All,

I reinstalled FM12 and patched it, and inserting a list of imported graphics to
the book now works. Thanks for all of the suggestions.

Thanks for the offer.

I'm wondering if the feature is broken or if I'm not setting it up correctly? I
was certain it worked before, perhaps that was FM9.

You might want to try Rick Quattro's ArchiveES script. It collects all
graphics into their own folder and updates all files in a book to use the
new path.

[Framers] FM12 - List of Imported Graphics != All Files

2018-09-17 Thread cuc tu
Hi All,

I've used to add a list of imported graphics, and then use that write a batch
file to collect all of the files into a single folder, and then update Frame to
use that folder. Now, I am not getting all of the files. It seems like Frame
gets stuck on a single file type, such as Illustrator, and ignores the rest.
Sometimes I get a mix, such as all .ai and one .jpg. That is consistent,
however.

  1. Open book file
  2. Add > List Of > References...
  3. Include References: Imported Graphics
  4. Update book, including all selections
  5. Ta-da - a partial list

Have I forgotten something that will produce a complete list? I am not creating
a list for just the file, since no other files were opened, but I have tried
opening all the files and selecting the book when adding the list, to avoid the
confusing message about adding the list to the book.

FM12 unstructured.

Thanks,

Re: [Framers] Changing Resolution for all imported graphics

2018-09-17 Thread Robert Lauriston
FrameMaker's dpi setting has no effect on the image.

If you have a 300x400 image set to 100 dpi, it will be 3" x 4" on the
page. If you change that to 200 dpi, it will be 1.5" x 2".

Re: [Framers] Changing Resolution for all imported graphics

2018-09-17 Thread Harding, Dan
Keep in mind that scaling raster images to a percentage below 100% in size is
fine, as it increases the effective resolution. On the other hand, scaling a
raster image to 150% is likely to produce blurry results since you are
effectively reducing the resolution of the image. It's usually not recommended.

Upscaling the image in an external graphics program could mitigate this
somewhat if the interpolation algorithms the program uses are good, but you
cannot "create" higher resolution images. They are only as good as they were at
100% of size. A difference of 5-10% in scaling probably wouldn't be noticeable
to the naked eye, but a 50% increase could be nasty. Definitely test this
before you make changes across the board. You may need to go back and create
new screenshots using a higher monitor resolution.

If you increase the resolution in FrameMaker, you will decrease the
dimensions of the image in FrameMaker.

Hi Pat,

My ArchiveES program will take a book and archive all of the FrameMaker files
into a single folder, and the graphics into a Graphics subfolder at the
archived book's folder. Any text insets will be put in a TextInsets subfolder.
It updates all of the internal links for the new locations of the graphics and

In your scenario, you would want to let ArchiveES actually copy the FrameMaker

Subject: [Framers] Pull imported graphics into one folder

Hi -

I need to consolidate several manuals, each of which has many imported graphics
that are in a folder in the manual's folder. Once I've brought all the
non-image material together into a folder, is there a way to copy images from
their original location into the new folder? I had hopes Package might do it
but it skips graphics that aren't already in the folder.

The images still display in the new combined manual but our directories are
rather messy, with people tending to rename folders and I have no faith that
those links will remain valid indefinitely.

I've already been shot down on using copied instead of imported images because
there is a lot of consolidation to be done, so please don't suggest that.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I'm using FrameMaker 2017 on Windows 7.

[Framers] Default for imported graphics

2016-09-20 Thread Pat Christenson
FrameMaker 12, unstructured

Does anyone if there's a way to change the dpi options in the Import Graphic
Scaling dialog? I rarely use the ones that are there and would like change them
to ones I actually use.

Is there a way to add a 1-pt black border to a graphic as part of the import
(i.e, set a default property that is applied upon import)?

No FrameScript, please, my company won't pay for it.

Thanks.

Configuration control for imported Graphics

2013-01-02 Thread Chris Coggins
Can anyone offer suggestions for tight configuration control over graphics
that are imported into framemaker documents? We're actually embedding
images into the documents because we are unable to link by reference due to
Sharepoint limitations. Right now we're manually checking for current
graphics using file dates, but it's a burdensome extra step that sometimes
gets overlooked when publishing books on a tight deadline, which sometimes
results in older graphics in the compiled books.

