Well, today with help from Apple Support, we were able to upgrade the library files to work on our iMac running Snow Leopard. When I have time on Wednesday, we'll try to connect this external drive to the Mac Mini running OS 10.10.5 Yosemite. It involved changing the file extension on the iTunes Library document and moving some iTunes Library files to the Previous iTunes folder, as well as renaming some files. When all is finished, I will write down what we did to benefit others. For reference, the Apple technician who has been assisting me at Apple Care is Matthew Davis. He works Sat. and Mon - Wed. 12 - 11pm EST. I believe you can call his extension an a message will tell you how to proceed to create a new case. By the way, Apple Care is free to everyone through Christmas, not just those who purchased new devices. Hi Diane - I would hold off on wiping the older machine until you are certain you can access your iTunes library from your other computers. Here is what I've learned so far: I have been in to the Apple Genius Bar twice, and have had one lengthy session with Apple Care over the phone. It seems that iTunes has gone through some major changes to the structure since Leopard which make it impossible for the older version to upgrade directly to Yosemite (10.10.5) which is the OS that my new Mac Mini came with. We have an external iTunes drive with over 600G of music, organized into playlists which I created, and that the iTunes store would not be able to recreate. I am moving very slowly on all this, as several years ago I had to try to reconstruct it. I spent over 40 hours, and it still wasn't quite right, as there were many songs that were labeled "Track 1", etc. and were unfortunately organized only by the playlists. The Apple Care person will be working again tomorrow, Sunday, so I will consult with him again. We have a G4 iBook running Tiger, and and a late 2009 iMac running Snow Leopard. One thought is (with the help of Apple Care) to incrementally upgrade the iMac one OS at a time, and upgrading the external iTunes along with it. When the iTunes is finally upgraded to Yosemite on the iMac, it should (conceivably) work when attached to te Mac Mini running Yosemite. The G4 iBook can be upgraded to Leopard. I have the discs, so I might try to upgrade that computer and try running the external iTunes drive from that. I will continue to post any progress, and would appreciate any ideas from you or others who have faced a similar dilemma. Thanks for sharing the details of your setup and challenges. I've had iTunes in the G4 since the beginning of time and backed up the phone and iPad to it (until I had to upgrade to iOS 7 but that's another story). I was planning on a new laptop in the spring and knew I'd have a drastically smaller HD plus I could no longer back up the mobile devices. So I read up on migrating my library to an external drive which went flawlessly. I could read and modify my library from either machine and back up again too. This was a couple of months before the new laptop. Again, I haven't dug into it too deeply, but even when I hook the external to the new laptop and select the correct library path, all I can see in my library are the songs I've purchased that are shared via the cloud. :( which is about 200 out of 1300, no playlists or anything else. Redirect iTunes?
Hi, A big HD with all my music and loads of movies died recently and when I want to play a selection of tracks in iTunes now I have to show the app where to find it. iTunes asks to be shown the path to every single track. I'm happy that I made a copy of my music recently with the exact same directory (hierarchy or folders) but I cannot find any function in iTunes where I can tell the app to look for the rest of the music it used to play and thus rebuild its catalogue. Do I really have to redirect iTunes to every single track?? This is a real PITA. Running iTunes version 7.7 and the last version of Tiger on a dual MDD. TIA in advance for your comments. So your itunes catalog is now on a different drive? Have you tried renaming the new drive to be the same as the old one? If that doesn't work, just delete all your iTunes items, and say no when asled iof you want them moved to the trash. When this is done, set iTunes to NOT copy the items to the itunes folder, then drag the media folders form the backup compy you have them on to your iTunes library window. This will re-import everything, in place; essentially rebuilding the metadata catalog, without moving the media files. If it cannot find it's things now, you can disconnect the external drive with the media ot be sure, then delete the library. I think this will lose some organizational data (playlists, perhaps ratings and # of times played.) You need to direct iTunes to Import Library. During this process, you tell iTunes where to find your music and moviesin this case: the path will be your back-up drive. I've the same iTunes on my Smurf, and it's showing stations - all updated to the new URLs. heh. Jinxed it. This morning, the first half dozen categories have entries but the ones below it are now empty. When I open them, they say refreshing - but then it never does. On my QS, I'm getting the same refresh stall in one category. Any change on yours? Hi to all and thanks for keeping this going as I too like Kris have an old G3 powerbook that I use as a clock/radio. 