[Audyssey] New games to play!

2008-01-04 Thread Katie Madison
Hi all, While visiting a website, I found a site with shockwave based games for
the blind. The site is www.accessiblewebgames.com. Please note that shockwave
player is required, as well as the SAPI5 tts engine. Both of these are free.
There are many games to play and I can't mention them all, but it's worth a
look. If you have any questions, please contact me privately if you need to.
Happy Gaming!

I have. You have to enter your key on the first screen when the game
opens,
if you're using jaws you can use the jaws cursor and click on unlock the
full version. There's a ship with jump engines in every faction,
 Federation
is the paladin, Syndicate is the Shadowcat, etc.

[Audyssey] Raceway for Mac or Linux

2008-01-04 Thread John Bannick
Thomas,

Here are some technical accessibilty notes on porting your game.

1. Java talks to screen readers via the Java Access Bridge. The J A B does
not work with all screen readers, specifically Window-Eyes. I've talked
with Clarence at G W, and this isn't likely to change soon. The J A B may
work with Dolphin's screen reader. Dark was going to do an experiment
awhile ago to test that. The J A B does not work with the speech part of
ZoomText.

2. BTW. There are ways to talk to TextAloud and ReadPlease that do not use
the J A B. But they are awkward.

3. There are some undocumented tricks to getting the J A B to work with
Java. Nothing grotesque, just practical stuff. If you do decide to go that
way, I can show them to you since I've been doing it for our Game Book for
years.

4. The FreeTTS speech engine does allow you to change pitch. This is what I
do in our Inspector Cyndi in Newport mystery games in order to have women
and men, young and old, sound different. Funny thing is that when Steve and
Marsha at the Visually Impaired and Blind Users Group here in Boston were
playing the Inspector Cyndi in Newport games recently, they turned off JAWS
and used the FreeTTS because they said they preferred it sound because A.
it was more reliable and B. it had different pitches.

5. There is a S A P I interface to the FreeTTS engine. I explored it
briefly, but ran out of time. If that could be made to work, then you'd
likely have access to any S A P I compliant voice on whatever target
system. If you do go that way, I'd love to work with you on it because I'd
like that for our games.

Regardless, I'll be real interested to see what an experienced coder can do
with this. I code on all three operating systems and would love to port our
stuff. (If Marketing would just give me the time.)

 Hi Raul,
Hmmm... Interesting question. I could imagine it now. Go to a pinball
arcade, I mean a real reall pinball arcade, and while the ball is flying
around the table, bonging bells, banging bumpers, pattles flipping like
mad, the player pushes a button on the machine and every thing just
stops in place. That would have been so awesome back in the day when
there were real pinball machines around.
I can remember when I was 7 or 8 they had out a Kiss pinball machine I
use to play like mad. If you got a high score or so on the machine would
start blasting Rock And Roll All Night and Party Every Day.You would try
and hit guitars, drumbs, and other rock instruments with the ball as
well as numbered scores. Now, that would be a cool table to have for ESP
Pinball, but I suppose copyrights might not make it very likely.

Re: [Audyssey] rail racer

2008-01-04 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hi. You might want to contact Che who is the person responsible for
generating keys. It's possible that he only reads gamers list messages
when he gets to that folder if he has them organized like that. Then
again, it's possible he reads personal email before list mail regardless
of the organization. In any case, contacting him directly is usually the
best approach.

Jeremy Gilley said the following on 1/3/2008 8:00 PM:
 Hello all,
I bought rail racer like 2 days ago, and I am just curious if anyone knows
how long the processing is to get the key to get the full version takes?
any information would be appreciated... thanks

I had to put my key in. You had to click a spot which said register game or
unlock game. There was also a link to continue with the free trial. One way
that the author of the game recommended to get the music to stop was to get
the game to crash and then run it again. The game would then give you an
opportunity to check the box to run it in protected mode. This way, the loud
music won't play and life will be far easier. Good luck to everyone trying
out the game.

Re: [Audyssey] Enabling Voice Over

2008-01-04 Thread Søren Jensen
No. He needs to press fn, command f5. The MacBooks are set to automaticly
hold down the fn key while pressing the command key as default. This makes
it easyer to ajust some hardware settings like display brightness and the
sound volume. So fn, command and f5 will enable Voiceover. If you just press
command f5, you'll just turn up the volume. This confused me then I tried a
Mac computer in a shop.

You need the keystroke command and f5. You might want to read some
of the shortcuts you need for navigating so you can make the most of
your time and so you get frustrated less. This will let you use the
Mac more and not just leave frustrated having done nothing.

Re: [Audyssey] Accessible self-defence

2008-01-04 Thread Christopher Bartlett
Hmmm, I'm not sure I agree that locks/pressure points are more
effective, and a throw would be best done in such a way as to stay in
contact with the throwee, just in case they get back up. The problem
with relying on locks and pressure points is that they rely on pain
for effectiveness. Get a meth-head hopped up on everything from
under the sink and pain isn't an effective deterrent. A properly
applied lock affects the structure and physically prevents movement,
but only if the thug isn't willing to sacrifice a body part to get you.

