RE: FrameMaker 9: Dialogues sizes

2009-03-26 Thread Jeff Coatsworth
Hi Hedley,

Since I don't have any experience with prior versions of FM, I can't
comment on the (a) bigger question, but in using FM9, they're (b) not
resizable - I find on one of my monitors running at 1280x1024, the fonts
are really small in the Marker Text entry screens.

I haven't trialled FM9 yet, but if the various tiny dialogue windows are
now (a) bigger and (b) resizable, those would be immense improvements.

Anyway/tool to update cross-ref defs easily

2009-03-26 Thread Kanti . Mann
Hello:

I'm about to update templates to use simple, sequential page numbering,
rather than chapter-pagenum in our books.

Of course, that's a number of definitional updates, one of which I so
dislike is the cross-ref formats.

Is there any tool (such as IXgen for index markers) or tricak that will
let me see cross-ref formats more easily (other than MIF)???

Like the new features (without the bugs would be better), one thing I
haven't mentioned the product should have a way and time to empty it's
temp file like right after you close a document.

It is r r e a ly slow loading the program even after you empty the
temp file - and wouldn't mind so much but a bouncing FM9 or a loading
bar or something should let you know the program is on it's way in.

Adobe Techs have been great in trying to address the issues especially
the features the patch broke.

Harder to work in FM9 when you don't have 2 screens.

Re: Anyway/tool to update cross-ref defs easily

2009-03-26 Thread Peter Gold
Hi, Kanti:

* Depending on how you've defined the cross-reference formats to
capture the compound chapter-page numbers, you may find that modifying
the cross-reference formats and importing them across your books
works. (Back-up all files before experimenting.)

* markerworker is a free FM plug-in that might work for you. It's not
been updated in a long time, so it may not work with FM 8 or 9.

Find it at: http://www.freeframers.org/freeware/cud/

Hmm...might I detect a note of teasing here? Or perhaps it's mild
aggravation at an imprecise question. Either way, yes, it's a vague
question, so I'll defer an exhaustive answer for the moment.

I've been using FM 9, as part of TCS 2, for about two weeks. I've run
into a few ultimately minor bugs and annoyances; good, prompt help from
Adobe; plug-ins carrying over quite well; good FM integration with the
rest of the suite; and an interface that I find more efficient and
productive than FM 7p1. We haven't made any corporate decisions yet, but
at this point, I like the new version a lot and don't want to go back.

If you're looking for a general, bottom-line assessment, that's it for
me. If you have specific questions, spell them out and those of us on
the list will try to help.

Hi Oran,

Regarding your points,

1. I cannot get the Paragraph Formatting tool bar Tab icons to work. On
earlier versions I could drag them onto the ruler to add new tabs. While
I can move existing tabs on the ruler, I cannot seem to add new with the
icons. The tab icons seem inoperative, as I cannot make to do anything
through dragging, double-click, etc. I do see the New Tab Stop text in
the paragraph designer flicker when I click an icon, but nothing else
happens .

Megha To add a tab stop, click a tab stop symbol from Paragraph Format
toolbar and click the desired position below the top ruler. Refer to
FrameMaker 9 user guide , page 43.

FrameMaker 9 Welcome Screen

2009-03-26 Thread Corcoran, Susan
I've just recently loaded TCS 2 and gotten a good look at FM9. I really
like the new interface, even though it is different. I especially like
the ability to customize it and save workspace versions. However, I've
found the Welcome Screen to be *really* annoying. Usually, welcome
screens disappear once an app is running, but this thing remains. I
realize it offers some shortcuts (and a lot of Adobe marketing links),
but I can get those from my menus, just like any other Adobe
application. I wonder why Adobe did this with Framemaker, when none of
their other applications behave this way. Does anyone else dislike the
welcome screen?

Re: FrameMaker 9 Welcome Screen

2009-03-26 Thread Yves Barbion
Hi Susan

I don't like the welcome screen either. If someone knows how to tweak some
cfg or ini file to get rid of it, i'd be grateful if they could share it
with us.

Thanks.

2009-03-26 Thread Kevin Hunter
Hi everyone,

[Sent this yesterday from Thunderbird where it went through blank...]

I'm at frame 7.0p578 and I'm having an issue with numbered lists and text
flows.

I have a document with two flows, A B, in parallel on a page. In flow A,
my numbered lists sequence fine. It is set to AutoConnect. With flow B,
which appears to be identically set up, my numbered lists restart on every
page. I've tried adjusting the master page, the frames individually,
auto-connect on and off, and nothing seems to work. From the guide and a few
pages out there on Google, it would appear that those are the only variables
I should have to worry about.

Any and all suggestions are appreciated!

thanks,

SalesForce knowledgebase?