The graphics are all stored in individual folders on the server for
graphics control issues, rather than in one folder for all graphics.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks,
Chris

Question:

I have a bunch of FrameMaker files with embedded graphics that have been
converted from MS Word. Because all those embedded screen shots make
for one gangly file, I'd like to be able to extract these graphics and
have them as referenced files. Is there an easy way to do this
(preferably all at once)?

Question:

Hi all,

We're using Frame 10 and doing unstructured books.

We have source files out on a network drive, but we do often copy the
files to our local machines so that we can work remotely and offline on
them.

So now I have a book out on the network drive that somehow is
referencing images on c:\dic\mybook\userguide\images\button.jpg instead
of \images\button.jpg. A similar thing has happened to some of the
x-refs in 3 of the chapters. We are getting specific references instead
of relative references.

Does anyone have any suggestions why this behavior is happening? or how
to fix it without having to open each chapter file and repoint the
graphic directory?

I think I'm most conserned about understanding why it is happening, so
that I can tell our team how to avoid this problem.

thanks,

meg

Subject: hard coded path names for imported graphics and x-refs

Hi all,

We're using Frame 10 and doing unstructured books.

We have source files out on a network drive, but we do often copy the files to
our local machines so that we can work remotely and offline on them.

So now I have a book out on the network drive that somehow is referencing
images on c:\dic\mybook\userguide\images\button.jpg instead of
\images\button.jpg. A similar thing has happened to some of the x-refs in 3 of
the chapters. We are getting specific references instead of relative
references.

Does anyone have any suggestions why this behavior is happening? or how to fix
it without having to open each chapter file and repoint the graphic directory?

I think I'm most conserned about understanding why it is happening, so that I
can tell our team how to avoid this problem.

thanks,
meg

Hi Meg,

There are two ways that this can happen:

1) You import images from another drive or network volume; this is unlikely
in your case.

2) You Save As the FrameMaker document from one drive or volume to another.
This will create absolute paths to the graphics. This may be what happened
to you.

Please let me know if you have any questions or comments. Thank you very
much.

From my experiences, Meg, and from what other people have told me, FrameMaker
will create absolute paths when you work on a remote drive.

Is using source control software an option for you for sharing files with other

Re: hard coded path names for imported graphics and x-refs

2012-02-16 Thread David Spreadbury
Miranda,
Why it is happening is probably because some of the images weren't replaced
with the new pointers.

The good thing is it's an easy fix (the following works with Frame 7.2, so I am
guessing that it will work with Frame 10).

1. Make sure the network images folder contains ALL of the images.
2. Make sure the local path doesn't exist. If the folder is still there, change
the folder name, or delete it. The safe way is to rename it. This way Frame
can't automatically find the folder, and if an image is missing from the
network folder you can manually copy it out to the network folder.
3. Open the book file, select all of the chapters, and press Enter to open all
chapters.
4. At the first missing image file, redirect it to the network folder. That
chapter, and all remaining chapters, that have incorrect image folder links
should automatically readjust to the network images folder.

Imported Graphics

I have several small graphics that I need to send to a client. However, I
imported them directly into the FM document instead of importing by reference
(a mistake made way back when). Now I need to send copies of these graphics to
the client. Most are in TIFF format.

How do I/Can I extract them from the FM document?

update imported graphics - scripting/addon solution ?

2007-08-21 Thread Studio Smalbro
I need to check some thousand framemaker files for newer versions of
imported graphics. Each framemaker file has one imported graphic and each
framemaker file bears the name of that imported graphic. The graphics are
named consecutively, so that if a newer version exists it is named with a
higher number. I would like to be able to find some elegant way of checking
these files for newer graphics. Is there a plugin that would facilitate this
work or might it be done using scripting ?

Best regards
Bjørn

I'm pretty sure that such a plugin does not exist. I'd be glad to make
one for you that does, or you could certainly create a script to do this

List of imported graphics

2007-06-09 Thread frameus...@systec-gmbh.com

You could get a list of imported graphics, referenced text insets and
chapters in a book.
That is possible in a document, in a book with chapters and in a book with
books.

Take TOOLBOX for FrameMaker: Tool "Book Transfer" create a list before you
can transfer the book.

