2019-09-27 Thread Williams, Jim
OK...here we go.
The first 10 times I tried to print to the 5000 out of WinFin26, it crashed
without even choosing the 5000.
The 11th time was a charm, and now it's working 100% fine.
Go figure.

Hello, all...
*Latest Finale 26
*Latest Windows 10

I have a few printers to choose from:
One is an old LaserJet 8150 that I have networked at 192.168.1.48. Everything
works perfectly with WinFin 26--duplex, 11x17 paper, 1200dpi, etc.
Today I set up an old LaserJet 5000 to network on 192.168.1.20. Parallel print
server identical to the one on the 8150. Went to print a document in WinFin
26--CRASH. Wouldn't even let me select the 5000.

*EVERY other program I have that prints, music or otherwise, works FINE with
the 5000 on 192.168.1.20. Finale 26 is the ONLY program that refuses to print
to the 5000...can't even select it.

*Finale 26 works FINE with every other printer I have, network or USB.

Yes, I have restarted everything...Finale, computer, printer itself, my
euphonium, etc.
Looked at the FINALE.INI and didn't recognize anything related to printers.

Advice, anybody???

[Finale] Misbehaving Slurs

2018-12-26 Thread Williams, Jim
Hi...
Fin 26 on Windows 10, latest version of each.
Score for wind ensemble.
In the parts I needed to flip any number of slurs.
I save, end my session, and return to the project later.
All the slurs I flipped in the parts have returned to their original undesired
position.
What am I missing to make those slurs stay put?
Also—what do the two “over system breaks” settings do in the contextual
dropdown menu for slurs?
Thanks.

Re: [Finale] Cannot create some multi measure rests in parts

2018-11-06 Thread Williams, Jim
Ray,
Please try this:
1. Open the problematic part and determine which layer the rests are in.
2. Apply a staff style BLANK NOTATION WITH RESTS to the PART ONLY. Apply it to
the layer containing the problematic rests ONLY.
3. Try to create the MM Rest.
This works 100% of the time when I do voiced linked parts with voice 1 playing
and voice 2 resting & vice-versa.

There must be a more pleasing way of recording.
Help Please.

Choose Window > ScoreManager and click the staff you want to change.
Choose Transposition > Other. The Staff Transpositions dialog box

appears.
Specify the desired transposition.

Only certain individual staves ( for me ) have them, so applying them last,
before Generating Parts is what I've found that works.
Otherwise, they may not be there.

I pull a medley together every holiday season for a show - Importing different

Wow-didn't think this would elicit so many replies

I had the original MusicPrinter on my apple
][e and][e, then moved to Laser Music Processor (anyone else use that one???)
and MusicPrinter Plus on my PCs circa 1987(?).
I also had a utility called Laser Twin that (allegedly) made 9-pin dot-matrix
printer output resemble a laser printer. Sorta. It did so by overtyping six or
seven times. Sometimes it put holes in the paper from all the overtyping, as I
recall.

Tuba trills: f# to g# in the staff would be fingered:
2/3 to 1 on a BBb. A bit awkward.Alternate fingering would be quite out of tune
2 to 2/3 on a CC Tuba. Easy.
2 to 1 on an Eb tuba. Easy. Sorry, but other poster was not correct.
1/2 to 2 on an F tuba. Easy.
I have avoided any options of 5th or 6th valves, as the setups are quite varied.

Re: [Finale] Lyrics entry [was: Re: Part prints at 1/16 size of page]

2015-08-07 Thread Jim Gray
On Macs in the Finale lyric tool, while typing directly into the score, if the
shift key is held while the space bar is pressed, the curser is sent backwards.
My suspicions are that Mr. Parmerlee, while having to press the shift key to
create the capital I, may inadvertently still have the shift key pressed when
he hits the space bar. I know it has happened to me a few times, forcing me to
consider my typing coordination skills, which are already pretty low.

 Are you using a Mac?

Because I just ran a test on the Windows version of Finale2014:
 1) Started a brand new document, using the default template
 2) entered two measures: 4 quarter notes and a whole note in 4/4 time
 3) entered directly into the score: Some-one should I call (they didn't
need to make sense, just had to include several syllables before the
word I which you say is a problem) -- there was no jumping of the
cursor. The word I stayed right where I entered it.
 4) opened the Lyrics window and created verse 2 with the words What
 should I do now?
 5) click-assigned verse 2 beneath my directly entered lyrics -- again,
there was no problem at all.
 6) went back into verse 1 and highlighted the word call and typed I
and again there was no problem.

