Also go to about:config and search for gfx. Set the property gfx.direct2d.disabled to true. Bounce the browser and go to about:support. How about installing Firebug and see in the Net tab that what precisely is happening when you load the Twitter main page? Is it waiting for apparently no reason at a particular place? Also, not strictly required, but can you also pass the traffic through something like LiveHTTPHeaders and post a traffic dump? That is kind of odd. But I am assuming you figured out what the precise problem is. What worries me more is the the fact that a process ignores kill -9. Doesn't it indicate a problem with the OS? I think potentially this is a security vulnerability. No not really. There are instances when a process can ignore SIGKILL or kill -9 as colloquially stated. For example, when a process in in the state of an uninterruptible sleep, marked as D in the top output, it will ignore all signals. Similarly for processes which are zombies, showing up as Z in the top output, will ignore the SIGKILL as well. Ideally, if you think you are hitting on a case where the process is not an uninterruptible state and still refuses to listen to SIGKILL, you should attach a strace or dtrace session to the process and see what is going on. In FreeBSD 9 the fragment size increased, halving the default number of inodes. With only 32k inodes it's possible to run out with portsnap alone. You can probably get away with the old default of 64k (-i 8192), or perhaps 128k (-i 4096). Check how many files you have outside of portsnap and do the arithmetic. Or, move the portsnap tree to somewhere other than /var (see /etc/portsnap.conf for that such). I think that a file-backed md* mounted only when portsnap was in use would save on inodes, yeah? Actually I think that is a very good idea. That is how I have set up my system as well with one difference. I have tons of memory and use a memory based filesystem to store all the in-compile objects. -- Subhro Sankha Kar System Administrator Working and Playing with FreeBSD since 2002___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to freebsd-questions-unsubscr...@freebsd.org

So,how can I get access to csh for root without having access to a root shell(the previously defined bash does not work, and I need root access to change the shell for the root acount). if you haven't activated the 'toor' account (another UID 0 account besides root), you'll have to boot from fixit media (or another live cd / system) and go from there. I think that would be an overkill. From the su(1) manpage, -m Leave the environment unmodified. The invoked shell is your login shell, and no directory changes are made. As a security precaution, if the target user's shell is a non-standard shell (as defined by getusershell(3)) and the caller's real uid is non- zero, su will fail. So, you could use su -m to switch to root and remain in the same shell as your user calling su. Once there, AFAIK, you could use vipw(8) or chsh(1) to change the root shell back to csh. Re: FreeBSD support for HP DL180/G5
HP produces pretty good boxes and historically I have been able to get them working without any troubles. However I would say DL180 is a pretty non customizable box. The hardware works perfectly with FreeBSD 7.0. I didnt try it with 6.3, so cant comment on that. However I would say DL380 is a better off. The main advantage of DL3xx boxes are there is a lot of room to play with add-on cards. Also not all the latest and greatest processors are available with DL1xx family of servers. Also make sure that you go for an external RAID controller like 3ware or Areca. I prefer Areca more :-D. The HP RAID controller cant take the beating I give to it. Re: Network, routers, DHCP and PXE
Just to add to that suggestion, if you have a separate DHCP server, make sure your router works as a DHCP client for the internal network as well. You should be able to do that by telnetting into the management port. You may use a serial cable as well. This is required in order to get the NAT working properly. Thanks Subhro On Mon, Jul 28, 2008 at 1:18 PM, Manolis Kiagias [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Svein Halvor Halvorsen wrote: Hi, list! I have a private home network, on an ADSL2+ connection to the internet. The home network is behind NAT, all automatically set up by the router/dhcp server/wlan access point/adsl modem that I got from my ISP. It's a Thomson SpeedTouch 585 router. Now, on this network, most of the computers get their IP by means of DHCP. Except our home audio server, which have a hard coded ip address in rc.conf, set to something within the range of the dhcp server (10.0.0.2-10.0.0.253). The server seems to pick this up, and don't give that address away to someone else. You may also want to ensure that the router will never allocate your static IP address to someone else. Look at the DHCP router settings either for DHCP scope (set it to narrower values, and use a static IP outside the range) or for something like exceptions / exclusion where you can