I think for me personally I'll never forget the day Owen Hart died. I was watching it live when he fell 78 feet from the roof to the ring below because the harness and buckles weren't tight enough on his flying entrance for the intercontinental match. He came down pretty hard, and I was sitting in my dad's living room watching it when it happened. Well, listening more like as my vision was pretty much gone then, but still it was pretty shocking sitting there listening to this event on pay per view as it unfolded. Then, before the program was over they announced that Owen Hart was pronounced dead on arival at the hospital. He was only 34 years old when he died. That's pretty young yet. Another tragic death in my opinion was the death of Hawk. Throughout the 80's and 90's I guess he had a serious drug habbit, messed around with a lot of women, etc and was really heading for an early death when he finally cleaned his life up. He went through rehab, got married, started going to church, and the next thing you know he just passed away in his sleep. I think it is really sad that the guy lived such a messed up life, only to clean up his act, and then died just when he was really getting his act together. Doesn't seem quite fair does it? [Audyssey] my two cents: (was Re: Dumbing down games (was RE: anyone got anny suggestionsfor the next versionofbattlezone?))
Hi, Have you tried my sound pack for Audio Quake? I think you'll find it makes a lot more sense. For example, you hear a door slamming instead of a low hum for--well--a door. The wall sounds and slopes were changed too. I actually modified the Jedi mod for Audio Quake, that gives a coordinate system and allows you to adjust, on the fly, the scanning rate so you can run and still hear what you're flying past. I even made a hunter rocket. It doesn't do much damage at all, but you can shoot it and follow it as it hunts down that next monster. I'm sure some would say it makes things way too easy, but in the episodes you really need all the help you can get. I'll post it on my site, along with the sound pack for SoundRTS as soon as I get hold of it--it's on my hard drive which currently isn't plugged in. The real bummer is that I just paid fifty bucks for a web host. I'm stuck with the host for a year. He was very honest about what his company offered, and since I value honesty highly I signed up. What I didn't realize is how much extra he was charging for extra storage space, and since I only get 25 megs it's no good as a storage spot, which means I'm linking everything to good-old flopbox for now. Louis Bryant is being kind enough to give me server space for Phrase Madness, which is nearly complete, including the comments uploader, so once I've sold some games I'm going to get a better web host. Till then you'll all have to settle for Dropbox if you want sound packs. Hi all. I've been following this very stimulating discussion. I'm also a bit of a mainstream gamer as most of you know, I started out on the old Atari games back when home computers were first coming out and audio games had not even been thought of yet. For that reason I too am used to doing without audio cues to a large extent and I mainly agree with the idea that figuring a game out is more than half the fun. Having said that though, those of us who are into these kinds of games and who enjoy figuring things out do need to remember that not everyone is at this level and we don't want to discourage new people from getting into gaming, the gods know there are few enough of us as it is whether you are talking about mainstream or audio games. Just as a for instance. I tried to get into audio quake a few years back, I even went so far as to get hold of an old copy of the full game. I tried learning how to make it work but I found it pretty impossible. The sound cues just did not make any sense at all and I eventually got frustrated and gave up. So I can see where some of these new gamers are maybe coming from. From a programming standpoint I would not think it should be too hard to satisfy both sides here, if a cue is subtle such as a slightly different sounding footstep such as you encounter in shades of doom when you are close to a wall this should not be intolerable to the advanced gamer who doesn't want them. For things like targetting sounds I think these should be optional so the beginner can use them but the advanced player can dispense with them if he wishes. Well that's my two cents' worth on this for now. Game on. Re: [Audyssey] Couple more things about MOTA.
Hi Ryan, As for the first bug thanks for reporting it. Only one person has reported that bug, and I was hoping someone would confirm this bug. As I now have confirmation this is an actual bug I'll be looking into it further for the MOTA upgrade I'm working on now. As for the second issue I've not had any issues killing enemies. Although, I can think of two reasons why you might shoot and miss. One is every weapon has a min and max distance. I.E. if you are too close or too far away you will fire the weapon but not hit anything at all. This isn't your ordinary game were simply shooting will hit something. You litterally have to be standing back away from your target to swing a sword, fire a gun, etc. This is true to real life, and why it works that way. Re: [Audyssey] Dumbing down games (was RE: anyone got anny suggestions for the next versionofbattlezone?)