So if you're on Mac, it's a Mac issue. If you're on Windows, it's not a
problem with Finale but rather with whatever file or files you've tried
to use the word I in the lyrics tool.

Once you get your list of bugs typed, you should post it here before
submitting it to Finale so that we can all test them to see if they
really are bugs or are somehow only bugs on your system or when using
 your templates.

If my memory doesn't fail, the problem is somehow connected to printing when an

If you are going to mass-print, you might consider turning off auto-save,

Re: [Finale] orchestra show of power? or justified deadline?

2015-06-03 Thread Jim Gray
Hi Jef,

I would think this is a reasonable request to get the string parts to the
concertmaster and principles before their vacation starts for bowings and part
assignments (for wind played and percussionists, etc.). I have had to deal with
this for shows that are early in the season, so that the principles could truly
enjoy their vacation without any work load.

This is just my opinion and experience though, since I don’t know about your
exact situation. Has the librarian or admin. staff offered any explanation?

Perhaps they were inherited by starting with a copy of another score
rather then setting up a fresh score from scratch each time.

For me it is no big deal. I simply wipe out the locks and then put in
my new locks. I have locks on nearly every system because:

 * I pay careful attention to page turns,

 * I try to put signs at the beginning of lines and to coda at the
 ends
 of lines

 * When possible, I avoid splitting musical lines across systems

These things all lead to more accurate reading. By taking an extra 10
minutes on the layout, I can save 20 minutes in rehearsal and have
 fewer
 errors in performance.

[Finale] In finale 2012, maybe driven internal sounds quit working after computer falls asleep.

2014-10-27 Thread Jim Fischer
It seems I enter data with my midi keyboard attached and it's driving the
internal sounds. After the computer is asleep for a while and I come back to
work again the keyboard will make notes appear in hyperscribe but the sound
audio instrument is no longer driven. Anybody else experiencing this?
My fix has been to quit finale and restart finale.

Re: [Finale] Very, very old files

2014-08-27 Thread Williams, Jim
I have had some difficulty bringing older files into 2014, but nothing totally
insurmountable. I think repeats and a few other things didn't work. I'll try
the 2012 to XML see how it works. I'm in the process (finally) of giving all
my work the same look, so any time saver is welcome.

I'm posting this again, abridged. The complete version is a week or
two back with the same subject. I have two or three fine gentlemen
across our great nation helping me but I don't want to ask too much of
 them or extend my welcome.

 Hi listers,

As many of you know I had a stroke at age 60 last October, and
followed that up with a bad fall on stairs in Feb
which injured the base of my spine. I can only sit for a few minutes
at a time without taking addictive
pain-killers. I have worked at my seated location for years, and
gotten pretty good fin chops (though now I have to learn 2014
 quickly).

Plus, as I have mentioned in the last few days, I have had
major-league computer issues with my super-wiz-bang HP Windows 8
machine. I am slowly typing this on my laptop, standing, but my
Finale chops on it are dismal.

Meanwhile, I am in the middle of a deadline, I simply must get this
work done -choir needs most of it's music very soon.

My point is that I could really use some help! When I was healthy, I
enjoyed nothing more than sitting and making quick arrangements in
Finale - did them all the time for others, even strangers on the
interwebs, and I am thinking there are users like me out there who are
still healthy and wouldn't mind taking a few minutes now and then to
pound out a file or two for me. Yes?

I will list some things in this message, and will add more in the
coming weeks. The project is called Searching For America and tells
the story of K.L. Bates writing America the Beautiful in 1893 - for
singer actors, chorus, and chamber orch (strings, 2 fls, 2 trpts, 3
perc.). I am making big-time use of folk songs and other existing
material, such as old sheet-music of obscure tunes that don't have
midi files anywhere. I'm also borrowing some from earlier works of
mine already Finale-yzed. Anyone who helps will get a credit line in
the final presentation - even put a short ad if you'd like!

My plan is to give mostly straight-forward arrangements to the choir,
and contribute more originality to the instrumental and
narration portions before the premiere in November. No money to offer
 - I am getting a little for the finished product, but not enough.

Any type Fin file will do:

 1. Type out this song:
 http://www.loc.gov/item/sm1871.02334/
[I had a volunteer for this, but haven't received anything. NOT
 complaining, just anxious!]

My wife has already typed the words to the latter - I'll include that
 in my next email.

