Hi Z,

There is no way to put variables inside of markers.

Specifically, I want to be able to put in a Hypertext marker (in
multiple places in the document) and do something like:

 gotolink Text

as the command, where Text is actually a User Variable.

Also, I want to be able to set the link destination in the same way, by
selecting some text in the document and putting in a hypertext marker
 with:

 newlink Text

 as the command!

Is there any way to do this?

question about modification date variable

2008-03-19 Thread Deirdre Reagan
Hello all!

I am staring at my FM 8.0 document and realize it's time yet again to
call on my good friends on teh intertubes.

I have a document of probably 30 pages with a Record of Revisions page.

The date on every single page is a cross reference to the original
date variable on the Record of Revisions page. Does that sound right
to you?

I'm asking because I'm wondering how to deal with revisions. How do I
modify the date on the pages that have been revised? Put a
modification date variable on the Record of Revisions page then
manually erase the cross-reference on each affected page and insert a
cross-reference to the Record of Revision modification date variable?

That seems like a lot of manual labor, and adding the cross reference
will actually take more time than just cutting and pasting the revised
date. And the automation of the cross-reference is irrelevant because
once the date's in place, it never changes except to get replaced by a
new revision date, which I have to do manually (see above). Am I
missing something?

I've checked both Help in FM and the varible section in the Adobe FM
User Guide, but I haven't found the answer.

Also, is there a good tutorial anywhere that can teach me all of this
stuff? Or is it a matter of experience?

Thanks,

Deirdre

MadCap Blaze

2008-03-19 Thread quills

I have been waiting with baited breath ever since the rumors of MadCap Blaze
came forth, that a replacement to
FrameMaker was in the works. I just downloaded the public beta.

Has anyone else done so? If so I wonder if anyone else shares my disappointment.

Blaze appears to be a variant of Flare. It isn't an authoring tool so much as a
conversion tool. It seems not to know
if its main thrust is HTML or XML, and it seems to lean heavily toward HTML.

I think that this product sufferes from delusions of adequacy. I am not a fan
of MadCap Flare, it's interface is
convoluted and difficult to master, and those same features have been
duplicated for Blaze. I really don't see much
difference between the two products.

Now I see that the printed media solution is Press.

It makes me wonder if MadCap is trying to emulate the Interleaf model, multiple
products for a single solution.
Mulitple prices for a single solution. Interleaf at the very least produced
solid SGML. It had a fairly good GUI and
method for assigning formatting tags. FrameMaker was simplier, monolithic and
cheaper.

With what MadCap is doing they seem bent on producing a series of products that
are more complicated, and more
expensive than FrameMaker and any other conversion tool with it.

Does anyone else have a simliar view of this, or a different experience?

It feels like Blue Sky happening all over again.

I downloaded and installed it as well, but there was no documentation to

they have some kind of tutorial available, I may try it again.

2008-03-19 Thread Bill Swallow
I honestly came to the same conclusions about Blaze. I don't see it
being that much different from Flare at all. I was also disappointed
that it wasn't true XML (it's XHTML) and that it's not DITA capable
from what I've seen. IMO it's not an alternative to FM at all.

RE: MadCap Blaze

2008-03-19 Thread Flato, Gillian
Sharon Burton, from MadCap, did a presentation at our last STC meeting. She
said that Blaze was for people who only did print publishing and Flare was for
print and help files etc.

Both Blaze and Flare make you write in a topic-oriented way, yet it doesn't do
DITA. Sharon talked about all of the advantages of doing topic-oriented
writing.

I asked her why MadCap would make a product that doesn't do DITA when they are
trying to compete with Frame. I said that right now, with Frame 8, all I had to
do was flip it to structured and I had DITA, so moving to Blaze or Flare was a
step backward. She didn't really have an answer for me on that.

She said that Madcap was creating a CMS first, and then it was going to make
Blaze and Flare DITA compatible. I told her that in my opinion, that was a bad
plan. They will never be competitive with Frame until they do DITA, and no one
is going to buy a CMS when they can get Subversion and CVS for free so they
would be better off doing DITA now and the CMS later.

I don't know if she passed on what I said to the MadCap people but we'll see.

RE: MadCap Blaze

2008-03-19 Thread Gordon McLean
The other products in the MadCap lineup hint more at the CMS route (check
their press release pages).

Once they get those items in play it could be an interesting product set,
and personally I think they are right to take on Adobe, even if they are
falling short at the moment. Should keep Adobe on their toes (as well as the
other vendors). Personally I think the MadCap product suite will more
closely compete with AuthorIT but... hey, only time will tell.

2008-03-19 Thread William Gaffga
I downloaded it. Underwhelmed.

We purchased Flare in our move away from WebWorks Publisher Pro and I am
just starting to learn it. I looked at Blaze and was shocked that it
looked identical to Flare and that I had no idea how to go about making
a book. Never have I acquired a DTP, layout or text app of any sort and
had no idea how to proceed. If I banged my head against it for a little
while I'm sure I'd get it but decided instead to import a FM book (about
350 pages) and look at the results.