Now at a high enough level of mastery, you will prevail even against
the unwilling with a lock. I'm skeptical of pressure points; I can
endure a lot of the ones that are supposed to put someone down; pain
is just pain. If you're talking about things like Dim Mak (sp) that
are supposed to short-circuit qi flow, that's beyond my experience
and I can't comment.

Finally, I urge people to study full martial arts rather than
strictly self-defense, because you get a broader context for what you
are doing, and learn principles that can be applied when the
situation goes pear-shaped and leaves the training scenario
behind. (Insert audio clip of John Clees instructing students to
attack him with a banana here.) Self-defense courses are usually
short and scenario-based, which is all well and good if you encounter
the exact scenario, but the gods help you if you get taken outside of
scenario parameters.

And as for strange environments, there are ways to minimize that
problem, which you point out quite correctly. There are ways to move
your feet so as to account for rough terrain, changes in level etc
while remaining on balance. This is one of the first things we
learned in Daito Ryu. It might sound odd, but I spent two months
learning how to walk again at the age of thirty-five.

Re: [Audyssey] Accessible self-defence

2008-01-04 Thread Christopher Bartlett
There's modern fencing which is done on a strip, and then there is
the medieval fencing that I have studied which is done wherever;
think D'Artagnon or Inigo Montoya. I'll save a longer discussion of
how to do this for the other list if it comes into being, but suffice
it to say that no, you don't necessarily need to see your opponent's
blade. It's not easy, but there are ways to move to seek tactile
contact that also defend you until you know what you're doing. I've
managed to catch my teacher with a proper lunge more than once.

about the rules of fencing? Is fencing where you're both on a mat with

Re: [Audyssey] Lasers in Monty?

2008-01-04 Thread Bryan
That's why there are updates. Perhaps in a future update, just as long as it
remains as true to the game's original atmosphere as possible. And actually
if I remember right the original Atari game had forcefields and warp
platforms as well, although I couldn't say for sure having never played it.

I couldn't see lazers in Monty, however something like a mini-volcano might
work. However I think Tom's far enough in development that too many
addditions at this point won't be happenning.

True, but there is an electric field to get through, and there are warp
platforms. But, to me, lasers would further detract from the authenticity
of the game and take away from the, is the word I'm looking for,
 atmosphere?? of the game.

Hi Tom and all,
Here's an idea that came to mind when I was playing Monty before.
Couldn't there be lasers in some places of the game that fire in
 certain
intervals and you have to run through them when they're not doing
anything? Would be another cool challenge in the game! What do
 you
think?

I had to put my key in. You had to click a spot which said register game or
unlock game. There was also a link to continue with the free trial. One
 way
that the author of the game recommended to get the music to stop was to
 get
the game to crash and then run it again. The game would then give you an
opportunity to check the box to run it in protected mode. This way, the
 loud
music won't play and life will be far easier. Good luck to everyone trying
 out the game.

Re: [Audyssey] smugglers3?

2008-01-04 Thread simon.dowling
you bring up the trade menu to buy and sell things, the way it works, is you
got a list of things, the lower the number the lower the cost is to buy, for
instance on one planet robots may only cost as little as 3 credits, so you
buy them depending on how much room you have, then the next planet may be
selling them for 200 credits so you just sell them for the biggest profit.
using hal to play, you hit the space bar on a product, then you just hit the
buy button.
same as everything else you have to select it with the space bar, did try it
with jaws, but had no luck in figuring it out.
people with hal, just use virtual focus and make sure you have focus lock
turned on, this way you will stay in vf.

clicking and the like and it's not always clear where you have to trade

for example. Any ideas/help would be welcome. Especially on how to turn

the music down

I only got it a few days ago but noticed in the tutorials there's a
lot of Jaws cursor work. Need to try it more though.

Re: [Audyssey] Enabling Voice Over

2008-01-04 Thread Robin Kipp
Hey all,
Thanks for all the replies! Sorry for posting an off-topic message here,
but I had to know that really quickly. I just returned from the store
and am quite impressed by how well it works. The only problem now is
that Voice Over is only available in English and not in German. And
since the English version of MAC OS is not included on the German Apple
DVD, I guess what I'll do is order the MAC Book in America so I have the
English os. This won't be a problem for me, the only thing I'll have to
think about will be how to read German E-mail and websites with an
English synthesicer. But well, everyone was quite impressed how easy it
was for me to use the MAC Book after pressing 3 keys. Oh and btw, forgot
to turn it off, lol. Thanks for your help!
Robin

thanks very much for your interest and I'm hoping as well to have
some good conversations about self defense as a VI person...

For myself, I've had some martial arts training in addition to self
defense courses both specifically for VI and not.

One of my favs which is mainstream, was model mugging, which relies
on the attackers wearing completely padded suits so that the
participants can defend themselves without pulling punches or worrying
about hurting the instructors...

Have you had any exp with self defense or martial arts?...

Have a great day and thanks for starting us off!!!...

Ah, well finding the teleporter means you have to use your ears and you
have to learn the area you are in. Of course, the teleporter won't do
you any good if you have not caught all the monkeys, so there is no real
trick other than just practicing.