 2. same for some pdfs I can attach to private emails. simple stuff.
[Several of these have been done, but I have some more.]

 3. A fin file, as simply scored as possible, of the Sousa arrangement
of The Star-Spangled Banner - midi files may be around for that. [I
found another version in midi I could use, but I'd love the Sousa. I
don't have music, but it's prob on one of the free band music sites
somewhere. I believe it's also known as the Marine Band version. If
you have music, please let me know.]

A message with I'll do 1 or whatever to the list will help avoid dupes.

More later! Thanks for any help!

The only problem I had after the Mavericks upgrade was printing 2 sides up on
12x18 landscape. Seems to be a compatibility problem with Mavericks and HP.
The only way I can make it work is to save as a PDF and configure each PDF part

Re: [Finale] Laser Jet 5000 and Finale--Various OSes

2014-07-16 Thread Williams, Jim
I don't know if this is relevant for Mac users, but with Windows 8, I was
having problems with my LaserJet 5000 UNTIL I changed the print processor to
WINPRINT instead of the HP print processor.
There must be some Mac equivalent, I'd think. On Win 8, I went into the
printers area, called up the 5000's properties, and changed the print processor.
I have NO idea what that menu looks like on a Mac, or how to access it, but you
Macsters do know, so it might be worth messing with to see if you can get
everything out of the 5000 that it has to offer.
The change in OS from Win 7 to Win 8 hosed my 5000 until I discovered that fix,
and almost every subsequent update to Win 8 has hosed it as well, and I've
had to reset it every time.
Hope this helps Win 8 users; perhaps you Macsters can benefit from my
experience as well.

Re: [Finale] Upgrading to Finale Mac 2014

2014-07-16 Thread Jim Gray
Scott,

What size paper are you printing on? I can print on 8½ x 11 11 x 17 both
landscape and portrait, and 9 x 12 portrait with no problem. But when I try to
print on 12 x 18 landscape I am not able. As I have researched this it seems to
apply across the board outside of Finale. I noticed a few complaints from
architects trying to print oversized blueprints on 12 x 18.

I use an HP 5500.

I went back to my live score and saved it in XML format. I closed
Finale, then restarted it and imported the XML. This forced all the
instruments to be assigned to new MIDI channels starting from bank 1,
channel 1. I figured that would clear up the problem as there wouldn't
be residue remaining from my MUSX file. But this still has exactly the

The problem I am having is that when I am in scroll view using a staff

This template has so many instruments that it does go into three banks

Is anybody successfully using Win 8.1 with Finale 2014B?

I upgraded my music system about 10 days ago. Most of my time on the
system has been with a DAW. I have had all the usual annoyances getting
a new OS settled in and all the stuff everybody hates about 8.1, but I
had zero application crashes on this new system.

I had installed Finale the first day and gave it a quick checkout and
all seemed OK. Last night I started on a small project I expected to
have done by Thursday. I had a couple of crashes last night. Today it
has crashed 20 times and I clearly am not going to get my project done.
I don't see any pattern other than it is always after some keystroke and
mouse click. I mean, it doesn't crash if I am just staring at it.
Other than that, I don't see a pattern. it has crashed on just about
every tool I have used (speedy entry, chords, expressions, all of them.
And it has crashed just hitting the spacebar to playback.

Completely useless at this point.

I changed a lot of hardware in the process of building the new
workstation. I had dual monitors before without a problem. I upgraded
one of those monitors to a big multitouch. I am using the same audio
interface (Presonus Audiobox), but I think I had to upgrade the driver.
I know people have had some problems with the patch. I am thinking at
this point of wiping out Finale and Garritan and reinstalling Finale
with just patch A. Any advice out there?

I want it to show a 7-bar mm rest with the To Coda carefully placed at

Just put the vocal part in another layer. You can copy it in with Show

 at
the right time (if a conductor isn't available or capable), I would like
 to
let the wind players be able to see the vocal part in this section so
 they

the part and together with their own staff.

I havent't tested yet but when thinking about it I can only see one
 obvious
solution and that would be to add an extra staff for each wind player,
 add
this to the respective parts and copy the vocal part to these for this
section. Then use the functionality to only show non-empty staves in the
part (can't remember the name of this feature but I have used it earlier
 in
 some piano parts).

 Perhaps this would do it.