2009-03-26 Thread John Sgammato
Does anyone have experience porting FrameMaker procedures (or online
help procedures) into a SalesForce knowledgebase?
I am considering a switch to Structured FrameMaker 8/DITA and I wonder
if one of my benefits will be the ability to port individual procedures
into a knowledgebase (or even a MySQL database) for access by customers.
Our current knowledgebase includes only customized procedures, but it
would help Support if all my known-good, reviewed, edited procedures
were in there for them to use as-is or as a basis for customization.

FDK - reading single lines of text from a MIF file

2009-03-26 Thread CSMonck
Hello !

I am new to this list and I hope someone can help me with a question about
the FrameMaker Development Kit (FDK).

I am using the FDK to write a DLL which processes MIF files. I am familiar
with the FDK read and write commmands, F_ChannelRead and F_ChannelWrite,
but what I want to do is to read single lines from the MIF files in the same
way that commands such as fgets and fputs work in standard C. From the
tests I have done it seems that F_ChannelRead and F_ChannelWrite only
operate
on blocks of memory/text of a specified size.

I have got my DLL working using fopen and fclose to open and close files
and fgets and fputs to read and write lines of text from and to files, but
I understand that these commands are deprecated in FDK-land.

Can anyone help, please?

Thank you,
Charlie

Linking Master Pages to A Pgf Tag in an Anchored Frame

2009-03-26 Thread Jona Steenbrink
Frame 8.0
Win XP

I was wondering if it is possible to link a Master Page to a paragraph
tag that appears inside an anchored frame.

What I need to do is the following.

I've created a large graphic (7.5x10) contained within an anchored
frame.
The frame is anchored in a body paragraph with the settings below
current line and floating so that it appears on the next available
page and takes up the entire page.
I've put some text in a Text Frame, inside the anchored frame and
applied a pgf tag imaginatively called FullSizedGraphic.
I've created a master page called FullSizedGraphic with a colored
background and linked it to the FullSizedGraphic pgf tag in the Master
Page mapping table.
I select Apply Master Pages and all other Master Pages are applied,
except for the one I went to all of that effort to create.

Is it simply the case that Frame doesn't read pgf tags in an anchored
frame? If so, can anyone think of an alternative way of doing this? I
could anchor the frame to a custom pgf tag on its own page, but I want
the graphic to float.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Jona

 Does anyone else dislike the welcome screen?

It seemed a little odd at first, but as soon as I open a non-book file, the
welcome screen disappears. It 's actually handy to have the recent file list

RE: FrameMaker 9

2009-03-26 Thread RJ Jacquez
Hi Pat, something else you may want to take a look at is an eLearning session I
did a couple weeks ago on how to get the most out of the new User Interface in
FrameMaker 9. Many Frame users have found it useful as they look at the new
features in fm9, and here's the link to the recording:
http://my.adobe.acrobat.com/p17912987/

I'm also working on some of the features that Sheila mentioned in the review
below, which are actually there, like the ability to replace missing fonts and
how the Start Meeting works in both FrameMaker 9 and RoboHelp 8 through
Acrobat.com and will post a few short Captivate movies on how exactly these
features work, just to make sure these are clear to anyone interested in
looking at the new version of Frame.

In addition, I will be hosting an eLearning session on exactly how the Import
PDF comments work, probably after I return from WritersUA, keep an eye on my
blog for an announcement.

A couple more things regarding the review, on page 5, there's a mention of how
to get back to the book view of a DITAMap file and the correct way of doing
this is through Window Composite Documents.

Also, on Page 3, there's a mention of a bug regarding the Ctrl+F8, F9, which
was addressed in the recent patch we released, so now you can apply paragraph
and character styles using the above keyboard shortcuts and F8 and F9, too.

Furthermore throughout the review, there are mentions about how to reset
workspaces and other issues with the new user interface, and again if you want
to know more about this, please check out the link above which goes through the
entire process.

Re: font changes in ini

2009-03-26 Thread Mike Wickham
Finding the correct font name is sometimes difficult, but making the entries
in maker.ini is easy. These two sets of instructions are embedded in
maker.ini:

[WindowsToFrameFontAliases]
;
; This section gives the Frame font name for a Windows font.
; The format is Windows_Font=Frame_Font
; Note this is the only place in maker.ini which refers to Windows fonts.
; All other maker.ini font entries refer to the FrameFont.
;
; The format is (on a single line):
;
;  A_WINDOWS_FONT_NAME,[Italic | Regular |*],[A_WEIGHT |*]=
;  A_FRAME_FONT_NAME, [ AN_ANGLE | * ], [ A_WEIGHT | * ],
;   [ A_VARIATION | * ]
;
; A_WINDOWS_FONT_NAME=a valid windows font face as it appears in other
;  Windows applications.
;
; A_FRAME_FONT_NAME=anything, but generally it is chosen to have
;Frame cross-platform compatibility.
;
;  A_WEIGHT=Defined above as Weights=
;
;  AN_ANGLE=Defined above as Angles=
;
;  A_VARIATION=Defined above as Variations=
;
; In the absence of an alias, the default aliasing is always applied,
; it can be written:
; Windows Family Name, *, *=Windows Family Name, *, *, *
;
; The following are example of entries:
;
; Helvetica, Italic, *=Helvetica, Oblique, *, Regular
; HelveticaNarrow, *, *=Helvetica, * , * , Narrow
; HelveticaNarrow,Italic, *=Helvetica, Oblique, *, Narrow
;

