RE: Generating web pages out of FM

2014-03-12 Thread Reng, Dr. Winfried
Hi,

I also recommend to test the trial version yourself.

I installed it in a virtual machine so that nothing else will be affected.
When I tested the conversion to HTML Help briefly with the default
settings, it worked very well! Very fast. Very convenient! Seamless,
no issues. Many options to configure your conversion.
However, that’s for our documentation. I do not know how yours look
like.

Mif2Go has some options which FrameMaker 12 does not offer
and vice versa. They are different. If you miss anything in FrameMaker 12,
then check out Mif2Go, I will continue using Mif2Go, mainly because I do
not want to configure the FrameMaker conversion.

Best regards

Winfried

Subject: Generating web pages out of FM

A message from a Doubting Thomas: We read Adobe's assertion, that with the
latest version of FM we become able to transform our files directly into
good-looking web pages. However, this isn't the first time the corporation has
claimed this for its product and with earlier versions of FM it simply was not
true. Now the latest version of FM has been available for some months and yet
we haven't seen anyone claim on this discussion list, that this time they have
succeeded.

We're standing by, to purchase a new PC with the latest Microsoft operating
system and such, on which to install this latest FM version. Funding has been
approved and we're ready to go to town! --But, we're hesitant. A scalded dog
runs away from dishwater.

What gives? Has anyone actually done this yet? Has anyone now been able to
directly transform their FM files into good-looking web pages? Can someone
provide the URL for an example of this?

RE: Reworking legacy FrameMaker graphics

2014-03-12 Thread Craig Ede
But you wouldn't be editing screen shots, would you?

For extracting whole graphics like those, it might be better to do a saveAs
HTML and then use the graphics from the images directory. Also, MIF2Go can
export to FM to rtf, which allows you to save from Word to HTML. From there you
can use the PNG generated in the HTML directory graphics folder. For editing
the graphics, this might be slightly helpful in that you could then just PDF
the graphic(s) needed from that directory rather than navigating through the FM
document to find them.

Hi David,

Personally, I highly recommend using FM keyboard shortcuts. This removes the
need to mess up with the FM menu.
For example, to apply a condition to a text string, press Ctrl + 4 or F7 to
open the Condition drop-down menu and select the relevant condition.

In FM10/11 you can't enter (). You get an error about invalid syntax if you do.
So that grouping feature is new in FM12.

We've used build expressions a lot in FM10 and it would've been easier with
grouping!

Something else that may not be obvious: you can combine AND with NOT to give
you ANDNOT functionality. That's very useful.

Another thing is that FM 10/11 do group things, you just have no control over
the grouping. We've got expressions like:

productA andnot internalOnly andnot future or product-family-A andnot
internalOnly andnot future

FM groups this as:

(productA andnot internalOnly andnot future) or (product-family-A andnot
internalOnly andnot future)
not as:

productA andnot internalOnly andnot (future or product-family-A) andnot
internalOnly andnot future

Feel free to ask any other questions, or let me know if you want me to test
anything.

Blank pages

2014-03-12 Thread Pam Harper
I have all of my books set for single-sided with Delete Empty Pages. Lately
extra blank pages are showing on many documents even after I save (which almost
always clears out empty pages) or select Remove Overrides when going from
master view to page view (another reliable way for deleting extra pages). But
they still remain, and I can only get rid of them manually. I use Frame 10 on a
64-bit Windows 7 system. Today I worked on a 100 page file where the document
shrank considerably to about 50 pages. And again, even after saving and
generating the book, the extra pages still remained.
These pages show after the end of the section mark. What could be causing this?

Re: Conditional build expressions?

2014-03-12 Thread Gyanesh Talwar
Scott,

The parenthesis support in conditional build expressions is added in FM 12.

Below is some more content about Conditional Text from the FM 12 What's New.

Hope this helps.

Conditional Tags pod

The new Conditional Tags pod makes it easier for you to create and manage
conditional text settings by providing an improved and unified interface.
You can conveniently create, edit, and delete conditional tags, apply and
show/hide conditional tags, and search for various attributes (for example,
tag name, styles, or color).

