[Audyssey] how to get super liam working in windows 8 and question about bsc games under game operating system
Hey all. here’s a way to get super lame working under windows 8. first, install the vb 6.0 extended runtimes note: i don’t actually have these at the moment. Then, run the checkup utility found in games like castaways or swamp. This should at least get super liam working in windows 8. Now, has anyone found out how to get the bsc games running in windows 8? thanks. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. any plans on providing users with a playable demo so users can try before they buy like in the windows versions? I'm slightly disappointed that the Mac version was the first to come out, since I'm a Windows user, but I'll definitely be looking forward to the Windows version, and I'm sure it will be worth the wait. I, too, am hoping that the pinball games are the next to be updated, because they are awesome, and I can't play them anymore. they crash with Windows 7. On 12/12/12, Draconis Entertainment gene...@draconisentertainment.com wrote: The following is an expanded version of the announcement we have posted to our website with additional details. We will try to answer questions posted here to the best of our ability, but please keep in mind that we will not be going into great depth about unannounced future titles, as has always been our policy. It has been a long time coming, but the dragon has awakened at last. Pull up a chair, and we'll fill you in on what we've been doing. Draconis Entertainment has spent the last few years working on a next-generation game engine for audio gaming. We had several key goals in mind as we began working on this project. * We wanted to future-proof our games. A game engine that could easily be maintained and kept current in-line with modern operating systems, eliminating the problems of incompatible or out-of-date dependencies was essential. * We wanted cross-platform compatibility. We are Mac users ourselves, and only supporting Windows was no longer satisfactory. Our new game engine will work on Mac OS X, Windows, and iOS devices. * We wanted a game engine so flexible that it would support any kind of game-style we chose to throw at it, and to build all future releases on top of the same core. * We wanted to bring our prices down. If the game engine really was as capable as we designed it to be, this would mean more rapid development once the core of the engine was complete. The enormity of this undertaking cannot be understated. The game engine will be continually enhanced and expanded as we release more and more titles. You will see our games grow in size and complexity with each release as we push the limits of what the engine is capable of. To put this into perspective, the game engine itself, not counting any game specific code, currently spans over 130,000 lines of code. The game engine has been under active testing by an incredible group of beta testers for the last two years, to whom we are enormously grateful. We could not have done this without them. Thank you all! Looking ahead.. Our plan going forward is to begin releasing both new titles as well as expanded versions of old ones that have been rewritten from the ground up for the next-generation Draconis game engine.. As our focus has been on perfecting the engine, the first couple of titles will be new versions of some of our classic games with tons of new features, new audio, new modes of play, and so on. All-new titles will be coming very soon thereafter, with more classic titles staggered between new releases. In general, we expect desktop titles to be released first for Mac OS X, followed soon after by Windows versions. Mobile games for iOS are also in development, as well as special mobile versions of games that have been traditionally meant for desktops. Our desktop game development has been broken into two distinct fazes. Initial game design and development is now being done on Mac OS X with the primary coders and a team of beta testers, while a separate coder and set of Windows testers will work on the Windows release as the game's initial design and development wraps up. It is with great excitement, that we are pleased to announce the immediate availability of our first Mac OS X title, which is expected to be available for Windows in the first quarter of 2013 as well. ChangeReaction, Draconis Entertainment's classic audio puzzle game for the blind and visually impaired comes to OS X with new audio, three entirely different modes of game play, a host of new features, and a cheaper price tag! Primarily intended for blind and visually impaired gamers, ChangeReaction is played via the keyboard and your ears. Navigate the game board with the arrow keys, dropping coins on the stacks to create chains of explosions and rack up higher and higher scores! Match three coins of the same denomination vertically or horizontally to trigger a chain reaction that blows up all adjacent coins of the same value! This game has no visual element. Use your fingers, ears, and wits to rack up the highest scores possible! * Choose from three distinctly different variations of game play. * All modes support three

