Re: maker.ini OpenDirOnStart: How can I prevent it from being updated?

2008-02-14 Thread Jeremy H. Griffith
On Thu, 14 Feb 2008 07:54:19 +, Berman, Marta [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Is there any way to turn off this automatic update when exiting FrameMaker, so
that I can set a default directory? Or is there another way to accomplish what
I want from within FrameMaker?

I can think of two workarounds:

* Create a batch file that overrides the personalized maker.ini file with a
saved copy of the default one and then opens FrameMaker. Use this batch file
to start FrameMaker.

* Make the personalized maker.ini file read only. Then it cannot be updated
when exiting FrameMaker.

In both of these workarounds, other settings such as RecentFiles, spell check
options, and zoom settings also cannot be updated.

Here's another one. The Mif2Go demo version includes a utility,
setini.exe, that can be used to set individual .ini-file items.
In the User's Guide, it's described in par. 32.4.2.3, Changing
configuration settings with system commands:

You can use a system command to make an arbitrary change to the
configuration file, by having the command invoke command-line
utility setini.exe, which is included in the Mif2Go distribution.

Command setini changes the value of a single setting:
setini inifile.ini section keyword value

  For example:
setini mif2htm.ini HTMLOptions NoFonts Yes
would exclude the use of font tags in HTML output.

This works with any .ini file, so you could use:
  setini C:\path\to\maker.ini Directories OpenDirOnStart X:\path\you\want
in your bat file before opening Frame. Note that the quotes are
only needed if the paths contain any spaces.

The Mif2Go demo version is available at:

future of FrameMaker

2008-02-14 Thread Jakob Fix
Hello,

I would like to know if anybody has some reliable first-hand
information about the future of FrameMaker. I have recently heard of
people having attended Adobe training sessions for FrameMaker that
Adobe may/will probably stop FrameMaker development. As the
organization I am working for is a big user of FrameMaker (but we
don't currently have any direct contacts with Adobe), we are getting
slightly worried about the future.

Any insights will be greatly appreciated.

I've been learning FM in the middle of a project, and it sometimes seems
a bit ornery. I'm inserting graphics linked from a Powerpoint file.
First I do Special Anchored Frame, and set Top of column. Then I
paste the graphic into the frame. Twice today, after I have done this
process 5 or 10 times, I perform the first step and suddenly FM closes
without saving. Since contemporary software usually includes a Newbie
Detector Module to make things more exciting for the beginner, maybe
someone could suggest a way to make myself less obvious to the NDM.
Thanks.

I think the memory issue is indeed the cause for this. I did my process
again and saved after each insertion. No problems occurred. But I think
software should handle a memory issue much more gracefully than simply
closing without saving-such as warning me, or refusing to execute the
step that would make it close. (Do Adobe people monitor this list?)

Hi...

No one in this thread has mentioned that, when working with graphics,
FrameMaker likes to have plenty of RAM available to it, especially if
other applications are open and also have images loaded. There's no
rule of thumb that I know of, but I wouldn't attempt to do much with
multiple graphic files unless I had at least 1GB or preferably 2GB or
more of RAM on my system. 512MB or less is an invitation to a crash.

I'll drink to that! (although actually I prefer good ales...)

There is a point when such speculation does warrant consideration, such
as the (very) long lag between updates or new releases that FrameMaker
has experienced in the past. However, given the fairly recent release
of FM8 and then the Technical Communication Suite edition, this is
frankly ridiculous at this time.

You're right, of course, FM should handle the problem much more
gracefully.

But let me re-emphasize advice you got earlier and chose to ignore:
Don't use OLE! It's OK for one or two Visio drawings or PowerPoint
slides, but each time you do that, you're adding to the FM file all the
code needed to load the graphic's native application and edit it in
place. The overhead is huge and complex.

You have Acrobat, right? Or at least Distiller, since it comes with FM.
You're much better off creating PDFs of your Visio or PowerPoint
graphics and importing those by reference (File Import File, Import
By Reference). Then, when a graphic changes, you just PDF it again (same
name and location, overwriting the previous version). FM sees that the
referenced file is newer, and your doc is updated automatically.

HTH!

The FM document contains several tables with different formats (Format A,

Is there a way to include the table format name in the XML? Something
like:

TABLE ID=Format A.../TABLE

TABLE ID=Format B.../TABLE

RE: FM abruptly closes with no save

2008-02-14 Thread Brewster, Christopher C
As to why I'm inserting graphics with links, I explained this in a
couple of individual emails so I'll just say it again. I inherited this
project from an outside consultant. For now I have to stick with the
documents as they're currently done. The consultant company puts its
screen shots in a Powerpoint. Each Ppt slide is then copied into the FM
document using Paste Special, and using the Linked document option in
that dialog (and I mean the whole slide, not just the graphic on it).
The irony of all this is that my own company wants the whole thing moved
over to Word when it's possible. But right now I'm using FM documents
that have been APPROVED, which is (as you know) a corporate term meaning
they can't be changed other than adding new material.

