Re: [Audyssey] moderator close topic was cheatomatic

2007-09-09 Thread Damien C. Sadler
you see i didn't suspect that, and am still a bit confused as to how it can
do that, since it asks you to change the value yourself of the memory you
want to edit. for example
choose the game process
search for 3
it'll ask you to change it
die
search for 2
it'll ask you to change it
die
search for 1
then it knows you're looking for lives. so i can't see how that helps in
changing something in memory that you can't manually change first. but, i've
taken your word for it, and it has now been deleted off of my computer.

Damien Sadler

 Hi Alex and all,
Close this topic immediately. Cheatomatic has been used for allot more

Alex, I don't know if you know cheatomatic is used to crack software or

warning. Don't discuss cracking software on list.

Re: [Audyssey] BG Uno

2007-09-09 Thread blind guy
Yeah, I just had to ask him for it and now I had to provide an
alternate email address for him to send to, since GMail accounts
bounce executables and zipped/compressed files back to the original
sender--in this case, Ian Humfreys.

On 9/9/07, Phil Vlasak [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
 Hi Folks,
I just got BG Uno from Ian this morning as an attached zip file.
Ian Humphreys' Spoonbill Software, Blind-gamers series.
Home of Blind-gamers Uno, BG Uno for short,
an accessible version of the popular card game, Uno.

It uses SAPI 5 for the voice and you play against 3 computer players.

I did not know how to play Uno, so I found instruction on a Uno Wiki:
The Uno deck consists of cards of 4 colors: red, green, blue, and yellow.
The values in each color are 0-9.
There are 3 honor cards in each color, labeled skip, draw two, and reverse.
There are special black cards, wild and wild draw four.
Seven cards are dealt to each player, and the top card of the stock is
exposed to start the discard pile.
If the exposed card has a special ability, it is treated as if the dealer
played that card, and the special effect occurs, skip, draw two, reverse, or
 wild).
At each turn, a player may play a card from their hand that matches the
color or rank of the top exposed card, or play a wild or wild draw four.
If a player has no legal card to play, that player draws the top card of the
stock, and may either play it or place it in their hand.
After playing a single card or drawing, the next player clockwise takes a
turn, unless a reverse is in effect.
The hand ends when a player plays all their cards.

If you would like a copy of this game, email Ian with your full name and
country of residence and he will gladly send you one. This email is being
distributed to approximately 1000 clients so please allow up to one week for
delivery from the date of ordering.

[Audyssey] Accessible soft shutting down - A Different Take

2007-09-09 Thread John Bannick
Actually, Ryan should get mondo credit for even thinking about starting a
computer game company.

Our company's research shows that:

1. It takes about 40 professionals 18 - 24 months and 6 - 10 million
dollars to produce a class A computer game.
2. Class A games (think Doom, etc.) set user demands for quality.
3. If you distribute a game through stores, less than 10% of the price goes
to the developer.
4. If you distribute a game through the Web, only 1% of people who play a
free demo actually buy a game.
5. The vast majority of games lose money.
6. The vast majority of gaming companies lose money (and then get bought or
go away)

On the other hand, if you are coding for people who are blind,

1. There are 250 - 300 blind accessible games available on the Web.
2. Almost all of those are totally free.
3. Comments on the forums indicate that even the free games have trouble
getting people to play them.
4. And, 70 - 80 percent of people who are blind in the US are either
unemployed or underemployed, so there's not a lot of cash there.

Oh, and as Jim, Thomas, et al can attest, coding is hard work.

If our company wasn't

A. selling games to the general market, where we can get some revenue, and
B. run by crazies who like building games and are satisfied with making a
small profit and not trying to get rich

we'd never even attempt to create accessible games.

It's guys like Ryan who ultimately overcome all of the above and make this
a better world, or at least a more entertaining one.

So keep dreaming big, Ryan!
It sets you above the cube slaves.

 But thom my point exactly!
Phil made a huge mistake by writing its an arcade game. If it was
 written
in the manual that sarah is an fps game and that the game comprises more
advanced puzzles, I wouldn't have bought the game.
The manual misled me, now I spent money on something I need zillions of

I bought the game for one reason, because I was under the impression

 its an arcade game.