will the engine have screen reader api support and if not will fc2.0 have it for people who just want to use there readers and not sapi or recorded speech? On Mar 30, 2012, at 3:30 PM, Thomas Ward wrote: Hi Christopher, I certainly have plans to do that. Its part of the reason I am writing the engine. At first I initially was going to write up general Python tutorials for the USA Games developer site and then realized I could ease the new game developer into Python by building some common modules for sound, music, input, etc. It would simplify a language that is already fairly simple to begin with. Basically, what I'll be doing in terms of documentation is a two part tutorial. One part will deal with the basics of the Python language. The second part will give specific documentation on the Open G3D engine and how to use the class modules for this, that, and the other thing. For instance, here is a quick source example of initializing and using sound in Open G3D. #Import the audio class module import audio #Declare a mixer object mixer = audio.Audio() def main(): #Load a sound and asign it to channel 1 mixer.SoundOpen(1, my_sound.wav) #Play the sound mixer.SoundPlay(1, False) #Position the sound to the left mixer.SoundPosition(1, -90, 0) #Position the sound to the right mixer.SoundPosition(1, 90, 0) #Stop the sound mixer.SoundStop() Obviously, something like this would be explained in more depth in the actual documentation, but there really isn't much complication to this simple example. We import the audio module, declare an audio mixer object, and then in the main function we load a sound, start it playing, and move it around a bit. Very simple stuff here. However simple it might be I think it is a great intro to programming without a lot of overhead involved. Cheers! Go to [url=eurpod.com/vmware]the vm archive[/url] and download the vm you want totally free. Important! But to hopefully speed it up, press alt+o for options once the download has started. Go to accelerated segmented downloading where you can break the download into segments 4/4 is the best choice I think. 3. Once the download is finished you should've clicked save not open, open vmware player and press ctrl+o. Then go to the directory where you extracted the vm then click on the vertual machine I think it's called windows xp.vmdk then press enter on it. Click on play vertual machine for xp and say you moved it when it asks did you move it or copy it. Then press ctrl+g to go from 7 to xp. Hi. from reading the message that you were sent Michael, it sounds like that the guys issue is not that he has stopped supporting accessibility, he wants two things, firstly he wants you to leave him alone about accessibility, as quite rightly he doesn't want accessibility to take over game development at the expense of other features. and also he doesn't like your signature advertising the system access network. I think part of the issue could also be down to communication problems, as correct me if I am wrong, but Michael, your grasp of English does seem a bit shaky some times, so perhaps also you misinterpreted the message you were sent. I have to say, I also agree your signature constantly advertising system access is annoying. So I think you should reply, and say thanks for the e mail, and also appologise for your spam signature which I think you should get rid of, from e mails and forum posts. You should also get rid of it before replying to the games author. You should reply to him though, so he knows you are still happy to talk to him if, he needs you, but this is important, after replying to his message. Leave! the! guy! alone.! you should make it clear that you would still like to give input on accessibility if he wants you to. You should remove the signature before replying, as if you leave it, it will be like you totally ignored his message and didn't listen to him. I have also noticed, that you do seem to become obsessed with games very easily, so for example the de steno games, and now this. There is nothing wrong with a hobby, but also you shouldn't nag people about accessibility constantly. These are just my thoughts, I hope they don't upset you or anyone. Re: [Audyssey] Poll: playroom on iPhone or on mac
i would pay anything but would rather have a mac version first. and if rs games can create a mac version then you can. On Dec 1, 2011, at 3:08 PM, QuentinC wrote: Hi dark, There's a big difference between my playroom and Thomas' game. In Thomas' case, in order to make something multiplateform, he has to think completely his project to be multiplatform from start. Being multiplatform in C++ is not an easy task at all: you must pick the right audio engine, the right windowing and input handling system, organize your files in a certain way, don't use proprietary formats or drivers specific to a certain OS, put all these things together correctly, etc. In my case, my game essentially works on a server, and the server is the same for all clients on all systems. In fact the client is rather stupid: it only shows what the server tells it to show and ask the server for what to do when certain keys are pressed. Compare that to your web browser: it only shows the page the webserver delivered to it, and ask for another page to show whenever you click on a link. The logic behind, i.e. how the websites you are visiting really work, is a matter of the server only. The browser only know that you clicked on a link, it doesn't know that you are ordering something in a online shop. Note: this is a very simplistic view of the real job done by a browser, but you should catch the basic idea. Consequence of that: the developper has just to make a GUI and follow my protocol to communicate with the server properly. He can use the specific tools and drivers of choice for his system to make the GUI, the audio, the input handling, talk to the network, etc.. The problem is therefore in theory far much easier than thinking from the beginning how you could do so that that particular thing work the same way everywhere without changes. Of course the task remain difficult, but has nothing to do compared to what Thomas had to do. