Re: [Audyssey] mvc 3 arcade mode playthrough

2011-02-24 Thread Scott Chesworth
Yup I'd already seen this, it's pretty cool. There's a whole series of
these clips focusing on different characters. Search Youtube for
Mortal Kombat 9 gameplay to find them. Lu Kang's one is cool, Noob
Saibot's one has an awesome combo in it toward the end, but there are
a few of them that worry me a little, like this one for Scorpion:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g62X9pLGiKQ
Something about the speed of that, or lack of it, irks me. It feels
lumpy. Plus, the music is the weirdest thing I've heard in mk yet! I'm
hoping that it's a case of each character plays dramatically
differently though, because Scorpion seems this slow in everything
I've seen, and maybe the soundtrack is a grower, who knows.

This interview is awesome too, only a few key bits of game play are
audable, but Ed covers quite a lot that's worth hearing about with the
dialogue:

Hmmm, agreed about MK's gameplay not being as deep nowadays. It's
gradually been happening since MK4 onward, I find each title to be
that little bit more watered down. It might only be me clinging to the
characters I know, but I keep finding myself saying little prayers
that MK9 can combine the insanely good sound design of the last few
titles with a sharp increase in the depth of control available for
each character. I want to be able to feel like there's more work to do
to master a character than just learning specials and fatalities. I
want to be a totally horrible MK player again because I'm so out of
practice, rather than being able to plough my way through with a moves
list and some half-hearted button mashing. From everything I've seen
online so far, MK9 is holding its own sound-wise, so now we've just
got to hope they haven't been lazy about the actual number crunching
and mechanics of reverting to 2d movement. If 2d movement turns out to
be just a gimick, the series is going to feel s tired IMO.

there are going to be a few retro MK and Tekken titles on hand for
retribution purposes lol.

Re: [Audyssey] RSW and sorting out world connections

2011-02-24 Thread Frost
On Wed, Feb 23, 2011 at 06:35:08PM -0800, David Rose wrote:
Have any of you come up with any brilliant tools for organizing this
information?

[My Reply:]
Hi David,

About the only way I can see to do it is to generate a text file
with each sector, followed by it's connecting sectors, the way it was in
Tradewars 2000, back in the pre-internet, Bulletin Board System days.
Since the map had 1000 sectors, the map was 1000 lines long, but I still
had to create the map by hand, calculating routes from point A to B, to
keep from using up my movement turns.

I was spending the initial phazes of the game, mapping, finding
a cluster of 3 or more sectors with only one way in that was defensible,
creating planets in them, and mapping space stations routes which had
the best trade potentials. It took a bit of work, even while I was
sighted, but I'd think a list of sectors and their connections is the
only way to go, and another list of trade sectors and what's being sold
in them. That way you can see so-and-so is selling wheat and buying
farm machinery, and whats-his-face is selling farm machinery and buying
wheat, and they're only a few sectors apart. Voila, you've found a
trade route.

I used to love finding little clusters with a tunnel of sectors
leading into them. Plant all your defenses in the tunnel to make a
multi-staged defense against the bad guys, and protect your planets and
stations, and create your own trade routes the way you like. Then go
find the guys doing the same, stomp their guts out, take over their
stuff and mine the crap out of their sector, so when they came back to
the game, they'd be really ticked at you. .evil grin.

Anyway, if Retro Space Wars is anything like Tradewars 2000, I
think I'm gonna enjoy kicking your butts. .grins.

Nifty! Revenge is sweet. Just for an added twist, how about having the
chicken respawn after one minute and keep track of the number of chicken
kills players achieve. It would certainly add value to the clocks as players
tried to extend game time to kill more chickens.

