disabling my mouse nipple
i'm using a dell d600 with 6.0-STABLE and Xorg on it. my mouse nipple is crazy|damaged: sometimes when i type keys next to it - 't', 'y', 'f', 'g', 'h', 'j', 'v', 'b', 'n' - the mouse pointer goes zooming across the screen, usually to the left. i don't know anything about the underlying hardware or drivers, so i would like to disable the mouse nipple at startup until i make time to consult a professional. i also have a touchpad, but i can't figure out which device is the touchpad and which is the mouse nipple - my dmesg only lists one device as a mouse. ## Copyright (c) 1992-2005 The FreeBSD Project. Hi, I am having a lot of trouble setting up mail. And, perhaps more importantly, I am having a lot of trouble figuring what software to set-up. Sendmail is standard but buggy, so I imagine that Postfix is a better choice. But what should I use for secure IMAP? Can't Mount Optical Drive
Hi, I'm on a Dell Latitude D600 with a CD-RW/DVD-R. When I try to mount the drive I get an error: 5 # mount /dev/acd0 /cdrom mount: /dev/acd0: Input/output error But dmesg says: acd0: CDRW at ata1-master PIO4 So although my drive is recognized correctly, it doesn't work with FreeBSD. But it worked for building and installing FreeBSD a few days ago, so I know the drive is functional. How do I get the drive to mount? Does it make any difference that I am running GNOME 2.6? I have some another disk mounting question, too. Sometimes when I try to mount the CD drive I get an error that goes something like: Incorrect super block What does this error mean? Can't Mount USB Flash Drive
Hi, I have a Dell D600, and I count mount flash devices on it. They show up in dmesg. Here I put the drive in the top one, pull it out and stick it in the bottom one, and then put it back in the top one: ugen0: SanDisk Corporation Cruzer Mini, rev 2.00/0.10, addr 2 ugen0: at uhub0 port 1 (addr 2) disconnected ugen0: detached ugen0: SanDisk Corporation Cruzer Mini, rev 2.00/0.10, addr 2 ugen0: at uhub0 port 1 (addr 2) disconnected ugen0: detached ugen0: SanDisk Corporation Cruzer Mini, rev 2.00/0.10, addr 2 Strangely, they show up as the same address on the same device. When I try to mount ugen0, I get a message that sayeth: Block device required. What does this mean? What do I do? - Jason Saint Aardvark the Carpeted wrote: Jason Dusek disturbed my sleep to write: In that there must be something else wrong, because after trying a few permutations I was unable to get the drive on my D600 to work: 1 root # mount_cd9660 /dev/acd0 /cdrom mount_cd9660: /dev/acd0: Input/output error 2 root # mount_cd9660 /dev/acd0c /cdrom mount_cd9660: /dev/acd0c: No such file or directory Huh...you should have /dev/acd0c already. Try going to /dev and running: sh ./MAKEDEV acd sh ./MAKEDEV cd and try it again. If it *still* doesn't work, I would wonder if there's a problem with this particular disk. Is it a rewritable? Do you have a known-good CD that you can try, or another machine you can try the problematic disk on? Remember, /dev/cd0c is to be used if this is a DVD you're trying to mount. (That said, I'm going by memory here, and you *may* be able to get away with mounting a DVD using /dev/acd0c.) Do I need to create some directories for this to work? How will my computer know what directories to attach the drive to? The mount command (or its variants like "mount_cd9660") usually takes two arguments: the device you want to mount, and where you want to mount it. (I'm ignoring other, hyphenated arguments like "-o rw" and so on.) So for: mount_cd9660 /dev/acd0c /cdrom you're saying that you want the device /dev/acd0c to be made available at the *already-existing* directory /cdrom. (So yes, the mount point -- the directory you want to mount the device at -- has to be present already.) You can leave out one or the other argument (but not both) if there's an entry for the device in /etc/fstab. For example, you might have this entry: /dev/acd0c /cdrom cd9660 ro,noauto 0 0 which would mean you could get away with either mount /cdrom or mount /dev/acd0c HTH, Hugh ___ [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"
reinstall world
Hi, I gave my entire laptop's hard drive to FreeBSD, but I am beginning to have second thoughts - a lot of my devices don't work. I think I might try dual booting FreeBSD and, say, Gentoo. So this will probably work, because I'm only using a small portion of the disk at present: 17 root # df -m Filesystem 1M-blocks Used Avail Capacity Mounted on /dev/ad0s1a 247 123 10454%/ devfs 00 0 100%/dev /dev/ad0s1g 89310 8216 0%/home /dev/ad0s1e 9890 910 0%/tmp /dev/ad0s1f 24790 3621 1918616%/usr /dev/ad0s1d 989 37 872 4%/var What is a good way to make space on my disk? If I just repartition /usr and /home, I'll probably screw them up. So if I tar up each of the partitions, and maybe etc and some other junk as well, and then: 1. Reformat and reinstall. Put on Gentoo and BSD. 2. Go into the BSD slice and nuke everything, then unpack my tarballs. do I have a good chance of everything working right? - Jason ___ [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