Re: [Audyssey] Accessible self-defence

2008-01-04 Thread Mich
hi Cara well no I have not had any experience with self defense. I think
though why the topic has interested me is because I live above a dance
studio. When the people are not dancing they are doing Tike Wan Doe sorry if
I spelled that wrong. I have never asked though if I could join since I am
not sure how well they would deal with trying to teach a blind person etc.
well many thanks for the nice warm welcome. from Mich Verrier from New

   Hi Mich, welcome!

Well it looks like you get a prize! lol! You're the first
poster! Congratulations! (insert huge Monty Python style fanfare here)

thanks very much for your interest and I'm hoping as well to have
some good conversations about self defense as a VI person...

 Smiles,

 Cara :)

NVDA works with java, I think, I could be wrong, but it has enough support

Java has it's own gaming APIs, the Java accessibility API, which happens

Ah, well finding the teleporter means you have to use your ears and you have
to learn the area you are in. Of course, the teleporter won't do you any
good if you have not caught all the monkeys, so there is no real trick other
 than just practicing.

Re: [Audyssey] Multiplatform Games

2008-01-04 Thread Valiant (on laptop)
Hi.
I do happen to know macs run windows all right. In fact, I've heard claim
that g4s and this like that turn out to run vista a looot better than pcs
designed for windows do, how stpid and not surprising.
Anyway, so if I'm a mac only user, and I wanna play rail racer, or gtc, or
lw, or sod, or soundrts, oh wait take that back, it already supports, I
gotta figure out how to install windows rofl? That means mom gets to sit
here with me for about an hour, then I gotta find drivers and raaa, how easy
and supportive. If that's what you meant, me thinks those who develop games
that should run slick and smooth on multiple operating systems, maybe even
miniature OS's, like windows mobile or simbion or something, although I'm
betting simbion can't run something like rail racer but the thing, that
could open up lots of gates for cash and make the developer's work more
worth while. not to mention, if I had me Linux, I just might by god stick to
it, since even though I'm a native windows user, I don't find it too all
fired brilliant and wonderful and run-perfect and all that. I bet ubuntu
doesn't screw up every time I try to connect to my very own home wireless
network, or bulk when I plug it into the rj45 jack at school and end up
giving me no access to the internet, or crash when I try to shut it down, or
catch a virus despite precautions that's eating up executable files on my
server's hard drive and making programs useless and avading my attempts to
remove it, or crashing when I attempt to resume from hibernation, let alone
failing to hibernate or stand by all together, or giving me the BSOD and not
talking about it to me, or installing updates after I go to shut down, only
I can tell it hasn't shut down, and I have to guess at whether it's properly
installing updates, or if it froze up after my screen reader got killed and
me hit the power button when maybe it says bright and clear up there on that
screen, Do not shut down your computer until this process is finished, or
run 60 to 95 processes at a time for a brand spanking new vista machine!
Slowing my computer to a crawl, even before I start to install my own
programs that I want to use, or have the screen reader reading text in a
background window while I'm trying to check email, or produce a wild case of
system dings when I hit control immediately after entering message body so
as to start right off using arrows to read, those last two are jaw's fault
but they count as far as I'm concerned. And I haven't even started on about
200 dollars for a good OS, and then somewhere getting unnervingly close to
2000 dollars for the stupid screen reader if you want professional access
and remote desktop, ok granted window-eyes is less than half that but now
add 1 to 500 dollars for Microsoft office, unless you wanna go download open
office.org, sure that'll work, except now the screen reader won't read the
thin worth a hoot, or another 4 to 500 dollars for a good music mixing
software that can do decent recording and crap, yeah I could go on for a
looot longer about how if I found Linux to be a better solution I could
switch to it, and then be thrilled if some of those wonder game developers
started porting games to my lap so I wouldn't have to touch windows again!
Anyway, the point is, as far as it goes with me, if developers start making
games work with other operating systems, they'll get no complaint from me.
Also, windows users, I'm as much a windows user as any of you are, quite
likely anyway, but darned if I wouldn't switch to something else if it
proved to be a better option, and having games available on alternative
operating systems is a starter.H

 Hi Kuvvosh,
The Linux you want to get is Ubuntu Linux 7.10 found at
 http://www.ubuntu.com
Perhaps sometime I should do a blind cool tech pod cast on doing a Linux
install with speech which is very accesible. You basically boot the cd
rom, log in, start orca, let it log out, log back in restart orca, and
you can do the install with speech. There are a few steps involved
getting the setup going with speech, but it is easy after you do it the
first time or have someone walk you through the setup once.

Re: [Audyssey] Accessible self-defence

2008-01-04 Thread Valiant (on laptop)
Hi.
Karate? I've read up on it a bit by chance, and it appears that it's similar
to judo in sorts. I recall it mentioned you hold on to your opponent's gui,
I assume that's like the coat with it's lapel type thingy, only it's named
differently in this case when you're going to start. after that, I believe
things change, as they do in wrestling and judo, so that contact is
maintained as much as possible. The moves are just different. If contact is
broken, the action stops, and is resumed again, in proper contact.