2 actually (1 running OS9 @ 300mhz, and 1 running OS10.3.9 @ 400mhz) as well as other G3's in my collection running their native software. As with Kris, none of these G3's, even the latest one running OS 10.4.11 will connect to any of the apple provided itunes radio stations. Which sadly for me is one of the main things we use these old machines for. When I click on the radio button it brings up the categories but when you click on the triangle to open the list, I get a notice that there is an error and to check my internet connection. The internet is working fine in all areas but this. Now on all of my G4's and G5 systems, the radio stations load up and play fine! Is the problem due to the older itunes software (If so is there a fix) or is this the end of this use (streaming audio radio) for these fine old machines? What we really loved was the great variety of stations that now is gone. I do not have my computers networked together to share as they are in different locations. Also perhaps Dan can let me know what a smurf is as I suspect it is not tech talk as I am familiar with most mac models. Just not sure of all the nicknames as I assume this is. I suppose you could sort your list to gather up the streams together, for a single mass delete. But afaik, there can be no bulk correction. The URLs were indexed abbreviations that now have to be replaced on a station by station basis. It's a PITA to re-drag, but it can be done. I did a dozen+, and discovered that quite a few of my favs are simply not listed there anymore! The moral, I think, is not just not trust Apple. I've got a 3 week old MacBook Pro here that has the problem. Are you looking at the stations as presented in the live Library Radio category, or stations that you've dragged to playlists? The former will show no problem - Apple simply changed the URLs. The latter, in the playlists, show the problem. Those are saved items, that are not dynamically updated. What makes me mad is that if I share my entire iTunes from my G5 to my G3, I had assume it would share the radio playlist and I could either use it directly via sharing, or drag drop or export the working playlist into the older iTunes to recreate a new working radio playlist for the G3, but somehow radio isn't included when you select share my entire iTunes library option. The Library Radio category is live in that it's fetched from Apple's servers when you click the triangles to open the subcategories. I don't actually own one, but a friend of mine has it and enjoys it quite a bit. Videos are fantastic, but when I loaded the same FLAC on both a Galaxy and my Zune and played through same headphones, the Galaxy definitely was worse, although not as bad as the iPod Touch (much better, in fact). Sorry to bring this thread back to topic, but I have been watching with hopes of learning how I can listen to itunes radio on my older G3 laptops since they do not function any longer apparently due to the content of this thread. I am presently living overseas and have really enjoyed getting my news info and music on itunes only to abruptly have in disappear. We have (several) old G3 laptops of various OS setups that we use on a regular basis to stream radio. Our G4 powerbooks all work fine, as do our G5 and newer, however itunes will no longer play *any* radio stations on *any* of the G3 models. I have read here to manually rebuild the list, but not being nearly as technical as those posting, I don't know how to do this. I tried to upgrade our ibook 800mhz by loading itunes v8.x over itunes v7.x and it did nothing to help get the radio back. We have one pc running win xp and removing the program and reloading it fixed the problem, but this didn't work on the ibook. I don't want to remove the program from the older models either as I can't seem to find working downloads for the older itunes programs. Any advice?? You need to refresh the steaming entries you've saved. Go to iTunes' Radio library category, locate your favorite stations and drag them to your playlist again. Or go to your favorite station's web site and locate their link to their streaming radio. It should download a .pls file, that loads into iTunes. In addition let's take Google as an example, when you click on the Shopping icon and follow one of the links, Google is paid a link referral fee and if you purchase something using that link then Google gets and additional fee. Therefore if you are being referred directly to a radio station link from iTunes kts-af.net is being cut out of the fee chain. So expecting that the radio station will be support going back to the old way doesn't have much of a chance. Seems like Apple would prefer to view my iPod as their personal ATM. I've gotten an older [2.5 generation] iPod touch and honestly I've grown to detest