But is there a more clever way? The best would of course be something

Re: [Finale] Garritan Sale

2013-12-03 Thread Williams, Jim
Part of this situation may well involve Human Playback. It still is NOT clear
to me that HP interprets dynamics correctly/wisely. It seems to use a
combination of CC7 volume and CC1 modwheel. Under that circumstance, the tone
of winds and brass will not change as much as it would if CC1 dominated the
dynamics.

The tradeoff with Garritan samples is cost, integration with Finale, and
library size versus expressive capability.
To that end, the samples were designed such that velocity controlled attack for
winds and brass instead of having various attack samples, and CC1 controlled
volume AND added brightness via filter as dynamics increased (instead of using
multi-velocity-layer samples). The samples were also offered dry, in order to
allow users to control the sound environment.

Of course, ANY sample library will sound bad out of the box. Having said that,
I will also express an opinion that MM has done a very poor job of integrating
Garriten instruments into the operation of Finale. Furthermore, HP remains a
black box with limited customization, and the MIDI Tool--the ideal place to do
tweaking--has remained unchanged since I first bought Finale 2.0 in 1989 or so.
Configuration files and essential XML files are strewn about a user's hard
drive instead of having a central location, and simple typos in XML files
prohibit users from loading instruments properly.

When MM acquired Garritan's IP, I hoped for seamless integration into Finale.
If anything, it's gotten worse instead of better.

I agree 100% with what Chuck said. Without tweaking, it is pretty lame.
I struggle with the volume levels. I really have to work to get
anything heard in the mix. Spreading out the stereo field helps a lot.
Adjusting the way Finale interprets articulations, especially the
marcato mark, helps, but not nearly as much as I had hoped.

In other instrument libraries, you hear a real difference in timbre from
the low velocities to the high velocities. For example, really
hammering on a piano doesn't sound anything like delicate playing. The
winds have the same degree of variation -- if not a lot more -- and none
of that seems to come through with the Garritan sounds. It is
particularly frustrating with a shout chorus that is common in big
band charts. In those sections, you expect the winds (especially the
brass) to really sizzle, but you will probably not achieve anything like
that effect with the JABB library.

I don't know that there is a better solution out there. Maybe
technology just hasn't progressed enough yet. It does seem to have
progressed (in other libraries) with pianos, guitars, basses, drum kits,
and strings.

Nonetheless, I agree that it is worth $75. It is going to be better
than MIDI playback without any tweaking.

On 12/3/2013 1:03 AM, Chuck Israels wrote:
The JABB sounds are better but not great. Piano, bass, drums, guitar and

shaping of those sounds in the jazz style that it is probably too much to
expect to think that static samples would be satisfactory. All in all, the
sounds are helpful to me. I have learned to estimate pretty well what a good
band will sound like from the JABB kazoos, but you have to make some balance
adjustments in the mixer. The trombones are far too loud for the rest of the
sounds. My take is that they are worth $75.

 Hope this helps.

[Finale] LaserJet 5000 and Windows 8

2013-09-24 Thread Williams, Jim
Good morning, everyone...

Is anyone using a LaserJet 5000 with Windows 8? I'm having a host of driver
issues.
I want to print at 1200 DPI out of PCL6 or PS.
The Universal Print Drivers max out evidently at 600 dpi.

The PCL 6 driver I got off Windows Update has a host of problems, including a
setting in the EFFECTS area that automatically resets whatever paper size I
want to letter with no ability for the user to override.

Is there perhaps a driver for a different HP printer that will work with
Windows 8 and let the 5000 do all it can do?

AND: I eventually want to acquire a duplexer for the 5000--anyone have one or
know someone who wants to part with one? Not much online. Maybe I better wait
until I see if Windows 8 will even allow use of the duplexer on the 5000.

Thanks...

Re: [Finale] Garritan band library - Avoiding simultaneous attacks

2013-05-05 Thread Williams, Jim
Craig...
several functions are in play here.

First, as mentioned earlier, HP does some randomization of note-on and -off
times, but I haven't looked at a MIDI file to see how much. Wait until I finish
writing my final exams!!

Unfortunately, making many of these adjustments requires use of Finale's MIDI
tool, which AFAIK has not changed one bit since Finale 2.0, with which I
started in 1989 or so.

As you may know, Finale chops up a quarter note into 1024 parts (EDUs), unlike
any other program. If you go into the MIDI tool, there is a randomize function
for note starts and ends. Apply a few EDUs of randomization if you think HP
doesn't add enough.

