[Flashcoders] variable with # sign

2008-02-20 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi.
I need to pass a variable to a email sign-up form and it needs to be
named f#31

I have it written:

var f#31 = "TEXT:Email%20Address";

Flash gives me an error when I try to publish this and I assume its
because the variable name has the # sign. How do I get around this?

I've tried escape sequences to no avail.

Thanks!

[Flashcoders] Gaia 2.0 Flash Framework

2008-02-20 Thread Steven Sacks
I wanted to let everyone know about version 2.0 of my Gaia Framework for
Adobe Flash. It's now AS3 and the AS2 version was refactored to follow
strict AS3 standards. Also there is improved Class scaffolding,
exclude.xml scaffolding for AS2, and some really great new features.

http://www.gaiaflashframework.com/forum/index.php?topic=143.0

If you’re developing Flash sites and want to speed up your Flash
workflow with rapid development and don’t want to have to learn a
complicated framework API, give Gaia a test drive. :)

[Flashcoders] [cross-post] Expert contractor needed, green-field project, telecommuting, not a headhunter

2008-02-20 Thread Alan MacDougall
Hello! I am not a headhunter, just a lone programmer whose shop needs
more man-hours than I can generate. I'm posting this to Flashcoders,
Flexcoders, and Flash_Tiger because I know there are more smart
freelancers on these lists than on every craigslist in the world.

My small interactive media company wants to build a fairly ambitious
internal project -- a framework for building product configurators with
potentially complex constraints. We'd be using AS3 and almost certainly
Flex. Unfortunately, I'm the only programmer, and I'm up to my ears in
deadline-intensive work. We hope to hire a contractor (consultant,
freelancer) to collaborate with us on the design and handle 99% of the
implementation.

This is a framework we're going to have to live with for a long time, so
we're eager to get it right. That's why we want to hire someone with
better-than-average design and coding skills. Behold, our ideal contractor:

* At least five years programming experience, and enough AS3/Flex
experience to feel confident. I don't buy the "years of experience
myth," but I do buy the value of _general_ programming experience.
* Experience with, or at least eagerness to use, unit and functional
testing.
* Experience building/populating applications from XML declarations.
(This is a classic Flash thing, so probably goes without saying.)
* Enough object-oriented experience to know how to keep a design from
exploding into a pattern souffle.
* A clear and eloquent coding style. We love descriptive variable names
and doc comments.
* Ideally, framework experience: we want to generate mini-applications
by binding external data into a Flex/AS3 scaffolding.
* Domain-specific knowledge like boolean satisfiability or relationship
graphing would be great, but not required.

No restrictions on location, telecommuting is fine. I am NOT in charge
of compensation, but it would be competitive, bearing in mind that it
would be a moderately large project under minimal time pressure.
Excellent English preferred. You'd be keeping in touch via email, IM,
and phone, and performing regular checkins to our source control system
for code reviews.

Please respond to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Thank you!

It's more that good HTML _browsers_ pick up on that, and the documents
themselves are along for the ride, but yes, this is a valid concern of ours
as well. For now, at least, there's Tinic Uro's advice on how to use
ColorMatrixFilter to create a high-contrast mode:

http://www.kaourantin.net/2005/09/using-flash-player-8-filters-for-good.html

This is a lot more tricky, due to the nature of Flash vs. HTML. Most HTML
resizes well because it absorbs the default style of the document. However,
when you lay out, say, a list with a height of x pixels, and then the
document renders text of >x pixels, the text gets smashed together. Most
text in Flash is pinned to a certain area, and may be in containers (like
buttons) that won't expand to fit, or would throw other containers out of
whack.

The solution, IMO, is the same for Flash as it is for HTML. You'll notice
that the new approach in Firefox 3 and IE 7+ (and what's always been the
approach in Opera) is for the entire document, not just the text, to be
magnified. That includes Flash objects. When you zoom in, the whole object
gets bigger, but retains its layout. (You can also zoom within the Flash
Player by right-clicking, and resize in older browsers by setting the size
of your object in relative units like em.) That may cause some scrolling
around, but it also ensures that apps that didn't take accessibility into
consideration can still be used by people with low vision.

