a G3.

eg.
opt+shift with 1, 2 or 6 would give me flat signs on a G3, OS 9. On the
Macbook (Leopard) I get regular characters, like Î, °Ë and ©’. And when I
type any of those characters (eg. opt+shift + 2)on a Word document (haven't
checked other text editors) the font menu changes from Lassus to the previous
selected regular font, such as Times, Verdana, etc.

Any ideas? I would think this has to do with the OS. This problem has been
around since I switched to OS X. Is there a newer version of Lassus, or font
similar to it, that would work with Leopard? Thanks.

I tried using Lassus with several text editors and found out it works fine with
AppleWorks 6 and BBEdit Lite X; and the problem I described earlier occurs
with Word 2004, TextEdit and TextWrangler.

There is no update that I know of. Do you? Thanks.

Perhaps not as totally easy as moving to a different key on the keyboard, but
almost as easy -- simply move to the cursor key and push up or down before

To answer your question: Yes, C MI 6 with the 6th in the bass is A MI7 (b5).

They are not the same. A-7(b5) dictates Locrian. C-6 forces you to avoid
7th to voice, meaning the 7th will be b7th or natural 7th which will be a
choice for the improviser.

Again, most important thing here is that 6 chord by definition tells you not
to voice the 7th.

Knowing of course that your expertise in these matters far exceeds mine, how
exactly does any chord designation force anything on an improviser? And how
does A-locrian differ from C-dorian (which I would expect to be played over
Cmin(maj6)) other than in the starting note? Suggest, certainly, but force?

I agree with you that there is no difference. I also do not use the chord
scale theory as a basis for improvisation nor in my playing neither in my
teaching, simply because I think good melodies are made of chord tones plus
non-harmonic tones, and those can be either diatonic or cromatic ones. Not all
notes of a melody need to be from the chord scale. Also, there is no time in
improvisation, specialy when chords change fast, to play a full scale for each
chord; and picking up scale tones at random won't work either in building a
good melody.

Avoiding the 7th in voicing the chord, leaving the choice of b7 or natural7 to
the improviser, how would that differ between the two chord designations?
Would someone really add a Bb or a Bnat to the A-7(b5)? I guess they could
add the 9th pretty easily, but so, too, could they add the Bb or Bnat in a
Cmin(maj6)/A designation, couldn't they, since the A would be in the bass and
thus farther away from where the Bb/Bnat would be voiced?

This is what I think. Considering you have a Cm6 chord, you can choose either
one of the 7ths in a melody. For instance if you play a descendig scalewise
group of notes from D to A the Bb sounds good; and if you play a rising group
from, say, C to Eb, the B natural will sound good also.

As for the chord, you never use a b7 in a min6 chord, but you could add a
Maj7th if the melody permits. For instance, if the melody is the root, you
don't use the Maj7th, but if the melody is the 9th, the added Maj7h would soung
good as in the chord C, A, Eb, G, B (rising from C) and a D in the melody.

If you say that good melody notes can be diatonic or chromatic ones, then you
use chord scale theory. Chord scale theory only tells us which notes are more
likely to be considered as diatonic rather than chromatic and gives us an
easy way to practice them. After a while, we just know them and don't worry

Unless I'm mistaken, chord scale theory says if you are in Cmaj you use C major
scale for CMaj7, dorian mode for Dm7 phrygian for Em7, lydian for FMaj7, etc.
What I say that all diatonic non-harmonic tones for all those chords come from
the C major scale. You build your improvisation with chord tones from those
chords plus passing tones, neighbooring tones, scale runs, whatever... from the
C major sale only, or cromatic notes. To say that the phrygian mode gives me

Harold

I don't know about redundant, but it gets a lot more useful when talking
about the kinds of chords we were discussing. What scale is considered to be
diatonic on an Fm chord in the key of C major? F melodic minor is a good
one, but there are cases to be made for F dorian, C harmonic minor (starting
from F, of course, if we are talking about chord scales) and that weird scale
I don't know the name for, like an F lydian but with A flat.

On Bb7 in Cmajor it is a split between using a passing E or passing Eb, and
chord scale theory helps up with these less-obvious choices (it depends on
context.)

We were particularly talking about m7(b5) chords, which on a II chord in minor
work nicely with locrian, but as a VI chord in minor or as a II chord in MAJOR
might be better with locrian maj2.

Christopher

Sorry, on your original example again, it depends on context. E phrygian on
Em7 might seem obvious in the key of C, but what about bar 3 of Satin Doll? E
Dorian is a perfectly playable scale there, on that chord, and we aren't even
into Freddie Hubbard territory yet. I still think there is a lot of chord
scale theory that can help us.
___

Fm in C major:
Diatonic notes are from C minor scale from which it is borrowed, except if it
has a maj7, as in FmMaj7, but then it is obvious you need to substitute E for
Eb, making it an F melodic minor, up and down. If there is no mention of 7th in
the symbol, you may use either scale in improvisation, since you can imply
wathever 7th you want added to the chord, because there is no other melody
going on.