the thing. Wifi is incredibly slow, the touch typing is annoying and slow, and not uniform across apps, no streaming internet radio by default. It does nothing *well*, and what it does do--play music I already own---so did my Walkman from 1986 [except that Walkman had also had simple access to free radio]. I hate to be /that guy/, but I recently bought myself a used Zune HD and it works very well with all of my computers (PC and Mac alike). I replaced my older iPod Touch because of what you described: Apple not really supporting anything, either. In addition, the audio quality on my FLACs was subpar; I often blast the tunes off of it on huge speaker systems, and I got tired of FLACs sounding like 128kbps MP3s. The Zune works reasonably well; to sync on Mac, just load up the tiny, low-resource sync utility, point it to a folder of MP3s, and wait a few minutes. Wifi is quite usable, and the web browser is as nice as an older iPhone's when over wifi. I'm not big on games (I have a PSP for that), but there *are* a few nice ones, esp. with some hacking. Streaming Internet radio support is available with a little hacking, and it picks up both FM and HD radio really, really well out of the box. Furthermore, the UI is really nice and easy, and the OLED screen is gorgeous when watching movies on it. The downside is the fact that my used 64GB cost $280 (about the same as a new iPod Touch, right?), and that's the low end for the pricing on these guys (mine had some geometric design etched in the back; plain-backed ones can't be had for under $350). Battery lasts three days of on-again, off-again usage (probably about 15 hours of music, with one movie's worth play) The bad thing is the price, the manufacturer, and the fact that they don't sync natively with macs running pre-10.4 OSes. Still a great way to spend a week's wages, though. Other than that, I really like the Samsung Galaxy players and some of the newer Sandisks for music, esp. if you load Rockbox. The thing is that I have ~250GB of FLACs (with an MP3 copy of each for various purposes) and I need, at the very least, 60GB of storage (to have my favorites in FLAC and a bunch of other stuff in 320 MP3s). I might get a 160GB Classic, but the battery life worries me. Back on topic: I think that iTunes' radio support is mediocre at best, but updating the links manually seems like the only way to go here. I only had about 50 stations to rebuild in a new playlist, but still. That's like a Microsoft move. I am also suspicious why there is no obvious, simple way to add internet radio stations on my iPod. Is there? Seems like Apple would prefer to view my iPod as their personal ATM. I've gotten an older [2.5 generation] iPod touch and honestly I've grown to detest the thing. Wifi is incredibly slow, the touch typing is annoying and slow, and not uniform across apps, no streaming internet radio by default. Just music. No new drivers available. Heard about a glitch that you have to install Burnpatch. Tried that, but the instant you click burn on itunes screen - it just quits and generates an error report for Apple. I called the people who sold me the unit. They said it's itunes problem when using 10.4 and iTunes 9.2. They recommend deleting about 25 plist files. If that doesnt work - create a new iTunes account with Apple. I did remake the playlist with a different name. I even made a few new ones with different music. None of them worked. I'll try rebuilding library next. ipod(s) version 4 onwards require 10.5 , so there is no way round the registration, also the ipods software will not be up-to-date to use with 10.4 and cannot be updated manually. You will need 10.5 on the ac to complete n use or try in find a older ipod say on eBay to use it. iTunes and iPod 4 Touch registration
Hi All - I recently turned over a Quicksilver 867 running 10.4.11, all updates installed, to my step daughter She has purchased an iPod 4 Touch and is trying to get the registration completed. While following registration instructions the system is telling her she needs iTunes 10.1 which I gather doesn't work in Tiger (She can't complete the registration). Is there a way around this ? I don't suppose she could install the latest iTunes version in 10.4.11 (I think we're talking v7.3) ? Since I don't have a clue on most of the high tech stuff out there, I would appreciate some advice or info that will get her down the road... If they have a PC around just take care of it that way as far as itunes 10 its a no go on a 867ghz quicky, its funny I can run 10.1 itunes on a 10 year old IBM thinkpad but try and do it on a older (less then ten years old) powermac or ibook and its a no go? no go on the 7.3 either srry for the apple woes! You should be able to run iTunes v.9.2.1 in Tiger 10.4.11. I'm almost certain this will allow registration and sync with an iPod 4 Touch? If not, I'd bitch to Apple. You can install iTunes 10.1.1 on your G4, but it requires Leopard OS 10.5.8, which is supported for 867MHz G4 and greater. You can install iTunes 10.1.1 on 10.4.11 using Pacifist and it might work? I haven't seen that anyone has tried this yet, so you could be first if you're adventuresome? Yes, 9.2.1 is the final version that runs on G3 CPUs, and the final Tiger version. Then delete the tracks and re-import the CD. The resulting tracks will be free of DRM, but will be lower in quality than the originals, since you're putting them through a lossy codec to re-import thm. Whether or not the difference in quality is acceptable or even noticeable is a personal matter. I find it acceptable for mobile listening, not so when listening on a decent pair of speakers. Then again, I feel the same way about the original iTunes files. iTunes De-authorize issue on a G5