See the video: Conditional Tags
Podhttp://www.adobe.com/go/learn_fm12_conditionaltextpod_en
.

Building complex conditional expressions with parenthesis support and UI
guides

FrameMaker now allows you to use parentheses in Boolean condition
expressions. This makes it easy to create complex conditional expressions.

FrameMaker also automatically validates the conditional expressions as you
are building them. The Expression Builder UI highlights errors and provides
you visual cues to identify the various relevant parts, such as conditional
tag names and operators, in the build expressions.

FrameMaker 12 publish feature

I would like to publish some manuals to epub, but I just can't seem to

- all embedded pictures disappear

- tables and the text and pictures in them disappear

There doesn't seem to be any way to handle font settings or character
map settings in the settings dialogue.

Publish to other formats like html etc is only marginally better. Am I
missing something here? The publish features seem rather unfinished to me...

I am still hunting for HunSpell dictionaries in FrameMaker11...

2014-03-12 Thread Simon BUCH

Dear Framers,

I am on the hunt for learning how to integrate HunSpell dictionaries
into FrameMaker 11, for languages such as Icelandic.

According to the FrameMaker 11 Upgrade Guide:
http://wwwimages.adobe.com/www.adobe.com/content/dam/Adobe/en/products/framemaker/pdf/FRAMEMAKER11_UPGRADE_GUIDE.PDF
Hunspell dictionary is available, as is Configurable dictionary support.
I guess these features mean that Adobe provides the dictionaries, and
you can select whether you want to want to use the HunSpell, or the
Proximity version dictionaries.

I took a look at the InDesign help page:
http://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/kb/add_cs_dictionaries.html
and so I created my is_IS folder in:
C:\Program Files\Common
Files\Adobe\Linguistics\6.2\Providers\Plugins2\AdobeHunspellPlugin\Dictionaries\

and in which I copied my is_IS.aff and is_IS.dic files.
I then added the stringis_IS/string text into the Spelling Service
section of the Info.plist file.

Is there anything I'm missing?
or ... */Does anyone know if it is possible to integrate new HunSpell
dictionaries into FrameMaker11?/*

I have received a negative reply, but I haven't tried this myself. Not had

But this should be really easy as in OpenOffice, LibreOffice etc.

Re: FM 12 + RH 11

2014-03-12 Thread Robert Lauriston
What are you using now? An earlier version of FrameMaker?

FM12 basically has most of RoboHelp folded in so you get two for one.

To see what you'd lose with only RoboHelp, generate a PDF from
RoboHelp and compare it with one saved from FrameMaker. Note that
FrameMaker can save PDF with change markup.

You can get free 30-day evaluations so you'd know exactly what you were buying.

Personally I'd use WebHelp on Apache and Google Analytics rather than
RoboHelp Server to avoid having to deal with a Windows server.

with any of these methods in ATCS 5? If so, I'd love to hear about it. Also,
we currently do not have a method for capturing 1) what help pages (this is
not context-sensitive help) users access or 2) whether they are even
accessing the help. It has been suggested that we purchase RH server to
track help file use (vs. using Google analytics). I have used neither. Have
any of you? Suggestions? TIA for any assistance/comments.

  - Page break in paragraph format or as paragraph override, or
  start: top of page setting
  - Master pages set to anything other than Left or Right
  - Pages with graphic objects or text frames outside (or behind)

  - Pages with an extra text frame that overlaps the body text frame

  Blank pages at any position:
  - Manual page break
  - Page break in paragraph format or as paragraph override, or

  - Table or graphic frame anchors (set to 'below current line', if
the table/figure is large enough that the table and anchor, plus
any paragraphs with 'keep with next' settings above the anchor,
  don't fit on the page)
  - tables/graphic frames that are too large to fit on a page
  - Tables with too-greedy Keep with next/previous settings
  - Tables with straddled columns
  - Pages with disconnected text frames (or no body text frame at
  all)

RE: Blank pages

2014-03-12 Thread Fred Ridder
And note that the Next Available option can only be chosen when you are
setting pagination from the *book file* window. FrameMaker keeps separate
file-level pagination properties in each component file and book-level
pagination properties in each book file that use the components. Next
Available has no meaning in the single file context (because there is no
preceding file), so it's not available in the menu.