Hi Josh,

I do very much appreciate all of your complements of my games, but, most of my
games you can not replace the sound files. Partially it is because I work hard
to find, record and edit the sounds and consider them my creation. You know
just like it is a package deal along with the code that I wrote to make the
game work. Another part of it is that I wrote the code to work with the sound
files and it may not work correctly with alternative sound files. You know
like the pitch sounds in the baseball game, the power indicator sound files in
the golf game, the pong ball sound in Pong, the engine sound in Mach 1 etc.

Hi Blind Guy,

Much of the speech in the baseball game is interruptible. Like when it is
listing the number and type of pitches, you can just press the number of the
pitch. Likewise when it is saying press the space bar to step into the
batter's box, just press the space bar. Special key instructions are
interruptible as is the baseball rules file. Don't guess that the plays or
half inning stats are though. But it should not ever hurt to try pressing a
key to see if any speech is interruptible.

Re: [Audyssey] jim's pong and mock1

2007-09-09 Thread Jim Kitchen
Hi Josh,

I guess that you could put Pong or Mach 1 in the Kitchensinc folder and the
game menu program would pick them up and launch them.

But Do not! put them both in the Kitchensinc folder. They have files with the
same names and if you over write either of them the game would then not run.

I have no plans to make a new version of Mach 1. It uses TegoSoft rather than
DirectX and TegoSoft can do some things that DirectX can not. Thus it needs to
be a full install and would then not be along the lines of the rest of the
Kitchensinc text to speech games.

Kitchensinc folder idea. And I think that it was Thomas that mentioned that
with sapi5 the game menu program has the ability to speak the names of the new

Re: [Audyssey] vb6 programming

2007-09-09 Thread Jim Kitchen
Hi Blind Guy,

I have purposely made my games so that you can not change or mod the sound
files. One reason was because games like Mach 1 and Pong were totally sound
based, so if you changed all of the sound files, well then it was no longer the
game that I created at all. One gentleman had done that once and distributed
the files. He did not, but could have easily changed even the sound file that
said By Jim Kitchen

Also as I mentioned some of my games may not run correctly with changed sound
files as the game is written to work with the sound files that it comes with.

BTW My Mach 1 game is accurate to 1 thousandth of a second. That was how we
were able to for years have international races on all different computers and
the times were the same no matter the speed of the computer. But the way that
I wrote the code so that it could be that accurate made it hard to make the car
engine sound better than it does. I gave sample code to many people that ran
the same as the game does and they tried and tried to use better sound files
and they sounded much worse because of the way that the game uses the file.

 Hi nicol,
Yes when I was writing the documentation I was using the Pacman
documentation as guide and mistakenly left the word arcade in.
But that is why I made a demo level so you can try it out before buying
 it.
Many people have played the game and completed it without hints.
I do recommend reading the Harry Potter books first since the games is
 based
 in
that world and a lot of the puzzles are similar to the ones Harry has to
 solve in the books.
In the next patch I will be including a walk through document that will
 help
you with many of the puzzles in the game.
Plus I am adding new spells and making changes to confirm to what was in
 the
 last Harry Potter book.
 sincerely,
 Phil

Re: [Audyssey] Kitchensinc games in vb6

2007-09-09 Thread Jim Kitchen
Hi Damien,

If you mean the Trucker code it is pretty cryptic, but I had looked at it way
back when I first added sounds to it. To turn it into VB6 code pretty much all
I did was to look for and change the print statements to the call to my speech
sub routines. For the most part GWBasic code will run in BB6. Well maybe I
should say that Quick Basic code will run in VB6 as I had converted the Trucker
game from GWBasic to Quick Basic when I added the sounds. But I don't remember
having to do much to it to make that conversion either.

[Audyssey] BG Uno

2007-09-09 Thread Phil Vlasak
Hi Folks,
I just got BG Uno from Ian this morning as an attached zip file.

