 Hi Laurel,

Well, the only way to know for sure is to buy them and try them, but I
can say 99% of the time they won't be accessible. Not only do you have
to worry about the fact that things like the menus etc won't talk most
of the games out there for Mac are emulated. That is that they are run
through a specific Windows game emulator like Cider which doesn't
communicate onscreen information to VoiceOver. This pretty much insures
the fact that even if the display was presenting straight text you
couldn't read it with VoiceOver because Cider like all emulators doesn't
expose the onscreen information to the accessibility APIs.

Plus keep in mind mainstream gaming is highly graphical in the first
place. Most first person, third person, and strategy games are
inaccessible because they require sighted assistance in aiming weapons,
moving around the game world, and so on. So you are pretty much out of
luck if you are thinking of going down the mainstream gaming route.

 Cheers!

[Audyssey] learning how to write games

2012-01-30 Thread Laurel
Hey,
I have a question for those of you who write games and all. How did
you learn how to write the games that you have created? For example,
how did you learn the computer coding languages you needed, and how to
build your game from an idea to an actual game. Was there a course you
took, or something online or an accessible book you read that helped
you? I have several ideas I'd love to work on, but I really don't even
know where to begin. /smiles/

Re: [Audyssey] looking for an accessible version of risk

2012-01-14 Thread Laurel
hm, maybe this is a dumb thought or question, but I wonder if a
blind game developer could ever contact the company and get permission
to make a braille version or risk, or an accessible online version.
Think about it, there's braille monopoly out there that you have to
pay for. Also, the company wouldn't be losing alot by giving somebody
permission to develop accessible risk for us, either via braille or on
the computer. We (us blind gamers) are not a relatively large
community compared to the population as a whole, therefore as a whole
compared to the rest of the world, the demand for an accessible risk
isn't great. I know it's a big deal for us, but sighted people could
care less. So I wonder if the company that sells risk would ever allow
a blind game developer to create a version of accessible risk. I
personally would even be willing to pay the standard selling price,
$30 or whatever it is for a normal risk board, if I could have an
accessible version of my favorite game. Just like I'd be willing to
pay for an accessible version of monopoly, which thanks to Jim
Kitchens and rs games we have for free. Anyway, just a thought, how
plosible do I even sound? I don't know much about copyright laws or
permission or anything, but is this totally out of the realm of

Just because you can go out and purchase a standard board or card

version is completely legal. Hasbro, as the copyright holder, is
legally entitled to royalty fees for using that particular game.
Fortunately, they haven't gone after Spoonbill Software, Kitchens Inc,
or RS Games, but from a legal standpoint they are well in their rights
to sue because its an illegal use of an intellectual copyright, and it
may effect the sales of their official product.

For example, when you go to the store be it Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Toys R
Us, whatever and buy Monopoly that money goes back to Hasbro with a
certain amount going to the store for selling it. Now, if you create a
Monopoly game for the PC and weather you sell it or not Hasbro isn't
making any money off your creation. If a thousand people play your PC
Monopoly game Hasbro considers it a thousand possible sales they've
lost because of your free Monopoly game. If you consider the average
Monopoly board game costs $25.00 USD that's $25,000 they've lost in
sales, and they'll expect you to pay them the $25,000 to make up the
 lost sales.

That is why its so dangerous to create games based on a copyright. In
many cases Hasbro or another copyright holder might overlook it,
ignore it, and not bother with a small time independent game
developer. However, if they should come after a game developer he or
she could be up to there eyes in hot water in a hurry. The best way to
avoid this is to create a game that is similar, but avoid any
trademarks that might get them into trouble.

For example, I've had an idea for a Monopoly game called Space Colony.
You would travel the universe buying up planets, building settlements,
and become an intergalactic businessman or woman. The rules could be
similar to Monopoly without using any copyrights or trademarks that
could bring the wrath of Hasbro down on a developers head.

Another idea is take Risk and call it Kingdoms. You could create an
entire fantasy board with 42 possible territories and would play using
knights, horseman, and chariots. The rule set could be similar to Risk
but by creating custom peaces, custom territories, and even custom
mission cards you'd completely avoid copyright infringement and create
a game that is unique at the same time.

 Cheers!

