RE: Disappearing Palette Items

2013-08-29 Thread Craig Ede
Reading the manual might help here.

The workspace menu doesn't read Authoring unless you have chosen the
Authoring workspace environment. That button name just shows what you
current workspace environment is set to. Mine can be Craig's Custom,
Authoring, Design, Review, Structured Authoring, or others.

Your palette items are disappearing because you are closing them. Docking
them will retain them, but if you undock them and then close them, they have
to reopened to reappear.

Reading the manual will help you understand how they work and what logic
drives their functioning.

Actually, they disappear IN THE MIDDLE OF WORKING on a single document/book
or multiple documents, not just on close! What a sad state of user interface
affairs FM has fallen into. :-)

I now realize that the workspace menu everyone keeps referring to is
actually the button that reads Authoring!

And while I can restore most of what I want to be in there, for some reason
I can't get Object Properties back there, it only wants to exist as a
free-standing window/part of the designer (which also won't move into the
docked set). Sigh.

Thanks all,

Announcement-FrameScript Sale

2013-08-29 Thread Frank Elmore

Announcing the FrameScript 6 Labor Day Sale

Now for a limited time, you can purchase FrameScript 6 and take 15% off your
entire order. When ordering, please use discount code save 15%.

Hurry, the discounted pricing ends on midnight September 2, 2013 EDT
(Eastern Daylight Time). Click here https://framescript.com/?page_id=6
to order.

As a bonus, FrameScript 6 now comes with a new Script Library, a set of
complete scripts, ready to run, no programming required. See below.

New FrameScript Script Library.

FrameScript is not just for script writers anymore!

The FrameScript script library is a set of useful scripts that can be used
without modification by anyone using FrameScript 6. They are standalone
scripts. No knowledge of programming or FrameScript is required.

Initially, there are two library scripts.

ArchiveFm

This is an Archiver script that collects all the files referenced in a
document and/or book and saves them to a standard zip file. This can be used
to make complete (or partial) backups of your document or book and to keep a
set of old versions of your documents. This provides an easy way to save
your day's work all in one place.

RefMagic

This displays a list of references (Images, Markers, Variables, XRefs, etc.)
in a document and allows you to not only see them in a list, but also to be
able to jump to each reference in a document. This is useful for navigating
a large document. It also allows you to take images imported by copy and
turn them into by reference images.

For more details about these library scripts see the web site
https://www.framescript.com.

Of course, if you are interested in stand-alone, no programming required
scripts, FrameScript already comes with many, including:

BookProps See all the numbering properties of a book and components at a
glance (an easy was to fix numbering problems).

DirSaveAsPdf Save all the documents in a folder to PDF.

ImportPgfFormats Import selected paragraph formats from one document to
another.

ImportCharFormats Import selected character formats from one document to
another.

VarCatalog A variable catalog window.

You should be able to do part of that with Acrobat. By page numbering, do you
mean the printed page number or the page number in the box at the top of the
Reader frame? If the later, you should be able to do that with Acrobat, too.

RE: Incorporating an existing PDF into an FM-generated PDF

2013-08-29 Thread Rick Quatro
Hi Linda,

It depends on how integrated the existing PDF is with the FM content. You
can import individual pages from an existing PDF into FrameMaker pages.
However, FrameMaker is not able to pick up any of the content of the
imported PDF pages for generated files and bookmarks, etc.

Like most everything else, some of this can be fixed with FrameScript. For
example, with stock FrameMaker, you can only import a single PDF page at a
time from a multi-page PDF. With FrameScript, you could import the entire
PDF with one command. Also, with a script, you could import incorporate
headings and page numbers from the PDF and hide them in your FrameMaker
document so you can get TOCs, bookmarks, cross-references, etc. to work with
the imported PDF content. If you are interested in exploring what is
possible, please contact me off-list.

Re: Disappearing Palette Items

2013-08-29 Thread Mike Wickham

Reading the manual might help here.