Hi Blind Guy,
Officially, GW Micro says no. You need 6.1 or higher. However, that
probably is not taking in to account weather user account control is
active or not.
I know when GW Micro worked on Window Eyes 6.1 they had to do some stuff
to make it cooperate with user account control. However, I think 6.0
would run on Vista if UAC was disabled, but that is just a theory.
Anyway, let's get back to gaming. Talking about screen readers is really
drifting from the topic at hand.

[Audyssey] 7-128 Software free demo game book.

2007-09-09 Thread John Bannick
Kelly and Tristan,

As Thomas says, we're using Free Text To Speech from Carnagie Mellon.
The voice is named Kevin, after the fellow who did it.
Kevin says in his notes, Hey, it's the best we could do for free
I personally call it Robbie the Robot on Acid.

We didn't go with SAPI and DirectX because we want the games to be cross
platform.
I'd like to implement a JSAPI (as in Java) solution so we could use all the
neat voices out there, especially the non-English ones.
But that probably isn't going to happen for awhile.

The games do work with JAWS, though.
And the play testers seem to find that OK.

It's good to hear that the Equals key toggling for the Game Voice is
evident to you.
The reason the Game Voice is off to start is that most of the people who
buy the games are not blind.
I worked with the Blind and Visually Impaired Users Group Webmeister here
in Boston, to smooth out the installation and set up process. (Actually,
Steve ripped my ears off over the first one.)

I'm concerned about the delay you mention when you type in something.
Gotta look into that.

Dark,

Actually, I had some concerns about the free games vs. purchased Game Book
issue.
Got Marketing to agree to put some disclaimers, warnings, announcements,
whatever to that effect on the Web site.
The Popcorn games are what are called Loss Leaders, stuff you lose money
on in order to just get people to look at your other stuff.
That's probably not going to change; but maybe someone can offer a better
way to communicate it.

Folks,

As to the demo time out.
We just added free demos, so that whole thing hasn't gelled yet.

What number of days do you suggest?

2007-09-09 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Shaun,
I know that. That is one reason you can disable or bypass UAC when
applications in that case don't register themselves properly with the os.
Actually, I think BSC's trouble is with the software they packed their
games with. If Troopenum was a stand alone VB 6 game it would be fine.
However, Justin packed the exe file, sounds, and everything using a
security tool which that version is obviously not compatible with
Vista's user account control.

Re: [Audyssey] moderator close topic was cheatomatic

2007-09-09 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi,
Very simple. Some games have registration values that signals to the
game engine weather it has been registered or not. Cheatomatic can fake
that in some games, and make the game behave as though it is registered
even though it is not.
Now, does everyone understand why Raul and I want this to be taken off
list immediately? It's much more than changing your status like lives,
health, scores, bla. It is about the ability to fake registration and
changing the number of days on a demo etc to run it without paying for it.

Hi,
Sigh... Look I'm not going to publically or privately reveal how a games
security system can be subverted with this program, and all Raul and I
want is for everyone to close this topic.
All I will say is simply this. Some games have built in demo flags which
allows a gamer to do certain things, some games have number of days
remaining, and this program has the ability to change those values
esentually making a game run like a full product.
Now, let's close the topic.
Thanks.

Damien C. Sadler wrote:
you see i didn't suspect that, and am still a bit confused as to how it can

 choose the game process
 search for 3
it'll ask you to change it
 die
 search for 2
it'll ask you to change it
 die
 search for 1
then it knows you're looking for lives. so i can't see how that helps in
changing something in memory that you can't manually change first. but, i've
taken your word for it, and it has now been deleted off of my computer.

There aren't any roads in Ohio that have no speed limits, but I have

Also as I did mention in an earlier post though the US Interstate

Re: [Audyssey] Accessible soft shutting down - A Different Take

2007-09-09 Thread Tobias Vinteus
Hi all,
I'd like to make some reflections on John's verry
thought-provoking message. I haven't been following the previous
discussion, so my coments only pertains to the message below.

I'm not a developer myself just a blind philosophical Linux-nerd from
Sweden. :-)

On Sun, 9 Sep 2007, John Bannick wrote:

 Our company's research shows that:

 1. It takes about 40 professionals 18 - 24 months and 6 - 10 million
dollars to produce a class A computer game.
But the budget and maybe also the development time would probably be a
little less considering that games for the blind are mostly audio-based.
No need for graphics/animation work etc.

