Re: [Freedos-user] Fiddling with XMS and EMS
Xtree complains after a minute: device: AUX, Cannot write data. Dunno, would only make a horrible suggestion to use a different file manager, e.g. DJGPP-built Ytree. good hint, found FM which has exactly the same problems with JEMMEX as BP has. Difference is, it does not run in any config. If no EMS or XMS available I get Runtime error 200, else I get 000E. the only ytree binary i was able to find is for Windows. ;( FM second one: ytree 5.: http://www.xtreefanpage.org/lowres/x60softw.htm (Without further knowledge, it's very difficult, esp. since I don't have Xtree. But I honestly hate the idea of giving up or don't use it as worthwhile advice.) ;) any clone would be ok. XT has got a feature my father uses often, NC and clones dont have it. and he is used to XT. BP IDE starts fine, did not try further yet. current JEMMEX config is DEVICE=C:\DOS\BIN\JEMMEX.EXE NOEMS X=TEST NOVME NOINVLPG Wait, are you running inside a VM? There's almost no other explanation for using NOVME. no idea. this is what the freedos installer installed ;) havent thought about it yet. removing NOVME did not change anything. Dunno, no reason it should be using so much or even both XMS plus EMS at the same time. Might be some configuration setting (env. var.?) for that somewhere. Or it could just be the extender's bug. Try HDPMI16 or DPMIONE instead. mh, DPMIONE + FM did not work in any memory config. HDPMI i did not try yet, since it comes with a huge DOS extender package. its hard to remember. its s long ago since I dealt with DPMI etc. so DPMI gets on top of any XMS manager? If I remember/understand correctly, XMS is provided by: himem.sys, jemmex, xmgr, emm386 etc. why does MEM report EMS when JEMMEX option says NOEMS? MEM isn't always reliable, there is no other solution? I tried JEMMEX VERBOSE and it reports 8 MB EMS with NOEMS option. strange. will check if there is a newer version... http://www.japheth.de/Jemm.html It's hard for some extenders to work in all circumstances, esp. modern machines. Clearly they weren't fully tested, and they make some weird assumptions, probably because it mostly worked fine in common cases (e.g. legacy Win9x). 16-bit DPMI was always quirky, says CWS, because it was always relying on non-standard, undocumented int 21h extensions. well, the P3 is a good choice I think. has a lot of modern interfaces, but is not that different from the old hardware as really modern PCs. I do not want to know the problems one has with UEFI BIOSes. ;) XKEYB is deprecated. Try Aitor's latest KEYB 2.01 bugfix instead, if possible, it is preferred. does not work with USBDOS. Re: [Freedos-user] directions for Bret J.'s USB driver
Hi Bret, in short: everyhing works now, and there weren't any real problems, one couldn't solve by following a short how-to. Your drivers are great! :) I removed the PCI USB2.0 adapter. Now there is only one hosts left. Having a lot of hosts wasn't a problem, removing just made things more clear. And I discovered the USBHUB program, which made me find mouse and keyboard behind the hubs (keyboard internal hub). Now both basically work, even with the switch in between, to switch them between two PCs. The problem with the double letters was solved by unloading KEYB. DOS7-KEYB doesn't work yet, I believe it wants to have it's own KEYBOARD.SYS file. USBKEYB typing methods didn't change anything. Still Freedos Edit crashs upon startup when the usb drivers are loaded. I believe I have to check my JEMM config before I try anything else. I asked to the list if I may put the USBDOS how-to on the Freedos wiki. It will contain a lot of screen prints, so for further details on my setup you may have look on it, as soon as it's on-line. There is still one topic: The PC once came up with a setup where the devices had been attached to one of the offboard Via hosts. Can this be true or has it been a misinterpretation/mistake by me? If the setup changes with every boot up, without changing where the devices are physically plugged... Then my autoexec.bat config might not work all the time. Do the drivers return any batch readable output? My idea was to return the number of devices found using ERRORLEVEL. Then you may try different hosts automatically in a batch file. regards, Jan -- Live Security Virtual Conference Exclusive live event will cover all the ways today's security and threat landscape has changed and how IT managers can respond. Re: [Freedos-user] directions for Bret J.'s USB driver