mark a specific IP that DHCP will never assign. I've tried using other addresses outside this range, like 10.0.1.1, but that doesn't work. All network access is lost when I do that. 10.0.1.1 is a different network (I assume your netmask is 255.255.255.0, but check your router or your clients) Now, on my local network I'd like to put a diskless machine. As I understand it, my DHCP server needs to tell the client about the filename and a next-server to use. I don't think I can setup the Thomson router to do this. All the instruction I can find online advises me to install a DHCP server on the same machine that serves the pxe boot image. But if I do that, I'll get two DHCP servers on my local network. Is that ok? Will there be a race condition, when a client asks for an IP address? You will have to shutdown the router's DHCP. Probably disable it permanently and assign this function to a machine. The DHCP of the router also sends you the following information (besides IP address): - DNS Server(s): Either the ones used by your ISP (consult its website) or its own address (i.e. 10.0.0.1). Most routers send their own address as a DNS server and perform the resolution by sending your request to ISP servers. - Gateway address: This is always the router's local IP address (i.e. 10.0.0.1) If you setup your own DHCP server, make sure it is set to send this info as well. Release Build
Hello everyone, I am trying to create a customized release build. The idea is to have a NFS export which can be used during installation over the network. My build box is running the same version of BSD(6.2) as the NFS export I intend to create. So instead of mirroring the cvs repository (bandwidth woes :-S) I am using /usr/src. I have built the release using make release CHROOTDIR=/tmp/release BUILDNAME=FreeBSD-custom-6.2 EXTSRCDIR=/usr/src EXTPORTSDIR=/usr/ports WORLD_FLAGS='-j16 -march=prescott' KERNEL_FLAGS='-j16 -march=prescott' -DNOPORTS -DNODOC RELEASETAG=RELENG_6_2 This had completed successfully with my newly built release in /tmp/release/R/. The next thing I did was to export the disc1 folder inside cdrom over NFS and try to boot over the network. I have checked that my netboot works using a CDROM as a NFS export. This time it locks up with Extracting packages. Any clues about where I should start looking?? Hello Lowell, Thank you so much for the reply. I am trying to do the build once and use prebuilt packages for the target boxes. However the problem I am facing is a bit crude. Lets assume I am trying to build pkgA which has dependencies of pkgB and pkgC. The process I am following is cd /usr/ports/xxx/pkgA ; make package. This makes the prebuilt package in /usr/ports/ packages. However it does not case about pkgB which is a dependency. On a target system when I am trying to pkg_add it, it is rightly complaining about a missing dependency and also saying that it cant find the package in the local repository and aborting. If I am using rsync , I can only do it by a crontab , even though at a specfic time only the cron run , if crash occurs after this time then the data after the cron will lose , so which is the right cheaper solution ? Can you suggest good solutions , for the server Backup mechanismso that I can restore all the data just before the crashing moment . pls share your expertise , it will help me lot to secure my data in the server machine .. If you wish to have 0 downtime then the only option is a separate failover server. However much you try, if you do not have a separate box to failover to, it is not possible to do a 0 downtime switchover. Regarding the backup solution, you can either buy an external Hard Disk and back up to it. Alternatively you can back up to tape drives or to NFS mounted volumes. load balancing nat
Hello folks, I have a strange problem on hand. I have got two internal LANs and one ISP link. I am trying to share the link between the two internal LANs and do a load balancing between the two. The rules I am using are: nat on $ext_if from { $int1_if:network, $int2_if:network } to any - $ext_if round-robin where $int1_if, $int2_if are two internal interfaces and $ext_if is the external interface. However my observation is systems using $int_2 as gateway loose connectivity randomly. Also the TTL values for the pings to the gateway change to 150 from 64 as soon as the system looses connectivity. The systems in the LAN are all windows xp boxes. Re: Newbie questions
Hello, Welcome to the world of FreeBSD. First of all, why are you trying to install binaries? I would say it is wiser to use the port system yourself. However remember to cvsup your ports tree before you start using it to get the required software. Refer to the handbook for understanding how ports work. Thanks and Best Regards Subhro On 8/23/06, E. Boot over network