I could be off my marks on that, but I took me a stab, guessing in dim and
cloudy light where the target was.

 Hi all,
This might be off-topic, but I just don't know where to ask and it's sort
 of
a question of having fun or entertainment for blind people. I'd like to
 know
are Tai Chi and karate accessible for blind people? I know blindys can do
Judo, but what other martial arts courses have any totally blindys done
 and
did any adaptation need to be made considering you were practicing with
sighted persons, like did the teacher come round and demonstrate the
 moves?
 Thanks
 Ari

[Audyssey] self destruct

2008-01-04 Thread 0722001794
I really hope damion is going to work on self destruct. Damion sadler from x
site interactive said long ago that jason from closed down xl studios gave him
the source code for self destruct and that damion may modify the game. Damion
also promised that he will definitely work on self destruct. Self destruct is
actually an excellent game except for level10. I feel self destruct should also
have a supply room like in treasure hunt that gets restocked. Movement in self
destruct is much simpler than treasure hunt. Its just level10 that is a
backpain because the urchins moves too fast and the player's moves is very
limited. If only level10 of self destruct can be made slightly easier i will be
very greatful. To run around the grid in level10 trying to escape the urchins
until i found lots of health and ammo or the key to room0 is impossible because
regardless of how quickly i tap the arrow keys the urchins is to fast for me
and 40 moves is too little. My suggestion is that the grid should have 4
restock rooms with randomly moves, health, ammo, or both placed at random
locations. I can even beat the urchin lord after level10, its only level10 that
is impossible. On easy difficulty its still possible to kill urchins easily
because if urchins enters room91 they receive a fatal shock so if my health or
ammo gets little i can just hide in room91.

Hi Valiant,
Since general operating system and screen reader tech is off topic for
the list I won't go into any depth on list, but I can always be asked

they just give up.

didn't get very far, cause I was a bit uninformed. I didn't know about
hitting alt+f2 and then typing orca. So I was stuck with a sighted wise guy
trying to figure it out. He's a computer geek, but he didn't make it

Re: [Audyssey] Raceway for Mac or Linux?

2008-01-04 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Valiant,
Yes, that is correct. If someone gets NVDA 0.5 it will work fine with
the Java access bridge 2.0. In fact, I am using NVDA right now for my
swing based Java applications under Windows and Orca for the same apps
under Linux. So for games NVDA is a great alternative for any screen
reader with no Java support.

Valiant (on laptop) wrote:
 Hi.
NVDA works with java, I think, I could be wrong, but it has enough support
to run with open office.org, window eyes users unhappy about maybe this
thing not supporting window eyes? could just download NVDA and use that if
you need it, just a thinks.

Re: [Audyssey] Multiplatform Games

2008-01-04 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Valiant,

Quote
I do happen to know macs run windows all right. In fact, I've heard claim
that g4s and this like that turn out to run vista a lot better than pcs...
End quote

That is interesting news, and I am glad Mac OS's vm software is so
good. Though, that in the end is beside the point, because there will be
additional cost for Windows, Jaws, etc which makes running a Mac or
Linux kind of pointless.

Quote
Anyway, so if I'm a mac only user, and I wanna play rail racer, or gtc, or
lw, or sod, or soundrts, oh wait take that back, it already supports, I
gotta figure out how to install windows rofl? That means mom gets to sit
here with me for about an hour, then I gotta find drivers and raaa, how easy
and supportive.
End quote

Yes, exactly. I can't tell you how many times I have had to ask someone
sighted to sit by me as I did a Windows install, and Mac users and Linux
users left Windows for that exact reason. It is a totally different
experience if you can just buy a new operating system, boot the install
cd, and begin installation with speech.

Quote
Also, windows users, I'm as much a windows user as any of you are, quite
likely anyway, but darned if I wouldn't switch to something else if it
proved to be a better option, and having games available on alternative
operating systems is a starter.
End quote

My thoughts exactly. Unfortunately, Linux and Mac don't have the same
number of accessible applications as Windows yet, but as interest and
the user base grows so will the applications for us grow and improve.
This has been one of Mac and Linux's failing points. Allot of people try
them, say there isn't this this and this, and then quit. They don't see
they have to be using that os and express a desire for this this and
this in order to show there is a growing sector of people sick of
Windows only access software and apps.
The argument there isn't enough users is a circular one, and it is the
norm responce from the general computer development base. Oh, hum...
There aren't that many Mac users, Linux users, to worry about them. I'll
wait until there is a big comunity of Linux users, Mac users, etc...
New users come along and say, Oh, hum... this os doesn't have this,
this, and this. Then, they quit. So this requires responce from both sides.

Hi Lisa,
Yes, it most certainly is. I have been doing some research the past
week on this very issue, and what we want to do isn't easy, but
shouldn't be extremely difficult either.
The main issue is just finding the proper stuff to work with Java to do
force feedback for Raceway, getting FreeTTS for text to speech, joal or
something for audio, and so on. FRom all accounts doing a cross platform
game should be doable.