Thanks,
Matt May

Depends on what he's doing. As long as the instance has a name, it'll
continue to perform as expected. The problem is that changing a property
of it by code breaks the attachment to the timeline, or vice versa.
Doing manual transformations on the main object but code transformations
on the internal movie (textfield in this case) makes a 'stack' of
changes so it works well.

This *might* be useful -- but really only the "Use High Contrast" option
would contain information that Flash could utilize -- and I'm not entirely
sure that would be the best way to get that information.

b) Text should default to OS settings

This sounds like a bad idea. Due to the highly graphic nature of flash
design, you don't want the OS to automagically override your layout. Flash
isn't HTML and comparing it to HTML is not a fair comparison.

You're not building "pages" in Flash, but applications. As such, it's the
job of your application to respond to the user's needs either by honoring
their preferences set within your application (saved to cookie, login
details from database, etc) or from detecting their current settings by some
other means (I'm thinking specifically of JavaScript here).

That means building layouts that can accept different sized text, different
color text -- generally being adaptive. The MovieClip, TextField, etc.
classes don't come with that kind of thing built in. The only way we could
have functionality you indicate in flash is within a framework -- like some
future version of Flex.

Being automatically accessible means using standard controls with standard
behavior so that when the user's preferences are different, the control
already knows how to respond. But the second you try to do something out of
the ordinary, accessibility is all up to you to implement. This isn't really
all that different from desktop development, except with Flash, it's almost
all custom, graphic work.

How often do you really use the components day-to-day?

keyframe. The font is embedded. If I put the text layer under a mask
in order to hide/reveal it depending on the location on the timeline,
when the playback head goes crosses the hide/reveal threshold the value
of the dynamic text reverts to the value setup on the timeline.

Is there a way to do this _without_ AS? I want to keep the animation
open for the designer.

Thanks!

Re: [Flashcoders] Graphic design universities

2008-02-20 Thread Cory Petosky
If you don't mind the cold, a lot of the designers I've met have gone
to the Minneapolis College of Art and Design (MCAD)
. There are a lot of genuinely talented guys
there, and their degree programs sound like just what you're looking
for.

Many good friends (amazing designers/Flash animators) have highly
recommended the place to me.

[Flashcoders] keeping dynamic text persistent during animation

2008-02-20 Thread Andrew Sinning

This isn't actually a coding problem, but here it goes:

I'm working with AS2 in CS3.

During an animation, there is some dynamic text that needs to be hidden
and revealed. I have one continuous layer of text with just the initial

[Flashcoders] Default accessibility settings

2008-02-20 Thread Zárate
Hi list,

I've been wondering for quite a while about 2 small things that might
improve a lot accessibility in Flash:

a) Read-only access to OS accesbility settings.

One big accessibility problem these days is that Flash doesn't react
to user accessibility settings. For example, people with sight
problems might have set up his computer to high contrast or big fonts
or something like that. Good HTML pages can easily pick up that, but
don't know a way to do so in Flash.

b) Text should default to OS settings

Again, if the user has set up his text to big and yellow, couldn't
Flash text default to that? This cannot harm anyone because people
interested in applying whatever TextFormat would keep doing it as they
are doing now. Could this apply to movie's background color too?

What do you think?

Good luck picking a school,

Hi list.

I have two years to choose in which univerity i'll go when my school studies
finish. I am looking for some graphical design universitys in which i can
apply my knowledge offlash, animation, video and audio modeling. So, mostly
about graphics and motion. I've been googling the web, but i found so many
results that my head went bad,and they mostly all of them had some other
studies that i don't like such as ecomony, telecommunication between others.

So, can someone recommend me some universites you think are good?

Thanks

Re: [Flashcoders] AIR - NativeWindow Resizing

2008-02-20 Thread Sidney de Koning

Corban, you can find a really good pdf here:
all about development for air apps:
http://download.macromedia.com/pub/labs/air/air_b3_docs_flash_121207.zip
it in is a pdf file with cases/tutorials. Covers about everything (well
, alot ;)).

Have fun!

You may want to try something like:

I have been staring at this:

trying to make sense of it. But not having much luck. Thanks in advance!

var meta:Object = new Object();

  NativeWindow.width = meta.width;

}