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Even though I am not a BGT user myself, I already know this update is going to have a huge impact on the community! I wasn't around before the days of BGT, but I see how it is twisted and woven in to almost every thread and game discussion. All by its self, I believe BGT has won you a permanent legacy in the audio game community Philip, and I have yet to see anything that compares to it in terms of overall community long-term impact. As cheesy as it may sound, creating something with the same level of importance is what I'm striving for myself. I am absolutely positive I have not come close yet, but I will stick around until I do. Mr. Bennefall, keep up the great work and prepare yourself for probably a hundred ecstatic responses to the news of your new release. :D And keep the bar really high so I have to climb a while before getting up there with you sir. Hi all! After nearly a year in development, version 1.1 of the BGT engine is now available for download! It features the largest set of changes yet in its release history, most of which are features requested by end users. It includes mouse support, screen reader support, a pathfinder to make it easier when adding artificial intelligence to your game, improved Sapi support where you are now able to enumerate and change voices, and tons more. The change log is a bit too long to paste in an email to the list, so I invite those who are curious to go grab the new installer and have a look! Thanks to all of those who provided suggestions and ideas, bug reports and other general feedback over these two years. Without all of this, the BGT engine would not be what it is today. Thank you! If there is only one option starting with a particular letter, it will automatically be selected. For example, in Uno, you can now press D to draw a card, since this is the only option in that menu starting with the letter D. Note that first letter navaigation takes precedence over hotkeys. -Added in Auto Update on all platforms. This allows the client to update to a new version automatically when it is released. After updating, the client will automatically start on Windows and Mac, but due to the varying environments of Linux, you will need to start the Linux version manually after an update. - Your sound volume preferences will now automatically be saved. I know some people have stuck them on dropbox, however I'm always concerned at those sorts of options sinse it's not often clear how long such things will be up and available and it's most irritating to have someone say it'll be on dropbox only for the link to go dead a couple of weeks later. so some confirmation from Damien regarding self destruct, danger city, last crusade and the savage gambit (I think that was all of them), would be welcome indeed. speaking of projects, is the rsgames client for mobile devices still being written? Level Star's Icon and APH BraillePlus may NOT be supported, however since the announcement of Orion SmartBook, the Android-based notetaker, and Braille Wizard should run fine once Mono for Android is out of its pre-release phase. I use Hekkus sound library, which is a cross-platform engine with fast sound anipulation, but it doesn't yet support 3D but the developers are working on that. But then I realized that every Mac has VoiceOver built-in, and it's quite nice! I've been going through my web pages with VoiceOver, and I've found a number of minor issues that I'll be correcting. But I'd hate to fine-tune my pages to VoiceOver's quirks only, without knowing about similar quirks in other software. In particular, what do Windows users typically use to browse the web? I see that Narrator is built-in to Windows, but it's almost unusable. Even Narrator itself recommends users buy a third-party program instead. So, if I were to purchase one such third-party program for the purpose of testing my website's accessibility under Windows, which program should it be? Thanks! On Jan 20, 2011, at 11:51 AM, Philip Bennefall wrote: Hi all, I have been opposed to adding screen reader support into BGT since the very beginning, though I am beginning to change my mind. The primary reason for my not wanting to do it has been the fact that Jaws steals a large number of keys from DirectInput, making it very hard to play games if Jaws is loaded and not in sleep mode. However, I have just managed to solve this problem. Jaws uses what is known as a low level, system wide keyboard hook which basically monitors the state of the keyboard device and decides whether input should be allowed through so that other applications can see it. Jaws, as we all know, decides that a lot of keys should not be let through such as the arrows, escape and a whole bunch of others. So what I have done is to set up a low level keyboard hook of my own, though a process specific hook rather than a global one. Why? Because process specific hooks always take priority over global ones, which means that I can simply tell my keyboard hook to allow everything through... And there you have it. Jaws and DirectInput are now the best of friends. I am going to enable this as an option in BGT, because even though I tell everything to go straight through it does block certain Jaws specific keystrokes from being processed while you are in the window, almost as though Jaws had been in sleep mode though it technically is not. In other words, this will enable me to add support for Jaws speech output while preventing Jaws from messing about with the keyboard input. Just some information I figured I would share with you. The only issue there is with sapi sis that not everyone will have a decent voice, but this is a synth voice issue not a screen reader one, and with companies like seerprock, acapella neospeech etc producing good quality sapi compliant voices which no longer cost the earth to buy, it's a good investment for anyone who wants to play audio games. in fact, I regard buying a sapi voice as rather like buying a joystick where audio games are concerned. Yes that was a while ago, but it still happened, and now it looks like he's disappeared off the face of the earth, and they're still being flamed. It was an attempt at marketing, and I believe a very good one. Considering Grizzly Gulch and Chillingham were their very first games, I think they were awesome. The only thing I'm slightly disappointed about is I don't think we'll ever see the front cover of Chillingham II, let alone an audio trailer. They must have had a very good reason for not communicating any more. Things happen in people's lives that consumers don't seem to think can happen to businessmen. Re: [Audyssey] Announcing RSGames Client Mobile!
