Re: [Audyssey] lower than bsc ok for games?

2008-02-17 Thread Dark
Hi ari.

there seems to be a lot of routes through these things. A friend of mine did
a degree in philosophy (how we met), but then through learning programming
languages himself, went on to do an msc in computer science, and now
developes those information business systems you mentioned.

For fun, he's also played around with writing games, and even knocked
up a gamebook script in perl for me at one point, but that's not how he pays
the bills.

there is always time to learn things, even physics.

Beware the Grue!

Re: [Audyssey] quick question

2008-02-17 Thread Dark
to be honest the computer is an idiot, sinse he buys up everything when he
doesn't have the cash.

Generally when I play, I own a few properties, which are all built up with
hotels etc, and the computer owns three quarters of the board, but can't
collect rent on them because they're all morgaged to the bank, and the game
just turns into waiting for the computer to slip up on my properties enough
times, which can be a really long process (I've never actually finished
a game this way).

When we play monopoly, when a property is morgaged, it then goes back to a
free square that anyone can buy, thus the successfull player really does get
to own more of the board, and the game is over more quickly.

I very much would like to see that rule available as an option in the game
in future, sinse imho it would imrpvoe things a lot, - especially with
the computer's crazy habbit of buying everything in site and bankrupting
himself.

beware the Grue!

Dark.

Hi Ari,

I don't know if you consider my games very advanced or what, but I never took
any higher math than algebra in high school. Actually I never even graduated
high school. But I sure do have fun programming games in Visual Basic. Now
some of my games like Mach 1, Pong, Homer on a Harley etc might benefit from
real math formulas rather than just stuff that I made up to make it all work,
but still they do work. grin Game programming is I think allot different
than business programming and I am not sure how much of the programming from
business type stuff helps with game programming, but the desire to make games
sure does help I think. grin

2008-02-17 Thread Jim Kitchen
Hi Nicol,

One reason that I do not charge for my games is because if I were to earn any
money it would mess with my government housing rent, my government medical
health insurance spend down amount, my government food stamps and possibly even
my government disability income check. But just because I do not charge for my
games doesn't mean that others shouldn't want some compensation for all of
their hard work. I mean even just all of the time and effort that it takes to
learn computer programming before you can even start to write your first game.
Not to mention all of the cost for a programming language, web site costs, time
and effort to find or buy sounds etc etc. Personally I very much enjoy
creating and sharing my games. I think more so as a hobby rather than as a
business, but again that doesn't mean that others shouldn't want to be
compensated.

Hi Dark,
It's not about time, it's about the problems here, because the University
doesn't have a gap course which can help him if he never did Physics at
school, and the problem is that, unfortunately here there isn't a place
which can do such advanced stuff in braille if he wants to do the sort of
bridging course because they don't know how to get the physics stuff into
braille in the first place. I don't know, maybe he should just do the
Information Systems BCOM first and then just hope he'll know enough to do
some programming for games or pick it up later I suppose.

Hi Kevin,
There are wap games, you play by clicking on links of the wap site. Go to
wap.kalador.com and then you click on Home, then on, I think Games. There
are also some at wap.worddial.com as well.
I think Code Factory also makes a few phone games for blind people, but I

Actually Jim, I think what you've just said is probably some of the most
encouraging stuff for someone like him, because I think many people, even
myself had this notion that you need to be this absolute BSC-type, flying

Hi Liam,
I Still want Sphere, I wish you were still wanting to do that. I'd
definitely buy a well-made table-tennis or Pong game, what I mean is, a Pong
game with tournaments, strangely-behaving tables, maybe different types of
shots and bounces, fun features, crowds, a Brit umpire like what they have
at Wimbledon tennis, and also multi-player, that would have really been fun!
Please!! think of doing Sphere again. Shots could have counter-shots,
walls on the sides of tables where the ball would bounce off, bril.

Hi Liam,
Dude, that sample game sounds awesome. I love the sound effects. Don't
know what it is about but the game action reminds me of a few games I

well.

Re: [Audyssey] lower than bsc ok for games?