I think the memory issue is indeed the cause for this. I did

make it close. (Do Adobe people monitor this list?)

HTH!
Richard

I'm shocked, SHOCKED! that FM can't read your mind and fix typos,
content errors, and badly-thought-out language. After all, this is now
version 8G.

When I worked at Ashton-Tate (who?), the dBASE development team was
working towards reducing the command language to two commands: Set
bugs OFF, and DO what I'm thinking. It's always good to aim high, and
persist in getting closer to that goal.

Thanks for the on-the-scene update.

Re: future of FrameMaker

2008-02-14 Thread Peter Gold
Paul's raised an interesting issue here. With the release of the
Technical Communication Suite, which includes Captivate 3, RoboHelp,
and Acrobat 8 3D, the outlook for FM on Mac OS X looks bleaker because
Captivate and RoboHelp are Windows-only applications, and Acrobat on
Mac OS X is short a few important forms and other features because
Apple doesn't expose the hooks they require for developers to program
them.

Perhaps the quote about FM development being frozen related to
Macintosh support, which seems to be even more likely to be permanent
with FM's bundled partner applications in the TCS.

I was going to stay out of this, but it happens to me every day of the
week -- whenever I try to use my mouse and the Framemaker scroll bar
(instead of touchpad scroll or arrows/pg up/down).

Random crashes. Has nothing to do with graphics. Just reaching
for/moving the scroll bar with a certain velocity.

It happened with 7.1 and I was hoping it'd be fixed by 7.2. but no go. I
searched once for a bug/solution and never saw it mentioned so I figured
it was my machine. But it's been happening for at least a year now even
after I switched machines...

Thanks.

RE: Language Translation Estimates

2008-02-14 Thread Dennis Brunnenmeyer
Lin...

I would think the costs would depend a lot on how difficult the
document is to translate. Plain English text must be a lot easier
than that with many difficult technical terms and convoluted
explanations that a non-technical translator may find difficult to
understand. The only valid way to sort this out is to get a qualified
translator to tell you how long it would take. They can only do that
if they see the files.

Frankly, the estimate Art received seems like a bargain to me. I'm a
little curious about how the fonts and formatting would be handled in
such a situation if the alphabets and characters are significantly different.

Tech Suite Integration

2008-02-14 Thread Don Rinderknecht
I've looked into the tech suite just a little bit, and noticed that the
FM and RH are enhanced versions.
I gather this is on the integration of the two products.

Are there any differences in Captivate or Acrobat 3D from the standard
versions?

Has anyone had experience with these enhanced versions?
How does it affect your workflow when creating documentation?

Any hints on where I can find more information about the details of the
differences in the Tech Suite versions?

Thanks,
Don

maker.ini OpenDirOnStart: How can I prevent it from being updated?

2008-02-14 Thread Berman, Marta
Hello

I would like to set a default directory from which files should always be
accessed (File-->Open), regardless of the last directory from which the files
were opened.

I know about the OpenDirOnStart setting in the personalized version of
maker.ini (not the one in the main installation directory).

But every time I exit FrameMaker, FrameMaker automates the OpenDirOnStart
setting with the name of the last directory used for opening files, as is
described in the description of OpenDirOnStart:

"OpenDirOnStart specifies which folder should initially appear in the Open
dialog box. Every time you exit, this setting is updated to the folder from
which you last opened a document."

Use this batch file to
start FrameMaker.

* Make the personalized maker.ini file "read only." Then it cannot be updated
when exiting FrameMaker.

In both of these workarounds, other settings such as RecentFiles, spell check
options, and zoom settings also cannot be updated.

Much obliged,
Marta

Here's another one. The Mif2Go demo version includes a utility,
setini.exe, that can be used to set individual .ini-file items.
In the User's Guide, it's described in par. 32.4.2.3, "Changing
configuration settings with system commands":

You can use a system command to make an arbitrary change to the
configuration file, by having the command invoke command-line
utility setini.exe, which is included in the Mif2Go distribution.

Command setini changes the value of a single setting:
setini inifile.ini section keyword value

  For example:
setini mif2htm.ini HTMLOptions NoFonts Yes
would exclude the use of tags in HTML output.

This works with any .ini file, so you could use:
  setini "C:\path\to\maker.ini" Directories OpenDirOnStart "X:\path\you\want"
in your bat file before opening Frame. Note that the quotes are
only needed if the paths contain any spaces.