I am using a custom kernel (also attached) that got along fine with the CD drive before I rebuilt the world. A generic kernel can read the drive okay - but I wanted to have someone else look at this one before I started the laborious process of removing devices one by one to get at the cause of my trouble. - Jason # $FreeBSD: src/sys/i386/conf/CUSTOM,v 1.394.2.3 2004/01/26 19:42:11 nectar Exp $ machine i386 cpu I686_CPU ident FREEBSD options SCHED_4BSD #4BSD scheduler options INET#InterNETworking options INET6 #InterNETworking v6 options FFS #Berkeley Fast Filesystem options SOFTUPDATES #Enable FFS soft updates support options UFS_ACL #Support for access control lists options UFS_DIRHASH #Improve performance on big directories options COMPAT_43 #Compatible with BSD 4.3 [KEEP THIS!] options COMPAT_FREEBSD4 #Compatible with FreeBSD4 options SYSVSHM #SYSV-style shared memory options SYSVMSG #SYSV-style message queues options SYSVSEM #SYSV-style semaphores options _KPOSIX_PRIORITY_SCHEDULING #Posix P1003_1B real-time extensions # BUS device isa device pci device agp # support several AGP chipsets # Floppy drives device fdc # ATA and ATAPI devices device ata device atadisk # ATA disk drives device atapicd # ATAPI CDROM drives # Input device atkbdc # AT keyboard controller device atkbd # AT keyboard device psm # PS/2 mouse device vga # VGA video card driver device splash # Splash screen and screen saver support device sc # FPU device npx device pmtimer # Pccard device cbb # cardbus (yenta) bridge device pccard # PC Card (16-bit) bus device cardbus # CardBus (32-bit) bus # Serial (COM) ports device sio # 8250, 16[45]50 based serial ports # Parallel port device ppc device ppbus # Parallel port bus (required) device lpt # Printer # Nic device miibus # MII bus support device bge # Broadcom BCM570xx Gigabit Ethernet # Wireless NIC cards device wlan# 802.11 support device an # Aironet 4500/4800 802.11 wireless NICs. device wi # WaveLAN/Intersil/Symbol 802.11 wireless NICs. # Audio Device device pcm # Pseudo devices - the number indicates how many units to allocate. device random # Entropy device device loop# Network loopback device ether # Ethernet support device pty # Pseudo-ttys (telnet etc) device bpf # Berkeley packet filter # USB support device uhci# UHCI PCI->USB interface device usb # USB Bus (required) device ugen# Generic device ums # Mouse Copyright (c) 1992-2004 The FreeBSD Project. Tomcat Goes Its Own Way
Hi, I am having a weird problem with Tomcat: If I go into the jsp examples and modify the .jspx files, my changes have no effect on how they are executed! I can even delete them, it doesn't matter - they run just as before. But deleting or modifying .html files in the same directory has the expected effected. I have tried restarting Tomcat, and I 've even rebooted my machine - it doesn't seem to make any difference. How is this happening? Does Tomcat keep redundant copies of the .jspx files somewhere? - Jason ___ [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

C include question
Hi, I would like to compile some OpenGL stuff on my BSD box. Unfortunately, the GL libraries are not in /usr/include/GL - they are in /usr/X11R6/include/GL and my C compiler does not see that by default. One easy way around this is, I think, to just soft link /usr/X11R6/include/* to /usr/include/ - but that would defeat the point of seperating the X11 includes from the system includes. What is the right way to set this up so that my C compiler, no matter which one it is, will always find the GL libraries? Is there some kind of 'cc.conf' somewhere in the same sense as there is a 'make.conf'? I am new to C - in fact this OpenGL stuff is my first exposure to it. I'm sure that this is an elementary question, and the only reason that I post it to the list is that I am trying to find a way to solve my problem that is more in keeping with BSD philosophy than simply moving /usr/X11R6/include into /usr/include. _jason ___ [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"
Re: C include question
No, because the libs have include statements in them. For example, in my source code I might write: #include "/usr/X11R6/include/GL/glut.h" But this fails because glut.h has the following statements in it: #include #inlcude For it to work, I would have to ammend it to say: #include "gl.h" #inlcude "glu.h" But at the point where I am rewriting bits of the standard GL libraries, it's time to take a different approach. _jason Jorge Mario G. wrote: Hi there cant you just use #include "/the/libs/are/here" = _ Do You Yahoo!? Setting Up IMAP
Hi Everyone, I have two bsd machines that have seperate connections to the internet. I set up one of them with IMAP-UW and stunnel. So I set up Kmail on the other one with a recieving account configured to get mail from port 993 using TLS authentication. This sort of works, but there are interesting problems: Problem 1 My mail server's certificate 'fails' the authenticity test because it is self-assigned. Why is this bad (aren't I *supposed* to get a certificate with # make cert in the stunnel port?) and what do I do to get a better certificate? Problem 2 Kmail allows me accept the bad certificate and logs in succesfully. It then shows me my *entire* home directory, not just the mail folder. Investigative Computing
Hi Everyone, I wrote in earlier with a problem on my Compaq Presario R3000 - when I try to install 5.2.1 from the cd, I can't boot the kernel - after I pick a kernel, the machine powers down. What do I do to figure out how to fix this thing? I've tried several Linux distributions as well - they are Gentoo, Fedora and Jollix (A German Gentoo derivative). I was able to install Fedora successfully, and all the other Linuxes can boot from the cd. Jollix successfully starts X and brings up a KDE desktop. So it seems that getting Open Source to work on this machine is not so impossible - and I would really like to have FreeBSD on it if I could.