2008-02-17 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Ari,
No, a person does not need a college degree in computer science to learn
to program games. You can usually learn that stuff on the internet if
you know where to get the materials, and if you can find a language that
you can understand. I know Jim Kitchen uses Visual Basic 6, because for
him it is easy enough to use and learn. For me I learned C++ in college
so I've never had a problem adapting what I know in C++ to languages
like Java, C-Sharp, etc that are based on a C++ style mottle.
As I mentioned in previous emails before a service such as
safari.oreilly.com
has just about everything a new developer could want. If you want to do
C++ it is there, if you want to learn C--Sharp it is there, if you want
to know Java it is there, if you want to learn to program a A.I. it is
there, etc.
Truth be told I have learned more outside of college than in college. Oh
sure, I learned to write simple calculators in C++, how to make a simple
ATM type program, build a custom database in SQL, etc but that didn't
give me the skills I have today with Montezuma's Return, STFC, and now
Mysteries of the Aztecs.
Everything I know about Visual Basic .NET, C# .NET, Java 6, etc I
learned outside college. I simply paid for the b ooks on Safari, read
them, did some sample programs, and got enough understanding in them to
begin applying it to my projects. No degree was handed to me for those
languages, but I learned just the same.

ari wrote:
Actually Jim, I think what you've just said is probably some of the most
encouraging stuff for someone like him, because I think many people, even
myself had this notion that you need to be this absolute BSC-type, flying
through a whole degree in college type of person. I'll talk to him about
this, because I think that we always picture people like Thomas and you as
like having these major degrees in computer science, and, really, this will
probably not just be thrilling for him, but even for me as well!

 Hello gamers,
I would first like to thank everyone for casting their votes yesterday.
Here is the results of the Mysteries Of The Aztecs poll we ran
yesterday. The question was should Mysteries Of The Aztecs remain a
side-scroller or be converted to a first person style game. Out of 52
total votes cast 34 of you said it should remain a side-scroller and 18
said it should be turned into a fps. The side-scroller style carried 65%
of the vote leaving 35% of the voters picking FPS.

 Cheers.

Re: [Audyssey] MOTA Poll Update.

2008-02-17 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Andy,
FPS stands for First Person Shooter. That includes games like Monkey
Business, Sarah, and Shades Of Doom.
As for Angela's next quest I don't want to give too much away until the
game is closer to a release. The short story is Angela travels the world
looking for some lost artifacts from a lost civilization that are pretty
powerful in the wrong hands.

Re: [Audyssey] STFC multiplayer?

2008-02-17 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi,
Well, assuming I ever get back to STFC 2.0 I actually am moving in an
essentially new direction with the game. A lot of people complained
about the lack of upgrades, lack of variety of classes of ships, etc I
want to make STFC 2.x a real time strategy game. If things go to plan,
though copyrights are a serious issue right now, i'd like to make the
game so you can select a class build it, and upgrade from one class to
another.
For example, you might be able to start out with the Enterprise A which
was a Constitution-Class, upgrade to the Ambassidor-Class, upgrade to
the Galaxy-Class, and eventually the Sovereign-Classs.
Though, do to copyright issues over Montezuma's Return I think Final
Conflict 2.0 might be more generic rather than being Star Trek tttheme
based.

[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
Who wouldn't mind seeing this? This isn't something I expect tom to work on
because he's busy with so much other stuff for us. But I hope it can happen
eventually. Who wouldn't mind seeing star trek final conflict multiplayer?
You could have, up to say, five players, each controlling one of the five
fleets. Well, six, if you count borg. You could have one player do a turn,
and then have all the turns announced as they're executed. I think it would
make it really fun... anyone agree or disagree? Again, I still hope this can
happen, I'm just not expecting it. lol.

Hey,
Well I'm 12 and don't know much about algebra, and I seem to be doing
okay with SDM? In fact SDM doesn't use much algebra, lots of checks

it'd be to hard... you also sonetimes need to use special libraries
that are hard to use or whatever when using consoles like ps2 and what
not...

