Very slow loading of FM6 files into FM9

2009-06-17 Thread Adrian Cherry

Have recently upgraded to FM9 and applied the patches.
Files that took a few seconds to load into FM6 are now taking up to 10 minutes
to load into FM9. These files are not massive but do have cross-references,
conditional text, text insets and eps and jpg graphics.
I have also tried importing eps graphics into new FM9 files and this either
slows the machine to nearly a full stop or crashes. JPGs are not a problem.
We have tried loading the same files to FM9 on a similar spec machine on the
same network connection and that loads the files OK.
The PC in question is: HP Compaq DX2200MT; Intel Pentium 4, 3.2 GHz; 768 Mb
RAM, 80 Gig HD of which 20 Gig is free; Windows XP Pro, Version 2002, SP3. ATi
Fire GL 3100, latest driver from their web-site.
Any input on this issue is very welcome.

First, your RAM and disk free space are way low... That is likely to
be the problem, although it may be compounded if your anti-virus
program scans every file as it opens. And you don't mention your
network speed, which may be a factor.

Even Adobe is recommending 1G of RAM, but in the real world, more than
2G of RAM would be a minimal amount for this config, and you'd need
more if you run any graphics-intensive programs simultaneously. Just
as a BTW, RAM is cheap right now...
And in general, you'd want to have a third to half of the hard drive
free for swap space and temp files. If you haven't cleaned up the hard
drive with a utility lately, it may be time.

One thing you might try is saving the converted files out as MIF to
clean up any residual unused references or characters, but I'd say
your machine just doesn't have enough horsepower.

I've never had good experiences working with FM across a network. On top of
Art's suggestions, make sure all the files are on your local computer, and then
perform your authoring/document generation/etc there.

Re: Very slow loading of FM6 files into FM9

2009-06-17 Thread Mike Wickham
Have recently upgraded to FM9 and applied the patches.
Files that took a few seconds to load into FM6 are now taking up to 10
minutes to load into FM9. These files are not massive but do have cross-
references, conditional text, text insets and eps and jpg graphics.
I have also tried importing eps graphics into new FM9 files and this
 either
slows the machine to nearly a full stop or crashes. JPGs are not a
 problem.

I noticed that FM9 was opening files much more slowly than previous FM
versions and attributed it to the fact that FM9 was preloading all graphics
at file open, instead of loading them only when I loaded the particular page
in a file. I wrote Adobe about it and got this response:

Begin Forwarded message
=
You might have the Insets Pod open in your default workspace which causes
all insets to load at the open of the document. To check whether this is a
cause, please do the following:

1. Make sure Hide Panels on Close is unselected in the File --
Preferences -- Interface dialog (see InterfacePreferences.jpg).
2. Open any file (if not already opened) such that workspace loads.
3. Close the Insets Pod from the workspace (see InsetsPod.jpg)
4. Once you have done these steps, you should see graphics loading only on
demand and not on open.

End Forwarded Message

Hope that helps,
Mike Wickham

FYI, the list software strips attachments.

Off the top of my head, I'd check the Paragraph Tag and make sure the

Eduardo,
I know you've solved the problem by copying the text into a new
document. If you happen to have saved the original, and still are curious
about figuring out what is going on, there may be something else you can
try. Does your document use conditional text? Can you select the text on p. 80?

I don't know whether the situation is parallel to yours, but several
years ago I had a document with mysterious shadow text. Most of the
content was a multi-page table with conditional rows. Hiding and then
showing the conditional text caused an extra page to appear in the middle
of the table. The new page contained extra copies of rows that appeared
elsewhere. Content on the new page could not be selected. Penelope Perkins
from Synergex suggested rehyphenating the document (which is done from the
dialog that appears when you click the Dictionaries button in the Spelling
Checker). Even if there is no hyphenation in a document, rehyphenating
causes FrameMaker to look at every paragraph and in my case solved the
problem. If you have encountered the same rare situation, rehyphenating may
help you as well.

You may also want to check the Master page and see if you have Sideheads set up.

Hope that helps.

The same thing happens to me. As far as I can tell, if you're the only

Re: Unexpected message when saving book file after changing conditional view

2009-06-17 Thread Art Campbell
This usually pops up if someone else has modified / opened / copied
the file while it's open on your desktop.