ok that makes sense. On Sep 17, 2010, at 12:28 AM, Thomas Ward wrote: Hi Brandon, The reason is because the RS Games client was written in Python. Python is a runtime language, that is it requires a third-party runtime environment, and a Python program in theory will run on any computer where there is a compatible Python runtime environment and modules. So, for example, if I write and compile a Python 2.6 program on Linux I can redistribute the compiled pyc files to any Mac or Windows users and have them run the program provided they have Python 2.6 installed on their Windows or Mac machine. That is why Python is a build once run anywhere type language. Now, if the game were written in C or C++ then you would have to have a Linux, Mac, and Windows machine to compile it on each platform. The reason is because C/C++ is a native language and is compiled directly to a native executable that doesn't require some third party runtime environment. If you cut out that middle man, the runtime environment, that means you have to take some extra steps in order to produce a true Mac, Linux, or Windows program using C or C++. The Up side to using a native language like C/C++ is you have more direct access to the operating system, it performs better, but you loose cross-platform portability in a lot of cases. The upside to using Python is that you have that cross-platform design from the start, but lose some performance on account of using a runtime environment. Plus if there isn't a package that gives you access to some specific native API for Python you end up having to write your own wrappers to support that native API. So as you can see there are pros and cons to each type of programming approach. Cheers! Plus by using SAPI or self-voicing the game through wav files the game can be used by someone who either doesn't have a screen reader or doesn't have a compatible screen reader than those supported. Finally, if I started supporting screen readers sooner or later I'm sure I'd get requests to support this or that screen reader which I may not have or wish to support. So not supporting any directly saves me from showing favoritism to any screen reader or company regardless of how I feel about them personally. Cheers! [Audyssey] monopoly suggestion
Hey all. thought i would cc this to the rsgames support team. thought of a suggestion for monopoly. since nvda is working with more applications through the nvda controler, it would be great if monopoly had nvda support for those who don't have jaws, window-eyes or system access or for those who use nvda as there full time screen reader. Hope this can work at some point. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. [Audyssey] another monopoly suggestion
here's another suggestion. maybe you could make the password box into a box the screen reader could for instance when someone tries to log into monopoly and they type there password, the characters are echoed and i have a feeling that someone can see the text where as logging into a site like a bank or somewhere else, the text is hidden and the screen reader either says star or something else. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Click the button that says Join Game. Then, you should see several different buttons: Game Number with people Click the button with your friend in it. I tried it once, trying to get the older speech voices, and blew Sapi 5.3 up completely. It required a rather lengthy and painful process to get 5.3 back up and working again. Cheers! I know that more and more programs like Jaws are shipping with sapi voices that only work with that program. I bet because they are much cheaper to license and distribute that way. I could put the sapi5 speech developers kit up on Send Space for you. I think that it contains the Microsoft sapi5 text to speech engine and might get your voices working again. Below I am putting all of the sapi5 fixes that I know of. I really would recommend the first one first. The first thing that I would try would be the DelUserLex.exe file that you can find on my free windows sapi5 text to speech games page, as well as on the GW Micro and Freedom Scientific sites. It is a strange file in that it doesn't say or seem to do anything, but it did fix my sapi5 voices. Here is another fix that I was told about. Go to c:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Speech Then, press enter on Sapisvr.exe. It won't say anything, but it should correct the control panel entries for Sapi. Another thing that you can do is to use the Windows XP restore feature to restore your computer back to a date when the voices were working. And then there is to use your Windows XP cd to repair the entire sapi5 text to speech engine. you can download (SpeechSDK51MSM.exe). which contains all of the Microsoft Sapi voices available for Windows XP from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=5e86ec97-40a7-453f-b0ee-6583171b4530displaylang=en HTH --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org.