Em7 in Satin Doll
You might have a point there. But you still can use F natural in the second
Em7, as it goes to Dm7 via its secondary dominant. Also, one usually adds a 9th
to the Em7 chord and a 13th to the A7, and that puts you momentarily in the D
major region (IIm7-V7 of D), and thus your E dorian scale.

My question: how does one know, from the chord scale theory, that the scale to
use in the Em7 chord of Satin Doll is the dorian? How does the theory tell you
that, except by showing you that for the moment you are in the D major
territoty?

My point is, if you know what tonal region you are, you can easily figure out
what notes are diatonic, and don't need chord scale theory.

If it is a major triad with an added major 6th, yes: C6/A is the same as Am7.
But you're talking about a minor 6th. Then, if it is a minor triad with an
added minor 6th it becomes a major 7th chord: Cm(b6)/Ab is the same as AbMaj7.
And if it the triad is major and the 6th minor, then you get an Ab augmented
triad plus a major 7th, notated as AbMaj7(#5).

In chord changes writing, to write a Cm(b6)/Ab is nonsense.

Thanks Michael. I too, keep the original files in older versions, but I did a

time I'll start with a default file. It seems I'll be assuming a risk every

Well. I certainly get the feeling that they actually fix things, whereas it

ones seem to get fixed with the next payed upgrade, the rest never gets fixed
at all.

A bug like this I simply expect to be fixed immediately. Ie within weeks
rather than months.

I payed for the Finale 2k9 update only a few months ago. Lately I have not
used Finale much, and I have only used 2k9 perhaps five times for very small
jobs. Do I now have to get 2k10 to get this fixed? If that is the case
Sibelius is becoming a very likely option. I am certainly not going to feed
the folks at MM for their ridiculous bugs.

Johannes

I felt the same way when I complained to MakeMusic about some FinMac 2008 bugs,
and they told me there would be no more updates to 2008, but the bugs were
fixed in 2009. I then requested 2009 for free, but my request was denied. How
would you feel if you took a defective brand new laptop to the shop for repair
and they told you they would not fix it, but you could buy the new model, which
is not defective, for a fraction of the price? So I bought the Sibelius
crossgrade for $99.

Hi,
In this document, containing 3 staves, I have named staves 1 and 2 Flute

I opened the Staff Atributes dialog, clicked the edit button for Full

staves as following: b for staff 2 and c for the third staff. THe result

If I open the editing fields to rename staves 1 and 2 I see a and b

Re: [Finale] staff name doesn't change

2009-05-01 Thread Haroldo Mauro Jr .
Thanks, Noel.
That was indeed my first guess, that is, having named them by means other than
the staff attributes dialog. But no, the square boxes next to the names appear
only when the Staff Tool is selected. I also double clicked the word flute
with the selection tool to make sure, and that activated the Staff Tool,
presenting, as expected, the tiny square boxes next to the three staff names.
However, selecting the top flute text by clicking on the square, selects it
plus staff 2 flute text (as if I shift-clicked the latter), and vice-versa.
If I drag one the other moves together.

I opened the text block editing dialog box (thanks, I had never done so before)
No occurrences of both flute and letters a or b in one text block. I found the
word flute, alone and only once, at the beginning; as for a, b, and c,
these were the last three.

You can enter as many chords as you want on the same note. After you enter the
first chord, F, choose Manual Input from the Chord menu. Then click on the
note that is on the first beat again. Th Chord Definition dialog opens. Enter
the chord you want , click OK, and the new chord will appear above the first
one. Then place it wherever you want by dragging. If you want a third chord, a
fourth, fifth... just repeat the process. All chords will be connected with the
same whole note. However, when playing back you'll hear all chords played at
once.

Thanks for answering. I did that. Doesn't help. This is what is happening:

I have a single staff part written in FinMac 2003. The instrument is the double
bass.
I open it, in page view, whether with Finale 2003 or 2008, doesn't matter, and
I see the bass staff with all the music.
Still in page view, I add a new staff.
The new staff does not show (still in page view). Only the original bass staff
shows, as if I had not added a new staff.
I switch to scroll view and I can see both staves now. The bass and the newly
created one.
Swith back to page view - I see only the bass staff.
Back to scroll view, I delete the bass staff - now I see only the new staff in
scroll view. The bass staff is gone, as expected.
Back to Page view - I see a blank page!