That is absolutely correct. The business programming mottle is pretty
different from the game programming mottle. Often times they use
different libraries, languages, or just completely different programming
 techniques to acomplish something.
For example, if you wanted to build an Enterprise database for a
customer service help desk type application you might create an MS SQL
database in SQL. Then, you would use C# .NET or VB.NET to create a
graphical user interface complete with edit fields, buttons, and scroll
bars to search, edit, and manage your help desk application based on
 .NET libraries for databases.
Now, if you wanted to create a .NET based game for your XBox 360 and use
C# .NET the coding techniques are completely different from your typical
MS SQL graphical front end. For one thing if targeting the XBox you
would require the XNA framework to be installed, and rather than setting
up a form to draw tools, buttons, etc on you would create an empty
window to pipe all your killer game graphics to. For your SQL database
front end you can use the Windows standard event mottle to poll for
keyboard and mouse events, but for games you need something like XInput
for polling the keyboard, mouse, and joysticks. In your SQL front end
you can play back special sound effects using the standard Windows com
audio libraries, but in XBox games you need XAudio. These are just a few
of the things that is totally different about games vs business
 applications.

to be honest the computer is an idiot, sinse he buys up everything when he
 doesn't have the cash.

Generally when I play, I own a few properties, which are all built up with
hotels etc, and the computer owns three quarters of the board, but can't
collect rent on them because they're all morgaged to the bank, and the
 game
just turns into waiting for the computer to slip up on my properties
 enough
times, which can be a really long process (I've never actually
 finished
 a game this way).

When we play monopoly, when a property is morgaged, it then goes back to a
free square that anyone can buy, thus the successfull player really does
 get
to own more of the board, and the game is over more quickly.

I very much would like to see that rule available as an option in the game
in future, sinse imho it would imrpvoe things a lot, - especially with
the computer's crazy habbit of buying everything in site and bankrupting
 himself.

 beware the Grue!

[Audyssey] infocom games

2008-02-17 Thread Allen
I thought the big problem with playing Infocom games was finding accessible
versions of the print material that you had to have to be able to continue
further at a certain point in the game. For example, In Station Fall you had
to be able to read the coordinate chart to set course to the space station.
Without that you could not play the game.

Is there a repository of blind-accessible documents for Infocom games?

 Hi,
Well, assuming I ever get back to STFC 2.0 I actually am moving in an
essentially new direction with the game.

This isn't something I expect tom to work

happen eventually. Who wouldn't mind seeing star trek final conflict
multiplayer? You could have, up to say, five players, each controlling
one of the five fleets. Well, six, if you count borg. You could have one
player do a turn, and then have all the turns announced as they're
executed. I think it would make it really fun... anyone agree or
disagree? Again, I still hope this can happen, I'm just not expecting it.
 lol.

[Audyssey] Savage Gambit

2008-02-17 Thread ari
Hi all,
Is there anywhere from where I can download The Savage Gambit and the
trainer thing? The site where it's on seems closed down. You know, thinking
about boxing games, I don't know if it's changed nowdays because I haven't
tried the latest consols yet, but most of these games are really not like
real fights! Most boxing fights are about strategy and go to points with few
knock-downs or knock-outs, and to concentrate for three minutes at a time,
for twelve rounds must probably be exhausting. The only boxing game I did
see nearly like this was unfortunately not too accessible, on the Sega
Megadrive called Foreman For Real.

 Hello Lisa.

there's no way I know to convert the infocom games, but they are directly
playable in windows via the win frotz interpretter for interactive
 fiction,
and run absolutely fine under windows.

You can find win frotz at
 http://www.microheaven.com/IFGuide/IFGuide.pl?step=6c=0

There are various places to get win frotz, even a version with in
 built
ms sapi supported speach so no screen reader required.

You can find the self-voicing version of win frotz on
 http://www.whitestick.co.uk/text.html

 hth.

 Beware the grue!