 3. If you distribute a game through stores, less than 10% of the price goes
 to the developer.
A higher percentage would go to the developer of games for the blind, if,
as is the case today, the games are mostly distributed trhough the web,
and marketed through free channels.

I think that the best strategy for people developing game sfor the blind
is to market their games worldwide through all available blindness related
channels - the lbindgamers list perhaps being the most important one.

 4. If you distribute a game through the Web, only 1% of people who play a
free demo actually buy a game.

I dare say the number for potential buyers is slightly higher among
specialized markets like the blind/visual impairment market, especially
considering the relatively few titles available.

On the other hand, if you are coding for people who are blind,

 1. There are 250 - 300 blind accessible games available on the Web.
 2. Almost all of those are totally free.
 3. Comments on the forums indicate that even the free games have trouble
 getting people to play them.
Personally I think that the commercial audio games that are available do
hold a higher quality than the freely games thet are currently available.
Most freebies available seem to be small, research-oriented or
experimental games, which of course are important for the development of
the blind/V-I gaming industry, but perhaps not very appealing for the
average player.

I believe larger games and games of higher quality would attract more
players.

 4. And, 70 - 80 percent of people who are blind in the US are
either unemployed or underemployed, so there's not a lot of cash
 there.

True, but this would pose a greater problem in a more competitive market.
It's true that the buying power of blidn people is less, but the
entertainment options available to spend money on are also less.

Continued happy gaming/developing,
Tobias

ok.
I'm beginning to understand this now. maybe for the baseball and football
games could we change the umpire sound files and in the football game change
the intro and ending sounds and add optional comment sounds that play
comments instead of sapi5. I didn't know that the code was really set in
stone so-to-speak for those sound files until now. but maybe in a new
football or baseball game comment sounds could be played and the umpire
sounds could optionally be replaced and commercials/comments for
baseball/football game and things.

 Hi Blind Guy,

I have purposely made my games so that you can not change or mod the sound
files. One reason was because games like Mach 1 and Pong were totally
sound based, so if you changed all of the sound files, well then it was no
longer the game that I created at all. One gentleman had done that once
and distributed the files. He did not, but could have easily changed even
the sound file that said By Jim Kitchen

Also as I mentioned some of my games may not run correctly with changed
sound files as the game is written to work with the sound files that it
 comes with.

BTW My Mach 1 game is accurate to 1 thousandth of a second. That was how
we were able to for years have international races on all different
computers and the times were the same no matter the speed of the computer.
But the way that I wrote the code so that it could be that accurate made
it hard to make the car engine sound better than it does. I gave sample
code to many people that ran the same as the game does and they tried and
tried to use better sound files and they sounded much worse because of the
way that the game uses the file.

Re: [Audyssey] vb6 programming

2007-09-09 Thread Josh
yep I understand that. But I'd imagine if people would play around and would
have the ability to replace sounds then we could find alternative sounds
that would work or even use sound editors to edit pre-made sounds so they
would work. I'd imagine audasity or wavepad or goldWave would work for this.
Don't get me wrong, I like the sounds you have in there already. But
allowing us to replace them and add new ones would add even more playability
to the games. take your mock1 game for example. people could have sound
packs for it that could represent different themed races. Also in the
football game allowing the game to recognise optional comment files and also
swap the other sounds in the game would let people customise it and then
share their soundpacks with other people to try. I think it would be cool if
the football and golf game would have commercials and comments along with
being able to swap or replace the sounds if you wanted to. But even if this
does become possible when you package the games keep all the original
sounds. replaceing sounds could be an optional thing if you want to, ok, if
not, keep the original sounds.

 Hi Josh,

I do very much appreciate all of your complements of my games, but, most
of my games you can not replace the sound files. Partially it is because
I work hard to find, record and edit the sounds and consider them my
creation. You know just like it is a package deal along with the code
that I wrote to make the game work. Another part of it is that I wrote
the code to work with the sound files and it may not work correctly with
alternative sound files. You know like the pitch sounds in the baseball
game, the power indicator sound files in the golf game, the pong ball
sound in Pong, the engine sound in Mach 1 etc.