Hi,
Yeah, that is a pretty good list of Python books. I haven't read all of
those, but I have read quite a few of them and would recommend any of
them for a new game developer thinking of using Python.
As it happens I am reading the Java series of books Learning Java, Java

get my skills back up to current standards. I have always loved
O'reilly's programming training materials. They are first rate for any

Re: [Audyssey] self destruct

2008-01-04 Thread shaun everiss
aah.
if you say so.
To tell you the truth no official news has come from the internal team
communications or other external stuff but then I havn't actually gone to the
external x-sight site for ages.
So I decided to check it wout.
there is a nice php error on the main page for hits and well no news.
so it looks like nothing is coming.
my last work for x-sight was an outstanding project I had to do a few months
ago.
However I have not seen any actual news yet.

At 08:04 a.m. 5/01/2008, you wrote:
I really hope damion is going to work on self destruct. Damion sadler from x
site interactive said long ago that jason from closed down xl studios gave him
the source code for self destruct and that damion may modify the game. Damion
also promised that he will definitely work on self destruct. Self destruct is
actually an excellent game except for level10. I feel self destruct should
also have a supply room like in treasure hunt that gets restocked. Movement in
self destruct is much simpler than treasure hunt. Its just level10 that is a
backpain because the urchins moves too fast and the player's moves is very
limited. If only level10 of self destruct can be made slightly easier i will
be very greatful. To run around the grid in level10 trying to escape the
urchins until i found lots of health and ammo or the key to room0 is
impossible because regardless of how quickly i tap the arrow keys the urchins
is to fast for me and 40 moves is too little. My suggestion is that the grid s
hould have 4 restock rooms with randomly moves, health, ammo, or both placed at
random locations. I can even beat the urchin lord after level10, its only
level10 that is impossible. On easy difficulty its still possible to kill
urchins easily because if urchins enters room91 they receive a fatal shock so
if my health or ammo gets little i can just hide in room91.

[Audyssey] Some Python questions

2008-01-04 Thread Davy Kager
Hi,

A friend of mine is considering Python to write his games in, or apparently he
is absolutely sure that he is going to use Python. Now everybody who knows me
knows that I'll always keep on using C++ with no .NET influences and with many
bad coding practices. Nevertheless, I'd like to know some more about Python. I
mean, maybe I could incorporate in his cool project (and it really is cool). Of
course I could go and read some of these excellent O'Reilly beginner e-books,
but I think that experienced audiogame developers can provide the answers
quicker and better. So I hope somebody can help me!
1. Is it possible to compile Python scripts in such a way that you can't
decompile them and have the original source code back? I know that was an issue
with AutoIt, and still is an issue with many .NET programs.
2. Does Python have such things as structures or perhaps even classes? I really
like that part of C++, although I can't use it at all yet.
3. Is Python able to interface directly with Windows or even DirectSound, in
such a way that you don't need libraries like Pygame/SDL?

As said before, I'm really into C (and learning C++), so if these questions
seem very obvious or stupid... Well... Sorry! smile

Thanks!

Hi,
Agreed. Though, in this case the electric field or force fields if you
want to call them that were in the classic game. The platforms that
vanish and appeared were also in the game. Warp platforms were something
James added I just never pulled out of the game since they are quite
alright in the game.

2008-01-04 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Robin,
I know that Montezuma's Return isn't totally like the classic Monte, but
the spirit of the original still continues on in the USA Games version.
I have tried my best to keep anything that doesn't fit with the classic
out of the game. Lasers would just not really work for Monte as far as I
am concerned. Something like Megaman sounds better for lasers.

Robin Kipp wrote:

Couldn't there be lasers in some places of the game that fire in certain

 think?

Re: [Audyssey] Multiplatform Games

2008-01-04 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Cara,
Yeah, in regards to Vista it isn't the ideal for playing games. Vista's
User Account Control blocks or effects mosts audio games in some way,
and especially if you are not running as the admin with admin rights. So
turning it off is the only way to get nearly 100% assurance that your
games will run properly under Vista unless the apps have been corrected
to work with Vista's new security polacy.
To top that off Microsoft has cut out VB 6 DirectX support from Vista so
that is just one more thing that needs installed to maintain backward
compatibility with older games.

Re: [Audyssey] Multiplatform Games

2008-01-04 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi,
I wouldn't say that running XP or Vista under Linux using a vm software
like VM Ware is exactly dire, but you will notice some slow down and
proformence los by doing so on computers with less memory and older
processors. However, with Vista using it under VM is horrible even with
the Arrow service turned off and a 2.4 GHZ processor. Vista really needs
at least 3 GHZ to run good and 1 GB of ram absolute minimum if you are
going to vm it.

Draconis Entertainment wrote:
 Hi Cara and all,

Yes, you are correct as far as XP goes. Vista doesn't run nearly as
well as XP in a virtual environment. The performance hit is
noticeable though, but it isn't quite as dire as it may be under
Linux. The may issue is, I think, that Windows coupled with a Windows
screen reader is prohibitively expensive...and most Mac users would
far and away prefer not to have to run Windows at all if they can
 avoid it.

Re: [Audyssey] Raceway for Mac or Linux?