Hello Folks, I was just wondering if this can be done. I would like to have a FreeBSD server which would supply a few workstations connected over the network a boot image. The catch is the boot image has to be a Ubuntu Linux image. I have a fresh installed FreeBSD box as well as a working Ubuntu box which boots locally. All the systems in question has network boot enabled NICs. Can the above setup be done? Any pointers would be welcome. Thanks and Best Regards Subhro ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: What FreeBSD users really want
Hello Sammy, It is really nice that you have told us yourt insight on the matter. I would also like to express my ideas. Please read my replies inline. On 7/22/06, sammy sumer [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Every Linux Distributor in the world is hard at work reinventing the interface and making the Linux as user friendly as possible but we're still dogged by turn of the century hassle with our FreeBSD. This is not correct. The only distros which are working hard to get the interface more friendly are thoes which has some kind of earning. Just for example, if you check slackware, they still have a barebones interface. Secondly FreeBSD community only looks after the base tree. And as per my knowledge, the interface is something external. Here is what I would fix: 1.Reinvent the installer and interface. This is not a bad idea. But again is that really worth the trouble. The existing interface works perfectly. So why fix something which is not broken. BTW, by reinventing if you mean to say that make the installer go graphical, then there is a small problem. You are making the installer more heavy which really has no value. 2.Integrate a PHP shell into the core of the system. This would be a very good idea if you have something call FreeBSD-Web_Edition which is not the case. FreeBSD hosts all kinds of services. Therefore the more things u put in stock OS, there would be more points of failure. BTW why do you feel that the existing port system is not adequate? PHP is by far the most popular computing language in the world. Why not have a shell called PHP shell. So lots of web developers out there can easily create shell scripts in PHP syntax to automate and run programs on FreeBSD. Perl is no less popular. Specially Perl had been around far longer than PHP. But FBSD does not have perl in stock installations either. Primarrily for the idea of Keep It Simple. Who wants to learn bash or sh scripting? They are by far the least popular and ugly programming language in the world. It may be ugly, but its a really fast way to implement small operations. And FYI, we system admins swear by shell scripts. It is astounding that FreeBSD developers have not clued in to the fact that millions of backend webmasters could easily migrate and adopt FreeBSD as their O.S of their choice because of PHP. Do you have this documented? 3.Content Management Website Your current website looks very ordinary and doesn't make any impression for anyone visiting your site for the first time. Well we recently got the website look changed. Did you like the earlier view? Would you please tell us what you mean by ordinary and what kind of website would be more acceptable to people in generaly. Please consider the fact that sometimes all you have is a text based browser to refer to the handbook when you are stuck up in the middle of an installation. So please provide your comments considering the same. Don't get me wrong, I love FreeBSD and I always remain loyal to it. I love the unique port collection concept for third party application installation. Of course not. The biggest asset of FreeBSD is its users. So as a user you have full rights to express your insight. Thanks and Best Regards Subhro -- Subhro Kar Security Engineer iViZ Techno Solutions Pvt. Ltd. Re: The question that wont die: What size partitions should I make?
wrangled sat at his 'puter and typed on 12/5/2005 0:10: I have dual-boot laptop, 30GB Fat32 Win2000 and 70GB FreeBSD 6.0-R. I plan to use this for normal home desktop use (not as a server). I have 512MB RAM. According to this page: http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/install-steps.html I should use: / = 100MB /swap = 1GB /var = 50MB /usr = rest (68GB) On past FreeBSD installs, I would occasionaly do things as root, and ran out of space in /root. Since then, on desktop machines (with 250GB drives), I would make / be 4GB. On my lapatop, I wouldn't want to give up 4 of my 70 gigs if I didn't have to. So I am looking for a realistic number that wont cramp me, and wont waste too much space. I am planning on 1GB, so it will be big enough to hold the contents of a 700MB CD ISO. That is a VERY VERY BAD idea. It is not recommended to do ANYTHING as root which can be done as some other non privileged user. I have no idea how much of /var I need, other than I like to install various packages to try them out, and I would not want to limit something like a webserver or email server if I chose to run one for limited use. A friend took the default install suggestions for a machine he planned to do some web development on, and said his /var was way too small (they were new to FreeBSD also). I am guessing 5GB for /var would allow me to run a mail-server (for