My apologies in advance - I know that this has been discussed before on

for a Frame book that contains not only all of the graphics that are
imported by reference into the various book files, but also, a bunch of
graphic that I don't need to use anymore, that are outdated and/or
incorrect graphics and so on. Before I check all of my folders into
ClearCase, I want to delete these junk graphics that are just taking
up space. How do I go about generating a list of what graphics are
actually used where in the book. (I obviously want to compare this list
to the actual directory contents and nuke those from the directory that
don't appear on the list.) If I had only a small amount of graphics, I
could do this manually, but I have over several hundred graphics (it's a
BIG book), so . . .

Re: List of imported graphics

2007-06-01 Thread Rene Stephenson
If you do an Index of References for the book and select imported graphics,
you'll get an alphabetized list of each imported graphic and where it's used.

However, we have found it more expedient to use Bruce Foster's Archive plugin.

Re: List of imported graphics

2007-06-01 Thread Yves Barbion
I use Bruce Foster's Archive plug-in for this purpose
(http://home.comcast.net/~bruce.foster/Archive.htm):

  1. Archive my Frame book to a different (target) folder.
  2. Delete all the graphics in the source folder.
  3. Move the target folder back to the source.

Works great, but you need to be careful when you have several books in
several folders which use common graphics.

To compare the list with the directory contents, you need it in
alphabetical order. So you don't want a list, but an index. From the
book window, select Add Index of References, and in the dialog,
select Imported Graphics.

Re: List of imported graphics

We still include the Index of References before using the archive plugin, so
that you can tell at a glance if the graphic was originally a shared graphic
with some other project... due to the way we've named our shared folders. We
don't keep the IOR in the book file, but we do keep it in the project folder
and include it with the archive.

If you do an Index of References for the book and select imported graphics,
you'll get an alphabetized list of each imported graphic and where it's used.

However, we have found it more expedient to use Bruce Foster's Archive plugin.

Aligning Imported Graphics and Callouts Against the Grid

2007-05-18 Thread Pinkham, Jim
I'm using FM 7.1p116 and Illustrator 9.0. It would seem that there
should be a way to get beyond/behind the standard white background of an
imported Illy file to show only the image. I'm not sure if the problem
of the white canvas obscuring the gridlines is an Illy problem/feature
or on the Frame side. In any case, the goal would be to take advantage
of the gridlines to position and align callouts. I suspect I'm missing
something obvious. What I see today is shown at:
http://www.yourfilelink.com/get.php?fid=332480. Any suggestions as to
what to do?

Thanks,
Jim

It's not an Illustrator 'feature' -- it's just that Frame doesn't
support transparency. But read the Help entry on Using Grids. You'll
find that if you set the visible grid lines and the (snap) grid spacing
to the same value, and turn on Graphics Snap, your callouts will
snap-align to the grid even though you can't see the grid lines behind
the white background. (In fact, you can just use the snap feature and
turn off the visible grid lines, for a much less cluttered view.)

Re: Aligning Imported Graphics and Callouts Against the Grid

2007-05-18 Thread Peter Gold

Hi, Jim:

I forgot one important thing:

Sometimes the Fill None method doesn't seem to enable
transparency on screen in FrameMaker, but it does enable it in
printing to paper, or converting to PDF by Save As, or
printing to a PostScript file and distilling it. If you
haven't tried these output steps, there's still a chance.

Aligning Imported Graphics and Callouts Against the Grid

2007-05-18 Thread Pinkham, Jim
I'm using FM 7.1p116 and Illustrator 9.0. It would seem that there
should be a way to get beyond/behind the standard white background of an
imported Illy file to show only the image. I'm not sure if the problem
of the white canvas obscuring the gridlines is an Illy problem/feature
or on the Frame side. In any case, the goal would be to take advantage
of the gridlines to position and align callouts. I suspect I'm missing
something obvious. What I see today is shown at:
http://www.yourfilelink.com/get.php?fid=332480. Any suggestions as to
what to do?

Thanks,
Jim

It's not an Illustrator 'feature' -- it's just that Frame doesn't
support transparency. But read the Help entry on Using Grids. You'll
find that if you set the visible grid lines and the (snap) grid spacing
to the same value, and turn on Graphics > Snap, your callouts will
snap-align to the grid even though you can't see the grid lines behind
the white background. (In fact, you can just use the snap feature and
turn off the visible grid lines, for a much less cluttered view.)

Thanks, Stuart. I'm working with this, and I think it will prove
helpful.