The Mif2Go demo version is available at:

The last time FM crashed in this way, I had just imported an image

I've been learning FM in the middle of a project, and it sometimes seems
a bit ornery. I'm inserting graphics linked from a Powerpoint file.
First I do Special > Anchored Frame, and set "Top of column". Then I
paste the graphic into the frame. Twice today, after I have done this
process 5 or 10 times, I perform the first step and suddenly FM closes
without saving. Since contemporary software usually includes a Newbie
Detector Module to make things more exciting for the beginner, maybe
someone could suggest a way to make myself less obvious to the NDM.
Thanks.

FM abruptly closes with no save

2008-02-14 Thread Brewster, Christopher C
I think the memory issue is indeed the cause for this. I did my process
again and saved after each insertion. No problems occurred. But I think
software should handle a memory issue much more gracefully than simply
closing without saving-such as warning me, or refusing to execute the
step that would make it close. (Do Adobe people monitor this list?)

Hi...

No one in this thread has mentioned that, when working with graphics,
FrameMaker likes to have plenty of RAM available to it, especially if
other applications are open and also have images loaded. There's no
"rule of thumb" that I know of, but I wouldn't attempt to do much with
multiple graphic files unless I had at least 1GB or preferably 2GB or
more of RAM on my system.

You're much better off creating PDFs of your Visio or PowerPoint
graphics and importing those by reference (File > Import > File, Import
By Reference). Then, when a graphic changes, you just PDF it again (same
name and location, overwriting the previous version). FM sees that the
referenced file is newer, and your doc is updated automatically.

HTH!

FM abruptly closes with no save

2008-02-14 Thread Brewster, Christopher C
As to why I'm inserting graphics with links, I explained this in a
couple of individual emails so I'll just say it again. I inherited this
project from an outside consultant. For now I have to stick with the
documents as they're currently done. The consultant company puts its
screen shots in a Powerpoint. Each Ppt slide is then copied into the FM
document using Paste Special, and using the "Linked document" option in
that dialog (and I mean the whole slide, not just the graphic on it).
The irony of all this is that my own company wants the whole thing moved
over to Word when it's possible. But right now I'm using FM documents
that have been APPROVED, which is (as you know) a corporate term meaning
they can't be changed other than adding new material.

You're much better off creating PDFs of your Visio or PowerPoint
graphics and importing those by reference (File > Import > File, Import
By Reference). Then, when a graphic changes, you just PDF it again (same
name and location, overwriting the previous version). FM sees that the
referenced file is newer, and your doc is updated automatically.

HTH!

Adobe just came out with version 8 a few months ago, and two updates since.
They are also actively seeking feature requests for version 9 in the Adobe
FrameMaker Users Forum. You'd be better off to worry about FrameMaker's
competitors. :)

I wonder is these rumors are started by competitors. It's possible that
Adobe puts less development time into FM as they do their other more
profitable programs, but I think it's highly unlikely that they will
stop developing it entirely.

This could fit nicely into a thread on a tech-writer's list about
words with double meanings.

Does "hasn't gone anywhere" mean "FrameMaker development has been
static while the world around it has moved on," or does it mean,
"FrameMaker is still here in the building, and performing its heart

Why do programs always have to "go" somewhere to be worth using? As long
a company supports it's products, tries to fix the bugs and is keeping

overhaul in each version. That's the myth that software companies like

future of FrameMaker

2008-02-14 Thread Bernard Aschwanden
Please see every email from the past 10 plus years that I've posted to the
Frame Users about the demise of Frame. Rather than writing it again it helps
me. I should just put that message into a CMS as a DITA file for the future
so that I can reuse it over and over and over when the rumor starts up.

I'm at the FrameMaker Chautauqua in North Carolina right now. Adobe is here.
They are talking about the future of the product. The development team is
here. They are interviewing people and discussing requirements for the
future. There is an active discussion between all attendees and I can't
possibly see it all being done for show.

So, while I don't work for Adobe, I can say definitively that there is a
future for the product. I'm in direct contact with all levels of the dev
team right here and there are all moving ahead.

Add to that the tech comm suite and the future looks bright.

I'm shocked, SHOCKED! that FM can't read your mind and fix typos,
content errors, and badly-thought-out language. After all, this is now
version 8.

When I worked at Ashton-Tate (who?), the dBASE development team was
working towards reducing the command language to two commands: Set
bugs OFF, and DO what I'm thinking. It's always good to aim high, and
persist in getting closer to that goal.

Thanks for the on-the-scene update.