30 minutes later I had a bunch of files all in one structure. PNGs mixed
in with HTML files. Chaos. And HTML files? You gotta be kidding me.

If I have a lot of free time on my hands I might look again but right
now ... not looking at Blaze at all as a replacement for FM.

FrameMaker Index of Referenced Graphics

2008-03-19 Thread Hales-Crotchett, Nicole
Hi,

Back in January, Mr. Combs offered the following great solution to creating a
list of referenced graphics in a document.

Date: Tue, 29 Jan 2008 08:34:14 -0700

From: Combs, Richard [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Subject: RE: List of linked graphic file locations

Nope, if they're really _linked_ (imported by reference), it's a piece of cake.
From the book window, with the last file in the book selected, select Add
Index of References. In the Set Up dialog box, move Imported Graphics to the
Include References box. Click Add. Voila! At the end of your book, FM adds an
alphabetical index of referenced graphics. Each entry shows the complete path
and file name.

HTH!

Richard

I was wondering if anyone has a QD solution that would create not an
alphabetical list, but a list in order by page number. Here’s my code from the
Reference Pages:

1, 2–3

$symbols$numerics$alphabetics

-‑–—

Level1IOR

openObjectId $relfilename:$ObjectType $ObjectId

$autorange$chapnum‑$pagenum

I’ve been tinkering around with this all morning and can’t figure out how to
bend it to my will. Any suggestions?

FrameMaker 7.1 unstructured, Windoze XP Pro.

Thanks in advance,

Step away from that reference page! :-)

FM supports two broad categories of generated lists: an _Index_ is in
alphabetical order; a _List_ is in order of occurrence (that is, page
number order).

So, you just need to repeat my previous instructions, but this time
select Add List of References.

control!

2008-03-19 Thread Mollye Barrett
Hi All,

I have many unstructured books and would like to do two things:

1- Contol the chapter name based on the chapter number
Chapter 2 = Operation
Chapter 3 = Lubrication

Can I do this with a sort of map on the reference pages and control it at
the book level or simply have the chapter name change based on numbering
properties?

2- Control a book number in the footer on the book

Thanks for all your help...past, present and future!

I'm revamping these books so the styles change (too frequently) and
importing format across many, many files can be messy. I'd like to control
this so it's more automated and works from the book leve as much as

Re: control!

2008-03-19 Thread Art Campbell
Mollye,

I think #2 is pretty easy -- I'd just create a BookNumber variable
that lived in all of the book's component files. Pick one master file,
insert the variable in the footer on the master page(s). Then set the
contents of the variable in that master file, and Import Formats
Variables and Page Layouts into all the component files.

Number 1, though, I'd only try to play with if you're sure the chapter
orders are not going to change. I think the only way you could do it
automatically is with FrameScript...

I'd keep that one looser, myself, and just have separate tags for
ChapterNumber and ChapterTitle.
Then type the actual chapter title in as text. And use $paratext
variables or cross-references to propagate it.

XSLT does not deal with formatting. You use XSLT to rearrange
content
or to include/exclude particular elements based on tags,
attributes, or
location in the node tree (e.g. what element it is a child of).

Formatting is handled by the EDD.

More like a flicker than a Blaze

2008-03-19 Thread Hedley Finger

Blaze the FrameMaker killer? Don't make me laugh.

What about a named style for everything? What about smart
cross-references? What about variables? What about advanced search
and replace for anything? What about diagnostic reports?

XHTML, not even XML. No DITA.

Adobe will be able to have a good laugh and sink back into its
customary state of complacency.

Frame killer? Frame tickler.

And I wanted so much for it to be an advanced XML-based editor with
CSS3 page layout styling, or even a nifty XSL-FO styler. Breathe
easy Arbortext.

Regards,
Hedley

P.S. But if I want an advanced XHTML editor for my web site, this
baby will do.

Hi,

I would say that developing an EDD is more analogous to developing a DTD,
though FrameMaker provides an easy user interface for this purpose.

I have developed a minimilist EDD that I use to control help-specific

WebWorks RoundUp conference last November. I would be happy to send you the
paper, EDD, and page template if you are interested. You could play around
with the EDD and get a sense for how everything fits together.

Sharon Burton, from MadCap, did a presentation at our last STC meeting. She
said that Blaze was for people who only did print publishing and Flare was
for print and help files etc.

Both Blaze and Flare make you write in a topic-oriented way, yet it doesn't
do DITA. Sharon talked about all of the advantages of doing topic-oriented
writing.

I asked her why MadCap would make a product that doesn't do DITA when they
are trying to compete with Frame. I said that right now, with Frame 8, all I
had to do was flip it to structured and I had DITA, so moving to Blaze or
Flare was a step backward. She didn't really have an answer for me on that.

She said that Madcap was creating a CMS first, and then it was going to make
Blaze and Flare DITA compatible. I told her that in my opinion, that was a
bad plan. They will never be competitive with Frame until they do DITA, and
no one is going to buy a CMS when they can get Subversion and CVS for free
so they would be better off doing DITA now and the CMS later.