Good advice, but there hasn't been a FrameMaker manual since FM7. :) And
online help often requires the use of specific search terms to find
obscure information. Online help needs lots of work.

There is a really good video on using the new (as of FM9) interface.
It's really helpful in learning about docking palettes, setting up
workspaces, etc.. I didn't like the new interface until I saw this
video. Now, I wouldn't go back. Here's the link:

http://tv.adobe.com/watch/tips-and-tricks-for-technical-communicators-to-maximize-productivity/getting-started-with-the-new-framemaker-9-user-interface/

Some of the settings in File Preferences Interface can also affect the
behavior of palettes. I haven't followed this thread closely, but it
might be worth looking at the settings there. It might be helpful to
check out message #35 in the following thread, where I show an example
of the workspace I use and the settings to get it:
http://forums.adobe.com/message/4039348

Regarding not being able to make the Object Properties dialog dock, it
might depend on which one you mean. If you right-click on a selected
text frame and choose Object Properties, a standalone Customize Text
Frame dialog opens, but disappears when you click Set or Cancel. If you
right-click on graphic objects, the Object Properties dialog opens and
it is dockable (see example in my workspace mentioned above).

Well, I suppose that's true if you are talking about a printed and bound (dead
tree) manual. But there certainly has been a PDF that calls itself tieh
FrameMaker User Guide that is right there in the Documents folder within a
standard FrameMaker installation.

This is not to say that the manual is very comprehensive (it's not) or very
useable (it's not, because the organization is not great and the index is
useless). But it does exist, and it does cover some of the various issues that
the OP has asked about. In general, the quality of the FrameMaker User Guide
has gone steadily downhill since version 5.0, which was pre-Adobe. The manual
shrank by about 30% for v5.5.6, and since then every addition to the manual
seems to be offset by a similar sized deletion.

I need to apply the style elements of my TOC tags to the default TOC tags,

Karen,

Before you do that, check for another TOC flow on a different reference

TIP (this was the suggestion from the experienced framer):
Then resave the workspace with another name, as a backup. I name mine

The purpose of the backup is that the workspace can get corrupted. Rather

Re: Updating TOC Wipes Formatting

2013-08-29 Thread Karen Robbins
Luckily, only one TOC reference page. And the formatting now seems to apply
when updating.

But now I have another problem. My TOC page contains other content
(credits, legalese, etc.) besides the TOC, which takes up only about half
the page. When updating the book, FM doesn't replace the existing TOC; it
adds a whole new TOC on a new page 1 of this file, pushing my existing
content (TOC and other) to page 2.

Of course I can copy and paste the new, updated TOC in place of the old
one. Or maybe some other way of getting it into position. But if FM is
supposedly deleting the existing TOC when updating, why didn't this happen?

immediately after upgrading to Frame 9 and it made the paradigm shift
from Frame 7 so much smoother. A lot of people really struggled with

That should help you to get through the transition. It sure helped me

Get the FM interface (all pods, etc.) organized the way you like them, then
save the workspace with a name that you like.

TIP (this was the suggestion from the experienced framer):
Then resave the workspace with another name, as a backup. I name mine ED_1

The purpose of the backup is that the workspace can get corrupted. Rather than
start over, you can then just set the backup workspace, and from there, you can

Others have already offered suggestions about how you get the desired workspace

You should be able to do part of that with Acrobat. By page numbering, do you

Incorporating an existing PDF into an FM-generated PDF

2013-08-29 Thread Rick Quatro
Hi Linda,

It depends on how integrated the existing PDF is with the FM content. You
can import individual pages from an existing PDF into FrameMaker pages.
However, FrameMaker is not able to pick up any of the content of the
imported PDF pages for generated files and bookmarks, etc.

Like most everything else, some of this can be fixed with FrameScript. For
example, with stock FrameMaker, you can only import a single PDF page at a
time from a multi-page PDF. With FrameScript, you could import the entire
PDF with one command. Also, with a script, you could import incorporate
headings and page numbers from the PDF and "hide" them in your FrameMaker
document so you can get TOCs, bookmarks, cross-references, etc. to work with
the imported PDF content. If you are interested in exploring what is
possible, please contact me off-list.