[UnknownToKnownFontMap]
;
; This section is for mapping unavailable fonts when reading a document.
; The format is:Frame Font Unavailable=Frame Font Available
;
; The format for a Frame Font is (on one line):
;
;  A_FRAME_FONT_NAME, [AN_ANGLE | WILDCARD],[A_WEIGHT | WILDCARD],
;   [A_VARIATION | WILDCARD]

RE: FrameMaker 9 Welcome Screen

2009-03-26 Thread RJ Jacquez
One of the drivers behind our decision for the Welcome Screen in FM9 came from
new users' feedback, who found themselves launching FrameMaker to a blank
screen and didn't know exactly where to start.

However I do agree that there should be a preference somewhere for turning it
off for more seasoned users, but like Mike, I find it extremely usefully for
displaying my recent files as soon as I launch the product.

The good news is that for those of you, who find it odd, it goes away as soon
as you open a frame doc.

Re: FrameMaker 9: Dialogues sizes

2009-03-26 Thread Mike Wickham
 I haven't trialled FM9 yet, but if the various tiny dialogue windows are
 now (a) bigger and (b) resizable, those would be immense improvements.

Some are resizable, such as Add/Edit Condition Tag. They have enlarged many
of the fields in the various panels. It's definitely an improvement.

Anyway/tool to update cross-ref defs easily

Like the new features (without the bugs would be better), one thing I
haven't mentioned the product should have a way and time to empty it's
temp file like right after you close a document.

It is r r e a ly slow loading the program even after you empty the
temp file - and wouldn't mind so much but a bouncing FM9 or a loading
bar or something should let you know the program is on it's way in.

Adobe Techs have been great in trying to address the issues especially
the features the patch broke.

Harder to work in FM9 when you don't have 2 screens.

Anyway/tool to update cross-ref defs easily

2009-03-26 Thread Peter Gold
Hi, Kanti:

* Depending on how you've defined the cross-reference formats to
capture the compound chapter-page numbers, you may find that modifying
the cross-reference formats and importing them across your books
works. (Back-up all files before experimenting.)

* markerworker is a free FM plug-in that might work for you. It's not
been updated in a long time, so it may not work with FM 8 or 9.

Find it at: http://www.freeframers.org/freeware/cud/

Is there a way to print the structured view of a file in Frame 8? I
would like to print this particular view to use as a sample of the

not just a few screen captures.

I do see the "New Tab Stop" text in
the paragraph designer flicker when I click an icon, but nothing else
happens .

 To add a tab stop, click a tab stop symbol from Paragraph Format
toolbar and click the desired position below the top ruler. Refer to
FrameMaker 9 user guide , page 43.

2. If I use the "Screen Mode" icon to select? "Full Screen Mode" the
menus correctly

I know you can hold down Alt Gr and click to follow a link, but I can't

shortcut for this?

I'm on FM 7.1 on Windows XP.

Just to clarify a bit, this is three keystrokes *in sequence*, not in

combination (i.e. simultaneous) as some might infer from the + signs.

Also the v is lower-case and the P is upper-case (Shift+P); yes, case

*does* matter in FrameMaker's escape-key shortcut codes.

2009-03-26 Thread Kevin Hunter
Hi everyone,

[Sent this yesterday from Thunderbird where it went through blank...]

I'm at frame 7.0p578 and I'm having an issue with numbered lists and text
flows.

I have a document with two flows, A & B, in parallel on a page. In flow A,
my numbered lists sequence fine.

2009-03-26 Thread csmo...@aol.com
Hello !

I am new to this list and I hope someone can help me with a question about
the FrameMaker Development Kit (FDK).

I am using the FDK to write a DLL which processes MIF files. I am familiar
with the FDK read and write commmands, "F_ChannelRead" and "F_ChannelWrite",
but what I want to do is to read single lines from the MIF files in the same
way that commands such as "fgets" and "fputs" work in standard "C". From the
tests I have done it seems that "F_ChannelRead" and "F_ChannelWrite" only
operate
on blocks of memory/text of a specified size.

I have got my DLL working using "fopen" and "fclose" to open and close files
and "fgets" and "fputs" to read and write lines of text from and to files, but
I understand that these commands are deprecated in "FDK-land".