[Audyssey] Fw: mods for your games

2007-09-09 Thread Josh
Hi,

I got this message from Jim. It's too bad we can't replace the sounds if we
want to. it might make playing the games more fun because then we could see
who can come up with the best sounds for Jim's games or who can be the most
creative and things. I think that would be fun and then maybe people could
also host their favorite sound packs for jim's games. of course keeping the
oroginal sounds is also good too if people aren't into making modifications
or replacing the sounds with sounds that they like best.

they're... annoying! if there's a way to interupt it then that'd be
cool, because the game is... more important then world of coke or
whatever that is...

Subject: [Audyssey] BG Uno

 Hi Folks,
I just got BG Uno from Ian this morning as an attached zip file.

There are 3 honor cards in each color, labeled skip, draw two, and
 reverse.
There are special black cards, wild and wild draw four.
Seven cards are dealt to each player, and the top card of the stock is
exposed to start the discard pile.
If the exposed card has a special ability, it is treated as if the dealer
played that card, and the special effect occurs, skip, draw two, reverse,
 or
 wild).
At each turn, a player may play a card from their hand that matches the
color or rank of the top exposed card, or play a wild or wild draw four.
If a player has no legal card to play, that player draws the top card of
 the
stock, and may either play it or place it in their hand.
After playing a single card or drawing, the next player clockwise takes a
turn, unless a reverse is in effect.
The hand ends when a player plays all their cards.

If you would like a copy of this game, email Ian with your full name and
country of residence and he will gladly send you one. This email is being
distributed to approximately 1000 clients so please allow up to one week
 for
delivery from the date of ordering.

  BSC Games and Windows Vista

  by

  Thomas Ward

  Introduction

In January 2007 Microsoft unveiled it's newest operating system Windows
Vista. This release of Windows has made many changes in security,
graphics technology, and changes in the way hardware operates with the
operating system. As a result some older programs such as the BSC Games
have had some issues running under Windows Vista.
In this guide I will explain some of the differences between Windows XP
and Vista, and give helpful solutions to making all of the BSC Games
  run
  properly under Windows Vista.

  Changes in DirectX

Since the release of DirectX 8 DirectX has shipped with a Visual Basic
  6
library called dx8vb.dll. This file is necessary for any Visual Basic 6
application to gain access to the Microsoft DirectX API, and without it
none of the games out there written in Visual Basic 6 will operate.
When Windows XP was released it shipped with Microsoft's 9.0 and had
backwards compatibility libraries installed for DirectX 8.0. It also
included dx8vb.dll for Visual Basic 6 applications.
When Windows Vista was released it shipped with Microsoft's new DirectX
10 technology. Unlike earlier versions of DirectX version 10.0 does not
ship with any support for Visual Basic 6. So the first thing you must
  do
as a gamer is install the missing DirectX dependencies.
If you have access to a copy of Windows XP open up
  c:\Windows\System32
and back up dx7vb.dll and dx8vb.dll to a cd, back up hard drive,
  etc...
Now, copy dx7vb.dll and dx8vb.dll to your Windows Vista
  c:\Windows\System32
directory. Vista's user account control feature will ask you to
  continue
or cancel this operation. Tell Vista to continue. Once complete you
should have a compatible DirectX library for your accessible games.