If you're sure that no one has, it's likely to be network error or a
permissions problem on the server and can be ignored.
It happens most often when your network occasionally goes up and down,
or you're working remotely on a VPN connection, this type of error
occurs whenever there's a momentary disconnect / reconnect.

 Other things I tried:
 - moving different files to the top of the book, the message always
points to the first file in the book.
 - changing the conditional view on just the first file in the book (from
the file window) and saving the file, I don't get the message.
 - created a new book (using File - New - Book) with two new chapter
files (using File - New - Document - Portrait) that include two new
conditional tags, still get the message.
 - reinstalled FM, still get the message.
 - tried creating a new book with new chapter files on two co-worker's

Has anyone else seen this message?  Is it something I should be
 concerned about?

I'm running Frame 8.0p277 with Windows XP SP2 and also have Acrobat

Thanks in advance for any insight.

Re: New Topic 2: PDF will not open at beginning

2009-06-17 Thread Art Campbell
Susan,

There's a parameter in the PDF setup or the PDF printer setup that you
can access from the FM Printer page that lets you specify the opening
page, but I don't have a version that old installed so I can't tell
you the exact location.

Assuming the title page is in the book file from which the PDF is
generated, it has a physical page number in Acrobat and within the PDF
-- you probably noticed that the page numbers of the book and the PDF
don't automatically match up.

If you can't find it and you need a quick fix, you may want to
download the eval version of Acrobat and make the adjustment on a
different system so you don't mess up your current install.

According to the help doc for Fm 8 (and I guess FM 7 is the same):
1. In the PDF Setup dialog box, choose Settings from the pop-up menu, or click
the Settings tab (Windows/UNIX).

2. Choose an option from the PDF Job Options pop-up menu for creating Adobe PDF
files. The options include predefined settings plus any custom job options you
created in Adobe PDF Creation Add-On (Windows), or Normalizer 8 (UNIX). For
descriptions of the predefined settings, see Job options.
++
In a book, the job options saved with the first file are applied to all files
in the book. To get the results you want in the exported PDF file, open the
first file, choose Format Document PDF Setup, adjust the settings, and then
click Set.
++
3. Type an opening page number and choose a zoom level.

So (assuming FM 7 is the same, of course!) to make this happen naturally, you
should either make your title page the first file in the book and set the job
options in that file; or shift its content into the beginning of the front
matter and set the job options in that file.

I found that Acrobat Pro won't save any document edits in trial mode.

I used to think Acrobat Pro was great - I've had four versions in the past, up
to and including AP 6. But Adobe's unpublished upgrade policy has changed all
that for me. I was having activation problems with Acrobat Pro 8 Upgrade,
caused by their very first AP 6 update via Flexnet, that support says won't be
fixed as it's no longer a supported product (all AP8 upgrade keys were
invalidated on March 1st, apparently!). I sent the box back to the reseller
for a refund and set about assessing alternatives.

Luckily, I found NitroPDF (www.nitropdf.com). Now, for $99, I get everything
Acro Pro can do and more, everything just works, and its distiller is
blazingly fast. *And* there's no FlexNet under the hood, deactivating your
activated products when it plonks an update into your previously working
installation. In short, Nitro makes Acro Pro look very, very ordinary.

To post-fix Susan's PDFs in Nitro, you can just add a bookmark to your initial
page, name it 'titlepage' (or anything you like) and then hit Ctrl-D, set the
initial page in the document properties and Save As... You can also set other
initial properties like the zoom level, pages per view and so on. It even
supports some properties that only apply to Acrobat Reader, that might or might
not be important for PDFs generated by Adobe's Distiller.

Still, if the document is going to be maintained, then hacking the PDF isn't a
very nice solution. Better to have Frame pass the proper arguments to
Distiller in the first place.

Very slow loading of FM6 files into FM9

2009-06-17 Thread Art Campbell

On top of

Very slow loading of FM6 files into FM9

I noticed that FM9 was opening files much more slowly than previous FM
versions and attributed it to the fact that FM9 was preloading all graphics
at file open, instead of loading them only when I loaded the particular page
in a file. I wrote Adobe about it and got this response:

Begin Forwarded message
=
You might have the "Insets Pod" open in your default workspace which causes
all insets to load at the open of the document. To check whether this is a
cause, please do the following:

1. Make sure "Hide Panels on Close" is unselected in the "File -->
Preferences --> Interface" dialog (see InterfacePreferences.jpg).
2. Open any file (if not already opened) such that workspace loads.
3. Close the "Insets Pod" from the workspace (see InsetsPod.jpg)
4. Once you have done these steps, you should see graphics loading only on
demand and not on open.