BUT:
1. You will have to tell HP to look at this MIDI data and incorporate it into
HP.
2. You must be VERY alert to repeated pitches and make sure they don't overlap,
which can happen frequently. Two same notes, if overlapped, will kill playback
of the second note.

ALSO:
1. If you want certain parts of a piece swung and others straight, you can
always use the APPLY HP plug-in in regions as necessary.
2. If you intend to export MIDI to a DAW, then using the APPLY HP plug-in is a
MUST. Normal HP is NOT saved upon export to MIDI, whereas anything coming from
the plug-in IS saved.
3. If your sections are behaving oddly, make sure that they do not consist of
16ths. If you want swung 16ths, make sure to make the time signature 8/8 but
make it display as 4/4.
4. The random movement of faders you noticed is a function of HP, and evidently
occurs at times even if no particular instruction is on the score.
5. HP seems to use BOTH volume AND velocity to create dynamics. I question that
procedure.
6. It takes some experimentation to find the right level of base channel volume
for a given instrument because every ensemble is unique and necessary base
volume level is a function of the context in which an instrument might appear.
Once you find that proper balance, set it in the Score Manager and use dynamics
in Finale for the rest.
7. HP is not necessarily as smart as we'd like it to be in all occasions, so it
is frequently necessary to mark up a score very heavily to achieve your desired
results...and in some cases, HP seems to impose its intelligence in a
questionable manner and/or at questionable times.
8. The arcane nature of the MIDI tool impedes/prevents a lot of expressivity
that Finale could achieve had any attention been paid to that tool since 1989.
IMHO it is the most user-unfriendly part of Finale since the TCD Watershed Bit
setting disappeared. ;-0 Given that the code seems to be undergoing a major
update/rewrite, perhaps now's the time to really advocate for an improvement in
the MIDI tool.
9. Having said all the above, it's still unclear to me whether putting up with
HP is better or worse than putting up with real trumpet players. ;-)

How do you do that? Is that the setting in HP preferences - Tempo
variations called Don't randomize (exact timing)?

I find that I must keep that box checked on anything that isn't a swing
tune because even when I have swing values set to zero, HP still plays
SOME of the voices swingy. This ruins any Latin tune. I find this
uncontrollable urge while sitting at my computer to look back over my
shoulder and shout at the trumpets Straight eights, dammit!!.
Fortunately the Garritan trumpet section isn't able to retaliate by
screeching right into my ears -- at least they haven't so far. So you
see, that is clear evidence that HP isn't like real trumpet players. :)

Re: [Finale] Garritan question - Big Band brass sounds

2013-05-03 Thread Williams, Jim
Hi Craig...
How's your cimbasso? ;-)

It does take a fair amount of processing to make any sound library work.

What are you doing with respect to panning? That can help greatly. So can
reverb--how are you routing it? Are you using the stereo stage feature of ARIA?
How about EQ?
Also--what are you listening on? Computer speakers or studio monitors, or
something in between?
It is absolutely essential to stagger attack times by a few ticks as well. HP
does that to some extent, but perhaps not enough.

People sometimes set out of the box expectations for sound libraries too
high, which may lead to frustration.

Perhaps if you bring your computer down to Franklin and buy me a couple pints
of Guinness, we can discover some settings you like. ;-)

Some of us either make two scores (one for print one for playback) or enter a
lot of invisible markings on one score.
Take a bit if time to experiment and I'll bet your frustration levels fall.

the other trumpet sounds are better.

The trumpet harmon mute sound is good but I can't get any accents. The
straight mute sound really isn't usable at all. Bucket is mediocre.

Overall, there are basic problems with HP in this setting. The most
annoying one for me is that HP doesn't observe the marcato accent (the
upside down V) correctly. In big band, this will always be an
indication of a sharp punch -- never a long note -- always separation.
But HP plays it as a long note that is hardly separated at all. And I
can't hear any difference between a passage with out slur and with
slur. These aren't little nuances. They are essential qualities of big
band style. I'd say the JABB set is a little better than MIDI playback,
but without hours of tweaking, it is nothing like a realistic sound.

That's the critical view. Now, for the supportive view. Even though it
is nothing like the hype, I personally find it a good enough quality
that it does help me hear things that I would have missed with MIDI
playback -- not just bad notes, but weak viocings and phrasing. I have
made numerous improvements to arrangements that, realistically, I never
would have had time to make if I had to run it by a live band first. So
despite its shortcomings, it is worth the money for me.