Hi again, I searched my attic and found a very old DIN Cherry G80-1501 Keyboard with german health insurance card reader. Now it's easier to experiment with the USB driver, since the keyboard continues to work. I found out how to start the driver. First USBUHCI - seems to work. after that USBMOUSE and USBKEYB. Both install, but do not seem to find anything. how can I found out what is going wrong? BTW, there is a bug in USBKEY. While it is loaded, my DIN Keyboard on PS/2 port sends about 50% of the letters twice. This does not seem to apply to non-printable keys like backspace, enter or the cursor keys. I'll exchange the keyboard with my primary Cherry G80-1500 and see if this error still occurs. Your most likely problem is that you have more than one UHCI host controller, and you are only installing the driver for the first one, but your keyboard is not plugged into the first one. You can use USBHOSTS to tell you how many USB host controllers you actually have. I have got 3xUHCI (1x Intel, 2xVia). There is an EHCI controller, but it's offboard so I am sure I did not plug anything into these ports. (btw, don't know how to load the driver for this host, since it has #0, too) I used USBDEVIC to check if there are devices on the host: just now it reports both, mouse and keyboard for host #0 (intel). after loading ctmouse the mouse works, but the keyboard doesn't. edit: when legacy is off, the keyboard LEDs turn on when loading USBUHCI #0, and off when unloading. once the devices were listed at host #1 (via) in this case, the keyboard worked, but loading usbmouse crashed the system. could not yet reproduce this config. what about the message: initilizing ps/2 mouse if this message is shown has nothing to do with a mouse attached or not. Still I got the problem with the PS/2 keyboard. As soon as the USBKEYB is loaded, roughly every second keypress shows two letters. This seems to be true for printable characters only. Hi, well, I am planning a PC upgrade. I already realized only a single manufacturer still offers floppy controllers. What a shame. Today I realized old BIOS is gone. And I cannot find much on the backwards compatibily of UEFI. There has to be a Compatibility Support Module (CSM) for old operating systems. Where does it come from? Some say, from the OS developer. Re: [Freedos-user] UIDE Performance -- Small Caches DO Work O.K.!
Hi, I cannot resist... in the following read my comments on caching and buffering. Even Windows XP (did not try nore recent versions yet) suffers from bad buffering when copying files from and to the same harddrive. It takes 10x to 100x time compared to copying from one drive to another one. I installed SuperCopier 2.2 beta which catches Explorer copy actions and does them itself. Well, now you are able to define huge buffers... but it does not help much, because its a question of filling and flushing the buffer, as XCOPY did. !!! beware, supercopy has got a bug when using buffers larger than 64k, causing it to abort the operation on files larger than 4 gig. !!! Caching does not help much with operations like this. Ok, caching FAT and directories... When working with large files, you always have to code buffering on your own. For example, I compiled mplex (mpeg muxer) myself using cygwin. Works correctly but uses the wrong file mode. Result is my RAM gets filled with cached data from the target file. Everything else gets paged out. The system breaks down to almost unusable until the process is finished. Then it takes decades to swap in the other programs again... What I want to say is, you can have Terabytes of RAM, it won't help in a case like this when the file operation is about as large as your RAM. If there was an upper limit for the amount of cache used for a single file, there would be no problem at all. So small caches sometimes perform even better! Hi, read this as a user experience report. Maybe you can add a few messages here and there to make more clear what is going on. In this case, I am happy for now ;) after having all files in place (on disk), I started the installer. It asks were to install to. I wrote c:\test since I am not sure, if it wants to know the DOS location. any suggestion would be nice. ** was a good idea, now I can compare the DOS and TEST dirs. yes, it would have overwritten more recent software In the first time, I called the install.exe from the wrong location. I did not get any error message, it just did not install anything in no time *g* Answering the questions install all and install source seems to be odd. First tried N, N which resulted in an empty install. (still wrong location). Then I tried Y,N which was printed as Y,Y on screen. Maybe the installer was confused, because I pressed Z instead. Now I realized the problem calling from the wrong location. I ran install.exe again. this time N,N which did not ask which packages actually to install. So it did install all packages? Then why did it ask? I got error messages TZ envirnoment variable not found, cannot use UTC time excluded filename does not match source/* which is because the 1.0 packages do not have a source folder. This is for hardware P3-800, Asus Cubx board, Intel i440BX chip, 384MB of RAM, Network 3Com 3c905b On Oracle VirtualBox it works, but takes a long time searching the IDE bus. (did not attach a harddrive) Now these problems are documented and the drive is formatted, I will try the old installer CD again. JPT ps. I made screenshots, but I did not attach them to this email. so if you need more details, give me an email adress where to send them. -- Got Input? Slashdot Needs You. Take our quick survey online. Re: [Freedos-user] FD 1.0 installation... very instable?