Another possible cause of Pam's problem is that pages that have no visible
content may not be truly empty from FrameMaker's perspective. For example, any
page that has had a specific non-default master page applied is *not empty*
because it contains a master page specification as a property. Manually placed
frames can also cause problems even if they are empty of any content because
they still exist as objects on the page.

Re: Reworking legacy FrameMaker graphics

2014-03-12 Thread Alan Litchfield
I have done that many times. The vectors and splines created are
sometimes a bit poorly connected but in general, they follow the correct
structure for postscript output.

I have also used this approach on a number of projects to fix MS Word
drawings. That is those that have been made using Word's drawing tools.
So, PDF it then open the page in Illustrator, delete all the rubbish and
fix up the bits that need it.

Hi, Craig.

Yup, I agree with your observation, and do understand the oft-stated
requirement to use PDF output and then print from it. :)

It is just that I was not expecting the poor quality when I printed directly
from FrameMaker to the printer I had access to at the time (I was at home) to
see what the logo looked like.

I had assumed that the EPS would be rasterized (at the resolution of the
specified print quality) when printing to a non-PostScript printer. Like other
programs do with vector images (Visio and Autocad are examples, but there are
plenty of others), including how native drawing objects within FrameMaker are
output.

Although I have many years of experience using FrameMaker, this was the first
time I included an EPS image into a document - normally, I just use
FrameMaker's graphics tools, Visio graphics, and/or bit-map PNG files (for
things like logos), etc. Learning experience for me, I guess ...

We used them for 7+ years. We only switched when my company was purchased and a

Date: Tue, 11 Mar 2014 22:15:28 +

Pam

Re: FM 12 + RH 11

2014-03-12 Thread hessiansx4
Thanks for your comments, which I will share with my team.

In answer to your questions Robert: we have ATCS 5 (FM 12, RH 11) installed.
I'm working on creating a FM template. We currently output to .pdf (from Word -
ugh) and webhelp (from RH). We'd like to output to responsive html 5 and may,
at some future point, need to create a hardcopy-printable document. I don't
foresee the need to move to structured/DITA anytime soon (within the next 5
years) so with the new output for FM, I think that can suffice for now.

FrameMaker Console Window and Font Issue

2014-03-12 Thread George, Brenda (CAI)
I work in an office that uses an automated process to import XML files into
FrameMaker 11. After importing, the files are formatted into FM11 documents. We
are working in a Windows 7 environment.

We recently upgraded the Zapf Dingbats font family to ITC Zapf Dingbats Std
font family.

When I import the xml file, I am receiving the following FrameMaker Console
message:
The Zapfdingbats Font Family is not available.
It will be replaced by Adobe Pi Std.

I was advised to add the following line of code to the maker.ini file:
[UnknownToKnownFontMap]
Zapfdingbats, *,*= ITC Zapf Dingbats Std,*,*

After making this change, when I imported an xml file, the FrameMaker Console
box is displaying the following message:
The Zapfdingbats Font Family is not available.
It will be replaced by ITC Zapf Dingbats Std.

What is causing the FrameMaker Console box to display and how can I fix it so
that this window doesn't display everytime I import? I am working with multiple
templates, EDDs, and Rules files. This message is displaying for all of the
imports that I am performing.

Any assistance with this issue will be appreciated.

Re: FM 12 + RH 11

2014-03-12 Thread Robert Lauriston
As long as you're evaluating alternatives, you should check out
WebWorks ePublisher. It can use Word, FrameMaker, and/or DITA as
source and the output. I haven't looked at its PDF output since my
source was in FrameMaker, but it kicked RoboHelp 10 to the curb as far
as web help.

Depending on whether or not you want a North American-based translation
bureau, I can recommend ADT International out of France
(http://www.adt-international.com/).

We used them for 7+ years. We only switched when my company was purchased
and a sister company in Denmark began handling our translation through their
translation bureau in Greece.

I need to compile a list of recommended localization companies for a client
who is now ready to translate their Framemaker books. I'd like your
recommendations for small- to medium-sized localization companies. Please
email me offlist.

Thanks!