2008-01-04 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Cara,
I appreciate your concern. However, as for Claudio He later wrote a
responce that tried to clear up his earlier post by explaining that by
calling me James North he was trying to point out I took his place as
the developer of the game etc. Not necessarily that I was acting like
James. However, that aside the over all tone of the message still seamed
negative, but I am not going to dwell on it.
Part of the problem you discover when you program things is that the
general computer users don't have a clue about what you do, how you
work, and how software works in general. Actually, there is a majority
that don't even care how it works just as long as it works. So there is
this mysterious belief that programming is some sort of difficult magic
that is produced by computer wizards or something.
The truth is that all programming languages must abide by certain rules,
laws, and coding conventions just like the laws of Physics. An integer
based variable is the same in Algebra, Visual Basic, Java, C++, C#, etc.
So converting that code from one language to another is childs play once
you know how to declare it in both languages. Between languages like C#
and Java the code looks so similar to me that converting one to the
other is not difficult.

Cara Quinn wrote:
thomas, though I obviously had nothing at all to do with the
earlier post you're responding to, I'd like to extend my apologies to
you for it's tone. I know at least a little bit about the kind of
person you are and you don't deserve this sort of treatment in any
way, shape, or form. Furthermore, for myself, these are exactly the
sort of attitudes that dissuade me from doing more developing and
 putting more time into it...

I truly hope this is just a case of errors in translation?...

There are so many companies out there that don't give a damn about
the consumer at all, but somehow devs that are really putting the time
and effort into this to make something nice for people are getting
crap for it in plain english! :)

I'm sorry, the fact that someone three or so years ago spent what
amounts to a drop in the bucket, for a game they didn't get doesn't
have the right to stamp their lil foot and think they somehow have the
right to tell another human being who is doing them a favor in all
honesty, what they should or shouldn't be doing.

It's just a bloody game, and nobody's saying what happened was
right or just or anything else like that, but it sure doesn't give one
the right to be an absolute brat and treat someone with such
disrespect over something as ridiculous as a blasted game simply
because they didn't get their little way...

Sorry, but forgive me for not being sympathetic to that cause...

To those of you out there who feel this way, please grow up and learn
how to be human beings? -At least until you get your next fix of
 gameplay?...

Anyway, once again, Thomas, all the best to you and yours and I'm
ashamed of other blind people out there who act this way. It disgusts
 me...

Have a great day and talk with ya soon!...

 Cara :)

You can use py2exe to compile Python programs in to executables. I don't
know how easy it is to disassemble a Python executable, as I haven't
tried it myself, but I do know it is harder to do than it is with .Net
programs.

Quote
2. Does Python have such things as structures or perhaps even classes? I

End quote

Yes. Python uses a full object oriented programming mottle supporting
all advantages of object oriented design that C++ has, and actually
offers more object oriented advantages than C++. One area where this
shines is Python applications can be expanded outside the program by
using extended class scripts to script some part of your program
externally if you desire.

Quote
3. Is Python able to interface directly with Windows or even
DirectSound, in such
a way that you don't need libraries like Pygame/SDL?
End quote

Yes, you certainly can. It involves a bit of advanced Python programming
skill in writing a Python class wrapper to wrap the Windows library you
want to use, but it can certainly be done. Some of the more common
Windows libraries already have wrapper classes you can download and use
such as Pywin32 for Python 2.5.

Cheers.

Re: [Audyssey] Lasers in Monty?

2008-01-04 Thread chou.clement
I couldn't see someone throwing rocks at you that seems like something
for a game like Spartan: Total Warrior. That game is more or less a hack and
slash, military based with catapolts and stuff. Lasers? Um, no... not in
monty. I couldn't see that. If anybody intends to do something like Max
before it was pulled I could see lasers. But for Monty, definitely not.
Though I had to say... Onimusha, which is a game for the ps2 based in the
1560s, had lasers and guns, and that surprised me a bit. Then again,
onimusha is one of those fiction / historically mixed games. For all those
who are wondering, below is the plot.

Historical Portion:
In 1560, a warlord named Nobunaga Oda from Feudal Japan defeats one of his
last rivals in his quest to unify the country. But right after he defeats
the rival warlord, one of the surviving archers of Imagawa, his opponent,
shot an arrow through his throat and put his lights out.

Fiction:
But nobunaga rose from the dead with the help of the demons. As a warrior
named Jubei Yagyu, your goal is to defeat Nobunaga's demon hoards and
slaughter the warlord after he sends a pack of demons out to attack your
home village and massicur it, which is shown in the intro movie.

Now for the game itself. This game is one of the deepest games I've seen in
a long time for the ps2. With a story like that and the mechanics it is
really good. Pity is isn't totally playable. Basically, it's a hack and
slash, but there are rpg elements. There are puzzles, using and combining
items, upgradable weapons and armour, stuff like that. But what really gave
me such a jolt about this game was the fact that you could trade with other
people, and they would give you stuff back. Like, two characters in
particular you interact with are Mogoichi, a gunman, and ekei, a spearman.
Mogoichi likes history books, well, books in general, and exotic things,
like western things, which were very exotic back in those days. Ekei on the
other hand, likes his food, alcohol, and girls. Your typical guy right? =P.
So, if you give mogoichi a history book, for example, he will give you
bullets for your gun which you acquire later in the game. And if you give
ekei a love potion for example, he'll give you healing items and such. It's
a good action rpg, and I think something like it should be created for the
blind. And to be honest, the music in the last version of Monty for the main
menu sounds like the main theme from Onimusha. IT would fit the atmosphere
perfectly. lol.