P.S. -- It would be great if Frame *did* support transparency.

Jim, have you tried selecting the graphic in FrameMaker, and
then in Graphics > Tools, choosing Fill > None? Sometimes this
enables transparency in an imported graphic. Worth a try. Let
us know how it works for you.

I checked and had Fill defaulted to None. Thanks for the suggestion,

Aligning Imported Graphics and Callouts Against the Grid

2007-05-18 Thread Peter Gold
Hi, Jim:

I forgot one important thing:

Sometimes the Fill > None method doesn't seem to enable
transparency on screen in FrameMaker, but it does enable it in
printing to paper, or converting to PDF by Save As, or
printing to a PostScript file and distilling it. If you
haven't tried these output steps, there's still a chance.

Filters for imported graphics

2007-03-28 Thread Menahem Rosen
I recently sent a set of book files to a colleague in Denmark, who
reports that she gets the following message when she opens a file in the
book:

At least one original filter used for graphics imported by reference is
not available, or the imported file's format has changed. An alternative
filter may be used if the file is recognized as a graphic FrameMaker can
import

What/where is the problem? What's the solution?

TIA,

Filters for imported graphics - cont.

2007-03-28 Thread Menahem Rosen
Just after posting the original message, I got an e-mail from the Danish
colleague. The problem seems to be with a wmf graphic file:

I cannot save it on my computer...When I right-click at the link and
try to click at save target as it tells me that my Logon is
refused... When I...left-click...the link I can open the file and see
the picture...

The simple solution is to convert the file to another format. But since
I already posted the question, can anybody offer an explanation?

This is quite a common message when a FrameMaker document goes cross-platform,
as for example Windows and Mac FrameMaker installations have different
populations of graphic import filters. For example, FrameMaker for Windows can
open .bmp files, while FrameMaker for Mac cannot. There are Unix examples too,
as I remember.

You can find information about this is FrameMaker's online guide 'Working on
multiple platforms'.

I cannot shad any light on the specifics of the WMF issue, but other may be
able to.

Tip for loading remote imported graphics quicker

2007-02-02 Thread James Dyson
Here's a tip for anyone in my situation. Hope this helps other out
there.

Problem: My graphics are imported and stored another server, while frame
is on another PC. As a result, the loading time for graphics is
wretched, and each page in the document with a graphic in it would cause
the hourglass to appear, and each page would take a bit to load.

Solution: Since putting frame and the graphics on the same computer is
not an option, I found the next best thing is to:

1. Open the book.
2. Open each file in the book.
3. Select Print Book
4. Select Print to File
5. Create a file (that lives until the book is completed) called
delete_me.ps
6. Select Print.
7. Get some coffee - and the result is that it accomplishes the loading
of all of the graphics in the entire book, removing delays when
scrolling pages.

If there is a better way, let me know. But this is a significant
improvement for me - and hopefully for others in my situation.

Your solution of printing the book to a junk file sounds workable.

Don't forget though, that if your document has reached the stage where
you're not actually working with the graphics themselves, you can simply
turn off the display of graphics (View > Options > Graphics). You'll see
the anchored frames' borders (if view borders is enabled), but there's
no loading of remote files at all.

Re: Imported graphics not exporting to XML: update

What can cause the message:

'Cannot export graphics or equation contents. Check the element mapping and

and failure to export graphics with XML export?

I am exporting to XML without a structured application in place, as this is
one-way only. (Maybe not a great idea?) The documents are all valid, and the
exported XML looks ok, but as far as I can see none of the imported graphics
files are exported. The majority of imported graphics are EPS format.

After half a day of documentation thrashing and cerebral overload, I think I
now know part of the reason for this: I should have included a filepath
attribute in the EDD for imported graphics. Adding one at least gets a file id
into the XML... even though I still get the error. Grrr.

Another possible problem is that the Structured Developer's Guide lists 'EPSB',
'EPSD', 'EPSF' and 'EPSI' as exportable, but not plain old 'EPS'. We are
working with EPSs from Adobe Illustrator.

I've also encountered an issue with element naming: we used the bullet
character to distinguish top-level elements, as in 'Chapter*', and FrameMaker
doesn't seem to like this, and appears to be reading the element name only to
the character immediately preceding the bullet. Maybe it's because bullet isn't
allowed in XML?

Onwards and upwards...