Well, I suppose that's true if you are talking about a printed and bound ("dead
tree") manual.

Updating TOC Wipes Formatting

2013-08-29 Thread Karen Robbins
Here's what may be causing my problem: The TOC reference page has default
paragraph tags for HeadingATOC, HeadingBTOC, etc. But my document
has paragraph tags of Heading1TOC, Heading2TOC, etc.

I am not sure if I created (at some point in the distant past) the TOC
paragraph tags with that naming convention or how it came to be. Others
have muddled with these files before me, so it's hard to know.

I need to apply the style elements of my TOC tags to the default TOC tags,
then delete my tags and apply/use only the default tags (newly styled).
Then my TOC updates should be in better shape than they were before. ;-)

Thanks again,

Karen,

Before you do that, check for another TOC flow on a different reference
page. FM should have created it automagically when you generated the
TOC. You can disregard (or delete) the page that contains the wrong tags.

Updating TOC Wipes Formatting

2013-08-29 Thread Karen Robbins

Thanks,
Karen

I can second Mike's suggestion to watch RJ's video. I watched it
immediately after upgrading to Frame 9 and it made the paradigm shift
from Frame 7 so much smoother. A lot of people really struggled with
how to manage the pods and panels on the new UI, but RJ made it easy
to understand. Until you understand the power of being able to
customize your UI, you will not be able to take full advantage of the
FM versions that have been released since FM9 plus the other Adobe
products that use that same UI now.

Disappearing Palette Items

2013-08-29 Thread Maxwell Hoffmann
I have not had any menus disappear in the past 18 months, but while working
with FM9 and FM10 while in the translation industry, I did determine one
possible cause of problems. I worked on two screens at home, and had some
saved/named workspaces that had catalogs or palette on my laptop screen, with
main work areas and common menus on my "Cinerama" external monitor.

When I went on the road and used my laptop, I would usually find all floating
palettes and menus would appear over the workspace. If I didn't revise and save
the workspace, when I returned home to two screen, occasionally a pallet would
be in "outer space" ... not visible.

The best cure that I found was to toggle the FrameMaker window from full screen
to smaller, resizable; that always made everything reappear.

For what it's worth, I haven't had any workspace items disappear since I came
to work for Adobe 19 months ago, when I was granted a new Lenovo laptop and
Windows 7. Personally, (we all experience different things), I had more
problems with my older, 2008 laptop running WinXP with all the latest security
updates.

The workspace menu doesn't read "Authoring" unless you have chosen the
Authoring workspace environment. That button "name" just shows what you current

Your palette items are disappearing because you are closing them. Docking them
will retain them, but if you undock them and then close them, they have to
reopened to reappear.

Reading the manual will help you understand how they work and what logic drives
their functioning.

Subject: Re: Disappearing Palette Items

Actually, they disappear IN THE MIDDLE OF WORKING on a single document/book or
multiple documents, not just on close! What a sad state of user interface
affairs FM has fallen into. :-)
I now realize that the "workspace menu" everyone keeps referring to is actually
the button that reads "Authoring"!
And while I can restore most of what I want to be in there, for some reason I
can't get Object Properties back there, it only wants to exist as a
free-standing window/part of the designer (which also won't move into the
docked set). Sigh.
Thanks all,
Karen

Conditional formatting lost when pressing Enter?

2013-08-29 Thread Jaime Zuniga
Hi Everyone,

How do I maintain conditional formatting on text from one paragraph to the next.

For example, if I am typing text in a certain condition and I need to create a
new paragraph in that same condition I want to be able to just press Enter and
keep typing in that same condition. Every time that I press Enter I lose the
conditional formatting in the new paragraph.

I know that I can just select the new paragraph and assign the condition to it
manually, but I want to avoid that extra step, if possible.

Any help would be appreciated.

Jaime