I don't know if she passed on what I said to the MadCap people but we'll
see.

question about modification date variable

2008-03-19 Thread qui...@airmail.net

Hi Scott,

I downloaded and installed it as well, but there was no documentation to
speak of. The interface was anything but intuitive so I uninstalled it. When
they have some kind of tutorial available, I may try it again.

I honestly came to the same conclusions about Blaze. I don't see it
being that much different from Flare at all. I was also disappointed
that it wasn't true XML (it's XHTML) and that it's not DITA capable
from what I've seen. IMO it's not an alternative to FM at all.

Blaze essentially IS Flare in that, if I remember correctly, all the
functionality in Blaze is also in Flare. Flare then has additional
publishing functionality.

Flare has more than Blaze? Ir did you mean that the other way around?

Either way, I'm kind of stumped why Blaze wasn't just made into a
significant Flare upgrade.

They must have something up their sleeve... or why did they once
position Blaze as FrameMaker killer? You wouldn't expect a serious
company to exaggerate things like that, would you? Maybe I forgot,
that in marketing everything is allowed...

Well, FrameMaker is still listed two times on the Blaze website: As
possible import format and as output format (which would only be
necessary if the products own print layout capabilities are somewhat
limited).

BTW, I am hesitant to install .NET 3.0 and enjoy your reports!

I have to agree. And for the CMS thing, just last night some of us in

FrameMaker Index of Referenced Graphics

2008-03-19 Thread Hales-Crotchett, Nicole
Hi,

Back in January, Mr. Combs offered the following great solution to creating a
list of referenced graphics in a document.

Date: Tue, 29 Jan 2008 08:34:14 -0700

From: "Combs, Richard"

Subject: RE: List of linked graphic file locations

Nope, if they're really _linked_ (imported by reference), it's a piece of cake.
From the book window, with the last file in the book selected, select Add >
Index of > References. In the Set Up dialog box, move Imported Graphics to the
Include References box. Click Add. Voila! At the end of your book, FM adds an
alphabetical index of referenced graphics. Each entry shows the complete path
and file name.

HTH!

Richard

I was wondering if anyone has a Q solution that would create not an
alphabetical list, but a list in order by page number. Here?s my code from the
Reference Pages:

1, 2?3

<$symbols><$numerics><$alphabetics>

-???

Level1IOR

openObjectId <$relfilename>:<$ObjectType> <$ObjectId>

<$autorange><$chapnum>?<$pagenum>

I?ve been tinkering around with this all morning and can?t figure out how to
bend it to my will. Any suggestions?

FrameMaker 7.1 unstructured, Windoze XP Pro.

Thanks in advance,

Nicole

Step away from that reference page! :-)

FM supports two broad categories of generated lists: an _Index_ is in
alphabetical order; a _List_ is in order of occurrence (that is, page
number order).

So, you just need to repeat my previous instructions, but this time
select Add > List of > References.

No not quite, but that likely what I implied. What's needed is automation.
I'm revamping these books so the styles change (too frequently) and
importing format across many, many files can be messy. I'd like to control
this so it's more automated and works from the book leve as much as
possible.

2008-03-19 Thread Art Campbell
Mollye,

I think #2 is pretty easy -- I'd just create a BookNumber variable
that lived in all of the book's component files. Pick one master file,
insert the variable in the footer on the master page(s). Then set the
contents of the variable in that master file, and Import > Formats >
Variables and Page Layouts into all the component files.

Number 1, though, I'd only try to play with if you're sure the chapter
orders are not going to change. I think the only way you could do it
automatically is with FrameScript...

I'd keep that one looser, myself, and just have separate tags for
ChapterNumber and ChapterTitle.
Then type the actual chapter title in as text. And use <$paratext>
variables or cross-references to propagate it.

XLST STYLESHEETS

2008-03-19 Thread Flato, Gillian
Does anyone know a good source for Xlst stylesheets for structured
Frame? Are they easy to create with Frame? I want my PDF to look as good
as it does in unstructured Frame.

Thank you,

XLST STYLESHEETS

2008-03-19 Thread Flato, Gillian
Is creating an EDD in structured Frame as easy as creating a master page
and para/char tags in unstructured Frame?

Thank you,

XSLT does not deal with formatting. You use XSLT to rearrange
content
or to include/exclude particular elements based on tags,
attributes, or
location in the node tree (e.g. what element it is a child of).

Formatting is handled by the EDD.

XLST STYLESHEETS

2008-03-19 Thread Martin R. Smith

Hi,

I would say that developing an EDD is more analogous to developing a DTD,
though FrameMaker provides an easy user interface for this purpose.

I have developed a minimilist EDD that I use to control help-specific
behavior WebWorks ePublisher Pro. I presented a paper on this subject at the
WebWorks RoundUp conference last November. I would be happy to send you the
paper, EDD, and page template if you are interested. You could play around
with the EDD and get a sense for how everything fits together.

Best regards,

Martin
