I experimented with it yesterday for the first time, and it took me just 15 minutes to get started, in spite of my near complete lack of internet experience (except of course web browsers and email clients). This also means that your manuals are well written, so my compliments for that too. Because I am now obsessed with idling the CPU by means of FD-APM, I tried your FTP with the DPAKBD program. It worked well, and CPU idle time was above 90%. And, last but not least ... the bug report! This is about SNTP. My Time Zone variable is set to UTC+3 (Brazil). Thank you. That works. I haven't run SETUP yet but your commands do indeed mount the ISO as X:. In fact what I did is to boot the CD and look for the the SHSUCD* files, at which point I noticed the FREEDOS and DRIVER directories which were missing from the boot floppy. So I copied them to the floppy and booted the laptop from it. The menu which is displayed still didn't work though, so I had to type your commands. At the moment I have no time for troubleshooting but when I do how do I file a bug report? [Freedos-user] Soundcard Audigy 2 works in MPXPLAY but nowhere else.
Hello, I have such an audiocard, wich are listed in the soundcardfile from MPXPLAY with native hardware access. My problem is I have some games, I like to try with audio, but I can´t make it work. I looked for the helpfiles over and over, but nothing describe a soundcard installer or so to do what I wanna do^^. In the autoexec.bat I found the VIAUDIO row, but in the C:\FDOS\Packages\VIAX is a file depends.txt and in there is the word wget. I haven´t install wget because I have such a mobile Internet and DOS can´t work with that. Could I install wget and get sound without working wget (internetconnection)? I have found in the internet a DOSDRV for Audigy 1, but to install it I need Windows, I tried to install Windows 3.11 on FreeDos drive but after installation the Windows try to start but my PC falls to sleep and nothing happens. And on Win7 x64 I can´t work with most 32bit applications. Some possibilities: - ask somebody with an old Windows version to unpack DOSDRV for you - try if UNZIP or 7ZIP can unzip the DOSDRV installer directly - run the DOSDRV installer in Wine in Linux or maybe in ReactOS To comment on the issue with Windows for Workgroups 3.11 in FreeDOS: This is a very widespread but very unusual version of Windows 3, as it only works in 386enh mode. That mode only works if Windows can encapsulate DOS into a multitasking bubble. The support for that is experimental in FreeDOS. Using Windows 3.0 or 3.1 in standard mode is probably easier. You can also try the safe mode equivalent of WfW 3.11, but be aware that as in Win95 and Win98, this is a quite limited mode as most WfW 3.11 drivers only come in 386enh style. Note that all old versions of Windows also have problems if you have more than 256 MB of RAM, but can be made to work with up to 1 GB of RAM with tricks (reduce overcommit / swap). If you have even more RAM, you have to tell your HIMEMX or XMGR or JEMMEX to ignore the rest of your RAM so Windows does not get overwhelmed. I have tried to unzip the DOSDRV It run but told me can only be installed under Win 95 and 98 with VXD drivers installed. Perhaps I make a partition for such a Windows. Hi Johannes, I have heard that the most soundcards work with an old dosdriver for SB compatible cards. Maybe not. The Audigy driver will probably be designed only for Audigy cards. If the Audigy is AC97 compatible it might be easy for Creative to also support more AC97 compatible cards - but why would they want to do that? Of course they prefer it that people by their cards :-) Note that an old project for a generic solution exists and even is open source. It is called VSB and creates a virtual soundblaster 1.0 - not 2.0, not pro, not 16. Which is too old and simple even for most DOS games :-p Because the project is old, I think it only has output to old hardware such as Covox (printer port DAC) but it shows the general idea... In theory, you could take the VSB source code and reconnect the stream of VSB audio data to drivers for modern hardware, which could be ported from ALSA-project for Linux or from MPXPLAY. In practice, such things are quite complicated, as is virtual / simulated hardware from scratch anyway. In environments like DOSEMU, the operating system which runs the real hardware helps you. Still it is a good idea to use DOSEMU, Bochs or similar source code for more complete SoundBlaster16 emulations as yet another ingredient for the holy grail of the universal HDA or AC97 to SB16 transmogrification driver ;-) And between I live in Berlin^^ and speak german^^ Then I could visit you because Berlin is a nice city, but actually I do not live in Berlin ;-) This is only were I have my email address. Tried several times to use ordinary Soundblaster Live! under DOS - and _never_ was able to make any use out of this card under DOS. Maybe someone of you managed to configure this card for DOS? Just out of curiosity, since I've got ISA cards, that I'm using with no problems whatsoever - but I'm wondering, was it possible at all? Hi Zbigniew! Tried several times to use ordinary Soundblaster Live! under DOS - and _never_ was able to make any use out of this card under DOS. Note that SB Live! is not a SoundBlaster in the sense that SB 1.0, SB 1.5, SB Pro, SB 2.0 or SB 16 are, it is not compatible to any of those DOS game compatible cards. However, I seem to remember that SB Live! comes with a quite good virtual simulated SB16 in DOS style driver, so as long as you run that, your games might be just fine. I think the driver needs EMM386 to be present and some of the FreeDOS EMM386 / JEMM386 / JEMMEX variant versions need a special command line option to allow the SB Live! driver to do some strange things that it needs to do to simulate SB16. This is of course documented in the EMM driver docs then... :-) Maybe someone of you managed to configure this card for DOS? Good question :-) Anybody? Just out of curiosity, since I've got ISA cards, that I'm using with no problems whatsoever - but I'm wondering, was it possible at all? Talking about which, ISA slots are very rare now, but as compromise: have experience with the new GigaByte AM3+ GA-870A-UD3 mainboard yet? According to the Open Watcom documentation, the TZ environment variable follows this format: std_offset_dst_offset_,_rule (underscores are added for readability) Std and dst are time zone designations. The +3 that you are adding is an offset. So when Open Watcom parses the environment variable is sets your time zone as UTC and the offset as +3 hours from coordinated universal time. Timezone is what SNTP is printing out. I think this is a matter of working as designed. I might add some more output to make it more clear, but it probably is not a bug. Regards, Mike If SNTP works anyway like in Linux/UNIX then the computer takes its hardware clock as UTC. If the hardware clock is offset to local time it will be misinterpreted. The poor computer doesn't have any conception of UTC by itself, it only knows its hardware clock. Hi Mike, I shouldn't even have called this thing a bug. It is, at most, an issue of semantics. Because the SNTC screen message used the word timezone, I thought it would write UTC+3. I'm probably right on that point (just ckecked it in the Wikipedia), but it was rather diselegant from me to find fault in such a fine set of programs. I apologize. I have such an audiocard, wich are listed in the soundcardfile from MPXPLAY with native hardware access. My problem is I have some games, I like to try with audio, but I can´t make it work. I had the same problem. Dosbox is a great program, but I prefer playing my old Sierra and LucasArts games (I still have some diskettes and CDs) in a clean DOS, and not an emulated one. I bought like 3 years ago a SB Live! which came with DOS drivers. I never managed to play all the games with sound. I don't remember if they were the newer ones or older ones that didn't work well. My problems ended a couple of months ago, I've bought a 1998 Dell computer (~ US$ 13) and a SB16 (~ US$ 5). The cdrom was broken but I changed it with the cdrom from a newer computer (2002). All games, I've been playing, work excellent and unpatched (because of speed) I've found a computer graveyard in my city that sells all kind of hardware. I am thinking in buying an AWE32 card which is bigger than the SB16 and only costs 3 american dollars (seller thinks bigger means not good).