The file is here if anyone wants to check:

http://hmauro.com/finale

It's the only file in the directory. Try adding a new staff to it.
Thank you.

actually there, just displaying somewhere completely off the page.

I reset the system margins and now I have several systems per page, which
shouldn't be, since there are six staves per system. Still no music, just the
dotted lines and small boxes. Here are the measurements for all systems,
exept the top margin of system one, in inches:

Top: 0,37153; left: 0,04861; right: 0,04861; bottom: 0,78125
Distance between systems: 0.3

I don't know what causes this, but I can resolve it with the Staff List
Manager in TGTools. Check both staves in the first system and copy it to all
following systems. (Check the unchecked tick box and vice versa.)

I don't quite follow. You said I should check both staves in the first system,
but I only see one staff in every system, and there is no Staff List Manager in

I agree with you. I copied the music and pasted into a new file. I found out
the other two 2003 files in the same folder as this one, have the same
problem!!! And some other weird stuff happened. I couldn't delete a couple of
notes entered accidentaly in speedy entry. The notes appeared only when leaving
the measure being edited. When I clicked the measure (speedy entry) to delete
them, they disappeared. They didn't show in any of the four layers. And since I
could't delete the notes, I tried to clear the measure. The notes remained,
even though everything else vanished. Then I tried deleting the measure. No
use... Really strange. I will not use ths file, but I might get TGTools just
to see it fixed anyway.
Thank you.

[Finale] music disappeared from page view

2009-04-01 Thread Haroldo Mauro Jr .
I opened a one-staff bass part Finale file; added staves for four more
instruments, including a piano two-staff group; switched from page view to
scroll view and rearranged the positioning of the staves, i.e. moved the bass
part from top to bottom, etc. Then, when I switched back to page view, there
was no staves, no music at all. Only the title and metronome mark. What
happened? In scroll view the music looks fine, like any other document.

Updating layout may do the trick; if not, select the staff tool, and check the
options under staff usage, and respace staves. Third possibility is
perhaps the page layout; might the system be so large that it won't fit on the
first page, and the music you anticipate seeing on the first page has been
shoved back to the second. In this case, adjusting system margins will be the
answer.

ns

Respace staves did nothing. The score is 33 pages long. I can move through all
pages, all blank. With the Page Layout tool I can see the dotted lines
indicating the systems. There is one system per page, but no music!!! I see
music only in scroll or studio view.

[Finale] note heads

Years ago I wrote some examples in Finale, for my students. In some of them I
removed the stems on quarter and half notes, leaving only the note heads. I
opened one of these files yesterday to save as something else and tried to put
the stems back, but could not. I don't remember how I removed them. I thought I
should try the Special Tools box. When I choose the toll that makes the stem
longer or shorter, two square boxes appear next to the note heads. I figured
that if I dragged them up or down, the stem would reappear, but no, they
didn't. Please help. FinMac 2008

You don't say what version of Finale you first created the file in, so
terminology may vary. I suspect that you removed the stems by using an
option accessed in some versions as document options Music options.
This dialog box has three labeled input boxes where you can set the
stem length, shortened stem length, and half stem length. Setting
all three to 0 [zero] is the quickest way to get stemless notes
globally. The next option that comes to my mind is that you used the
custom stem tool. (the special tool that looks like a snowflake). The
recommended way to achieve a few stemless notes (at least when I learned
how to do it) was to use the custom stem tool, and apply an empty stem.

the whole measure gets highlighted.

[Finale] Default document

Does the Finale Help File (FinMac, 2008) tells in what folder a default

I have that same issue in Finale 2008 for Mac. I wrote to MakeMusic support
about it and the answer was that issue has been fixed in Finale 2009. So I
told them they should give me version 2009 free of charge, since I paid about
US$125 for v.2008 and it is deffective. My request was denied, of course. It
didn't surprise me.

Now it turns out they didn't even fix the bug, after all! They lied to me. I am
really angry about that. I am glad I didn't upgrade, and I won't. At least for
a long time.

I'm a Finale user since 1990 (v.2.5), but I am seriously considering changing
to Sibelius. I did buy the $99 crossgrade. If it works for me I'll do the
switch, never to spend my money on buggy Finale again.

2008-09-08 Thread Haroldo Mauro Jr.
Martin, assuming you still have you Finale 2003 default file, do the following:

1. Open your 2003 default file with Finale 2008 and save it as
my2008DefaultFile inside the folder Component Files, which is inside your
Finale 2008 folder.

2. go to menu Finale 2008PreferencesProgram Options...
3. Click New -- it's the first item in the list at the left
4. Type my2008DefaultFile inside field Default Document

From now on my2008DefaultFile will be your default file, and you can edit it