[Audyssey] Remapping shift to alt in Monty

2008-01-04 Thread Robin Kipp
Hey again,
OK, I know I have suggested quite a few things for Monty already, but my
next suggestion isn't that difficult I think and maybe more of a bugfix.
Well, the problem is when I hit shift to run for a moment the key lock
window comes up and the game loses focus which is pretty annoying when
running away from a monster. Also, when I alt+tab I don't get back to
the game, but to one of the other programs running in the background.
Well, would it maybe be possible to change the run command to he alt key
so that won't be an issue anymore? Thanks and sorry for another
suggestion! :-)

Re: [Audyssey] Remapping shift to alt in Monty

2008-01-04 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Robin,
First, the problem you are having with the shift key has nothing to do
with Montezuma's Return, but is actually an issue with the way your copy
of Windows is configured. This is an easy problem to solve.
Under Windows XP go to control panel, accessibility options, and uncheck
use sticky keys. Then, tab to settings, press enter, and uncheck the use
shortcut setting. Go to ok, exit control panel, and that annoying
problem will sease to exist.
Second, I wouldn't move it to the alt key do to an unsolvable problem
with alt and C-Sharp .NET. Back in early testing I discovered when
pressing alt it defaults to opening the applications system menu
regardless if the application reasigns that keyboard command to some
other action. In this case half the time a person would press it to run,
and instead of running it would open their system menu. After allot of
research I was force to conclude that Managed DirectX has an issue
fully acquiring the alt key in .NET applications.

Re: [Audyssey] Lasers in Monty?

Hi Robin,
I appreciate all the suggestions, but in this case I'm really trying to
stick to the original monsters. The classic Montezuma's Return had
skulls, snakes, and spiders. My version adds one other monster, the
Guardian, which is a Phoenix which is only seen on the final level of
the game.

[Audyssey] Java based games was Raceway

2008-01-04 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi John and all,

Quote
1. Java talks to screen readers via the Java Access Bridge. The J A B does
not work with all screen readers, specifically Window-Eyes.
End quote

Yeah, I am pretty aware of the Java access bridge, and accessibility
limitations at this point. I am currently using Window Eyes 6.1, and
know all to well it doesn't support Java. However, I have been using
NVDA, a free screen reader which supports the access bridge, under
Windows for my Java development and testing. Alternatively when I do any
Java work under Linux I use Orca configured for the open source equal to
the Java access bridge for Windows.
It is too bad that GW Micro doesn't consider Java access a high
priority, but by and large Java is now widely supported accessibility
wize across many operating system platforms. Sun's Solaris operating
system comes with Orca, the Java runtime environment, and the Java
access bridge for Solaris pre-installed and configured by default. Mac
OS has followed in Sun's footsteps and has shipped Mac OS 10.5 Leopard
with the Java runtime and Java access bridge pre-installed and
configured for VoiceOver. Finally, if a Linux user wants to get their
hands and compile a few things Orca and Gnopernicus for Linux can be
setup to run Java applications with accessibility as well. Jaws is the
leading screen reader with Java accessibility support, but NVDA makes a
good alternative. All of this means that by and large Java accessibility
is becoming pretty standardised and available on any os we want to
target with our games.

Quote
4. The FreeTTS speech engine does allow you to change pitch. This is what I
do in our Inspector Cyndi in Newport mystery games in order to have women
and men, young and old, sound different.
End quote

I didn't know that, but I am heavily leaning twards using FreeTTS for
inclusion in my games since it is free and open source. What's more
since FreeTTS is open source if either of us wanted to new voices can be
added to the FreeTTS engine for our games. Though, adding voices is an
aspect of Java currently out of my field right now.

Quote
End quote

Well, I think you are on the right track for this. A company called
Cloud Garden offers a Talking Java SDK for windows at
http://www.cloudgarden.com/JSAPI/
which supports both Sapi4 and Sapi 5 tts engines for Windows. While the
SDK isn't free it might be something you and I want to look into for
Windows based games in Java.
Cloud Garden offers a 30 day evaluation version of the SDK, and that
should be enough time to write some simple apps with it and test out the
features and functionality of it for use in accessible games.

Cheers.

For myself, I've had some martial arts training in addition to self

One of my favs which is mainstream, was model mugging, which relies
on the attackers wearing completely padded suits so that the
participants can defend themselves without pulling punches or
 worrying
 about hurting the instructors...

Have you had any exp with self defense or martial arts?...