 My own mileage varies.

Re: [Finale] Garritan band library

2013-04-24 Thread Williams, Jim
There are a few points I might raise here:
1. Brasses are difficult to sample due to the complex overtones.
2. Homogeneous ensembles such as brass bands create problems as well.
3. The overtone situation Klaus describes can be adjusted via EQ. Go into the
ARIA player and cut or boost frequencies to taste.
4. I find the base velocity in Finale's HP to be too low, yielding mushy
attacks for brasses. Try increasing the base velocity to taste.
5.it is imperative to avoid simultaneous attacks. HP does that to some extent,
but I haven't taken the time to determine how much.
6. Use reverb judiciously, avoiding extremes of wet and dry.
7.try panning similar tone colors on opposite sides of the stereo field if
musically logical
8. Try automating reverb or EQ as a function of an instrument's dynamics or
prominence
9. All the above would be MUCH easier if Finale's MIDI tool were easier to use.
Right now it's a pain.
10. Don't expect anything just using the sounds out of the box
11. Not even the $5K libraries will do a great job of reproducing a brass band.

Re: [Finale] Garritan sound libraries

2013-02-20 Thread Williams, Jim
Hi, Phil...
The two libraries GPO and IO are entirely different.

If you are using Finale, you will likely prefer GPO.

It consists of traditional orchestra sections and solo instruments, so you can
set up a total virtual full orchestra, chamber ensemble, etc.

It's more usable with Finale in terms of What you write is what you hear.

IO consists of sections, pre-defined chords, preset moods, etc, and takes more
work to use with Finale if you want the score to match the sound. It is really
designed for quick-sketching a movie scene or some programmatic music.

I would suggest that you go to YouTube and look for the IO demo series.

If you are doing traditional orchestral music or chamber ensembles, then
Finale + GPO is the way to go.

The Garritan Instruments for Finale is a small sampling of sounds from the
jazz collection, the orchestra collection, and the wind band set, etc. GPO is a
full orchestra and then some--section strings, solo strings, brass, woodwinds,
percussion, keyboards, etc.

Also of interest, depending on what type of music you do, would be the jazz
band set and the concert marching band set.

Re: [Finale] Question on chords

2012-12-26 Thread Williams, Jim
That thing of calling Gm7(b5) a Bbmi6 really misleads beginners because it
hides the 2-5 in minor, and it still exists in a lot of print editions.
Really can mess up a bass line!

I gather that in the young days of complex chord symbols, some arrangers were
still mixing in elements of figured bass, where the notes in a chord took on
the accidental from the KEY they were in, instead of calculated as a fixed
interval above the bass note/root. I've taken note of these to show to my
students, as there is no telling what you might come across in the Wild West
 of chord symbols.

Monk and his peers are well-documented as calling a m5(b5) or
half-diminished chord a minor chord with the sixth in the bass. While it
seems odd to us, it DOES tend to encourage the player to use a certain chord
 scale.

I would definitely edit these to modern (and consistent!) standards, in case
 you were still in doubt.

Re: [Finale] Help - computer is dead!

2012-12-18 Thread Williams, Jim
Ray,
Our family owns two Toshiba laptops. I bought an 875 as an early present to
myself--4 CPUs and 8 gb of ram.
Son has an earlier version (forget the number). Both are well-made workhorses
at reasonable prices at best buy.
On the down side, the hard drive in my new 875 spins at only 5400 rpm, rather
than the recommended 7200 for Garritan work.

I did notice a bit of popping in some finale files that I solved by increasing
latency.

When I get back from the Midwest band clinic, I'm going to attach my ASIO audio
interface, which will solve that issue.

As to video, the 875 has a big screen but I do the dual monitor thing with a
large pivoting screen.

Having said that, the Toshiba screens are big enough to do some good work when
not hooked into the second screen.

Finally, my new 875 came with Windows 8, which I do not like. I seriously
considered wiping the HDD when I got it and installing 7, but thought I'd go
with the flow. It reminds me of my iPad. ;-(

I am now happily working with finale 2012, and every Garritan library all the
way back to the original GPO...

Can't help you there -- I seriously dislike laptops for scoring, and don't use
them for any serious work. I have the big laptop running Linux, so no Finale
there. Laptop screens are too small for scoring work.

My little Dell netbook works great for special purposes and for keeping a
diary when traveling. I actually used the netbook for my opera -- I couldn't
afford to bring in a cimbalom player, so got a customized set of cimbalom
samples from Bolder Sounds and ran it using Finale's Aria player driven from
 an external Kurzweil keyboard.