End Forwarded Message

Hope that helps,

  Any comments?

FYI, the list software strips attachments.

Off the top of my head, I'd check the Paragraph Tag and make sure the
following is true:

* Alignment -- Left
* First -- 0"
* Left -- 0"

You may also want to check the Master page and see if you have Sideheads set up.

Hope that helps.

A Frame Problem for the Record Books

Eduardo,
I know you've solved the problem by copying the text into a new
document. If you happen to have saved the original, and still are curious
about figuring out what is going on, there may be something else you can
try. Does your document use conditional text? Can you select the text on p. 80?

I don't know whether the situation is parallel to yours, but several
years ago I had a document with mysterious "shadow" text. Most of the
content was a multi-page table with conditional rows.

New Topic 2: PDF will not open at beginning

2009-06-17 Thread Susan Curtzwiler
Hi All,

Using FM 7.0, Acrobat Distiller 5.0, Vista Enterprise on Compaq laptop.

In the pdf setup, I have marked the file to open on pg 1. However, the file
is now opening at the end of the book.

Can I make the file open on the Title Page, which has no page number?

The title page is in the book window as a separate file -- would it help if I
attached the title page to the front matter?

What settings do I need ?

Solved RE: New Topic 1 _ Title out of aliignment

2009-06-17 Thread Susan Curtzwiler
Hi All,
This issue has been solved. The alignment = Left and so on were okay. I
went to another file that used the same header style, to see all the settings,
clicked on Update all. Then used the correct file as a base and imported
formats into the problem file -- title now is aligned correctly.

Thank You.

Unexpected message when saving book file after changing conditional view

2009-06-17 Thread Jeff Schweiner
I'm getting an unexpected message when working on FM books that uses
conditional tags. The message is listed below. The filename reported in
the message (chiaTp_cover.fm in the example below) is always the first
file in the book, all other files are saved without a message.

"File C:\Documents and
Settings\schween\Desktop\chiaTp\Sections\chiaTp_cover.fm has changed on
the disk since you last opened or saved it. Someone else has probably
modified the file. Do you want to save it anyway?"

The message is generated as follows:

1. Open the book file.
2. Open all files in the book (using Shift key + File -> Open All Files
in Book).
3. In the book window, select all files in the book, then change the
conditional view (using View -> Show/Hide Conditional Text).
4. I then save all the files in the book (using Shift key + File -> Save
All Files in Book) and get the message for only the first file in the
book.
5. I click OK in the message window. A GIF image on the cover master
page turns into a gray box, everything else seems fine. I put the GIF
in an anchored frame, that solved the gray image problem. But I still
get the message every time I change the conditional view and save the
files.

Other things I tried:
- moving different files to the top of the book, the message always
points to the first file in the book.
- changing the conditional view on just the first file in the book (from
the file window) and saving the file, I don't get the message.
- created a new book (using File -> New -> Book) with two new chapter
files (using File -> New -> Document -> Portrait) that include two new
conditional tags, still get the message.
- reinstalled FM, still get the message.
- tried creating a new book with new chapter files on two co-worker's
desktops, still get the message.

Has anyone else seen this message? Is it something I should be
concerned about?

I'm running Frame 8.0p277 with Windows XP SP2 and also have Acrobat
Professional 7 installed. The files are all on my local hard drive.

Thanks in advance for any insight.

The same thing happens to me. As far as I can tell, if you're the only
person working on the files, you can ignore the message. I'm not sure
how to prevent it, though. Even if it is preventable, it may not be
wise to.

Unexpected message when saving book file after changing conditional view

2009-06-17 Thread Art Campbell
This usually pops up if someone else has modified / opened / copied
the file while it's open on your desktop.

If you're sure that no one has, it's likely to be network error or a
permissions problem on the server and can be ignored.
It happens most often when your network occasionally goes up and down,
or you're working remotely on a VPN connection, this type of error
occurs whenever there's a momentary disconnect / reconnect.

can access from the FM Printer page that lets you specify the opening
page, but I don't have a version that old installed so I can't tell
you the exact location.