Hi Liam,
Dude, that sample game sounds awesome. I love the sound effects. Don't
know what it is about but the game action reminds me of a few games I
played ages ago. The pipe attack reminds me of the bats and pipes you
could pick up in Double Dragon and beat the holy crap out of the

Re: [Audyssey] super secret audio from LWorks

2008-02-17 Thread shaun everiss
That game really sounds good.
Fists and pipes sounded like fists and pipes.
The machine gun sounded chunky and the launcher.
Well you would expect to hear the thing launch and the projectile role to the
target then blow.
In audioquake this does not happen.
The grenades bounce a little and you hear them clunk but they do not role.
Unless you use the modified ww2 soundmod that is.
At 06:13 a.m. 18/02/2008, you wrote:

it seems the side scrollers are out in force today, and I agree with
tom, pipes and fisticuffs much like double dragon, Final fight or streets

rage, but the background ambience had more a sneaking into a guarded base
feel to me, - h, I am intreagued, in fact my intreaguedness has
quite overwhelmed my desire to find out what that blasted christal did to

goodluck with further developement, I'm looking forward to seeing what the

 Hi Liam,
Dude, that sample game sounds awesome. I love the sound effects. Don't
know what it is about but the game action reminds me of a few games I
played ages ago. The pipe attack reminds me of the bats and pipes you
could pick up in Double Dragon and beat the holy crap out of the
enemies. The Pistils, sniper rifles, machine guns, are pretty awsome
 as
 well.

 Hello Lisa.

there's no way I know to convert the infocom games, but they are directly
playable in windows via the win frotz interpretter for interactive
 fiction,
and run absolutely fine under windows.

You can find win frotz at
 http://www.microheaven.com/IFGuide/IFGuide.pl?step=6c=0

There are various places to get win frotz, even a version with in
 built
ms sapi supported speach so no screen reader required.

You can find the self-voicing version of win frotz on
 http://www.whitestick.co.uk/text.html

[Audyssey] Massive problems with Acefire!!!

2008-02-17 Thread Sarah Haake
Hi list and especially Damien,

I just downloaded and installed Acefire, but I can't play it at all.
First, when I submit my name and gender in the dialog box it says my gender
is male, altough I chose female.
And now the real problems start:
After clicking on ok in the dialogbox the music starts, I hear a ticking
sound and nothing happens. Nothing at all! I can't even shut down the
program, I am forced to restart my whole computer. I tryed this twice, and
now I deinstalled the whole thing because it is quite unnerving to restart
the computer every 5 minutes.
Besides, I think the game starts twice when I click once on the desktop
icon, because I get a second dialog box where I have to submit my name etc.
Again, I can't shut down the whole thing, not even with the program manager.

What is going on there and is there a solution for this?

Thanks and regards
Sarah

You planning to implement any bladed weapons? I'm not expecting throwing
stars or any samurai or ninja crap, but knives, crowbars or even on
 occasion
projectile weapons that aren't firearms like daggers? Not that throwing
stars would be a bad idea... that would be interesting.

2008-02-17 Thread Karl
Hi,
First, with the gender thing, there is a patch on the site that fixes
this. The music playing is the loading of the game files. Sometimes
this can take a while, so just wait, and it will switch to an x-sight
logo in a few minutes. While the files are loading, it seems best if
you don't do to much.

 That game really sounds good.
Fists and pipes sounded like fists and pipes.
The machine gun sounded chunky and the launcher.
Well you would expect to hear the thing launch and the projectile role to
 the target then blow.
In audioquake this does not happen.
The grenades bounce a little and you hear them clunk but they do not role.
Unless you use the modified ww2 soundmod that is.

Re: [Audyssey] lower than bsc ok for games?

2008-02-17 Thread josh
hi,
ok so if you did not get a degree in programming and you know so much, why
is it that employers require you to show a degree? or have one? What's so
special about that paper if you can just as easily learn stuff on your own?
Heck you could teach blind game programming at a university for blind people
if you wanted to couldn't you?

 Hi Ari,
No, a person does not need a college degree in computer science to learn
to program games.

I'll talk to him about
this, because I think that we always picture people like Thomas and you
 as
like having these major degrees in computer science, and, really, this
 will
probably not just be thrilling for him, but even for me as well!

 Hi Jim,

 Quote
Game programming is I think allot different than business programming
 and I am not
sure how much of the programming from business type stuff helps with
 game programming,
but the desire to make games sure does help I think.
 End quote

Re: [Audyssey] STFC multiplayer?