I do like my customized desktop system with its big monitors and fast hard
drives. (When I'm traveling, I pretty much switch to paper and pencil and
enter the music when I get back home.)

A small note:

The playback of my very complicated scores in FINALE is really terrible in
comparison with the playback I have with Sibelius.

Also, has anyone noted that the ARIA manual is about three versions?

The FINALE score still looks better.

That's probably the expected behavior. Audio apps don't often like to share the

I don't have a crash, but running Finale causes other audio applications to
distort (even if I'm not using any Finale playback). As soon as I shut Finale,
the other applications return to normal.

I can't argue with you on any of the points you mention -- but a few
versions ago Finale restructured its menus and I find many of their
decisions just as unintuitive as any ribbon structure I've seen. For
example, I've never understood why show active layer only was under
the View menu in Finale when it was really most useful while editing
and so my intuition always looked for it under the Edit menu. But I
eventually got used to it, but now it's under the Document menu! Well
practically everything in Finale works on the current Document, so why
didn't they put *everything* under the Document menu? Why take
something that has to do with how someone *views* the music or how
someone *edits* the music and place it in a menu that to my intuition
would most likely be where the page margins and other layout issues
would be placed? And why is Transpose under Utilities instead of
Edit? And why is respell notes under Utilities while Enharmonic
Spelling is under Edit? You don't edit the music with the entry
Enharmonic Spelling -- you tell the program how to interpret things.
So wouldn't that be a Utility or at the least a Preference? While
actually respelling the notes is part of editing the music isn't it?
Why is Save Preferences under File while the actual defining of the
preferences is under the Edit menu? Shouldn't everything that
 pertains to Preferences be together?

I don't expect any answers to my questions because there is no
justification for placing those (and other) menu items where they are in
Finale that I can see. But obviously someone found great justification
for making those decisions. I don't find the Finale menus any less
confusing that the Sibelius ribbon, and ultimately things become
comfortable once we start using them regularly. So I rarely am using
the Find in Ribbon feature of Sibelius these days, but I sure could
use one for Finale, which they very conveniently didn't include. I
would think that would be a utility that everybody who uses new versions
of Finale could benefit from, yet it's not under the Utilities menu
and not under any other menu either.

Ultimately one person's wow, that is so intuitive! is another person's
holy cow, why on earth would they hide that entry under that heading,
 it makes no sense whatsoever?!

One great benefit of Sibelius, which I hope Finale will someday
institute natively, not requiring a plug-in, is the ability of a user to
define their own keyboard shortcuts, so the entire interface practically
can be turned into keyboard shortcuts.

shape parentheses that surrounds the notehead. Then I nudge the smart
shape a pixel or two and leave the part. When I return to the part, the
spacing is gone. I'd use one of Bill Duncan's double parentheses
articulations, (they'd space automatically with note spacing) but they are
too close together to accommodate the accidental on the note. I suppose I
can use separate open and close parentheses articulations, and maybe that's
the best solution, but I'd like to know why the hand spacing disappears.

 Ideas please?

 Thanks,

 Chuck

Re: [Finale] 2012 for $99 Thumbs up or down? Need more input!!!

2012-06-14 Thread Williams, Jim
I'll add my voice to the ones who advise to buy.

As to the score manager, it is a work in process will likely take a few
iterations to get close to perfection.

As we all know, that seems to be a pattern with some major features.

I like 2012 and share in the hope that the promised updater brings pleasant and
needed surprises.

If you've got the money, I would suggest making the upgrade, especially
since the upcoming interim update patch, according to that blog we got a

getting for free what we used to pay for each year.

I'd say you should buy the upgrade.

OK guys, I'd like to ask for your input.

I am a sucker, the kind that has kept Finale afloat. Ever since coming
over to Finale (Windows) from archaic software in 1997, I have upgraded
every year - I think I am pathologically afraid I am going to miss
something. The only upgrade I regretted was 2007 - it had that terrible
print to postage stamp-size bug that only seemed to hit a few unfortunate
 users.

Last summer, as my primary employer (The Louisville Orchestra) was doing
everything it could to not employ musicians for over a year, I skipped
2012. It was difficult for someone as mentally dented as myself, but I did
it and took great comfort in the complaints here about Score Manager, etc.,
and happily went along with 2011. (I even warned my daughter not to
upgrade.) I do have issues with 2011, from time to time, but I realize I
may have to replace my 5-year-old computer at some point and blame it most
 of the time.