Thanks, I'll check it out. You know, I just thought of something.
Somebody could create a game like risk, but not named risk, and could
even have countries. There are 293 or so countries in the world, so
you could even use real place names but they wouldn't necessarily
match up with risk or infringe on risk's copyrights. You could have
like somebody else suggested, knights charriots and horses or some
other combination and you could have a similar set of mission cards.
Anyway, just a thought.

[Audyssey] board game writing question - programing language etc

2012-01-14 Thread Laurel
Hey all,
With our discussions about risk, monopoly and other board or classic
card games, it brings up another question for me. I wanna know, what
programing languages or codes do most people use when writing
something like monopoly. If I were going to write a card game, like
Texas Hold Em or War or something, or a board game like Risk or
Monopoly, which codes or programing languages would be the easiest and
most affective to use.

Re: [Audyssey] looking for an accessible version of risk

2012-01-12 Thread Laurel
Y'all, let me tell ya. I have no developing knowledge and don't know
how to write games at all. I do know how to play risk, and I love it.
So if any of you developers would be willing to make an accessible
risk version, I would be totally happy to help you in any way that I
could. I would be happy to help you by telling you the rules, how you
play etc. I could test the game for you and help you in that way,
basically, I'm willing to do anything to help. I just want an
accessible version of my favorite game in the world and I would be oh
so happy if somebody would make one for me, and I'd be happy to help
in any way I can. I'd even be willing to skype somebody or something
if they wanted to talk in real time not just by email in order to work
on making the game. I'm desperate lol.
Laurel and Stockard
P.S. maybe I can learn something about game building in the process as
I have ideas for games and just don't know how to make them.

However, the wikipedia article is of course not precise enough on
 certain points. Missing are:
 * Exact connections between countries, especially where are links over
 oceans
 * Exact card contents. As I understood, there are 72 cards in total, one
for each country, 2 jokers and 28 missions. But are unused missions
always in the deck ? It looks strange... because you could guess what is
your opponents' mission. so 28 cards may be unclear.
 * Battle rules kept me in doubt: they first say that you can't send
more than 3 attackers against 2 defenders, and further they say that you
can send any attackers as you wish and continue until a region is
totally defeated. I must have missed something.

[Audyssey] Does anybody use the mIRC chatting client, related to IRC?

2011-12-24 Thread Laurel
Hi all,
I'm wondering if anybody uses mIRC. It's a chatting client that uses
the IRC chatting program. This is real popular among gamers and stuff,
and with one of the online games I'm playing (cyber nations) they use
it alot. I use JAWS Screen reader version 11, and will soon update to
version 13. If any of you use mIRC in combination with JAWS, could you
please give me some pointers on how I can make mIRC work well with
JAWS? I know you can configure the mIRC scripts to perform certain
tasks and do things, but I'm just not sure how to make it work with
JAWS. Any advice/help would be appreciated. I realize this is not game
specific, but I felt that it was game related enough for me to ask on
here. Sorry if I'm off topic at all, just figured somebody on here
could help me out. /smiles/

friendly user interface to IRC. I know that the MIRC program can be
configured for better JAWS use, but I'm not sure how. Can any of you
all help me out? I'm using JAWS version 12 and the latest MIRC version
from www.mirc.com. Any help/suggestions on how I can better
configurate JAWS to work with this would be much appreciated. I just
need pointers in the right direction as I'm not even sure where to
begin. /smiles/

Re: [Audyssey] Blind Gamers Being Taken Seriously?

2011-12-17 Thread Laurel
I love this. What you've said is a very valid and good point. I think
for me as a beginner in learning how game developing works, I've
always just been used to the playing games side, and I don't know much
of the computer developing jargon for the game devs. One of my biggest
challenges is learning how to explain to a game dev why I can't play
their game, or use their iPhone app, and explaining how they can
change things to make it more accessible. Often times I find that
game/app developers are willing to lend me an ear and learn how to
make things accessible, but I don't know how to best explain to them
the steps they need to take in gaming terms. I hope that as I continue
to learn how all the gaming stuff works and the game/app terminology,
that I will be better at this.

Personally, I think that proofreading should be in the guidelines to
improve clarity. Those who are offended by it are the ones that have the
problem. It's not up to the reader to figure out what is being said, it's
up to the author to accurately convey it. If English isn't your native
language, that's understandable. If it is, use it correctly, or get
software from the Net that helps, and use it. If you don't want to show
yourself as a person who wants to be taken seriously about your gaming
experience, go elsewhere. Sounds harsh and blunt, but it's realistic.