2008-02-17 Thread josh
hey thomas,
ok how about this for the star trek game. just drop the star trek off of the
title. just call it final conflict. and then do like you're gunna do with
tomb-hunter, just give us krappy sounds in the original game, and then add a
sound pack. see then you can kind of sneak around the copyrights but still
give us a cool game to play.

 Hi,
Well, assuming I ever get back to STFC 2.0 I actually am moving in an
essentially new direction with the game.
Conflict 2.0 might be more generic rather than being Star Trek tttheme
 based.

multiplayer? You could have, up to say, five players, each controlling
one of the five fleets. Well, six, if you count borg. You could have one
player do a turn, and then have all the turns announced as they're
executed. I think it would make it really fun... anyone agree or
disagree? Again, I still hope this can happen, I'm just not expecting it.
 lol.

a few idiots get the dev all angry, the game dev starts lashing out

Hello everyone,
We are sending this email out to inform everyone that this morning a
hacker broke into our web host's root account and deleted all of the
files on the server, and our web host is unable to restore from server
backups do to this attack. As a result USA Games currently has lost all
mailing lists, email accounts, the web site, some php scripts, our newly
setup wiki service for developers, etc. We have not had a chance to
fully assess the damage yet, but this hacking break in is very bad. I
might have the basic site up and running in a week, but some of it could
take closer to two weeks to get setup again.
UI will email the list more once my mail server is back up and running
again. Right now I am sending this email out via third-party smtp server
so I can send messages, but not receive them.

Thanks.

Um. Ok, then. Should I put azteks setup on sendspace?

Lol call me weird but I back up everything. Now only if I backed up the php on
the site then you wouldn't have to restore anything. Don't think that'd be
possible but.

Anyway if its ok i'll put it all back up, the azteks setup I mean, through

I'll hold my tongue on this issue, but I have my own thoughts on why this
happened.

you mean you've found out who did it and where they live? wow. that
was quick detective work. Was it a list member?

Re: [Audyssey] super secret audio from LWorks

2008-02-17 Thread Liam Erven
well. it really wasn't supposed to sound realistic. I'll probably be
fixing that in the future. and you guys will like the bouncing grenades
much more now. they're easier to track as they move.

 That game really sounds good.
Fists and pipes sounded like fists and pipes.
The machine gun sounded chunky and the launcher.
Well you would expect to hear the thing launch and the projectile role to
 the target then blow.
In audioquake this does not happen.
The grenades bounce a little and you hear them clunk but they do not
 role.
Unless you use the modified ww2 soundmod that is.

Hi Liam,
Dude, that sample game sounds awesome. I love the sound effects. Don't
know what it is about but the game action reminds me of a few games I
played ages ago. The pipe attack reminds me of the bats and pipes you
could pick up in Double Dragon and beat the holy crap out of the
enemies. The Pistils, sniper rifles, machine guns, are pretty awsome as
well.

 Hey Hey!

I'm in a great mood. I just happened to get bored and decide it was
high time to update everyone with what was happening in the not so
 sunny
land of LWorks. How many game programmers will send random messages
like this at 1 in the morning to say they have something for you to
listen to? And to make it even better, I'm not going to say what this
audio is of. All I'll tell you is, it's part of a new engine I'm
working on. No specifics about the game have been released, but you
 can
always guess if you want. and no. it's not super Liam 2. grins.
 you can hear it at

I have been programming all night, and I'm extremely excited.

You guys didn't read his message properly I see. Thomas didn't say his
computer was hacked. He said the root of his hosting company he uses was
hacked into. So, this means that Thomas using Vista has nothing to do
with it. You should read the message more carefully. smile.

 Hi,
What Apache server were you running? Up to date I hope! Also, I'm kind of
sick of these hackings... first rsg, what do these people look at every
vulnerability possible! How this morning? I was on it around noon I
believe.. At least just the data was gone, and they didn't replace
index.phpwith something else! I feel bad for you, if you need
 anything, and if theres
any kind of logging of visitors and logins which I'll get around to
eventually to code, you really should take some kind of action, stuff like
 this gets out of control..