I can tell it hasn't shut down, and I have to guess at whether it's
 properly
installing updates, or if it froze up after my screen reader got
 killed and
me hit the power button when maybe it says bright and clear up there
 on that

Slowing my computer to a crawl, even before I start to install my own

 case of
system dings when I hit control immediately after entering message

as to start right off using arrows to read, those last two are jaw's
 fault
but they count as far as I'm concerned. And I haven't even started
 on about
200 dollars for a good OS, and then somewhere getting unnervingly
 close to
2000 dollars for the stupid screen reader if you want professional
 access
and remote desktop, ok granted window-eyes is less than half that
 but now
add 1 to 500 dollars for Microsoft office, unless you wanna go
 download open
office.org, sure that'll work, except now the screen reader won't
 read the
thin worth a hoot, or another 4 to 500 dollars for a good music mixing
software that can do decent recording and crap, yeah I could go on
 for a
looot longer about how if I found Linux to be a better solution I
 could
switch to it, and then be thrilled if some of those wonder game
 developers
started porting games to my lap so I wouldn't have to touch windows
 again!
Anyway, the point is, as far as it goes with me, if developers start
 making
games work with other operating systems, they'll get no complaint
 from me.
Also, windows users, I'm as much a windows user as any of you are,
 quite
likely anyway, but darned if I wouldn't switch to something else if it
proved to be a better option, and having games available on
 alternative
 operating systems is a starter.H

Subject: [Audyssey] Monkey Term revisited for vista please

 Hi again:

I missed one of the emails that talked about a work around with monkey
 term
and installing monkey lib in vista. Please can someone repost the
information? I tried to install gma games solitaire but that did not help.

 I
ran as a system administrator and that did not help either. Any other
 ideas
 outside of those? Thanks again.

Re: [Audyssey] Raceway for Mac or Linux?

2008-01-04 Thread Cara Quinn
Ah, very good then; Glad he cleared that up, and if I misspoke
based on an incorrect assumption, then I'm truly sorry. :)

AGreed on the ease of switching back and forth with languages.
The only difficulty I find in switching / adapting code from one form
to another is actually figuring out the original programmer's
organization! lol! -And I say this even if I was the original
programmer! lol!

Going back into code I wrote a year ago is like going back through
the strata of ages sometimes!...

Since I'm really not a coder by trade or love so to speak, and
don't do it every day, I find my styles tending to evolve and re-
evolve with a language in a given project. I know some of that is
natural, but when one does something every day, one can tend to
maintain a certain level of quality throughout a project.

so for myself, my organizational skills are great, however as I get
acquainted with a new project or new way of coding, I tend to need to
settle in again. smile

So while adapting code is easy, figuring out what the heck I was
thinking at the time may not be! lol!

anyway, excellent topic btw! -And, perhaps to take it a step
further and bring others into it, do you have any particular style of
starting a project from scratch for a given style of game?... I.E.
what parts of it do you like to code or create or think about first?...

for myself, I change depending on the project, as I'd sort of
alluded to above, so I'm wondering if you have a particular style that
you tend to go by?...

anyway, have a great weekend!...

Smiles,

Cara :)

 Hi Cara,
I appreciate your concern. However, as for Claudio He later wrote a
responce that tried to clear up his earlier post by explaining that by
calling me James North he was trying to point out I took his place as
the developer of the game etc. Not necessarily that I was acting like
James. However, that aside the over all tone of the message still
 seamed
negative, but I am not going to dwell on it.
Part of the problem you discover when you program things is that the
general computer users don't have a clue about what you do, how you
work, and how software works in general. Actually, there is a majority
that don't even care how it works just as long as it works. So there
 is
this mysterious belief that programming is some sort of difficult
 magic
that is produced by computer wizards or something.
The truth is that all programming languages must abide by certain
 rules,
laws, and coding conventions just like the laws of Physics. An integer
based variable is the same in Algebra, Visual Basic, Java, C++, C#,
 etc.
So converting that code from one language to another is childs play
 once
you know how to declare it in both languages. Between languages like
 C#
and Java the code looks so similar to me that converting one to the
 other is not difficult.

There are so many companies out there that don't give a damn about
the consumer at all, but somehow devs that are really putting the
 time
and effort into this to make something nice for people are getting
crap for it in plain english! :)

I'm sorry, the fact that someone three or so years ago spent what
amounts to a drop in the bucket, for a game they didn't get doesn't
have the right to stamp their lil foot and think they somehow have
 the
right to tell another human being who is doing them a favor in all
honesty, what they should or shouldn't be doing.

It's just a bloody game, and nobody's saying what happened was
right or just or anything else like that, but it sure doesn't give
 one
the right to be an absolute brat and treat someone with such
disrespect over something as ridiculous as a blasted game simply
because they didn't get their little way...

It
 disgusts
 me...

Have a great day and talk with ya soon!...

 Smiles,

 Cara :)

 Hello Geremy,
All of my games found at
 http://www.usagames.us
are Windows Vista compatible. In fact, my newest title Montezuma's
Return is being developed on a laptop running Windows Vista with
 all the
patches and upgrades for Vista installed.
The only thing you need to update to run my games on Vista is DirectX
which is on my system requirements page
 http://www.usagames.us/requirements.php
 which is DirectX August 2007.

 Hi Lisa,
Yes, it most certainly is.