2011-02-24 Thread Clement Chou
I will say this. While I'm excited about the game, the music has
always bugged me in the more recent games. Not that it's bad. I just
find it to be the same repetetive stuff... and more often than not,
there is no diversity in the music. It's all just the same one or two
chords with different procussion thrown in. It's pretty cool for the
first month of playing... but it gets real old after a while. What
this game needs is a soul calibur kind of sound track. I wouldn't go
as far to say like SF, since I don't think the rock / techno /
whatever else they have wouldn't fit the atmosphere in the game. But
a bit more variation in the music wouldn't hurt, instead of the same
procussive drums and whatnot I'm used to.

Okay... someone tell me if that was a fair opinion? lol. I'm not
trying to bash the game, having already said I'm excited for it, just
want to know what other people think.

Put it this way. Personally, I wouldn't say that was entirely fair. But you
can still just turn down the music and put some of your own in the back... I
do that when I'm borred... lol. But I'm not getting what you mean...

Re: [Audyssey] mvc 3 arcade mode playthrough

2011-02-24 Thread Clement Chou
I'm not saying the music is bad. I like it, I just like to hear some
variation in the music... and every stage seems to consist almost
exclusively of procussion or a few plunked out notes here and there.
And, compared to other games, MK's music is just a bit generic for my
tastes. Compare these four songs, for example.

MK:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3394499/Mortal%20Kombat%20Deception%20-%20Arcade%20-%2007%20-%20Falling%20Cliffs.mp3

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3394499/Mortal%20Kombat%20Deception%20-%20Arcade%20-%2011%20-%20Lower%20Mines.mp3

Soul Calibur:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3394499/SC2%20OST%20-%201-07%20-%20Brave%20Sword%2C%20Braver%20Soul.mp3

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3394499/SC2%20OST%20-%201-11%20-%20Eternal%20Struggle.mp3

The MK tracks aren't bad... and I liked them. But soul calibur...
another kettle of fish entirely. The MK music was turned down pretty
low, just enough to be able to hear it and contribute to the
atmosphere. Soul calibur had both sound and bgm turned all the way
up. I don't know... just personal opinion, I guess.

Hi guys. Recently I bought a Mac, and I would like to try playing Audio Quake,
seeing as I have been playing it for a while on the windows side. I was
wondering if anyone knew how to install it on Mac?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Liam and all.

Besides what has been said about this so far which I've found helpful by the
way, the only thing I would add is that after you have picked the team you
want once, the game seems to remember that setting the next time you come in
there so all you have to do is hit your x button to pick each one. I don't
know if it remembers your assist selections yet.

Hope this helps.

Has anyone figured out how to get around this screen? It's kind of awkward,
and after selecting a character, my cursor seems to just want to randomly
drop me somewhere. I'm glad you at least get audible confirmation on who
you've selected.

The one that always amuses me is sod for shades of doom, sinse in england
(particularly in the midlands), sod is a mild swearword and something my
mum says if she spills her coffee ;d.

That's personally why I always use shades instead if I want to talk about
the game more briefly.

Mota is also amusing because with the way I have orphius set and the way I
naturally speak it comes out exactly like motor, so if I didn't know
better I might think tom's working on raceway already ;D.

Hi Michael,

If you have a problem with someone using an abreviation, nickname, etc
for something you should try and be more constructive about it.
Instead of throwing a fit, as you did below, it is much more
reasonable to say, I don't know what RSW is, and have someone explain
it to you.

After all, those of us who have been on the list quite a while have
gotten use to nicknames, abreviations, for lots of games like SOD for
Shades of Doom, GTC for Tank Commander, LW for Lone Wolf, MOTA for
Mysteries of the Ancients, etc. So if you need clarification all you
have to do is ask nicely, and someone will tell you what you want to
know. What is not exceptable is sending a post like the one below.
Consider this your first official warning.

On 2/23/11, Frost znvyyv...@gmail.com wrote:

Well, I just looked up RSW on Google, and got a stock report and
something about SouthWest Florida International airport, and I'm
figuring this has absolutely NOTHING to do with the game previously
mentioned, whatever the hell it is. Thank you for wasting my bandwidth.