personal use) and Apache+extensions for limited website developement Generally the maximum space is eaten up by the logs and the databases (if any) hosted on the system. A swap of 1GB is fine, I'm not sure I've ever actually used any swap on my machines that had more than 128MB. Depends solely on the applications you are trying to run on the box. I want /usr to be as big as possible (obviously), so my primary user account will have as much space as possible in /use/home/account. Should I use: / = 1GB /swap = 1GB /var = 5GB /usr = rest (63GB) This is my personal scheme for my desktop which hosts my personal website and a very very small database which is basically my phone directory and appointment schedules. / = 128M swap=2G /var = 2G /var/tmp = 128M /usr = rest. /tmp is symlinked to /var/tmp. Now my system specs: Athlon 64Fx-55 1G DDR 400M RAM 3*160G SATA150 Western Digital in RAID 5 ASUS K8N-SLI DX motherboard. Again, nothing is absolute. The reason that I am investigating FreeBSD is because I hear that it performs GREAT under heavy loads and many larger ISP are using it without fail. In my experience, Linux, although a great OS, seems to bog down under heavy loading. I could be wrong though and it could have just been to misconfiguration on my part. Well, I have a base installation of FreeBSD 4.11 which is needed for a particular project but now need to compile the kernel to support QUOTA's. My question is how do I install the sources over the web so that I can compile the kernel to support quotas? The FreeBSD docs tell a little, but mostly assume that you have the sources already on the system to compile which I do not have and need to download them. Andrew P. sat at his 'puter and typed on 9/18/2005 1:49: Hello! I use FreeBSD/amd64 6.0 as the only OS on my desktop PC. Having carefully thought over pros and cons, I decided to downgrade to i386 for the time being. What on earth does this mean? This is simply not possible. amd64 is a completely different platform. i386 is a 32 bit platform and amd64 is a 64 bit one. You can upgrade or downgrade from one version to other provided the platform remains constant. But upgrading from one patform to other involves buying and assembling physically different hardware holding different copies of OS. Re: Partial web page loading
Andrew Waranowski sat at his 'puter and typed on 8/21/2005 21:31: Hey, I have the same problem over here, except that I can recreate the problem well easily and predictably. I don't know a whole lot about computers but this is very weird. Here's what happened: I have a website that I'm working on in PHP. I have a few pages that have text and image content and when I go to them, they either load completely or partially. If it's only partially loaded, I can refresh the page a few times and then it will show the whole contents of the PHP file it's displaying. At first I thought it had something to do with server caching, but then I found that when the web browser displays the whole page, I can refresh it a few times and it will display only a portion of the page; it cuts off right in the middle of some text. Weird! And I've looked at the HTML very carefully - everything is as it should be. The browser cuts off at a seemingly arbitrary place in the HTML and does not even include the footer.inc file I included. Very very strange. Re: Newbie - Trouble installing OpenOffice
On 6/21/2005 5:58, Lawrence Petrykanyn wrote: Hi! Hello :-), First, I tried to install OpenOffice using the ports collection. The first attempt proceeded successfully for quite a while, but then failed because it was unable to fetch certain files (no file found, access denied), then subsequent attempts failed because it said that a lower version was already installed. Before trying a second time, did you clean up the installation folders using 'make clean'? So I did a pkg_delete which did not work because: pkg_delete couldn't entirely delete package (perhaps the packing list is incorrectly specified?). Didn't get you. What did you try to pkg_delete? So I looked in /var/db/pkg but didn't see an OpenOffice folder. Entirely expected. OpenOffice installation was not registered as it was never completed. Knowing when to quit, I decided to install the package so I downloaded OOo_1.1.3_FreeBSD410Intel410_install.tgz and did pkg_add -r openoffice. It is always a good idea to use prebuilt binaries compared to home made ones for two reasons. First of all if you dont have a very powerful system, it would be a hard time compiling something like KDE or OpenOffice which can very well take days before it finishes off. Secondly, it saves lot of bandwidth. That matters if you are not very rich and bandwidth is costly like it is for me. But the pros of using home made binaries are, you can use optimizations and make the binary hardware specific. This would give a BIG performance gain. Secondly there are a few features which needs to be enabled at compile time. In most of the cases this calls for using the ports. The attempt failed but I did manage to copy the output.