  User Account Control

By now anyone who has been using Windows Vista is aware of Vista's new
security feature, the user account control, which is responsible for
managing who has access to secured programs, files, installation
  rights,
etc. The user account control feature built into Windows Vista is a
major step forward in Windows security, and should prove useful in
cutting down on malicious software like viruses, worms, spyware, and so
  on.
One way that UAC, (user account control,) accomplishes this is by
looking for digital signing. For example, if a Vista user was to stick
the Microsoft Office 2007 cd into the disk drive UAC would pop up and
inform the user that Microsoft Office 2007 setup.exe attempted to run.
It would then inform the user that it was digitally signed by
  Microsoft.
UAC would offer two buttons allow and don't allow. Pressing space on
allow will of course allow setup to continue as normal. However, what
happens when an older program isn't able to give a digital signature?
Usually, older programs that Vista is really unsure about UAC will
prompt the user to allow, or for a standard user, it will prompt for
  the
administrator password. In either case it usually isn't a major issue.
However, with some BSC Games like Troopenum when it is run UAC blocks
the game from properly initializing. the user may receive an error such
as: Error 1566 confusion/insanity found in encrypt module.. If this is
the case you will have to bypass the user account control while playing
the game. Fortunately, doing so is very easy.
Use control escape to open the start menu. Arrow to the all programs
button, and press space. The all programs tree view will open. Arrow to
the games icon. Rather than pressing enter on the games icon press the
Windows context key found on most keyboards between the right Windows
  key and the right control

i Gary,

Hey Tom, what about those files that says something about not being
 registored in eror messages.
I am getting this type for creating activex type on fo contents.
If I ran the program undr Admin would this may take of the problem of
 genating activex web pages.
 End quote

I am not certain, but it is very possible it might solve the problem. As
I stated in the BSC Games guide UAC blocks programs from initialising if
it believes the application is attempting to do some action that might
compromise the system. Especially, if the application has not been
digitally signed and properly registerd in the system registry. So
running the game as administrator usually works around UAC and let's it
know that you are going to go over it's head and run it anyway.

 Hi Damien,

If you mean the Trucker code it is pretty cryptic, but I had looked at it
way back when I first added sounds to it. To turn it into VB6 code pretty
much all I did was to look for and change the print statements to the call
to my speech sub routines. For the most part GWBasic code will run in
BB6. Well maybe I should say that Quick Basic code will run in VB6 as I
had converted the Trucker game from GWBasic to Quick Basic when I added
the sounds. But I don't remember having to do much to it to make that
 conversion either.

Re: [Audyssey] BSC Games and Vista Solutions.

2007-09-09 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Actually, officially and unofficially anything less than Window-Eyes 6.1
will not run on Vista. It was not just the UAC support which had to be
developed. There are a lot of other under-the-hood changes which took
place between version 6.0 and 6.1 to make it Vista compatible. Even if
you disable UAC, you still will not be able to successfully run Window-Eyes.

Thomas Ward wrote:

 Hi Blind Guy,
Officially, GW Micro says no. You need 6.1 or higher. However, that
probably is not taking in to account weather user account control is
 active or not.
I know when GW Micro worked on Window Eyes 6.1 they had to do some stuff
to make it cooperate with user account control. However, I think 6.0
would run on Vista if UAC was disabled, but that is just a theory.

That's why I hate stock muds, because there's no variation. Take new moon

Godwars2, advanced battle system and movement system, nothing stock about

 Well Raul.
That's a sure way to put it, when it comes down to it really. Never

But the games are fun and awesome, and I just like to play them all the
 time.

Indeed. Discworld isn't a stock mud either I don't think, well it's LP and
LP codebases are great depending on how far the administrators take it.

We need muds with a totally custom codebase, like Evryan. That mud is
 acceptional.

Or at least a Kill everything you see mud where the combat system isn't,
Your slash annihilates the green dragon.
 The green dragon shreds you.
You throw a fireball at the green dragon.

That's why I hate stock muds, because there's no variation. Take new moon
for example. Some of the best combat descriptions I've ever seen. and
Godwars2, advanced battle system and movement system, nothing stock about
it. There's about 10 good muds out there total, and sadly even those get
 old.

I guess that you are not quite getting what I am trying to say. Ok say you buy
a painting and bring it home and notice a part of the picture that you are not
fond of, do you whip out a paint brush and paint over the part that you don't
like with what you think should go there or that you think that you can paint
in there better? Like the same thing with a cassette tape, do you sing or play
over parts because you think that you can do better than the original artist?
Or do you leave the artists work the way that they produced it? To me that is
what you are doing to my games when you modify them. You know either modifying
the sounds or cracking the code and changing it because you think that you can
make it better.

 Jim

Do you take a boom box and blast it at a free live concert in the park because
you think that it sounds better than the band?