Hi Bernard,

At the risk of repeating myself (ha, ha!), please tell RJ and the
team that the feature I - and the nearly 4,000 Adobe customers who've
signed the FM4OSX Petition - really, really want in FrameMaker 9.0 is

Just so nobody has any unwarranted expectations ...

Regardless of whether you or I like it, the next major version
of FrameMaker will NOT support Macintosh natively for the exact
same reasons such support was discontinued in the first place.
You obviously can try to use it under Parallels or Boot Camp on
MacIntel systems.

Language Translation Estimates

2008-02-14 Thread Lin Surasky
Hi all-

With the Chatauqua going on, I'm having trouble hunting people down, and
of course my boss needs an answer to this yesterday (even though he only
asked me today)

We're considering translating our docs library from English into French.
Everything is in FrameMaker, the templates are simple and there are lots
of screen shots that will need to be replaced. How do you esimate a
project like this? How many minutes/hours per page for language
translation, cleanup/layout and graphics replacement? (Assume only 1
graphic per page)

Anyone have any great sites (or insight) to share?

Thanks!
Lin

PS - Ann or Diane G -- I know you're out there somewhere! Help a girl
out, wouldya? ;-)

Language Translation Estimates

2008-02-14 Thread Art Campbell
I just received estimates from vendors for a 250 English word document
to be translated into 7 languages, including reformatting in Frame.
Range was $700-800 for that particular package. About $100 per
language for that word count.

All the vendors I chatted with were quite happy to provide an estimate
from the files I sent them... so I'd suggest taking the extra time to
talk to several vendors so you can get an accurate range.

Cheers,
Art

Thanks, Art. I'm looking into that now. I see several sites have cost
estimates, but no one has a time estimate (i.e., x many hours per page

this; it may be done in-house, but I have no idea how long I should tell
them it will take!

A new version of WINE was released last week, so if you're an Intel
Mac user and want to run Windows FrameMaker without Windows, VMWare,
Parallels, or Boot Camp, you may wish to give it a try. They're
looking for Framemaker users to test Framemaker and report bugs. More

Understand, though, that even if that "works" it would be considered
an unsupported configuration by Adobe. There is absolutely NO technical
support for using Adobe applications under such environments. (A similar
issue came up with regards to running InDesign under WINE on various
Linux and UNIX platforms.)

Markers in the text

2008-02-14 Thread Deirdre Reagan
Well, I never figured out what the codes mean, but I did figure out
how to get rid of the error message.

You people are terrifically helpful and I can't tell you how much I
appreciate knowing I have a resource to go to when I have questions.

Thank you so much!

Markers in the text

2008-02-14 Thread Chen, Loretta
Hi Deirdre,

If these are chapter names, it's probably showing up because you changed
your view conditional text settings in those chapters to deal with your
problem. Frame will warn you if you have them different in different
chapters in a book. Theoretically, you'll want them all set for Print
Only or Help Only when you're doing production.

To change all the conditional text settings in a book at once, highlight
all chapters and click View > Show/Hide conditional text.

FYI, you can also get messages like this (like about page numbers being
inconsistent) when you make changes in a book. Update the book and it
will probably disappear

Thanks all for the responses. I've discovered that the Ts are
conditional text markers. They hide the word "Or."

Ok then! I deleted them, ran my book, and now am getting the message:
Show/Hide setting for FM8_TRACK_CHANGES_ADDED is inconsistent.
Show/Hide setting for FM8_TRACK_CHANGES_DELETED is inconsistent.

Anyone know what I should do (other than reinsert the conditional text
-- we don't need those paragraphs anymore) to get rid of this message?

Thanks!

Deirdre

FM abruptly closes with no save

2008-02-14 Thread Chen, Loretta
I was going to stay out of this, but it happens to me every day of the
week -- whenever I try to use my mouse and the Framemaker scroll bar
(instead of touchpad scroll or arrows/pg up/down).

Random crashes. Has nothing to do with graphics. Just reaching
for/moving the scroll bar with a certain velocity.

It happened with 7.1 and I was hoping it'd be fixed by 7.2. but no go. I
searched once for a bug/solution and never saw it mentioned so I figured
it was my machine. But it's been happening for at least a year now even
after I switched machines...

I have been experiencing the same problem as Christopher. I am running
FrameMaker 7.1 on Windows XP. (And Christopher, I am not a newbie--I
have been using Fm for well over 10 years.)

The last time FM crashed in this way, I had just imported an image
(gif), reduced the size, and was adjusting the frame with the bottom
center handle.

You might try saving the powerpoint image as a png / bmp / gif, and then
do a import file.

Thanks.

Language Translation Estimates

I've looked into the tech suite just a little bit, and noticed that the
FM and RH are "enhanced" versions.

Thanks,
Don