I've created a large graphic (7.5x10) contained within an anchored
frame.
The frame is anchored in a body paragraph with the settings "below
current line" and "floating" so that it appears on the next available
page and takes up the entire page.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Jona

FrameMaker 9 Welcome Screen

2009-03-26 Thread Mike Wickham
> Does anyone else dislike the welcome screen?

It seemed a little odd at first, but as soon as I open a non-book file, the
welcome screen disappears. It 's actually handy to have the recent file list
there. So I've grown to like it.

FrameMaker 9

2009-03-26 Thread RJ Jacquez
Hi Pat, something else you may want to take a look at is an eLearning session I
did a couple weeks ago on how to get the most out of the new User Interface in
FrameMaker 9. Many Frame users have found it useful as they look at the new
features in fm9, and here's the link to the recording:
http://my.adobe.acrobat.com/p17912987/

I'm also working on some of the features that Sheila mentioned in the review
below, which are actually there, like the ability to replace missing fonts and
how the "Start Meeting" works in both FrameMaker 9 and RoboHelp 8 through
Acrobat.com and will post a few short Captivate movies on how exactly these
features work, just to make sure these are clear to anyone interested in
looking at the new version of Frame.

In addition, I will be hosting an eLearning session on exactly how the Import
PDF comments work, probably after I return from WritersUA, keep an eye on my
blog for an announcement.

A couple more things regarding the review, on page 5, there's a mention of how
to get back to the book view of a DITAMap file and the correct way of doing
this is through Window > Composite Documents.

Also, on Page 3, there's a mention of a bug regarding the Ctrl+F8, F9, which
was addressed in the recent patch we released, so now you can apply paragraph
and character styles using the above keyboard shortcuts and F8 and F9, too.

Furthermore throughout the review, there are mentions about how to reset
workspaces and other issues with the new user interface, and again if you want
to know more about this, please check out the link above which goes through the
entire process.

font changes in ini

2009-03-26 Thread Mike Wickham
Finding the correct font name is sometimes difficult, but making the entries
in maker.ini is easy. These two sets of instructions are embedded in
maker.ini:

[WindowsToFrameFontAliases]
;
; This section gives the Frame font name for a Windows font.
; The format is Windows_Font=Frame_Font
; Note this is the only place in maker.ini which refers to Windows fonts.
; All other maker.ini font entries refer to the FrameFont.
;
; The format is (on a single line):
;
;  A_WINDOWS_FONT_NAME,[Italic | Regular |*],[A_WEIGHT |*]=
;  A_FRAME_FONT_NAME, [ AN_ANGLE | * ], [ A_WEIGHT | * ],
;   [ A_VARIATION | * ]
;
; A_WINDOWS_FONT_NAME=a valid windows font face as it appears in other
;  Windows applications.
;
; A_FRAME_FONT_NAME=anything, but generally it is chosen to have
;Frame cross-platform compatibility.
;
;  A_WEIGHT=Defined above as Weights=
;
;  AN_ANGLE=Defined above as Angles=
;
;  A_VARIATION=Defined above as Variations=
;
; In the absence of an alias, the default aliasing is always applied,
; it can be written:
; Windows Family Name, *, *=Windows Family Name, *, *, *
;
; The following are example of entries:
;
; Helvetica, Italic, *=Helvetica, Oblique, *, Regular
; HelveticaNarrow, *, *=Helvetica, * , * , Narrow
; HelveticaNarrow,Italic, *=Helvetica, Oblique, *, Narrow
;

[UnknownToKnownFontMap]
;
; This section is for mapping unavailable fonts when reading a document.
; The format is:Frame Font Unavailable=Frame Font Available
;
; The format for a Frame Font is (on one line):
;
;  A_FRAME_FONT_NAME, [AN_ANGLE | WILDCARD],[A_WEIGHT | WILDCARD],
;   [A_VARIATION | WILDCARD]
;
; When no mapping is provided the defaults are used in the
;  Default section of [Fonts]
;
;  Examples:
;Lumina,*,*,*=Helvetica, *, *, *
;Helvetica,*,Light,*=Helvetica,*,Regular,*
;Helvetica,*,*,UltraCompressed=Helvetica, *, *, Narrow
;

FrameMaker 9 Welcome Screen

2009-03-26 Thread RJ Jacquez
One of the drivers behind our decision for the Welcome Screen in FM9 came from
new users' feedback, who found themselves launching FrameMaker to a blank
screen and didn't know exactly where to start.

However I do agree that there should be a preference somewhere for turning it
off for more seasoned users, but like Mike, I find it extremely usefully for
displaying my recent files as soon as I launch the product.

The good news is that for those of you, who find it odd, it goes away as soon
as you open a frame doc.