Re: [Audyssey] kitchensinc games - installation question

2011-11-22 Thread Laurel
ok, sense you seem like you know how to do this, then let me ask you
this. /smiles/ I click on the game file, then I see the options run
save or cancel. I click on run. Then Windows asks me if I want
to run this again so I click run. Then I get to the part where I
have to unzip the files, and I hit unzip, and it says I can't do that.
I can't get past that point. Suggestions?
Thanks,
Laurel and Stockard

Subject: [Audyssey] kitchensinc games - installation question

 Hi all,
I decided I really wanna try out Jim's kitchensinc games! I think they
will be lots of fun. I have a question though. I am running Windows
Vista, and I installed the winkit folder and followed all the
instructions there. Now, I'm at the part where I have to find the
game/games I want and install them. It says that I need to go to the
name of the file/game, hit inter and then do a run as administrator
so that it will install propperly and I will be able to play. The only
problem, is I can't find the run as adminastrator option, so I'm not
sure how to make it work. Can y'all tell me what to do? /smiles/
 Thanks,
 Laurel and Stockard

ok. I got the winkit folder set up and installed, so I'm going to try
and do this again. Are you all using JAWS? Or is the fact that I'm
using JAWS going to mess this up at all?

2011-11-22 Thread Laurel
ok, cool thanks. So you all are saying that basically if I hit the
application key it will show me the run as administrator option.
Should I select the file first and then find the run as admin option
when it asks me if I wanna run, save or cancel? Or should I find run
as admin before I even hit enter. And the other option is if I go to
my control pannel and disable the user account control permission
thingy.
Sorry for all the questions, I'm just kind of confused and wanna make
sure I do this correctly.

ok, I disabled the uac thingy, so it unzips fine and all. I still
can't figure out how to pull up the applications key to find the run

can get one of y'all to add me and talk me through the process. lol

[Audyssey] intro and questions

2011-11-21 Thread Laurel
Hello all,
My name is Laurel and I just became a member of this list. I want to
tame a moment and introduce myself to you all. I also have a few
questions for you all.
I am from Dallas Texas and am a third year university student. I study
French and Russian and love learning languages! I use JAWS screen
reader along with an iPhone. I have a yellow lab female guide dog from
Guide Dogs for the Blind named Stockard.
I am interested in learning to write and create text based games as
well as iPhone applications and other accessible games for blind
people. This leads me to my questions. /smiles/ I know that in order
to write apps and games I need to learn a computer language so that I
can code properly. I also know that there are a tun of computer
programs out there that can help you write and design your games and
apps. My first question is what are the computer programs out there
that are the most JAWS accessible? I am having a hard time deciding
whether I should try to use c++, java or what because I don't know
what is good with JAWS. My second question is, I'm wondering if any of
you would be willing to menter me some. Like I said, I'm just learning
how to do this and I'm still learning the different computer languages
used to create games/apps. So would somebody be willing to menter me
and help me learn how to do this? Basically, I need somebody to help
me get started and point me in the right direction as far as resources
and helping me choose which programs to use, how to go about creating
a game etc.

Thanks,
Laurel and Stockard

[Audyssey] hello

2011-11-21 Thread Laurel
Hello all,
My name is Laurel. I am a college student in Texas and I have a yellow
lab guide, female named Stockard, from Guide Dogs for the Blind. I've
recently gotten in to gaming, because I'm only now discovering the
good variety of accessible games out there. I have two questions for
all of you.

1, I'm interested in learning the computer language necessary to write
a game. I study French and Russian, so learning codes and such is not
hard for me. Would anybody be willing to kind of menter me and help me
sort of learn how to get started? I'm not even sure which programs I
can use that are compatible with my JAWS screen reader.

2, My favorite game in the world is Monopoly. I have the RS Games
version of this. If any of y'all know where I can get other versions
of this, please let me know! I also play cyber nations, which is a
text based internet browser game. www.cybernations.net. My favorite
games are like monopoly, risk, any kind of battle/war game, and I love
text based games too. Especially like nation building games and empire
games. What are some of the games, free or paid, that you all would
recommend?

I also love sports, but I've never found an accessible sports game
like football, so if y'all know of any, let me know!!

If you would be willing maybe to menter me and teach me some about
computer language and game writing, please email me privately.
Thanks all! Have a great day!
Laurel and Stockard