Hi Josh,
Yes, but what Jim is saying in his own way is that in his opinion when
yu change the sounds in his games it is like the game is no longer his
game. He feels as if you are creating a different game by replacing the
sounds.
I don't feel that way, yu don't feel that way, but Jim does feel that
way which is what we have to respect.

Josh wrote:
yep I understand that.

Hi Jim,
As a fellow developer I do understand where you are coming from with
this. No one likes to have their worked changed or trashed unless they
have specifically said someone could do so.
During the development of STFC I got a lot of requests to change this or
that. While I didn't mind some of them after a while it got to be over
welming, because the more I tried to please everyone elses requests the
game was no longer my idea, doing what I wanted the game to do, and I
was not at all happy with 1.0/1.2. In STFC 2.0 I plan to return to my
original idea for the game which I think will make me happier for it.
To us as game developers our games are our stories, our work of art, and
changing it can make it less than it was to us personally.

Re: [Audyssey] Accessible soft shutting down - A Different Take

2007-09-09 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi John,
This is some intresting research, and I'd like to put in my own thoughts
here.

 Our company's research shows that:

 1. It takes about 40 professionals 18 - 24 months and 6 - 10 million
dollars to produce a class A computer game.

Well, the only thing the audio game companies have produced to date that
would be anything near class A would be Shades of Doom, Tank commander,
Sarah and the Castle of Witchcraft and Wizardry and Rail Racer which are
truly amung the best games out there for the blind. They also had long
development cycles to be braught to market.
One of the things keeping those games from true class A quality is
having some cut scenes, character voices, and graphics which would jack
the price up for such games.
However, having played the class A games out there for the sighted
market I can see the quality difference, and we as blind developers have
a ways to go.

 2. Class A games (think Doom, etc.) set user demands for quality.

Even in the blind market that is true. I often hear people like Josh
going on and on about rip the sounds from this or that game, and make a
blind clone of game x. Problem is not only is that illegal some of those
games are not practical to program by one developer.
Some of our younger members of this list go out and play around with
Mortal Combat, Tomb Raider, etc with their friends, return to the blind
gaming world, and wonder why there are no truly class A games like that
here in our comunity. So it is those types who is driving professional
developers like myself to jack up the quality of our games to a higher
level of quality.

 3. If you distribute a game through stores, less than 10% of the price goes
 to the developer.

Welcome to the evils of capitalism. (Grin)
In the case of blind companies where blind companies are smaller that
percentage would be higher, but stores would never sell our games anyway
because they are to a limited and specialised market.
The closest we have to a store is Indipendant Living Aids, Anne Morris,
Maxi Aids, etc which sell blind related products to disabled users all
over the USA and probably the world.

 4. If you distribute a game through the Web, only 1% of people who play a
free demo actually buy a game.

I'm not surprised. Demos are a nice way to show off a product, but I'm
discovering if you give a user just one level or two levels to play they
will play them over and over until they either get tired of the game, or
they actually break down and buy it.
However, in the case of blind companies the web is the cheapist way to
market our products, and do to the lack of games to choose from
interested parties do eventually buy the games or will out right crack them.

 5. The vast majority of games lose money.

Oh, yeah. That happens here in the blind market as well. If we spend
allot of money to boost the quality of a game some buyers will buy the
game, maybe the dev will break even, and sometimes we get more, and
sometimes less.
Allot of our losses results from software piracy which is sadly a dark
reality amung the blind comunity. Allot more blind people have no quoms
about thinking, I don't have the cash for this or that so I will just
crack it or find a crack for it., than we really want to admit.
When David Greenwood increased security in Shades of Doom 1.2 he saw
users that were sending in product keys claming them to be the users own
only to discover that they were using someone elses 1.0 key. I don't
clearly remember the figures, but I believe GMA gained 40 new sales,
because the crackers who were cracking 1.0 couldn't easily do it for 1.2.
As I said I don' clearly remember what David said about this, but the
fact was he believed there was several blind users cracking Shades of
Doom, and as it turned out there were allot of crackers out there.
Upgrading the security did at least allow him to regain some of those
lost sales.