We are back on the payroll, now (well, if the first check comes out Friday
as promised) and I could swing the 2012 upgrade, if it is worthwhile. We
have two more days at the $99 price - so what's your verdict? WinFin2012
over 2011 for $99 - yes or no?

 Thanks for your input!

Just curious: Do you use 'stave' for the singular form? It sounds odd to
 me,
even though it's apparently correct. I hadn't heard this singular form
 until
recently, and wondered if it's regional?

It may well be a cross-the-pond difference, as
some seem to think that a choice between bar
and measure is. (I've always used both terms
 interchangeably.)

To me it's always been obvious that a single
staff is a staff, and the plural is staves.
Stave as a singular feels like an incorrect
derivation. But that's just me. I'm also
careful to use medium as the singular of
media; datum as the singular of data; and
timpano as the singular of timpani.

On the other hand, if there are multiple groups of people working for an
organization, they are pluralized to be staffs. Again for the use of
the word staff as a wooden stick, the plural is staffs. So why, if
the singular for a line of music is a staff isn't the plural staffs?

And thinking about the plural for those pieces of wood shaped to form a
barrel, they are called staves and the singular is called stave as
 in a barrel stave.

I think that somewhere long ago in history words got mistranslated out
of the Italian and then misused in different English speaking areas.

Since we're on lexicography, can anybody explain why sharps, flats and
 naturals are called accidentals?

[Finale] Trouble w Finale 2008 crashing upon running program

2012-03-03 Thread Jim Fischer
I used Carbon Copy Cloner to create a new boot disk for my 6 year old
G5 2Ghz Power PC. Using
Finale 2008 on OSX 10.4.

When I run Finale 2008 it starts loading 'items about midi etc. then
just quits.
I read a Makemusic report about removing all audio plug-ins and
restarting to see if it loads.
Haven't tried that !!!

Any Suggestions?

I am working on a show in which five reed players perform on multiple
instruments as is, of course, very common. I have defined my
expressions (e.g., To Alto, To Clarinet) as the appropriate MIDI
patch, but need also to specify transposition, e.g., from E-flat alto
to B-flat clarinet), but cannot accomplish this within the parameters
offered. The manual is singularly unhelpful in this regard.

A temporary solution that I have used is to turn off transposition and
make key signatures independent under staff attributes. The score,
therefore, is correct, but the playback sounds like hell. Playback is
important, though not critical, for me, as I use it mostly for error
detection. In this case, however, I should like to use it to make
 rehearsal tapes for the singers.

Any advice that will be helpful and very much appreciated.

 Cheers,
 Benjamin

Re: [Finale] opening a MIDI file in Finale.

2012-01-03 Thread Williams, Jim
I would be surprised if this were a type 0/type 1 issue, unless the Encore user
specifically chose to export as type 0.
Also--if the others opened well, that's a sign that the one file is problematic.
If nobody has volunteered yet, I'll be happy to look at the file.

Linda, it might be a type 0/type 1 issue.

MIDI files come in two flavours - well actually three, but that's beside
the point - and maybe Finale can deal only with type 0, not with type 1,
MIDI files (the opposite is less common). You can check if this is the
 case by trying a type1-to-type0 converter, or a type0-to-type1.

Are you on Windows? If so, this site has a wealth of such MIDI tools,
 including the ones you need.

The only downside is that these programs are command line utilities, so
there's no point and click interface.

 I hope this helps,

in Encore, and saved as a standard MIDI file. I have managed to open
fifteen of them in Finale and create Finale scores using the MIDI
information, comparing it to a PDF of the Encore printout for accuracy.

Encore is, of course, a horror show, but most of the time I can make these
 work.

The 16th file, created in the same way, refuses to open and gives me an
error message that says Finale cannot open this filetype. I downloaded it
the same way I did the others. Like the others, it has .mid at the end of
the file name, and he PDF of that file is perfect. I've tried opening it
by double clicking, by opening it within the program and every other way
I can think of. I even tried importing it in xml, but nothing works. It
 imported a blank score.

The client reconstituted the MIDI file from the original Encore file, as
he had the others, and they were just fine, opened like a charm. This
one... well, does anyone have any advice? (Just make a new score from the
pdf? he insists that there will be too many errors in translation. But
that may be my last resort.

Thanks for any words of wisdom.