Hi all, Does anyone know how to de-authorize only one computer (out of the 5- station quota) on an iTunes account? My wife reached her limit with a new netbook a while ago - I bumped up her home office with a new (to her) G5, which needs authorizing. So far, the only options I can find are to tolerate the present state, or de-authorize all 5 stations in one fell swoop (which means all prior purchase records are lost-not good). I am sure that some of the stations being tagged are previous older Macs that did not get de-authorized. Any help would be appreciated. Dana, No, you can still authorize or deauthorize computers individually. Open iTunes on the computer you want to deauthorize, go to the Advanced Menu, and then Deauthorize Audible Account. It will ask for your iTunes account handle and password, and you will be all set. And no, even if you deauthorize all computers from your iTunes account, and start from scratch, no purchase will be lost, ever -- unless you delete all your HDDs or something. Even then, it is possible that you could download again your purchases. I am sure that some of the stations being tagged are previous older Macs that did not get de-authorized. I had to deauthorize all my computers once for similar reasons. Rest assured that nothing will happen to your media. The process here would be similar, but in reverse: go to your account, deauthorize all computers, and then authorize one by one using the Advanced menu option in iTunes. Can't purchase from ITunes (error 1008) fix
Back in November 09 I posted that I couldn't purchase from iTunes receiving an error message 1008. I'd upgraded to 9.1 and the only fix that worked was to revert to v 8+ recently I succumbed to the relentless update notices and upgraded to 9.2.1 Everything worked fine until I traveled with the external HD from which I boot and on the road booted from my wife's iBook. When returning to my MiniG4 the previous error reoccured. Found the fix on the Apple iTunes forum. Since updating to itunes 10 Automator doesn't recognise itunes (The action “Get Specified iTunes Items” could not be loaded because the application “iTunes” is the wrong version. It could be that the disc you're trying to burn has a problem. Can you burn something through Disk Utility or from a Burn Folder on your desktop? It could be that the drive has packed up. Off topic a little bit, how are you liking iTunes 10? I made the mistake of letting that abomination install on my work iMac and have since boycotted it on the rest of my systems (PC included). HIDEOUS dock icon aside, I can't stand the sterile gray appearance of the main window. Besides making it harder to find everything, I can't help staring at it and wondering who was smoking what at Apple. It looks like some sort of lazy Linux program from the 90s! Is there a tax on color and nice icons or something? OkI'm off my soapbox... Back on topic, try a different disc and see if that works. If not, try burning through Disk Utility or from a Burn Folder. Does the drive read discs correctly? If all else fails, it might be time to put a new optical drive in it. Latest iTunes update no burn?
Hi all I have a PM G4 MDD and a PM G5 Dual 2.7. Ever since the last iTunes update neither machine will burn a CD in iTunes booted in Tiger, both work OK in Leopard. Anyone else with this problem? I've reinstalled many ways and still no cigar, funny though my TiBook G4 has no problem in Tiger with the new update?? Personally I'd lean towards a bug in the newest iTunes. I made the mistake of installing it on my 13 MBP last night thinking it would be a quick update. WRONG! An hour and a half later, it finally finished Updating Library and proceeded to crash. I run 9.1 on the PeeCee with Windows 7 and ever since the update, it takes about 500 years to import a single track with lots and lots of hard drive thrashing. I have no idea what Apple was thinking when they unleashed these new versions of iTunes on the unsuspecting public, but I'm hoping they fix it soon! I should also point out that once the library has been updated by iTunes 9, they've got you hooked. Would that help? I've run everything I can think of and no change it's a weird problem to me, I tried to boot a CCC from a working machine and I get the same crash. It can't be any of the drives I don't think because it works on the Leopard partitions on both machines. And like I said all was working till the iTunes update to 9.2.