Hello Thomas. You make your point very very well and by the way I think you are doing a great job integrating the audio indicators such as the crumbling ledge sounds into the ambiance of Mota. This is ideally the kind of thing you want a sound that tells the player something if they need it but doesn't get in the way for advanced players. How interesting you know someone who is blind and hearing impaired, my wife is legally blind and also deaf in her left ear so I know precisely what you are talking about when you say that playing these games is a challenge for your friend because it is for her as well. She has found that if she turns her head a certain way she can kind of judge where things are in the stereo field, for instance she was able to get pretty far in grizzly gulch that way. However when playing something like Troopanum II she definitely has to have the targetting sound. As you say, we advanced gamers need to give both developers and new gamers a break, this is not unique to the blind gaming community, we're just really seeing it here a lot more and people are maybe taking it a bit more personally because we are such a small group. Anyhow, thanks for the reply and the interesting thoughts. Game on. Tom -Original Message- From: gamers-boun...@audyssey.org [mailto:gamers-boun...@audyssey.org] On Behalf Of Thomas Ward Sent: Friday, April 08, 2011 3:36 PM To: Gamers Discussion list Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Dumbing down games (was RE: anyone got anny suggestions for the next versionofbattlezone?) Hi Tom, Interesting points you raised. As a gamer and software developer I have to say I see both sides of the argument too. As you pointed out just because someone like you or I is able to do without feature x doesn't necessarily mean everybody can do without it. For example, let's take targeting in Shades of Doom. Most of the time I don't need the night scope beeping away in my ear to line up and shoot a target. In fact, I personally find it a bit distracting so usually turn it off. However, that doesn't mean that such a feature should not exist, because I happen to know people who are physically unable to play without it. I happen to have a very long time friend who is totally blind from birth, but she also has problems whith her hearing as well. She has a difficult time playing anything as complex as Shades of Doom because she can't hear things very well on her left side. As a result since targeting requires centering a monster in her headphones she's not able to do that because she can't hear very well out of her left ear. She can, however, target using the night scope because it will increase in pitch as she lines the target up. So an accessibility feature like that is not just for someone who is blind, but may have some hearing impairment too. Same goes for this argument over weather or not there needs to be a step sound for traps. Now, I've tried my best to work it into the background ambience so it isn't exactly intrusive and sounds like it truly belongs there. Again, personally, I probably don't need it. I can usually judge by sound alone when or when not to jump. However, coming back to my friend if she is walking left in MOTA she doesn't have much functional hearing out of her left ear so judging when or when not to jump a fire pit, lava pit, chasm, by sound alone is just not possible for her. However, since adding the crumbling ledges she knows she should try and jump because it plays out of both speakers, and is an absolute indicator of a trap. So once again this feature just doesn't help a blind player, but someone who may have other disabilities such as being hard of hearing as well. The point I'm getting at is when it comes to accessibility I don't think there is any single one-size fits all solution. There are your advanced gamers who don't need targeting sounds, step sounds for drop offs, or any number of things. For others they simply are unable to play the game without it. Either because they don't have the experience you have, or they are physically unable to do that for one reason or another. We really should not come down too harshly on the developers who are trying to provide accessibility in the only way they know how. I myself am having a serious challenge trying to make Mysteries of the Ancients both accessible, but not dumb it down in the process. It is not an easy balance to make given the fact that that no two gamers are alike. Cheers! On 4/8/11, Tom Randall kf6...@comcast.net wrote: Hi all. Game on. Hi Ken, If you need a mirror to host your stuff let me know as I have pretty much an entire web server at my disposal. That's why I have the space to host various abandon games. Adding your games to the USA Games site would be not a problem. On 4/9/11, The Addictor kenwdow...@neo.rr.com wrote: Hi, Have you tried my sound pack for Audio Quake? I think you'll find it makes a lot more sense. For example, you hear a door slamming instead of a low hum for--well--a door. The wall sounds and slopes were changed too. I actually modified the Jedi mod for Audio Quake, that gives a coordinate system and allows you to adjust, on the fly, the scanning rate so you can run and still hear what you're flying past. I even made a hunter rocket. It doesn't do much damage at all, but you can shoot it and follow it as it hunts down that next monster. I'm sure some would say it makes things way too easy, but in the episodes you really need all the help you can get. [Audyssey] Alter Aeon - New Area Opening
I'd like to announce the opening of a major addition to the southeast lands of Alter Aeon. The builders, Shadowfax and Draak, have spent a number of years constructing the Naginag Combine and its surrounding areas; this addition extends those areas and completes a number of dangling storylines. Here is the official announcement, from Shadowfax. --- I am proud to announce the opening of the city of West Naginag and its sister area, the village of Ooahu. Usually we open areas with little fanfare, but these areas deserve special mention for a number of reasons. Just the sheer amount of effort and time that has been put into this project is remarkable. Ten years ago, Draak and I came up the concept of the Naginag Combine. The idea was to build a collection of interrelated areas that were all part of the same empire. We showed Dentin our plans and released the first Combine area in 2002, what is now Draj and Zin. In response to the positive feedback about that area, we scheduled more Combine areas to build. I drew a picture of West Naginag during the summer of 2003. Now, after nearly eight years, it's finally finished. West Naginag and Ooahu are a lynchpin that tie all of the mainland Combine areas together. We left it for last, but it also took so long to make because I wanted it to be perfect. Whether you want to immerse yourself in the lore, play through engaging quests, or just get some fame, eq or good xp, these areas should have something for everyone. Once again we push the code to the limit, introducing consumables with custom spells, rechargable wands, mobs that make full use of necromancer abilities, wearable objects for your inventory, epic quests that unlock the secrets of the region, and a host of other fun little goodies for your enjoyment. --- Dentin and the staff of Alter Aeon MUD http://www.alteraeon.com --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] MAUTH in AudioQuake
There could be servers, but they aren't available through the Stats and Servers site. It wouldn't be that hard for someone with the resources and more knowledge than me to set one up, but you can still play online, if we can get this Mauth issue straightened out. I don't know perl, so I can't write another start.pl file, and I don't know what to disable in this one to eliminate the issue. I'm hoping this line of communication reaches someone like Cara Quinn or someone else in the know, so we can get some resolution. Even without online play, if you pit yourself against three or more bots with a reasonably difficult skill setting, you'll have a challenge. I have about a billion maps. Some work, some don't, but they are all interesting challenges. Truly, the most fun is in playing with friends, but it's still a decent way to spend a plotless bit of time, destressing by hacking and slashing and blowing up your enemies. As a side note, games like S.O.D. and M.O.T.A. are written specifically for blind users, and it's hard to get anyone who isn't blind as interested in playing them. I feel I owe it to A.Q. to get a little defensive when it is unjustly criticized, because it was a laudable effort to bridge the gap between two communities who rarely see eye-to-eye, if you'll forgive the witticism.