On the other hand, if you are coding for people who are blind,

 1. There are 250 - 300 blind accessible games available on the Web.

Sadly, most of those games being counted are free experimental games
which are valuable in that they help instruct developers about
accessibility in games, but they aren't very high quality.
Some of the blind accessible games are muds and web based RPG forums
which are for everyone not just blind.
When we come down to it the commercial games that are of reasonable high
quality like Sarah, Packman Talks, Tank Commander, Shades of Doom, are
few and far between.

 2. Almost all of those are totally free.

Yes, allot of them are free. However, as mentioned previously of them
fall in the free experimental or my first game quality which usually
leaves us with the taiste of a really cheap game, and very little feel
of playing something near class A.
For example, BSC has a freegame called Sonic Match. It is ok to play,
but it isn't exactly anyones favorite game. Compare it to BSC commercial

Hi Gary,
That error you are recieving is indicative of a missing DX8VB.dll file
which I have mentioned many times does not ship with Windows Vista. You
have to get it from somewhere else and drop it in
c:\Windows\System32
in order to get games like Ten Pin Alley to work.

Ten Pen alley been a pain for me.
I have to keep the disk near just in case I need it when I run Turbo Turney
software. It will ask for the Ten Pin Alley disc cause it could not find a
file. Then it wants to install Ten Pin Alley.
I thought I may got rid of this strange problem with my new computer, but

Hi Raul,
Thanks for that little tidbit. I know in my own screen reader project I
am having to make exceptions for the way Vista does things so i
completely understand what GW Micro had to go through to convert Window
Eyes from the way Windows XP does things to the way Vista does things.
In any case disabling UAC isn't a smart security move as I rather like
it's level of security. Especially, UAC's ability to do lockouts on
accounts where a end user enters an incorrect password more than tthree
or four times. That really cracks down on any random cracker coming
along with a brute force attack program and cracking into an account.

Raul A. Gallegos wrote:
Actually, officially and unofficially anything less than Window-Eyes 6.1
will not run on Vista. It was not just the UAC support which had to be
developed. There are a lot of other under-the-hood changes which took
place between version 6.0 and 6.1 to make it Vista compatible. Even if
you disable UAC, you still will not be able to successfully run Window-Eyes.

2007-09-09 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Gary,
Vista's user account control is customisable, but at the moment I can't
remember the program that controls that. I want to say secpol, but not sure.
Anyway there are different levels you can set user account control to
like: automatically elivate, don't elivate, prompt for password, and
prompt to elivate. Under the admin options for the administrator you can
set everything to automatically elivate, but leave other users of the
system to prompt to elivate or prompt for password. I only recommend
doing this if you are only using the administrator account for system
admin tasks rather than as a normal user playing mp3s, browsing the web,
reading mail, bla.
Anyway, part of the reason I know this stuff is I am personally
studdying to get my MSCE, Microsoft Certified Engineering, license. I
hope once I enroll in the MSCE program, get my license, it will open
doors and new jobs that would otherwise be closed to me. Having a
Microsoft engineering license gives one allot more respect in the
business world than just an Associates degree or BS in Computer Science.
The sad thing is there is a huge difference of knolege required for a
novis computer user and the engineer/specialist. The novis will likely
go out and buy a book like the Idiots Guide to Windows, Windows for
Dummies, etc which are great books for helping them get the internet
going, send and receive email, customising their desktop, etc however
never gets into how to do important things like configuring system
security, user account control and user management, changing system
configurations, customising system services, and on and on we could go.
It would be my job as a tech support engineer, administrator, etc to
know all those things.
One good example of this was last week when I reinstalled Vista my wife
accidently typed in Tom Ward for my name, and it showed up in the
registry as Tom Ward. However, I registered Vista under my full name. I
had to open the Vista registry editor, and change my name and company
keys sow that product activation would have my correct name and company
name. Sometimes as an administrator you are called upon to do stuff like
that. It would have been foolish to completely reinstall Vista just to
change the name, and the solution took maybe two minutes tops by editing
the registry, but a novis wouldn't know that. They would probably assume
they screwed it up, and do the entire install from scratch.