Rugxulo, you are right, I should do this in a more structured way. expected to throw the CD in, and thats it. EDIT: current status is: - hardware ok, maybe the memory was faulty, i have to verify this. - freedos 1.1 successfully installed. - Debian installer is currently downloading addtional packages. next steps, as soon as debian is working: - install additional dos packages - make network work Details of what I have done yet: hardware - CPU and board should be rocking stable, had XP running for years without probs. - memory... Was 3x128 + 1x256 = 640, but recognized only 384 MB. This might indicate a problem. Removed all but 1x128 MB. Memtest runs fast now, 20 mins for 2 passes. Everything ok. I will reinsert and check some of the other memory modules later. (I did memtest before without error, but who knows...) - disk, ontrack is running, 2h. No error. I have my rescue floppies and CDRWs always at hand, but the labels aren't matching the content any more, for most of them :) - CPU clock rate too high for a lot of old dos software? Do you think clocking down to below 500 Mhz might help? Bart says so for his network boot floppy. - A20 stuff... especially the XMS/EMS driver loading seems to fail often. I have in mind that A20 has to do something with EMS oder XMS. (or UMB?) And, A20 is some hack using the keyboard controller. Since I attached an USB keyboard to a USB switch, for easily switching between computers... could this be a problem, eg in the BIOS USB Keyboard code? Now to the software. - This time I partitioned and formatted the drive before booting the installer. btw, the fdisk program contained on the floppy sucks. created a bad partition layout. have to move partitions now... what about xfdisk instead? - Install debian... for having less trouble with partitioning in the future, and to verify the hardware. - install Freedos 1.1T3 Ran through in almost no time, wow! I got the same error message from Jemm, but pressing ESC continued booting the installer. So where do you suggest to continue? Should I jump to the 1.0 installer? or should I install manually? Could you point me to a tutorial for manual install, or is it just unpack anywhere, as we are used from old dos? - network its a 3c905b. It should work using the NDIS driver included with Barts Network Boot Disk. Does it work with freedos out of the box or do I have to do this manually using this wiki page? http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/freedos/index.php?title=Networking_FreeDOS_-_NDIS_driver_installation Which cards are known to be working? Got a few Realtek based somewhere... Regarding your other questions. Production meaning what? Dunno, not sure it's been verified for military use. ^_^ well, we are still using an old 486 with DOS 5 for some special hardware and software (which partly was ported from apple II a long time ago) since the 14 monitor broke down yesterday and the 200 MB harddrive broke down half a year ago... we have to go to slighly newer hardware that is able to run at least a linux, and has got some interfaces for backup. It would also help to know what big apps you've tried (or primarily want) to run, just to know what you expect to work. I need: - pascal compiler - maybe basic compiler or interpreter - maybe fortran compiler, if the old software has to be recompiled - network would be nice - some basic linux tools, eg vim, df, du, dd, wget... EDIT: Oh yeah, you'd need working network, that's kinda arcane. But if it works (by some miracle) ehm, so network won't work?:( Well, so far for now. I continue with debian install...
